- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 4, we're given
- 0:45another account of the temptation of Jesus in the
- 0:48wilderness. We're told that Jesus ate
- 0:50nothing for 40 days, and when those 40 days were up, he became
- 0:53hungry. It is at that point that the
- 0:55devil approached him to tempt him.
- 0:58From there, Jesus is explicitly tempted by Satan three times.
- 1:02First, Satan tempts him to turn stones into bread to prove his
- 1:06position as the Son of God. Second, Satan offers Jesus all
- 1:09the kingdoms of the world in exchange for Jesus worshipping
- 1:13him. And last, Satan attempts to
- 1:15entice Jesus into jumping off the top of the temple so that
- 1:19the angels would rescue him. All three of these acts Jesus
- 1:22certainly has the power to do. Jesus could, by his own power,
- 1:26turn stones into bread. Psalm 2 tells us that the
- 1:29nations of the world are Jesus inheritance.
- 1:32They will forever belong to him. And without doubt, Jesus could
- 1:36command the angels to rescue him if he jumped from the top of the
- 1:39temple. But in each of these cases,
- 1:42Satan is tempting Jesus to demonstrate his power on
- 1:44command. He's inviting him to receive
- 1:47something that is rightfully his, but before the proper time.
- 1:51Just like he did in the Garden, Satan is offering something that
- 1:53looks appealing but isn't in God's timing.
- 1:57Unlike Adam and Eve in the Garden, though, Jesus resists.
- 2:01Jesus is not swayed by the allure of what Satan has to
- 2:04offer. And pay close attention to how
- 2:07it is that Jesus fights back against the temptation of the
- 2:10evil one in each of the three temptations.
- 2:12Jesus responds by quoting the Scriptures.
- 2:16It is written He uses God's Word to fight off the one who would
- 2:20attempt to lead him out of God's will.
- 2:24And so it is for us. Ephesians 6 outlines for
- 2:27believers how we ought to armor ourselves for the spiritual war
- 2:30that we engage in every day. In particular, that passage
- 2:34offers us, along with a handful of pieces of defensive armor,
- 2:38one offensive weapon, one instrument with which we can
- 2:41fight back. And what is it?
- 2:44Listen to Ephesians 617 and take the helmet of salvation and the
- 2:49sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
- 2:52The sword of the Spirit, the sword by which the Holy Spirit
- 2:56makes war against the schemes of the enemy, is the Word of God,
- 3:00the Scriptures. The Bible is our weapon against
- 3:04the attack of Satan and his minions, and so we fight just
- 3:07like Jesus did. It is written so.
- 3:11Take up this sword, Claim the promises of the Bible, believe
- 3:15what God says is true, believe what God says is right, and be
- 3:20like the blessed man in Psalm 1 who delights in the law of the
- 3:24Lord and is found to be like a tree firmly planted by streams
- 3:28of water. Stand against temptation by
- 3:32standing firm in the Word of God.
