- 1:45Speaker 1: my friend George Wallace, Hell, old are you a young man?
- 1:50Speaker 1: God bless you and yours and everybody, uh not that
- 1:53Speaker 1: we're on. Before we started, you gave me a little
- 1:56Speaker 1: lecturer and what was that lecture about? You? On how
- 1:58Speaker 1: many stations? And some of those are what on the station? Well,
- 2:00Speaker 1: you know, I'm on podcast and then I'm on church station.
- 2:03Speaker 1: More like about fifty stations now syndicated nationally, and so
- 2:06Speaker 1: I do want to let you know. You know, George,
- 2:08Speaker 1: you know, we have a huge story to tell us
- 2:10Speaker 1: about those churches, those church people calls as much as
- 2:12Speaker 1: I do what you tell me talking about church people.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Every sing over the church. Last Sunday was the first Sunday, right,
- 2:18Speaker 1: and you had communion. We got this new communion. They
- 2:21Speaker 1: got the wine and the wafer combining the same container.
- 2:24Speaker 1: And and I see little old ladies in black dresses
- 2:27Speaker 1: just custom trying to open that. You can't get the
- 2:28Speaker 1: wafer off by the time the preacher say, let us all,
- 2:31Speaker 1: we didn't drink together. I see a lot old lads
- 2:33Speaker 1: from the mothers bore the white dressers ond this some
- 2:35Speaker 1: bull trip. This is some bull trip right here, bull
- 2:38Speaker 1: twit and whatnot the only George Waller, George, come on now,
- 2:43Speaker 1: we've been knowing each other for years. Your first book
- 2:45Speaker 1: laughing off. I loved it. I love listen, thank you
- 2:48Speaker 1: so much. I had it was in the third uh printing,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and I sawd more books than I thought. And they're
- 2:54Speaker 1: still buying that. But the new book, right, it's going
- 2:58Speaker 1: crazy bull twitched. You think the pandemic has something to
- 3:01Speaker 1: do with people at the house, They got time on
- 3:03Speaker 1: their hands, unemployment. What do you think white people? Why
- 3:06Speaker 1: is it? Why is it? Why is it selling so
- 3:08Speaker 1: much a combination of everything? Because we are at home.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'm at home. I'm inconcelerated here in Atlanta, sent to
- 3:14Speaker 1: March fourteen and got nowhere to go, nothing to do,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and maybe taking it too serious. I don't know, you
- 3:20Speaker 1: can't take it too serious. But I'm very cautious. I'm
- 3:24Speaker 1: social distancing I uh rashan. I'm trying to stay six
- 3:27Speaker 1: feet away from myself. That's all. That's all. And to this,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I would let's talk about that because see em tell
- 3:36Speaker 1: you so in March when it hit man. You know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: because we we you know, comedians, we always see something
- 3:40Speaker 1: in the third eyes. So we see humor. We're also
- 3:42Speaker 1: see reality. And so when I when I first went
- 3:45Speaker 1: out in public, I when I was in Houston, Man
- 3:47Speaker 1: and I had my gloves and I didn't have a
- 3:49Speaker 1: maska at the time. I had like a ski mask.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I kind of pulled it up over my note and
- 3:54Speaker 1: then I I had me some Parrell leftover prell because
- 3:57Speaker 1: I didn't know at the time parrel would be like,
- 3:58Speaker 1: you know, liquid gold. You know what I'm saying. And
- 4:01Speaker 1: so I went to hold deepot when its side and
- 4:03Speaker 1: I came out, I didn't know what to do. So
- 4:05Speaker 1: I take my gloves off to the stuff. I bring
- 4:07Speaker 1: out a home deeper. Was it contaminated? I was just
- 4:10Speaker 1: a mess of confusion. I took the gloves off and
- 4:12Speaker 1: I repreed my fingers and looked at my sterwheel. I
- 4:15Speaker 1: didn't know what to do with my sterwheel. I was
- 4:17Speaker 1: just a mask. That's how it was. When when at
- 4:20Speaker 1: the very time. Now I'm a lot more calmer. Now,
- 4:22Speaker 1: how did you react to the pandemic? Well, I was
- 4:25Speaker 1: just like you. I was doing stupid stuff. My mask
- 4:28Speaker 1: is over on the table. But I had a mask.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I got a shield, right, I got everything. I reacted
- 4:34Speaker 1: in such a different way. Man, let me tell you something.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I was doing all kind of crazy thing like eating
- 4:39Speaker 1: habits are different, right, like this morning, I had a
- 4:41Speaker 1: hot dog and potato salad. Right, I'm doing all kind
- 4:44Speaker 1: of crazy thing yesterday. But then I had chicken, cheerios
- 4:47Speaker 1: and cheesecake. So I'm doing stupid stuff. But I'm trying
- 4:51Speaker 1: to keep laughing and trying to stay happy. I'm trying
- 4:54Speaker 1: to practice social just this the thing and right, but
- 4:57Speaker 1: it's it's a different dadtime. It's a new day. Even
- 5:00Speaker 1: with the last week. My daughter drove by to visit
- 5:03Speaker 1: me and uh. I live on the tour the fifth floor,
- 5:06Speaker 1: so she was down in the park a lot and
- 5:08Speaker 1: I wave better. I said, keep moving. Curve by way,
- 5:13Speaker 1: drive by way, drive by wayn drop by love's drop
- 5:17Speaker 1: by love. But listen also with it if it's something
- 5:21Speaker 1: what we're doing. The Stummer is not gonna get together
- 5:23Speaker 1: for Christmas. We're gonna zoom like we're doing right now, absolutely,
- 5:26Speaker 1: which is small. This is much fun. We're just gonna
- 5:29Speaker 1: have Christmas in July. July is all we can do.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Better Now, let me let me you just it's just
- 5:39Speaker 1: part of your online rambling right now because you ain't
- 5:41Speaker 1: making much sense to me. But you're funny though. It's
- 5:43Speaker 1: just it's just rambling right here. This is what it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: really you know, because you just because you just joined
- 5:49Speaker 1: social media last week. See, you were in the late
- 5:51Speaker 1: comments to social media. You didn't understand what tweeting almost.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I'm trying to say this to you, but it looks
- 5:57Speaker 1: like one of these things. I'll drop down, drop down. Now.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I'm being very serious about Christmas in July. It's happening now.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Some of these families, like my family, part of my Fromlin, Ohio.
- 6:11Speaker 1: There's so much love in the house. They don't mind
- 6:14Speaker 1: meeting up, but I want them to know that meet
- 6:16Speaker 1: up later. Social distancing, you don't know where people have been.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You have people coming in from everywhere. So I want
- 6:22Speaker 1: you to practice safe, safe practices and and and do
- 6:25Speaker 1: the right thing and try to That's why I'm saying
- 6:29Speaker 1: we can celebrate Christmas in July. Jorge, how can you
- 6:32Speaker 1: take advice from a comedian? Now? Okay, because I don't
- 6:35Speaker 1: know if you're seriously, how can I take advice for you? You?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Finally do you alleged you don't You don't need to
- 6:41Speaker 1: take advice. I mean you just need to listen. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: want you to be around to buy a ticket. I
- 6:45Speaker 1: don't want you going out to all these uh like
- 6:48Speaker 1: I live here in Atlanta, right, And sometimes I think
- 6:50Speaker 1: they did not get the message here in Atlanta. Some
- 6:53Speaker 1: of these young kids are not taking it seriously. I
- 6:55Speaker 1: think you've got to do that. And when I say
- 6:58Speaker 1: these kids running around, I'm going and I may be
- 7:00Speaker 1: wrong by saying that. You know, sometimes we're talking about
- 7:03Speaker 1: the number being disproportional or in our neighborhood higher. Right,
- 7:07Speaker 1: So I'm gonna just tell your truth. Because they ain't
- 7:09Speaker 1: wearing the mask. Put the mask on, right, Please put
- 7:13Speaker 1: the mask on. While the mask and we know the
- 7:15Speaker 1: mask does make a difference when when you have their
- 7:18Speaker 1: fear as leader, we call our fearless leaders, George. You
- 7:21Speaker 1: know Donald Trump, who go to the Army Navy game,
- 7:24Speaker 1: he don't wear a mask, who telling everybody he don't
- 7:27Speaker 1: want the White House staffers, you know, fascinated. So you
- 7:31Speaker 1: have all these mixed messages. What do you say about
- 7:33Speaker 1: somebody who's leading us down the wrong path? Well that's
- 7:36Speaker 1: the problem. Since two thousand and six, I'm gonna write
- 7:39Speaker 1: another book. We're promoting my book to date called We'll
- 7:42Speaker 1: Twit and my other book excuse me, church people, but
- 7:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be the name of the books. Trump upped
- 7:47Speaker 1: up my life. And I'm serious about this. Trump just
- 7:50Speaker 1: because of leadership, Okay, that's why this country has gone
- 7:54Speaker 1: down the wrong path. And I did rather to joke
- 7:56Speaker 1: about stop calling it the skin of virus, and let's
- 7:59Speaker 1: call like one of it is the Trump mups right,
- 8:02Speaker 1: right right. That's happened here is that just because of
- 8:04Speaker 1: his leadership, he could have mandated the mask and it
- 8:08Speaker 1: could have been much better when some more cases than
- 8:10Speaker 1: China has I think Hong Kong is around five thousand.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Death's totally every day when that leadership crossed through, right
- 8:21Speaker 1: for us. Now, let's go back to the book, which
- 8:24Speaker 1: was really funny. I like I said, I love laughing off.
- 8:27Speaker 1: You came on my show when that book came out.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I got that at the house, and so it's one
- 8:32Speaker 1: of the funny things. It's kind of like the kind
- 8:34Speaker 1: of like phrases you can like put on your refrigerator
- 8:37Speaker 1: or you put on your mirror. You can like cut
- 8:39Speaker 1: of chop up the book, or you can take pictures
- 8:41Speaker 1: of the book. The bull Twitter and whatnot? And one
- 8:44Speaker 1: of the favorite phrases I've because you know, the thing
- 8:46Speaker 1: I've always liked about you, George is that your comedy
- 8:49Speaker 1: has always been tied to logic. Are people not using
- 8:52Speaker 1: common sense? Right? And so on? One of the favorite
- 8:56Speaker 1: lines and left, why is it so easy to pick locks?
- 8:58Speaker 1: And movies that tell like, no, if you got you
- 9:04Speaker 1: got the momer dollars in there, right and back? Come on?
- 9:07Speaker 1: What what? What? What? What with the plan? What? What?
- 9:10Speaker 1: What the uh? When you holding the paper with a
- 9:13Speaker 1: paper clip? Paper clip? Right? Stupid stuff. So, Rashaan, these
- 9:18Speaker 1: are my online rams, and I'm just venting talking about
- 9:21Speaker 1: different things. But that's so true. That's so true. That's
- 9:27Speaker 1: so true, you know, because you watch these movies and
- 9:29Speaker 1: all of a sudden, like you said, it's a vault.
- 9:32Speaker 1: They come in there, man, they put their ear to
- 9:34Speaker 1: the to the safe, to the safe click click click open, okay.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Or you know back in the old days, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: used to be to push the lock, the key out
- 9:42Speaker 1: the door, slide you some paper and then pull the
- 9:45Speaker 1: lead key. That's an old school. But nowadays they're just
- 9:48Speaker 1: going I was watching the movie the other day where
- 9:50Speaker 1: I was watching, uh, the last Mohican Last That's one
- 9:54Speaker 1: of my all time favorite movie. First of all, he
- 9:56Speaker 1: had he was handcuffed next day and he didn't have
- 9:59Speaker 1: the hand comes on, I said, how didn't got the
- 10:00Speaker 1: handcuff all in the movie? Can you be handcuffed and
- 10:03Speaker 1: you're not handcuffed? So that's why not all in the
- 10:06Speaker 1: Movie's my online rymblings about things like they're just because
- 10:11Speaker 1: I gotta get it in and so many of the characters. Uh,
- 10:15Speaker 1: just how pool we were growing up? Mr, how cool
- 10:18Speaker 1: we were. But you may not know this, but I
- 10:23Speaker 1: raised boring and raised in the line. We were so
- 10:25Speaker 1: poor that we couldn't listen to We could only listen
- 10:29Speaker 1: to the tips. That's what I'm trying to say. We
- 10:30Speaker 1: never knew that was a Gladdys We never knew that
- 10:34Speaker 1: was a Gladys night. We were just we were just
- 10:36Speaker 1: really cool. Don't laugh. There's certain people, you know, like Sanford.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I didn't know there was a sun until about twenty
- 10:44Speaker 1: years ago. We couldn't watch we didn't know about something.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I got that. This is the one that got me
- 10:55Speaker 1: in your book though, it just feels like our broker
- 10:58Speaker 1: straight up. I know my church people here, but how
- 11:03Speaker 1: how did that get that sexy to you. M right there,
- 11:07Speaker 1: that's M right there right now. And I'd pay a
- 11:16Speaker 1: lot of attention to al women because also it's as
- 11:19Speaker 1: the one man. Why do they say stupid thing right now?
- 11:22Speaker 1: This morning? Roker said in New York City, it's forty
- 11:26Speaker 1: five degrees, but it feels like it's thirty six. Right.
- 11:29Speaker 1: If it feels like at six, it must be thirty six,
- 11:33Speaker 1: staying stupid stuff. I talked about stuff like that, right,
- 11:37Speaker 1: listen to Richa. I love the book because these are jokes.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Normally I wouldn't when I rove the brook. Why should
- 11:43Speaker 1: I give away my jokes for free when people get
- 11:46Speaker 1: paid for them? And I thought, wait a minute, I'd
- 11:48Speaker 1: be thinking, some of these people will never ever get
- 11:51Speaker 1: to see George Wallace in Las Vegas, in your local
- 11:53Speaker 1: city where I come. Right now, I can visit, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: people can visit me from all over the world after
- 11:59Speaker 1: we can have And that's what social media did, fading off.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I love these jokes, Like right now, I'm gonna give
- 12:05Speaker 1: you a shout out to Rashan McDonald and your favorite
- 12:08Speaker 1: coat factory right Burlington. You go. You you're listening to

- 13:27Speaker 1: Like I didn't read your book. You know that's so cool, man,
- 13:30Speaker 1: I read your book. Now, you know one of my
- 13:32Speaker 1: favorite joke. We grew up so cool. We stayed at
- 13:34Speaker 1: the two seasons, but let me teach hey, don't even
- 13:38Speaker 1: get a good down. The other side of that replies
- 13:41Speaker 1: that I get back right, right, right, right right. It's
- 13:44Speaker 1: a reprise of people get back now after twister joke.
- 13:47Speaker 1: When you come see me now, I'm staying at the
- 13:49Speaker 1: fourth season. It's like ten thousand dollars a day for
- 13:52Speaker 1: sweet I mean, you know I did the joke. I'm
- 13:54Speaker 1: gonna bring this joke back in the lady the maid
- 13:55Speaker 1: asked me if I wanted her to change my sheets.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I told I want you to change everything in this
- 13:59Speaker 1: room ten thousand dollars a night. I wanted to get
- 14:01Speaker 1: those trippers off the ball. You get to get a
- 14:03Speaker 1: good corport off the floor. You're gonna change my roles
- 14:06Speaker 1: for ten thou dollars a night. So then you make
- 14:08Speaker 1: things when you come here and you hear a different
- 14:10Speaker 1: type joke to tweet. You got another favorite treet there
- 14:13Speaker 1: some of the stupid stuff I would do because you
- 14:15Speaker 1: know me, I'm different. Like you said, I don't play
- 14:18Speaker 1: by the rules. You don't play but you never played
- 14:20Speaker 1: by the rules. And but the cupcake out of pan
- 14:24Speaker 1: and pancakes out of cup that's that's scary. That's scary.
- 14:27Speaker 1: That's scary. Now here's one of the other favorites that
- 14:29Speaker 1: I read. Okay, shout out to the top five. Ain't
- 14:32Speaker 1: in the world, Ain't no mountain high enough, Ain't no
- 14:35Speaker 1: voy loring enough, ain't too proud to bread, Ain't no
- 14:38Speaker 1: chunchdown when he's gone, and I ain't staring in the book.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Then they got in the book, I'm free. You're saying free.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I see, I read the book. See that's the rambling parts.
- 14:55Speaker 1: He getting old, George, you're forgetting what you wrote. You
- 14:58Speaker 1: forget what I'm gonna tell like my daddy tell you,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I don't have to read the book. I wrote the
- 15:02Speaker 1: damn book. You forgot what you wrote? Then, joy, and
- 15:05Speaker 1: we're talked about forget because I'm looking. I'm more. I'm
- 15:08Speaker 1: going into my real jokes. And like I said, these
- 15:10Speaker 1: are ramblings. Go ahead, give me another one. I ain't
- 15:12Speaker 1: give you nothing else because they'm tired of you. Joy,
- 15:14Speaker 1: I'm tired of you disrespect that get when you come
- 15:16Speaker 1: on my show. Nobody just respect me like you I've
- 15:19Speaker 1: been knowing you. I'm not a I'm your real daddy.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Something about and the book is people to buy it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The quality of the book, that's what I like about.
- 15:33Speaker 1: In fact, I'm yeah blurred, y'all blurred every time me,
- 15:37Speaker 1: all of the book blurred. The book blurred, the book.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I know. I don't to get back at you now,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm a blurred the book Wallace, George Wallace dot net.
- 15:45Speaker 1: That's where I want you to go. I'm not on
- 15:47Speaker 1: the Amazon because I know you. You know why I'm
- 15:50Speaker 1: not on Amazon. Amazon, brother, they take half my money.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, I want George Wallace dotten net. People are
- 15:57Speaker 1: buying five and ten at a time. Richall. I am
- 16:00Speaker 1: really blessed. I'm so blessed that with this book, and
- 16:03Speaker 1: I already got morrible twit coming. And I just decided
- 16:08Speaker 1: last week that the Bird Waller Bird is gonna become
- 16:11Speaker 1: an animated series. Congratulations, so we can really do some
- 16:14Speaker 1: fun that I can come talk to you you can
- 16:16Speaker 1: give me some lifestyle points just because I don't know
- 16:21Speaker 1: what that big old flower napkin you got in your
- 16:24Speaker 1: lapel in that pocket. I don't know what that is, George. Somebody,
- 16:28Speaker 1: somebody just pops up. And sometimes I don't understand that.
- 16:31Speaker 1: That's not it pops up. Sometimes it girls like a
- 16:35Speaker 1: Christmas decoration in your top pocket. There, brother, I don't
- 16:39Speaker 1: care about it. I don't play by the rules. Everybody's
- 16:41Speaker 1: keep us up, I keep mind, keep down gramblers again, Now, George,
- 16:47Speaker 1: you know U was a late player to the social
- 16:49Speaker 1: media game, you know. And uh, and so because you know,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you started to stand up with our social media. You
- 16:55Speaker 1: were famous for social media, you're telling me, and still
- 16:57Speaker 1: tell like venues in comedy clubs. So what made you
- 17:00Speaker 1: finally adapt to social media? First of all, I've been
- 17:04Speaker 1: doing stand up since seven Okay, that's how long I've
- 17:08Speaker 1: been doing comedy. The reason why I came to Twitter
- 17:12Speaker 1: was because I had I just wanted to be a part.
- 17:15Speaker 1: You gotta keep still relevant, you gotta do what I love.
- 17:18Speaker 1: The young people what they're doing. Uh. Some people are
- 17:20Speaker 1: not even going to television anymore. There's a comedian named
- 17:24Speaker 1: Country Wayne that's my point, nobody knows who the health
- 17:27Speaker 1: he is, but through social media he sells out everywhere.
- 17:31Speaker 1: You know, media, I do things like that, you gotta
- 17:34Speaker 1: change bunch of times. And so that's why I'm on
- 17:37Speaker 1: uh tweeting and I'm on uh, I'm going, I'm going
- 17:42Speaker 1: to Instagram. I gonta do more on Instagram. I love TikTok.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I love me some TikTok. I love all of those
- 17:48Speaker 1: funny stupid things that I just love what the young
- 17:51Speaker 1: people are doing. And I'm trying to stay young with
- 17:53Speaker 1: we shard stays topical. Don't tell you schange, stay young,
- 17:55Speaker 1: just tay topical topic. I got I kind of work
- 17:57Speaker 1: with your lano to you know, you got to swag,
- 18:00Speaker 1: you got your legend. She sometimes you guys say topical.
- 18:02Speaker 1: You guys stay young. You know you're your your a legend.
- 18:05Speaker 1: You know I want your mentor we want to be
- 18:07Speaker 1: George wa trying to stay young. I'm just trying to
- 18:10Speaker 1: just trying to beat me. I'm just just and you
- 18:12Speaker 1: are you every day life. But one thing I've always
- 18:14Speaker 1: knows is about you. You know, like youtu've opened for
- 18:16Speaker 1: everybody headlined, I've seen you just staples sooner I've seen
- 18:19Speaker 1: you at you know, charity venues. You and I have
- 18:23Speaker 1: shared the stage together. You're acting sitcom star. What has
- 18:27Speaker 1: been the most fun part about your career, George Wallace?
- 18:31Speaker 1: I think I can tell you that by just saying
- 18:33Speaker 1: the most fun part about my career is that how
- 18:37Speaker 1: blessed I am. I'm so blessed too. I have a
- 18:39Speaker 1: passion for being around funny people, and being funny and
- 18:44Speaker 1: and enjoying what I do for life. God has blessed me,
- 18:47Speaker 1: so I'm getting ready to choke up right now because
- 18:49Speaker 1: He's given me a job my passion. All I do
- 18:52Speaker 1: is lie, just lie. I just make up stuff, I
- 18:56Speaker 1: just book and I just love lie. I want to
- 19:00Speaker 1: be the great ask God to let me be the
- 19:02Speaker 1: greatest bull Twitter in the world. You know what I'm
- 19:04Speaker 1: trying to say, Twitter people to watch it, But I
- 19:07Speaker 1: want to be the greatest bull Twitter in the world.
- 19:09Speaker 1: But right now Donald Trump is kicking the Twitter now
- 19:14Speaker 1: they I don't love what I do. I'm so blessed,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and I know you love what you do. Look at you.
- 19:18Speaker 1: You got a brand new sup. What you gotta take
- 19:20Speaker 1: back the name of Marchster Borrow. You're looking good, Yes, sir,
- 19:24Speaker 1: I'm trying. I'm trying. It's don't lay away. Actually it's
- 19:26Speaker 1: lay away, so you can keep it. But I know
- 19:31Speaker 1: the counter I enjoy with their lives. Yeah, so I
- 19:37Speaker 1: know I'm behind the counter, so I can take it.
- 19:39Speaker 1: And then as you're giving the money back, I won't
- 19:41Speaker 1: lose ten percent. You know at Walker, that's how it works.
- 19:44Speaker 1: But I know behind the counter, if you know black people,
- 19:47Speaker 1: black people know black people, that's how you get the
- 19:49Speaker 1: hook up. You know, if you know a white person,
- 19:51Speaker 1: you're gonna bring it back. And then you know it's
- 19:53Speaker 1: only your restocking. They called it a restocking fee. So
- 19:56Speaker 1: if you know a white person behind you, look good.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Every white person behind the counter, George, you really get
- 20:02Speaker 1: some discounts. If you know a white person behind the count.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Let me tell you see. You know all these new clothes,
- 20:08Speaker 1: show these clothes that costs. Stop doing that's the one
- 20:14Speaker 1: I us see other dollars a bottle. I ain't paying
- 20:17Speaker 1: for that stuff. Do you want a sample? You have
- 20:19Speaker 1: always they give you a sample, They give you they
- 20:22Speaker 1: load me up. And that's how I go. I go
- 20:24Speaker 1: through these stores that I go to a different store.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I get any cologne, I want do you have a
- 20:28Speaker 1: sample be taken? Okay, George, the book you know you
- 20:35Speaker 1: you read, you wrote it during the pandemic. Okay, residency
- 20:38Speaker 1: got canceled because of the pandemic. But it didn't stop you. No, no, no, no,
- 20:42Speaker 1: it did not get canceled. My name is still on
- 20:43Speaker 1: the market in Las Vegas at the West Gate Hotel
- 20:46Speaker 1: because in the world's largest sports book. But are you
- 20:49Speaker 1: going over? I will be back. Okay. What is it
- 20:53Speaker 1: set up? Because I went to your previous shows on
- 20:55Speaker 1: Monday nights. Is it seven days a week or dark
- 20:57Speaker 1: day on on Sunday? What is the schedule when go back?
- 21:02Speaker 1: I will go back to schedule will be the same
- 21:04Speaker 1: Tuesday through Saturday through Saturday at eight o'clock at the
- 21:08Speaker 1: west Gate. And we love to have fun there. And uh,
- 21:11Speaker 1: I don't know what the situation is gonna be with
- 21:13Speaker 1: the new UH rules you know sometimes and maybe the
- 21:17Speaker 1: rule of the room and maybe twenty five. We're having
- 21:20Speaker 1: problems in Laws Vegas right now. I don't know what
- 21:21Speaker 1: the new ramifications are going to be by the state. Uh.
- 21:26Speaker 1: But you qualified me the joy you owe. You qualify
- 21:29Speaker 1: for the vaccine early, don't you? Yes, I do yes,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I do. And I think I said I was not
- 21:34Speaker 1: gonna take it because of the past history of us,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you know, and then I thought about it, and maybe
- 21:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and take it because I don't
- 21:40Speaker 1: want to get the disease, uh when I had an
- 21:43Speaker 1: opportunity to take it. So I'm deliberating on so you
- 21:47Speaker 1: talk experiment if you're talking about yes, that program and
- 21:52Speaker 1: there was another program too, But that's why black people
- 21:55Speaker 1: don't want to take And I think you should be
- 21:57Speaker 1: concerned about whether you should take it or not. The
- 21:59Speaker 1: the uh side effects of it. We don't know what
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's gonna be yet, but right now so many people
- 22:04Speaker 1: are kicking the bucket that you gotta do something. You
- 22:07Speaker 1: want to take a chance on something, you want to
- 22:09Speaker 1: be always on the side of right. But let me
- 22:12Speaker 1: as you know, we're coming down here with the COVID nineteen. Uh.
- 22:18Speaker 1: You trapped at your house? You curve side? Would you
- 22:21Speaker 1: you do? Door dash? How do you? How do you
- 22:24Speaker 1: have a been a grocery store. I haven't been to

- 22:29Speaker 1: is dropped up at my door, the pharmacy at my door.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Any restaurant out need in Atlanta. It can be at
- 22:37Speaker 1: my door in fifteen minutes. And I thought I would
- 22:39Speaker 1: never ever order steak dinner uh from a restaurant because
- 22:43Speaker 1: I thought it would get cold. But it gets to
- 22:45Speaker 1: my house, it's hot, and it's good. I'm actually enjoying
- 22:49Speaker 1: the new way of living. I don't think we'll ever
- 22:51Speaker 1: go back to You want some of the old practices
- 22:54Speaker 1: we had. Well, I'm surprised you don't. You didn't you
- 22:56Speaker 1: didn't produce any facial mass because you are entrepreneur. I'm

- 29:16Speaker 1: Medicare advantage plans that compliment the coverage you get through
- 29:18Speaker 1: the v A. Ed Sandric is director of Humanized Veterans Channel.
- 29:22Speaker 1: How does the Medicare advantage plan work with VA benefits?
- 29:25Speaker 1: A Medicare advantage plan can compliment the healthcare services and benefits,
- 29:30Speaker 1: and the veteran gets it through the v A Medicare
- 29:32Speaker 1: advantage plans that Humana offers, particularly Humanita Auto Medicare Advantage Plan,
- 29:36Speaker 1: which was designed with veterans and mind used. The v
- 29:39Speaker 1: A worked side by side. As I said that it
- 29:42Speaker 1: kind of compliments the v A healthcare. An individual can
- 29:45Speaker 1: go to the v A for the services that here
- 29:47Speaker 1: she wants or needs of the v A and is
- 29:49Speaker 1: elpful for, and also can use the Medicare Advantage network
- 29:53Speaker 1: as well, side by side. They want to interrupt one another.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Um there are some medics and misconceptions among the veteran
- 30:01Speaker 1: community that they may jeopardize their VA healthcare should they
- 30:04Speaker 1: use original Medicare medical advantance that's just not the case.

- 32:27Speaker 1: of them. They blessed me. And uh and more important
- 32:30Speaker 1: your information that you've given us. And I want to
- 32:32Speaker 1: go right off the part. And you know, twenty has
- 32:34Speaker 1: been amazing racial year for us, you know, as African
- 32:36Speaker 1: American men. You know how we've always felt about the
- 32:39Speaker 1: police from a standpoint of a strong level of comfortness,
- 32:43Speaker 1: you know. And but but they're seeing it play out
- 32:45Speaker 1: in the public's eye. How would you say, cell phone
- 32:47Speaker 1: has player and cell phone has really been the game changer.
- 32:50Speaker 1: And I pursued a racial justice, there's no doubt about that.
- 32:53Speaker 1: It's a great way to characterize it. The Gutenberg shift
- 32:57Speaker 1: introduced by the smartphone particular, has changed the game. Now
- 33:02Speaker 1: you know black folking technology were always doing stuff outside
- 33:05Speaker 1: the box. Yes, we had beepers before we knew doctors
- 33:08Speaker 1: had beepers right right, Oh, physicians have them too, what
- 33:15Speaker 1: had and we knew what was up so and they
- 33:19Speaker 1: wasn't just paging their girls. Absolutely, we have always made exorbitant,
- 33:25Speaker 1: extravagant use available technology, and what we've done with the
- 33:31Speaker 1: smartphone has been extraordinary to be able to record. I
- 33:35Speaker 1: mean when we captured in Rodney King that was on
- 33:39Speaker 1: a home video record, um, but but a portable one.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Now with the smartphone, it's even more accessible. Everybody in
- 33:49Speaker 1: their mama, grandmama, grandson, you know, cousin, uncle has a
- 33:53Speaker 1: smart phone. Everybody wants to be Margaret book White or
- 33:57Speaker 1: you know Gordon Woods and was there or Deborah Willis.
- 34:01Speaker 1: So the thing is is that we're able to use
- 34:03Speaker 1: that smartphone to record what we say is true. We've
- 34:08Speaker 1: been telling you all that the police act out of hand.
- 34:11Speaker 1: We've been telling you all that no matter what we do,
- 34:13Speaker 1: they can cut the fool. As my dad used to say,
- 34:16Speaker 1: they treat you with disrespect. They will ignore you often,
- 34:20Speaker 1: they will ignore your humanity, your desire to be treated
- 34:24Speaker 1: with equality. They will be angry at you and resentful
- 34:28Speaker 1: for you even having a backbone or a voice. And
- 34:31Speaker 1: now these these video cameras have recorded it. Whether sometimes
- 34:36Speaker 1: it's on the body cams of some of these police people.
- 34:40Speaker 1: But we can't really rely on that because they turn
- 34:42Speaker 1: them off and on when they want, and they capture
- 34:45Speaker 1: what they edited in their altar their own advantage. But
- 34:49Speaker 1: the video recorder on the video camera on the smartphone
- 34:52Speaker 1: has changed the game. George Floyd, Eric Garner, Walter Scott Um,
- 34:59Speaker 1: Jacob Blake, Sandra Bland. We we know, well that was
- 35:04Speaker 1: recording from the uh from the body camp, but we
- 35:07Speaker 1: know that the phone can change the game and make
- 35:10Speaker 1: people see what we've seen and at least throw a
- 35:13Speaker 1: monkey wrench into the proceedings when people are trying to
- 35:16Speaker 1: act like we were acting the food, we were trying
- 35:18Speaker 1: to run away from the police, we were trying to
- 35:19Speaker 1: custom out, we were trying to shoot them. All that
- 35:21Speaker 1: has been put to rest. The smartphone is extraordinary. Now
- 35:24Speaker 1: let's talk about this because you know, when you when
- 35:27Speaker 1: I'm reading your book, you know, because it's like five chapters,
- 35:29Speaker 1: you know, titled black Deaf, Black Blue, Plague, White, Theft,
- 35:32Speaker 1: Seeing Read White, comfort. You know when you you know,
- 35:36Speaker 1: whenever I see a Henry Lewis Gates Journey Jr. No
- 35:39Speaker 1: documentary was on PBS. So you know, whenever he gets
- 35:43Speaker 1: to Dr Martin Luther King, man, I can't watch that part. Man,
- 35:46Speaker 1: that's the part of history. Mayor, I can't watch. I
- 35:49Speaker 1: saw this weekend when he was going through when he
- 35:51Speaker 1: got to that name, he said in eighteen sixty, I
- 35:53Speaker 1: turned off the TV. Now you may not get there
- 35:57Speaker 1: with you. I heard death. Seriously, I heard that, Paul.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I turned it off. I turned it off something I
- 36:04Speaker 1: don't want erupt you. But given what you're saying, when
- 36:07Speaker 1: I go to the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and
- 36:11Speaker 1: get to his room from three or six, I cried
- 36:14Speaker 1: like a baby every time. So it's like, I can't
- 36:17Speaker 1: you know. And so the reason I bring that up
- 36:18Speaker 1: because when you start looking at the Emmy Till and
- 36:21Speaker 1: Eric Gona, Brianna Taylor, and you know what happened to
- 36:24Speaker 1: the fifteen year old of Chicago, Penduton, And they had
- 36:27Speaker 1: nothing to do with the cop violence, but it was
- 36:29Speaker 1: about you know, black on black violence and somehow how racial.
- 36:33Speaker 1: They goes back to the thirteenth Amendment when you are
- 36:35Speaker 1: really going to break it all the way down. Sandra
- 36:37Speaker 1: Bland out of Houston, Texas area. How did you emotionally
- 36:40Speaker 1: hold it together? That's the question I want to write.
- 36:42Speaker 1: And I'm talking to Dr Eric Mike's Dawston his book
- 36:44Speaker 1: Long Time Coming Reckoning with RACI in America. Because you
- 36:48Speaker 1: are a scholar, you're intellectual, but you're still emotional, and
- 36:51Speaker 1: you see all this stuff lining up, you know, because
- 36:54Speaker 1: what happened is a certain series of disbelief coming about.
- 36:56Speaker 1: When you go, really, I forgot about this, I for
- 37:00Speaker 1: kind of about this. Tell us about that emotional journey
- 37:02Speaker 1: putting this book together. No, that's a great point you're making.
- 37:05Speaker 1: And look, obviously it was very difficult. Black people are
- 37:09Speaker 1: traumatized and we're re traumatized. We are terrorized, and we're
- 37:13Speaker 1: terrorized again. We are hurt and we're hurt again. Um.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And so having to watch this, having to go to
- 37:21Speaker 1: see King's place where he was assassinated, which gets me
- 37:25Speaker 1: every time, it makes me cry like a baby. Uh.
- 37:28Speaker 1: You know, people ask, well, why did you write the
- 37:30Speaker 1: book the way you did. I'll tell you why, Because,
- 37:34Speaker 1: as you said, I'm not just an intellectual. I'm not
- 37:36Speaker 1: just a scholar, I'm a human being, I'm a black man.
- 37:39Speaker 1: When I see this stuff happening to black people, I
- 37:42Speaker 1: have a choice. I have to choose how to present it.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I have to choose how to articulate it. I have
- 37:47Speaker 1: to choose how to express it. But I make a decision.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Do I want to share the horror of what happened
- 37:53Speaker 1: to George Floyd? Yes? Do I want to share the
- 37:56Speaker 1: horror of what happened to a mad Arbor? Yes? Now
- 38:00Speaker 1: I don't want to do it for sensational purposes. I
- 38:02Speaker 1: don't want to turn it into the pornography of black death,
- 38:05Speaker 1: where these are snuff films, the last few minutes of
- 38:08Speaker 1: black life shown on a recording that none of us
- 38:12Speaker 1: should see. There's no question. But at the same time,
- 38:15Speaker 1: I figured, if they could endure the death, if they
- 38:18Speaker 1: could actually die, if they could sacrifice their lives not intentionally,
- 38:24Speaker 1: there their their purpose here on earth wasn't, as far
- 38:28Speaker 1: as they knew, to amplify or to echo the extraordinary
- 38:33Speaker 1: quest for black justice in our time. And yet because
- 38:37Speaker 1: of the nature of their death, that's exactly what happened.
- 38:41Speaker 1: George Floyd said he wants to change the world. He
- 38:43Speaker 1: didn't mean die and change the world. He didn't mean
- 38:47Speaker 1: die and leave his daughter and other children behind. He
- 38:50Speaker 1: didn't mean dieu in a enignominious death where he was
- 38:53Speaker 1: asphyxiated by the cops on a pavement street, where they
- 38:58Speaker 1: kept their knees on his neck for more than nine minutes.
- 39:02Speaker 1: But because of how he died, that transformed this culture
- 39:07Speaker 1: and indeed shook the globe. So if they could endure
- 39:11Speaker 1: the death, the least we could do it's to grapple
- 39:15Speaker 1: with the hurt, the pain, the trauma, so that when
- 39:18Speaker 1: we watch it and see it and learn about it,
- 39:20Speaker 1: we can say we don't want this happening to anybody else,
- 39:23Speaker 1: and let's make this the last time. That's the hope
- 39:26Speaker 1: I have. And try to talk about what these people
- 39:28Speaker 1: have been through in this book. Well, you style it
- 39:31Speaker 1: into letters, and it really was you know, when I
- 39:33Speaker 1: when I started reading, like I already told you, broken
- 39:36Speaker 1: down into five chapters. But the letter like Black Death
- 39:39Speaker 1: is tied to in Matil and you your story, it
- 39:42Speaker 1: really was a very humane way of of sadness. Like
- 39:47Speaker 1: you know, Sam Cook, you know change is gonna come
- 39:49Speaker 1: and I don't think so okay, and we're gonna be
- 39:52Speaker 1: at the mountaintown. We'll see on the other side. I
- 39:53Speaker 1: don't think so. And that's what your book is trying
- 39:56Speaker 1: to say. It's not is sane, But can we make
- 40:00Speaker 1: it to them out top and look on the other side?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Will change come? Dr? Dison? Yeah, that's a great question.
- 40:08Speaker 1: Not inevitably, not automatically. Not if we don't do it
- 40:12Speaker 1: to make it happen ourselves. Not if we don't do
- 40:14Speaker 1: the things that will make change happen. It won't happen
- 40:17Speaker 1: because we wish it into existence. It won't happen because
- 40:20Speaker 1: we hope it into existence. It won't even happen if
- 40:22Speaker 1: we pray it into existence. You got to practice it
- 40:25Speaker 1: into existence. We got to operate it into existence. We
- 40:28Speaker 1: got to act and do do real live you know, practice,
- 40:34Speaker 1: real live you know activity, social motion, social revolution, social resistance.
- 40:41Speaker 1: We got to get up and intend the world to
- 40:45Speaker 1: be different. It will not change of its own. You
- 40:49Speaker 1: and I must grapple with the means toward that end.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And I do believe change can come, but only if
- 40:57Speaker 1: we recognize that. We've got to continue to raise our consciousness,
- 41:02Speaker 1: raise our voices, and raise the awareness of the dominant
- 41:08Speaker 1: culture and among ourselves of what things should be done,
- 41:12Speaker 1: what things should be addressed, the mechanisms by which that
- 41:15Speaker 1: change occurs, and how we can continue to resist link
- 41:20Speaker 1: arms and Naimes, as Susan Taylor says, with other like
- 41:23Speaker 1: minded people to make a difference in that sense, Yes,
- 41:27Speaker 1: I am hopeful, not optimistic optimism as the Ryan Holdnieber
- 41:31Speaker 1: the Theologian ship as a said, as a shallow virtue.
- 41:34Speaker 1: But hope is deep. Hope is something that you believe
- 41:37Speaker 1: in even when you can't see the evidence for it.
- 41:39Speaker 1: You keep all moving forward. That's what I have, and
- 41:42Speaker 1: I do believe that change will come. Sam Cook has
- 41:45Speaker 1: told us that here's something I've I've heard this a
- 41:48Speaker 1: lot of her. Tom Trump saying, there's a lot the
- 41:50Speaker 1: word counsel is in your chapter four seeing read when
- 41:53Speaker 1: you start talking about counseling culture a culture cancelation and
- 41:57Speaker 1: Trump is saying that when you when you get rid
- 41:59Speaker 1: of the the Confederate Statute, that's counseling that culture denied.
- 42:03Speaker 1: But then he doesn't let everybody know that we've been
- 42:06Speaker 1: canceled all the way because that information about slavery. You
- 42:09Speaker 1: know how Jim crow Laws is counseled because they don't
- 42:12Speaker 1: tell us about that because they don't want white people
- 42:14Speaker 1: to be uncomfortable when he's sitting in the classroom talking
- 42:16Speaker 1: about what the ancestors did to us. So we've lived
- 42:19Speaker 1: a life of culture cancelation. What is your So I'm
- 42:23Speaker 1: I feel I'm with the right man to ask this question.
- 42:26Speaker 1: What is culture cancelation of canceling culture. That's a brilliant,
- 42:30Speaker 1: brilliant analysis, and we have certainly been canceled. You are
- 42:34Speaker 1: so right. That's why I'm against councel culture in our expression,
- 42:39Speaker 1: because white supremacy is cancel culture. And I'm saying the
- 42:43Speaker 1: councel culture even if we call it black Twitter or
- 42:46Speaker 1: social media. Look, you might get a Bill cos but
- 42:49Speaker 1: you might get a Harvey Weinstein, you might get an R. Kelly,
- 42:52Speaker 1: But for the most part, you're doing the lateral movement.
- 42:54Speaker 1: You're doing peer to peer and even some of the
- 42:56Speaker 1: powerful people you go after because you disliked them. But
- 42:59Speaker 1: the cancel another human being, that's a white supremacist fashion,
- 43:03Speaker 1: uh fantasy. That's a delusion that we can totally eviscerat
- 43:07Speaker 1: or wipe out, hold accountable, yes, make people responsible, yes,
- 43:11Speaker 1: but to cancel them if you make a mistake, once
- 43:14Speaker 1: you're done and gone. I believe if Martin Luther King Jr.
- 43:18Speaker 1: And Malcolm X were here today, they would be canceled.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Somebody would be trying to cancel them because of their faults,
- 43:23Speaker 1: because of their failures, because of their narrowness on some issues.
- 43:27Speaker 1: And yet these men did extraordinary things for us, the
- 43:31Speaker 1: absence of which would make us far poorer in spirit
- 43:36Speaker 1: and in racial achievement. So to me, I'm not meaning
- 43:40Speaker 1: what Donald Trump is meaning. He's a about cancel culture
- 43:42Speaker 1: as pulling down them during uh Confederates flags and statues. Yeah, uh,
- 43:48Speaker 1: you know what. I'm all for that. I'm all for
- 43:52Speaker 1: pulling them off the pedestal. That's not what I mean
- 43:54Speaker 1: by cancel culture. His notion of cancel culture is the
- 43:58Speaker 1: ability to continue to be demagogic and to be dictatorial,
- 44:03Speaker 1: and to be fascist, and to be anti just anti black,
- 44:08Speaker 1: anti brown, anti indigenous, and to be exempt from social
- 44:13Speaker 1: critique and moral responsibility. That ain't what I'm talking about.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I'm talking about the inclination to believe that your moral
- 44:21Speaker 1: position is the only one, that the way you deal
- 44:25Speaker 1: with people with whom you disagree or who honestly make
- 44:27Speaker 1: mistakes is to obliterate them is to wipe them out
- 44:31Speaker 1: so that they have no comeback if they make one mistake,
- 44:34Speaker 1: whether they're the governor of Virginia who appears in black face.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And if you canceled him, what would you have missed
- 44:42Speaker 1: the fact that he restored the voting rights of ten
- 44:44Speaker 1: thousand ex prisoners UH in returning citizens in Virginia, a
- 44:49Speaker 1: large proportion of whom we're black, the stuff he did
- 44:52Speaker 1: with public health UH, and also the wealth disparities and
- 44:57Speaker 1: some of the social justice issues there. If you cancel him,
- 45:01Speaker 1: you cancel the opportunity to reorganize the logic of democracy
- 45:06Speaker 1: in Virginia. So the thing is not to cancel people.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Hold them accountable, make them responsible. Yes, pay for your
- 45:14Speaker 1: quote sins, But allow me a comeback so I can
- 45:17Speaker 1: say what what LLL. Don't call it a come back.
- 45:19Speaker 1: I've been here for years, Mama said, knock you out.
- 45:23Speaker 1: Let me have a chance to be redeemed, to be restored.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I am not down with this evisceration, this eradication, this extirpation.
- 45:32Speaker 1: This is just wiping them out because I disagree with you,
- 45:35Speaker 1: whether it's about sexuality, whether it's about gender, whether it's
- 45:38Speaker 1: about race. I don't want to witch hunt through white America. Heye,
- 45:41Speaker 1: twenty years ago, did you call somebody the inn word
- 45:44Speaker 1: or did you do something wrong? I'm sure a lot
- 45:46Speaker 1: of people did a lot of stupid stuff. Or when
- 45:48Speaker 1: somebody's thirteen years old and they the miignorant stuff and
- 45:52Speaker 1: now here they are fifteen years later trying to you know,
- 45:56Speaker 1: become a ball player or get drafted, and we go
- 45:59Speaker 1: dig up about the stupid stuff that feat I mean, right,
- 46:04Speaker 1: And my thing is, I'm not saying don't hold people
- 46:06Speaker 1: accountable for if you still feel the same thing at
- 46:09Speaker 1: at that you felt a thirteen and it was racist
- 46:12Speaker 1: and vicious, that's a different story. But if you evolved,
- 46:15Speaker 1: if you've grown, if you said some stuff when you
- 46:18Speaker 1: were younger it was dumb, or you said some stuff
- 46:20Speaker 1: that when you were younger, and now that you're more
- 46:22Speaker 1: mature in a different position, you're willing to change your mind.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Let's provide people the opportunity to grow intov all. I
- 46:30Speaker 1: believe with that, you know, in reading your book and
- 46:32Speaker 1: I'm talking to Dr Eric Dice, Michael Eric Dyson A
- 46:35Speaker 1: long time coming up reckoning with the RACI in America.
- 46:38Speaker 1: The thing that it was two things in the book
- 46:40Speaker 1: that really I was just taking it back. The detail
- 46:43Speaker 1: you know in your book, how you timelined out you know,
- 46:47Speaker 1: George Floyd's murder, how you timelined out the interactions between
- 46:53Speaker 1: human Aubrey when he was hunted down black man running
- 46:57Speaker 1: in the neighborhood. You know, uh, you know, the father
- 47:01Speaker 1: and son and then the cameraman who said he was
- 47:04Speaker 1: just there alone for the moment, but then he blocked
- 47:07Speaker 1: his path. So what I'm telling you is this, you
- 47:10Speaker 1: gave me information I didn't know, which is a brilliant
- 47:14Speaker 1: Uh understand, because you realized that we need people like
- 47:18Speaker 1: you to give us the additional details because the media
- 47:22Speaker 1: is only gonna give you a minute or nanny seconds
- 47:25Speaker 1: or caption of what it is. This book gives you
- 47:28Speaker 1: the details, especially on that my my mom Aubrey. If
- 47:31Speaker 1: you want to know exactly where we went down, you
- 47:34Speaker 1: gotta ride. They gotta buy your book, Michael, because your book.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Man is like, I was like, wow, you know, I
- 47:40Speaker 1: mean from the time he got shot, then he got
- 47:42Speaker 1: shot again, and then he hit him to try to
- 47:45Speaker 1: fend himself off while he was being pursued, while he
- 47:49Speaker 1: was being shot in attack, how he was cut off
- 47:52Speaker 1: by this quote unquote. I was just there to take
- 47:55Speaker 1: film everything. I wasn't trying to stop him from escaping
- 47:58Speaker 1: or trying to stop him from doing it. Thing. Wow,
- 48:01Speaker 1: how did all this information come to you? And how
- 48:03Speaker 1: did you think to detail it out like that? Because
- 48:06Speaker 1: I'm telling it's brilliant, because it opened my eyes and
- 48:09Speaker 1: brought me emotionally back to the forefront. I got to
- 48:12Speaker 1: know more. I need to know more. And this is
- 48:15Speaker 1: a fantastic book. Well, first of all, I talked to
- 48:17Speaker 1: a lot of people on this book tour, and you
- 48:20Speaker 1: wanted the very few to dig into that, to acknowledge that,
- 48:23Speaker 1: to talk about that. And I thank you for reading
- 48:26Speaker 1: the book thoroughly, my man number one, because everybody who
- 48:31Speaker 1: talking to you ain't read Joe book. And you have
- 48:33Speaker 1: read it. Not only have you read it, you read
- 48:35Speaker 1: it thoroughly. Um, And that's a real honor, and thank
- 48:39Speaker 1: you for that. Yes, I wanted to lay that out. Look,
- 48:41Speaker 1: I did the quote spade work. I did the shoe
- 48:44Speaker 1: leather on the pavement kind of work. I went and
- 48:46Speaker 1: dug up the facts. I listened to the transcripts um
- 48:50Speaker 1: of what was happening, there. I looked at the film.
- 48:52Speaker 1: I looked at the breakdown, I looked at the timing.
- 48:55Speaker 1: I looked at what the father was doing. I looked
- 48:57Speaker 1: at what they claimed that they were doing. But, like
- 48:59Speaker 1: you said, the witness, I'm just there as an innocent party.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Now you the third dude there, and you try to
- 49:06Speaker 1: block my man from going any further and then retroactively
- 49:10Speaker 1: after the fact ex post facto, you trying to, as
- 49:14Speaker 1: my daddy would say, make like you the darned hero,
- 49:18Speaker 1: and you're the one who made it possible for the
- 49:20Speaker 1: film to get out in the world. But you know
- 49:22Speaker 1: them other two white boys are the father and son
- 49:24Speaker 1: are mad at him. Why the hell are you recording this?
- 49:29Speaker 1: And that recording is essentially it should clench our conviction.
- 49:35Speaker 1: It should put us in jail for the rest of
- 49:38Speaker 1: our lives, because we hunted this man down like an animal.
- 49:41Speaker 1: He was unarmed, he had no possibility of self defense,
- 49:46Speaker 1: he had committed no crime, and out of wanting disregard
- 49:50Speaker 1: for his life and the stereotypical pursuit of a black
- 49:55Speaker 1: man as an animal, they went and hunted him down
- 49:57Speaker 1: and shot him and killed him. And I wanted every
- 50:00Speaker 1: element of that to be brought to the fort, the
- 50:03Speaker 1: details to be rich so that people can understand exactly
- 50:06Speaker 1: what went down. I'm telling some again because now I
- 50:10Speaker 1: this day why he was, you know, brought up on charges,
- 50:13Speaker 1: because at first all that could be in with witness witness,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and then when they brought him up on charges, I
- 50:17Speaker 1: really didn't understand why he brought up on charges. But
- 50:20Speaker 1: then when you say he cut him off, which forced
- 50:22Speaker 1: armand Aubrey to go back towards the father and son
- 50:26Speaker 1: duo who were pointing guns at him, and then they
- 50:29Speaker 1: dropped out the truck. And that's when he was just
- 50:31Speaker 1: fighting for his life. After that, he was just fighting
- 50:33Speaker 1: for his life after that. And then when you looked
- 50:35Speaker 1: at and then when you laid down the detail on
- 50:38Speaker 1: George Floyd, you know, one was on his neck, one
- 50:41Speaker 1: was on his back, and one was on his legs.
- 50:44Speaker 1: That type of detail really allowed me to appreciate you know,
- 50:48Speaker 1: your your your the ability to tell your story. You're
- 50:50Speaker 1: a great storyteller. You're great story We need great storytellers
- 50:53Speaker 1: because of the fact that great storytelling tied the great
- 50:56Speaker 1: facts and great information. And you're live a little tremendous
- 50:59Speaker 1: about of information that uplifted me, opened my eyes, and
- 51:02Speaker 1: I also allowed me to be able to share this
- 51:04Speaker 1: book with other my fans, my family member, my daughter
- 51:07Speaker 1: and people know need to understand. I just love the
- 51:10Speaker 1: way you told the story and tied into an individual
- 51:13Speaker 1: who's been traumatized and they traumatized to the point that
- 51:16Speaker 1: they were killed by transactional whether it was tied to
- 51:20Speaker 1: the police or community gang violence type situation that happened
- 51:24Speaker 1: to the fifteen year old of Chicago, a young lady
- 51:27Speaker 1: by name of Pumpton, who all knew as a scholar
- 51:29Speaker 1: student and all that in her life was snuff dit.
- 51:31Speaker 1: And your beauty of this story is like the whatever
- 51:35Speaker 1: right right? No? Thank you again. The close reading mcdonnald
- 51:42Speaker 1: was doing here is an object lesson in critique, criticism
- 51:47Speaker 1: and engagement with a book. Man, this is what this
- 51:50Speaker 1: is what authors like live for. Did somebody take them seriously?
- 51:54Speaker 1: You ain't gonna agree with me. Just read what the
- 51:55Speaker 1: heck guy said. And I don't even care if you
- 51:58Speaker 1: argue with me, aren't you based on the facts of
- 52:00Speaker 1: what you read? And that's what you're doing. Man, Thank
- 52:03Speaker 1: you so much. And yes, I wanted to talk about
- 52:05Speaker 1: both hands. The Pendleton I wanted to talk about. Now
- 52:09Speaker 1: we know it's really called neighbor to neighbor violence. People
- 52:12Speaker 1: kill where they live. Er black people who are killed
- 52:15Speaker 1: are killed by black people, but eighty four percent of
- 52:17Speaker 1: white people who are killed are killed by white people.
- 52:20Speaker 1: So we ain't got no Oh my god, why don't
- 52:22Speaker 1: white crime is gonna drive White America into the dull
- 52:24Speaker 1: drums and create catastrophe. People kill where they live. They
- 52:28Speaker 1: don't get on no bus and take no tram and
- 52:30Speaker 1: take no train, opt to kill nobody. They're killing right
- 52:33Speaker 1: where they are, because that's where the drama is. That's
- 52:35Speaker 1: where the trauma is, that's where the hurt is, that's
- 52:38Speaker 1: where the beef is. She was mistaken for a gang member,
- 52:42Speaker 1: right they shot into the crowd, shot her in the back.
- 52:46Speaker 1: One of them shot her, the other one drove the
- 52:48Speaker 1: getaway car, and she was killed. Three lives lost, two
- 52:52Speaker 1: of them are serving life in prison, and her dear
- 52:55Speaker 1: Pendleton is lost. And that is the tragedy I wanted
- 52:58Speaker 1: to speak about to illuminate the context of council culture
- 53:03Speaker 1: because I draw a parallel between us snuffing out our
- 53:06Speaker 1: own in the radius of our intimacy, where are kin
- 53:10Speaker 1: folk are that ends up hurting and harming them and
- 53:14Speaker 1: the way in which cancel culture operates to destroy communities, well,
- 53:19Speaker 1: destroy careers, and destroy human beings based upon the digital
- 53:24Speaker 1: lynch mob going out getting like they used when they want.
- 53:28Speaker 1: You mentioned Emmett Till when they hung him and murdered him.
- 53:31Speaker 1: It's a digital version of that lynch mob going on,
- 53:35Speaker 1: and I wanted to address that and as honest and
- 53:38Speaker 1: straightforward a way as possible. Well, thank you Michael for
- 53:40Speaker 1: coming on the show. Thank you for giving me a
- 53:42Speaker 1: book to read. Uh, you know, this is my new show.
- 53:46Speaker 1: I'm have a little table and we'll put back here
- 53:48Speaker 1: and it's gonna be one of the books. I'm gonna
- 53:49Speaker 1: keep my favorites on that. So if anybody say I
- 53:53Speaker 1: think I saw her Shaw show and he had your book,
- 53:55Speaker 1: it's in behind him again. Man, man, you got a
- 53:57Speaker 1: bunch of book have and have a few selected more.
- 54:00Speaker 1: I think that I called game changers. This is a
- 54:02Speaker 1: game change. And thank you for coming on my show, Michael.
- 54:05Speaker 1: Thank you for having me. You one of the great
- 54:06Speaker 1: figures in our community and in our culture. You've been
- 54:09Speaker 1: out here for you a long distance runner. You ain't
- 54:11Speaker 1: no sprinter a long distance run that you've made my brother,

- 57:16Speaker 1: She learned the basis at the cardon Blue, but she
- 57:19Speaker 1: soon re lies that her own love for cooking cane
- 57:21Speaker 1: from her youthful soul and love for fusion cuisine. Chef
- 57:24Speaker 1: tre Gay is a successful, self employed mother who relates
- 57:27Speaker 1: best to a younger generation. She's the first African American
- 57:30Speaker 1: woman to win Food Network Star, two time competitor of
- 57:34Speaker 1: Cutthrough Kitchen, and three time Competitive Guys Grocery Games. She
- 57:37Speaker 1: has her own show on the own network called triggage
- 57:40Speaker 1: Way that airs every Saturday afternoon at twelve thirty pm.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Please working the money making conversation. She got a lot
- 57:46Speaker 1: to say now, Chef Triggy, whoa boy? A lot to
- 57:53Speaker 1: say now about you? Nine, let's talk about it because
- 57:57Speaker 1: I you know, I can bake a little bit. Well,
- 57:59Speaker 1: I can really bag, I could really bake and now now,
- 58:02Speaker 1: but these competitions are a different world because see I've
- 58:05Speaker 1: been asked to come on some of these shows as
- 58:08Speaker 1: a contestant. Okay, and I told now not, rather be
- 58:12Speaker 1: a judge. But then I realized that they don't prep
- 58:15Speaker 1: you on the recipes. Okay, Let's let's go. Let's start
- 58:19Speaker 1: with the Food Network. Start where you became the African,
- 58:22Speaker 1: first African American woman to win the Food Network. Start.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Tell us about that competition, oh man, that competition was
- 58:30Speaker 1: really stiff. It was really tight. But you know what,
- 58:33Speaker 1: I'm a firm believer in UM just the power of manifestation,
- 58:37Speaker 1: and I believe anything that I want to do, I
- 58:38Speaker 1: can't do UM. And it was so funny because before
- 58:41Speaker 1: I got on that show, I was want to show
- 58:44Speaker 1: called Cutthroat Kitchen and God's Grocery Games. I had been
- 58:46Speaker 1: doing a lot of competing, right, And I remember sitting
- 58:50Speaker 1: in my bed seeing UM Food Network Star season eleven,
- 58:54Speaker 1: and I was like, well, I see a lot of
- 58:57Speaker 1: people from like Cutthroaw Kitchen and God's Grocer Games. Why
- 58:59Speaker 1: didn't they call me? Was like, it's okay, I'm gonna
- 59:01Speaker 1: call me, and I'm not gonna feel like that long application.
- 59:04Speaker 1: They're just gonna call me and they're just gonna put
- 59:06Speaker 1: me on the show. With two weeks later, Food Network Start,
- 59:09Speaker 1: Cuto Kitchen be Bobby's Play. I'll call me at the
- 59:12Speaker 1: same time to be on the show. So of course
- 59:14Speaker 1: I chose Food Network Start because that's a job UM.
- 59:18Speaker 1: And then I remember because this was like, let's Stu
- 59:23Speaker 1: explain what you just said. You said, Okay, you had
- 59:25Speaker 1: a Bobby Flake called you, right, and then you and
- 59:29Speaker 1: then that what was those show that called you because
- 59:31Speaker 1: the kitchen called me to come back to do like
- 59:32Speaker 1: a reunion show, and then um Food Network Star called
- 59:37Speaker 1: me all in the same time the same day. What
- 59:40Speaker 1: was the difference and what made that decision to go
- 59:42Speaker 1: with the Food Network Star? How could you get a
- 59:44Speaker 1: job like Food Network Star? You become a Food Network Star?
- 59:49Speaker 1: Like what do I want to do? Go play a
- 59:51Speaker 1: competition for a few seconds, or get a job and
- 59:54Speaker 1: become the next Food Network start. I think I'm gonna
- 59:57Speaker 1: go with Food Network Star. And you know at the time,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: you know, I didn't have a lot of money. So
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I remember buying this dress and my bills was doing
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: everything chat but I was like, listen if the dress
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: was like five hundreds. But I was like, listen, this
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: is dress. I'm aware when I win, So I need
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: to get this dress. So I remember getting the dress,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: calling the lady and saying, look this address. Put this
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: in wardrobe because we have to sit in our wardrobe.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: And I said this dress, I'm aware when I win,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: and she laughed at me. But that is the dress
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: that I wore when I want Now. It was a
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: challenge because there are not a lot of people like
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: me on Food Network. I'm very different, I'm very loud,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: I'm very fun um, and I just like to have
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: a good time, you know, as well as cooking as well.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: So you know, I talked a little different. I got
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: a country twang. I'm from Philly, but Atlanta is all
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: up inside of me. So um, you know, I knew
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: that it would be a challenge and I knew that
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: it would be different. It was so funny because the
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: first episode set the tone for the whole season for
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: me to really just shut it down, like I just
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: locked in because I came into it almost like changing myself.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Like I came on and they were like, well, we
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: want you to do a cold open. So I did
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: the cold up in my way, tree Gay Way originally, right, Hey,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I'm tree Gay. It's gonna be killed. Yes, this is
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: this is this, And I remember Gianna saying, well, I
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: like you, but um, I don't know, I've never met
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: anyone like you before. Um you seemed like a caricature,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: That's what she said. So for me, I was like,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I took that as like not taking me serious. So
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I changed. So when we got to redo it, I
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: was like, Hi, I'm chef tree Gay. You know, and
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: I was real like mainstream, but we had to watch
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: the episode in the movie theater that was the challenge.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: Tyler Florence was the judge, the guest judge, Bobby Flay
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and Jia and so we're in this big screen. So
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I was able to see myself outside of myself on
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: this big screen with all these people are here, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I was able to see that that is not the move.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Like I was completely different. I didn't even know who
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I was. I cried, and I remember Giada saying, well,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: who was that? Like? You completely changed? Like I was like, well,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: you know, you said I look like a caricature. And
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I wanted to take this serious because this is a job.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: You know. I need this for my children, myself, you know,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: so for me, you know, I want to be taken serious.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: And she was like, well, I didn't say I didn't
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: like it. I just said I've never seen anything like it.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: She was like, and you just showed us today that
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: you can't even pretend to be someone else besides yourself,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: and we love who you are, so just stay yourself.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: That's all I needed. That was the green light. I
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: was gone. I started winning competition. At the competition and
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: then I took home the prize. That's all I needed
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: to hear was that it was okay to be myself.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: That's important to say. That's why I want you to
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: share that story because of the fact that a lot
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: of people always typically you know, when you fall down,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: only you can get yourself up. If you can pretend
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: to be somebody else when you fall down, you're gonna
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: stay down. And so you should never be who you
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: think for taking advice. If somebody tells you I want
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: you to be this person, if it's not you, it's
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: not your natural way of life, then when you fall
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: a worth that person to get you back up. And
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: so that was a good point to tell everybody when
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I talking about when people are worried about leaving jobs
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: or people worried about career changes, they're worried about what
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: other people may think. What do you think? What do
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: you feel? Do you feel you're gonna be successful at this?
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: And that's all you're saying right there, ri Sean, I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: love somebody to question who I was for the first
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: time in my life. And then she looked at me
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: and went, I just said change. I just had no
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: opinion about who I thought you were, and I realized
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: now that that's the only person you can be, so
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: go back and bid. And that changed your life. Yes, yes,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: it really did. Um, I mean it really just gave
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: me confidence. Like I'm already a pretty confident person, I
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: would like to say, but I think my confidence was
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: a little down at that time because you know, I'm
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: in a room full of people who, you know, experienced
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: things that I haven't experienced. They they speak a different
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: way than I do. You know, they move a different way,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: They're from a different place than I am, you know,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: but they're also older. You start thinking like, I'm limited myself,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like, it doesn't really matter
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: where I'm from. It doesn't matter how I talk, it
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: doesn't matter how I look. As long as I come
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and bring my a game and I do the best
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: that I can do, and I come up and show
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: up and show out. It really don't matter what these
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: people have done and where they come from. And I
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: had to take a step back in and really, you know,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: tap myself on the end, like, no, girl, like you
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: have to admit that you were dealing with an age
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: different as well. You wanted the younger chef that have
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: gotten into those type of competitions. Okay, and let's say
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: a little hip hop in your life. Okay, you know,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you know, a little Dirty South in your life, and
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: so the little flavor in your life, and so that
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: is good for your brand. So when you when you
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: want what were the immedia changes that you felt in
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: your career when you want food Network start, um my
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: immediate changes where you know, I started to become a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: part of like this different crowd. You know, all of
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the people that I would look at on TV as
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: a kid, like they're my coworkers. Um, Like we're getting
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: paid the same amount, one of the same things, like
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: one shows like they are so so real. Um. Once
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: I got past like the starstruck moment and just realized,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: like we're all on the same playing field. Um, I
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: just kept going with whatever they were bringing to me. However,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: I did learn that, um there may have been like
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a niche or y'all'll read that I should be in
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like what it didn't go?
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: You know what I tell people all the time, Sometimes
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: when you get on TV, you just have these expectations,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: um to just skyrocket like you're the next star. Now,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: like you know you're gonna get it in me. But
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: I had to learn very quickly that that's not how
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: it goes. This is a business, um business, and when
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: you're up, you up, and when you're down, you down.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: But when you're down, you know, what I learned was
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: to look at it as you know, this thing that
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: we call TV is really to market and promote me
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: and my business. So I got smart and I decided
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: because you know it's it wasn't it's addictive, you know,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: to be on a TV show and to be doing
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: these large commercials. I mean I've done Johnsonville commercials, national brands, laughing,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: cow cheese. I mean they were with me, a part
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: of all these big things. So who become became addictive?
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: You know? That's all I wanted to do. I kind
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: of forgot about everything else that I did, and I
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: remember I was super sad because you know, again I'm different.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: So they had to find a place to put me.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Um and listen, when I want Food Network, Starry, it
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: wasn't our Roses and Peaches. You know, was kind of
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: like what who you know? Um? So I had to
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: kind of get past that. But then I remember talking
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: to Duff and Duff is a I don't know if
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: you know Duff, but he's a cake guy on food
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: Network Super Big. And I remember saying, man, what do
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: you do when you get in these positions? Because at
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: the time, like there wasn't a lot of TV coming in. Um,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I was not even focusing on my business. I was
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: more so like, why am I not getting more stuffy?
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: You know? It was like a fast ride than one day.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: It was just like skirt, it slowed all the way down.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: And he said, you know what I did when that
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: happened to meetri Gae. I said what he said, I
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: just started doing what I did to get me them
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: the first place. Just started making cakes. So I said,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: you know what, You're right. I went and I started
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: back doing my catering, started back doing my meal prep.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: I started the line of products, my chef knife, my
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: season ends, my plant face butter. I just really put
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: everything that I was putting into television into myself. I
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: got my own production company and I started doing like
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: YouTube and stuff. Um I started doing this thing culture
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: Gate Eats Atlanta, and I would use I basically utilized
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: my resources. You know, I didn't I got I gained
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: so much from becoming a food network start because I
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: gained relationships, which are more important than even being on TV. Right,
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: So I was like, Okay, well, shoot, let me call
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: some of these producers. Let me call this, let me
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: call it a little the show I'm thinking about doing.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Let me call these restaurants. I've done twenty five episodes,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: the best thing I ever ate, so I know they're
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: gonna let me come and review that restaurant. This good
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: show for me. So I started doing that on YouTube.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I just kept going and then one day I start
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: getting callbacks. They started wanting me back on TV. I
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: guess they were watching. They were waiting. You weren't waiting, chef.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: You weren't waiting. That was the key. You weren't waiting
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: for them, and so the time that you were waiting
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: that was really making your answer you. Now we're filling
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: up with quality time. You work, building your resume at
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: your bio, and I tell people all that time. So
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: so now you're on own network. Okay, you gotta show
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: on the Oprah winfree network named after you. Okay, named
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: after you, But again, that still doesn't mean you should
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: sit around and wait for the next opportunity to make
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: your next opportunity. So the show comes on Saturday. It's
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: well third every Saturday on the own network, Tree Gauge Way.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I know what that show is about. What are you
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: doing to build momentum beyond that show? As that show
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: is airing? Um, you know right now, since we're aeron
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: Win the first season, I'm just kind of getting a
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: lot of feedback. I'm I'm I'm educating myself more and
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: more recipes and more ideas and like what do people
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: want to know? I'm so proud of Tree Gays Way,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: like because it ain't been my way for so long,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And they have a show
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: named Sure Gays Made, and then it's like now I
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: maybe to like really see knowledge into people because I'm
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: really big into education, like educating people. UM. So I'm
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: just kind of taking what I have now the shows
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: are airring, and I'm just pushing what I have. I'm
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: pushing my products, I'm pushing more glasses, I'm doing stuff
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: with um my junior chefs. I'm trying to create more
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: things and more ideas around that. UM And the meantime
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: in between times, I'm working on my book because I
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: definitely have a story to tell So I'm in the
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: process of working on that UM and then I'm also
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: getting ready to open a a prep kitchen because and
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: in the front of it will be a UM a
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: specialty store because I have so many products and you know,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: especially right now with pandemic going on, one of the
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: things I realized in the beginning of the pandemic was
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: that there are so many chefs that need a place
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: to cook. They are like, they just need a kitchen
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: in these places they've charged so much. So I'm gonna
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: provide a safe haven for chefs to come and rent
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: out my kitchen space and also sell their products in
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: my specialty store so we could just keep building on
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: what we already have, which will also be a great
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: hub for the catering company. And I've been doing a
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: lot of catering lately. I've been doing a lot of
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: cooking classes lately, working on some seminars. So I'm just
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: building off the things that I already have and just
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: making them better. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: and trying to do something different in the midst like,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: because this is the moment where I need to capitalize
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: off of all the things that I've been doing and better.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: So that's what I love it. I love the fact
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: that you are an entrepreneur because first of all, you
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: you you went in you want Food Network start a blessing,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: but then you got caught up expecting their phone, waiting
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: on their phone to ring. But then advice came your way.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Do the things that got you there. Yes, And that's
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: what I tell people all the time. You know, you
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: know a lot of people that are signed with big
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: agents in l A. And I'm with William Rs. And
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: then just stopped. We know that call to put you
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: in a movie, that call to put you in the sitcom?
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: But why didn't william Are sign you? Like I said,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: why did the Food network start sign you? Because you
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: were busy? Like you said, you were on the cooking
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: kitchen and you went, I should be on that because
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: I've done the grocery games. I've seen these people with
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: guess what, they were being busy too. That's where they
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: got picked. The blessing in this whole conversation is you
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: got picked, but you on. And now from a business standpoint,
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: you understanding what you have to do, keep the wheels
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: moving in a pro direction that you control and that's wonderful.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: What advice we should get people with hear and all this,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: all the things you've come through. You have a popular show,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: like I said, it's on own network airs every Saturday
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: or twel thirty Culture gage Way named after you. Chef,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: your gay Fraser Frasier, not on the show. It's your gay,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: that's her name. She's out of Philly now, she lives
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: in the lab. Got the great personality, got this great smile,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: got to have big hair. Doesn't look like the classic
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: chef that you will see o TV. But you But
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: but food is the number one viewed in social media,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: is the number one viewed on YouTube. And I've just
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: been waiting for the black stars like you just start
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: percolating to the top because black people love food and
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I'm tired of our food being just so fooled. You
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. We are a very diverse eating
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: community and that's what you're showing today to gage Way.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: Tell us about your show, Oh man, your gaze Way.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: It's so amazing. I literally just take food and recipes
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: that I do with my family and my friends, and
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: then I'm giving it to the people at home. You know. Um,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: We're in the fifth episode. Now, I literally everybody who
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: you see on my show, it's not a game. They're
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: really my children, they are really my family, they are
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: really my friends. Um. The beautiful thing about this show
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: is like when Oprah gave me the opportunity, she was
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: literally like, do whatever you want. And to have that
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: opportunity is like so amazing. So I said, if I'm
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: gonna do that, I'm gonna do that to the fullest.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: So one of my episodes are like brunch with my boys.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: So my you know, I do list to my son.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: He loves hot cheetos. So I did it like before here, No,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: so I did. I'm sorry, y'all. So I did a
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: hot cheetah crusted chicken with cheddar chid waffles, and you
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: know another one how crusted chicken with cheddar chid waffles
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: and roasted red pepper sarah. Um. Then I did one
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: with my best friend and you know, he was one
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: of the biggest um Waste training line, like he does
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: the male waste trainers and he's a super big at
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the gay community. And it was beautiful to be able
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: to bring him on the show. One to show how
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: versatile I am to where I also do healthy food too,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: because I could do classes for cancer patients here in
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: the Atlanta area and so that was good. And then
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: to also be able to talk about my friend. You know,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: he came out to me, and you know, I wanted
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: him to be the best that he could be. And
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: so I felt that that would touch so many other
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: people who are going through that point in their life
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: and and seeing that you know, once you just be yourself.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I'm always about being yourself. And that was also when
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: the stenching of be yourself from the moment, from the
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: food that we're starting to even that you know from
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and that I encouraged that from other people. Another one
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: with friends Giving, where we did jerk turkey wings and
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: naked apple pie and I go to the apple orchard
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: with my best friend and we have so much fun.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: And my son's birthday party. So it's like, these are
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: all little things that you probably recognize in your own life.
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: You know, everybody has friends, friends give it, everybody has
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: a little brunch. You know, everybody wants to get snatched.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: And that's another thing I name the show snatched because
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: one thing, um the episode was snatched because one thing
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I noticed is that you know, our lingo. A lot
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: of people. Once you get in this industry, you realize
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: they don't even understand what we're talking about. Now, that's
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: tin So I created a show around that because I'm
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: not just doing it for me. I'm doing it for
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: the culture. You know, I wanted to I want to
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: shine and I want to be relatable and let other
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: chefs like me know that you could do this too.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: You know you could. You could have a little slanging.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: You know you have hell. You know you can do
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: your thing and still be successful. You don't have to
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: be somebody else. You just have to own who you are.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Your friends, I love you, I love you, I love
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: your brand, I love your personality that I love your openness.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I love the fact that if you fall, you're gonna
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: get up because you know why you're doing this in life.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: You're not doing it because somebody told you to do it.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: And that's like you said that first episode. Food Network
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: really allowed you to say, I could be myself and
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: I can win. And you're winning being yourself And I
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: gotta eat that. That that with a hot cheeto girl,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: And I think you made like I did, a braise
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: curry chicken with like a lemon rug killed and coalman
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: and keimwa and um a butternut squashing there and then
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: we did a man Go Dragon food smoothie. Like it's
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: so versatile. We do so many things. One of the episodes,
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna do some colar greens and smother
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: pork chops, like we do everything on that show. Because
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: I want to touch everybody. So I'm based. I'm based
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: in Atlanta. That my office has a full kitchen in
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: it because I love to cook another bag but my staff,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: and like I'm making them red beans and rice this week,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: with corn bread this week. You know they're gonna have that.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Then I'm making a like you I twitched up, and
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: then I'm gonna I'm gonna make a taco salad problem
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: for them on Friday, you know, and individual dishes, gonna
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: try to beat COVID safe and everything. But and so
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: so I want I want you to come by my place.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: You know, we sat down and video tape ourselves having
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: fun making something together and things like that. I I
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: gotta made them a spice cake. The other day, we
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: did a barbecue spread for lunch and my because I
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: wanted a place where I can enjoy my life. You
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: know where if I if I got to work early,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: because you know what happened when I used to work
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: when I didn't own my building, was I make it
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: at home and then I bring it to work. So
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: now they're coming I work. They started, they they're coming there.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: And the other day they came in. I was in
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: the middle of making raising pudding. Okay when the Carl mail,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: I said the meeting was at eight this are you
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: gonna be ready? That's at the word put it in
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: the oven. Forty five minutes later me was open, pulled
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: it out of the oven, let the cool for about
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: ten minutes, having them some some some vanilla bean ice cream,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: and we was having a good time. So that's my
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: life and just hearing you you enjoying your life, and
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: I don't want you to stop enjoying your life. But
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: I wanted to extend the invitation that I want to
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: I want to promote your brand. I want to be
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: able to tell everybody how great you are, uh just
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: living your life, but more important you being you though. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: for sure. Well I got the invite, So you can't
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: take it back, No, no, no, no, you I can't
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: take back no, no, Now I've learned that in this call.
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I know you. You put some on social media about me.
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: You have every shot I'll be I'll be on Instagram story.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: We're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna come over here. And
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: you didn't say chef the kitchen. Absolutely shift come to
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: come to ket you you know. It's a big, roomy kitchen,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: you know. And uh and just let you to talk
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: about your career and stuff like that. And it's about
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: relationships and I'm big on relationship. Anything I can help
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: you do or point you in the right direction. I've
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: been blessed to be able to work with a lot
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: of famous people. I've been blessed to be able to
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: build a lot of big careers, whether this corporate or individual.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: So when I see somebody like you, who who is
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: a unique talent. You are a unique talent, and you're
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: still very young. That means that your future is gonna
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: be bright. But more importantly, you are a hard worker,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: and that's what I love about you. You do not
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: run from the dirty kitchen, especially if you're the one
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: that made it dirty. You're gonna clean that you. I'm
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: just coming from an event taking out the ear rings,
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: lipstick on and everything, and I'm getting in there with
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: my team. My team no I don't like, is gonna
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: figure out another way. And I tell people all the time,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: if I can leave you with anything, it's just never
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: give up. And don't spend so much time worrying about
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: the bad. Takes away from time figuring out the process
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: to get to the good. You know, it's a journey,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: and you know we just gotta keep going through it,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: and it ain't always gonna be great. But when it's good,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: it's good, you know. So I just spend less time
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: focusing on negative more time focusing on positive. I do
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: appreciate the negative. Actually I embrace it um because without it,
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: who could learn? How would I know if it's wrong,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: if it's never happened to me? Kick all the doors, look,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: look close all the doors in my face. I'm gonna
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: kick one down in there and push it back over
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: When she used to start your Gage Way. It airs

- 1:24:47Speaker 1: on I G to help bring joy people in this
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: uncertain time. Her i G Live Food Party was packed
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: with loads of fun cocktails, great music, delicious food and
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: v I P guests now who were not invited. Maybe
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: I'm not v I p N for her little food parties.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna put the three put the word. Look,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: I'm throwing some haide on her. She has a savory
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: spiceline that we wanted to discuss called just Savor by
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Chef Hooda. Please working the money making conversation. She's a
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: good friend of mine because she's gonna be back on
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: the show. We're gonna be kitchen Kitchen. We're gonna be
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: cooking kitchen the kitchen in a minute. Please welcome Chef Hooda.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: How are you doing? My friends? Hi? How are you?
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: You know? I'm throwing a little hating you. You know,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: a little baker got a little salt in there your
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: shot on that he didn't get it. He all hate
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: because he didn't get invited to the v I P
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I G part. We'll tell us about the I G part.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: Is that you that you've been throwing? And why have
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: they been so successful? You know what, by the grace
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: of God, everything that I accomplished gets done um so
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: for because of what's happening in the world. You know,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: it's it's an interesting time. Let's put that um and
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: I think it's also made a lot of people grateful,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: made a lot of people stop. And it's been great
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: because we started the kitchen quarantine parties. Because we're sitting
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: at home, you know, film look down like everybody else
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: was like what can we do? I was like, I can.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: I can show people how to feed themselves. Um, and
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: I can puse our dads depending on who you ask.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: If not, I can act silly and be completely comfortable
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: with that. So it really just started with us wanting
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: to be bringing a little joy and be able to
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: connect with people. And since people were in their kitchens cooking,
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: some of them have never cooked before, some of them
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: oatmeal is their dish of the month. We just wanted
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: to give people some options. So it was really great
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: and it was a wonderful response. We had everyone from
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: Drain the Rock, Johnson uh retweet us or repost us,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: and it's just been really exciting and we've gotten the
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: partner with some major brands and some nonprofits like Red
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: Nose Day. So it's just been fun. You know, I'm
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: just here to have fun and just you know, bring
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: joy in a delicious way with the kitchen. I can
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: bake now, would I can bake? Not? I heard I
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: got in the pirate cake. Let's talk about that. You
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: don't don't have, don't wait, don't do jef holding Dwayne Johnson,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: ain't reposting me now, Okay, Dwayne Jeled the Rock. They
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: don't tell everybody just because they confused because she kind
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: of said that up. You know, I got reposted by
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Dayne's like she should be putting that in her credit.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: She's been reposted. My necklace has been reposted by Dwayne
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: the Rock Johnson. Okay, she is they telling what where?
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: That should be part of the credits, right that. You know,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: what makes a good cook in the kitchen? I'm talking
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: about in the kitchen and what makes a bad cook
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: in the kitchen? Jeff, Oh, that you know. I like
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: to say that everyone can cook. It depends on how much,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: just like anything in life, depends on how much time
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: you dedicate to it and also your attitude going in
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: so a lot of people. I do a lot of
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: touring where I used to before COVID, they do a
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: lot of different cooking demonstrations um for a bunch of
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: different people. And the one thing I always got from
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: people was, Oh, it's overwhelming, or I don't have time,
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: or I can't find ingredients, or I can't do this
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: X y Z is a long list. I always tell
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: people cooking is about expressing love and joy. That's why
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: you cook. You cook because you want to express love
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: and joy. If you go into it with that. Either,
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: even if you know that you can't boil while to
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: save your life, that Bolletari you're gonna make is gonna
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: have a different feel on it. So so I don't
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: think there's bad cooks. I think there's people who just
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: need to find their niche. And also I think that
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: there are people who are just really gifted and it
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: comes back to share the gift. Either way, they can't cook,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: you listen, some people are destined to make really great salads.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: That's just gonna be there. I don't know if they
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: can do the salary. I really, it's it's a you know,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: it's a it's a it's some mad people out there
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: probably strangling you right now and go, hey, you have
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: not met my husband, met my h you have not
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: met my wife. Cannot cook And so so because you
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: know when you're going the kitchen, you know, because the
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: worst person you can learn for my guests could be
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: your your your mom. You know, you know when they
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: just they just grab stuff, just grab a salt shaker,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: grabs some pepper, you know, just start putting. Oh my god,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: these people make me sick. You know, because you can't.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: How is that? I don't know, Get out of my face?
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Can you making You're making me nervous, baby, You're making
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: them in nervous. Baby. So what did you learn? Who
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: taught you? Your your your skill set in the kitchen.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: So we have some amazing cooks in my family, UM
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: My nana, my aunt Peggy used to cook, my uncle Darnell,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: who they all have passed. Um, So I was very
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: blessed in that sense. My mom she has I like
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: to say that she has her signature dishes like no
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: one can. No one can compete with her muffins or
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: her crapes or her roasted chicken. Like she She's not
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: gonna go outside of the box a lot, but when
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: she when she shows up, she shows out. So I
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: like to think that I got a little touch from
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: all of my um, all my relatives, and also just
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: being around different cultures and being around different friends and
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: in their families. What eatin We'll imagine this Because I'm
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: a guy, you know, I'm a short cook, cook, cook,
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: cut baker too. Like you know, say a creamal mushroom
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: soup is always in my cabinet, you know, because I
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: can take me some drumsticks. You know, season the bad
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: bars up, you know, put a little milk mixed that
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: that creamal marshroom poured over there, Put me some cheese
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: on top. Slide that bad bar in the oven by
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: fifty five minutes, come back out. You're looking good? Now?
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: What makes me mad? Because I'm on social media and
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: then I sometimes you know, I'm gonna tell you something.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: I use can peaches for my peach cobbler. I used
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: things like that new people. I never eat that. You know,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: you don't understand that's not real peach cobbler or that's
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: not you're using can Okay, excuse me? Stop? Where do
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: you fall chef holder hood? When? When? When? When it
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: comes to people like me who just want to get
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: the job done, No one just can taste good and
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: make you win. So my philosophy on food has always
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: been you gotta do it works for you. Right If
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: I said these unrealistic expectations, I want you to make
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: eye crust hid dough, I want you to I want
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: you to make your sour dough bread from scratch, then
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: make the creutons. Come on, listen, we're all busy. We
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: all have different things going on. Family, We have jobs,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: we have just things. So you can find a shortcut
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: that is healthy. Um, shortcut that is healthy, I say,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: right healthy. If you can find one that works for you.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: It's okay to get things out of the freezer section,
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: it's okay to they get things out of the can section.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Just make sure you're reading what you get, uh, that
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: you use for your pantry shortcuts, as I like to
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: call it. So if you're getting canned goods, make sure
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: there's not third or seven things in a can of
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: peaches because water, salt, maybe some sugar, that's it. Um.
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: So make sure that you're just reading and informing yourself
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: on those greetings. But I think it's absolutely fine, um,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: because I think we're very far from the days where
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: it's like everything has to be from scratch. It has
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: to me, we're just not time for that. We're in
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: the Instagram world. Listen, when I need things, I need things,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: I just want to know who I was talking to,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: because you know, I'm not trying to insult to anybody.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: I'm just telling Ruth Sean I get you know. I
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: put my pictures on there, they go viral, you know,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: and then to tell people how I made it and
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: then they get mad at me. You know, there's always
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: some person with comments. You know, I have to hide
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: the comments on Facebook. You can hide them. They don't
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: know you hide their their ugliness. You know, they still
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: look like they see it, but on my my timeline,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: you can't see it no more right now. So so
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: so my whole thing is that when when when you
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: come to what you're doing with your career now food Network,
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: tell us about your experience of Food Network and how
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: did it help your brand? Oh, it helped the brand tremendously. Um,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I think all of the milestone things that have happened
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: my career have helped me to whatever the next level
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: is I'm supposed to be on. So I'm very grateful
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: for those experiences food Network. I it was a huge
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: fan of Cut Through Kitchen, and one day I got
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: a call. Uh and there you've been on these calls
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: before where they're kind of selling you on an ideal.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: You're already doing cart wheels about cool on the phone.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: All right, right, right, right, right, right right right. That
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: sounds very interesting. Back when I went on Cut Throw
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: Kitchen and I had a very simple strategy, just do
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: my best and beat everyone. Be quiet, from my head
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: down and do the work. And I kind of put
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: that that mantra, if you will towards everything I do
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: in life. So going on Food Network and setting a
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: record listen, I'm a little competitive, but setting a record
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: for the highest winner on the history of the show.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: I think they were in season seven when I went on. Um,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: it was more than I did. I did say that,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: but I didn't say Dwayne Johnson, whose network record setting
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: champion Cutthroat Kitchen. I just left that Cutthroat Kitchen listen.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: But it was a great experience. Um, it's you know
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: the show very much. For those who aren't familiar with it,
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: it was they sent you sabotages, so they started off
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: with a certain amount of money. You got to be
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: on sabotage. You have to make certain dishes and you
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: do it within a time restrain. And of course they
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: threw curveballs at you. So my ma, I always like
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: to say, the show is kind of like life. You
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: come in with a plan, you gotta make it work.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: You gotta make it work. Um, I think I'm one
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: challenge is supposed to make corn bread and chili. I
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: ended up making m corn No. I was supposed to
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: make corn bread and chili, and I ended up making
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: grips because I forgot all the stuff for the corn
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: bread while I was running around grabbing ingredients. But my
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: story I got. No, No, you cannot panther because I'm
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: a great lover and I'm a corn bread lover, so
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: you would, right, So you went like from corn bread
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: to grit. Now, please expline that to me. Please explain
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: that to listen. I I realized I got because you're
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: running around and everyone's like, oh, it looks so easy
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: on on TV. It's easy to You're in there and
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: you run and trying to remember everything about all the
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: things you forget when you go to the grocery store
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: in your regular life. Now you're under pressure, right right right,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: So let me ask you this. Let me ask you
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: this right quickly, stiff Now when you say okay, this too.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: Question I always wanted to ask, Okay, do you do
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: they okay? They they bring you for they said, look,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: we want you to make you know these combinations of things.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: Do they prep you? Or is on the spot? Is
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: he really on the spot on the I can't do
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: that show TV? Shif I can't do the show, I'm
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: not that skilled. I gotta have a day ahead of time.
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: You know what I'm about to cook. You're telling me
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: for real on TV? There's no no listen, you go
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: from a green room to a set and then the vextine.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: You know it's happening. Okay, So so you you got
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: to move out the way one of them. So, first
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: of all, I know because they called me a couple
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: of times and now that I'd rather be a judge.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: I'd rather be a judge. Now I understand I have
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: I don't have the skill set to be a contestant
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: because if you brought me in that Rashaw mcdowal, we
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: want you to make some corn bread and chilly. I go, okay,
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: why y'all didn't tell me yesterday so I could prepare
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: for this. No, it doesn't work that. No, no, no,
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: your boy gotta have noticed. If you want to get
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: the skills out of me, Cheff, I gotta have notice.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: I'm so. I'm glad you told me now, so when
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: they called me in the future, if I'm blessed to
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: get another phone call, okay, I'm saying, I'm sorry, that's
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: beyond my pay grade. Faith you I got faith? No, no, no, no, no, don't.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: You don't have to. You don't have to pump me up.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: I'm telling you right now, if they called me, I
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: gotta pass because you finally told me the truth. Rashaw
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: all Oaks Society, cupcake Wars, all the cakes, all the
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: cutthroat kitchen, all that the barbecue contest. Those people do
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: not know what is going to go down until they
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: tell them on the spot. I was you know this
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: one happens. You know, they go okay while you still
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: standing the rashon. Uh, like I'm getting my list together. No, no, ship,
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: I'm getting my lie together because because I'm trying to
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: tell y'all, I gotta, I gotta my brain got a
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: blood clot or something, because the part of the brain
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: that's supposed to be cooking is plotted up. So so
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: I tell me, you're just skilled. So when you say
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: you set a record and then but that's amazing for
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: the highest scores. Yes, So what happens is you're supposed
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: to spend money on sabotages. And at some point I
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: was the only girl on the show. There were three
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the guys that's competing against, and at some point I
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: just realized, like you know, you know when you get money,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: but you didn't have to necessarily earn earn, Like, wait
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: a minute, it was like someone just handed me twenty five.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Do I really want to blow ten right this second?
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: I just got it. Let me visit with it for
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: a second, let me let me count it. So at
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: some point I had to just bet on myself and
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: just you know, um, say a prayer and just go
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: with it. Make it do what it cool? Now I
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: gotta ask this one course because I already know right
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: now you have the skill. Said you talked, We talked
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: about your parents. You came from a family of great cooks.
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: Did you go to culinary school? Did did you with
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: your or your trained? Okay, tell us about that because
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: I can't. You can't, like you just learned from your mom,
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: Like then you own the cutthroat kitchen. Something somebody told
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: you some skills somewhere along, Like tell you right now,
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: nobody taught me nothing. And guess what, nothing is locked
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: in this brain. If I don't have a cook book
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: in front of me, show, it's gonna be a problem.
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: It's gonna be a problem. Listen, you'll be okay, Okay.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: The interesting part is I never started off wanting to
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: be a show tell that part of the story. UM,
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: I was going to be a lawyer. Um. And then
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: somewhere around high school I was between lawyer and psychiatry.
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: So I went to school at University of Maryland undergrad
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: for behavioral science sociology, study of groups of people. I
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: love people. That's my sociology, that's my minor. Hey see,
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: I knew I liked you, okay. But at some point,
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: you know, life takes turns and changes. And I had
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: had every job from I worked for a promotion team,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: I worked in PR, worked in event management, I worked
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: retail UM, I worked in the food industry before, so
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: I had all of I was in hospitality management before
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: I went to culinary school, and I was like, okay,
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: I was running hotels and work for Barryot and be
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: a GM like that was a new goal. And then
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: at some point I decided that I wanted to the
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: culinary school because this food was the one thing no
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: matter what was going on in my life, I always
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: came back to always like cooking for people. It always
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: called me when I had a stressful day, and no
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: matter what I was doing, it always brought me joy.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: So I wanted to share that joy, but I also
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: wanted to do it in the best way possible, in
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: a knowledgeable way. So I went to the quarter on
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: blue um and graduate top temper in my class, a
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: little competitive mot um, and you know, just really took
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: that education and learned so many things that I didn't
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: think that I needed to know because I was like,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: you know, I'm like most people. I was like, I
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: can cook. I got some pasta and make good. And
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: then you get to colinary school and you realize there's
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: so many different things. Like anything. When you go to school,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: you learned that that next level of education or information
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: you didn't even know you wanted, but now of it.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: So now it's just one more thing in your tool
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: belt for life. So I I highly recommend calling every school.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: But if you learn from your grandma, you learned from
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: the restaurant that you're starting off at, whatever wherever your
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: education comes from, just make sure you hear your gifts.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: So now you have his line of spice flavors, a
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: premium gamete spice line inspired by global cuisine. Tell us
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: how did they get started? Is it online? Right now?
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: You know, in the middle of the cyber Monday, you know,
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: come out for Black Friday. Can we go online to
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: buy this? But first tell us about this because I
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: love spicy food from Houston, Texas. You know, I love
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Cajun food. I love put some good salt on my food,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: some good let me pep on my food. I just
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: love spicy food. So what I saw a spice flavor
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: lit I got excited. Well, yes, so as you can tell,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: or you might think. I love spices too. I love flavors.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: I love different bringing different flavors through in different dishes
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: if you don't expect it. So just sabor. We're actually
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: selling our and I was like, yeah, we're selling our
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: new gift boxes for Cyber Monday and also we'll have
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: some sales during the holiday season. Um. With the gift box,
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: you get three of our signature spices, you get a
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: couple of class step by step instruction by me, and
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: we sent you two recipes to nude recipes for you
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: to try as well. Do you say you get a
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: cooking class. A cooking class, how does that work? I'm
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: through zoom right, so zoom. So when you get your
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: spice boxes, we currently have four designated spice boxes and
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: we're gonna come up with four different classes per months.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: So the spice box, you'll get an invite to the
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: class that works with the spice pack that you ordered,
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: and then I'll instruct you on how naked and we'll
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: have good time. We'll have fun in the kitchen and
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: you kind of get to be in my kitchen space.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: We'll have a soundtrack and all the good stuff and
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: a Q and A afterwards, and it's just really a
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: time for people. It's like, Okay, a lot of us
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: buy things were like, oh that's spice, looks good, and
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: you don't do it when you got home. When you
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: get home, So we want to do the cooking class
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: so people know how to use the spices. Now. The
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: just savor line, that savor r, the Savory spice line
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: is rich spices from around the world. You have garlic goodness,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: ShaSS a lot saila sha sailor maple sugar magic that
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: sounds fantastic, mathing sugar that sounds like something you put
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: on with some bottom cue right there. It's a good
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: old some good beans right there. So we have all
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: these new flavors. Chef, you mess with me now like
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: that I got you with the barbecue chicken, the apple
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: woods smoke sea salt. That's k as well. See, I
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: love I love baked potatoes. Okay, I love baked potato. Okay. Cool.
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: So like that's spicy garlic madness on some baked potato
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: right there. That you're making jerk spice on some baked
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: potatoes right there? Oh my god, is it a lot
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: a lot sea salt right there? That's come on, now
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: you're messing with me. Now listen. We had to bring
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: the flavors. We started off with our salt free because, um,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: being a massam her Mary Heart Association, you know, heart
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: disease is near and dear to my heart. Um, and
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: I really want to do my part to allow people
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: to have flavor but also live their healthy salt free
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: lifestyles or just included into their traditional lifestyles. But I
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: wanted to be able to create a product that would
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: be able to open people's mind about what salt free
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: cooking is, but also give them really good flavors as well.
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: But like I said, you know, the Savor Spice line
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: is in the verde of salt free. Like you said,
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: heart healthy lifestyle, the spices of vegan. You didn't say that,
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: but I'm saying it for you and your gluten free
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: natural with no MSG additives or preservatives. See I see,
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna convert. I'm your well dressed commercial friend. Now
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: now tell us how we can go online and get this.
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: I know I'm gonna drop this in my newsletter this
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: week that goes out Wednesday. I'm gonna put this at
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: the top of my newsletters to register on news letter
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: money Making Conversation dot com, and you will see Roshan
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: McDonald tells the true because I love the box. I
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: love the look, I love the factor you can get
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: a class. I love that there are twenty spice singers
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: to spice flavors tied to this whole brand because, like
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: I said, the Jamaican jam and jerk you got me
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: right there. I'm telling me, I'm so the maple sugar magic,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: I'm sold right there, the spicy garlic madness right there,
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: and then the apple Woods smoke. See so come on now,
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: my favorite you, it changes, it changes how you right there.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: I just I see that in Greens right there, the
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: apple Woods. See so I said that in Greens you know,
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: and like I said, I'm just telling you what Rushance
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: you could try this all all your meats, all this
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: this was spices all about. I'm telling you when I can,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: he's something that I immediately go I like it because see,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I love That's why I love that maple sugar magic.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Because I love bitter sweet. I like you know, sugar salt.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: I like those flavors that kind of like when I eat,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: it gives me a mixed vibe and it's a certain
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: level enjoyment. That's why I love your spices. And I'm
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: telling them jerk, I love me some jerk flavor. The
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: fact you got jam and jerking there, I'm so, I'm
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: so I appreciate that. I'm I'm so excited. I am
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: gonna get you a new box you have. You have
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: the spices. We had our salt free line first, but
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: now that we have more flavors, it's the cool thing
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: about it. First of all, I have, you know, I
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: have a home in Houston. I've been blessed have a
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: home in Atlanta, and I have an office kitchen. Okay,
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: So when you when when the ship, it's gonna stay
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: at my office, okay, and then I manna have my
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: other shipment at my house. That way, I'm like I
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: don't have to take my little jam and jerk to
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: the office or take it to the house and forget
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: the brain. One day, I'm cooking in my office and
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: looking at cabinets missing, so all that gonna be. I'm
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: gonna take a photo of showing it in my cabinet,
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: and then we're gonna get together. We're gonna come back on,
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: come back together, and I'm gonna be in my kitchen.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: You're gonna be in your kiden. Were gonna have some fun. Okay,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: it sounds like a good time. It sounds like a
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: culinary party. I'm here for it. I'm on v I
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: p y'all, I'm fee came out. I love it. I
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: really gonna thank you for taking your time to come
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: on my show. Because more importantly, I love talking to
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: people in the food industry. I love talking to chefs.
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: Is a culinary world that you know a lot of
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: people want they go to restaurants, they don't know there's
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: a black chef back there. They don't know that blacks
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: are how really dominating it. And then also the fact
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: that I like to bring on chefs because you know,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: the black community has a sense of what chefs are
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: you know, the neighborhood sold food joints and we're doing
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: more than that in the kitchen, Man Salmiches, I have
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: them all on this show. They all come over here
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: and I left. I got a man on Duado out
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: of Seattle who's coming on the show, rotting the Sky
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: down in Carolina. So they all come on my show.
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: My boy blessed so out of l A, who I
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: started way back day when we were just doing barbecue
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: and Compton, California. So now they have you on my show.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: I want to thank you for taking the time. But
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: you are family now, Okay, you beautiful. First of all,
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: I just love your look. I love your hair. You
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: know when you came on and I said, I love
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: your style. With that being said, I know why our
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: TV loves you. I know you a got that telling
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: when your television honor, you're gonna get more than that
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: and we're gonna be friends. Okay me you friends? Okay,
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: I got you, I got you. Yes here we are yes, okay,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: just savor. That's why it's uh spice flavors or twenties signatures,
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: spice flavors Like I said, Jam and Jorge Garling. Goodness
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: that I was just calling out my favorite. You know,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: I'm just keeping holding out my favorite, you know. But
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: she has over twenty signals. Spices they're like I said,
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: they're vegan and gluding free, one natural with no M
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: s G. Thank you for coming on my show again. Okay,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: thank you, thank you so much. And everyone go to

- 1:53:19Speaker 1: welcome to Money Making Conversations. Derek Rutledge. Hey, hey everybody
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: out here, how you doing well? First of all, Derek,
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: you know I first of all being on the line
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: with somebody who knows how to get the face right?
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: How did that start? How did the whole makeup things start? Well,
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: you know, we have twenty five minutes here, so I
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: you know, I could tell you talk to you for
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: the next three hours about that, but I'm gonna condense
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: it for you. But you college um, from college to
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: working with a publisher that took me to Europe and
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: creating a wonderful portfolio that brought me back here to
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: work with Deadly Cosmos Costology for about four years. From
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: there to be et that, I was there for about
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: five years and that's why I got to meet so
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: many of the wonderful celebrities that I worked with now
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: and worked with continuously for about twenty years, UM going
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: you know, doing UM tours and mute movie videos and
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: movies and videos and award shows, and then from there
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: to getting that call of to come in an audition
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: for the First Lady Michelle Obama and was there from
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: two thousand and nine until eleven. And then while I
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: was there, Oprah Winfrey saw my work and asked me
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: if I were come in an audition for her. And
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: once I did that, I was working with both Michelle
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Obama and uh first you know, Oprah Winfrey and then
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: the because their schedules are so rigorous and they had
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: such a tight schedule, it was very difficult to work
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: with those who have made the decision into UM continue
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: on with Open Winfrey and not being with her nap
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: for the past ten years. Now, you made a decision. Now,
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: it was your decision the first lady, that's what you're saying.
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: And your decision was open That was your decision. No, no, no, no,
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: no no, it wasn't a decision, but it was okay.
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: Both of them had schedules and you know it was
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: it was aug tug a war, right and and UM,
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: I've been there three years. It was. It was just
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: it was. It was come on, come on, I'm gonna
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: stop all this. I'm bragging about you now, Okay, a
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: war between First Lady Rochelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey conceivably
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: the most powerful black woman in the history of politics.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: You have to say her, that's and the most powerful
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: Black lady in the history of entertainment and entrepreneurship. You
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: can't get any better than that. That's a testimony to
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: your skill set. Yes it is, Yes, it is. So.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: It was a long as room to get there. You
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: know what I mean when I you know, I dreamed
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: of being at the White House, you know I really
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: wanted When I saw them, you know, Michelle Obama and
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: Rock literally at the Inaugural ball dancing, I just kept saying,
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: I really want to do her makeup. Now, let's backed
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: that up to when I was working at BT every
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: day at four o'clock, I would literally be sitting in
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: the makeup room doing makeup on the celebrities as it
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: were coming in and always tuning in at po o'clock
- 1:56:45Speaker 1: saying then, back then, I just want to do Oprah
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: one time. I just would love to just do open
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: one time, you know, just so she could see my work.
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: And that was back then in me because I left
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: BT in UM two thousand nine World I show were
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: you working on? Our show? Was you're working on? And
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: I was working on every I was doing all the
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: flagship shows. I did every, I mean video soul. I
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: was doing Caribbean rhythms with Rachel. I was doing Donnie Simpson,
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: Sherry Carter, Rachel, I was doing Angela Stribling. I was
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: doing every all the news shows. I was doing all
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: the flagship shows there. And I literally got there um
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: through the recommendation of Kenya Moore because she was doing
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: hosting a show at that time and wasn't pleased with
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: whoever was doing her makeup and they asked she They
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: asked her, but what can make you happy? She said, um,
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: another makeup arts. They said, well, who do you know someone?
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: She said, well, you got the best here in the
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: city because of course I lived in Washington, d C.
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: And uh, they brought me in. I did her show,
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: the makeup artis that was there. Literally went on vacation
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: from there. They asked me what I stayed on and
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: do the makeup for all those shows that were there
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: on the on the network, and I said yes from
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: bad They asked me if I could stay on, you know,
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: so it just you know, um, And that was right
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: off the skirts of working for Dudley Cosmetology is in
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: charge of putting together all their beauty books for almost
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: five years. Um. And then you know it was I
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: was traveling back and forth going to from DC to
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: North Carolina every week. Um. And after you know, building
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: up there, you know, the building their makeup line and
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: and helping with all the beauty books and everything, they
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: decided that they, you know, it was time for me
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: to like to let me go. And one thing I
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: know for sure is that whenever God feels that you
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: you've got into a place where you start to be stagnant,
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: it's time to move on. You may be scared to
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: do it, so he always has a way of helping
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: you to get to that next level and forcing you out. Um.
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: And that's what got me being home in d C,
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: which got me to being a BT. And then once
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: BT decided to leave d C and go to New York,
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: I had the option of want of going to New
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: you moving to New York and reapplying for my position there,
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: but I love New York for visiting. I'm not a
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: person that really likes New York. For New York is
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: a different beach. It's it's a beast. It's a beast.
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: And I was comfortable here in my home here. And
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: because by that time I had such a big name
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: people that wanted my services, they flew me wherever they
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: needed me to go. So I decided to step out
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: on faith. I decided to At that time, I decided
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: to have my guessip by passed serge because I literally
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: was known as the big guy in the makeup room
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: that could be faced. That's what was my title, that
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: you know, that big guy in the big makeup room
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: that could be faced, the setting that last booth in
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: the back. And at that time I got up to
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: at my heaviest way five and eighty pounds. But it
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: was when I left bt is decided to step out
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: on faith. I said, I can't hide in the makeup
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: room anymore. I've got to do something to further my
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: career and helped my career and pivot me to being
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: more visible. And so I had my gas your bypassed
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: and from that, my I mean from that, I lost
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: three hundred pounds and I literally my confidence level really
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: blew up, and I started being more um, started being
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: more visible, taking by what I did on the road
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: and doing makeup seminars and doing you know, so um,
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: everything I've done for my career to help myself has
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: been something to build me and take me to the
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: next level. Now let's talk about that. So you are
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: a motivational story. You know, Like, there's a couple of
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: things I want to pull back on. When you said
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: you went out on faith, okay, you went out on
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: your resume okay, And you you really did have a plan,
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: because like you said, you decided to lose weight. That
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: was a plan. You have an incredible resume, that was
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: a plan. The faith part was just the inspiration part
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: of it. And I always tell people when they're doing business,
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: keep your faith, have your business plan, have your resume updated,
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: have you buy your accurate then you go out there
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: and then you can go out on faith. Too many
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: people use put too much pressure and too much responsibility
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: on the word faith. And when I hear come out
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: of your mouth and I'm hearing your story and your journey,
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: hard work, consistency, reputation. The thing about I love about
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: your story so far is that you were honest with yourself.
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: You were honest about your physical being because once you
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: lost that weight or that weight was taken off of you,
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: then you physically you could do more, You could walk more.
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: You was not as fatigued. You weren't leaning on, leaning
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: on the chair, leaning on the car, all the things. Right,
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: you know what, um even met by the law my
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: biggest way because well, I decided to have to guess
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: you got past but I didn't. I don't People say
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: I was easy, but it was not the easy way
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: because I took I did everything. I tried so many
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: different diet plans to get to every one. I would
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: lose the weight, and I would once I got off
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: that plan, I gain, I lose again, I lose a game.
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: And what happened was I was pushing myself. I would literally,
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: you know, I would laugh outwardly, but inwardly I was
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: very very unhappy. And um, if it wasn't for the
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: fact that I had such a good heart and was
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: so damn good at what I did, I don't think
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: I would have gotten as far because I didn't find
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: out until I lost the weight that a lot of
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: the celebrities that I worked for, you, Linda Adams cclan
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: and Shaka Khan, Um Seante Moore, Um, and the list
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: goes on and on and on and on. They would
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: always recommend me, Shaka Khan, you know, they would always
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: recommend me. Two different producers and you know, to to
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: and directors that they wanted to make up done by me,
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: magazine editors and a lot of them I found out
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: at you know, later on down the line, UM said
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: that if it wasn't for your artists pushing for you,
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: we would not use you because we were worried that
- 2:03:01Speaker 1: you would not be able to you have a heart
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: attack on set about having a paper to seats on
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: the plane, things like that, and but it was but
- 2:03:09Speaker 1: it was up to me. It had to be up
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: to me to decide enough is enough. And I got
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: tired of walking through the airports and have it to
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: stop in order to um get halfway down, get them,
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: you know, get to my gate. So Um it was
- 2:03:24Speaker 1: you know, it was my my strong determination and my
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: faith that you know pushed me towards doing this. And
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: then also the fact that I have a lot you
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: know that I have I still have to do on
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: this earth, and I needed to further my life in
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: order to tell that story and to help other people
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: because I'm I know, I'm here you know for a purpose,
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: and my purpose is um for love and to help.
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: I'm a good motivator, I'm a good connector. And that's
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: what a lot of people say and my story. It's
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: a first of all, you're a good looking guy, okay,
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: and you have a style about you. Okay. You know,
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: you're like a flawless skin. See a lot of things.
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: You know, I would tell you. So you know, if
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: you go in the kitchen and the guy said you
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: are a great share for the kitchen dirty okay, okay,
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: how good to the kitchen, I'm not gonna use him
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: and I'm not gonna trust this food. So from for
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: for what I'm seeing here, your appresentations outstanding, Okay, thank you.
- 2:04:25Speaker 1: I appreciated. I understand what I'm saying. So I have
- 2:04:28Speaker 1: to be a a I have to be a example
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: of what I'm saying. I can't talk about beautiful skin
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: taking care of yourself. If not, I'm not an example
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: of what I'm talking about. I take very I yes,
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: I do take very could care of my skin. Um
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, I've been doing since COVID
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: took over took place. I literally have been doing a
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: lot of Zoom meetings, um um U tutorials. I've been
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: doing a lot of just talking with people trying to
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: get them to understand and that this, you know, this
- 2:05:01Speaker 1: setback doesn't mean it's you know, it's all over it.
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: This is just just a tompy to reflect and pivot
- 2:05:07Speaker 1: and figure out what it is deep down and you
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: really wanted to do and sit back, think, um pray,
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: get quiet, listen to the voice of God, and then
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: figure out what it is that you really had, these
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: these desires that you want to do and and act
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: upon them, which is what I did because my life,
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: to me, as I tell people, this is the longest
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: I've ever been at home in my entire life. My
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: life for thirty years has always been on the road
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: in other country somewhere around the world, traveling with um
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: an artist, and to be home from March ten um
- 2:05:45Speaker 1: from March timp to now has been. It's been. It
- 2:05:49Speaker 1: has been difficult. But what I did was I decided
- 2:05:52Speaker 1: it's really time to now all these beauty lines, all
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: these um in care lines, all these things that I
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: had this this axis, this desire to do that I
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: had out fifteen years ago that I didn't have the
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: time to do because my schedule was so vigorous. Bring
- 2:06:09Speaker 1: them back up. But instead of doing it, UM bring
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: out an entire line introduced him one at a time
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: because um with now with social media, you can really
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: get out there and showcase yourself and it's not as
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: difficult because I was having to go on the road
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: and carry products from convention hall to convention hall and
- 2:06:28Speaker 1: all those fees flying in my staff, pain, details, air,
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: fear and everything, and by the time you sell your product,
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: you can only really breaking or you know, the profits
- 2:06:41Speaker 1: don't have value to it. Now, let's talk about that
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: because we brought you on the should to talk about
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: something that's an Oprah Worferens favorite things for the holiday gift.
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: That's a derrickvilege perfecting your presence with just the pr
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: P collection that if you're looking at the video that
- 2:06:56Speaker 1: he has some boxes behind these beautiful our last one
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: of the more loring things I find all the eyes
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: of a woman. You know, if you just blocked out
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: the entire fairhead they body and just show that their
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: eyes that eyes tell an amazing story. So for you,
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: for you to come up with with this this plan
- 2:07:16Speaker 1: of action, talk about how it came about. Of course
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: you see it when you're doing makeup. You you're the
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: closest the person will get without kissing and I having
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: a romantic relationship. It's a makeup artist, by the way,
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: because they get that close on you. And so they
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: get that closer, so you get to see the everything
- 2:07:32Speaker 1: on a person's face. Why it works, why I don't work.
- 2:07:35Speaker 1: So talk to us about putting this whole thing together
- 2:07:37Speaker 1: one and then we're gonna talk about when you got
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: the call that you was in the opera box. Well,
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: like I said, um doing covid um. I had to
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: figure out what I was going to do um. And
- 2:07:52Speaker 1: it was at when when people started talking about I've
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: been on different every every Instagram you could think of,
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: you know, talking to you, actually interviewing a lot of
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: celebrities that I literally have been doing makeup for us.
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: I didn't interview Darlene Well, we won't go into the names.
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: It was a lot. And so I say, why people,
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: I'm reading these comments because what I do is in
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: order for me to keep focused. I don't look at
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: the comments, because so I will literally take my glasses
- 2:08:21Speaker 1: off so I don't read anything people saying. And they said,
- 2:08:23Speaker 1: there are you reading the comments? I said, no, I
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: can't see them. They said, well, Derek, everyone's talking about
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: your skin and how beautiful your skin is and how
- 2:08:29Speaker 1: pretty you look on on the thing. What are you doing?
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: So I told them, you know, different things I was
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: doing is so they said, well, I've run out of
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: stuff here, and you know, I've run out of my
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: products and I can't get to the store. So then
- 2:08:41Speaker 1: I was telling people how to shop their pantries and
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: how they can use all kinds of ingredients. They headed
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: home to create masks and moisturizers, and they went from
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: there to or Home of God. Whatever it is that
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: you're going to sell, you know will buy because we
- 2:08:56Speaker 1: obviously see that, you know, you have beautiful skins. So
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: whoever you self as far as skin, will buy it.
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: And so I decided I would come out with something
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: for skin. But then, because we're forced to have to
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: wear masks, I see, my campaign was how do you
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: make an impression? Yes, of course you want to take
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: care of your skin. That's first and foremost, because you're
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: at home. You want to you know, you you're you're
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: You're in situations like now it's getting cold, so it's
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: getting drier, so you want to keep your skin mortualized.
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: But how are you having to wear make an impression
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: when you're having to wear a mask? How do you
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: make an impression when you're having to do these zoom meetings.
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: You have to do all these interviews and you're now
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: holding board meetings on on the computer. Through your eyes.
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: Your eyes tell a story. So I said, well, the
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: first thing I would do is I would come out
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: with a collection of lashes um and it was. It
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: was a long process because first of all, having to
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: get them in, having to look at them, having to
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: figure out because it wasn't just a thing of just
- 2:09:56Speaker 1: picking some lashes. I thought, really hard, all this is
- 2:09:59Speaker 1: happening during co right, all this has happened during COVID.
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: All this happened during COVID. It literally happened doing COVID.
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: And this started happening in May. I started back and
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: May working on it and getting all the product in
- 2:10:11Speaker 1: to look at. And then I had to keep in
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: mind I wanted this to be universal, so I wanted
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: to think about all the ethnicities that I wanted to reach,
- 2:10:19Speaker 1: So I had to think about and look at different
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: ways that women's eyelashes grow according to their ethnicity. Um.
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: And so then I chose and then I wanted them.
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: You know a lot of lashes, UH have hair on
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: one band. But what I wanted was I wanted them
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: to be more three D and four D, five D
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: and two D dimensional so because so that they would
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: look just like they were literally coming out of someone's eyes,
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: which meant that it was a thicker band, which was
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: which was a cotton band. And I wanted them to
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: last because I don't want someone to spend their money
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: on a product that will not last. So once that
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: was done, then they think of naming the product. Once
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: I named everything, um um, I bought a you know
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: safely for an other makeup artists that I'm I'm very
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: familiar with that names in the industry. And I chose
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: my twenty five that I wanted, and but I and
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: I broke. I started two hundred, broke it down to fifty.
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: I chose my twenty five and I had each one
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: of them choose their favorites and looked on the back
- 2:11:27Speaker 1: to see which ones they had chosen, and it was
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: if it was the one I chose. And basically all
- 2:11:32Speaker 1: of them picked just about the exact same ones that
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: I chose, and the ones that I had question about
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: that I really wanted, but I was if I could
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: add more to the collection. Um. And then they chose
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: told me why they liked them, and then why I
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: liked it. Then when I talked with my manager, he said, okay,
- 2:11:52Speaker 1: let's add another three piers. So the collection was twenty
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: eight payer um. And then I also did I did
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: not forget the generations. I would um the baby baby
- 2:12:01Speaker 1: boomers all the way to generation ze, those big long
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: last that you see a lot of the young girls
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: wearing that are and some of the um, some of
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: those women that like a little boldness and as well,
- 2:12:14Speaker 1: long long so and I wondered that you wanted the
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: culpers behind that. NAWG, I was going, what is less
- 2:12:23Speaker 1: coming from? So that's awesome, that's awesome. Yeah, So I saw,
- 2:12:26Speaker 1: I went, I had three you know, I saw. Then
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: I broken into categories, the the shiros, which are the long,
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: luxurious ones, the lush, and the predaporte. And then once
- 2:12:36Speaker 1: I did that, I sent them to Oprah, and what
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: I did was to make it easier. I chose six
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: pair out of the bunch, three per day, three for evening,
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: told her to pick her favorite, you know, out of
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: the three per day. Out of the three to take
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: it from day to evening, pick your pick one from
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: each category, and she did. Once she did, I had
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: my team to work on a beautifu a kid. When
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: choosing on when I was thinking about what I wanted
- 2:13:03Speaker 1: kids to look like, I wanted to be something pretty elegant,
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: luxurious because that's the image that I UM portrayed. So
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: once they came back with it um and I wanted
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: to also make it easy, so that's where the adhesive
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: came in. That's where the applicator came in. And then
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: after I did that, I said the kid to Old
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: Magazine for consideration for favorite things. And the next thing
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: I know is I mean, it was a couple of
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: weeks later I heard back from them and they said,
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: You've been chosen his favorite things. And of course I
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: had my little minor breakdown because it was this was
- 2:13:40Speaker 1: a long process to get to this point because this
- 2:13:43Speaker 1: was all being done during COVID. Even my photo shoot
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: the girl that I that's the brand for the high lashes.
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: She literally was seven months pregnant. Her fiance was the
- 2:13:55Speaker 1: photographer who was a big, big time photographer, and I've
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: used her previe on another campaign and I loved her
- 2:14:03Speaker 1: look so much and she was so beautiful. I wanted
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: to use her again. Little did I know that her
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: fiance was a big time photographer and during COVID, you know,
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: she like said she was pregnant, and when we shot
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: the campaign back in July, she was seven months pregnant then.
- 2:14:20Speaker 1: And then I couldn't It was also a good time
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: when you really couldn't travel anywhere. So what I had
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: to do was literally, um, figure out what how is
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: am I gonna be able to do make up? What
- 2:14:30Speaker 1: I did was I shot here at my home using
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: my god daughter as a model for just to show
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: you up close with the what the last year would
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: look like. But I needed to get that my girl,
- 2:14:41Speaker 1: you know, my model shot in l A because that's
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: where the polo she was taking out taking place. Literally,
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: my beauty god daughter that took one of my classes
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: that I used for a lot of events. Um in
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: l A or wherever she is, she just happened to
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: be in l A during that time because she was
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: the going there for a movie and just when she
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: got being a ride, the movie get shut down because
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: of COVID, but she was still. I reached out to
- 2:15:07Speaker 1: her and said, Brianna, can you please do this shoot?
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: She went and got tested. Um, the photographer and his
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: fiancee got tested. She did the shoot and of course
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: I'm one of those people that he likes to do.
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: I'm when I get on sets to do a photo shoot,
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: I am very anal, I'm very demanding because it's a
- 2:15:28Speaker 1: it has to be, it has to I did yes,
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: and so Um I literally was on zoom calls trying
- 2:15:37Speaker 1: to tell okay, I want you to do this. You
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: know now, I want the eyebrow to look a bit
- 2:15:42Speaker 1: like this, and okay, if I was you know, I
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: said I had to step back and said, you know,
- 2:15:46Speaker 1: with there need to trust her. She's she's she's taking
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: some classes from you, and also she is a very
- 2:15:53Speaker 1: good makeup artist on her own right, by her own right.
- 2:15:57Speaker 1: So let me go on and trust her that she's
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: going to give me the Derek, which is the company,
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: the draft signature, and from there trusted and then with
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: my behind the scenes person with with Brian, which was
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: Ken Brihanna which was the makeup artist, Shelby who was
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: a model, and her fiance Brandon. I got some wonderful,
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: wonderful country. Yeah. You trust with people, you trust with
- 2:16:27Speaker 1: people you know, trust people are It was definitely a
- 2:16:31Speaker 1: trust back because I want those people that likes to
- 2:16:33Speaker 1: do things myself. That's true, that's true. But you can
- 2:16:36Speaker 1: accomplish it, but you can't. You can't. You can't build
- 2:16:39Speaker 1: an empire for trust. Absolutely absolutely, And that's why I
- 2:16:44Speaker 1: love about your story is that and that's why I
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: allowed you to tell it. Because as you started telling
- 2:16:49Speaker 1: your story, more and more people start coming into your conversation.
- 2:16:52Speaker 1: I started with this idea and may then all of
- 2:16:55Speaker 1: a sudden that you were going through people getting on
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: the phone, collaborating other but depending on people trusting. And
- 2:17:02Speaker 1: when you start trusting people, then they brought on other
- 2:17:04Speaker 1: people of higher quality that you didn't know. You know,
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: you didn't sit and so that your story is very
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: motivational to me, and that's why I wanted to bring
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: in the fight. The fact you have talent and you're
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: so casual, you said, I said, Oprah. Some of the
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: eyelashes so she can pick out. He said that, so casual,
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: you know, because your career, because you are talented, dude,
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: you have the right to be. You have the right
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: to talk the way you talk. You have the right
- 2:17:36Speaker 1: to be as casual the way because guess what I'm
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: not in You're not at all of your success it's
- 2:17:42Speaker 1: tied to hard work. You have these relationships. I know
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: she one of my best friends. Okay, your Landa, you
- 2:17:50Speaker 1: know you know your land I call you Landa, my
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: sistem hearing of nown just thinking about that because I
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: love you. Adams. He been a like a big sister

- 2:18:05Speaker 1: love Yolland Adam Blonde is a you know that's my sister.

- 2:19:28Speaker 1: forgot that, you know, because I managed Steve Harvard for
- 2:19:31Speaker 1: sixteen years, so we bought the Yeah, absolutely so. Jim
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: at a hotel motivating me in the gym at the
- 2:19:39Speaker 1: hotel on the on the elystical. Absolutely so. I we've
- 2:19:43Speaker 1: bought played, we we we've connected to several times and
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: wn't util this interview room. I said, I know, I know,
- 2:19:48Speaker 1: my man. We bumped hands a cup in a positive way.
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: Now when you when you when what has been the
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: reaction when you get part of the holiday gift collection?
- 2:19:57Speaker 1: Or will you just the first of all you bowled over?
- 2:20:00Speaker 1: But being able to launch your brand that we talk
- 2:20:02Speaker 1: to us about that? Well, Um, the good thing about
- 2:20:08Speaker 1: all of this is that I've been hearing people there.
- 2:20:10Speaker 1: If we've been you've been in the background for so long.
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: You always you you always have been so humble about
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: making sure that whoever you work with always you make
- 2:20:21Speaker 1: sure they're in the in the forefront. You always. I mean,
- 2:20:24Speaker 1: for instance, I'll use this as an example. I walked
- 2:20:28Speaker 1: with with a celebrity I can't go into name, but
- 2:20:31Speaker 1: I'll be out of celebrity. And then another celebrity came ups.
- 2:20:34Speaker 1: Oh my god, do you know who this is talking to?
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: The celebrity den has done this and he's not list
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: and he's not list and this, and so I'm standing
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: like about three or four feet behind it. I'm going
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: like that because the whole and then once and they
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: once they saw me do that, then they shut up.
- 2:20:53Speaker 1: So I went to them later I said, you know what,
- 2:20:55Speaker 1: I whenever I'm with a celebrity, they're the one that
- 2:20:59Speaker 1: need They all the star. It's not me. It's always them.
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: It's all about them. Now when i'm you know, when
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: I go to an event and it's all up and
- 2:21:09Speaker 1: I'm by myself or it's all about me, But I
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: always make sure that whoever I'm with, whatever celebrity i'm with,
- 2:21:17Speaker 1: and even it doesn't even have to be a celebrity,
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: it's whoever i'm working with that that's at that time.
- 2:21:23Speaker 1: It could be a bride, it could be a model,
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: it can be anybody day of The focus is not me.
- 2:21:29Speaker 1: So everyone kept saying, Derek, you have been in the
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: background for so long, pushing so many other people. Let
- 2:21:38Speaker 1: us get behind you and push you because it's time you.
- 2:21:42Speaker 1: You've been doing this for a long time. Like I said,
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: it's been thirty years I've been doing makeup. Thank God,
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: I've taken good care of myself that I don't look
- 2:21:50Speaker 1: like I've been doing makeup for thirty years looking fantastic.
- 2:21:53Speaker 1: My friend appreciate that. Yeah, this year I turned fifty nine. Fantastic.
- 2:21:59Speaker 1: Help I gotta get personal. We gonna wrap up this car,
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: but I need a little help on my face. OK,
- 2:22:03Speaker 1: no problem, no problems. Yeah, because I'm struggling with the
- 2:22:08Speaker 1: bags under my eyes today. Okay, Well, we were working
- 2:22:11Speaker 1: on something like that that I'm working on. I'm testing it,
- 2:22:14Speaker 1: and i'm testing it. So if that that's one of
- 2:22:16Speaker 1: the things I get from a lot of people, that
- 2:22:18Speaker 1: and and something and whatever. The sermons I used on
- 2:22:21Speaker 1: my face, which I came out fifteen years ago, I'm
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: coming out with that as well. But when did that
- 2:22:27Speaker 1: coming out? When did that coming out? Coming out? The
- 2:22:30Speaker 1: bags on the eyes? When at that coming out? When
- 2:22:34Speaker 1: you're talking about stuff like that, you have to do
- 2:22:35Speaker 1: tests because you don't want to put out something that
- 2:22:38Speaker 1: you get people saying that you messed up their skin
- 2:22:40Speaker 1: or you know. So when you're doing stuff like that,
- 2:22:42Speaker 1: you have to get all kinds of tests done, and
- 2:22:45Speaker 1: you gotta make sure that you have doctors that actually
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: and you know. So I don't want to rush that,
- 2:22:51Speaker 1: but I've been working on that. I was working on
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: that before COVID because that was because I get that
- 2:22:56Speaker 1: problem with a lot of clients I work with. So
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: I've been working on something like like that up for
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: a while. But before that comes out, I'm gonna come
- 2:23:03Speaker 1: up with the skin oil because this serum that I've
- 2:23:05Speaker 1: been using, like I said, I came up with it
- 2:23:07Speaker 1: fifteen years ago and I've been been using it continuously
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: since then. So I've been you know, that's why my
- 2:23:14Speaker 1: skin radiates the way it does because of that. But
- 2:23:17Speaker 1: right now we're pushing lashes. We're pushing your presidents lashes
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: right now, and we want to literally And not only that,
- 2:23:26Speaker 1: but the other pair of the collection is also available
- 2:23:30Speaker 1: on the website Perfecting Your Presence. So besides signating, besides
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: the kit we have here, UM, I also have the
- 2:23:38Speaker 1: other pair in the collection of our Lives liner. It
- 2:23:44Speaker 1: isn't well, no, it's not in my scare. It's um
- 2:23:48Speaker 1: it's just the lashes and adhesive and the applicator. Okay, excuse.
- 2:23:53Speaker 1: But also because what I was getting was request from
- 2:23:57Speaker 1: women to know, Okay, if I'm gonna get them, how
- 2:23:59Speaker 1: do I apply them? So I actually did a step
- 2:24:01Speaker 1: by step tutorial on the website as well demonstrating how
- 2:24:06Speaker 1: easy it is to apply the lashes. And I'll be
- 2:24:08Speaker 1: getting a lot of calls from a lot of women
- 2:24:11Speaker 1: tell me that they actually were putting the lashes on
- 2:24:13Speaker 1: the found that they were doing it wrong. And also
- 2:24:16Speaker 1: the fact that they um learned a lot from the tutorial.
- 2:24:19Speaker 1: So that's good. I mean, last night um Ll Bryant
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: was was showcasing how she was wearing the lashes while
- 2:24:27Speaker 1: she was doing her uh Housewives of Potomac thing last night,
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: you know, her thing with that. So a lot of
- 2:24:34Speaker 1: the celebrities are now reaching out and and helping with
- 2:24:38Speaker 1: pushing me. And then I got women that are getting
- 2:24:41Speaker 1: the kids and and also the lashes from the collection
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: and actually doing tutorials or or tagging themselves in the
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: lashes and sending them to me. And so what I'm
- 2:24:51Speaker 1: doing is on the website and on the Instagram site
- 2:24:54Speaker 1: Perfecting your Presence, I'm showcasing these women because p y
- 2:24:59Speaker 1: P Perfecting Your pre is a community. It was an
- 2:25:01Speaker 1: actual platform that took on the road and coach women
- 2:25:06Speaker 1: on how to uplift their their with the way they look.
- 2:25:10Speaker 1: With helping with their hair, there will be their clothes,
- 2:25:15Speaker 1: their look by bringing experts in each of those fields
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: and talking to them about them. And now, because of
- 2:25:21Speaker 1: what's going on, I made it a virtual platform where
- 2:25:24Speaker 1: women can all ask me questions. I can interview people,
- 2:25:28Speaker 1: and I can help women on how to help themselves
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: through this platform. But I did not forget the men
- 2:25:34Speaker 1: because a lot of men are struggling with this same problem.
- 2:25:37Speaker 1: So I've also um and gonna be showing men on
- 2:25:41Speaker 1: how to groom their beers after a color their beers
- 2:25:44Speaker 1: because a lot of them say, well, you know, you
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: know they want to color them, but they want to
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: do it, and they want to be able to do it,
- 2:25:53Speaker 1: and they want to be able to still keep a
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: little bit of the gray in there, but it's doing
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: you look realistic. And then also how you know we're
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: gonna be friends for a long time, Derek. I'm just
- 2:26:05Speaker 1: so you know, just just call on me, let me
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: know when it is you want to be a guinea pig,
- 2:26:10Speaker 1: and after we will literally go through and I was
- 2:26:12Speaker 1: demonstrate using you as a model where you are on
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: how you can go about trimming your beer. That's a
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: matter of fact, I clean mind up today to make
- 2:26:21Speaker 1: sure I look good. You know, you got by five
- 2:26:24Speaker 1: these compliments from me, so you know you're looking good.
- 2:26:26Speaker 1: He's known as the makeup Maestro Celebrity Makeup is the

- 2:26:36Speaker 1: the Adam Shaker, conn and Moore. Here's a the Derek
- 2:26:39Speaker 1: Brother p y p is not Favorite Things Holiday gift

- 2:26:51Speaker 1: on the show. Thank you so much for having me here.
- 2:26:54Speaker 1: And you don't understand how how happy I was here
- 2:26:57Speaker 1: to be a part of your collection of celebrities that
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: you work with, and then and to be it amongst
- 2:27:06Speaker 1: all those people already touched merepreneur. But I just want
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: to let you know that you know, you're just a
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: gifted guy, and you're such a humble guy. Sometimes when
- 2:27:15Speaker 1: I when I invite guests like you on the show,
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: I gotta let you know you're here because you're hard work.
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: You're here because your resume tells you you belong to
- 2:27:23Speaker 1: be here. You've blown here, and so keep keep that
- 2:27:26Speaker 1: home on this because I've learned to be humble sometimes
- 2:27:29Speaker 1: jumping out there trying to get in front of the line.
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: Ain't the line you want to be in and not?
- 2:27:33Speaker 1: And I learned I had a mother that that took
- 2:27:35Speaker 1: me and my family. My mother and father make sure
- 2:27:38Speaker 1: we're in church every weekend. The one thing I learned
- 2:27:41Speaker 1: is you you let your good work speak for your themselves.
- 2:27:44Speaker 1: You you have let other people speak of your good work.
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: So I don't tell people how good I am and
- 2:27:50Speaker 1: what I can do. I let what I do show
- 2:27:52Speaker 1: what I can do, and other people tell other people
- 2:27:55Speaker 1: about me. And that's how I've gotten You know, have
- 2:27:58Speaker 1: gone so parties, the energy, that's that's what you got
- 2:28:01Speaker 1: on my show. You know what I'm saying. I knew
- 2:28:02Speaker 1: about you. Then they brought up in our meet I
- 2:28:04Speaker 1: telling me, they said, what about Derek Rugley. I say,
- 2:28:07Speaker 1: that's my man. Uh, you learned out because you're like else.
