- 1:59Speaker 1: you can see every Sunday Night starting in season three,
- 2:02Speaker 1: of Showtime's original series, the shot where he plays the
- 2:06Speaker 1: character Emmit Washington. Please welcome to money making conversation, Jacob,
- 2:10Speaker 1: A lotta more, Jacob, What I was saying your name? Man?
- 2:15Speaker 1: I had to started laughing, Man because that character Man, Man,
- 2:21Speaker 1: can I Jacob? Can I trust him? Man? Can I
- 2:25Speaker 1: trust Can I trust him? It? No, Man, can't trust him?
- 2:30Speaker 1: But as a as the beauty of that character, the
- 2:33Speaker 1: frustration of your mom. But let's talk about your career, man,
- 2:36Speaker 1: because you've been in the game. You're young guy, and
- 2:39Speaker 1: successes came your way and a lot of people my
- 2:42Speaker 1: my career as a producer, writer, manager, over the years,
- 2:44Speaker 1: I've a lot of success and still having success and
- 2:47Speaker 1: sending young talent like you come into the game. Can
- 2:50Speaker 1: you talk about how you got started? Jacob? Yeah? Well, Um,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know, music random you know, runs in my family.
- 2:58Speaker 1: My dad of my uncle's uh you know, seeing gospel
- 3:01Speaker 1: music and Kimny Lottimore was my cousin, my grandfather and
- 3:05Speaker 1: my uncle Joe rest in Peace, who you know, had
- 3:08Speaker 1: their own group when they were younger. Um, so I
- 3:11Speaker 1: just grew up in a house full of musicians and
- 3:14Speaker 1: singers and I was always you know, just hearing acapella
- 3:18Speaker 1: and and just I was absorbing so much as a child.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And then I would see you know, performances and music
- 3:24Speaker 1: videos and limos being parked outside to you know, pick
- 3:29Speaker 1: up my dad and uncles for them to go to
- 3:31Speaker 1: l A when they were signed an m C A
- 3:33Speaker 1: and the other two thousand's, And I was just I've
- 3:36Speaker 1: just seen this lifestyle. I was just like, what's this?
- 3:38Speaker 1: You know what I want to do it? You know
- 3:40Speaker 1: what I mean, But you gotta have a talent to
- 3:42Speaker 1: do it, Jacob gotta have the talent to do it exactly.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So I was just I was absorbing. I was I
- 3:47Speaker 1: started practicing, you know, as early as six years old,
- 3:51Speaker 1: got into the studio at nine years old. So when
- 3:55Speaker 1: you when you when did you realize you had the talent?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Because everything's cute you when you're a young kid. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: people he can dance, dance for the song, Mamy, dance
- 4:03Speaker 1: for the song. Jake would come on, come on, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: then on you realize he has something, he has a gift.
- 4:09Speaker 1: When did that realization come on? Come come to you?
- 4:11Speaker 1: And the people surrounding you, Um, I think it was
- 4:17Speaker 1: it was more so like I think they seen how
- 4:21Speaker 1: serious I was taking it beyond just um, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: just wanting to sing. I feel like my uncle brought
- 4:29Speaker 1: up something really funny, um and it sounds like something
- 4:32Speaker 1: I would say. He said I was about seven or
- 4:34Speaker 1: eight years old or something like that. And then my
- 4:36Speaker 1: uncle was like, Jake, look, look, Jake, you want some McDonald's.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And he said that. I said, uh uh nah nah,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I gotta be on stage, and you know, I'm about
- 4:47Speaker 1: to do this artist thing, so I gotta watch my figure.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I can't eat McDonald And he said he died live,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and he was like what he was like, figure, I
- 5:00Speaker 1: was just like and for me to know that I
- 5:02Speaker 1: love to work out so much and I like to
- 5:04Speaker 1: I like to generally staying solid shape. So I was
- 5:08Speaker 1: just like, I was like, I don't remember that, but
- 5:10Speaker 1: it definitely sounds like something I would say. And I
- 5:12Speaker 1: just think that I just took it so serious. I
- 5:15Speaker 1: was working up rehearsing on my own, and I was
- 5:18Speaker 1: studying so many different performers and and and listening to
- 5:22Speaker 1: how many songs. The Temptations movie was one of my
- 5:24Speaker 1: favorite movies, and uh B two K was one of
- 5:27Speaker 1: my favorite groups. I was just in front of the television,
- 5:30Speaker 1: just absorbing so much of the entertainment of it. I
- 5:35Speaker 1: was just like, I think I think they would just like,
- 5:37Speaker 1: let's put him in the studio, just just do it.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And so your education was just your just your life, right,
- 5:44Speaker 1: just watching your family, watching people around you being successful,
- 5:47Speaker 1: realizing that you know, that's an option that was kind
- 5:50Speaker 1: of like you mentored by the opportunity because you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: if your father is an engineer, you might watch how
- 5:57Speaker 1: he goes to work every day. You become an engineer
- 5:59Speaker 1: off somebody who cheek higher education exactly exactly as as
- 6:02Speaker 1: a child, you absorbed you know what your parents are
- 6:06Speaker 1: doing and their lifestyleed living, and you sort of you know,
- 6:09Speaker 1: either you fall in love with it or you don't.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But I just happen to really to really fall in
- 6:13Speaker 1: love with it and uh and want to do it
- 6:15Speaker 1: and also just take it to the next level with
- 6:17Speaker 1: my acting career and and and and dive into so
- 6:21Speaker 1: many different other things. So it was it's been a
- 6:24Speaker 1: huge blessing. I think, you know, our family is real
- 6:26Speaker 1: proud just to you know, see me like squreaming around
- 6:29Speaker 1: in the living room, dancing and singing all day. So
- 6:32Speaker 1: you know, my my grandfather said, man, you didn't really
- 6:34Speaker 1: dance and shake yourself into a career. Like, why that
- 6:40Speaker 1: sounds like a grandfather's statement, right, yeah, something about yourself. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 1: he didn't. He didn't. Yeah. He always say that too,
- 6:48Speaker 1: you know, he like they always repeat, he said all
- 6:52Speaker 1: the stuff. Yeah, so you know that that's really at
- 6:55Speaker 1: you a good looking guy. So how did the dancing
- 6:57Speaker 1: come about? I got the singing and then that, and
- 6:59Speaker 1: if you good singer, sometimes you can transition to the acting.
- 7:02Speaker 1: How did the dancing became a major part of your portfolio? Oh,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you know, my dad got real good rhythms, and my
- 7:08Speaker 1: mom actually used to dance too when she was young.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So uh, and then I just, I don't know, I
- 7:14Speaker 1: just fell in love with like dancing. I don't know.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think I started absorbing myself around dancers too. When
- 7:21Speaker 1: I once I got to Atlanta, I started going to
- 7:24Speaker 1: these like dance competitions. It was a thing that we're
- 7:28Speaker 1: doing at this club. It was called dance Invasion. Young
- 7:32Speaker 1: kids would be battling, and you know, you just absorbed
- 7:35Speaker 1: around all these great dances here in Atlanta, and I
- 7:37Speaker 1: just started making friends with them, having ciphers, having dance
- 7:41Speaker 1: battles and just being around dancers, you know, and then
- 7:44Speaker 1: they were like yo, like and I was taking as
- 7:47Speaker 1: classes every now and then, but mostly it was just
- 7:49Speaker 1: like really just just being around and man, yeah, like everything,
- 7:53Speaker 1: every everything I wanted to do, I just put my
- 7:56Speaker 1: mind to it, and I just I didn't you know,
- 7:58Speaker 1: it was it's it's been dope. You know. The great
- 8:00Speaker 1: thing about I was speaking of Jacob Lattimore, one of
- 8:02Speaker 1: the stars of the Incredible or Showtime original series To
- 8:05Speaker 1: Shine Us as a family show, it's a community show.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Is a sometimes the uh, the realism of the series
- 8:13Speaker 1: can uh make you angry, make you wish the characters
- 8:16Speaker 1: will do something differently and your roof for people then
- 8:19Speaker 1: they then they fail you. But but I want to
- 8:22Speaker 1: move back a little bit when I first saw you
- 8:24Speaker 1: and the movie Slip, when you played the Magician Street Magician,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and that was a starring role for you, Jacob. You know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: that's a lot to to to realize. Talk about that opportunity,
- 8:38Speaker 1: how it was presented to you, and then the whole
- 8:40Speaker 1: process of taking that that that that knowledge is this
- 8:44Speaker 1: movie is you're starting in and you have to carry
- 8:47Speaker 1: the weight of this movie. Yeah, it was actually know,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think I thought about it that
- 8:54Speaker 1: hard because I think my second film, Black Nativity, was
- 8:58Speaker 1: so the schedule was so heavy and the amount of
- 9:02Speaker 1: scenes I was doing, you know, next to Likene Forest
- 9:04Speaker 1: Whitaker and like Angela Bashet and memorizing all these things
- 9:08Speaker 1: that startpower, that startpower put pressure on you right there,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you just said to start. Yeah, that experience alone was
- 9:16Speaker 1: so heavy for me. And uh so by the time
- 9:19Speaker 1: I got to a film like Slight, which I filmed
- 9:22Speaker 1: Black Nativity for about a month and a half, I
- 9:24Speaker 1: feel Slight in two weeks, which was Yeah. Yeah, Slight
- 9:29Speaker 1: was an independent film for two hundred and fifty grand,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like it was fantastic. Man,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna ta man, I'm weighing on Slight two. It
- 9:39Speaker 1: was that good to me. And the characterizations and the
- 9:42Speaker 1: emotional it was. It was what I'm saying, is that
- 9:45Speaker 1: two weeks, man, that's a lot of emotional range that
- 9:48Speaker 1: you showed in that big screen opperdate the debate right there.
- 9:53Speaker 1: That was amazing what you were doing, man, And it
- 9:55Speaker 1: was just two weeks. And that's how independent productions usually happened.
- 9:58Speaker 1: They don't have the budget, the catering, the crew that
- 10:00Speaker 1: ain't around, and usually say, man, look I'm a squeeze
- 10:03Speaker 1: is in my schedules, but this ain't my real moneys
- 10:06Speaker 1: and that's how But but it allowed me to see
- 10:08Speaker 1: you as a as a really brilliant young actor. M yeah, man,
- 10:13Speaker 1: I appreciate that. It was it was incredible, you know. Um.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I was out in l A and was so was
- 10:19Speaker 1: so funny about Slight. Slight was the only film that
- 10:22Speaker 1: I had booked that year, and I was kind of
- 10:25Speaker 1: stressing out man, and be honest, like, I was auditioning
- 10:28Speaker 1: like crazy, and I was getting a lot of nose.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You know. It was just like you're a star, but
- 10:34Speaker 1: we don't feel like you're right for this role. And
- 10:37Speaker 1: I kept getting that that in so like yeah, you're
- 10:40Speaker 1: a star, and Jacobs a star, but it's just I
- 10:43Speaker 1: don't know, he's maybe too cool for this one, or
- 10:45Speaker 1: like maybe he's too much of a star for this role.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And I was auditioning for like, you know, the like
- 10:52Speaker 1: the second role from next to the leading role, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: they were like, well, he's probably outshining the star. He's
- 10:57Speaker 1: just just to start, you know. I was just and
- 11:00Speaker 1: was like, man, come on, man, book me in the movie.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm trying to work, you know, you know, so, uh,
- 11:06Speaker 1: that's that's that's where my mind was. And then, uh,
- 11:09Speaker 1: I remember we took Slight to Sundance the topic of
- 11:13Speaker 1: the next year, and then I got a phone call
- 11:16Speaker 1: saying that I booked Collaiteral Beauty with Will Smith, Food
- 11:19Speaker 1: to New York. Two weeks later worked with will after
- 11:23Speaker 1: the Will Smith movie. Uh, they said, uh, You're gonna
- 11:27Speaker 1: work with William H. Macy Um on this independent film
- 11:31Speaker 1: called Crystal. And then after that I booked Detroit. So
- 11:35Speaker 1: I did those three films and one year after a
- 11:38Speaker 1: year prior of just barely working, you know, because Slight
- 11:42Speaker 1: was only two weeks of that year. And uh so
- 11:45Speaker 1: I was like, I was really just stressing out, to
- 11:47Speaker 1: be honest, But how did you maintain How did you
- 11:49Speaker 1: was the family player role in that? Did your faith
- 11:52Speaker 1: player role in that? Being able to overcome that frustration
- 11:55Speaker 1: of people saying what they what they know you're talented,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but hey, we're gonna pass on this one. Rich dude
- 12:01Speaker 1: check to dude, checks on coming in. Food needs to
- 12:04Speaker 1: be in your billy, what's going on right there? And yeah, honestly, man, Um,
- 12:09Speaker 1: I was standing with one of my best friends. Actually
- 12:11Speaker 1: just saw him a few days ago. His name is
- 12:13Speaker 1: Decor Darden. I stayed out with in l A. With
- 12:16Speaker 1: him at his apartment. He had like a guest from
- 12:18Speaker 1: bathroom and I would just sort of renting out. I
- 12:21Speaker 1: was paying him monthly, and I was just like, man,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you know, I'm coming out to l A. I want
- 12:25Speaker 1: to audition. I just want to get out here and grind.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And then um, yeah, like he was really really supported.
- 12:32Speaker 1: He's like, you know, a really good friend of mine.
- 12:35Speaker 1: We actually met on the Major Running set actually pays
- 12:38Speaker 1: he plays fried Pen and uh and Mays running all
- 12:41Speaker 1: three major runners actually and uh yeah, he's he's like
- 12:45Speaker 1: a really supportive friend. Because I was away from my
- 12:47Speaker 1: mom and my dad, I really wasn't. That was like
- 12:49Speaker 1: my first time really being out on my own, you
- 12:51Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Almost like going to college. It's
- 12:53Speaker 1: like going to college. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was out
- 12:55Speaker 1: there on my own, you know. So, Um, I just
- 12:58Speaker 1: had a great support system even with my friends, you
- 13:01Speaker 1: know what I mean, I was choosing my friends wisely.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I was choosing you know, I was choosing to you know,
- 13:06Speaker 1: called my family and just but the movie, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and they were giving me a lot of um just encouragement,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and I just always knew I was gonna book something
- 13:13Speaker 1: because I feel like even though they were saying no,
- 13:15Speaker 1: they were saying I was a star, which which felt good.
- 13:19Speaker 1: But I was just like, man, I need some work.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But I knew something was gonna come, and I knew
- 13:23Speaker 1: the right role was gonna man uh. And I just
- 13:26Speaker 1: knew a lot of people saw something in me. And
- 13:28Speaker 1: my agents were like, look, this happens all the time
- 13:30Speaker 1: sometimes because a year of nose and then like the
- 13:33Speaker 1: next year could be just full of work. So and
- 13:36Speaker 1: be ready. That Hollywood is is to be ready to
- 13:39Speaker 1: be at. That's that's to start lying being at. And
- 13:41Speaker 1: when they said go be ready, that's what Hollywood all about.
- 13:44Speaker 1: It could be frustrating, but it also could be it
- 13:46Speaker 1: also could be like, Wow, this is why I want
- 13:49Speaker 1: to do this. And one of the movies you played
- 13:51Speaker 1: in with Trot Detroit, when I look at the civil
- 13:54Speaker 1: unrest now that we all are experiencing now and doing
- 13:57Speaker 1: the time of pandemic, you know you did that what
- 14:00Speaker 1: you did that movie prior to the George Floyd and
- 14:02Speaker 1: all the situations that are but bri on the Taylor
- 14:05Speaker 1: and all these things that have been going on on
- 14:07Speaker 1: a regular bation that we talked to us about, when
- 14:09Speaker 1: you do you look back on that movie now and
- 14:11Speaker 1: think about what's going on right now in the in
- 14:13Speaker 1: the world today, not only just in US, the world
- 14:16Speaker 1: in general. Oh yeah, absolutely, Like, um, you know, we
- 14:22Speaker 1: we thought we thought that film would really Obviously I
- 14:26Speaker 1: think the longevity of it still speaks values, but we
- 14:29Speaker 1: really thought it would go. It would it would blow
- 14:32Speaker 1: up much bigger than it did, you know what I mean,
- 14:36Speaker 1: because we were touching on something so so relevant. But
- 14:39Speaker 1: I think that the reality of it was no one
- 14:41Speaker 1: really wanted to go to a movie theater and see
- 14:44Speaker 1: something that they're seeing on CNN every day, and uh,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you know, and it was just like it was hard
- 14:50Speaker 1: for people to watch it. Man, it was like it
- 14:52Speaker 1: really was hard. I would you can tell you that
- 14:54Speaker 1: I watched that at the house. It was difficult because
- 14:56Speaker 1: it was the truth. It was the truth. Yeah, people
- 14:59Speaker 1: are man, I need a cigarette and I need a drink,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you know, people are leaving the theater and that was
- 15:05Speaker 1: just like I was like, wow, like it's and and
- 15:09Speaker 1: people come out of crying, they would come out of hugging,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and it was it was really emotional. So the impact
- 15:15Speaker 1: was was so dope. And uh, just to to know
- 15:18Speaker 1: that film still speaks volumes and the speaking values over
- 15:21Speaker 1: these years and it will speak volumes after we're going
- 15:25Speaker 1: and after our careers are done, you know. So I'm
- 15:26Speaker 1: happy I was able to get a film like that
- 15:29Speaker 1: under my built and I usually try to do a
- 15:31Speaker 1: variety of different films. Well you do, you know, and uh,
- 15:34Speaker 1: the the ability to be able to go from you know,
- 15:37Speaker 1: because Maze Runner was a sci fi you know, and
- 15:39Speaker 1: then you had you know, ride Along with a comedy
- 15:42Speaker 1: and Detrot was just dramatic. And then of course Slight
- 15:46Speaker 1: a true star and Roll to me, that was to me,
- 15:48Speaker 1: that was the movie that said it for me. As
- 15:51Speaker 1: a fan of Jacob Lattimore, I became a fan Jacob.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I won't know Slight too? Can you do it? Go
- 15:55Speaker 1: find me and something brother, something something, man, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: it's so funny. I reached out to the director Um
- 16:02Speaker 1: and I was h J. D. Dillon. I was like, hey, man,
- 16:05Speaker 1: what you want you think about a flight too? He
- 16:06Speaker 1: was like, I just don't know if I'm interested, and
- 16:12Speaker 1: he's like, I just want to do I want to
- 16:14Speaker 1: do something different with you. Man, I didn't want to
- 16:16Speaker 1: do like something different, you know. He said, I'm working
- 16:19Speaker 1: on this different film. I want to send you the script.
- 16:21Speaker 1: So I think for him it was flight was like
- 16:25Speaker 1: a step for him and you know, a phase for him,
- 16:27Speaker 1: like he created a story. But I think, um, I think, yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 1: he just he just loves what we did already. Absolutely,

- 18:32Speaker 1: E R dot Ai, no argument. I'm just as a producer,
- 18:35Speaker 1: as a guy who looks at the talented person and
- 18:37Speaker 1: I see how sequels do well, and I see this
- 18:39Speaker 1: is a it's a lot of things could have come
- 18:41Speaker 1: out of that series, a Netflix series, uh you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: uh the three series a lot because it was just
- 18:47Speaker 1: that good. It was just that personal and you and
- 18:50Speaker 1: you play a young character which I felt was relatable
- 18:53Speaker 1: to what's going on in the Marvel universe right now.
- 18:56Speaker 1: But but right now, right now, you're starting in the shot,
- 19:00Speaker 1: how did that come about? And this character. I'm gonna
- 19:02Speaker 1: tell you something, man, I don't know if I um,
- 19:07Speaker 1: if I was your big brother, I'll hit you in
- 19:09Speaker 1: the chest, dad center in your chest and can tell
- 19:14Speaker 1: you get your life together. Boy. It ain't in your parents,
- 19:18Speaker 1: Your life ain't in your parts. It's in your hat
- 19:21Speaker 1: above yourself. So tell us how that character came about. Honestly, man,
- 19:27Speaker 1: it was it was I think auditioned maybe three or
- 19:31Speaker 1: three times. Uh. Once was on tape, then I flew
- 19:35Speaker 1: out to l a um had. It was like maybe
- 19:39Speaker 1: four other people auditioning for Emmett, and they were kind
- 19:42Speaker 1: of throwing this in and out the room with different
- 19:44Speaker 1: um actresses that we're gonna play the mother row and
- 19:49Speaker 1: uh I met Yalanda, who who's casting now? And I
- 19:52Speaker 1: was seeing her and and I just didn't know what
- 19:54Speaker 1: was going on. I just wanted to go in there
- 19:56Speaker 1: and just you know, be myself. And I have a
- 19:57Speaker 1: lot of personality, and you know, luckily it came out
- 20:01Speaker 1: of my way, and I think we got right to work,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and I just I fell in love with it. It
- 20:06Speaker 1: was like, you know, I felt I really I was
- 20:08Speaker 1: really nervous, to be honest, because obviously, um different Chicago
- 20:12Speaker 1: projects hadn't really like nailed you know the city. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: they didn't really a lot of people didn't you know,
- 20:18Speaker 1: appreciate some of the prior projects that were by Chicago.
- 20:22Speaker 1: And I was just like, man, we gotta we gotta
- 20:24Speaker 1: be dope, we gotta be fly, we gotta be fresh,
- 20:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I was. I remember you
- 20:29Speaker 1: right down the road from you, right up the road
- 20:31Speaker 1: from Chicago, man walking. Yeah. And that was the beauty too,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know, to just like be able to you know,
- 20:38Speaker 1: work where my family could kind of you know, drive
- 20:41Speaker 1: and come see me too. It was you know, it's
- 20:43Speaker 1: only an hour by hour and Chicago five very familiar
- 20:47Speaker 1: with Chicago. We're gonna talk about that a little bit.
- 20:49Speaker 1: But you know the beauty of this when you said
- 20:51Speaker 1: keep it real, like I lived in Chicago five years
- 20:53Speaker 1: from and uh, and you're right, you know the the
- 20:59Speaker 1: Chicago an amazing city. You know, it's a very summer
- 21:03Speaker 1: is a very violent city. A lot of people aren't
- 21:05Speaker 1: aware of that. I don't know what happens to black
- 21:07Speaker 1: people up there, but on the major holidays, they're sitting
- 21:10Speaker 1: there want to shoot each other. And that's sad and
- 21:13Speaker 1: and and and and it's captured in this in this
- 21:15Speaker 1: series because there's a lot of hope, but there's a
- 21:18Speaker 1: lot of tragedy. Talk about the season one, season two,
- 21:21Speaker 1: season three, has your has your how your character has
- 21:23Speaker 1: developed each season in it? I call you in it,
- 21:26Speaker 1: but I know you're Jacob. Yeah, I think, um, I
- 21:30Speaker 1: think we're definitely seeing him grow in areas um and
- 21:34Speaker 1: then definitely see where his weaknesses continue to be. You know,
- 21:39Speaker 1: what is this week? What is this week? If Jacob?
- 21:41Speaker 1: What is this week? Women? Women? The FORGA teller told
- 21:44Speaker 1: you what your weakness was. The voice when I when
- 21:55Speaker 1: I first when we had the table read out, said
- 21:57Speaker 1: oh my god, I can't believe the ladies said that
- 22:03Speaker 1: right in front the tiff place. Your girlfriend and was
- 22:06Speaker 1: the mother of your child? What are your children? I knew.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I knew once we shot that it was gonna go crazy.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I was like, oh my goodness, it seems about to go. Wow. Um,
- 22:18Speaker 1: what's so dumb about the shots that I'm able to
- 22:20Speaker 1: dive into keep diving into a character every year, like
- 22:23Speaker 1: you know, with Slider, like other films I've done, I
- 22:26Speaker 1: only had one opportunity, you know, but with Shot, with
- 22:30Speaker 1: the shots, just keep every year I find new ways
- 22:33Speaker 1: to be Immit, you know, and bring out you know
- 22:36Speaker 1: his personality is swag and and dig deeper into you
- 22:40Speaker 1: know who Emmitt was, you know who he is now.
- 22:42Speaker 1: So it's just, um, it's really fun. It's really fun.
- 22:46Speaker 1: It's a lot of funks. It's a lot of fun, Jacob,
- 22:48Speaker 1: because you know, like, you have this is acting, man,
- 22:51Speaker 1: this is a gift that you have she you have this.
- 22:54Speaker 1: It's like it's like a kid getting coach sticking a
- 22:57Speaker 1: hand in the cookie jaw. Look that you have, you know, like,
- 23:01Speaker 1: what's wrong, what's wrong, what's the problem, what's the problem,
- 23:06Speaker 1: that's what your problem looked at. You have mastered it
- 23:10Speaker 1: is what makes your character work for me, because you
- 23:12Speaker 1: keep getting into trouble after trouble after trouble, and it's
- 23:16Speaker 1: all like it's always like with your hands out, what's wrong,
- 23:18Speaker 1: what's the problem, what's wrong? Right? Right? Exactly. Yeah, It's
- 23:24Speaker 1: just it's so fun to play, to play him. I
- 23:27Speaker 1: feel like it wasn't until I played the show where
- 23:30Speaker 1: I feel like I unpacked it. Uh people on a
- 23:34Speaker 1: different level. I think, I think I've I've played some
- 23:36Speaker 1: really incredible roads. But the show has really made a
- 23:41Speaker 1: stamp on the culture. Like when I walked down the street,
- 23:43Speaker 1: people don't even call me Jacob. They called me Immage,
- 23:46Speaker 1: called me. Yeah, I was there. I was in Cleveland
- 23:51Speaker 1: not too long ago, I said, getting some education on
- 23:54Speaker 1: some stuff. And then like I would stop at the
- 23:56Speaker 1: gas station or stop at the restaurant, and they'd be
- 23:59Speaker 1: like yo, yo, you know, like it's just when you
- 24:04Speaker 1: when you know, when you know Jacob. Let's be real
- 24:07Speaker 1: now you know that in the character is a highly
- 24:11Speaker 1: sex charge character. So I'm sure people look at you
- 24:14Speaker 1: from a ladies percilating from a different angle now. No,
- 24:18Speaker 1: it's definitely been different. I think I even think a
- 24:20Speaker 1: lot of people just now realizing that is Jacob, which
- 24:25Speaker 1: is who is me? I'm just like, and I just
- 24:27Speaker 1: realized Jacob. I'm seeing a lot of these twos now.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I'm just realizing Jacob Lottimore is playing in it on
- 24:31Speaker 1: the show. I've been watching this show for two seasons.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I didn't know that was Jacob, and I was just like,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I'm like, I must be really in it then, because well,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know the things about here stuff, it's the interesting
- 24:40Speaker 1: about our relationship, you know, like what I've been don't
- 24:43Speaker 1: my make convintation a couple of years and when the
- 24:45Speaker 1: show came on the Shy, you know, they was just
- 24:47Speaker 1: there was totally you know, let's get Jacob on your show.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Just get him on your shows. You can interview him.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And I'm glad I waited or we just couldn't connect,
- 24:54Speaker 1: because talking about your character now is a really great opportunity.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Because the beginning of the first of all this season,
- 25:02Speaker 1: they brought on some great additional cast members. My boy
- 25:05Speaker 1: Luke James, Oh my god, what he's doing in that
- 25:07Speaker 1: character Candy Burrows. Wow, she's nailing it, nailing and then
- 25:13Speaker 1: Little Real you know, playing the character Zeke subringing comedy.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But you know how he does it. He can play
- 25:20Speaker 1: serious but actually so funny that it comes across like
- 25:23Speaker 1: a joke every time he opens is doing and so
- 25:26Speaker 1: And that's that's what you're saying. When you when you
- 25:29Speaker 1: got the chance to play against Will Smith, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Angela Bassett, you bring on all these additional talent. It
- 25:34Speaker 1: causes you as a talent to step up your game
- 25:37Speaker 1: as well. Correct, Yeah, absolutely, yeah, I think you know,
- 25:40Speaker 1: Sabedia having a great cash you know, we are can
- 25:43Speaker 1: help out each other and uh motivate each other to
- 25:46Speaker 1: do to do better and it makes a great show.
- 25:49Speaker 1: And you know, as long as the chemistry is amazing, um,
- 25:52Speaker 1: we can always we can always make a scene work,
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know. So it's it's been it's been a blessing
- 25:57Speaker 1: because let's at the stage way yet with the character
- 26:00Speaker 1: brought in Lala Anthony. She's your supposed to the business partner,
- 26:04Speaker 1: but we found out last night you're a little bit
- 26:06Speaker 1: more than your business partner, sir. And then you have Tiff.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You are living at the home with your mom on
- 26:11Speaker 1: the sofa. You know, Tiff sALS. She kind of hasn't
- 26:15Speaker 1: got a license yet, but she kind of sells weed.
- 26:17Speaker 1: That's the way she brings money into the household. And
- 26:21Speaker 1: so did you have these other characters that are out there? Keysha?
- 26:24Speaker 1: She was, she was being held captive by this crazy
- 26:28Speaker 1: guy in the basement of his home. You have Runnie
- 26:30Speaker 1: out there trying to redeem himselves. But the season opened
- 26:34Speaker 1: this year which you are in tears, which I thought
- 26:37Speaker 1: wasn't a amazing moment when I see an actor able
- 26:40Speaker 1: to deliver an emotional like that, tell us how you
- 26:44Speaker 1: you know? Because you will? That was the That was
- 26:46Speaker 1: the that was the funeral moment of the open scene
- 26:49Speaker 1: of the season. How did you get the emotionally to
- 26:52Speaker 1: deliver that type of moment in the opening the premier
- 26:55Speaker 1: season of the third season premiere episode of the third season. UM, honestly,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I'm a crier anyway, you know if I feel like
- 27:04Speaker 1: because I'm a crying too, I'm a cry. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 1: like I cry. I'm like, yeah, it's time to cry.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I'll be back, you know. Um, I think for me,
- 27:13Speaker 1: I have just lost a cousin earlier. That year and
- 27:17Speaker 1: so I was it wasn't too long ago that I was,
- 27:20Speaker 1: you know, at the funeral, and uh it just kind
- 27:23Speaker 1: of hit home, you know, for for me and my
- 27:25Speaker 1: personal life. Um, and just I think the energy of
- 27:29Speaker 1: a funeral or the energy of the casket, Uh, it's
- 27:33Speaker 1: just it's strong, you know, without just being there, which
- 27:36Speaker 1: alone was just Uh, I've never been a pall better
- 27:39Speaker 1: before carrying the casket to the to the to the
- 27:43Speaker 1: car before. I just I've never I've never been in
- 27:46Speaker 1: that position, so uh to feel that weight of the
- 27:49Speaker 1: the casket, to be that close was just it just
- 27:53Speaker 1: felt awesome real, to be honest, and uh, I just
- 27:56Speaker 1: let it flow. I let it flow. And I think,
- 27:58Speaker 1: you know, the directors like, let's just let's film, let's
- 28:01Speaker 1: get it and get it there there in it so
- 28:05Speaker 1: and everybody had tears. You know, a lot of changes
- 28:08Speaker 1: were made. I think that was just that was kind
- 28:10Speaker 1: of sad too, to be honest. I was just like, man,
- 28:12Speaker 1: you know, um, it's just so much, so much change,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and uh it just felt so real. But it felt
- 28:18Speaker 1: like we were all growing to at the same time.
- 28:20Speaker 1: So um, that's how I tapped in that it played
- 28:25Speaker 1: a major role for me as far as this whole
- 28:28Speaker 1: series when I you know the name of the show
- 28:30Speaker 1: with money making conversations, and I always bring people on
- 28:33Speaker 1: to talk about how they run their business or how
- 28:36Speaker 1: they plan their business. And when I look at your
- 28:39Speaker 1: character in it, you know catering. You you did the
- 28:43Speaker 1: opening catering and yeah, you know, you got everybody to
- 28:46Speaker 1: bring from different stores and they wind up ordering pizza
- 28:50Speaker 1: at the wedding, and so you make as a young
- 28:54Speaker 1: startup business. If I had to use you as an
- 28:56Speaker 1: example on my show, you make all the stakes. Your character,
- 29:01Speaker 1: em it makes all the mistakes. Is he ever gonna
- 29:03Speaker 1: get it right? Or that's revealing too much of the
- 29:06Speaker 1: upcoming episodes. You know what I always learned just in
- 29:10Speaker 1: business WR rate of failing WR radar failure because in
- 29:16Speaker 1: the end, you're gonna know, You're donna know all the
- 29:18Speaker 1: mistakes you made, You're gonna be successful. So I think that,
- 29:21Speaker 1: like im it is really human right now, I feel
- 29:24Speaker 1: like he's like business wise, I feel like he's I
- 29:28Speaker 1: feel like that's the only area he's really grown in
- 29:30Speaker 1: to be honest, Like absolutely, That's what I'm excited about it, Jacob,
- 29:33Speaker 1: that character because I'm rooting for it. But then when
- 29:36Speaker 1: you had the moment with Dom that just like come on,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I please, right, But I think like for that that
- 29:43Speaker 1: it's like that's a separate thing, right. I feel like
- 29:46Speaker 1: maybe he hasn't really developed into maybe you know, want
- 29:50Speaker 1: a man, responsible man, Yeah, responsible man in a relationship.
- 29:54Speaker 1: But I feel like when it comes to when it
- 29:56Speaker 1: comes to business, I feel like he's wrapping his head
- 29:58Speaker 1: around how business goes, how how to market, how to
- 30:01Speaker 1: brand something, how to put pieces together, how to be
- 30:04Speaker 1: a leader. Um, you know, if he doesn't know how
- 30:07Speaker 1: to cook, okay, I'm gonna find a chef and I'm
- 30:09Speaker 1: gonna run a cash register, I'm gonna you know, uh,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you know, oversee things. So I think he's growing in
- 30:15Speaker 1: that area. But obviously women is just I think it's
- 30:18Speaker 1: good always going to be a child, a weakness for
- 30:20Speaker 1: this young brother that I was hit in the chest
- 30:23Speaker 1: and say, come on, Emmett, step up, step your game up,
- 30:27Speaker 1: get it right now. Earlier in that conversation, you said
- 30:30Speaker 1: that it was really important that this particular show about
- 30:33Speaker 1: Chicago got it right because the shows, hey, you know,
- 30:38Speaker 1: black people complained that wasn't us. You know, it's a
- 30:40Speaker 1: poor portrayal. What do you feel the shot which is
- 30:44Speaker 1: on Showtime every Sunday night at nine p m. Eastern,
- 30:48Speaker 1: What are you guys doing right on that show, Jacob?
- 30:51Speaker 1: That makes me excited, I can tell you. But again,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I'm a fan, as an as an actor, as a
- 30:56Speaker 1: guy who's in the streets. People are responding to your
- 30:59Speaker 1: care after So well, what are you guys doing right
- 31:01Speaker 1: about the characterization of Chicago? And this I think just
- 31:06Speaker 1: touching on real issues, uh, you know, missing young women, um,
- 31:12Speaker 1: gang activity. Um. I think that you know, we're also
- 31:16Speaker 1: just touching on just real human beings, are real relatable
- 31:19Speaker 1: situations that not only just maybe go on in Chicago, um,
- 31:24Speaker 1: but like maybe that go on the other hoods of
- 31:27Speaker 1: the country, you know what I mean. So I think
- 31:28Speaker 1: that it's finding a way to relate to Chicago, but
- 31:32Speaker 1: it's also finally relate to relate to them the whole world,
- 31:35Speaker 1: you know. And uh, it's just the language is right.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I think the lineage is so tapped into you know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: the media and what's really going on in the streets. So, um,
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know that, and that's good to happen. A lot
- 31:47Speaker 1: of the writers are from Chicago. That's awesome. Well, I'm
- 31:50Speaker 1: telling I want to take care. I want to thank
- 31:51Speaker 1: you for taking the time to come on Money Making Conversation.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Let me tell you something, Jacob, I'm a fan and
- 31:55Speaker 1: any product, when you're sawing, when you drop your song,
- 31:57Speaker 1: or you're doing anything out there other than the shot,
- 32:00Speaker 1: please come on the show. I will promote it. I
- 32:02Speaker 1: got a nice social media following over a million newsletter
- 32:05Speaker 1: over ninety thousand fan club members. I do want to
- 32:08Speaker 1: bring on the show. Introduce you to my fans and
- 32:11Speaker 1: let them know how real you are. And keep winning,
- 32:14Speaker 1: my man, keep winning. Thank you. I appreciate you here.
