- 0:00Alan Carroll: Welcome, fellow travelers down the mindfulness
- 0:05path. Today, we have a great opportunity to interview and
- 0:12speak with a Grammy nominated opera singer who is on stage in
- 0:21front of large audiences, and all the things that go together
- 0:27to be successful in that arena. Especially accessing to a
- 0:34mindful sense of consciousness. And she has the ability to allow
- 0:44people to get in touch with that mindful quality within. And so
- 0:49when they project out the sounds that they sing, the sounds come
- 0:54from a deeper level of consciousness and mindfulness.
- 0:59And therefore the quality of the formulation of the note is just
- 1:07wonderful. So it's with a joy in my heart to welcome Monique
- 1:14McDonald to the mindful you podcast. Well, welcome to the
- 1:19mindful mindful you podcast money.
- 1:22Monique McDonald: Thank you very much.
- 1:23Alan Carroll: I am, I am in prime impressed with singing.
- 1:27And I read a little bit about your singing and your singing
- 1:31career, just the ability to sing. And then the ability to
- 1:35want to be heard, which means voting up and down is already a
- 1:40breakthrough in confidence. And I also noticed that you, you
- 1:45talk you talk about, well, where do you sing? Well, you sing on a
- 1:49stage, don't you? Oh, yes, I do. And, and I would imagine that
- 1:54leads into stage presence. And that's, that's a very important
- 1:59concept, because a lot of my listeners are professional
- 2:04speakers who want to get better at the game of professional
- 2:08speaking. And so having someone like yourself, who is a
- 2:13professional speaker on stage singing is act like one step
- 2:16above professional speaker. And so that's like, I can't wait to,
- 2:20to to have you share some of your wisdom, of experiences and
- 2:25stories, and mindfulness and presence and, and to be to be in
- 2:31the moment in front of the audience. And how do you get in
- 2:33the moment in front of audiences. So that would be the
- 2:36ballpark of my first question, and you can enter into it any
- 2:40way you want to?
- 2:41Monique McDonald: Well, I'm super excited to be here,
- 2:44because awareness is one of the most important first steps to
- 2:53being on any stage, whether you're singing or speaking, I
- 2:57find that speakers in particular, and singers as well,
- 3:04don't spend enough time priming their energy to be seen and
- 3:09heard. So they just walk out into onto the stage or in our
- 3:14case, for example, on with a microphone and just start
- 3:17talking. And they haven't prepared so that they're not
- 3:24coming from their most powerful or most centered place within
- 3:29one of the reasons why I call myself the magnetic voice
- 3:33mentor, is because I help speakers and singers learn how
- 3:38to tap in to that presence and passion within and the line
- 3:46their voice to it. So that that energy is unleashed into the
- 3:53room. Before you even say a word you have prepared by one of my
- 4:00little tricks is I send love into the room before I even get
- 4:04there. I imagine all of the faces of the people that are
- 4:08going to be receiving my message or my song so that I'm already
- 4:15connected both within and without, before I walk into the
- 4:20room.
- 4:22Alan Carroll: Oh, boy, oh boy, aren't they sweet words? That's
- 4:26very, very nice. Very, very, very nice. To be to visualize
- 4:31the love going into the room, the the being present and aware
- 4:39is very mindful. And I know from my experiences that that often
- 4:47people don't realize and you you can you you're the you're the
- 4:52professional here that that when you speak it's a form of singing
- 4:59and And when you sing, it's singing. And in there is a space
- 5:07between the sounds, and are the notes that I believe is that
- 5:15that sorts of power that allows you to become present and
- 5:20energized, the note that follows the empty space, which accesses
- 5:25mindfulness and that infinite space of I'll call it
- 5:28consciousness? Are we? Are we on the same page here?
- 5:31Monique McDonald: Alan, I couldn't have said it better
- 5:33myself. That's exactly right. And, and in my studio, we were
- 5:40taught that singing is just elongated speech. So what we're,
- 5:49what we're literally doing is connecting to that source of all
- 5:55there is that every one of us, you bet, and literally tuning
- 6:03ourselves to that power or energy. So that what ever we say
- 6:10is imbued with that. So we don't have to worry so much about what
- 6:17we're saying. Because when you're tuned in like that, you
- 6:23can make mistakes, forget your place, you can be as powerful as
- 6:29you can be, you can be your most authentic self. And it is more
- 6:36than enough. Because you are connected to everyone within the
- 6:42sound of your voice.
- 6:45Alan Carroll: All right. It's, you touch a space, then you're
- 6:51speaking, which touches a space in me. That space of, of
- 6:59emptiness, of ego free judgment free zone. Yes. And, and that's
- 7:09the definition of mindfulness. Mindfulness is to be able to be
- 7:1324/7 and a judgment free zone. And so there's no thoughts
- 7:20there. There's no judgments there is just pure forgiveness.
- 7:26And, and I hear you talk about forgiveness. And letting go is a
- 7:31is a deep mindfulness journey. Because that's that's to to to
- 7:38relinquish the grip, somehow that ego has on your actions, is
- 7:45a tremendous source of freedom. And Lily Allen,
- 7:49Monique McDonald: and that particular grip translates into
- 7:53the body and the breath, so that your voice literally becomes
- 7:58blocked. It's almost like you're driving your car with the brake
- 8:01on.
- 8:03Alan Carroll: One analogy, that's great,
- 8:06Monique McDonald: right? It doesn't flow. And we all know
- 8:10people that speak that way. And we don't, the thing is, we're
- 8:15not trained, our ears aren't trained to understand what's
- 8:19going on, physically, it within the voice itself, but our bodies
- 8:25understand the energy and feel the block. So we don't know why.
- 8:31But some people we aligned to immediately and some people,
- 8:37there's a little bit of distance that's necessary. And that's
- 8:42what I help speakers do. I help Pete speakers, release that
- 8:47grip, reclaim those moments where they gave up their voice.
- 8:57And trauma happened, or because trauma happened, they gave up
- 9:03their voice, and they're always remnants of emotional and mental
- 9:08debris left over, no matter how much work we do on it. And I'm
- 9:13one of 12 coaches that practice this particular healing
- 9:18modality, of reclaiming your voice in those moments. It's a
- 9:24very powerful thing. And it's, it's, it's I'm so grateful that
- 9:28I get to do it. And what I call it is I helped clear the
- 9:32instrument so that it can flow in the way that we were talking
- 9:36about because true connection can only happen if we're
- 9:46breathing in our bodies fully present fully present.
- 9:55Alan Carroll: The the term that I like from the boot This
- 10:00tradition is if you follow your thoughts, it's a disembodied.
- 10:05And if you tune into your body, it's embodied. And so the dance
- 10:11is between the creation of the sound, which is a disembodied,
- 10:16and then the creation of the embodied experience requires you
- 10:19to be able to one foot here, one foot there, boom, boom, though,
- 10:25when you when you listen to lovely, sweetheart, come on
- 10:30baby. I love to sing, I loved I loved I sing all the time, I
- 10:39just, and I make up the words, excuse me. I love it, I make up
- 10:46the words because I don't know the words, but I just, I just
- 10:49start just to sing. And part of the of the speaking is the
- 10:54creation of the silence that allows you to think about the
- 10:58next note. So the note comes from a thought that you have
- 11:01about the what's the quality of this of the thought form.
- 11:08Absolutely, I want to create right here and this.
- 11:12Monique McDonald: Absolutely. And the voice works. In waves.
- 11:16Sound works in waves. So there's the flow, the ebb and flow, the
- 11:23time when the the voice is making sound and the silence.
- 11:28It's as our breath, we inhale, inspiration, the divine
- 11:35connection, and we exhale, my voice teacher used to tell me
- 11:43when God is in charge, we are in charge of the inhale. And God is
- 11:50in charge of the exhale. And what that meant to me was, we
- 11:54prepare through our inhalation for what we are about to say.
- 12:00But the actual saying of it, we must release and trust that it
- 12:06will go out into the world as it's meant to be because we are
- 12:11truly connected and aware.
- 12:16Alan Carroll: So many things, Say that one again, the inhale
- 12:20and the exhale, one.
- 12:22Monique McDonald: We are in charge of the inhale. And God is
- 12:27in charge of the exhale. So we inhale, what it is that we want
- 12:35to be. And we release the exhale, trusting that God is at
- 12:41work within whatever we're saying, or speaking. God, the
- 12:46source of all there is whatever word you'd like to put there
- 12:51that you're comfortable with. But what I know is, there is an
- 12:56invisible force that breathes us that beats are heart that
- 13:01connects us all. And our voice and our breath that supports our
- 13:08voice is the most ancient way to connect to that force.
- 13:27Alan Carroll: It's beautiful, um, it's like it is like you're
- 13:30singing a song and I'm listening to the song and letting it
- 13:33vibrate in my body. Another word has come up a few times. Last
- 13:39year, we're talking as the word harmony. And when you watch
- 13:45someone speak, or someone's saying, Is it Is there a
- 13:50fluidity or a harmony of flowing into that that ebb and the flow
- 13:56the ebb and the flow? Is the ebb long enough for the flow that
- 13:59just happened is the RS the flow too long for the ebb and as you
- 14:03become more present you how long you hold the sound? And how long
- 14:09you hold the silence becomes natural and and then then you
- 14:14have a balance or harmony? Does that make sense?
- 14:17Monique McDonald: I love the way you've put it Alan, it's a it's
- 14:21a really beautiful thing. In in, in our voice class and I and I
- 14:27do with speakers as well when we're working in person where I
- 14:32have them say the same words into each other's mouths.
- 14:35Obviously when COVID happened that stopped but there are when
- 14:40you're singing to sing the same notes. What what happens is
- 14:45without realizing it, and with very little effort, we tune
- 14:51ourselves to the other because It is a natural desire, it is a
- 15:03natural desire to unite a natural desire to be in harmony
- 15:17with each other. Because of many things about the way the world
- 15:26is right now, most people are using their voice to disturb
- 15:31that harmony, to break it up to interrupt it, because their
- 15:38intention is to control. But natural power that comes from
- 15:44the source within, that affects each and every one of our
- 15:48voices. And each and every one of our souls doesn't need to
- 15:55control it just is. And when I help see a singers and speakers
- 16:03connect and speak from that place, they they are always the
- 16:11favorite speaker, wherever they go. And I am on a mission, Alan
- 16:17to M power 10,000 voices. For that, yes, because we are living
- 16:29in a time where the world needs authentic, connected voices,
- 16:37speaking the truth, more than ever, creating that harmony,
- 16:44vibrating the world with their voice. I have a gift for your
- 16:53listeners with that wonderful
- 16:55Alan Carroll: gift. And also, how can my listeners connect
- 16:58with you?
- 17:00Monique McDonald: Well, they can go to the magnetic voice.com.
- 17:05And they can sign up for a discover your magnetic voice
- 17:10session. And we can have a chat. And or they can go to this link
- 17:18that I'm putting in the chat right now.
- 17:21Alan Carroll: And we'll also include all this in the show
- 17:23notes money.
- 17:24Monique McDonald: That's right. The magnetic voice.com/v O P,
- 17:32which stands for voice of power. And this is one of my favorite
- 17:35things that I get to do. i It's a live assessment, I'm going to
- 17:39meet you and we're going to talk about your voice. And what is
- 17:44your voice of power? What does that sound like? And how do you
- 17:49you want to align your voice of power with your blessing good
- 17:56message to the world that is only yours. The Native Americans
- 18:02believe that we each one of us have medicine for the world. And
- 18:11I believe that medicine flows through our voice into the
- 18:17hearts of humanity. So please remember, your voice matters.
- 18:30And what would you say, if you truly understood that your voice
- 18:38can vibrate the world
- 18:50Alan Carroll: it's just so sweet. The sweet things that you
- 18:52say it's being a cheerleader for more for God. And I'm a believer
- 19:01and a follower of the Course of Miracles and is full of stories
- 19:05and one of the sayings is, God cannot do for you what God
- 19:10cannot do through you. And so when you speak you're speaking
- 19:14for God and you speak for yourself you're speaking for
- 19:17God, you speak for the being energy that that that space of
- 19:20the of the infinite and full of compassion, grace and
- 19:24forgiveness. Whereas the ego speak for attacking and if you
- 19:28can catch that too, and go in that direction of the harmony
- 19:32for God is like wonderful and you speak for you. You speak for
- 19:38a greater vision and you have the gift of articulation and
- 19:45you're able to articulate the the infinite in a way that's
- 19:48very, very sweet. And I really it's a pleasure talking to you
- 19:52and I'll be signing up for that that session with you.
- 19:55Monique McDonald: Fantastic. Really beautiful so much Alan
- 19:59for having me. On your show, I feel so grateful and blessed
- 20:05that I get to help singers and speakers speak from that divine
- 20:13place, so that their message is always heard. Thank you for your
- 20:20time. Thank you for your voice, Alan, for reminding us how
- 20:27important awareness is.
- 20:34Alan Carroll: Thank you. Thank you very much. It's been a it's
- 20:37been a blessing to be with you. Thank you. Good luck on your
- 20:42talk. I'll be watching. You're talking about five or 10
- 20:44minutes. All right, thanks a million. All right. Bye Bye,
- 20:49buddy. Bye
