- [Prompt] custom: Were you ever at the type of party where it was full to the brim with high achievers and you were ju | Hosts: corn, herman [Response] Corn: You're at a rooftop thing — someone's apartment, big windows, everyone's holding a glass of something orange and pretending to know what it is. The guy next to you just said he's a founding partner at a growth equity firm, and he said it with exactly the amount of eye contact that makes you feel like a quarterly target. Now he's looking at you. The question's hanging there. What do you do for a living? And you have about one-point-three seconds to decide — are you playing this game, or are you torching the board? Herman: I love this question. I love everything about it. Corn: Daniel sent us this one, and it's basically a tactical field manual for weaponizing social awkwardness. He wants to know — when you're at one of those parties full of high achievers, or meeting a partner's parents for the first time, or anywhere the social script demands you perform ambition — what are the best lines and moves for doing the exact opposite? How do you make yourself seem as unmotivated, unambitious, and unimpressive as possible, on purpose, and actually enjoy the aftermath? Herman: I have to say, the framing here is beautiful. Daniel's not asking how to dodge the question politely. He's asking how to land something truly jarring and then just... Observe the reaction. It's performance art. Corn: And I think the core insight here — the thing that makes this more than just a bit — is that the most liberating move in a status-obsessed room isn't to compete harder. It's to signal zero ambition and watch the whole machinery grind to a halt in front of you. Herman: You opt out of the auction entirely. And the room doesn't know what to do with that. Corn: That's what we're digging into today. The psychology of why this works, the mechanics of crafting a genuinely boring persona, some real field reports from people who've tried it, and — importantly — where the ethical line is between playful social trolling and just being a jerk. Herman: Because there is a line. And we should probably figure out where it is before someone tries this at their boss's dinner party and blames us. Corn: Although if they do try it at their boss's dinner party, I want to hear that story. Herman: Send us the field reports. Herman: Let's define the ecosystem first, because this isn't just any party. The high-achiever gathering is its own biome. Job titles are the currency, and the conversational script is rigidly transactional — you tell me your status marker, I tell you mine, we silently calibrate who ranks where, and then we decide whether this conversation is worth continuing. Corn: It's a silent auction where the bidding never stops and nobody actually wins anything. Herman: And the anxiety this produces is well-documented. LinkedIn ran a survey — found that sixty-seven percent of professionals feel genuine dread when someone asks "What do you do?" at a social event. That's two-thirds of people in a room, all performing confidence while internally panicking. Corn: Which makes the whole thing absurd. Everyone's uncomfortable, everyone knows everyone's uncomfortable, and yet the ritual continues because nobody wants to be the one who breaks it. Herman: And the default advice is always "reframe your answer to sound more impressive" or "practice your elevator pitch." Basically, get better at playing the game. What Daniel's asking us to explore is the opposite move entirely — what if you deliberately signal "less than" as a form of social jiu-jitsu? Corn: Using the other person's momentum against them. Herman: That's the idea. You're not dodging the question, you're not being rude — you're answering it in a way that's technically true but so aggressively mundane that it short-circuits the status-calibration machinery. The other person has no script for "this person seems fine being unimpressive. Corn: That's where the fun starts, because their discomfort becomes the entertainment. Herman: There's actually a framework for this in humor research — benign violation theory. The idea is that something becomes funny when it violates a social norm but is simultaneously perceived as harmless. You've broken the script, but you haven't attacked anyone. You've just... Corn: The episode arc, then — we're going to trace the psychology of why status signaling works the way it does, then get into the actual mechanics of crafting a boring persona that lands, some real field reports from people who've tried this in the wild, and finally where the line is between playful trolling and misleading someone. Herman: Because if you're meeting your partner's parents and you tell them you're "between things" with a shrug, that's a bit. If you tell them you're a neurosurgeon and you're not, that's a problem. Corn: Although if you tell them you're a neurosurgeon and you're not, that's not social trolling — that's just a lie with extra steps and a potential lawsuit. Herman: Let's get into the psychology, because the "What do you do?" question isn't just small talk. It's a dominance ritual dressed up as curiosity. And it triggers something very specific in the brain — social comparison theory, which goes back to Leon Festinger in the nineteen-fifties. We instantly, involuntarily, rank ourselves against whoever we're talking to. Corn: Which is why the question lands like a pop quiz you didn't study for. Herman: And the research backs this up. A twenty-twenty-two study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found something fascinating — people who self-deprecate in professional settings are rated as more trustworthy, but less competent. So when you deliberately undersell yourself, you're trading status points for something else. Or in this case, the sheer entertainment of watching someone not know what to do with you. Corn: The mechanism here — you're exploiting a gap in the social script. Everyone expects you to either match their energy or defer to it. When you do neither, when you just... flatline, the other person's status-calibration software crashes. Herman: That's where the benign violation comes in. You've broken the norm — you're supposed to perform ambition — but you haven't attacked anyone. You've just refused to play. It's the conversational equivalent of showing up to a black-tie gala in a very clean, very intentional gray sweatsuit. Corn: Which is somehow more unsettling than showing up in something actually offensive. The gray sweatsuit says "I know the rules, I just don't care. Herman: So let's get tactical. How do you actually do this? There are three components to a successful boring persona. First, you choose a job description that is technically true but maximally mundane. The key word is "technically" — it has to be defensible if someone digs. Second, you deliver it with flat affect. No apologetic tone, no self-deprecating laugh, no signaling that you're in on a joke. Third — and this is the hardest part — you refuse to elaborate. Corn: The refusal to elaborate is where the power lives. Most people, when they give a boring answer, immediately follow it up with "...but I'm actually working on this thing" or "...it's more interesting than it sounds." That's the tell. That's you asking for permission to be interesting again. Don't do it. Herman: Let's run some examples. You're at a tech networking event, someone asks what you do. You say, "I update spreadsheets for a regional logistics coordinator.Eye contact maintained. Sip your drink. Corn: "I'm a compliance auditor for a mid-tier insurance broker." That one's beautiful because it contains three words — compliance, mid-tier, insurance — that each individually drain energy from a room. Combined, they're a sedative. Herman: The delivery matters enormously. If you say it with a little smirk, you've ruined it. Now it's a joke you're both in on, and they'll just laugh and ask what you really do. The flat delivery is what creates the ambiguity. Are you serious? Are you messing with them? They can't tell, and they can't exactly ask. Corn: There's a Reddit story about this that I think is instructive. Someone went to a tech networking event — the kind where everyone's a "growth hacker" or a "full-stack visionary" — and when asked what they did, they just said "I work in data entry." The conversation died in under four seconds. They spent the rest of the night eating free shrimp in peace. Nobody approached them again. Herman: Which is a feature, not a bug. The goal isn't to make friends — it's to reclaim your evening from the status auction. Corn: Now, the parent-meeting special is a different beast. Different stakes, different audience. Here the goal isn't necessarily to clear the room — it's to bomb in a way that's memorable and maybe a little unsettling, but not hostile. Herman: The key tactic here is what I'd call the ambition vacuum. When your partner's parents ask about your future — career plans, where you see yourself in five years, what you're working toward — you answer every single one with "I haven't really thought about it." Delivered with a shrug. Not defensive, not embarrassed. Corn: It signals that the question itself is slightly foreign to you, like they asked about your five-year plan for breakfast cereal. Herman: You can layer in a detail like "I'm between things right now" without ever specifying what things. The "between things" formulation is elegant because it implies motion without direction. You're not stuck — you're transitioning. For how long? Corn: There's another variant — the aspiring hobbyist play. Someone asks about career goals, and you respond with complete sincerity, "I'm really trying to get good at making sourdough." The cognitive dissonance is the point. They asked about professional ambition, and you answered with bread. Herman: Sourdough specifically is perfect because it has just enough cultural cachet to be plausible — people do get into sourdough — but it's so aggressively non-professional that it derails the entire premise of the question. Corn: What I love about the sourdough answer is that it's not even a deflection. You answered the question. You told them what you're trying to get good at. The fact that it doesn't fit their framework is their problem, not yours. Herman: That's the unifying principle behind all of this. You're not lying. You're not being rude. You're just refusing to accept the premise that your value as a conversational partner is determined by your job title. You're answering the question on your own terms, and your terms happen to be aggressively boring. Corn: It's a kind of radical honesty, honestly. Most people spend these events performing a curated version of themselves. You're just performing the least curated version possible. Herman: The least curated, least ambitious, least impressive version. And the weird thing is — it's often more honest than the elevator pitch. Herman: We've got the technique down. But what actually happens after you land the line? Because the moment after delivery — that's where the real social physics kick in. Corn: The aftermath is the whole point. You're not doing this for the one-liner. You're doing it for the three to five seconds of pure, unscripted silence that follows while the other person's brain reboots. Herman: There are a few common patterns. The most frequent is the awkward pause followed by over-explanation from the other person. They suddenly feel compelled to fill the silence, so they start talking about their own job in way too much detail — partly to re-establish the script you just broke, partly because your flat response made them nervous. Corn: Which is fascinating. You said almost nothing, and now they're giving you their quarterly projections. You've become the interviewer without asking a single question. Herman: Then there's the person who sees through the bit. They catch the faintest flicker in your eye, or maybe they've just been waiting their whole life for someone else who hates this game, and they play along. They respond with something like "Oh, compliance auditing — how's the mid-tier insurance market these days?" And suddenly you've found your person. Corn: That's the unexpected connection case. It's rare, but when it happens, it's genuine. You've filtered the room for people who share your sense of humor without having to announce it. Herman: There's a Quora thread about this — someone described telling a room full of venture capitalists that they run a small Etsy shop selling felted wool ornaments. They said the VCs lost interest in about eight seconds flat. One of them literally checked their phone mid-sentence. Corn: Eight seconds is an eternity in conversation time. That's not a polite disengagement — that's a system crash. Herman: Another person reported saying "I'm a freelance captioner for corporate training videos" and watching a partner-track lawyer physically turn away mid-sentence. Not even a transition — just a pivot. Shoulder first, then the rest of the body. Corn: The shoulder-first pivot is the physical manifestation of status recalibration. Their body decided the conversation was over before their brain caught up. Herman: Now, there's a knock-on effect here that's worth naming — the reverse halo effect. Normally, if you signal high status, people attribute positive traits to you across the board. You're assumed to be smart, capable, worth knowing. But when you signal low status deliberately, something interesting happens. People stop trying to impress you. Corn: Which means you get to see them more honestly. They're not performing for you anymore because they've decided you're not worth performing for. You've become socially invisible in exactly the way that lets you observe. Herman: It's a form of social reconnaissance. You're not in the competition, so you can watch the competition with clear eyes. Who's nervous? Who's overcompensating? Who's kind to the person they think is a data entry clerk? Corn: That last one is the real test. If someone's still decent to you after you've signaled zero status, that's actual character. Herman: This brings us to the ethical boundary, because there is one. When does playful social trolling cross into deception or cruelty? Corn: The line, I think, is whether the other person has a legitimate stake in knowing who you actually are. If you're at a party and some random VC asks what you do, that's fair game. They're not entitled to your resume. But if you're talking to someone who might be a future employer, or a colleague's spouse who's trying to connect — bombing that interaction on purpose is just self-sabotage dressed up as a bit. Herman: The parent scenario is trickier than it seems. If you're meeting your partner's parents and you give them the full "I'm between things" treatment, that's funny for about ten minutes. But if they're anxious about their child's future, and you let them marinate in that anxiety for weeks because you committed to the bit — that's not playful. That's mean. Corn: The exit strategy matters. You need to know when to drop it. If someone shows genuine interest in your boring persona — not status-calibrating, just curious — you can either reveal the game or lean in and enjoy the absurdity. But you have to read the room. Herman: There's a cautionary tale from the research. One person reported that after years of saying they were "in logistics," their partner's parents believed they drove a truck. They started giving them advice about back pain. About lumbar support and proper lifting technique. Corn: That's the "too convincing" trap. The bit became their identity, and now they're getting unsolicited ergonomics counsel from their mother-in-law. Herman: Which is also kind of beautiful, in a way. They cared enough to research back pain. That's not status anxiety — that's love. Corn: Or at least a very practical form of concern. Either way, the lesson is: have an exit strategy. Know when the joke has run its course, and know who deserves your actual self. Corn: Alright, let's pull this together into something usable. If you're going to try this — and I think you should, at least once — you need a kit. Three boring lines, pre-loaded, ready to deploy depending on the room. Herman: This is the tactical loadout. One for professional events — your "I update spreadsheets for a regional logistics coordinator" or "I process vendor onboarding forms for a mid-sized dental supply distributor." One for social gatherings — something looser, like "I'm mostly doing freelance data cleanup right now." Vague, unglamorous, impossible to follow up on. Corn: One for the partner's parents. This one needs a different calibration — less corporate, more existential drift. "I'm figuring some things out." "Taking some time to explore." The key is making it sound peaceful rather than lost. Herman: Practice these with a completely neutral face. I mean literally practice — in a mirror, on video. The deadpan is everything. If your eyebrow twitches, you've leaked the joke. Corn: The real power move isn't the line — it's what comes after. You land the boring answer, let the silence bloom for a beat, and then you ask them a question about themselves. You've just flipped the dynamic entirely. You're not the interviewee anymore. You're the interviewer. Herman: People love talking about themselves. They'll take the baton and run with it, often with visible relief that the spotlight's off them. You've given them a gift they didn't know they wanted. Corn: Third thing — know when to drop the bit. If someone shows genuine curiosity, not status-calibrating but actual interest, you have two choices. Reveal the game — "I'm kidding, I actually do X" — or lean in and enjoy the absurdity. Either way, have an exit strategy. Don't let the persona eat the person. Herman: The too-convincing trap is real. You don't want to be getting lumbar support advice from your in-laws for a decade because you committed too hard to "logistics. Corn: Here's the final thought, and I think it's the one that matters. This isn't about being antisocial. It's about reclaiming agency in a social script that usually strips it away. The goal isn't to alienate people — it's to opt out of the status auction and see who's still standing there when the bidding stops. Herman: I think there's a bigger question underneath all of this, and it's worth sitting with. Why does an unambitious answer make us uncomfortable? What does that discomfort say about how we value people? Corn: That's the thing. If someone tells you they process vendor onboarding forms, and you feel a little pang of — what, disappointment? — that's not about them. That's about you. You've been trained to sort people by utility, and when someone refuses to provide the sorting data, it's unsettling. Herman: As remote work and the gig economy keep blurring job titles into meaninglessness, the "What do you do?" question is only going to get more fraught. Half the people at that party are doing three things at once, none of which fit on a business card. The question itself is becoming obsolete, which makes it even more ripe for trolling. Corn: Here's our call to action. Try it once. Next time someone asks what you do, give them the most boring answer you can muster with a straight face. Not hostile, not apologetic — just flat. And then watch what happens. We want to hear these stories. Herman: Because the best field reports are the ones where something unexpected happens. The person who sees through the bit. The in-law who starts giving you back pain advice. The VC who checks their phone mid-sentence. Those are the moments. Corn: Now: Hilbert's daily fun fact. Hilbert: In the late sixteen hundreds, a merchant on the island of Ndzwani in the Comoros archipelago kept his accounts using a distinctive abacus strung with threaded coconut shell beads on palm fiber — the only surviving example of this variant, now held in a private collection in Moroni. Herman:...coconut shell beads. Corn: That's going to sit with me. Herman: This has been My Weird Prompts. Thanks to our producer Hilbert Flumingtop. If you enjoyed this episode, tell someone about the show — preferably at a party, right after they ask what you do. Corn: I'm Corn. Herman: I'm Herman Poppleberry. Try the boring line. We'll be here.
