- 0:32Speaker 1: of a hands handmade man's grooming product called Scotch Porter.
- 0:37Speaker 1: The Scotch Porter Live includes beard products. You know, I
- 0:41Speaker 1: got a beard, so you know I'm loving that. Uh
- 0:43Speaker 1: face hair, body got face hair. The body got that
- 0:47Speaker 1: so I'm still loving him, shave and accessories. He started
- 0:50Speaker 1: the country company from his kitchen, which is why we
- 0:53Speaker 1: have them on this show. See a lot of ideas, people,
- 0:55Speaker 1: I need to start my beers just around the corn.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I needed, I needed. I need to give me a loan.
- 0:59Speaker 1: This man started his business from his kitchen by experimenting
- 1:03Speaker 1: with botanicals and other greedients that have not been clinically
- 1:07Speaker 1: shown to be toxic all costinogenic. Please welcome to Money
- 1:10Speaker 1: Making Conversation, Calvin Kalas. Thanks for having me, appreciate being here. Okay,
- 1:17Speaker 1: first of all, you're a barbershop guy, right, that's your background, right? Yes,
- 1:21Speaker 1: So I owned the barbershop. It's my background. And my
- 1:24Speaker 1: mom also owned the beauty problem in barbershop when I
- 1:27Speaker 1: was a kid. So that means you can talk. Yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 1: you talk. You've been talking. You've been, you've been, You've
- 1:34Speaker 1: been talking on for a long time. How long were
- 1:36Speaker 1: you in the barbershop business, sir, um? So, I actually
- 1:39Speaker 1: owned the barbershop for just three years. But again, I
- 1:42Speaker 1: grew up in the barbershop my as a kid, my
- 1:45Speaker 1: mom forced my brother and Ida pretty much spent every
- 1:48Speaker 1: weeknight and weekend in the barbershop. So I've spent some
- 1:51Speaker 1: years in the barbershop. So where are you based at
- 1:54Speaker 1: in New Jersey and East Orange, New Jersey? Oh? He
- 1:56Speaker 1: big talk? Oh my god, you picked up at all
- 1:59Speaker 1: that sports up man? What what's what? What's you get
- 2:01Speaker 1: before we getting into the interview, what's the sports team
- 2:03Speaker 1: that you did you pull it for up there? What
- 2:05Speaker 1: sports team? Um? I mean, since I was a kid,
- 2:08Speaker 1: Patriots have always been my god, your Jersey boy, your
- 2:16Speaker 1: Jersey boy. I'm a Jersey boy. I was born in Brooklyn,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but but yeah, a Jersey boy. You just gift all
- 2:21Speaker 1: over the giants, gift all over the gents. And when
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've gone to the Patriots, I know, well, they'll be
- 2:27Speaker 1: giving you, they'll be giving you a hard time. You
- 2:29Speaker 1: luck you're not in the barbershop business, no more bore you.
- 2:32Speaker 1: They'd be riding you and you would just be smiling too.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah wow, that's awesome. So so tell us your background
- 2:43Speaker 1: to make you to be the common entrepreneur. Like you said,
- 2:45Speaker 1: you your mom brought you up in the business, you
- 2:48Speaker 1: and your brother, you know, so you had a clear
- 2:50Speaker 1: understanding of what that lifestyle was. Was that income, the
- 2:53Speaker 1: income possibilities of what you can generate, you know, to
- 2:57Speaker 1: take care of your family, because we all have bigger
- 2:59Speaker 1: aspirations than what your family presents to you. How did
- 3:02Speaker 1: you get into barber business and then how did you
- 3:05Speaker 1: start developing this product line? Absolutely so? Um so, I
- 3:10Speaker 1: mean I recalled being uh broken and frustrated a college
- 3:14Speaker 1: student and I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to
- 3:17Speaker 1: do with my life. UM, but I do recall, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: every other Friday, I take the last twenty dollars that
- 3:24Speaker 1: I had in my pocket and I'd go get it cut,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and I leave the barbershop feeling like I literally could
- 3:30Speaker 1: take on the world. UM. And I also remember my
- 3:33Speaker 1: time from my mom's barbershop. UM. You know. So so
- 3:37Speaker 1: these experiences, you know, I've witnessed firsthand how grooming had
- 3:40Speaker 1: the potential to help people feel better about themselves. UM.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And so with these unique experiences, specifically only my own barbershop,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and noticing an issue that the customers had UM in
- 3:50Speaker 1: our shop, uh, predominantly African American and Hispanic men, very dry,
- 3:56Speaker 1: frizzy damage here and bears. Um always a pretty good problem,
- 4:00Speaker 1: Solva went home, uh board with the daytime job. So
- 4:05Speaker 1: let me back up and say, UM, let me back
- 4:09Speaker 1: up and say that the first job that I had
- 4:11Speaker 1: out of college was at a global design firm. UM,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and I hated it. UM. Then I moved on to
- 4:17Speaker 1: working and finance of the market research firm, and I
- 4:19Speaker 1: hated that even more. It was something about, you know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: spending the rest of my life behind and office cubic
- 4:26Speaker 1: who felt like a gust settons UM and I felt
- 4:30Speaker 1: a little so crushing each and every day. And somehow
- 4:33Speaker 1: I knew that I was supposed to be doing something more. UM.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So when I had the opportunity opened up the barbershop
- 4:39Speaker 1: and spotted an issue UM and because I was bored
- 4:42Speaker 1: with the daytime job, M I became very passionate about
- 4:45Speaker 1: solving this issue that our customers had. And so every
- 4:49Speaker 1: UH weeknight and on the weekend, I'd be home learning
- 4:53Speaker 1: everything that I could about skinning here and and crafting up,
- 4:56Speaker 1: crafting products and bringing back to the shop UM to
- 4:59Speaker 1: hand off to the bar as in customers to get feedback. UM.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So that's how it all started. UM ended up, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: really creating a set of products that the customers loved. UM.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I love so much that word spread and folks were
- 5:12Speaker 1: coming from New York in Connecticut, a little New Jersey
- 5:15Speaker 1: barbershop purchasing products UM. And out of necessity, we had
- 5:20Speaker 1: launched UH dot com to make it easier for those
- 5:22Speaker 1: folks to get products. UM. And you know, six months
- 5:27Speaker 1: into launching the business in the shop and online UH
- 5:30Speaker 1: from the kitchen of my home, has did a million
- 5:32Speaker 1: dollars in sales. UM ended up quitting the daytime job,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and uh, I ended up also closed in the barbershop
- 5:39Speaker 1: because at that time I felt a little scatter brain
- 5:42Speaker 1: um in that I had full time job is making
- 5:46Speaker 1: product um every moment that I had, and I owned
- 5:48Speaker 1: the barbershops. So I ended up closing the barbershop and
- 5:52Speaker 1: UM quitting the job and focusing on Scotch porter UM.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And you know, it proved to be a really great idea. UM.
- 6:01Speaker 1: And in the three short years that we've been in business,
- 6:04Speaker 1: we've we've sold over four hundred thousand units in eighty
- 6:07Speaker 1: seven countries. Let's let's let's keep talking about that. How
- 6:11Speaker 1: did you come over with the name? Really simple? UM,
- 6:16Speaker 1: it's the culmination of the things I love. So I
- 6:18Speaker 1: love Scotch. I'm a Scotch drinker. And uh, Greg Reporter
- 6:24Speaker 1: is a jazz musician that has an incredible voice. And
- 6:27Speaker 1: if your listeners aren't aware of who gregor Reporter is,
- 6:30Speaker 1: they should should get in tune. UM. So, yeah's the
- 6:33Speaker 1: culmination of of the things I love. Let's talk about
- 6:36Speaker 1: the launching this business, because the online has been like
- 6:40Speaker 1: you on Amazon and you can go to your website,
- 6:43Speaker 1: so just the whole Also, you're in Walmart. Correct, we
- 6:47Speaker 1: are not in No, we are not in Walmart. Okay, cool,
- 6:50Speaker 1: So but you're just online correct right now? I mean
- 6:54Speaker 1: eight of our businesses is online scotch Reporter dot com
- 6:58Speaker 1: and like you said, we're selling we sell all on Amazon,
- 7:00Speaker 1: and that about a hundred and forty uh small boutiques
- 7:04Speaker 1: and high end barbershops across the country. I know I
- 7:07Speaker 1: have a minute left in this break because we're gonna
- 7:08Speaker 1: continue on the next break. But like, I have a beard, Okay,
- 7:12Speaker 1: you know, I brush it. I've tried grease, I've tried
- 7:16Speaker 1: different ARLs. What what what what makes yours work on
- 7:19Speaker 1: a on a beard? What? What? What? What? What? What? What?
- 7:23Speaker 1: What get people excited about your product? Yeah? I mean
- 7:27Speaker 1: it's that it's effective. And you know, most folks that
- 7:30Speaker 1: have beards, um you know this this stryness is uh
- 7:34Speaker 1: the shedding uh and all of those things leave you
- 7:38Speaker 1: with a lackluster beards and also uh uh studs growth.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So when folks come to love about our beard products
- 7:45Speaker 1: specifically is that it uh provides moisture um shine uh
- 7:51Speaker 1: prevents the breakage and shedding and and and helps to
- 7:54Speaker 1: promote a soft, healthy, growing beer. Well that's what I need,
- 7:58Speaker 1: because I'm not getting rid of beard. You know, I
- 8:00Speaker 1: grew my beard. Uh, I've always had a beard in
- 8:03Speaker 1: college and I stopped wearing a beard, went to work
- 8:05Speaker 1: for IBM, left that corporate life, just like you. Just
- 8:08Speaker 1: I wasn't feeling that death. So I don't feel like
- 8:10Speaker 1: you are alone. But more important, we're gonna talk about
- 8:12Speaker 1: more of the products and talk about this new just
- 8:14Speaker 1: a new England Patriots fan here, my man a lot
- 8:18Speaker 1: of Jersey, but that it was great to have been
- 8:20Speaker 1: on the phone. Man. We're gonna be friends for a
- 8:22Speaker 1: long time, and I'll be up in New York on
- 8:23Speaker 1: Friday trying to drop by your place. Uh, be back
- 8:27Speaker 1: with more money making conversation with my man, Mr Corlace,
- 8:32Speaker 1: You're back with money making conversations. This show is designed
- 8:35Speaker 1: to give out information. A lot of people are listening
- 8:38Speaker 1: on the show. Uh look here, this is not a
- 8:42Speaker 1: magic trick. Let me just tell you right now. The
- 8:45Speaker 1: individuals that I talked to on this show telling you
- 8:49Speaker 1: there is a journey involved, there are risks involved to
- 8:53Speaker 1: being successful. Nobody. No, I would never bring anybody on
- 8:56Speaker 1: this show and say, hey, man, I was just walking
- 8:58Speaker 1: down streets. Somebody just tapped me on the shoulder. I'm rich.
- 9:01Speaker 1: That's a lie, because guess what if you got rich
- 9:05Speaker 1: that way. A lot of people do do lottery, but
- 9:07Speaker 1: I always tell people that people who win a lottery,
- 9:09Speaker 1: they they played a lottery. That's not something you know.
- 9:12Speaker 1: People like me just oh for the million walking there
- 9:15Speaker 1: just or just some numbers. I don't know what numbers.
- 9:17Speaker 1: So I'm gonna get the numbers. The machine spits out,
- 9:20Speaker 1: Just give me some numbers. The machine spits out. Okay,
- 9:22Speaker 1: guess I'm not winning like that. And so I always
- 9:25Speaker 1: tell people win successfully in life by planning, by getting
- 9:30Speaker 1: up when an organized thought, go to bed. When you
- 9:32Speaker 1: wake up, you know why you're waking up. When you
- 9:34Speaker 1: know why you're waking up, you'll be happy that you are.
- 9:37Speaker 1: And guess what. You may be mad because you want
- 9:39Speaker 1: to you want to do so many things. You had
- 9:41Speaker 1: playing and you were like this, what I may need
- 9:43Speaker 1: to move that wake up time a little bit earlier,
- 9:45Speaker 1: by wake up times. Four fifteen. That's my time, that's
- 9:49Speaker 1: my time, four fifteen. I wake up. Guess what? I
- 9:51Speaker 1: am not happy at four fifteen Richard's not walking around
- 9:55Speaker 1: there clicking my heels, jumping up, and now I'm not.
- 9:59Speaker 1: But guess I'm effective when I get up at four
- 10:01Speaker 1: fift I am not effective when I get up at
- 10:04Speaker 1: six am. I can assure you I've lost a lot
- 10:07Speaker 1: of vital lounging time because you know, when you get up,
- 10:10Speaker 1: nobody gets up and just runs out. You have to
- 10:12Speaker 1: have a moment where you just Okay, let me chake
- 10:14Speaker 1: a deep breath, let me huh, let me evaluate the situation,
- 10:17Speaker 1: just like I I understand why am I moving in this direction?
- 10:20Speaker 1: And so h You might want to read the newspaper,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but when you get up, hits this news button, hits
- 10:25Speaker 1: this news button, and you're flying at that door. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: can assure you you're not a successful person. My guests
- 10:30Speaker 1: on the phone is a successful person. You know he
- 10:33Speaker 1: decided to guess what, um my mom, she's been successful.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I got a barbershop. I'm being successful. But the thing
- 10:40Speaker 1: I want to know about this line what she told
- 10:43Speaker 1: us that he loved Scotch And you know that that's
- 10:46Speaker 1: why I love I went to pe. Why you start
- 10:48Speaker 1: these names because there's always a great name, because guess what,
- 10:51Speaker 1: there's passion behind that. So so it wasn't like he
- 10:54Speaker 1: just thought of somebody beard for men or whatever. He said, this,
- 10:57Speaker 1: this is something emotional. I'm gonna attached two things there
- 11:00Speaker 1: that I feel good about. Isn't that correct? You? You
- 11:03Speaker 1: attached to things that make you feel good. So when
- 11:06Speaker 1: you see people walking out to do or buying your
- 11:08Speaker 1: products online, they are buying something that makes you feel good, absolutely,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and and and something that I that I bought into
- 11:16Speaker 1: the world. So it really feels good. Now here's the deal.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I feel a little homemade. Chemist said your homemade signce
- 11:24Speaker 1: that's here, you know, the kitchen just just making stuff.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Now did you work with somebody or you just with
- 11:30Speaker 1: a chemist or to to to start putting these these
- 11:33Speaker 1: these projects? How did that come about? Yeah? I mean initially,
- 11:38Speaker 1: initially I didn't have the budget to to work with
- 11:41Speaker 1: the chemists. Right. So, um, I did have a family
- 11:45Speaker 1: friend who you know, would make like soaps and and
- 11:49Speaker 1: motions and whatnot. She had made here or beard here products,
- 11:53Speaker 1: but she made uh so and motions and whatnot. And
- 11:56Speaker 1: so what she taught me is uh sort of the
- 11:59Speaker 1: base to making an emotion. Right. An emotion is water
- 12:03Speaker 1: oil combined um that can make a cream or a motion.
- 12:07Speaker 1: And so I took what I had learned from her
- 12:09Speaker 1: in terms of making that UM, and you know, did
- 12:12Speaker 1: a bit of research and on about here um and
- 12:16Speaker 1: skin and began to play with ingredients and create these emotions, uh,
- 12:22Speaker 1: which we're just like motion back then UM to create
- 12:25Speaker 1: Scotch border. Now let's talk about it exactly, U, because
- 12:30Speaker 1: you know, I'm African American, so I know by permes. Okay,
- 12:35Speaker 1: I've had my share of primes. You know, I've seen
- 12:40Speaker 1: my sisters have perms, burned out their hair and they
- 12:43Speaker 1: show up the next next, next month, one one another,
- 12:46Speaker 1: one another. In fact, when we burned out our daughter's
- 12:48Speaker 1: hair putting the PERM on that. It's when I when
- 12:52Speaker 1: I reason I talking too, because that's the premise basically
- 12:54Speaker 1: a softening of your hair. They call it relaxing. So
- 12:58Speaker 1: when you saw about these these emotions and all, you
- 13:00Speaker 1: are just kind of like you softening it or with
- 13:03Speaker 1: that to the extreme of a perm. But it's kind
- 13:05Speaker 1: of like relaxing so you get a smooth, fresh feel
- 13:09Speaker 1: to your hand. Is it is it? Yeah? No, No,
- 13:13Speaker 1: it's it's most It's mostly about just providing moisture right.
- 13:17Speaker 1: The reason that we have you know, dry here, specifically
- 13:21Speaker 1: folks with like curly and wavy here is is that, um,
- 13:25Speaker 1: it's very difficult for natural oils or seven to kind
- 13:29Speaker 1: of come down the curl shaft when it's curly. UM.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So it's really about just providing moisture. Right. Moisture helps
- 13:36Speaker 1: with UH to prevent dryness um and essentially helps to
- 13:42Speaker 1: make the here softer. Um. We're not, you know, we
- 13:45Speaker 1: are doing nothing to change the individuals like curl pattern. Um.
- 13:51Speaker 1: If any negative hands is it and it just softens it.
- 13:54Speaker 1: It moisturizes and provides like a nice healthy sheen and
- 13:57Speaker 1: makes the beard look healthier because you have toothing easier.
- 14:00Speaker 1: You have the moisturizing and then you have the conditioner. Okay, yeah,
- 14:05Speaker 1: what's the difference, um, So we have both in our
- 14:09Speaker 1: in our product. UM. Nothing can nothing can moisturize the
- 14:15Speaker 1: beard other than water. Water is the only thing that
- 14:18Speaker 1: can really truly moisturize a beard. UM. There are what
- 14:22Speaker 1: they call emollients um that can help give the illusion
- 14:25Speaker 1: of softness UM. But nothing can truly moisturize a beard
- 14:30Speaker 1: um other than water. But there are some conditioning agents
- 14:34Speaker 1: in in our products as well. UM, so it does
- 14:38Speaker 1: help with moisturizing and conditioning the beard. UM conditioning the
- 14:43Speaker 1: beard is. UM conditioning the beard helps with like making
- 14:47Speaker 1: the beard feel softer, more manageable, so it's easier to
- 14:52Speaker 1: comb UM. And again, moisturizing moisturization is is basically UM.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You can only get that to water, So including water
- 15:05Speaker 1: in your product, I would tell you so, I'm looking
- 15:07Speaker 1: at your website, uh and it's uh, it's really nice,
- 15:11Speaker 1: it's really clean, it's really uh you know, you know,
- 15:15Speaker 1: if you know, like I said, you can get a
- 15:17Speaker 1: gift card on it for seventy five dollars. So this
- 15:20Speaker 1: is really good to know. If you don't know, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 1: young man with a beard, or your father, Father's Day
- 15:26Speaker 1: coming up, Okay, Valentine Day coming up. I'm telling you,
- 15:31Speaker 1: if your man gotta beer, get him a nice little
- 15:33Speaker 1: seventy five dollar gift car. Just go to Scotch Porter
- 15:36Speaker 1: dot com and you can and you can go online
- 15:38Speaker 1: and get him some conditioning, het him a nice little brush,
- 15:42Speaker 1: give him some wash. I'm telling you this. And we
- 15:45Speaker 1: have some Valentine Day bundles on the site right now.
- 15:48Speaker 1: That's like a forty five dollar price point. Yeah, I'm
- 15:51Speaker 1: already with you, brother, I'm already with you on the Valentine.
- 15:54Speaker 1: They still already saying that you get to seven to file.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Stare at the seventy five because if your man is
- 15:59Speaker 1: special to you, don't get him a nize little seventifive
- 16:02Speaker 1: dollar gifts gift certificate here and get you. Now, this
- 16:06Speaker 1: is a really great guy. Here's the deal is that
- 16:08Speaker 1: I know you had something. It's for this, says shave here. Okay, cool.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Now I'm a guy. I can only use electric, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 1: because if I use a razor, by face just blows
- 16:18Speaker 1: up ugly. Okay, so what what do you what do
- 16:21Speaker 1: you have the help of person out like me? Because
- 16:24Speaker 1: I see sensitive skin pre shave all. Is that something
- 16:27Speaker 1: that I can use or or or this is strictly
- 16:30Speaker 1: for people who use razors? Yeah, I mean some folks
- 16:34Speaker 1: have used uh, some folks. Most folks are using our
- 16:37Speaker 1: shave cream. To be honest with you, shape cream and
- 16:39Speaker 1: appreciap oil with a razor um. And you know, the
- 16:43Speaker 1: whole point of our shaving care line is it's meant
- 16:47Speaker 1: for folks with sentative skin um. So most shaving creams
- 16:53Speaker 1: have contained surfactors and sulfates in it. Hours happened to
- 16:57Speaker 1: be UM don't free UH fragrance free UM and it
- 17:03Speaker 1: it really does provide like this nice smooth shave without
- 17:07Speaker 1: the irritation, right. And I think most folks UM, specifically
- 17:12Speaker 1: Meta Color, choose to use an electric uh an electric
- 17:16Speaker 1: shaver versus the rate because of irritation and bumps. Absolutely absolutely,
- 17:21Speaker 1: these products are the answer to that where you can
- 17:24Speaker 1: still get that close shave with a razor minus the
- 17:28Speaker 1: irritation and bumps. He has signature candles. This man over here,
- 17:33Speaker 1: you're doing it. I got the little kid here, just
- 17:39Speaker 1: the dope kid. You're just doing it. That. The only
- 17:41Speaker 1: thing that I want you to add is uh, because
- 17:44Speaker 1: I used the shave cream that just putting you in right, Yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 1: are you thinking about adding that? Because man, I give
- 17:52Speaker 1: you my money left and right for that shave cream
- 17:56Speaker 1: for your ball for ball heads. But do you have
- 17:58Speaker 1: that this is perfect for that. I mean a lot
- 18:02Speaker 1: of folks UM, A lot of even our beer customers
