- 2:15Speaker 1: My next guests are Group. There are three guys. They're
- 2:18Speaker 1: the Ghost Brothers, Daylyn Spratt, Jouanne Miss Joanne Mass and

- 2:26Speaker 1: six years traveling around the country as a team chasing ghosts.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You hear what I'm saying, ghosts Together. Now, the Ghost
- 2:32Speaker 1: Brothers are coming together to bring you the first paranormal
- 2:35Speaker 1: podcast from Discovery Plus called Urban Legends with the Ghost Brothers,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which launched this mother as well. So we're catching it
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the process because it's only gonna be ten episodes.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Daylyn started this whole paranormal adventure after he had dreamed
- 2:50Speaker 1: that he had dreamed about it and he should be
- 2:52Speaker 1: exploring the unknown. So he convinced Juan that they should
- 2:56Speaker 1: hunt ghost Now. I don't know how you wake a
- 2:58Speaker 1: brother up and convey another black man convinced another black
- 3:01Speaker 1: man they should be hunting ghosts. So you know, right there,
- 3:04Speaker 1: there's some different black friends. They're different black men. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 1: one brother he said yeah. But first of all, let's
- 3:09Speaker 1: he said yeah. Then they brought in another black dude
- 3:11Speaker 1: named Marcus. He said yeah too. On the show today,
- 3:14Speaker 1: they would talk about the craziest myth and legends with
- 3:17Speaker 1: the help of top paranormal investigative celebrities and friends. Please
- 3:20Speaker 1: welcome to Money Making Conversations. The host of Urban Legends
- 3:23Speaker 1: with the Ghost Brothers podcast Thinglas Spratt, Joan miss and
- 3:27Speaker 1: Marcus Harvey. How you doing, fellas man less? You know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: rarely do I mess up an intro like that, man,
- 3:34Speaker 1: So I'm just excited to get to you guys, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: especially off air when Marcus told me he does stand
- 3:40Speaker 1: up comedy. Is that true, Marcus, Hey, google it. It's
- 3:45Speaker 1: very easy to google. Okay, just daylad just pushed back
- 3:50Speaker 1: when I said that day isn't for real. Listen, listen, man,
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know follow Marcus all over the country going to
- 3:56Speaker 1: his stand up shows. Man, I'll tell you he kills them.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He kills it. And that's why we're good at the
- 4:02Speaker 1: paranormal because I'm very I'm very solident knowing how to
- 4:05Speaker 1: find people after I kill him. Oh my god. Okay,
- 4:11Speaker 1: let me get off of this ability right now. What
- 4:16Speaker 1: your Dylan is your is your jersey? That says so HBCU.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's the only thing that's credibility right now. After you
- 4:22Speaker 1: just backed up Marcus Jawan, you want to talk on
- 4:24Speaker 1: this before we move on about to standard commented career.
- 4:28Speaker 1: He's the next Day of Chappelle. Man, Listen, he is
- 4:30Speaker 1: the next Marcus Harvey, I'm telling you right now, my
- 4:33Speaker 1: brother ain't out here explaining to himself because it's true.
- 4:36Speaker 1: It's so his confidence is so silent. I've heard him.
- 4:40Speaker 1: He's killing him with these jokes. Okay, cool, now, I
- 4:43Speaker 1: will admit this fellas. You know, it's a trio. You guys.
- 4:46Speaker 1: You know all they all met on the campus of
- 4:49Speaker 1: Clark Atlanta University. Marcus couldn't have Jiwan and Dylan there
- 4:53Speaker 1: was attending school. They attended school so long that they pledged,
- 4:56Speaker 1: or I would say the great fraternity, consider the all
- 4:59Speaker 1: black fraternity, these great calf Alpha side. You know you
- 5:02Speaker 1: got the Alphas. I think, of course, I remember making
- 5:05Speaker 1: side fire as well. I got the news that we're
- 5:09Speaker 1: only talking about Queues and Cappus right now. The cap
- 5:13Speaker 1: has got are going on because they got two brothers
- 5:15Speaker 1: starring on the television show and discovery for us along
- 5:18Speaker 1: with Marcus. Now, Marcus, I'm a part of the Cutters fraternity.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I never say again again. Stop all that. You know.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I'm about to give you some some humor you're talking
- 5:28Speaker 1: about because if you watch the series, the Ghost Brothers series,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the comedy relief always comes from you. Market I give
- 5:34Speaker 1: you blessings on that. Brother. You are very entertaining and
- 5:37Speaker 1: very funny in this series. Now, when I start breaking
- 5:40Speaker 1: down characters, the analytical one always seems to be dayling
- 5:45Speaker 1: your character and you wa. You sit back there like
- 5:48Speaker 1: you like the world World War War slow down type? Brother?
- 5:51Speaker 1: Am I right? And describing your personalities? I think that's
- 5:55Speaker 1: pretty spot on, that spot on. I mean, if you
- 5:59Speaker 1: if you wanted something up in five words. Yeah, but
- 6:02Speaker 1: since we on this podcast and we get to use many,
- 6:04Speaker 1: many words, we can give you a little bit more. Okay, okay, okay,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I apologize. I'll just tell from my perspective. Ghost Brothers. Okay, yeah, Marcus,
- 6:14Speaker 1: describe your character on the show. Describe your character on
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Ghost Brothers series. Marcus, Okay, I'll do this. I'll
- 6:21Speaker 1: do you one better. I'll describe Juwan Jowan's approach to it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Juan brings um daring this to our show. He brings
- 6:30Speaker 1: darinness to our investigations. He's never scared, but he does
- 6:34Speaker 1: get startled, which is two different things. You know what
- 6:37Speaker 1: I'm saying. It's two different things. He just always is
- 6:40Speaker 1: on alert so he can get started. He's always ready
- 6:43Speaker 1: for something, but he's always ready to actually go into
- 6:46Speaker 1: whatever we need to go into. Uh. Typically he's always
- 6:50Speaker 1: down to go investigate. I mean this man probably go
- 6:53Speaker 1: to the to the edge of hill to investigate something,
- 6:57Speaker 1: to see something really happened, and and still keep us
- 6:59Speaker 1: through and clean because he just don't do man. So,
- 7:02Speaker 1: I mean, that's what you want brings to the show.
- 7:04Speaker 1: You know, he's intelligent, he asked great questions, he's very thorough.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He just dope. So Jawan, give me feedback on Marcus Man.
- 7:15Speaker 1: He didn't lie, he didn't lie. I'll tell you that
- 7:17Speaker 1: my man is gonna tell the truth and shame the devil.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That's how Marcus be investigating. He's consistent in his uh,
- 7:24Speaker 1: in his approach to the paranormal. Um, he's always there
- 7:27Speaker 1: to offer uh that comedy relief as you said. But
- 7:31Speaker 1: like Marcus is is like we we all have our names, right,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I'm the paranormal poppy. Dylan is the bad boy of
- 7:38Speaker 1: paranormal and Marcus is the soul brother, right Like he's
- 7:41Speaker 1: the one that everybody kind of gravitates towards. He brings
- 7:44Speaker 1: his comfort and and and comedy that that you need
- 7:47Speaker 1: in these particular moments. Uh. And he's never afraid to
- 7:52Speaker 1: be vulnerable. And he holds that that hat very well,
- 7:55Speaker 1: very well. Now now Dayla, tell me about your character
- 7:58Speaker 1: on the show. The ghost part of the series. Be
- 8:00Speaker 1: we going into the podcast, right, So, I'm what they
- 8:03Speaker 1: call the sex symbol of the group. I believe that.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I believe every tree, every trio needs one. And that's
- 8:09Speaker 1: from the camera. Boy, Hey, you know what you want
- 8:17Speaker 1: When you start lying, you get close, you get close,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you start lying. You ever know that you start lying,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you get real close to people. You see lying? Man,
- 8:27Speaker 1: that's number one sad when people started they get real close,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you go, hey, man, back off, back off, brother, we
- 8:32Speaker 1: got to be that close. He saw left it out.
- 8:34Speaker 1: The bio left it out like I'm gonna go ahead,
- 8:37Speaker 1: chake that. I'm gonna be the sex symple. Go. That's
- 8:44Speaker 1: what happens when you chase too many ghosts. I'm saying,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you got that stuff. You know, some ghost has been
- 8:49Speaker 1: talking to you in the wrong ear. You see, you're sexy.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Come into this room, You're sexy. So some people called
- 8:58Speaker 1: it to Beyonce of the group. I'm just trying to say,
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm killing I'm gonna be killing killing Kelly today I'm
- 9:12Speaker 1: Kelly today. I love it. Now I'm going back to Jawan.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Now that those names you said, you know, you said
- 9:19Speaker 1: soul brother, you said he's the paring On Poppy and
- 9:24Speaker 1: who is Daylan? The what do you wipe it off with? Baby?
- 9:34Speaker 1: The bad? This is the this is the part. This
- 9:38Speaker 1: the part that gonna disappoint me in the podcast because
- 9:41Speaker 1: people don't get to see y'all crazy. But see, I
- 9:44Speaker 1: love to see because see when I watched the show
- 9:47Speaker 1: that's I enjoyed. I was dead on because what you said,
- 9:51Speaker 1: use short description. I was dead on about each one
- 9:54Speaker 1: of y'all. You the common relieve, uh, Captain Sexy up there.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know he always won't be up front, always going
- 10:00Speaker 1: to go in the house real quick and you wanna
- 10:02Speaker 1: always go, hey, man, hold up now, but we got
- 10:04Speaker 1: the facts who died in there? Who he always wants
- 10:08Speaker 1: to know, the movement, you know, Yeah, they're the one.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Just open the door, walk in. He just want what's
- 10:13Speaker 1: going on, y'all? Hold up, brother, we gotta know what
- 10:20Speaker 1: what's happening on the other side of the door. Marcus,
- 10:23Speaker 1: he outside, go we don't have to go in. I'm
- 10:28Speaker 1: already I'm going through the window at that right, you're
- 10:31Speaker 1: on the floor, he said, some tell us about the
- 10:35Speaker 1: ghost Busters. Y'all, If they listen to Marcus, there would
- 10:38Speaker 1: be no serious because Marcus don't ever want to go
- 10:41Speaker 1: in the house. Marcus, he wants to investigate outside. He
- 10:46Speaker 1: wouldn't investigate our right, So so they don't listen to
- 10:50Speaker 1: Marcus when they start putting together the show. Not now
- 10:54Speaker 1: they let get you killed. The Dayland will get you
- 10:56Speaker 1: killed and you don't even know why you did. And
- 10:59Speaker 1: so well we all know that arrived. I like that.
- 11:02Speaker 1: But so now we moved on to the whole new
- 11:05Speaker 1: platform and this podcast successful series. Uh, three black men
- 11:13Speaker 1: chasing ghosts already, that's a reach, you know in the
- 11:17Speaker 1: world of reality in the black community. You know, white
- 11:20Speaker 1: both have been changing ghosts for years. You know that
- 11:22Speaker 1: Black people, you know, we knew about voodoo, we know
- 11:25Speaker 1: about Luigi Board, but we never really admitted to ghosts.
- 11:29Speaker 1: How did y'all break that wall? And I can go
- 11:33Speaker 1: with each one you guys going starwards, Juan, how did
- 11:36Speaker 1: you break that wall? Because Dayla came with the idea
- 11:39Speaker 1: that y'all could be successful, and y'all are very successful
- 11:43Speaker 1: in this paranormal format. Yeah, honestly, we just we I
- 11:50Speaker 1: think we leaned on the fact that we were ignorant,
- 11:53Speaker 1: so like we really didn't know what we were getting into,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And I think that allowed
- 11:59Speaker 1: us to just continue through this journey and try out
- 12:01Speaker 1: new things and then you learn along the way they're like, yo,
- 12:03Speaker 1: you might not want to be playing with this, right.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I think that like our like ignorance was bliss in
- 12:09Speaker 1: that moment and it and it worked out for us.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I also think that we um utilize each other in
- 12:15Speaker 1: our relationships. Like I think we're extremely comfortable with each other,
- 12:19Speaker 1: and we were already brothers, so it's easy for us
- 12:21Speaker 1: to kind of be vulnerable in particular moments that you know,
- 12:24Speaker 1: we weren't used to, so that allowed us to kind
- 12:28Speaker 1: of like high the fact that we were kind of
- 12:31Speaker 1: fearful or not knowing what we were doing. Absolutely now now, Dylan,
- 12:36Speaker 1: the whole concept of ten episodes and each episode is
- 12:41Speaker 1: tied to an urban legend or myth what built that
- 12:45Speaker 1: concept out, which which is totally different from what you
- 12:49Speaker 1: guys are doing on your series, But I love it.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I love the fact that you're focused on one per episode.
- 12:55Speaker 1: It's not all over the place, so when people come
- 12:57Speaker 1: to the table, it's set up and you get people
- 13:00Speaker 1: engage with the way you guys do your research and
- 13:04Speaker 1: how you interview people, y'all really do do y'all do
- 13:06Speaker 1: a fantastic job or the producers as well. I don't
- 13:09Speaker 1: want to give you guys credit because you gotta have
- 13:11Speaker 1: a team to get there of setting up their story
- 13:14Speaker 1: and making it very entertaining. Talk about the whole process
- 13:17Speaker 1: with your podcast. Yeah, man, it it's it's a different
- 13:21Speaker 1: form of media with it just being just us talking,
- 13:24Speaker 1: but it's dope because it's still in the same vein.
- 13:26Speaker 1: So with us hunting ghosts, we literally go all over
- 13:29Speaker 1: the country from state to state, chasing all these parents
- 13:32Speaker 1: on the stories. But in doing so, we realize that
- 13:35Speaker 1: literally every state has its own specific urban legend, which
- 13:39Speaker 1: is cool, which is totally different from your typical ghost stories,
- 13:43Speaker 1: right because now we're breaking into the ideas of things
- 13:46Speaker 1: like Chooper Cabra or the cry Baby Bridge, or even
- 13:50Speaker 1: like Jelly the New Jersey Devil or Candy Man, like
- 13:56Speaker 1: literally all these wild claims that have been circulating around
- 13:59Speaker 1: the country for years. We get to seriously just to explore,
- 14:04Speaker 1: but from the comfort of a studio. It ain't no
- 14:07Speaker 1: more late nights, ain't no more investigating on the houses,
- 14:12Speaker 1: ain't no more meal, dude, they no more they know
- 14:14Speaker 1: Count Danderus ain't none of that. It's it's literally just
- 14:17Speaker 1: us exploring, like you said, all these dope things that
- 14:20Speaker 1: we all heard about in our past, you know, bloody
- 14:24Speaker 1: like you said, bloody Mary. And then we've had so
- 14:26Speaker 1: many dope guests who come on. We have Roy Wood Jr.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Roy Woods Jr. Who he's going to be appearing on
- 14:32Speaker 1: one of the podcasts. We have several other dope are
- 14:35Speaker 1: guests who are, you know, paranormal experts. Just a comedian
- 14:40Speaker 1: you tell me he's paranormal it Nah, he has some experiences.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Because what we do is we actually take calls from
- 14:46Speaker 1: all of our fans and people who have actually had
- 14:48Speaker 1: experience in some of these things, and they call us,
- 14:51Speaker 1: call in and tell us about their experiences, and we
- 14:53Speaker 1: just pretty much just review it and just really get
- 14:55Speaker 1: deep down into these types of like uh, dope dope legends. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 1: these are legends, you know. And then just to add
- 15:03Speaker 1: with Juana was saying, Um, I think like you said, um,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I would say that to add another word, I would add,
- 15:08Speaker 1: we were very curious, um and you know what this
- 15:13Speaker 1: could be because not only do we look at things
- 15:15Speaker 1: just you know, for face value, but we also look
- 15:17Speaker 1: at the opportunity to break into something that nobody's ever
- 15:20Speaker 1: done before, whether and because we've never even done it before,
- 15:23Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So knowing that we were
- 15:25Speaker 1: the only ones in the field who are African Americans
- 15:28Speaker 1: who were seeing it from our perspective, who were going
- 15:31Speaker 1: to bring the type of energy that we were gonna
- 15:32Speaker 1: bring it, we knew that though you know, everybody in
- 15:35Speaker 1: that field was Caucasian, you know, we could bring a
- 15:38Speaker 1: different flavor and and everybody's everybody if every race goes
- 15:43Speaker 1: to the other side, so it's not excluded just to
- 15:45Speaker 1: you know, the Caucasian, right. So that's why we kind
- 15:47Speaker 1: of I think you've had our found our dopest rhythm,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. We'll be right back with
- 15:51Speaker 1: more money making conversation with the stars of the Discovery
- 15:54Speaker 1: Plus series Ghost Brothers. It's finally here, the season of
- 15:59Speaker 1: selling ration. And no matter how you celebrate with family
- 16:02Speaker 1: and friends, whether you're preparing for Reis Magos or Karamu

- 18:25Speaker 1: Welcome back to money making Conversations as I continue my
- 18:28Speaker 1: conversation with the stars of the Discovery Plus series Ghost
- 18:32Speaker 1: Brothers Now Daylan, this was your idea from job from
- 18:36Speaker 1: the standpoint of just a conception, you know, saying, man,
- 18:39Speaker 1: I feel this is a reality, but not, you know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: because it can easily become a joke. And I'm just
- 18:45Speaker 1: gonna tell everybody it's a fantastically produced series. I enjoy
- 18:50Speaker 1: it is coming from their point of view. And when
- 18:54Speaker 1: I see that point of view, because I really do
- 18:56Speaker 1: believe Marcus is scared. It's a scaredy cat. I really
- 19:00Speaker 1: do believe he don't want to go in the house
- 19:02Speaker 1: what I'm saying. And he complains about the cold, he
- 19:06Speaker 1: complains about doing it at night, he complains about everything.
- 19:09Speaker 1: But it's all the reality of how you would think.
- 19:11Speaker 1: That's why I like the serious because see, I don't
- 19:13Speaker 1: tell people if you're saying something I'm thinking, then guess
- 19:16Speaker 1: what you got me? And so so Marcus is that
- 19:19Speaker 1: one guy that kind of like throws all that logic
- 19:23Speaker 1: into the such situation. Did you have, Daylon, He's there,
- 19:27Speaker 1: he said, intuitive guy he's that invest in your why
- 19:29Speaker 1: we He wants to get to the truth. But Jawad's
- 19:33Speaker 1: character is always tied to if you're gonna get you
- 19:35Speaker 1: the truth, let's apply facts to it. Let's just some
- 19:38Speaker 1: barge into the situation without understanding the full rapifications of
- 19:42Speaker 1: the journey. Now Daylyn with me saying all that, was
- 19:46Speaker 1: that the perspective that you wanted the serious to be about,
- 19:49Speaker 1: or just developed that way, you know what, It's a
- 19:51Speaker 1: little bit of both, to be honest, because we're genuinely
- 19:55Speaker 1: all three really close friends. It's not like most reality
- 19:59Speaker 1: television that are scripted and you bring it together a
- 20:02Speaker 1: cast of people and you force these relationships. So we've
- 20:06Speaker 1: been hanging around together for twenty years, so we each
- 20:09Speaker 1: have our own distinct personalities, which you know, in effect
- 20:12Speaker 1: makes us friends. So we kind of already fall into
- 20:15Speaker 1: those separate categories just in our day to day friendships. Anyway,
- 20:18Speaker 1: and when it was time to cast the show and
- 20:20Speaker 1: put the show together, you know what I mean, those friendships,
- 20:23Speaker 1: those levels of relationships just shine through with the cast,
- 20:26Speaker 1: like we didn't even have to interview any more people,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Like it was literally just us three and everybody who
- 20:31Speaker 1: was like, oh well, Marcus is funny, you know, Dylan
- 20:34Speaker 1: is daring, and ju One has that level of factual
- 20:37Speaker 1: intelligence that we want and like we care about. It
- 20:40Speaker 1: was like we all had the same you know, we
- 20:42Speaker 1: have those three different personalities. And if you look at
- 20:45Speaker 1: reality TV, like a lot of reality shows, it's all
- 20:49Speaker 1: the same type of personality archetypes. It's only like ten
- 20:53Speaker 1: or eleven that make it onto reality TV, and you
- 20:56Speaker 1: just so happen, you know, we just so happen to
- 20:58Speaker 1: fall into three of those category. Story Now, it's interesting
- 21:02Speaker 1: thing because I know that you know, Marcus gave me
- 21:05Speaker 1: the cliff Notes version of your podcast. You know, he
- 21:08Speaker 1: threw out and celebrities and stopped, you know, didn't even
- 21:12Speaker 1: let me interview nobody. You know, that's how he always does.
- 21:15Speaker 1: He just jumps out and start talking. You know this,
- 21:18Speaker 1: this whole podcast interview been over with five minutes messing
- 21:21Speaker 1: with Marcus. You know, he threw out one celebrity, says
- 21:23Speaker 1: a whole bunch of more. Okay, we're gonna be bathering.
- 21:26Speaker 1: We're gonna go all over. You know, we're gonna do
- 21:28Speaker 1: the Brooklyn, We're gonna do the New Jersey Devil. That's
- 21:30Speaker 1: it watch listen, so let me slow it down. Mr
- 21:34Speaker 1: Marcus allowed me to interview y'all. Okay, now, Joan, how
- 21:41Speaker 1: did y'all come up with these ten different podcasts myths?
- 21:47Speaker 1: So the ten it started with the honestly, we knew
- 21:51Speaker 1: about a few of them, right, Like there's all there's
- 21:53Speaker 1: there's something that are more notorious than others like candy Man.
- 21:58Speaker 1: You have Bloody Mary, uh Trooper, Cobra, Craybaby Bridge, but
- 22:03Speaker 1: then you have others like slender Man, moth Man that
- 22:07Speaker 1: you we had to scour the internet and ask people
- 22:11Speaker 1: like we we asked people to give us their interesting
- 22:15Speaker 1: encounters with urban legends, right, and we allow them to
- 22:17Speaker 1: be guests on the show. And then like we have
- 22:19Speaker 1: our honest feedback from those particular subject matters. So we
- 22:23Speaker 1: reached out to you know, the paranormal community and and
- 22:27Speaker 1: and found some new information and did our research to
- 22:30Speaker 1: kind of get some of these other these broad topics
- 22:33Speaker 1: because I mean, in my honest opinion, I didn't know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: Like there's a couple that I didn't know, right, and
- 22:37Speaker 1: I had to really learn. I'm talking to the Ghost
- 22:40Speaker 1: Brothers as Dalen, Joan and Marcus that have new podcast
- 22:43Speaker 1: series that will have just ten episodes to talk about
- 22:46Speaker 1: stories and what's exciting about the scary aspect of what
- 22:49Speaker 1: listeners want to hear when it comes to this whole
- 22:52Speaker 1: ghost Paranora world. That the episodes are available on apples, Spotify,
- 22:56Speaker 1: or whether you can get your podcasts now. Like I said,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I know about Candy Man, So I'm not gonna claim
- 23:02Speaker 1: to be an expert, but I always knew about Candy Man.
- 23:04Speaker 1: In fact, the movie just came out and was number
- 23:06Speaker 1: one at the box office. But I always felt like
- 23:10Speaker 1: I knew. You know, the Luigi board I grew up,
- 23:12Speaker 1: you know, put your hands and fingers on the Wegia
- 23:14Speaker 1: board and it's supposed to take you to each letter.
- 23:17Speaker 1: And I'm at one time we said a where's our daddy?
- 23:20Speaker 1: You know it's bearer board, black folks, that the Wegia board.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm telling my fam we have no money, but we
- 23:36Speaker 1: had that Wegia board. Okay. And so so when you
- 23:40Speaker 1: talk about myths the Candy Man, you know, saying his name,
- 23:45Speaker 1: isn't that the terror in it is or the fear
- 23:49Speaker 1: is that it could actually happen? You know, you know
- 23:53Speaker 1: it isn't that the real fear of Dayla that you know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I don't believe, but I'm not crazy enough to find
- 23:59Speaker 1: if it's really gonna happen. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And that's
- 24:03Speaker 1: exactly the like the whole heartedly true. Anytime there's horror involved,
- 24:08Speaker 1: it's that small element of realism that drives people over
- 24:12Speaker 1: the edge. And I think that's when a lot of
- 24:14Speaker 1: like horror and scary paranormal stuff missed these days. That's
- 24:18Speaker 1: the difference from like your old movies like Candy Man,
- 24:21Speaker 1: or It's or like You and Me, all those great
- 24:25Speaker 1: Jason's and there was always that small level of like
- 24:30Speaker 1: realism or like or could it be couldn't this actually
- 24:33Speaker 1: happen that actually pushes people over the edge. And yeah,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I think we still live in that same level of curiosity,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and that's what works. I'll be a changeing man. Fears,
- 24:43Speaker 1: fear and darkness is like you don't want them to
- 24:46Speaker 1: enter the room. At the same time, you know, you
- 24:48Speaker 1: don't want to look under your bed, you know what
- 24:50Speaker 1: I'm saying, because somebody might look up at you, look
- 24:53Speaker 1: at you with eyeball. You want to look out of
- 24:54Speaker 1: your bench, try looking back at you. You know you
- 24:57Speaker 1: don't want to look in the car to your bedroom
- 24:59Speaker 1: and it's just dark, you know what I'm saying, And
- 25:01Speaker 1: you don't have no blanket you have. The blanket is
- 25:04Speaker 1: like the ultimate protector when you're afraid. You know itally
- 25:08Speaker 1: proven on Mars. Talk to us about that man, because
- 25:11Speaker 1: I know m T did a study on blanket protection
- 25:16Speaker 1: um duringing paranormal. It's a whole study. You guys gotta
- 25:20Speaker 1: go see it. Go google it's hey. I'm telling you
- 25:23Speaker 1: rule though, because the rule, the rule, what that is,
- 25:25Speaker 1: as long as all of your body is covered, like no,
- 25:28Speaker 1: you can't have any limbs exposed, no, told, But you
- 25:31Speaker 1: can have your head. Don't you want to write your
- 25:33Speaker 1: head right? No? No, no, everything that's to that's like
- 25:37Speaker 1: next level because you gotta be able to move swiftly,
- 25:40Speaker 1: you know what I mean. You can your head exposed
- 25:43Speaker 1: to see something, but you gotta pull it back over
- 25:44Speaker 1: your head if you don't want to get I can
- 25:46Speaker 1: I can tell you I didn't. I can tell you
- 25:47Speaker 1: I didn't read the study because the study said if
- 25:49Speaker 1: you expose your head, yeah, and that's what it literally
- 25:52Speaker 1: said that on the second paget. That's what that's what
- 25:56Speaker 1: they problem is the only first page readings. Y'all cliffs
- 26:00Speaker 1: to pot this. You knew what I read that you
- 26:01Speaker 1: want to read, that you want to read, you want detail. Okay,
- 26:06Speaker 1: see he lying Now he's gonna government trying to shut
- 26:12Speaker 1: me down. Knowledge, he trying to put me off conation.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I'm back with you, baby. I love it. You know
- 26:21Speaker 1: I would tell y'all something about me, man, is that
- 26:24Speaker 1: I love scary movies. I love them, but you know
- 26:29Speaker 1: I am a scaredy cat. Okay, when a good scary
- 26:33Speaker 1: movie come on, I will leave the lights one in
- 26:35Speaker 1: the house. I'm not gonna lie to you. When a
- 26:38Speaker 1: good scary movie hit me, right, I will sleep with
- 26:41Speaker 1: that blanket covered. Now I do expose the head now,
- 26:45Speaker 1: but everything that is I will not leave you were
- 26:49Speaker 1: there like you over there, like waffle house swelling covered.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I'm just telling you. See see See that's why y'all
- 26:55Speaker 1: come on the show, because I'll be honest about it.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm afraid. See what y'all do attracts me because of
- 27:00Speaker 1: the fact that I I want to say I don't believe,
- 27:04Speaker 1: but I do believe. That's what that ten episode podcast.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I think it's brilliant because you're gonna allow people to
- 27:10Speaker 1: dive into each one of their fears, and then they're
- 27:13Speaker 1: gonna learn some more fears that they didn't even know about.
- 27:17Speaker 1: The next thing, you know, there's another series of ten y'all,
- 27:20Speaker 1: just cante man. You ain't gonna stop. We ain't gonna stop.
- 27:24Speaker 1: You can't stop, can't stop, won't stop. Take that. Get down?
- 27:29Speaker 1: We get down good. So so, so what's next for
- 27:32Speaker 1: the Ghost Brothers? You know, I know each one of
- 27:34Speaker 1: you guys, you do this project together, but I know
- 27:36Speaker 1: you've got individual projects. Start with what you want, what
- 27:38Speaker 1: you got working on the table. Brother. I got a
- 27:41Speaker 1: restaurant in Miami. Um yeah, yeah, it's on South Beach
- 27:48Speaker 1: thirteenth in Washington. We opened the year of So now
- 27:53Speaker 1: we're just kind of getting back rolling because we were right.
- 27:56Speaker 1: We were kind of hard. But now I'll be out
- 27:59Speaker 1: be in my mean January eighteen through the twenty for
- 28:02Speaker 1: the NAPTI, so I make at a point of reach
- 28:05Speaker 1: out and touch you just so I can drop by.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I'll be down there for three days for National National
- 28:09Speaker 1: Association Program Television Executive. I'll be down there for three days.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So your restaurant, what's your name of it? It's called
- 28:15Speaker 1: Heroes stripping Chicken. Uh, it's a fast, casual donning experience. Um,
- 28:23Speaker 1: if you never heard of Herolds of staying from Chicago,
- 28:25Speaker 1: as I live in Chicago five years, I know about
- 28:28Speaker 1: Harold Chicken. You can stop, man, I'm a foodie dude.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Not now, Dayla, what's happened in your world? I know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: Dayla got my full five project. He can't stay, he
- 28:35Speaker 1: can't he can't sit this but down for nothing now? So, uh,
- 28:41Speaker 1: what's actually really dope? The Ghost Brothers are launching something
- 28:44Speaker 1: in the next two to three weeks. So people always
- 28:47Speaker 1: ask us, like, what is it like traveling on the
- 28:49Speaker 1: road when we're filming our show? Can we tell people
- 28:52Speaker 1: it's a lot of late nights and a lot of
- 28:54Speaker 1: early mornings. And in doing so, man, anytime we get
- 28:57Speaker 1: out from these investigations, we always go get something to eat. Right.
- 29:00Speaker 1: We've literally had breakfasted all over this country and like so,
- 29:05Speaker 1: we've had waffles and pancakes everywhere. So we thought it
- 29:09Speaker 1: would be only befitting if we dropped our own gourmet
- 29:12Speaker 1: waffle and pancake mix. So we have the Bros Gourmet,
- 29:15Speaker 1: which is actually lunch. In about three weeks with our
- 29:19Speaker 1: first waffle and pancake mixes, pumpkin spice for the holidays.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But yeah, right after that, we come to you with
- 29:26Speaker 1: red velvet and uh yeah, okay, you know, because you know,
- 29:29Speaker 1: I got a show called Rushange Kitchen. You know, it's
- 29:31Speaker 1: all the other part of my life is that I'm
- 29:33Speaker 1: award winning baker. So give me some of that and
- 29:36Speaker 1: I would put it on my social media every Tuesday
- 29:38Speaker 1: and Friday, I post, I post some recipes. You can
- 29:42Speaker 1: look at my recipe right there. I did, uh land
- 29:44Speaker 1: the legs. They sent me free butter so I can
- 29:46Speaker 1: make their biscuits all that stuff. I can free stuff
- 29:49Speaker 1: all the time for my did that perfect? I'm seriously like,
- 29:52Speaker 1: I just did some all some Punkin donuts that I
- 29:55Speaker 1: did and I posted. It's like it's like a hidden
- 29:59Speaker 1: flavor because a lot of black people here. Punking. There's
- 30:02Speaker 1: folks Parking man is outstanding, dude, because they're so used
- 30:06Speaker 1: to sweet potato pies, you know, but Punkin that's a
- 30:09Speaker 1: great pancake. Parking Pancakes outstanding. Now. I always closed the
- 30:13Speaker 1: show with the headline here, Marcus, what's happening. What's happening?
- 30:16Speaker 1: The headline? Hey man, listen I want when you cook
- 30:20Speaker 1: them pancakes, I want to be there because I want
- 30:23Speaker 1: to get one of them plumpy pick. Because you talked
- 30:24Speaker 1: about the listen, we got a lot going on. Rosecore

- 30:40Speaker 1: We have a barbershop full of like amazing groomers, massage therapists.
- 30:46Speaker 1: We have a therapist, mental therapist on deck to my brother,

- 30:53Speaker 1: He's also he took his talents over to us. Uh. So, man,
- 30:56Speaker 1: we're just really trying to do some great things to
- 30:58Speaker 1: the community. We're gonna be do some giveaways or some
- 31:01Speaker 1: haircuts for the holidays and so yeah, man, just tap in, man,
- 31:06Speaker 1: and just keep keep keep posting, keep praying for the
- 31:08Speaker 1: ghost bros. Man, we were out here trying to do
- 31:10Speaker 1: great things for the community. We're trying to, you know,
- 31:13Speaker 1: raise our beautiful kids. You know, Juwan, you're on the
- 31:17Speaker 1: clock dot because they only got that baby gorgeous and no,
- 31:22Speaker 1: we don't let them put that tresh pressure on you.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Don't do like that, bro, No, no, non't take your time.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But we're talking about when you do it, it better

- 31:32Speaker 1: as looking. Man. Let's he really goes ugly. It's gonna
- 31:37Speaker 1: be hard now to have a little good looking time

- 32:24Speaker 1: ugliness on the child that you hadn't had yet. No, no,
- 32:27Speaker 1: we misinterpreted. I'm just saying there's pressure. If there is
- 32:31Speaker 1: an ugly baby, the ugly baby won't be as close

- 35:29Speaker 1: a long time, I've been wanting to talk to this
- 35:31Speaker 1: brother again. Reggie rock Bythewood, How are you doing, my friend,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I'm really really great. Thank you thanks for having me.
- 35:37Speaker 1: But first of all, man um, you know I'm a
- 35:40Speaker 1: fan of Apple Plus, so I watched Ted Lasso ap
- 35:44Speaker 1: Apple TV Plus Brother, Apple TV Plus, Apple TV Plus.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I apologize Apple TV Plus. Let me get this straight
- 35:50Speaker 1: TV Plus because you know when when you pay your
- 35:52Speaker 1: money and I just see the Apple Plus. But Apple
- 35:56Speaker 1: TV Plus okay? And um, this series? What brought it about?
- 36:01Speaker 1: And uh? And what inspired you to do this series?
- 36:03Speaker 1: I know Kevin Durant involved, which give us a whole
- 36:06Speaker 1: lot of credibility to the background and the relations of
- 36:09Speaker 1: the the authenticity for the series. But how did you
- 36:12Speaker 1: get involved? Ritchie Um? So I got a call from
- 36:17Speaker 1: um Imagine Entertainment, which is a company that that that
- 36:21Speaker 1: Brian runs with Ron Howard a producing their name. Francy
- 36:24Speaker 1: Calfol called me up and and and let me know
- 36:28Speaker 1: that Brian and k D had a meeting and they
- 36:32Speaker 1: talked about doing a series focus on or inspired by
- 36:37Speaker 1: his youth basketball days. So they called me asked me
- 36:40Speaker 1: to meet with him. I flew out At that time
- 36:43Speaker 1: k D was in was in um it was in
- 36:46Speaker 1: Golden State, you know. So I flew out to Oakland
- 36:49Speaker 1: and met with him, and you know, I didn't really
- 36:53Speaker 1: know what to what to to think, you know what,
- 36:56Speaker 1: I like the guy? Would I not? But it was
- 36:59Speaker 1: a really kind of inspiring conversation and and he was
- 37:05Speaker 1: just very open and shared um a lot of his
- 37:09Speaker 1: experiences with me, and I really just started to see
- 37:12Speaker 1: this canvas, if you will, that would allow me to
- 37:17Speaker 1: um take elements of his life and bringing other elements, um,
- 37:25Speaker 1: some elements from my life, from my kids and sort
- 37:29Speaker 1: of things we pulled into research and just just tell
- 37:32Speaker 1: a story that we felt could be really meaningful, um,
- 37:36Speaker 1: A story about not just basketball, but growing up in
- 37:41Speaker 1: America or teen life in America, which is a brilliant
- 37:45Speaker 1: portory by the actors that you brought into this, which
- 37:48Speaker 1: really which were in the music that plays a major
- 37:52Speaker 1: role in what you're doing here. Now let's talk about
- 37:55Speaker 1: the young star Isaiah Isaiah, he'll correctly plays James Carson. Now,
- 38:01Speaker 1: I've been fortunate to sit down with Kevin Durant and
- 38:04Speaker 1: he has a this young man. You seem to have
- 38:07Speaker 1: captured Kevin Durant's personality or temperament in this character. Am
- 38:11Speaker 1: I wrong in saying that? But it really did kind
- 38:14Speaker 1: of resonate to the personality of life sotock because Kevin
- 38:17Speaker 1: was raised by a single mom in a basketball cynthric
- 38:20Speaker 1: world is set in Washington, d C. What Kevin Durant
- 38:23Speaker 1: is from talk about that. Yeah. I mean, look, I
- 38:28Speaker 1: think there were a couple of things, you know, I
- 38:30Speaker 1: was really looking for. And I mean this is such
- 38:32Speaker 1: a complicated character. You know. Number one, the dude's gotta
- 38:39Speaker 1: be athletic, and so we you know, we have this
- 38:44Speaker 1: huge casting search and this kid comes in who's not
- 38:49Speaker 1: just like Donking, like just tipping it in. He's like
- 38:51Speaker 1: throwing it back and you know, slamming it. Um. But
- 38:56Speaker 1: then the other thing too was you know, he was
- 39:00Speaker 1: talented and and so we um really it was just
- 39:06Speaker 1: like blown away to be able to find someone who
- 39:09Speaker 1: has acting chops and basketball chops all in wine. It
- 39:14Speaker 1: was was was a gift. And I think that you know, um,
- 39:20Speaker 1: you know, k D felt challenged to prove that he was,
- 39:28Speaker 1: you know, like this this top player that he that
- 39:32Speaker 1: that that he was, and you know, all great athletes,
- 39:36Speaker 1: you know, feel like they have something to prove, you know.
- 39:39Speaker 1: The real life Isaiah felt that as well. You know,
- 39:42Speaker 1: I mean he's played basketball, he understands those challenges, He's
- 39:46Speaker 1: had his bumps, and so he I think he was
- 39:48Speaker 1: just able to bring that forward and and when he
- 39:53Speaker 1: played out you know lovely on screen, we're talked to
- 39:55Speaker 1: an incredible writer, producers, show running of the new series
- 39:59Speaker 1: on Apple TV plus Swagger. Uh, Reggie Rocket Bythewood. The
- 40:03Speaker 1: series is an incredible force as far as teen drama, training, romance, Uh,
- 40:10Speaker 1: coming of age. Uh. This young man we're talking about Isaiah,
- 40:14Speaker 1: his character plays and he plays the character James Carson,
- 40:16Speaker 1: the fourteen year old megastar. I could relate this a
- 40:19Speaker 1: little bit of my personal life because my nephew, he
- 40:22Speaker 1: had a couple of songs, and I remember he was
- 40:24Speaker 1: we were tracking him at eighth grade, ninth grade. You know,
- 40:28Speaker 1: his son was the top point guard in Texas, you know,
- 40:30Speaker 1: And it's so the other song was a top small forward.
- 40:33Speaker 1: So I know the reality of this, But that what
- 40:36Speaker 1: I loved about it was how Reggie how is how
- 40:39Speaker 1: are you incorporating how the world of social media something
- 40:42Speaker 1: that the real Kevin Durant really didn't have to deal
- 40:45Speaker 1: with that this kid has to deal with on a
- 40:47Speaker 1: regular basis, incorporating that real lifestyle activity, how you can
- 40:52Speaker 1: be how your life is changed by a poast? Correct? Yeah,
- 40:57Speaker 1: I mean social media became his other director in our narrative,
- 41:02Speaker 1: and and so I mean it's just authentic to the
- 41:07Speaker 1: way um, people in this age group relate to each other.
- 41:13Speaker 1: You know, yes, you know, and and as we know,
- 41:15Speaker 1: they are great positives with it and great negatives with it.
- 41:18Speaker 1: And and as you as you mentioned, like, yeah, this
- 41:21Speaker 1: is a drama that does focus a lot on teens,
- 41:24Speaker 1: but it's also like really really aspiring to give a
- 41:27Speaker 1: view from every seat in the house, you know, so
- 41:30Speaker 1: that we deal with fatherhood, we deal with coaching, we
- 41:33Speaker 1: deal with parent hood, and so I think that you know,
- 41:37Speaker 1: if you're if you're a mom, if you're a coach,
- 41:39Speaker 1: if you're a dad, um, if you're a child, like,
- 41:43Speaker 1: there's something that's going to pull it you emotionally. We'll
- 41:47Speaker 1: read here. First of all, I don't want to sell
- 41:49Speaker 1: you serious short because I'm we gonna we got mill
- 41:51Speaker 1: tankcause I'm gonna go to o'shean, I'm gonna talk to Gina,
- 41:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk to these characters breakdowns to have so
- 41:57Speaker 1: much layers. But those kids what brought me in. And
- 42:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna just tell how really was I I get
- 42:03Speaker 1: up every day at four thirty am. All right, I
- 42:05Speaker 1: saw five straight episodes because each episode kept me, kept
- 42:09Speaker 1: me kept five My wife looked at me, said Rishan's
- 42:12Speaker 1: one thirty in the morning. I said, okay, okay, I'm
- 42:15Speaker 1: gonna go to bed. I'm gonna go to bed. Let
- 42:17Speaker 1: go to bed, because soon as I wrap up this interview,
- 42:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna screen the rest of them. I noticed she
- 42:21Speaker 1: was premieres October twenty nine. It will premiere with three
- 42:24Speaker 1: episodes in a row, and when you get to that
- 42:26Speaker 1: third episode, you will be hooked in this series. Please
- 42:30Speaker 1: take the time to watch consecutively series and after that
- 42:33Speaker 1: it will air every Friday. What Reggie has put together
- 42:36Speaker 1: is um is uh you. Gina who plays the mom
- 42:40Speaker 1: Jason's mom, Joanna who plays Jason's mom, very dominant character,
- 42:45Speaker 1: very uh opinionated. She knows what she wants, she knows
- 42:48Speaker 1: what she sees in the sun. Her expectations maybe over reaching,
- 42:52Speaker 1: and her advice and to how he should play shouldn't
- 42:55Speaker 1: be something he should be following. But that's what the
- 42:57Speaker 1: comment of age part of the writing is all about,
- 43:00Speaker 1: correct Reggie, Yeah, I mean, you know, and here's a
- 43:04Speaker 1: crazy thing, right, Like it's like when you have a
- 43:07Speaker 1: kid that talented. Yes, there's still a whole bunch of
- 43:12Speaker 1: questions in terms of like, you know, where he or
- 43:15Speaker 1: she is gonna go, and it really becomes like this
- 43:18Speaker 1: coming of age for but the kid for the parents,
- 43:23Speaker 1: Like it's just it's it's so complicated, it's so challenging
- 43:27Speaker 1: to you know, you you sort of wish we all
- 43:29Speaker 1: had a crystal ball and knew where their kid was
- 43:32Speaker 1: was gonna go. But you know, on a whole other level, man,
- 43:36Speaker 1: you know, um, a lot of times we pushed our kids. Yes,
- 43:40Speaker 1: sometimes we have to. And you know, if we do
- 43:43Speaker 1: it wrong, it's a negative, and if we do it right,
- 43:46Speaker 1: it's a positive. Right. I know, my daughter was a
- 43:49Speaker 1: tennis prodigy, you know, my my wife she was. She
- 43:53Speaker 1: was really a lot more aggressive than I was, which
- 43:55Speaker 1: is our role. We all play roles as parents, you know.
- 43:58Speaker 1: And I always felt my daughter was talented at it
- 44:01Speaker 1: what she did, but that wasn't what she wanted to do.
- 44:03Speaker 1: Now she's in the typewando and and I told my wife,
- 44:06Speaker 1: don't be disappointed if that's not what she wants to do,
- 44:08Speaker 1: that's not her end game. You know, she blew out
- 44:10Speaker 1: her knee when she was nateen and she asked me
- 44:12Speaker 1: that she wanted to go to college, because you go
- 44:14Speaker 1: to college, and yes, whoever your dreams are. And that's
- 44:17Speaker 1: what this young man is learning and his and his
- 44:20Speaker 1: best friend, who we see the relationship going. I'm talking
- 44:23Speaker 1: about Crystal, and that's another storyline I'm not gonna get
- 44:25Speaker 1: into any detail on because it should be seen and
- 44:28Speaker 1: you should see the development of her character in the series.
- 44:32Speaker 1: But also it's it's it's kind of a romance, but
- 44:36Speaker 1: their friends their friends, they're die hard friends. And what
- 44:39Speaker 1: you learned in this series, Reggie, if I could be
- 44:42Speaker 1: so bold to say this, is that you learn to listen.
- 44:45Speaker 1: You learn to listen with people are trying to talk
- 44:47Speaker 1: to you. That was a big part of this whole
- 44:51Speaker 1: first five episodes that I heard screaming at me people
- 44:55Speaker 1: when they talk, take the time to hear and not talk,
- 44:58Speaker 1: and so much talk about your problems. But other people
- 45:01Speaker 1: have problems too, and you should learn to hear their problems,
- 45:04Speaker 1: especially when they're coming to you to talk. That was
- 45:07Speaker 1: strong language in this in this series so far. Well,
- 45:11Speaker 1: but I mean it feels like that's a lost art
- 45:13Speaker 1: in this country right now. Right Like listening, you know,
- 45:17Speaker 1: like like like really listening, like really trying to understand
- 45:20Speaker 1: where somebody else is coming from. You know, but I
- 45:23Speaker 1: see other great thing about having a platform like this
- 45:25Speaker 1: to be able to give insight, to to bring people
- 45:29Speaker 1: into you know, various characters and and see and you
- 45:33Speaker 1: know um so much. You know that the show's called swagger,
- 45:40Speaker 1: you know. And and so you know, obviously on the
- 45:43Speaker 1: surface that's like barbato and confidence, but really underneath all
- 45:50Speaker 1: of that swaggers would having a cause bigger than yourself, right,
- 45:54Speaker 1: And so whether you your causes, your people, your family,
- 45:59Speaker 1: your team, having that cause bigger than yourself, um, really
- 46:04Speaker 1: gives you that sense of purpose, that that grid, that
- 46:07Speaker 1: determination to move closer to your your dreams and your calling.
- 46:12Speaker 1: And I think that's why, you know, you know, in
- 46:15Speaker 1: Jason's journey, you know, Jason's journey initially is himself, yes,
- 46:20Speaker 1: you know, and as we go through the narrative, it
- 46:25Speaker 1: expands as he expands. We know an interesting thing about
- 46:28Speaker 1: it because now I'm going to go to Oce Jackson's character.
- 46:30Speaker 1: You know, he plays icon, a character who didn't reach
- 46:33Speaker 1: who had great basketball potential but didn't reach the potential.
- 46:37Speaker 1: And when you staid reach the potential, the NBA is
- 46:40Speaker 1: the goal. The NBA is the ultimate goal of anybody
- 46:42Speaker 1: who puts on those sneakers and gets on that hard
- 46:44Speaker 1: court and try to imagine they're the next Michael Jordan
- 46:47Speaker 1: or the next Scareem Abdul Jabbard, or next Lebron James
- 46:50Speaker 1: today or next KD. Because KD six and eleven and
- 46:54Speaker 1: seven feet tall and dribbled like a six point six
- 46:56Speaker 1: ft point guard and shoots like Steph Kurr on the
- 47:00Speaker 1: even any given day, but dunk like Lebron. So that's
- 47:04Speaker 1: to be to have a show about that, there had
- 47:06Speaker 1: to be some additional pressure Reggie, knowing that you this
- 47:09Speaker 1: is when the regular superstar. There wasn't a guy who
- 47:11Speaker 1: who's a marginal player or just a good player. K
- 47:15Speaker 1: D can probably go down in history is one of
- 47:17Speaker 1: the all top five all time players. Here, you ain't
- 47:20Speaker 1: having a room and to create a scripted series that
- 47:24Speaker 1: has to retain a level of credibility, and you do,
- 47:26Speaker 1: my friend, because we're gonna get into these action shots.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Because I was like blown away by these these I'll
- 47:32Speaker 1: tell you how something when you when you watch TV,
- 47:34Speaker 1: watch Reggie do his work, his his his magic, and
- 47:38Speaker 1: you see a shot that don't have jump cuts in him,
- 47:41Speaker 1: and I'm going, okay, that's a real shot from the corner.
- 47:45Speaker 1: When Nick Mindez hits his first three pointer at the
- 47:48Speaker 1: top of the I go, that's a real shots. That's it.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I said, I said, I said, I said, Reggie, Reggie,
- 47:57Speaker 1: my boy has said, man, how how how you pulling
- 48:02Speaker 1: that off? Bro? How many? First of all, you know,
- 48:05Speaker 1: first of all, though you started talking about the pressure,
- 48:08Speaker 1: we just say so creatively, what I wanted to do
- 48:13Speaker 1: was have the basketball feel real. So it actually alleviated
- 48:17Speaker 1: pressure as the network and everybody, yeah, we gotta be like,
- 48:22Speaker 1: you know, it's gotta be real, it's gonna be kevin.
- 48:24Speaker 1: So so we cast actors someone who had really played
- 48:28Speaker 1: ball before. But we were able to, like, like you know,
- 48:30Speaker 1: it's so rare to be able to cast somebody and
- 48:33Speaker 1: give them like three months of training, like multiple days
- 48:37Speaker 1: throughout the week, hours and hours upon a day to
- 48:41Speaker 1: learn how to become a baller. And then we had
- 48:45Speaker 1: our ballers who then had a lot of time to
- 48:49Speaker 1: work with acting coaches. So just that alone, UM, it
- 48:53Speaker 1: alleviated pressure because it allowed me to then have like
- 48:56Speaker 1: a real process where everybody knew the basketball needed to
- 49:00Speaker 1: me in a high level. UM. And you know, look
- 49:03Speaker 1: there was choreography and training sessions, but I mean they
- 49:08Speaker 1: just came and they and it was like, I mean,
- 49:11Speaker 1: you know, it was a luxury, like like the kids
- 49:13Speaker 1: wanted to do it, you know, like they were like, yo,
- 49:16Speaker 1: I'm in some of it. Some of it, you know,
- 49:18Speaker 1: it was from them, a choreographer and a trainer, but
- 49:21Speaker 1: some of it was them like, let's let me tell
- 49:23Speaker 1: you what I can do, and all we have to
- 49:24Speaker 1: do is photographic. We'll be right back with more mind
- 49:27Speaker 1: making conversation with the creator, writer, and executive producer of
- 49:30Speaker 1: the new Apple TV series Swagger, Reggie rock Bitewood. Look
- 49:36Speaker 1: at your children's eyes to see the true magic of
- 49:39Speaker 1: a forest. It's a storybook world for them. You look
- 49:42Speaker 1: and see a tree. They see the wrinkled face of
- 49:45Speaker 1: a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky. They see

- 51:14Speaker 1: of the new Apple TV Plus series Swagger, Reggie Rock Bitewood.
- 51:19Speaker 1: How tall as uh as Asaiah Hello plays James Carson.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I think he's like because he could leap man. Yeah, yeah,
- 51:29Speaker 1: I think he's six three six four six three or
- 51:32Speaker 1: six three. That young man. He has some elevation now.
- 51:37Speaker 1: He and his acting skills are on point. He has
- 51:39Speaker 1: a career in this business. Good looking kid. Oh Shan
- 51:42Speaker 1: Jackson icon Yeah, um, all the you know, Oh had
- 51:47Speaker 1: multiple scenes where we were dunking, but he didn't make
- 51:49Speaker 1: the cut. Well well, I know he didn't make up,
- 51:52Speaker 1: but he could shoot. Let let's talk about his shooting though,
- 51:57Speaker 1: because I was impressed. I was impressed. Hey, let me
- 52:00Speaker 1: tell you something. In that game and a pilot where
- 52:04Speaker 1: they're going one on each then wasn't supposed to make
- 52:11Speaker 1: people shown off. I just kept the cameras and I
- 52:16Speaker 1: was like, let him go. You're lying, dude, because I'm
- 52:21Speaker 1: looking at saying what I said. Because I had these
- 52:23Speaker 1: little checkpoints. I said, rim height, you see it's ten
- 52:25Speaker 1: feet not nine. You said he made all the ships
- 52:29Speaker 1: to tell I mean because there's a lot of basket
- 52:31Speaker 1: Come on, there's a lot of basketball shows where you
- 52:33Speaker 1: see somebody dunking and you know that's something eight foot
- 52:36Speaker 1: nine ft. So that was really important for the We
- 52:40Speaker 1: didn't want to do that, you know, we really wanted
- 52:43Speaker 1: it to look and and some people would get vibe
- 52:45Speaker 1: and there's people like you that you can smell it
- 52:47Speaker 1: if it's not real. First of all, that's what it
- 52:49Speaker 1: pressed me the most. I'm gonna tell you something. I
- 52:52Speaker 1: loved my sleep when I get it. I don't like
- 52:54Speaker 1: getting up at four thirty. So you know, Reggie, I
- 52:57Speaker 1: love you. Don't Reid, I would love you that much.
- 52:59Speaker 1: But when it's series, I'm looking at it because my
- 53:02Speaker 1: wife was sitting right next to me. Excuse in factually
- 53:04Speaker 1: she was cooking in the kitchen when we started, and
- 53:07Speaker 1: next thing, by episode two, she was sitting right next
- 53:09Speaker 1: to me, engaged in the series. Like I said, it's
- 53:12Speaker 1: a series that, uh, they're a boy basketball so many
- 53:16Speaker 1: layers about life, about parenting, about how you know she
- 53:19Speaker 1: could relate to because our daughter, you know, it was
- 53:22Speaker 1: a prodigy, like like Jase, like like the character being
- 53:26Speaker 1: played out here, being pulled in so many directions going
- 53:28Speaker 1: to private camps, were recruited, and so it was very
- 53:32Speaker 1: relatable to what we deal with today because that's all
- 53:34Speaker 1: you see nowadays and now with name likeness and imagery
- 53:38Speaker 1: that that you can pay for and kids can get
- 53:40Speaker 1: the money they used to hide to get nowadays. But
- 53:43Speaker 1: the whole layers are putting all these characters together. That
- 53:47Speaker 1: was a lot of work. How did you really start
- 53:49Speaker 1: projecting each role? The nes, the sheol say, the the
- 53:57Speaker 1: bad guys, the good guys, the the layers. A lot
- 54:00Speaker 1: of hard work wind into this, Reggie, how did you
- 54:03Speaker 1: pull it off? I mean, you know, I mean again
- 54:07Speaker 1: having this mandate of you know this, this self imposed
- 54:11Speaker 1: mandate of having a view from every seat in the house. Um,
- 54:14Speaker 1: and a lot of research, spoke with a lot of people,
- 54:16Speaker 1: and really, you know, much of my work and the
- 54:19Speaker 1: writing process also starts with like really putting together a
- 54:21Speaker 1: really great writer's room, you know, so um, you know,
- 54:24Speaker 1: in particular, one of my writers, guy named George Dorman,
- 54:27Speaker 1: wrote this book, really good book called um they Play
- 54:30Speaker 1: their Hearts Out and it follows a youth basketball team. Um.
- 54:34Speaker 1: It was very important for me to have some incredible
- 54:37Speaker 1: black women in my writer's room. Um and and directing
- 54:43Speaker 1: as well, right and directing as well, and and and
- 54:45Speaker 1: directing as well Nigel and mean you haven't seen her,
- 54:48Speaker 1: so when you go back, you're gonna see h Nigel
- 54:51Speaker 1: is the one that Nigel is directed, which is one
- 54:53Speaker 1: oh six, you know. And and so you know, when
- 54:56Speaker 1: you have a room like that, it's really gray inspiring
- 55:01Speaker 1: because we're challenging each other, we're challenging other people's points
- 55:05Speaker 1: of view, we're bringing in our real life experiences. And
- 55:08Speaker 1: in a room like that, like I never say, like,
- 55:10Speaker 1: you don't. You don't create a room like that because
- 55:12Speaker 1: it's politically correct. You create a room like that because
- 55:16Speaker 1: it gives you the best product. Wow, I just want
- 55:20Speaker 1: to say this about the show. The credibility of the
- 55:23Speaker 1: show is amazing. The Meg's role, who plays his business partner,
- 55:28Speaker 1: O'shan's business, cavil hood, his icon uh David, his role
- 55:32Speaker 1: as the NBA star who made it, who Who's Who's
- 55:36Speaker 1: Who's has an issue with icon, All these layers, like
- 55:39Speaker 1: you were saying earlier, and that's what I wanna say.
- 55:41Speaker 1: I just wanted to start with the kids because that's
- 55:44Speaker 1: the core of this that's the that's the part that
- 55:46Speaker 1: that's the innocence of the series. Are the children? Are
- 55:50Speaker 1: the teenagers? Because you have all these adults who have
- 55:53Speaker 1: agendas from his mother has an agenda, o'sha is in denial,
- 55:58Speaker 1: but he has an agenda. Dave has an agenda. Uh,
- 56:01Speaker 1: the guy from the glad Eators, he has an agenda.
- 56:05Speaker 1: All tied back to the reality what you've you're showing us, Reggie,
- 56:09Speaker 1: this is happening right now. This is real life. This
- 56:12Speaker 1: is not something you're making up. And to be able
- 56:15Speaker 1: to pull that off, and then it's almost tragic because
- 56:18Speaker 1: how do we pull these kids out of it? Always
- 56:20Speaker 1: there a train that we can't control anymore, and you
- 56:23Speaker 1: just capturing it, put it on paper, allowing us to
- 56:26Speaker 1: see a version of it. Well, you know, first of all,
- 56:29Speaker 1: let me just say something. But what you talked about
- 56:31Speaker 1: with innocence, right, so, you know, are most of our characters,
- 56:35Speaker 1: most of these kids are fourteen years old, and so
- 56:37Speaker 1: we know fourteen has some historical context, you know within
- 56:41Speaker 1: the black community, right, Um, you know Matil fourteen years old, August.
- 56:47Speaker 1: You know, I'm I'm murdered, and you know that's still
- 56:51Speaker 1: reverberates within our community. You know, I thought of these
- 56:54Speaker 1: years later, right, um, and I saw this painting. But
- 56:59Speaker 1: this amazing artist named Lisa Winnington, she did this painting
- 57:03Speaker 1: called um there was about Emmett tail and it was
- 57:05Speaker 1: called um. How let me see if I get the
- 57:10Speaker 1: title right, Lisa. If I mess up the name of
- 57:12Speaker 1: your art, I apologize. But it was how she sent
- 57:16Speaker 1: him and how she got him back. And in this
- 57:19Speaker 1: painting you see half of Emmett's face that's innocent and
- 57:24Speaker 1: a vibrant and all these vibrant colors around them, like
- 57:27Speaker 1: what we were calling our show, Emmet blue and Emmett yellow,
- 57:30Speaker 1: and on the other side of his face it's mutilated.
- 57:33Speaker 1: It's you know, with the you know, you know, the
- 57:36Speaker 1: way the way the space was and he was beaten down.
- 57:38Speaker 1: But we use her painting many ways. It's inspiration. And really,
- 57:44Speaker 1: you know, when I would talk to everyone about what
- 57:45Speaker 1: we're doing, we were like, this innocence is what we're
- 57:48Speaker 1: fighting for for our characters. We want this sort of innocence.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Our coaches they're fighting for our kids and maintain this innocence.
- 57:55Speaker 1: And the flip side of it is that you're on
- 57:57Speaker 1: the other side of it, you know, and so um,
- 58:00Speaker 1: so much of the of the of the sister's work.
- 58:02Speaker 1: You know, like I said, we you know it was
- 58:04Speaker 1: it was actually a template for our color palette, you know,
- 58:07Speaker 1: Emmon blue, Emmon yellow, like all these sort of colors
- 58:10Speaker 1: and our artwork U inspired us. And so the innocence
- 58:13Speaker 1: versus the other side of it was, it was something
- 58:16Speaker 1: that we really spent a lot of time talking about
- 58:20Speaker 1: my brother. Outstanding of talking to Reggie Rock Britewood Swagger.
- 58:24Speaker 1: Apple TV Plus premiers October twenty ninth. Three episode WHI

- 58:36Speaker 1: Adults are inspired by NBA superstar Kevin Durant's life and
- 58:41Speaker 1: experiences in the Washington, D c. Area. And then closing,
- 58:44Speaker 1: you got the Yankee had on you know, uh and
- 58:47Speaker 1: I don't you know Steven A. Smith. She was, Oh no,
- 58:51Speaker 1: never bring to Stephen A. Smith. Okay, you know that's
- 58:53Speaker 1: why that's what I'm managed. And he's a superstar Yankee fan,
- 58:57Speaker 1: just like you. Well, the Yankees make a callback. I
- 58:59Speaker 1: keep asking them when y'all come back, and then we're
- 59:02Speaker 1: gonna wrap up the interview. I got one minute left.
- 59:04Speaker 1: It's your it's your moment to say the Yankees, sir. Yeah, well,
- 59:10Speaker 1: I mean, you know, the Yankees have one championships, more
- 59:15Speaker 1: championships than any other professional team. So what's your team? Brother, Oh,
- 59:20Speaker 1: Houston Astros? Okay, um um, how how how are we
- 59:25Speaker 1: gonna do this year? Werenna We're gonna play it honestly,
- 59:27Speaker 1: this year. What we're gonna do, We're gonna try and
- 59:29Speaker 1: win this year. What we what are we gonna do?
- 59:31Speaker 1: Because you know, you know that they Now I see
- 59:35Speaker 1: where the Yankee things come from. Because what y'all how
- 59:37Speaker 1: to do to to beat the Yankees? I mean, we
- 59:39Speaker 1: we really want to talk about that. But here's a complict,
- 59:42Speaker 1: right because now who do I root for? A might
- 59:45Speaker 1: rooting for the Astros? Are my rooting for the Red Sox.
- 59:49Speaker 1: So you know, so that's that's that's that's a tough one.
- 59:51Speaker 1: But I do like the Astros. But Yankees will always
- 59:54Speaker 1: be back Man one championships recognized. Thank you, brother, you
- 59:57Speaker 1: are a champion too. Thankful for this fantastics series Swagger
