- 0:00Hello and welcome to two girls in the pod.
- 0:02I'm Sharon. Hi, I'm Christy.
- 0:05Hope all of you are doing well. As always you know about
- 0:08gratitude statements for that today.
- 0:13You know, one of the things we've been sometimes I think we
- 0:16struggle with this well is consistency.
- 0:20Yeah, especially when you have holidays come around.
- 0:23Sometimes consistency slips by the wayside.
- 0:27That is true, you know, And I think The thing is, is that, you
- 0:30know, we get so caught up in the tradition or all those
- 0:35activities or festivities and, you know, then we think to
- 0:38ourselves, you know, we really don't want to miss out on that
- 0:40stuff. Yeah, you know, so then we
- 0:42partake and then it turns out bad sometimes or doesn't even
- 0:48come about bad. And, you know, that's just
- 0:50about, you know, you know, we're talking about in that case, you
- 0:53know, the things that we eat and staying on your exercise
- 0:57programs and doing all of those things that I think are
- 0:59important. But it's consistency with
- 1:03everything, you know. And I think it's funny to me how
- 1:07you know, when I I'm talking with people and they say, well,
- 1:09you have to do something for 21 days or this many days, and you
- 1:12have a habit. But a habit is different than
- 1:14consistency. Consistency is something a habit
- 1:19is something that we will form over time, but it's usually not.
- 1:24We talked about while we get in the habit of working out, but
- 1:26it's the consistency that creates the habit.
- 1:30Yeah, well yeah, exactly. Cuz the it's it takes a while to
- 1:35create a habit. And I mean I don't even know how
- 1:37they can say a certain amount of days or whatever.
- 1:40I think that, you know, OK, on average they say that.
- 1:43But in order to make it a habit, you definitely have to have that
- 1:48consistency. And you know, one of the things
- 1:50we have found even with this podcast to remain consistent and
- 1:53we hear from everything that we read and other podcasts, all
- 1:57stuff, you have to be consistent and the consistency is what's
- 2:02important. And we are now over 100 podcasts
- 2:07in. So I think we're doing pretty
- 2:09good as far as consistency goes. What do you think?
- 2:11Yeah. But it does.
- 2:13It takes some ambition and effort to make that happen.
- 2:16And sometimes you know, some planning and that, but that's
- 2:20the key part of it. And I think that's what it is,
- 2:24is you know, it's consistency with and and when we're talking
- 2:26about consistency, it's not just, you know, people think,
- 2:29well, I'm consistent with my workout or whatever, but you
- 2:31know our consistency with our relationships even because when
- 2:35we stop being consistent and inconsistency requires I think
- 2:39an awareness to have a conscious awareness that you're doing
- 2:41something that there's an action taking place.
- 2:44Yes. And often times what I find is,
- 2:49and I could be guilty of this every once in a while, a little
- 2:51bit of inaction. Well, procrastination is
- 2:55definitely an issue for many, many people.
- 2:58You know, I said in action, she's saying procrastination.
- 3:01I don't know what this means. I know, it just turned so ugly
- 3:04right there, didn't it? You know?
- 3:07And procrastination can be one of those things some people say,
- 3:10well, you know, I'm a procrastinator because when I
- 3:12procrastinate, I that's when I really produce the best things,
- 3:18you know? But the problem is, is that
- 3:20without that consistency, that starts to catch up with you it.
- 3:25Becomes inaction a lot of times, absolutely.
- 3:29And I think that's what we're talking about here, is that
- 3:32consistency. And you know, one of the things
- 3:34that we've really shifted our focus to a little bit more is
- 3:37even being consistent with our relationships, making sure we're
- 3:42reaching out, being consistent with it.
- 3:45It's not that those people don't know that we still care, but
- 3:49once again, consistency is an action.
- 3:53And so that's been one of the things that we've kind of
- 3:56implemented in the last probably 8 months.
- 4:00Something like that is really shifting that focus to being
- 4:03consistent with our friendships, making sure we're reaching out
- 4:07to them, hanging out with them on a more consistent basis
- 4:11instead of once every, you know, 6-8 months, whatever.
- 4:16But I find that, and even in that, I don't know about with
- 4:19you, but I find that I'm really liking it because we're staying
- 4:22more up to date with our friends and what's going on with them
- 4:25and all that. Well, we've talked about a lot
- 4:28of times how you know those friendships and that really feed
- 4:31your soul and hopefully everyone has someone like that in their
- 4:36life. And I think if you maintain that
- 4:38consistently, that is a part of taking care of you as well.
- 4:42And you know, we talk about. You know how important that is
- 4:47and you know if you make that a priority and yeah, sometimes
- 4:52it's a it's a slow go with things.
- 4:54But that that's what that's what creates that eventually.
- 4:57Like you say a habit. You know you're building
- 5:00something takes some time. Well and I think the other thing
- 5:03with consistency is is and you know I always tell you this I've
- 5:07done how many crunches where where's my 6 pack.
- 5:11And I think that with consistency we, I think a lot of
- 5:15times our frame of mind becomes if I do this for three weeks
- 5:20then I should have this result. So therefore we then stop doing
- 5:25well that didn't work. On to the next thing, not
- 5:27understanding that it's that consistency is a continuation.
- 5:33And I hear that a lot about even like with weight loss programs
- 5:38and things like that, people eventually.
- 5:42It's like they get tired of it or that you know, and that's
- 5:45why. So if you're no longer being
- 5:47consistent, you're not going to see that result happen or what
- 5:51people are is they're consistent till they lose the weight and
- 5:54then they stop. Well, I reach my goal weight
- 5:57now. I don't have to do anything.
- 5:59Not understanding that it was the consistency of what they
- 6:01were doing that got them to the goal weight and that consistency
- 6:04is what's going to keep them at the maintenance weight.
- 6:06Yes, exactly. You know, like I said, it's with
- 6:08anything, you know. I think that people get so
- 6:11fixated on the end result and that's the thing.
- 6:15They think, OK, we'll do this and and it's for an amount of
- 6:18time and OK, I reached it, you know, but that's not how things
- 6:22work. I mean, we're constantly, you
- 6:25know, changing and we're constantly having to create
- 6:29those better healthy habits and they have to be consistent in
- 6:33order to have the result you want.
- 6:36I can't tell you how many times in therapy I'm telling my
- 6:39clients that I need you to practice this on a daily.
- 6:43I need you to be consistent with this in order for us to see
- 6:47those changes. And then, you know, once they
- 6:51see the change, then there is more of that motivation, but
- 6:55it's getting. But sometimes it's like, well, I
- 6:57tried that didn't work. Well, how many times did you try
- 6:59it? Well, twice.
- 7:01OK, well, that's not enough, you know.
- 7:04So even with that, sometimes I'll get some pushback with that
- 7:07about, well, how long do I have to do it?
- 7:10As long as it takes? As long as that consistency
- 7:13takes in order for you to get where you want to be.
- 7:17Yeah, and exactly. When you get to that point where
- 7:20you want to be, you have to understand that there still has
- 7:23to be a consistency. You just have to redefine what
- 7:26that looks like. It's, it's constantly morphing
- 7:30the things that you have to do, but it's it's maintenance.
- 7:33Well and I'll tell you know, some of my clients will say,
- 7:35well, I don't, I want to get off my medication or I want to do
- 7:38this. I said, well, then you have to
- 7:39do something consistently and practice at it to change the
- 7:43need for the medication. You know, whatever that is, you
- 7:46know, then you know, then you talk with your doctor.
- 7:48What are some of the things they're recommending?
- 7:49That's what are some of the things we can do.
- 7:51And I do have clients who will remain consistent and get off
- 7:55their medication, you know. And you reach that goal and then
- 7:59you have to look at what coping skills are you.
- 8:03Creating in the meantime to where that when you hit, you
- 8:06know a pitfall of some kind that you're able to still stay
- 8:11consistent. Exactly.
- 8:13And I think The thing is is and even when they get to that
- 8:16place, I'll tell them, but you got to keep using the skills
- 8:19that you learned on a consistent basis in order for you to not
- 8:25regress. Yeah, regress is a good word,
- 8:27you know. And so the ones who do it and
- 8:30they remain consistent. It's amazing when you you know
- 8:33when we're having these conversations, they're able to
- 8:36see, but they're able to see that there is an action that's
- 8:39taking place instead of becoming complacent.
- 8:45And I think that's the the biggest thing is we often times
- 8:49we'll fall into complacency because it feels comfortable.
- 8:53It's not a lot of work. Well, and sometimes you have to
- 8:56be able to identify, you know, we've talked about, you know,
- 8:59inconsistencies. Even where it comes to jobs or
- 9:03things like that and the way they deal with things, you know,
- 9:07So I mean you have to learn to identify what the problem is
- 9:11with that. Well, and you know, one of the
- 9:13things that sparked this conversation with us is that I
- 9:17was listening to this interview with one of the Denver Broncos
- 9:21defensive people and apparently one of the them got suspended.
- 9:26And he goes, it's not the rule that it's the problem, it's the
- 9:32consistency with the rule. If you're going to, the rule has
- 9:35to be consistent across the board.
- 9:37So apparently his teammate didn't get a penalty flag but
- 9:43got a suspension. On the other team they got the
- 9:46penalty flag but no suspension. And then he comes back and he
- 9:50said if you're going to have a new rule for us, then make it be
- 9:55consistent because the consistency is what's going to
- 9:58help us. When we don't have that
- 10:00consistency, then we then what it's creating is a mental thing.
- 10:05Exactly. Well, it sends a very mixed
- 10:08message and people don't know how to deal with it that there's
- 10:11not. If there's not a uniform way of
- 10:14dealing with something, then, you know, it throws you off when
- 10:17you're dealing with something like that.
- 10:19And I think The thing is this is people's livelihood, you know,
- 10:22and and that frustration of he made a good point.
- 10:25He goes, then teach us, tell us what we need to do in order to
- 10:32not break to to to follow this rule that you've put into place.
- 10:38And I think we find that often. And I will even hear that in my
- 10:41office over and over and over and over again.
- 10:45You know, it's parents who are not consistent with their
- 10:48parenting. Then they're in here.
- 10:51Well, why? Why is my kid doing this or why
- 10:53is this happening? Are you being consistent?
- 10:56You give in and then the rule no longer applies.
- 11:00Yes, that inconsistency sends a mixed message.
- 11:04So of course, you know, as a kid you want to do what you want to
- 11:07do. You're going to push that
- 11:08envelope if you think there's a possibility that you're going
- 11:12to, you know, be able to get by with it.
- 11:14I always tell the kids I work with, Miss Sharon's like you, I
- 11:17want to do what I want to do when I want to do it.
- 11:21And they'll often ask me, do you get in trouble?
- 11:23I said I can. I have to be consistent with you
- 11:26too, but it's true. And then, you know, on the other
- 11:32side of it, I'm having people in my office who are saying, hey,
- 11:36my boss is not consistent. I don't understand the rules.
- 11:39It keeps changing. So they're in my office, very
- 11:43dysregulated, not because they don't like the job, not because
- 11:46they don't feel like they're even good at the job.
- 11:48But though they start to question, am I even good at what
- 11:51I'm doing? Because I'm doing it the way you
- 11:54told me to, but now something's different.
- 11:55You want this, but you didn't tell me this.
- 11:58So even the more consistently are, the more there's kind of
- 12:03Peace of Mind, I think. Oh yeah, definitely.
- 12:06I think about how much more uniformly an office would run if
- 12:10if you know bosses approached it from that angle and you know it,
- 12:16you see it all the time inconsistencies, but between
- 12:19employees or between different situations and that and that
- 12:22makes it difficult for people because.
- 12:26You're you're not really sure what should be done if we don't
- 12:29have that uniform thing to follow it.
- 12:33It really. I mean I can yeah, cuz I can
- 12:37think back in my life about different times that I thought,
- 12:41I don't know what you're wanting from me.
- 12:42I don't know what this expectation is.
- 12:45So then I spend a lot of time trying to figure out the
- 12:48expectation. And even if I ask the question,
- 12:51it might be, well, today we want you to do this.
- 12:53And then the next day it's, well, maybe you got to do it,
- 12:56this man. And that's very difficult.
- 12:59And you know, one of the things is is, and this is really
- 13:02important to me, is I remain consistent with my clients, the
- 13:06way I interact with them, there's always a consistency.
- 13:09When I worked with kids, I stayed consistent and I don't
- 13:15care how cute they were, if they broke the rule, they broke the
- 13:17rule in my office. So very, it was very rare that a
- 13:22child would break the rule in my office because I was very
- 13:24consistent and I helped them understand the rule first,
- 13:26right. And I always tell people, you
- 13:29know, we have to have a little bit of a ramp up though.
- 13:32You know when you're in a new job and you're learning stuff,
- 13:34you have a ramp up period of time.
- 13:36And I always tell people, so give yourself a little bit of
- 13:40grace on that too. If you're working out, if you're
- 13:44starting a new workout program and say your goal is this, but
- 13:48say you don't meet that goal, that's OK.
- 13:51You're still having an action. And I think that's the biggest
- 13:55thing, is it's the action that we're having.
- 13:58And that consistency is still moving towards that goal.
- 14:03But often times they'll sit there and say, well, I didn't do
- 14:06it, So you know, they throw their hands up and start again.
- 14:08And I mean, I've been guilty of that every once in a while in my
- 14:11past, I think most of us have been.
- 14:13But when we do have that consistency and we get to see
- 14:18the end result. Yeah, that to me is the biggest
- 14:23thing. You know, there are some things
- 14:25you and I are always consistent on.
- 14:29That is our gratitude. Yeah, gratitude statements.
- 14:31And I wish you know more people would understand.
- 14:35Of course you talk about, you know, helping people understand
- 14:38how gratitude rewires the brain and how it helps you to change
- 14:47your point of view on so many things.
- 14:50And how it improves your life. Well and how when you started
- 14:55out sometimes it's so interesting because when I do
- 14:58this with my clients and I'll see them go blank and they're
- 15:05like you don't have anything to be granted.
- 15:07And they'll what they're doing is they're trying to think of
- 15:09this grand statement or what am I supposed to say, oh, I'm
- 15:14grateful for my children even though they just pissed you off
- 15:175 minutes ago and you're really ticked off at them and you think
- 15:20there's that I don't want to be grateful or whatever my spouse
- 15:23or my friend or whatever. And I think that's part of the
- 15:26other thing is that there's that gratitude is for everything.
- 15:33It was something that when we first started it was the
- 15:37practice of it, you know and with the more we practice the
- 15:40more consistent. Now we do it every morning and
- 15:44we do it every night before we go to bed.
- 15:46It is part of our practice. We don't skip that.
- 15:50No. And the consistency of it, I
- 15:53feel, I feel that consistency. I feel how following through has
- 16:01had that benefit. Exactly.
- 16:03It creates that positive energy in your life around you know so
- 16:09many things and being able to have gratitude even for the
- 16:14lessons and all of that. It's really important,
- 16:18Absolutely. You know, another thing that we
- 16:20have really worked on and and are more consistent on is our
- 16:24eating. We missed that ship a lot and
- 16:29the beginning we like going along.
- 16:31We're doing so good. And then boop.
- 16:34That's it's another thing that's maintenance throughout your
- 16:36life. So you'll still have moments
- 16:38where you'll think I can go back in time and and have that
- 16:42whatever it was I used to eat. And then you realize that was a
- 16:46bad idea. Yeah, that lack of consistency
- 16:49in that instance really shows you because you're you don't
- 16:53feel good. Once again, it's those things of
- 16:56how do we be consistent. And even when we started this
- 17:00podcast that everything was you got to be consistent, you got to
- 17:03be consistent, you got to be consistent.
- 17:05And so we have worked to be consistent and I feel like we do
- 17:09that and hopefully people appreciate the fact that we have
- 17:14that consistency and we've we've always said if it's that one
- 17:18person who's listening to us and waiting for us to put out the
- 17:20podcast, then that's what we do, we do it.
- 17:24If it's for that one person 1000, it doesn't matter because
- 17:28that one person is expecting that consistency from us.
- 17:32You know, that's usually Sandra. We appreciate you.
- 17:38Yeah. When's your next podcast coming
- 17:39out? What's going to be about?
- 17:41And I love that about her. She is.
- 17:44There's others, but we know she's consistent because we
- 17:46actually talk with her about it, you know, But we talk with her,
- 17:51even we we talk with our friends about consistency.
- 17:54We talk about, you know, how do we get where we want to be?
- 17:57You know, we have those conversations with friends.
- 18:00Exactly. And, you know, I mean, sometimes
- 18:03you get overwhelmed because you feel like there's a lot to do
- 18:07when you're trying to achieve something in particular.
- 18:10But it's even in that having the consistency on, you know, if you
- 18:16only have 30 minutes to work on it today, OK, do that.
- 18:19And if it only comes down to, hey, I need to get this e-mail
- 18:23sent, go ahead and do that. Once you do that one thing, that
- 18:28sense of accomplishment. Is is so empowering.
- 18:32What I see often times is people say it's all or nothing and and
- 18:37everyone's fight could be that way just a little bit not as
- 18:41much anymore when I was younger but it was it was very much all
- 18:44or nothing. If I if I started something I
- 18:46had to finish it If I and it was like but then if you don't even
- 18:49if it caused you to run down or you know whatever that was but
- 18:53understanding you know and you know they say with age comes
- 18:56wisdom you know maybe that's what it is.
- 18:59I don't know but I do find that what I do now is I will do that
- 19:05you know and I'll and if I have you know and people are
- 19:07requesting stuff for me whether it's other but there's doctors
- 19:11requesting records or VA or Social Security.
- 19:13You know whoever it is lawyer whoever you know.
- 19:16I'll always say you know I can't get to it today but I will get
- 19:20to it by the end of the week and then I do my best to do that.
- 19:23It used to be I would stop everything, but if I stopped
- 19:27everything then that would meant I was neglecting something else.
- 19:31So I've learned that there's a balance even in that in in that
- 19:35consistency of telling them you know this and and with
- 19:39consistency comes boundaries because you have to set those
- 19:42boundaries in order to be consistent.
- 19:44You have to be consistent with the boundary.
- 19:46But you know, sometimes people want more time or things like
- 19:50that. And when I work with my clients,
- 19:52they want more from me and I don't have the time I got.
- 19:54I want to be doing this, but I can't do this.
- 19:56So that now they're trying to do both and they're they're
- 19:59spreading themselves too thin. And then it's like we'll set a
- 20:01boundary with that person and let them know, you know, know,
- 20:04on this day and this day, I'm just not available.
- 20:07Yeah, exactly. You know, and oh, being
- 20:10consistent with boundaries is that's a tough one for
- 20:13everybody, I think, right. I think so.
- 20:17Well, I think it's because you you often times people think,
- 20:20well it's only a few minutes, maybe I can just fit that in or
- 20:23you know, yeah, no we're not, you know, then pretty soon it
- 20:27becomes longer than it's supposed to be and things like
- 20:29that and a 5 minute conversation turns into 1/2 hour and you know
- 20:34you didn't get anything done and.
- 20:36And not that sometimes those things aren't important and
- 20:38they're relevant and and we have to do them, you know?
- 20:42But it's when it's it's happening more often and it's
- 20:45really interfering with the things that are important to us
- 20:48and what we're trying to do. So I think that's kind of what
- 20:51I'm saying. And and once again there's a
- 20:53balance in everything and and when we're consistent and it's
- 20:57balanced, it feels right. Definitely you feel like you're
- 21:00in alignment with things even if it's just a minute thing that
- 21:03you got done. It may not seem like a big
- 21:05thing, but like I said, that sense of accomplishment that
- 21:09comes from it, for one thing, and you're one step closer to a
- 21:13goal that you have set. I had just recently posted a
- 21:16meme on 2 Girls on a Pod on Facebook about, you know, set
- 21:20some realistic goals for yourself.
- 21:23You're you are not able to do everything all at once.
- 21:26And that's OK. It's not meant to be that way.
- 21:29We have to learn from the whole process.
- 21:32And you know, I think that's the really big thing is we forget
- 21:35that. Things can be done in baby
- 21:37steps, and you always tell my clients it's baby steps, man, we
- 21:40don't have to. We're not trying to change you
- 21:43overnight. You didn't get here overnight.
- 21:45How can we change you overnight? We just remain consistent with
- 21:49the little steps that we're doing.
- 21:51Each step, we do consistency with it.
- 21:54We're doing little stepping stones each time.
- 21:58Each thing we do is that next stepping stone to what it is
- 22:01that we're wanting, but being consistent on that first baby
- 22:05step. Is important because once I'm
- 22:07consistent on that, then I get to the next one and then the
- 22:10next one and then pretty soon that goal is not so far away and
- 22:13it actually feels more attainable.
- 22:15Yeah, and it requires some self-discipline to be able to.
- 22:19To do that, yeah, I know, but but it does.
- 22:25Well, and it does. And I think The thing is though,
- 22:27is I think sometimes when we feel it, when people think about
- 22:31consistency, I think they think, oh man, that's a lot of work.
- 22:34But I don't think it's a lot of work.
- 22:36I think what it is is that we've been taught that things are
- 22:40hard. And if it's hard, then I don't
- 22:44want to do it. You know, when we, when people
- 22:48are changing their diet, Oh my God, I've got to give this up
- 22:51and give that up. And I always tell people don't
- 22:53talk about what you're giving up, talk about what you're going
- 22:55to start taking on. I guess we're just not
- 22:57conditioned to do that, you know, early on.
- 22:59So I tell people. Think about that.
- 23:02Don't, don't sit there and say, Oh my God, I got to give up
- 23:04this, this and this. And then pretty soon it's like,
- 23:06oh, that's just too much. I'm not going to do any of that.
- 23:08I'm not going to have any flavor in my life exactly.
- 23:11You have to shift your focus on to creating something.
- 23:16And that's what the biggest thing is, is that consistency is
- 23:18about a creation. It's not about letting go of
- 23:23stuff. And I think we, as I think as a
- 23:27human beings, I don't know, we we want to hold on to crap, man.
- 23:30We don't want to give up. We don't want to give up things.
- 23:32I'm not going to be a quitter. I'm not going to be a quitter of
- 23:34those Twinkies or when attached. But I think that that happened
- 23:40so much of the time. And then it's how do we change
- 23:43that verbiage in our head in order to understand that that's
- 23:48not the way this works. You know, we have the ability to
- 23:54replace. And sometimes what we replace it
- 23:58with is so much more valuable and important to us than what we
- 24:03are not having any longer. It becomes something that's so
- 24:07much more fulfilling if we just give it that opportunity.
- 24:10But in order to for you know, for that opportunity, you have
- 24:14to remain consistent. You know, we've talked a little
- 24:16bit about that with you and your sweets, chocolate.
- 24:21You know, that was one thing that was that took you a hot
- 24:24minute. A lot of people will think, you
- 24:27know, you're just you're you're so set that you know that I just
- 24:31don't like that or I won't do this or whatever.
- 24:34Well, as soon as you say that in your mind, you've given yourself
- 24:37that message that you absolutely are not going to.
- 24:39Giving yourself permission, right.
- 24:41And what if you started saying to yourself, well, I'll try it,
- 24:44I'll try it again, I'll try it again.
- 24:46And eventually like I said with with food, I would say it's you
- 24:51change, your palate changes over time, it really does and you
- 24:55have a little bit of power in that if you continue to test the
- 24:59waters. You have to be consistent even
- 25:01with that. Yes, it's try a little bit.
- 25:04I think this year is the year I finally said I don't like
- 25:07pumpkin pie because every year at Thanksgiving I will take a
- 25:13piece, I'll, I'll say OK, maybe, but I keep trying.
- 25:16I say OK, that little piece, that little piece.
- 25:20And guess what? No.
- 25:21I don't like the consistency. I love pumpkin everything else.
- 25:25And this year, there wasn't even a pumpkin pie to be had.
- 25:28So we didn't. So I didn't, Yeah, I didn't have
- 25:29to even sit there and say, Oh my God, because I think I'm at the
- 25:33place now. I've been really consistent
- 25:34trying it, and that consistency has now told me I don't like
- 25:39pumpkin pie, just accept it and move on.
- 25:41Yes. So on to the next.
- 25:43But there are foods, you know, for you eating fruit.
- 25:48Yeah, cuz I that was one of the main things.
- 25:50I hardly ever ate fruit, but it wasn't sweet enough to me
- 25:54because I was used to candy and that kind of stuff.
- 25:58And so to to get away from that, I had to gradually start with
- 26:04the fruits that I already could tolerate and then move up from
- 26:09there. Now I eat different fruits and I
- 26:12will. I I try to choose fruit over
- 26:15anything else for something sweet.
- 26:17But you've had to really work on the consistency with that trying
- 26:20that little bit at a time and you would and you'd scowl and
- 26:25but you know and now you know we do and that's become another
- 26:29thing that we do is we will try a lot of different fruits from
- 26:32different places and stuff like that.
- 26:35Some not so good and some are very strange, but you know we
- 26:37still that's become our thing. You know, we're consistent too.
- 26:42When we go to other countries or even other places, we will try a
- 26:48food from there. You know, just because we want
- 26:52to you know, we want to broaden our views in our palate I guess.
- 26:58Yeah, See what the rave is all about when when you go to Puerto
- 27:03Rico and try the plantains. I am not fond of plantains.
- 27:08So we'll see how that goes when we eventually get over there.
- 27:13And I think it's. And I tell her I said I wonder
- 27:15if it's the way they're made, if they make them different because
- 27:17it's such a staple for them. I don't know, my Puerto Rican
- 27:20client says that. We just haven't eaten, eaten the
- 27:23right way. So then I can believe that I I
- 27:26was the same way about Brussels sprouts.
- 27:27I did not know there was another way besides boiling them, and
- 27:31now that I know they could be made good, I like them so.
- 27:35Yeah, oh, I know. We we went out with some friends
- 27:38for her birthday and we went to a gastropub and she looked at me
- 27:43and she had Brussels sprouts and she goes, you want to try my
- 27:46Brussels sprouts? And I like I go.
- 27:48She goes, oh really? She goes, I thought you said
- 27:50you'd try new things. I said like, God, I hate that
- 27:53they know this shit. So I tried and I actually liked
- 27:56it. So that was my first time I ate
- 27:58a Brussels sprout that I liked, and now I learned how to make
- 28:01them so I can make them at home. Yeah, they're really good.
- 28:04But that's what I mean, you know, it's that, it's that
- 28:06consistency of trying new things too, you know, and.
- 28:09Sometimes it's a hit and miss, but you know, and it takes some
- 28:12self talk. I mean, I like even when I
- 28:15started, you know, a workout program and that I had done that
- 28:18in the past in different ways and stuff like that and
- 28:21eventually just felt overwhelmed I guess and gave up on it.
- 28:25And you know, the last time that I was like, you know, I'm, I'm
- 28:30going to do this and I thought what if I just kept going?
- 28:34What if I just keep going And you know, I feel like I feel so
- 28:39much healthier than I ever have. So I mean, like I say, it takes
- 28:44a lot of self talk sometimes, but.
- 28:47Well, you realize you could be a little more athletic too, which
- 28:49is kind of cool, but you would not have known that had you not
- 28:54stayed consistent with working out and doing yoga stuff and
- 29:01things like that. And I think we sell ourselves
- 29:04short sometimes because. You know, whether somebody else
- 29:07tells us, oh you're not good at that or you know whatever that
- 29:10is and and then we we try it. You know, like you said, we try
- 29:15it and we say, oh, well, they were right.
- 29:16I'm not good at that. So I'm just not going to do it.
- 29:18Or we put that doubt in our mind and then what happens is we
- 29:23stay. We never challenge ourselves and
- 29:26it do that consistency, you know your flexibility and all of that
- 29:31has improved so much and you continue and you're very
- 29:33consistent with it. I'm more consistent.
- 29:36I found what works for me with my work schedule and stuff.
- 29:39Yeah, and she told me she goes, How can you even say that?
- 29:41She goes, you work every other Friday.
- 29:44You have Saturday, Sunday and Monday on.
- 29:49There's some time in there somewhere.
- 29:51God, I hate when she said that to me, that I'm thinking, man,
- 29:54I'm making excuses, but I don't do that now.
- 29:58I do. I really do do my best to get it
- 29:59in. And Wednesday's is hard for me
- 30:01because I'm at my office. And so I don't have time I I
- 30:06just go back-to-back on that day.
- 30:08But I find that I miss it now well and and nobody says you're
- 30:12required to do it seven days a week.
- 30:15So you know, you figure out your schedule and you see what works
- 30:18and and it's the consistency of that, whether it be 3 or 4 days
- 30:23or whatever. But I think that's what I mean
- 30:25though is that when you are consistent with something that
- 30:29day, you're not consistent, you kind of miss it.
- 30:31But if you. I would, I probably wouldn't
- 30:33miss it. But because once again I go
- 30:35back-to-back on those days, I don't.
- 30:38Sometimes I'm there like I got like 2000 steps of that one day
- 30:43I got home and I had like 1700 and be like, Oh my God, you
- 30:47know, what did I do? Sit on my butt all day and then
- 30:49I say, Oh yeah, I do. That's what I do on those days.
- 30:52But then what did you do? You went and you looked at the
- 30:54days that you could do something and when you, like I said, get
- 30:58into consistently doing stuff like that, it's those little
- 31:02steps forward. And it was.
- 31:04And I appreciated you because you really helped me with that
- 31:07because once again, sometimes I can be a little, all or nothing.
- 31:11Well, not as much as I used to be.
- 31:12Remember that? But yeah, so that was kind of
- 31:16something that was really good for me to learn not you don't
- 31:21have to beat yourself up when you don't, when you don't do it
- 31:24or when you don't meet that goal.
- 31:26And then remembering that it's all baby steps and.
- 31:29You know, sometimes I think we just get on this thing where we
- 31:31have this idea and we have this vision of what it is that we're
- 31:34wanting. And we see We.
- 31:37I think sometimes we see the end goal.
- 31:40Yeah, you know, you get fixated on it.
- 31:42Yeah, that. Yeah, that's a good way of
- 31:44putting it, yeah. But you can't, you know, have a
- 31:47a mental implode when you know something happens that that
- 31:51doesn't allow you to maybe get in everything that you wanted to
- 31:54do. I mean, you do have to give
- 31:56yourself that grace. This is her talking.
- 31:58But ask her what happens when she has to miss a workout.
- 32:03Well, I know I I have to work with it.
- 32:05Exactly. It's maintenance.
- 32:07Didn't we say that? I come down and I'm like, oh
- 32:12God, she hasn't worked out. I think I'll go to the other
- 32:15floor. Well, it's because when you, you
- 32:20know, you create that and you want to have that consistency.
- 32:23When you get out of your pattern, you know it really.
- 32:27It throws you off sometimes. And I agree.
- 32:29I think that there's, you know, but it.
- 32:31But I think the really cool thing too is when is when you're
- 32:34doing these things, when you can have somebody to do it with
- 32:38because it helps with that accountability.
- 32:41And and I have a client and that's what he says, he goes, I
- 32:44have to go work out because they're expecting me.
- 32:47But it's it's helped him to remain consistent whether it's
- 32:50hiking or whatever it is. And a lot of times that's what
- 32:53we do. It's like, Oh my goodness, I've
- 32:54got to be consistent because. We we feel an obligation or
- 32:59whatever, whatever it is, it works.
- 33:01You know what I mean? And I don't even know if it's an
- 33:03obligation, but I really do feel like it's an encouragement and
- 33:06and I always feel like you're always encouraging me, you know,
- 33:09to remember to to show myself a little grace to do the thing.
- 33:14Because sometimes my job, you know, even though I work on
- 33:17those three days, I sometimes my job is not done on those days
- 33:21because I'll have other things that I have to attend to.
- 33:24It's it's getting better and. You know, even our consistency
- 33:27with making sure we get our podcast done, because that's
- 33:31super important to us. Exactly.
- 33:33And I know that there have been times, you know, where if we've
- 33:36had to skip a week or something like that, I mean, and it it
- 33:40bothers us if we have to do that.
- 33:41But you know, life happens and and things like that, you know,
- 33:46will come about. But we do our best not to do
- 33:50that. But.
- 33:51And that's why. Because once again, the people
- 33:55who listen. They're important to us and you
- 33:58know if anything we say resonates then we're happy about
- 34:03that you know and you know that and and one of the things is
- 34:08once again that thing of consistency and and I I know we
- 34:11thought about you know it's conversations we had but when I
- 34:14really listened to that football player and just his constant
- 34:18thing of be consistent. Help us.
- 34:22It creates frustration if you don't know what's expected in
- 34:25that. So I mean I think even just
- 34:28being able to identify that piece of it when there is
- 34:31inconsistencies with you know, work or whatever it is that's
- 34:35going to help you. And I think he made a really
- 34:37good point because he said something about, you know, the
- 34:39NFL is all about our mental health, he said.
- 34:42But you know what happens if you're doing that to some young
- 34:45player who does not have that type of support system that this
- 34:48player has? Now what have we done to that
- 34:51person's mental health that that lack of consistency?
- 34:56I'm telling you can mess with our brain so much it wreaks
- 35:00havoc. And then, like I said, I mean,
- 35:02it's even like we do it to ourselves.
- 35:04We talked about, you know, when you get so down on yourself
- 35:08because maybe you've missed something, then you know it
- 35:13doesn't help you advance. When you're talking so
- 35:15negatively to yourself, you end up throwing in the towel.
- 35:19And I mean that's coming from you yourself.
- 35:22But I think when you look at an organization that is not that
- 35:27you're not understanding. So you feel like you're doing
- 35:30what you're supposed to be doing, but now it's not what
- 35:32you're supposed to be doing, then you sit there and say,
- 35:34well, what do you see? What I mean?
- 35:36I can understand why that would that would create some emotion
- 35:39in that person. I would think definitely, and
- 35:41that's why I'm saying I think it's important for individuals
- 35:44to be able to recognize when that's happening that that is
- 35:47the issue because you're, you know, you get frustrated with
- 35:50yourself. But you know, if it's the
- 35:52inconsistency of an employer or something like that, if you
- 35:56identify that, I think it's gonna help you.
- 35:59And I always tell people you know have a voice in those
- 36:02situations when and I work with that been a theme of mine for
- 36:05the last two or three weeks with some of my clients and and it's
- 36:09the inconsistency and and they're in my office they're
- 36:11frustrated they feel like they're not good employees.
- 36:16Why can't I understand why am I not listening?
- 36:18You know, and it's not that when they explain it exact and and
- 36:24you know, they'll say and people say, well, how do you know
- 36:26they're explaining it, right. Because sometimes they have
- 36:29emails or texts they're trying to understand, did I
- 36:32misunderstand this? Am I doing this right, You know,
- 36:36and that's The thing is they're not in in that once again, that
- 36:40inconsistency. So I see how that plays out on
- 36:44somebody's mental health. And once again, all I tell them
- 36:48is do what you have the power and control to do.
- 36:51Be consistent with your thoughts and how you're interpreting
- 36:54things and have your voice and go talk to people about it if
- 36:58it's not working. So I really appreciated this
- 37:00football player being out there and and and giving that message
- 37:04of be consistent. We want to learn, teach us, and
- 37:10we will gladly do that, you know.
- 37:13And often times, how long? How hard is it to teach somebody
- 37:17it? It's not exactly even like we
- 37:19were talking about with kids. They don't have the vocabulary
- 37:22to say that. And you'll, you'll see that play
- 37:25out. Those frustrations of that,
- 37:27those inconsistencies. You'll see it play out in
- 37:30different ways because they can't communicate that to you in
- 37:33any other way. But you know, I have to tell
- 37:35you, one of the things that is so cool to me is when I have
- 37:38those parents, and I do I I have some of the most amazing parents
- 37:41I work with and when. They get it and they start using
- 37:45that consistency with their kids.
- 37:47And I'll always tell them it's going to be hard at 1st and
- 37:51you're going to want to throw in the towel.
- 37:53But I promise you if you remain consistent, they'll come to me
- 37:56and they'll say, Oh my God, when you said that it would get
- 37:58easier, we did not really believe you.
- 38:01But now life is easy. Our home is you know pretty
- 38:05mellow and and we're enjoying things and and but it was that
- 38:08consistency and that follow through.
- 38:12And I love when I get to hear that, and I get to hear that
- 38:15often in my office because I have some of the most amazing
- 38:18clients who really do follow through, have that consistency
- 38:23and we see a lot of growth in them.
- 38:27And that's how I know it works, you know, because it's it's
- 38:30something I do in my practice and it's something that we do in
- 38:34our in our personal life and being able to see that
- 38:38consistency play out is amazing. And to see that sigh of relief
- 38:45that, Oh my goodness, this is better, things run so much more
- 38:51smoothly. Think of something.
- 38:53Just pick one thing, you know, Like I said, if it's something,
- 38:56pick one thing to be consistent with.
- 38:58Once you're consistent with that enough and you see the success
- 39:01that you feel and how it changes things.
- 39:04Then you can add more stuff in and it's like, oh, you know
- 39:07what, that's not too bad. Let me try something else.
- 39:10And I think that's what's really important and I think that's
- 39:12what's really relevant. It's what that's what it leads
- 39:15to. It seems like you know it spills
- 39:17into other parts of your life because you're able to to create
- 39:22that. And the more we create and the
- 39:24more we sustain it and nurture it, because that's what
- 39:27consistency is. It's nurturing a piece of us or
- 39:30it's nurturing those things that we want.
- 39:33You know that are important and valuable for us.
- 39:34So you know, I guess our statement for today is be
- 39:39consistent. Consistency is key.
