- 0:02Speaker 1: with Sean McDonald. I recognized that we all have different
- 0:05Speaker 1: definitions of success. For you, it may be the size
- 0:08Speaker 1: of your paycheck. Mine is inspiring people to accomplish their
- 0:10Speaker 1: goals and live their very best life. It's time to
- 0:13Speaker 1: stop reading other people's success stores and start writing your own.
- 0:16Speaker 1: People always talk about their purpose or gifts. If you
- 0:19Speaker 1: have a gift, leave with your gifts and don't let
- 0:21Speaker 1: your friends, family, or coworkers stop you from planning or
- 0:24Speaker 1: living your dream. My guests, it is Lamar Taylor. He's
- 0:27Speaker 1: the CEO and founder of Tyler New Media, one of
- 0:30Speaker 1: the fastest growing profit companies in America, the parent company
- 0:34Speaker 1: of celebrated digital brands like Traffic Sales and Profit TSP,
- 0:38Speaker 1: America's premier learning community for purpose driven African American businesses
- 0:42Speaker 1: and entrepreneurs, and Black and Married with Kids dot com,
- 0:46Speaker 1: the largest independent African American marriage and parenting site on
- 0:49Speaker 1: the web. Lamar tries to guide families and entrepreneurs to
- 0:53Speaker 1: discover their true purpose and legacy. Please Working to Money
- 0:56Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass the one and only Lamar Taylor. Thank
- 1:00Speaker 1: you had me on apologize. I apologize with that for that,
- 1:04Speaker 1: so Tyler and did put the A in there. Mar Tyler,
- 1:08Speaker 1: thank you you're coming on the show. Ain't no problem again.
- 1:12Speaker 1: It's excited to be here. So you're you're Atlantin native.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I know your business is based in Atlanta. No, I'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: originally from Maryland, Prince George's County. So you if not
- 1:22Speaker 1: already my dn vieven Akola won't pick up during the interview.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You know there that that's called the Black Beverly Hills
- 1:28Speaker 1: out there on the East coast the last time I checked.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So you know you you come from high Cock Cotton,
- 1:33Speaker 1: as they said, the South. What you just just for
- 1:37Speaker 1: grants what you feel everybody on the community that you
- 1:40Speaker 1: came out of it and why it has that upper
- 1:42Speaker 1: remobile reputation on the East coast. You know, I tell
- 1:46Speaker 1: people that, um, the DMV right DC Maryland area in
- 1:50Speaker 1: Pitch George County specifically, it actually feels a lot like Atlanta.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And when when I was looking, I was looking for
- 1:55Speaker 1: some way to move, I wanted to move to the South.
- 1:57Speaker 1: It was it wasn't a lot of places actually could
- 1:59Speaker 1: move too. Because I was kind of conditioned to being
- 2:01Speaker 1: around my people, right, and being around success and in
- 2:04Speaker 1: that one community you got you know, you got poverty,
- 2:06Speaker 1: but you got middle class, got upper class. And in
- 2:09Speaker 1: any you know, restaurant, you go to any shopping center,
- 2:11Speaker 1: any store, it wouldn't be surprised to see other people
- 2:15Speaker 1: that look like you. And I feel like Atlanta has
- 2:17Speaker 1: that that that same feeling the monkey um. But but
- 2:20Speaker 1: what I realized is that to me, the difference between
- 2:22Speaker 1: the two is where in the DMV UM a lot
- 2:26Speaker 1: of money there, right, And there's a lot of people
- 2:29Speaker 1: in our community making a lot of money, but a
- 2:30Speaker 1: lot of it is corporate money. A lot of it
- 2:32Speaker 1: is government based money and government contracts and things like that.
- 2:35Speaker 1: In Atlanta, it's the same type of money, but a
- 2:38Speaker 1: lot of us feel through entrepreneurship, which is exciting to me.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What entrepreneurship which is really really exciting. It's really really
- 2:43Speaker 1: exciting to what we're trying to do here for your
- 2:46Speaker 1: base and your brand, because you're coming on this show
- 2:48Speaker 1: marketing and branding, you know, and you've branded a lot
- 2:50Speaker 1: of success things. And when I when I bring guests
- 2:53Speaker 1: on the show, I try to get them to share summer,
- 2:55Speaker 1: their their tips, you know, about marketing in branding. Now,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you have an event coming up, uh believe it the
- 3:01Speaker 1: next weekend. Tell us about that event and what celebrity
- 3:04Speaker 1: are you bringing in? Sure, we have an event called
- 3:07Speaker 1: t SP Live right uh through our brand, Traffic, Sales
- 3:09Speaker 1: and Profit Uh June in Alpharetta at the Alvaline Hotel
- 3:14Speaker 1: and Alpharetta and we're bringing in Magic Johnson as the keynote.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And you know the thing for this conference clus is
- 3:20Speaker 1: following the money and we're really all about pushing black
- 3:24Speaker 1: entrepreneurs to get out of side gigs, side hustle mentality
- 3:28Speaker 1: and say, hey, you know, we gotta build enterprises and
- 3:30Speaker 1: not just you know, solo opreneurships, not unseen black businesses
- 3:34Speaker 1: and solopreneurs, but how can we build enterprises that we
- 3:36Speaker 1: can grow scale and exit? Right? That that an exit
- 3:40Speaker 1: part is uh is key right, grow scale and exit
- 3:42Speaker 1: and you know, create employment in our communities, funnel money
- 3:45Speaker 1: into our communities and just growing scale. And we want
- 3:48Speaker 1: Magic Irban Magic Johnson come and have that conversation with us. Well,
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's important that you but we'll rob Magic Johnson because
- 3:55Speaker 1: he is an entrepreneur, because he is a name, which
- 3:57Speaker 1: because you're kind of getting both with him. You get
- 3:59Speaker 1: that entrepreneur the world spirit. You're getting a dreamer, you
- 4:02Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And he and and Magic come
- 4:04Speaker 1: from humble beginnings. By the way, if you don't really
- 4:06Speaker 1: know his background, straight out of Michigan. Uh his dad
- 4:09Speaker 1: with manual labor and h but he had to give
- 4:12Speaker 1: to play basketball and then he had the personality. I
- 4:14Speaker 1: always tell people this about Magic Johnson. If he wasn't
- 4:16Speaker 1: a famous basketball player, he would be a successful entrepreneur
- 4:19Speaker 1: because that's all he wanted to be all his life.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And so when you go through your little list of
- 4:24Speaker 1: who you want to bring to your event, why Magic Johnson? Well,
- 4:28Speaker 1: it was the combination to all those things you said,
- 4:30Speaker 1: Because it's a lot of times we look at people
- 4:32Speaker 1: and maybe celebrities when I say, are they really hardcore entrepreneurs?
- 4:36Speaker 1: And you know, they could be someone with a brand
- 4:38Speaker 1: and somebody um you know, connects them with something to
- 4:41Speaker 1: make more money from. But like you said, I feel
- 4:43Speaker 1: like Magic Johnson isn't entrepreneur. He's a dream He thinks big,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and that's we want to really encourage people in the
- 4:49Speaker 1: audience it is to be live to do like think big,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and think larger than a lot of times what we
- 4:54Speaker 1: currently do, and so many times, so many of us,
- 4:57Speaker 1: maybe first generation entrepreneurs, we may not have grown up
- 4:59Speaker 1: around entrepreneurship, so we might need somebody to stretch what
- 5:03Speaker 1: we actually think it's possible for ourselves. And that's why
- 5:05Speaker 1: we picked them to come in and have that conversation.
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm speaking with Lamar Tyler, who's the CEO and co
- 5:09Speaker 1: founder Tyler New Media and the company we're talking about
- 5:13Speaker 1: right now, Traffic, Sales and Profit, which is TSP. Basically,
- 5:17Speaker 1: when you say America's premier learning community for purfoset driven
- 5:20Speaker 1: African American business and entrepreneur that's a mouthful, but can
- 5:24Speaker 1: you break it down to the common folk? Yeah, So,
- 5:27Speaker 1: so what we're about I like that too. What we're
- 5:30Speaker 1: about is we're about uplifting our community, right, Black entrepreneurs
- 5:36Speaker 1: uh specifically and say hey, you know, we want to build,
- 5:37Speaker 1: like I said, not just side hustles, but actual businesses
- 5:41Speaker 1: that can employ people in our communities. Because I always say,
- 5:44Speaker 1: you know, we have large unemployment in the Black community personally,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I think one of the main reasons is because we
- 5:48Speaker 1: don't employ people, and I think most people when they
- 5:51Speaker 1: hire people, they hire people like them, right they look
- 5:53Speaker 1: like them. So we need to hire and employ more people.
- 5:56Speaker 1: And right now, black folks are starting companies faster and
- 6:00Speaker 1: more than any other group. But we need to make
- 6:02Speaker 1: sure again we're going companies that actually can grow in
- 6:04Speaker 1: scale and get beyond it. So when we talk about
- 6:06Speaker 1: purpose Driffin entrepreneurs, we're trying to find people to say, hey,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know what, I know that there's something bigger than
- 6:12Speaker 1: I want to do for me, for my business, for
- 6:14Speaker 1: my family. I know I want to leave the legacy
- 6:16Speaker 1: beyond what I do. Um you know, I know that, Hey,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you know, when I create something, I'm not just prating
- 6:21Speaker 1: it for me and my kids, but I want to
- 6:22Speaker 1: create it for my kids, kids, kids. And again, looking
- 6:25Speaker 1: at the entrepreneurship, it is the way for us to
- 6:26Speaker 1: close the economic wealf gap, for a way for us
- 6:29Speaker 1: to gain economic power so we can change some of
- 6:31Speaker 1: the leveraging things that you know, just deportionately happened in
- 6:35Speaker 1: the African American community. When I talk to you, Lamar,
- 6:37Speaker 1: you know, everybody has a vision, which is awesome. And
- 6:39Speaker 1: sometimes I've created this show so everybody can have a voice.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You know, you know I was I was going, how
- 6:45Speaker 1: can I talk to people? How can they just give?
- 6:47Speaker 1: Because you're the new stars entrepreneurs or the new stars
- 6:49Speaker 1: of the black community. It's true and and so we
- 6:52Speaker 1: can we can put that celebrity tag on it. But
- 6:54Speaker 1: with social media and being able to tell your story
- 6:57Speaker 1: and control your narrative, you guys are the new stars.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Did you hear something like up in Stone cresh Geargea
- 7:02Speaker 1: the New Black Wall Street, which is which is basically
- 7:06Speaker 1: a mall for up and common entrepreneurs or established entrepreneurs.
- 7:11Speaker 1: What is what you're doing in your platform different from
- 7:15Speaker 1: what they're doing at their platform? Well, um, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: not specifically you know about that one per se, right,
- 7:22Speaker 1: but a lot of what people are being told online, um,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and there's a lot a lot of these conversations about
- 7:28Speaker 1: you know, so I suppose other new rock stars happening
- 7:30Speaker 1: online through social media, but a lot of times when
- 7:32Speaker 1: people are being taught and trained through social media, it's
- 7:35Speaker 1: more about hustle than it is about business, and it's
- 7:37Speaker 1: about hey, I can make this like quick money, right,
- 7:39Speaker 1: How I can you know, do something real fast and
- 7:41Speaker 1: flip this and flip that. But we're trying to tell folks,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you need to build something that's sustainable. You need to
- 7:46Speaker 1: build something so that guess what it works when you don't.
- 7:49Speaker 1: In order to do that, we need systems around it,
- 7:51Speaker 1: We need processes around it, we need people around it.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Those are team and staff that we might need to
- 7:56Speaker 1: be able to implement and do things better than we can.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And too many times when we don't have these different
- 8:01Speaker 1: pieces of the puzzle together, then we get caught. We
- 8:03Speaker 1: get caught into something that may make money right away,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and maybe you know we're doing good, but it's a
- 8:08Speaker 1: few things people don't understand. If I'm going to it
- 8:10Speaker 1: for a second, one of those. One of those things
- 8:12Speaker 1: that people don't understand is a lot of new entrepreneurs
- 8:15Speaker 1: that are first coming in. When we talked to him,
- 8:17Speaker 1: we say, hey, what's your goal. How much money you
- 8:19Speaker 1: want to make in the business. They said, well, my
- 8:21Speaker 1: goal is to get to six figures. I want a
- 8:22Speaker 1: six figure business. We tell folks, well, if the business
- 8:25Speaker 1: gets just the six figures, which is a hundred thousand
- 8:27Speaker 1: dollars a year by the time you take out expenses,
- 8:30Speaker 1: if you've got a product business by the time you
- 8:32Speaker 1: take out your cost, the good soul with a service business. Right. Uh,
- 8:35Speaker 1: if you've got other people or other processes of vantage,
- 8:38Speaker 1: you gotta pay. Many people at the end of the
- 8:40Speaker 1: yeard will actually bring home less money than they did
- 8:42Speaker 1: when they work for somebody else. And what they've essentially
- 8:45Speaker 1: done is replaced the old job with a new job.
- 8:47Speaker 1: But guess what, the new job oftentimes doesn't have vacation
- 8:51Speaker 1: because you're not able to take time off because when
- 8:53Speaker 1: you start working, the business stops working. The new job
- 8:56Speaker 1: doesn't have benefits a lot of times of benefits like
- 8:58Speaker 1: the old job does. The new job doesn't pay you.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Because there's a lot of entrepreneurs that's still right, the
- 9:03Speaker 1: business doesn't pay them. So again, it's not just about
- 9:06Speaker 1: making money. It's about being able to grow scale and
- 9:09Speaker 1: make enough money so you can uh provide for yourself
- 9:12Speaker 1: for your community as well, and being able to again
- 9:15Speaker 1: create systems, process and pieces around the business so that
- 9:18Speaker 1: you have a full operational enterprise. We'll be right back
- 9:21Speaker 1: with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Now,
- 9:27Speaker 1: let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Now,
- 9:33Speaker 1: when I was when I was doing my research, it
- 9:35Speaker 1: was saying how many do you have a set number
- 9:38Speaker 1: of members you know under a TSP or how do
- 9:41Speaker 1: you are are is that I wouldn't call them fan
- 9:44Speaker 1: club members. I'm assuming them call them members and how
- 9:47Speaker 1: and where do they get out of being a member? Sure?
- 9:50Speaker 1: So we have a free community on Facebook traffic, sales
- 9:53Speaker 1: and profit. It's a Facebook groups, a Facebook group yet
- 9:59Speaker 1: right forty people. And then besides that, we do have
- 10:03Speaker 1: some actual programs inside of the community. We have a
- 10:05Speaker 1: monthly membership excuse me, a monthly membership um that has
- 10:09Speaker 1: a right around a thousand people in it, where you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: it's courses and trainees on demand. Around traffic, that's you know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: getting leads and more people in front of your offers
- 10:18Speaker 1: around uh conversions, which is getting more sales. How can
- 10:20Speaker 1: I get people to me and see my website, see
- 10:23Speaker 1: what I'm offering and selling and then get them to
- 10:25Speaker 1: buy more? How can I increase the amount of profit
- 10:27Speaker 1: in my business? So I called it like a Netflix
- 10:28Speaker 1: with black entrepreneurs, where it's courses, it's information, is resources
- 10:32Speaker 1: as templates, it's checklist for you to get what you need,
- 10:35Speaker 1: study at your own pace and kind of move on.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And then beyond that, We have a Group Mastermind, which
- 10:40Speaker 1: is basically a twelve month coaching program. We have two
- 10:43Speaker 1: companies and that that go through the year with us.
- 10:45Speaker 1: We have UM coaches right to work with from on
- 10:47Speaker 1: a monthly basis. That separating the teams where we get
- 10:51Speaker 1: businesses together the same size and growth stage and then
- 10:54Speaker 1: that are kind of like in the same niche and
- 10:56Speaker 1: they have UH calls together every month. They get UM
- 11:00Speaker 1: coach every month. That kind of goes with them. You
- 11:02Speaker 1: do Coolly events here in Atlanta, and they're all across
- 11:04Speaker 1: the country California to New York and Florida and everywhere
- 11:06Speaker 1: in between, but they come out to Atlanta once a
- 11:09Speaker 1: quarter and we work with them. So no matter what
- 11:11Speaker 1: stage people are at, right, it's some and sometimes you
- 11:14Speaker 1: know this. In order to be success, you have the
- 11:16Speaker 1: best something, whether you want to invest time, you've best
- 11:18Speaker 1: money or both. Right, we have ways we can meet
- 11:20Speaker 1: people a where they're at so we can help be successful.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You're good talk or not, Lamar, You've been told push
- 11:28Speaker 1: magic Yall's not the way to take over that mine.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I tell you magic can talk talk like Lamar Tyler.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Now I'll just let you know you always find these leaders,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you find out why they're successful. One communications number one.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Being able to create relationships is number two, and then consistency.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I always say those are the three things you you.
- 11:45Speaker 1: You gotta be able to communicate, you gotta have the
- 11:47Speaker 1: relationships to be able to build on your communication, and
- 11:50Speaker 1: you gotta be consistent. Basically, what I'm saying there is
- 11:52Speaker 1: that when people ask you for something, you can deliver,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and when you deliver, it's not I'll get back with
- 11:58Speaker 1: you deliver. They ask you said you gotta problem. You
- 12:01Speaker 1: say you got a hamburgers. You put a hamburger on
- 12:03Speaker 1: that stand when he come in to ask for it.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And so many people make that mistake because, like you said,
- 12:08Speaker 1: I want to make six figures. I don't know what
- 12:09Speaker 1: that means, because like I said, you know, and I
- 12:11Speaker 1: could go over back to my personal store. I remember
- 12:13Speaker 1: NAT they need to. I opened up very successful comedy
- 12:16Speaker 1: club in Houston, Texas called Hip Hop Comedy Stuff, got
- 12:19Speaker 1: in business with a with a partner. Knew nothing about him,
- 12:22Speaker 1: so I didn't even have a business plan, opened the
- 12:25Speaker 1: door with charging ten dollars, and then really then suddenly
- 12:28Speaker 1: the state of Texas showed up, Okay, we need six
- 12:30Speaker 1: percent of that ten dollars okay, and then uh that
- 12:34Speaker 1: I was serving liquor and then look a man came
- 12:37Speaker 1: and said, look, we need party of liquor sale. So
- 12:40Speaker 1: when I thought I was getting that actual ten dollars,
- 12:42Speaker 1: then I started putting together that budget, the rent, the gas,
- 12:45Speaker 1: the security, buying tickets to sell, the insurance. That ten
- 12:51Speaker 1: dollars really gets to one dollar real quick if you
- 12:54Speaker 1: don't plan correctly. And they So a good friend of
- 12:58Speaker 1: mine is at the s p A. You know, it's
- 13:00Speaker 1: Small Business Administration. Do you see there's value in those
- 13:03Speaker 1: type of organizations with your organization? I think there are, right,
- 13:07Speaker 1: I definitely think there are. So that it's I think
- 13:09Speaker 1: it's a two way street. This is a conversation. It's
- 13:12Speaker 1: a two way street. So in one hand, there are
- 13:16Speaker 1: organizations and outfits that have resources that a lot of
- 13:19Speaker 1: times I don't feel like our community taps into. Right.
- 13:22Speaker 1: On the other hand, a lot of times when we
- 13:23Speaker 1: try to tap into different resources, we denied when we
- 13:27Speaker 1: shouldn't be denied and we should get access to it.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So in organizations like the s b A, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I think that there is information. Um, you got organizations
- 13:35Speaker 1: like SCORE where they can provide mentors and things like that,
- 13:38Speaker 1: um but sometimes entrepreneurs may still need more, right, um So,
- 13:42Speaker 1: so I think it's both of those things we need
- 13:44Speaker 1: to go out and search for and find all, Right,
- 13:47Speaker 1: what are the resources that are available out there? Force
- 13:49Speaker 1: how can we connect with that? Especially over the last
- 13:51Speaker 1: year and a half to two years, there have been
- 13:53Speaker 1: a lot of grants made available there weren't before because
- 13:56Speaker 1: of you know, the pandemic, because of the racial client
- 14:00Speaker 1: in the country. There's a lot of organizations that say, hey,
- 14:02Speaker 1: we want to do special things for black entrepreneurs. Now,
- 14:05Speaker 1: whether they meant that or not still remains to be seen.
- 14:08Speaker 1: But in the meantime, right, there's some initial things that
- 14:10Speaker 1: happened and some initial opportunities that may not have been
- 14:13Speaker 1: there before it are now. So we have to take
- 14:15Speaker 1: advantage of what's there, when, when when we do it,
- 14:18Speaker 1: and when it is available. Well, you know that amost
- 14:21Speaker 1: shift kids because I'm a black man and married with
- 14:25Speaker 1: one kid one kid now and she I love her death.
- 14:28Speaker 1: She just graduated from college and now she's trying to
- 14:30Speaker 1: find her way through college life after college. So what
- 14:34Speaker 1: what led you to men that you are a black man?
- 14:37Speaker 1: You know you are happitally, marriage, got kids, that's that's
- 14:39Speaker 1: the that's the base core. But how do you take
- 14:42Speaker 1: that idea? That's what I love about people like you, Lamar.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You know everybody walks around with these ideas. Everybody got
- 14:48Speaker 1: the same situation. How did it come about that you
- 14:52Speaker 1: my friend figured it out. That's a great question, And
- 14:56Speaker 1: I love what you said. Everybody has ideas. And that's
- 14:58Speaker 1: for everybody listening that's thinking about business and entrepreneurship. That's
- 15:02Speaker 1: what they have to realize because a lot of times
- 15:03Speaker 1: I'll run the people who say, well, I got a
- 15:05Speaker 1: great idea if I could just find somebody to execute,
- 15:07Speaker 1: But the money is all in the execution of it.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Everybody on this planet has an idea. For us, what
- 15:13Speaker 1: it was is, uh, we launched a brand called black
- 15:16Speaker 1: and Married with Kids Back and be similar two thousand
- 15:18Speaker 1: and seven, and my wife, Ronnie and I who's my
- 15:20Speaker 1: business partner, we sat down and said, what's something that
- 15:23Speaker 1: we're passionate about, So if it takes all five or
- 15:25Speaker 1: six years from now, we'll still feel like doing it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: So we said, uh, And and people want to talk
- 15:30Speaker 1: about because in the time it was it was a website.
- 15:32Speaker 1: It was content, it was written, it was a blog,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and we can write. But you know, some people say,
- 15:37Speaker 1: I love the rite whether no one's watching, and somebody
- 15:39Speaker 1: gotta be watching if I'm right, right, not right, but
- 15:41Speaker 1: somebody gotta be reading. So we said, let's talk about relationships.
- 15:44Speaker 1: People love talking relationships. Then we dug deeper and said, hey,
- 15:47Speaker 1: you know, let's talk about relationships in the black community.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And we dug deeper and said, let's talk about the
- 15:51Speaker 1: way marriage is viewed in the black community. Said it
- 15:54Speaker 1: gotta be other couples out here like ourselves that love
- 15:56Speaker 1: each other, that are about being to gather, and let's
- 16:00Speaker 1: lift up and talk about parenting right because we know
- 16:02Speaker 1: that they're black dads in the home, even though that
- 16:05Speaker 1: conversation has never had his black dad's in the home
- 16:07Speaker 1: taking care of their kids and oftentimes someone else's kids too.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So we launched black and Married with Kids dot com.
- 16:13Speaker 1: It was a huge void in that space. We knew
- 16:15Speaker 1: because we were part of that community, and we had
- 16:17Speaker 1: instantly couples coming to us said hey, I've been married years.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Thank you, because I've never seen myself represented in the TV,
- 16:23Speaker 1: on the radio, in the press, in the movies, and
- 16:26Speaker 1: we also had singles coming and said, hey, thank you
- 16:28Speaker 1: for this because my parents were married forty fifty years
- 16:30Speaker 1: so I know it exists. Or they said, I want
- 16:32Speaker 1: to be married one day, so I want to learn
- 16:34Speaker 1: as much as I can about marriage now so I
- 16:36Speaker 1: can try to make sure that when I do get married,
- 16:38Speaker 1: their relationship stays together. And from there we launched Black
- 16:41Speaker 1: and Married with Kids. Uh you know, we we this
- 16:44Speaker 1: is the first thing we did, so we had to
- 16:45Speaker 1: learn a lot about market and we did everything wrong
- 16:48Speaker 1: but was still successful in spite of it. But we
- 16:51Speaker 1: eventually went from just creating articles one time we had
- 16:55Speaker 1: to with forty freelance writers along with the time administrative staff.
- 16:58Speaker 1: We started doing documentary os. We've got seven full left
- 17:01Speaker 1: documentaries that we would do a documentary. We would do
- 17:03Speaker 1: our own seven and tenn city tours. Um you know.
- 17:06Speaker 1: We would uh go to Houston, Atlanta, d C, Chicago, um,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know, ten cities every year and we released a
- 17:13Speaker 1: new movie every single year. But we had to learn
- 17:15Speaker 1: how to market to those folks. We had to learn
- 17:18Speaker 1: how to write emails, We had to learn how to
- 17:20Speaker 1: create sales page and websites that converted people to actually
- 17:23Speaker 1: buy tickets, and we gotta into the venue. We had
- 17:25Speaker 1: to learn how to actually sell our DVDs the physical product, right,
- 17:29Speaker 1: and and eat books and things like that at the
- 17:31Speaker 1: actual venue. How to bundle them up and make more money.
- 17:34Speaker 1: It will fire average order value and average customers got there.
- 17:37Speaker 1: So we learned a lot through the process of building
- 17:39Speaker 1: that first business, and then people saw it and that's
- 17:41Speaker 1: how they said, hey, teach us how to do what
- 17:43Speaker 1: you're doing. And that's how we launching the traffic, sales
- 17:45Speaker 1: and profits. Okay, so now this is so. Now you
- 17:49Speaker 1: used the word past tense a little bit, and you
- 17:52Speaker 1: still touring. I know, the pandemic shut you down, but
- 17:55Speaker 1: you're back outter doing the tenn city tours and what
- 17:58Speaker 1: exactly is that experience? Like? We So we did those
- 18:02Speaker 1: in the earlier stages. So we did those from probably
- 18:05Speaker 1: two thousand nine to maybe um and then we then
- 18:10Speaker 1: we slowed down with it and now a lot of
- 18:12Speaker 1: what we do is just based solely kind of uh
- 18:15Speaker 1: intentionally online. What it was like is it was a
- 18:19Speaker 1: venerating if I think back to it, because what it
- 18:20Speaker 1: really was or something you shut down too soon, brother,
- 18:24Speaker 1: that's a money maker. Right now, man, that that that
- 18:27Speaker 1: that thing right there's just sitting out there waiting on somebody.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I'm kind of disappointed to you. You your brilliant guy.
- 18:33Speaker 1: But black man, you know, right right now, this is
- 18:37Speaker 1: a conference that's waiting for sponsors and to show up
- 18:40Speaker 1: and just say, hey, what do we do? They have
- 18:42Speaker 1: the Sparshion Black Peak Nicks, Greek pick Nicks. They're out there,
- 18:45Speaker 1: Sparshion Black Reunions. You have, ain't I wanted a sponsor
- 18:49Speaker 1: this when you got that demo twenty five forty five,
- 18:52Speaker 1: which is the which is the money demo? Now not Lamar.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Come on now you got magic coming in. I know
- 18:56Speaker 1: you're smart, brother, Now you gotta keeck this back up man,
- 18:59Speaker 1: just our local starting in d C. Well, you got
- 19:02Speaker 1: a bunch of black people who you know and doing
- 19:04Speaker 1: in Atlanta who You've got a bunch of black people
- 19:06Speaker 1: you know before you started running around the country. But
- 19:08Speaker 1: it's all about timing, because that's the Internet is exploded,
- 19:13Speaker 1: you know, the TikTok in so many ways you can
- 19:16Speaker 1: market that. I just see that that's a big opportunity.
- 19:19Speaker 1: And I would say to you before you go back
- 19:21Speaker 1: out get sponsorship. Yeah, well you know that that's setting.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Actually we're we're starting at arm of the business back up.
- 19:29Speaker 1: We actually launched into a streaming network. So you know,
- 19:32Speaker 1: everything has a streaming app now and you gotta go
- 19:34Speaker 1: to you know, Hulu or five stick or Apple TV
- 19:37Speaker 1: or something like that. We launched it back up streaming
- 19:39Speaker 1: network with that content to bring other content and emerge.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Basically the two brands UM the content we previously had
- 19:45Speaker 1: along with UM so many amazing entrepreneurs and people. We
- 19:48Speaker 1: got our traffic, seales and profit community to create more
- 19:50Speaker 1: content and then distributed that way. We'll be right back
- 19:53Speaker 1: with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with r Sean McDonald. Now,
- 20:00Speaker 1: let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Well,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I know that's a good thing. I'm glad I brought
- 20:08Speaker 1: that up. I hope I inspired you, young man. I'm
- 20:10Speaker 1: just to let you know when I see money and
- 20:13Speaker 1: black and married with kids dot com money ritten all
- 20:16Speaker 1: over that, my friend the largest independent African he was
- 20:19Speaker 1: saying that right now, the largest independent African American marriage
- 20:22Speaker 1: and parent in side on the web. And you and
- 20:24Speaker 1: you're not monetizing that. Come on that in the mall,
- 20:27Speaker 1: Oh Oh, we we do. We just don't do what
- 20:29Speaker 1: we used to do. We definitely monetize. We don't do
- 20:31Speaker 1: what we used to do it where we need to do.
- 20:33Speaker 1: You need to go back out there, man Pathers. Wait,
- 20:34Speaker 1: you know, and you're a lot of people at the
- 20:36Speaker 1: Gerber there's a lot of people. You know, you man
- 20:37Speaker 1: create people. You know. You. My whole thing I look
- 20:40Speaker 1: at things like that is that because you're doing it
- 20:43Speaker 1: and you've tapped into it, you are you shepherd an
- 20:47Speaker 1: opportunity to break stereotypes. That's all I'm saying. And so
- 20:51Speaker 1: we're stereotype. And when you can go and do a
- 20:53Speaker 1: conference like that in Houston and and you bring in
- 20:56Speaker 1: all those but you bring in the car dealers, you
- 20:58Speaker 1: bring it helps us ups out. Brand is black people out.
- 21:02Speaker 1: That's why I'm teaching. But I'm also putting additional pressure
- 21:04Speaker 1: on you because of the fact that streaming is convenient,
- 21:08Speaker 1: but for a brand sale to be able to go
- 21:12Speaker 1: and see black people and then and then get the
- 21:15Speaker 1: TV crews down there talking about it, because I get
- 21:18Speaker 1: tired of man and celebrations and all that stuff. You
- 21:21Speaker 1: guys have speakers. You know, you're doing no different than
- 21:23Speaker 1: you You're kind of like a a family version of
- 21:26Speaker 1: what Essence is doing in New Orleans, right, they do
- 21:30Speaker 1: a knockoff version of this is one of the seminars.
- 21:33Speaker 1: But you have to the brand. So I was just
- 21:35Speaker 1: standing on you. Just say that when you when you're
- 21:37Speaker 1: talking to me, All I do is marketing brand. All
- 21:40Speaker 1: I do is just see the next step. The next
- 21:42Speaker 1: step is that you are a brand. And not only
- 21:45Speaker 1: that only reflects a creative mindset because you thought of it,
- 21:48Speaker 1: you and your wife thought of it and built it out.
- 21:50Speaker 1: But I also realized the magnitude of your impact, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: the impact is that it makes It makes me getting
- 21:56Speaker 1: out of the car safer. It makes your child and
- 21:59Speaker 1: your your future children to be perceived as buyers in
- 22:03Speaker 1: the Google space, in the Apple space, you know, in
- 22:06Speaker 1: the in the ta J space, these spaces where they
- 22:09Speaker 1: think we should be regulated to certain buying audience is.
- 22:12Speaker 1: You know, I get mad when I go to boat shows.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Why can't we do a boat show there's black people,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you know, Why can't we have a car show that
- 22:19Speaker 1: the cars ain't jacking up and bouncing down the street.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. I get tired looking at
- 22:23Speaker 1: the news and we're just spending cars and traffic lights,
- 22:26Speaker 1: you know, and they've running after us with police cars
- 22:28Speaker 1: or they were going a t v s. You are
- 22:30Speaker 1: a brand that can change the game, and I hope
- 22:34Speaker 1: you understand where I'm coming from. This is not a negative,
- 22:37Speaker 1: but sometimes you have to look at people like you
- 22:38Speaker 1: in the eye, Lamar and go, hey, man, you have
- 22:41Speaker 1: a narrative that I have to push and encourage to
- 22:44Speaker 1: become more physical because the placement of what you're doing
- 22:47Speaker 1: in the America structure is needed. Man, there's too many
- 22:50Speaker 1: left wing thinking people to me, the right wing thinking.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I'm just thinking about black people. Do your thoughts. I love.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I think it's only right one of one of the
- 22:57Speaker 1: things that we've realized ourselves. And to two things you
- 23:01Speaker 1: hit on, um, there were times online where we were
- 23:06Speaker 1: and not just what what we did, but other stuff
- 23:08Speaker 1: we didn't pass. We were ahead of the curve, and
- 23:11Speaker 1: you can easily, you can easily get tired of doing
- 23:13Speaker 1: the thing when you're ahead of the curve, and then
- 23:16Speaker 1: later on you stopped doing the thing and then you
- 23:17Speaker 1: see everybody else doing it. And basically, you know, benefiting
- 23:20Speaker 1: from a lot of groundwork that you may have even
- 23:21Speaker 1: laid a lot of times. So I totally get it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I told I get it, I received it everything. I
- 23:26Speaker 1: totally get it. And then the other thing that that
- 23:29Speaker 1: we've learned right ourselves along this path has been UM.
- 23:33Speaker 1: When we originally launched their first brand, Black and Married
- 23:35Speaker 1: with Kids, we originally monetized through advertising right people wanted
- 23:39Speaker 1: to reach black families, black moms, they will come to us.
- 23:43Speaker 1: But when we learned how to do is we learn
- 23:44Speaker 1: how to sell to that audience ourselves and make a
- 23:47Speaker 1: lot of money for selling to the audience I sold.
- 23:48Speaker 1: But we went too far a lot of a lot
- 23:51Speaker 1: of times, you'd be too far one way, too far
- 23:53Speaker 1: another way. And while we had a lot of piers
- 23:55Speaker 1: that were totally tied into advertising UM whenever times and
- 24:00Speaker 1: drive up for a seasonal when they were switching and say, hey,
- 24:02Speaker 1: you know what, we're no longer interested in African American
- 24:04Speaker 1: dis quarter were interested in Latino. We still could thrive
- 24:07Speaker 1: because we met directly with the community. But I feel
- 24:10Speaker 1: like a lot of ways we went too far independent
- 24:12Speaker 1: to where there's a lot of corporate opportunity that we
- 24:14Speaker 1: didn't take advantage of too. So I totally you're absolutely right,
- 24:19Speaker 1: and just educate people. At one time, it used to be,
- 24:22Speaker 1: you know, all corporations had black dollars. Then they shifted
- 24:26Speaker 1: over the multicultural and they shifted that focus over the
- 24:29Speaker 1: Latino community and then and so the black was like whatever,
- 24:33Speaker 1: you know, And so he was like there struggling, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: I love PiZZ of the podcast. Smaller and smaller, that's
- 24:37Speaker 1: all he's talking about. And so I'm just saying that,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know, he was ahead of the curve, but not
- 24:41Speaker 1: the curve has swung his way. And black brand awareness
- 24:44Speaker 1: is at the front of everybody's conversation. Diversit, equity inclusions
- 24:48Speaker 1: the front of everybody's conversation, and uh and and positive
- 24:51Speaker 1: black content, especially family driven content especialists live is not
- 24:57Speaker 1: being available out there now, and so HBC usual at
- 25:00Speaker 1: the front of everybody's conversation. That's why you see so
- 25:02Speaker 1: many tours, so many conferences and things like that. But
- 25:05Speaker 1: the thing I'm just saying this is not a meeting
- 25:07Speaker 1: to say you're doing anything wrong. I know that sometimes
- 25:09Speaker 1: you get worn out, you get tired, you know, hey man, dude,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and then you find a fire over there with TSP
- 25:16Speaker 1: and that fire burning so strong. You're riding that you
- 25:18Speaker 1: got thirty thousand people you're mentioning around the country, they
- 25:20Speaker 1: fly flying in you go. That can become a back burner.
- 25:23Speaker 1: But the bigger, the bigger sale to me is that
- 25:26Speaker 1: black family married and kids. That's to me is the
- 25:29Speaker 1: is the biggest sale. A big opportunity for you to
- 25:31Speaker 1: look at. Now you know you're smart man, You develop
- 25:34Speaker 1: and stuff, you know, put somebody on that brother and
- 25:36Speaker 1: started and you come back on my show and when
- 25:38Speaker 1: you're about to kick off that next conference, because I'll
- 25:40Speaker 1: be the first one to promote it. Okay, thank you.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Cool. As we wrap up here, any
- 25:46Speaker 1: thing that we left out man, because uh, I'm impressed
- 25:49Speaker 1: with you as a brand. Like I said that, to
- 25:52Speaker 1: be able to get to know you on this call
- 25:54Speaker 1: has let me understand that there's a brighter future for
- 25:56Speaker 1: you and your family. So as you leave a closing
- 25:59Speaker 1: message for what you're trying to deliver with TSP to
- 26:02Speaker 1: the audience, well again, thank you for the opportunity to
- 26:05Speaker 1: come in and share with with your audience. Um and
- 26:06Speaker 1: for people watching again, it's just to know that there
- 26:10Speaker 1: is more. I think a lot of times we don't
- 26:11Speaker 1: stretch ourselves enough. A lot of times, you know, we
- 26:14Speaker 1: we we we like I said, we may not see
- 26:17Speaker 1: what we want to be directly around us, so we
- 26:20Speaker 1: pigeonholed ourselves and thinking we're not available to access these things.
- 26:23Speaker 1: But all of the great things, the greater things like
- 26:25Speaker 1: Balda has talked about in life, in business and family
- 26:29Speaker 1: are available to us if we just tie ourselves into
- 26:31Speaker 1: the education in the communities that have resources that we
- 26:35Speaker 1: can tap into. And then my last thing on that
- 26:37Speaker 1: is just a lot of times, um, when we think
- 26:40Speaker 1: about land ownership, when we think about real estate, we
- 26:42Speaker 1: think about business, we're thinking that we're the first ones
- 26:45Speaker 1: to do this. What we don't realize is that generations
- 26:48Speaker 1: of us before, like, we come from the people that
- 26:50Speaker 1: owned land. Now, the land may have been taken from
- 26:52Speaker 1: us over the last you know, a few uh decades generations,
- 26:55Speaker 1: but we come from a people that own land. We
- 26:57Speaker 1: come from a people that had successful businesses because there
- 27:00Speaker 1: were no other ways. So it's time for us just
- 27:01Speaker 1: to tap back into you know, our businesses, our families
- 27:04Speaker 1: and more so we can uplift the build our communities.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Where you're here and he's articularly you're smart and he's
- 27:09Speaker 1: a he's a generational leader, black and married with kids
- 27:12Speaker 1: dot com. That's the website for more importantly traffic, sales
- 27:16Speaker 1: and profit TSP American's premier learning community for purpose driven
- 27:19Speaker 1: African American businesses and entrepreneurs. Thank your game, my friend
- 27:23Speaker 1: for coming on Money Making Conversations Masterclass. Thank you. If
- 27:27Speaker 1: you want to hear or see this interview, please go
- 27:28Speaker 1: to Money Making Conversation dot com. I'm ru Sean McDonald.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I am your host,
