- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts chapter 13, we again see
- 0:45a major move of the Holy Spirit, this time at the Church of
- 0:48Antioch. Remember this is where Paul and
- 0:51Barnabas had been ministering after Barnabas was sent by the
- 0:53church at Jerusalem to check in on this new church and he then
- 0:56called Paul to help teach these brothers and sisters.
- 0:59Well now as we enter chapter 13, God is going to call this church
- 1:03into something even greater. Listen to the first 3 verses of
- 1:06this chapter. Now there were at Antioch in the
- 1:08church that was there prophets and teachers, Barnabas and
- 1:12Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene and Manaean
- 1:16who'd been brought up with Herod the tetrarch and Saul while they
- 1:19were ministering to the Lord and fasting.
- 1:21The Holy Spirit said, set apart from me, Barnabas and Saul for
- 1:24the work to which I've called them.
- 1:27Then when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on
- 1:29them, they sent them away. Now there is so much here even
- 1:33in the list of the prophets and teachers at the Church of
- 1:35Antioch. How it is that a childhood
- 1:37friend of Herod, a former persecutor of the church, a man
- 1:41whose nickname was black, likely because of his African descent,
- 1:45and the son of encouragement could not just get along but
- 1:47serve shoulder to shoulder in ministry at Antioch is a
- 1:50testament in and of itself to the unifying, barrier breaking
- 1:53power of the gospel. These men, whose backgrounds
- 1:56could not have been any more different, were united by
- 1:58something far greater, the grace of God through Jesus Christ.
- 2:02So if you get nothing else from this devotion, at least get
- 2:05this. You have much more in common
- 2:07with your fellow believers then you have differences with them.
- 2:10If you've been saved, you've been adopted into a new family,
- 2:13best to go ahead and start loving your brothers and sisters
- 2:16in that new forever family now. But let's not stop there.
- 2:19These men are not just working together.
- 2:21We see them ministering to the Lord and fasting.
- 2:24They're in prayerful worship. They're desiring that God would
- 2:27direct their steps. And when He does, they're not
- 2:29surprised. But here's what's wild.
- 2:32God answers their prayer by calling them to set apart and
- 2:35send out Paul and Barnabas for a work that God had prepared for
- 2:38them. Paul and Barnabas, this is the
- 2:41A-Team, and God is calling them away from Antioch.
- 2:45God's response to their ministry and fasting to Him is that they
- 2:48send out their best and brightest to a new thing.
- 2:52This sounds so counter to the way that we naturally think.
- 2:55Why mess up a good thing? Why break up a group that's
- 2:58working so well together? The short answer, God's plans
- 3:02for the gospel and even His plans for the church at Antioch
- 3:04are much, much bigger than just Antioch.
- 3:07God is telling a story. He is unveiling a mystery, not
- 3:11just locally, not just regionally, but to all the
- 3:13world. He is revealing Himself to all
- 3:15the nations and He is inviting the church at Antioch to
- 3:18participate in that. And do not think this is not
- 3:22costly for Antioch. Can you imagine?
- 3:25Can you imagine 2 leading elders at your church, your main
- 3:27teaching pastor letting you know that God is calling them out to
- 3:30a new work? This is tough.
- 3:33This is going to sting at Antioch.
- 3:35But to these prophets and teachers that we met at the
- 3:37beginning of the chapter, this was no surprise.
- 3:40This was not something they pushed back against.
- 3:42No, it takes them just one verse to lay their hands on Paul and
- 3:45Barnabas and send them away. They positioned themselves in
- 3:48God's presence, ready to obey. And when the instruction came,
- 3:52there was no delay. I wonder what our lives would
- 3:55look like if we had this attitude like the leaders of the
- 3:58church at Antioch have. What would our lives be like if
- 4:01we kept our yes on the table? What would God do with our
- 4:04faithfulness? What would He do with our
- 4:06willingness? And yes, it may make no sense to
- 4:09us, but God is telling a much bigger story than we can wrap
- 4:13our heads around. Why not live like these men at
- 4:16Antioch? Why not hand the Lord the keys
- 4:18to your life, to your family, to your everything, and see what He
- 4:23does with them?
