- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome back to Connecting the Dots. I'm
- 0:17Alex. And I'm Morgan. Great to be with you today.
- 0:19We are coming to you live on Tuesday, November
- 0:2211th, 2025. A beautiful, crisp autumn day here
- 0:26in Sacramento. Quick look at the markets before
- 0:29we dive in Dow and Nasdaq seem to be holding
- 0:32steady a bit of green bitcoins hovering around
- 0:35well Its usual unpredictable self generally things
- 0:39look calm, which is good because today we're
- 0:41shifting focus slightly That's right. It is of
- 0:44course Veterans Day the day for reflection and
- 0:47while we usually track the minute -by -minute
- 0:49tech news Today feels like the right time to
- 0:52explore something well Deeper. Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:55We're looking at how service technology and innovation
- 0:58are really woven together. It's isn't just about,
- 1:00you know, battlefield gadgets. We're talking
- 1:01about the entire modern veteran experience, how
- 1:04tech shapes everything from service to coming
- 1:07home to health care and even how we remember.
- 1:10Exactly. It's a whole ecosystem. We're going
- 1:12to explore that today. But first, let's thank
- 1:15one of our key supporters. Today's show is brought
- 1:18to you by Old Glory. You know them, the iconic
- 1:21music and sports fan merch store. Seriously,
- 1:24if you're already thinking about holiday shopping,
- 1:25maybe getting a head start. Good idea. Old Glory
- 1:27has fantastic, officially licensed gear. If you've
- 1:31got tech fans, music lovers, sports nuts in your
- 1:33life, it's a perfect spot for gifts. Great stuff.

- 1:48Okay, so let's dig into this connection between
- 1:50Veterans Day and technology. It's a really important
- 1:54intersection in today's world. It really is.
- 1:57And maybe we start with the basics. Just a reminder,
- 1:59today honors all U .S. veterans with a special
- 2:01focus on the living. It started as Armistice
- 2:04Day, marking the end of World War I, 11th hour,
- 2:0711th day, 11th month, 1918. But the veteran we
- 2:11honor today. Well, they're operating in a vastly
- 2:13different world than that WWI soldier. That's
- 2:16the core insight, isn't it? The modern service
- 2:19member isn't just carrying a rifle. They are
- 2:21a highly trained technical operator. Absolutely.
- 2:24It's easy to miss the level of technical skill
- 2:26involved now. We're talking complex systems.
- 2:29Yeah, forget simple analog tasks. Oh, completely.
- 2:32Think cybersecurity, AI -driven tools, robotics
- 2:36like unmanned systems, autonomous logistics.
- 2:40Exactly. And complex data and communication networks,
- 2:44tactical ground systems, satellite comms. They
- 2:47need proficiency across the board. All under
- 2:49immense pressure, too. There's intense pressure.
- 2:51They're managing these integrated networks, dealing
- 2:54with end -to -end data encryption. The military
- 2:57is, in effect, one of the most high -stakes tech
- 3:00training grounds on the planet. And that training
- 3:02has direct, real -world applications after service.
- 3:05It does. Take Caleb Flemmy as a great example.
- 3:08An army vet. He was a cryptologic linguist, focused
- 3:11on signals intelligence, SIGINT. So yes, he learned
- 3:13Arabic and Russian. But the core technical job
- 3:16was signals analysis, secure data management.
- 3:19Skills that translate directly. Directly. He
- 3:22didn't just land a job. He became a senior manager
- 3:24of cybersecurity architecture in the civilian
- 3:27world. That military experience was essentially
- 3:30a four year intensive course in cutting edge
- 3:33security tech. So the big takeaway here seems
- 3:36pretty clear. The veteran community is this incredible
- 3:40pool of talent, pre -vetted, security cleared,
- 3:44disciplined. And highly technically skilled.
- 3:46But, and this seems like a big but, getting that
- 3:49talent recognized can be tough, right? That whole
- 3:51translation problem with military jargon. Oh,
- 3:54it's a huge hurdle. You've got military resumes
- 3:56filled with MOS codes, MOCs, these internal job
- 3:59titles. Things a civilian hiring manager or an
- 4:02automated system. just won't understand exactly
- 4:04a system searching for say operations supply
- 4:07chain manager might completely miss a fantastic
- 4:10candidate whose resume says logistics officer
- 4:13even if the skills are a perfect match people
- 4:15tried to fix this with databases like on it online
- 4:18yeah they started there but those are mostly
- 4:20just static list like a basic crosswalk helpful
- 4:23but limited So is AI really the decoder ring
- 4:26we need here? Is it making a difference? It seems
- 4:28to be, yeah. It's proving pretty revolutionary
- 4:30because it shifts the focus. Instead of just
- 4:33matching job titles, it looks at skills. Okay.
- 4:36How does that work in practice? Well, platforms
- 4:38like Bridge My Return use these skills first
- 4:40algorithms. They can look past the specific military
- 4:43title and identify the core transferable capabilities,
- 4:47leadership, technical maintenance skills, managing
- 4:50budgets, you name it. So the AI understands that
- 4:53logistics officer involve supply chain management.
- 4:56Precisely. And what's really interesting is that
- 4:58AI can sometimes identify and articulate skills
- 5:01the veteran might not even realize they should
- 5:03highlight for a civilian job. And there's a big
- 5:06initiative around this launching right now, timed
- 5:08for Veterans Day, from OpenAI. Yes, this is potentially
- 5:12massive. OpenAI is offering one free year of
- 5:16GPT -4, their top model, to all transitioning
- 5:18service members and veterans. Wow, one year free.
- 5:21That's significant. It really is. It basically
- 5:23democratizes high -level transition support overnight.
- 5:27No need to wait for appointments or pay for expensive
- 5:29consultants. And the practical uses are just
- 5:31enormous, I imagine. Think about it. You've got
- 5:33a 247 expert advisor in your pocket. You can
- 5:38feed it your military performance reviews those
- 5:40reports full of jargon Yeah, the ones no one
- 5:43outside the military understands right and the
- 5:46AI can help rewrite those accomplishments into
- 5:48clear corporate language You can practice mock
- 5:51interviews tailored to specific industries and
- 5:54maybe even get help with navigating the VA that
- 5:57paperwork can be dense. Exactly. Get plain language
- 6:01explanations of complex benefits and forms anytime,
- 6:05day or night. That alone could reduce so much
- 6:07stress. Which helps explain why the tech industry
- 6:09is so keen on hiring veterans. It's not just,
- 6:12you know, patriotism or good PR. It's smart business.
- 6:15It absolutely is. High ROI. Companies recognize
- 6:18they're getting incredibly valuable talent, often
- 6:20with built -in soft skills, leadership integrity,
- 6:23resilience that you just can't teach quickly.
- 6:25Plus the hard tech skills we talked about. Right.
- 6:27So you potentially reduce training costs. You
- 6:30see lower turnover because veterans often show
- 6:32higher retention rates. It's a strategic advantage.
- 6:35And that's driving these big corporate pipelines
- 6:37we hear about. Microsoft has one. Yep. The Microsoft
- 6:40Software and Systems Academy MSSA. It's a 17
- 6:45week training program and it comes with a guaranteed
- 6:48interview at Microsoft or one of their hiring
- 6:50partners. That guarantee is huge. Google's involved
- 6:53too? Google runs Skillbridge Fellowships. They're
- 6:55focusing particularly on developing generative
- 6:58AI leaders from the veteran community. And we
- 7:00should probably explain Skillbridge itself quickly.
- 7:03Good point. The DoD Skillbridge program is key
- 7:05here. It lets service members do internships
- 7:08or training with civilian companies during their
- 7:11last six months of active duty, still getting
- 7:14paid by the military. So it's like a try before
- 7:16you buy for the company. And a smoother transition,
- 7:19a warm landing. for the service member. It's
- 7:22brilliant. Amazon, specifically AWS, uses this
- 7:24model too. They have a paid military apprenticeship
- 7:27training, plus a full year of on -the -job experience.
- 7:30So the major pathway. It is. And connecting this
- 7:32back, for many veterans, especially those going
- 7:35into the defense tech sector, it's more than
- 7:38just a job. It offers a renewed purpose. Continuing
- 7:40the mission, in a way. Exactly. That continuity
- 7:44can be a powerful psychological support, helping
- 7:47combat that sense of isolation or loss of mission
- 7:50that, unfortunately, can contribute to mental
- 7:53health struggles during the transition phase.
- 7:55That need for support? For continuity? Yeah.
- 7:58That leads us directly into healthcare, doesn't
- 8:01it? And how technology is transforming the VA.
- 8:04It really is. The VA has made a massive shift
- 8:06towards being a technology -first organization.
- 8:09They talk about a digital front door to care.
- 8:12What does that look like, practically? It means
- 8:14tools like the My Health Vet Portal Veterans
- 8:16can manage prescriptions online, send secure
- 8:19messages to their care teams, access records.
- 8:21So, asynchronous communication. Very convenient.
- 8:24Very. And then there's the VA Video Connect app
- 8:27for live video appointments with their doctors
- 8:29or therapists. This is absolutely crucial for
- 8:32veterans in rural areas or those with mobility
- 8:34issues. OK, but the digital divide is real, right?
- 8:37What if a veteran doesn't have reliable internet
- 8:39or even a device like a smartphone or tablet?
- 8:42How is video telehealth equal access then? That's
- 8:45the critical question. And the VA has actually
- 8:47been quite proactive here. They view digital
- 8:49inclusion as part of health care delivery. Meaning
- 8:53they provide VA -loaned devices, internet -connected
- 8:56tablets to eligible veterans who don't have their
- 9:00own means of access. They actually give them
- 9:03tabs. For those who qualify, yes. And here's
- 9:05the really innovative part. They struck agreements
- 9:08with the major mobile carriers, AT &T, T -Mobile,
- 9:13Verizon. Okay. Using the VA video connect app
- 9:16does not count against a veteran's mobile data
- 9:19plan. Wow. So even if you have a limited data
- 9:21plan, you can still attend your telehealth appointments
- 9:24without worrying about extra charges or running
- 9:26out of data. Exactly. It makes the service truly
- 9:28accessible. That's a huge commitment to equity.
- 9:31That really is profound. All this digital interaction,
- 9:34all this data, it feeds into something massive,
- 9:37right? MHS Genesis. MHS Genesis. It's the unified
- 9:39electronic health record system for both the
- 9:41Department of Defense and the VA. Unified, so
- 9:44one record follows you from active duty right
- 9:46into veteran status. That's the goal. One single
- 9:49integrated health record for something like 9
- 9:52.5 million beneficiaries. No more lost paper
- 9:56files, no more repeating your medical history
- 9:58endlessly. The immediate benefit is clear, better
- 10:01continuity of care, but the long -term potential
- 10:04is enormous. You're creating one of the largest,
- 10:07most detailed, longitudinal health data sets
- 10:10in the world. Decades of health information,
- 10:12all linked. And that kind of data set is basically
- 10:15rocket fuel for AI and medicine. Absolutely.
- 10:18We're already seeing AI used for predictive analytics,
- 10:22especially focusing on veteran suicide prevention,
- 10:24which is still such a critical issue. How does
- 10:26AI help there? It analyzes patterns in that vast
- 10:30data set appointment history, prescriptions,
- 10:32clinical notes, potentially thousands of factors
- 10:35to identify veterans who might be at high risk
- 10:37before they reach a crisis point. Allowing for
- 10:39proactive outreach. Exactly. Targeted support
- 10:42when it's needed most. They're even exploring
- 10:43things like emotion AI, analyzing gross patterns
- 10:46on the veterans crisis line. which is 988, then
- 10:49press 1. Right. Analyzing subtle vocal cures
- 10:52for signs of acute distress to help the human
- 10:54responders better gauge the situation. It's cutting
- 10:58edge stuff. And technology isn't just analyzing
- 11:00data. It's becoming a therapeutic tool itself,
- 11:03especially for things like PTSD, where maybe
- 11:05traditional talk therapy hasn't worked, or faces
- 11:08stigma. Yes. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy,
- 11:12or VRET. The VA's Brave Mind program is a leader
- 11:16here. How does that work, putting on VR goggles?
- 11:18Pretty much. They use over 1 ,200 VR headsets
- 11:21across the VA. A therapist guides the veteran
- 11:23through a controlled, simulated environment that
- 11:26resembles the source of their trauma. Facing
- 11:28the memory in a safe space. Exactly. It's about
- 11:31confronting those memories in a controlled way,
- 11:34gradually desensitizing the automatic fear response.
- 11:37The goal is helping veterans regain control of
- 11:39those memories rather than being controlled by
- 11:42them. That's powerful. And for physical injuries,
- 11:45the tech is almost science fiction sometimes.
- 11:46It really is. Think about advanced prosthetics.
- 11:48The Luke arm, which came out of DARPA research,
- 11:50is incredible. It's neurally controlled. Meaning
- 11:53it responds to thought. Essentially, yes, it
- 11:56translates Nutter signals into complex, dexterous
- 11:58movements. It's about restoring function as naturally
- 12:02as possible. And it's not just the high -end
- 12:03research. Everyday consumer tech is playing a
- 12:06role too. Definitely. The VA's assistive technology
- 12:10program now provides what they call electronic
- 12:12aids to daily living, or EADLs. Which sounds
- 12:15technical, but... It's basically smart home tech.
- 12:18Voice assistants like Alexa or Google Home, smart
- 12:21lights, automated thermostats, things that can
- 12:24dramatically increase independence for veterans
- 12:26with limited mobility, using readily available
- 12:29consumer tech for clinical benefit. Restoring
- 12:31autonomy through simple things like turning on
- 12:33a light with your voice. Yeah. That's incredibly
- 12:36meaningful. Okay. Let's bring this full circle.
- 12:39Technology is also changing how we remember,
- 12:41how we observe Veterans Day itself. Yeah, it's
- 12:44democratizing remembrance, in a way. Making it
- 12:47more accessible. How so? Well, take Honor Everywhere
- 12:50360. It's an initiative that uses VR headsets
- 12:54to bring the experience of visiting war memorials
- 12:56in Washington D .C., the World War II Memorial,
- 12:59Vietnam Veterans Memorial, etc. directly to the
- 13:02bedside of aging or terminally ill veterans who
- 13:05can no longer travel. So they can still experience
- 13:07those tributes. Exactly. It ensures they aren't
- 13:10excluded from that national experience of remembrance
- 13:13due to physical limitations. And presuming individual
- 13:15stories too. Yes. The Library of Congress's Veterans
- 13:19History Project is crucial here. They're not
- 13:21just collecting artifacts, they're digitally
- 13:23archiving audio and video, oral histories, personal
- 13:27letters, diaries. Capturing the human voice,
- 13:30the individual experience. Precisely. Preserving
- 13:32not just the service record, but the person and
- 13:35their unique story for future generations. It
- 13:37makes history personal and permanent. And connecting
- 13:40this back to the tech industry we cover every
- 13:42day. Even their Veterans Day activities are part
- 13:44of this tech ecosystem, aren't they? They really
- 13:46are. When big tech companies run blog posts highlighting
- 13:50their veteran employees or launch social media
- 13:53campaigns, it's partly genuine appreciation,
- 13:56sure, but it's also strategic employer branding.
- 13:59How did that work? By showcasing their commitment
- 14:01to veterans and promoting their V2T veteran to
- 14:04tech hiring programs, they're actively recruiting
- 14:07the next generation of tech savvy service members
- 14:10who are thinking about transition. It fuels the
- 14:13pipeline all over again. So it's a continuous
- 14:15loop. Honoring veterans reinforces the programs
- 14:18that hire them, which brings more tech talent
- 14:20in. Exactly. A self -reinforcing cycle where
- 14:23honoring service and driving innovation go hand
- 14:25in hand. It is a remarkable cycle. Before we
- 14:28get to our final thoughts, let's quickly thank
- 14:30another great sponsor. We also want to thank
- 14:32Skoni, that's S -K -O -N -I, pronounced Skoni,
- 14:35the premium golf shoe store, for supporting today's
- 14:37show. If you're a golfer or shopping for one,
- 14:40you should definitely check out their high quality
- 14:42performance footwear. Really sharp looking shoes
- 14:44too. They are. And you can use our promo code
- 14:47SNARFUL again. S -N -A -R -F -U -L at checkout
- 14:51for 15 % off your entire purchase. You can find
- 14:54them at scony .com. Okay, so wrapping this all
- 14:57up. Today, Veterans Day, it's more than just
- 14:59a day off or parades. It really highlights this
- 15:02ongoing interplay between service, sacrifice,
- 15:06and technological advancement. Right. Technology
- 15:09isn't just part of the veteran's story. It enables
- 15:11their career transitions. It's the platform for
- 15:14their health care. It's even the medium for preserving
- 15:16their legacy. It's completely interwoven through
- 15:18the entire life cycle now. So the final thought
- 15:20for you, our listeners, might be this. Honoring
- 15:23veterans isn't solely about remembrance. It's
- 15:26also about continued action and investment in
- 15:28the systems that support them. That point about
- 15:30the VA providing devices and covering data charges
- 15:33for telehealth, that shows a fundamental understanding
- 15:36that digital access is healthcare access now.
- 15:38Exactly. So maybe the provocative thought is
- 15:41that continued robust investment in these integrated
- 15:45digital systems for transition support for healthcare
- 15:48like MHS Genesis for assistive tech isn't just
- 15:51government spending. It's a reflection of national
- 15:54values and it yields tangible benefits both human
- 15:57and economic far into the future. Absolutely.
- 16:00Just think about the medical insights we'll gain
- 16:03from analyzing that MHS Genesis data over the
- 16:05next 20 -30 years. It could revolutionize public
- 16:08health for everyone. Powerful stuff indeed. A
- 16:11lot to reflect on this November 11th. Thank you
- 16:13for joining us for this special focus on connecting
- 16:15the dots. We hope it gave you some new perspectives.
