- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. As we come to John chapter 12,
- 0:45we have reached what is essentially the midpoint of the
- 0:47book of John. What is interesting here is that
- 0:50here in John chapter 12, we see Jesus entering Jerusalem prior
- 0:53to Passover and his imminent death.
- 0:56This is what we've come to know as Palm Sunday, one week before
- 0:59Jesus resurrection and a mere 5 days before his death.
- 1:03That is to say that half of the book of John is dedicated to the
- 1:06last week of Jesus life before his death and the short period
- 1:09of time he was on the earth after his resurrection.
- 1:12This is the culmination of the life of Jesus.
- 1:15This is why he came. We've heard his teaching, we've
- 1:18seen his miracles, but his death and resurrection?
- 1:21That is why he came to earth. With that in mind, listen to
- 1:25what Jesus says shortly after his triumphal entry into
- 1:27Jerusalem. We'll start in verse 20 and read
- 1:30through verse 26. Now there was some Greeks among
- 1:33them who were going up to worship at the feast.
- 1:35These then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee
- 1:38and began to ask him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus.
- 1:42Philip came and told Andrew. Andrew and Philip came and told
- 1:45Jesus, and Jesus answered them, saying, the hour has come for
- 1:48the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly.
- 1:51I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and
- 1:54dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
- 1:59He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in
- 2:02this world will keep it to life eternal.
- 2:05If anyone serves me, he must follow me, and where I am, there
- 2:09my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, the Father
- 2:13will honor him. Jesus says that it is time for
- 2:17the Son of Man to be glorified. This glory will not be in the
- 2:20way that the Jewish people were expecting the Messiah to be
- 2:23glorified. Jesus will not be lifted up to a
- 2:25throne. No, he'll be lifted up to his
- 2:28death on a Roman cross. And he tells us exactly what
- 2:32that path to glory is. Unless a grain of wheat falls
- 2:36into the earth and dies, it remains alone.
- 2:39But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
- 2:42The laying down of himself, the laying down of his own life,
- 2:46will result in his glory and ultimately in a great harvest
- 2:49for the Kingdom of God. And Jesus doesn't stop there.
- 2:53He calls all of his followers into that same death to self.
- 2:57He says he who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his
- 3:00life in this world will keep it to life eternal.
- 3:03And again, if anyone serves me, he must follow me.
- 3:07Jesus isn't requiring literal martyrdom of all his followers,
- 3:11though that will certainly be the end for some of them,
- 3:13including ten of his 11 faithful disciples.
- 3:16So what does Jesus mean when he says that we like he must die
- 3:21like a grain of wheat dies when it is buried in the ground?
- 3:24Listen to how Paul puts it in Colossians 3 verses one through
- 3:274. He says.
- 3:29Therefore, if you have been raised up with Christ, keep
- 3:32seeking the things above, where Christ is seated at the right
- 3:35hand of God. Set your mind on the things
- 3:38above, not on the things that are on earth, for you have died
- 3:41and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
- 3:44When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be
- 3:48revealed with Him in glory. If we are in Christ, if we are
- 3:51really going to follow Christ, our old lives are over.
- 3:56Our flesh, our sinful desires, our tendency to do what is easy
- 4:00and self-serving have been put to death with Jesus.
- 4:04We are new and it is in that constant laying down of our own
- 4:07desires, of our own selves that we find true, abundant life in
- 4:12Jesus. It is in that laying down that
- 4:15we will be glorified with Christ.
- 4:17So what parts of your old self are you holding on to?
- 4:20What parts of your flesh need to die in order for God to do
- 4:23something new in you, in order for God to glorify Himself
- 4:27through you? Don't hold on to them.
- 4:30Give them to God and allow Him to produce a great harvest as
- 4:34you lay down your life.
