- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast.
- 0:24Feed if. You haven't done that yet.
- 0:26Feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28When you're ready, let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:43John chapter 6, Jesus shares some of his most difficult and
- 0:46controversial teachings. Specifically, it's in this
- 0:49chapter in verses 53 through 58 that Jesus tells those following
- 0:53Him that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and
- 0:56drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
- 1:00He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I
- 1:03will raise him up on the last day, For my flesh is true food,
- 1:06and my blood is true drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks
- 1:10my blood abides in me, and I in Him.
- 1:13As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the
- 1:15Father, so he who eats me, He also will live because of me.
- 1:20This is the bread which came down out of heaven, not as the
- 1:23fathers ate and died. He who eats this bread will live
- 1:26forever. It would be an understatement to
- 1:29say this teaching was not well received.
- 1:31Many of his followers said, quote, this is a difficult
- 1:34statement, who can listen to it? And shortly thereafter, many of
- 1:38those who were following Jesus left him.
- 1:40Now Jesus was obviously not advocating for cannibalism.
- 1:44He was not literally inviting his followers to eat his flesh
- 1:47and drink his blood. Rather, in language echoed
- 1:51during Jesus Last Supper with his disciples, and echoed every
- 1:54time you and I partake in the Lord's Supper as we are gathered
- 1:56with our church body. Jesus was saying that it would
- 2:00be through faith in the crucified Savior, faith in the
- 2:03broken body and spilled blood of Jesus, that men might be saved.
- 2:09Jesus words were divisive, though they were words that
- 2:11split his followers, words that did not add to his following,
- 2:15but subtracted from it. Jesus is unfazed, though He's
- 2:19made clear in this chapter that His true followers will follow
- 2:21Him no matter the circumstances, that those whom the Father has
- 2:24given him will endure to the end.
- 2:27And in this very chapter, in the midst of the crowds abandoning
- 2:30Jesus and even those who have followed him up to this point
- 2:32leaving Him, we see that reality played out that Christ will hold
- 2:36those who have truly believed him.
- 2:39Listen to the exchange that takes place between Jesus and
- 2:41Peter at the end of the chapter after these hard teachings
- 2:45starting in verse 67. So Jesus said to the 12, you do
- 2:49not want to go away also, do you?
- 2:51Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go?
- 2:55You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come
- 2:58to know that you are the Holy One of God.
- 3:02Peter lays it out there. The road is rough, but where
- 3:05else can we go? If Jesus is the Son of God, and
- 3:09He is, then all of our eggs are in his basket.
- 3:12Our life is staked on His. Our future is in His hands.
- 3:17And here is where it gets real for us.
- 3:19When we submit to Jesus, it cannot be halfway.
- 3:22It cannot be submission until the road gets hard.
- 3:25It cannot be submission until we meet a teaching of Christ That's
- 3:28difficult. If Jesus is God, then we must
- 3:32submit to him fully. So when we meet those passages
- 3:35in the Bible that are convicting and hard to obey, there's no
- 3:39option to keep submitting to Jesus but to ignore his
- 3:41commands. If we are his followers, then we
- 3:44follow him no matter what. We submit to him as Lord,
- 3:47whether obedience is easy or not.
- 3:50So ask yourself, is there anything that would make you
- 3:53walk away? Is there anything that would
- 3:56cause you to stop pursuing, to stop following Jesus rooted out
- 4:01and recognize like Peter, Lord, to whom shall we go?
- 4:05You have words of eternal life.
