- 0:00Luke chapter 2. Now in those days a decree went
- 0:04out from Caesar Augustus that a census be taken of all the
- 0:07inhabited earth. This was the first census taken
- 0:09while Corinius was governor of Syria and everyone was on his
- 0:13way to register for the census, each to his own city.
- 0:17Joseph also went up from Galilee from the city of Nazareth to
- 0:20Judea to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,
- 0:23because he was of the house and family of David, in order to
- 0:26register along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was with
- 0:30child. While they were there, the days
- 0:32were completed for her to give birth, and she gave birth to her
- 0:35first born son. And she wrapped him in clothes
- 0:38and laid him in a Manger, because there was no room for
- 0:40them in the inn. In the same region there were
- 0:43some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch
- 0:45over their flock by night. And an Angel of the Lord
- 0:48suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone
- 0:51around them, and they were terribly frightened.
- 0:54But the Angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold, I
- 0:58bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all the
- 1:01people. For to day in the city of David
- 1:03there has been born for you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
- 1:07This will be a sign for you. You will find a baby wrapped in
- 1:10clothes and lying in a Manger. And suddenly there appeared with
- 1:14the Angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and
- 1:17saying, Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace
- 1:21among men with whom he is pleased.
- 1:24When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the
- 1:26shepherds began saying to one another, Let us go straight to
- 1:29Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which
- 1:32the Lord has made known to us. So they came in a hurry, and
- 1:35found their way to Mary and Joseph and the baby as he lay in
- 1:38the Manger. When they had seen this, they
- 1:40made known the statement which had been told them about this
- 1:42child, and all who heard it wondered at the things which
- 1:45were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these
- 1:48things, pondering them in her heart.
- 1:51The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for
- 1:53all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them
- 1:57when 8 days had passed before his circumcision.
- 2:00His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the Angel
- 2:03before he was conceived in the womb.
- 2:04And when the days for their purification according to the
- 2:08Law of Moses were completed, they brought him up to Jerusalem
- 2:11to present him to the Lord. As it is written in the law of
- 2:14the Lord, every first born male that opens the womb shall be
- 2:18called holy to the Lord, and to offer a sacrifice according to
- 2:21what was said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtle doves, or
- 2:24two young pigeons. And there was a man in Jerusalem
- 2:27whose name was Simeon. And this man was righteous and
- 2:30devout, looking for the consolation of Israel.
- 2:33And the Holy Spirit was upon him.
- 2:35And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would
- 2:38not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
- 2:41And he came in the Spirit into the temple.
- 2:43And when the parents brought in the child Jesus to carry out for
- 2:47him the custom of the law, then he took him into his arms and
- 2:49blessed God, and said, Now, Lord, you are releasing your
- 2:53bond servant, to depart in peace according to your word.
- 2:57For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have
- 3:00prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light of revelation
- 3:03to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people.
- 3:06Israel. And his father and mother were
- 3:08amazed at the things which were being said about him.
- 3:11And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold,
- 3:15this child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel,
- 3:18and for a sign to be opposed. And a sword will Pierce even
- 3:22your own soul to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be
- 3:25revealed. And there was a prophetess,
- 3:28Anna, the daughter of Faneuil of the tribe of Asher.
- 3:31She would have she was advanced in years and had lived with her
- 3:34husband seven years after her marriage, and then as a widow to
- 3:37the age of 84. She never left the temple,
- 3:40serving day and night with fastings and prayers.
- 3:43At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God
- 3:47and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for
- 3:50the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had performed
- 3:53everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned to
- 3:56Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth.
- 3:58The child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in
- 4:02wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
- 4:05Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the
- 4:07feast of the Passover. When he became 12, they went up
- 4:11there according to the custom of the feast, and as they were
- 4:14returning after spending the full number of days, the boy
- 4:17Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
- 4:20But his parents were unaware of it, but supposed him to be in
- 4:23the caravan and went a day's journey.
- 4:26And they began looking for Him among their relatives and
- 4:28acquaintances. When they did not find him, they
- 4:30returned to Jerusalem looking for Him.
- 4:32Then after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in
- 4:36the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking
- 4:39them questions. And all who heard him were
- 4:41amazed at his understanding and his answers.
- 4:44When they saw him, they were astonished.
- 4:46His mother said to him, Son, why have you treated us this way?
- 4:50Behold, your father and I have been anxiously looking for you.
- 4:53And he said to them, Why is it that you were looking for me?
- 4:56Did you not know that I had to be in my father's house?
- 4:59But they did not understand the statement which he had made to
- 5:02them. And he went down with them, and
- 5:04came to Nazareth. And he continued in subjection
- 5:06to them. And his mother treasured all
- 5:09these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in
- 5:12wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men.
