- 0:01Hey guys, it's Dina from the Roy Blue Candle, also known as Mentor365 Services.
- 0:06And today's topic, we are going to talk about the 2190 rule,
- 0:12what it means for habit change so you can try, track, and sustain.
- 0:17So you may have heard about the 2190 day rule,
- 0:22a simple, catchy idea that suggests forming a new habit takes 21 days and turning
- 0:29that habit into a lasting lifestyle takes 90 days.
- 0:33It's a notion that resonates with many people seeking a clear roadmap for change
- 0:38but the truth is it's a bit more nonsense.
- 0:42Scientific research shows that how long it takes to form a habit varies widely
- 0:47depending on the behavior, the person, and the surrounding environment.
- 0:52So widely cited study by Lolly and colleagues found that on average it takes
- 0:59about 66 days for a habit to reach a level of automaticity, right?
- 1:05But individuals' times range from as little as 18 days to well over a year.
- 1:11Another key takeaway is that some habits
- 1:15never become fully automatic without ongoing reinforcement
- 1:19or adaptation to life changes with that
- 1:22in mind the 2190 day rule can
- 1:25still offer a helpful structure if we frame
- 1:28it as a flexible stage plan rather than
- 1:31a fixed deadline so how you can translate this into a practical achievable steps
- 1:39is start with micro habits the core idea is to begin with tiny actions that
- 1:45you can repeat reliable every single day.
- 1:50Tiny actions reduce friction, build early momentum, and make consistency more
- 1:56likely than chasing the dramatic infrequent efforts.
- 2:00Pair your micro habits with a simple cue, routine reward loop,
- 2:05a cue that signals the moment to act, a tiny routine that becomes your habit,
- 2:13and a small reward that reinforces the behavior.
- 2:16Like for example, if your goal is to drink more water, your cue could be waking up in the morning.
- 2:23Your routine could be one glass of water, and your reward could be a moment
- 2:28of mindful pause or a favorite mental shift.
- 2:31So, a practical 30-60 day launch window can serve as a useful benchmark.
- 2:38In those first weeks, prioritize consistency over perfection.
- 2:42Treat the next 30-60 days as a launch period to establish the pattern,
- 2:47not as a final judgment on your willpower or discipline.
- 2:52Then after that launch a phase reassess if the habit is sticking you can expand
- 2:58the routine slightly adjust the cue if needed or introduce a second micro habit
- 3:04to build a broader routine,
- 3:06if that doesn't work you know sticking it it's time to um revamp right tweak
- 3:13the cue shorten it or lengthen the routine or switch a reward to something more
- 3:18motivating so measurement matters but keep it light.
- 3:22A simple habit tracker or a counter sticker can provide visibility into your momentum.
- 3:29The goal isn't perfection. It's noticing trends over time, identifying when
- 3:34you are slipping and catching patterns early so you can course correct.
- 3:39Remember to celebrate micro wins along the way.
- 3:43So small, consistent progress compounds your future self with thank you for
- 3:49showing up day after day.
- 3:51So the obstacles are a part of a journey. We all know that.
- 3:55Life changes, schedule shifts, and sometimes motivation wanes.
- 4:00So build in if-then plans to handle slips.
- 4:04For example, if I miss my evening scratch, I'll do a two-minute routine before bed or the next morning.
- 4:10If-then plans reduce position of fatigue and keep you moving forward,
- 4:16even when circumstances aren't ideal.
- 4:19Also, seek support. Share your goals with trusted friend or join a small accountability
- 4:25group or a community can provide encouragement, accountability,
- 4:30and fresh ideas for making habits work in real life.
- 4:34So, what are you hoping to change?
- 4:37Perhaps it's a hydration habit or a short daily movement practice,
- 4:42sleep hygiene tweak, or structured journaling routine.
- 4:46The 2190 day framing invites you to approach the change as a process, not a one-time event.
- 4:53It invites a stage commitment, a three-week launch, or a three-month consolidation,
- 4:59and then ongoing refinement.
- 5:01The elegance of this approach is not in the exact numbers, but in mind shift,
- 5:07it encourages the willingness to start small,
- 5:11stay consistent, and adapt as needed so there you have it i hope this helps
- 5:15thank you so much and i hope to see you guys next time take care.
