- 2:53Speaker 1: is what I want to do. This is a small
- 2:55Speaker 1: portion of what he then did. Okay, because he don't
- 2:58Speaker 1: television right now. You don't television now? Yeah, for the
- 3:02Speaker 1: people right now comes on this new shown to the

- 3:23Speaker 1: You know, you know, you know you're powerful. You you're
- 3:26Speaker 1: one show gone. They put a note one of your
- 3:28Speaker 1: same shows in the same It's like, that's my slot,
- 3:32Speaker 1: that's my slot, that's my It's it's miss Ram. We know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: we know what you got, what you got. So when
- 3:39Speaker 1: I talked about thirty or seven years man a career
- 3:42Speaker 1: success and and talking about I, we'll first of all
- 3:46Speaker 1: to talking about dared Devil, you know, which, for some reason,
- 3:49Speaker 1: you know, contract with a Netflix Societey Disney. Y'all start
- 3:52Speaker 1: on your own streaming service. We're not gonna renew Daredevil.
- 3:56Speaker 1: But in the early seasons, you were playing a reporter,
- 4:00Speaker 1: tenacious reporter, wouldn't give up reporter, and I went, he
- 4:04Speaker 1: ain't last. He brothers got to go. You know, you
- 4:10Speaker 1: know your character, your brother brother go die? Who goes?
- 4:14Speaker 1: When you said, scre I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I don't know when they're gonna kill me, but I'm
- 4:18Speaker 1: gonna die. I'm gonna die. You just and there then, man,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you just would not you up. Yeah. When I signed
- 4:27Speaker 1: when I signed on, you know it was already Netflix
- 4:31Speaker 1: had already bought it for five like five seasons more
- 4:34Speaker 1: or five seasons, and they said, okay, you know we
- 4:37Speaker 1: want you for the first season and you're gonna die.
- 4:39Speaker 1: So I knew up front. I wasn't. I knew a
- 4:43Speaker 1: front plan, plan, you know, plan accordingly, brother, job right
- 4:49Speaker 1: right right, take this job and start shopping. Everybody know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know Netflix, I'm working the hard working Okay, just
- 4:58Speaker 1: let y'all know, and obey, boy, after this death scene,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I'm available. I'm available and after so hit me up.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And when I look when I look at the resume,
- 5:09Speaker 1: man and and all these different roles. You know, there's
- 5:14Speaker 1: some comedy throwing in there, there's drama, there's uh as,
- 5:17Speaker 1: there's films. How do you prepare? I was talking to
- 5:21Speaker 1: a good friend, like yesterday I saw me. I say,
- 5:23Speaker 1: Clifton Pile and you know, you know kept the pile
- 5:26Speaker 1: and you know he's another one these guys. Just you know,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you squitch your eyes and you go. Because we was
- 5:32Speaker 1: on this we was I was doing a commercial shoot
- 5:34Speaker 1: and then he came up, was talking and then somebody said,
- 5:37Speaker 1: that guy looks Familion. Just keep staring at him, Just
- 5:42Speaker 1: keep staring. You're gonna figure out. I mean, it's safe
- 5:45Speaker 1: thing with you. I'm should you get that? A lot
- 5:47Speaker 1: people go he looks for a million I know you
- 5:54Speaker 1: will will wet you together. You don't want that. You
- 5:59Speaker 1: don't want that. We know here we here if we
- 6:02Speaker 1: go to high school together, right, I just got just
- 6:05Speaker 1: got one away. We were in the meetings together, right,
- 6:08Speaker 1: just I just got down like two days ago. It's
- 6:11Speaker 1: always so, you know. I mean, it's all good though, bro,
- 6:15Speaker 1: Just you know they figure out in a minute. I say,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that's really good because because you have not been pigeonholed
- 6:22Speaker 1: for a certain character. You know that you you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you play a gangstore, you play a mean how, you
- 6:27Speaker 1: play an abusive father, you play a drug dealer. You've
- 6:31Speaker 1: done it all, my man. Yeah, what do you mentally
- 6:34Speaker 1: prepare for that? Well? I mean I think with with
- 6:39Speaker 1: each with each role, I really try to find the
- 6:47Speaker 1: the core of each one of those characters. I never
- 6:50Speaker 1: I never approached a bad guy or a good guy
- 6:52Speaker 1: or a hero from the perspective of having judgment about them,
- 6:58Speaker 1: because you know, yeah, uh, the person who is is
- 7:04Speaker 1: the bad guy. From their perspective, it is not bad.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It's not a bad guy. You know, they're just everything
- 7:10Speaker 1: they do is they feels justified, you know, by some
- 7:14Speaker 1: code or by you know, by their own belief system.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And so I tried, I try to find that belief
- 7:22Speaker 1: system for that character and and bring it without judgment um,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you know. So that's that's that's the basically I prepared,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know. And then there's the you know, the nuancewers
- 7:36Speaker 1: what you know, what is the character sounded like? What
- 7:39Speaker 1: is the body language or what is you know and
- 7:42Speaker 1: other things like that, and you know, the thing that
- 7:44Speaker 1: I want to bring out to everybody when I like
- 7:46Speaker 1: even in that character and the recent series I saw
- 7:49Speaker 1: him in Netflix, Darren Devil, one of the more popular
- 7:53Speaker 1: series on Netflix out of the Marvel family. I knew
- 7:56Speaker 1: your character, you know, it was I was engaged your character.
- 8:00Speaker 1: We just to shut up, you know, because I just
- 8:03Speaker 1: knew you just you just would not stop reporting. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: even when you know you know this serious and air,
- 8:10Speaker 1: did you go back and look at it? And you can,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you can, But I just knew that you emotionally engage
- 8:16Speaker 1: me first of all with your passion that That's what
- 8:18Speaker 1: I'm saying, is that you take a character is on script.
- 8:21Speaker 1: We know this's not real, but you engage me and
- 8:24Speaker 1: my wife is a big fan of of your talents too.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And and also we watched Daredevil together, a big fan
- 8:30Speaker 1: of that, showing other works that you've done over the years.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And when we when we watched this and we saw you,
- 8:35Speaker 1: we was excited because guess what you deserve to be
- 8:38Speaker 1: on screen. You deserve to keep working because we know
- 8:40Speaker 1: you're gonna give us something unique and you're gonna cause
- 8:43Speaker 1: us to be engaged. So when you died, I was like, wow, wow, man,
- 8:48Speaker 1: he wouldn't share, he wouldn't stop, right, But you get
- 8:56Speaker 1: that right, you get that right. That's why you work, right,
- 8:58Speaker 1: that's where you work. That's beautiful. You know, that's what
- 9:03Speaker 1: you want as an actress of somebody to care about you.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You care about that character. You know, be engaged, being involved,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know with that with with with with that character,
- 9:14Speaker 1: have empathy and have you know, compassion, have whatever it
- 9:16Speaker 1: is towards that that character, so that when you when
- 9:20Speaker 1: they're when there's a loss, you know you're rooting for them,
- 9:23Speaker 1: you and they're loss. You know, it's like, man, you
- 9:26Speaker 1: killed the brother on the phone? Well? Interesting was that
- 9:29Speaker 1: was such an iconic character in the Marvel universe, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: it's great to be able a person of color, to
- 9:35Speaker 1: be able to be able to spin eurok who so
- 9:38Speaker 1: iconic in the universe, you know, as the you know,
- 9:42Speaker 1: the only thing I kept with the glasses. Absolutely, absolutely,
- 9:45Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying is that I love it. We're
- 9:47Speaker 1: on the phone with Vondi Curtis hall. Uh. It's a
- 9:49Speaker 1: new series from Schondel Sanderland Productions is called for the
- 9:54Speaker 1: People every Thursday night on ABC. We will be back
- 9:57Speaker 1: with more. Okay, just Rashan McDonald. You're listening to money
- 10:02Speaker 1: making conversations and he talked to us earlier about we've
- 10:06Speaker 1: been laughing back and forth by darn Darryl, how he
- 10:09Speaker 1: can create characters that engage you, to make you, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: throw stuff at the TV Skoreen be mad, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and and that that's taking something that's on a piece
- 10:19Speaker 1: of paper and then bringing emotion and bringing substance to
- 10:23Speaker 1: that character that it has a degree of believability. And
- 10:26Speaker 1: so he's doing that right now on The new show
- 10:28Speaker 1: for the People is on ABC on Thursday nights uh
- 10:33Speaker 1: at ten pm, ninth Central. It's called for the People.
- 10:35Speaker 1: He plays a judge. Now, how do you play a judge? Sir?
- 10:42Speaker 1: There's a lot of quire time. There's a lot of
- 10:43Speaker 1: quire time playing the judge. Now, yeah, you know, the
- 10:48Speaker 1: fortunate thing about about this show is, you know, you
- 10:51Speaker 1: see me on the bench, you see me in the court,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and you know, in my chambers, I get out into
- 10:57Speaker 1: the world. There was a big uh episode where I
- 11:03Speaker 1: go to the home of a young brother who lived
- 11:07Speaker 1: in the projects, who I sentenced and he ultimately end
- 11:12Speaker 1: up dying in prison because I had to sentence him
- 11:15Speaker 1: based because of these mandatory guidelines, federal guidelines. And I
- 11:22Speaker 1: do a big speech about you know, the the unjust
- 11:29Speaker 1: uh application of those laws, you know, especially how it's
- 11:34Speaker 1: disproportionate for you know, persons of color. Um. And so
- 11:38Speaker 1: you see me on the bench and you see me
- 11:40Speaker 1: out in the world. Uh. So I get, I get
- 11:44Speaker 1: a little I get I get to get off the bench.
- 11:46Speaker 1: And that's what I like because about the road right
- 11:51Speaker 1: right right, right right, you know, because what happens is
- 11:54Speaker 1: that when you know, when they when they promote these
- 11:56Speaker 1: shows and they go why were they were judged? At
- 11:59Speaker 1: first of all, going okay, my first thought, this is
- 12:02Speaker 1: gonna waste this talent is sitting up there. But you
- 12:04Speaker 1: know that when I read that then the then I
- 12:06Speaker 1: saw that went okay, okay, they're allowing his character explain
- 12:09Speaker 1: because I think there there is something about an African
- 12:12Speaker 1: American man being in the position looking at young men,
- 12:18Speaker 1: young men and knowing that a decision that you make
- 12:22Speaker 1: can alter their lives forever. And I think that's really
- 12:25Speaker 1: deep and and I'm to sure you take that in
- 12:28Speaker 1: consideration when you're reading the script, that this happening every day,
- 12:32Speaker 1: This happens every absolutely, absolutely absolutely, and you know, one
- 12:38Speaker 1: thing is federal guideline, but then you have discretion, and
- 12:41Speaker 1: you have discretion, and and you know, looking at again
- 12:46Speaker 1: the disproportionate sentences for persons of color, you know, you
- 12:53Speaker 1: really question our judicial system. It is not We're not
- 12:59Speaker 1: dealing on an equal playing field. Uh. And so you
- 13:04Speaker 1: know where our court, the Southern District of New York,
- 13:09Speaker 1: of course is is the oldest oldest court in America. Uh.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But but it's in the headlines now because of the
- 13:19Speaker 1: Coin case, because of you know, investigations of Trump and
- 13:22Speaker 1: what have you. But these big cases of tried in
- 13:26Speaker 1: the in the third in the Southern District of New
- 13:29Speaker 1: York is now called the Third Good Marshall Courthouse. Marshall
- 13:35Speaker 1: was a judge there before going to the Supreme Court
- 13:40Speaker 1: and and what have you. And so, um, there's a
- 13:44Speaker 1: lot of history there. There's a Pentagon Papers Rosenberg trial.
- 13:54Speaker 1: You know, Tom Brady deflate Gate. You know, you know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: you get deep and it gets just kind of you know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: it was bal but we do. We do a lot
- 14:06Speaker 1: of things. And so I'm the chief judge at that
- 14:10Speaker 1: of the court. And um, I had the opportunity to
- 14:14Speaker 1: go and sit with the judge and there now uh
- 14:20Speaker 1: and do research and they're good marshals h law book,
- 14:29Speaker 1: the dictionary was in uh, Judge Wang's um um um
- 14:38Speaker 1: chambers that he left for him. Uh. And and this
- 14:44Speaker 1: particularly judge was nominated by Clinton and then re nominated
- 14:50Speaker 1: to another court, the Apellic Court, by by Barack Obama.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And so my character was it was nomin needed by
- 15:00Speaker 1: George by m by Clinton. Um. And so uh, you know,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I love playing this this role because you know, he
- 15:13Speaker 1: reflects a lot of my own personal beliefs, sensibility. It's
- 15:21Speaker 1: interesting that you say that, because when you say Clinton, Uh,
- 15:24Speaker 1: that's how deep the characters. You know, everybody thinks you
- 15:27Speaker 1: just give a character a name or you just give
- 15:30Speaker 1: these characters. They call bibles, they create bibles, and they
- 15:33Speaker 1: give a history. So it gives an actor a point
- 15:35Speaker 1: of view, and it gives him and also enables them
- 15:38Speaker 1: to be able to have a sense of death when
- 15:41Speaker 1: you say the word Clinton. Now, Clinton, everybody knows historically
- 15:44Speaker 1: passed laws that has led to the massive incarceration of
- 15:48Speaker 1: African American men in this country. And so that's part
- 15:52Speaker 1: of his bible, That's part of stuff that he knows.
- 15:55Speaker 1: That's why he's talking. That's why he saw articulate about
- 15:57Speaker 1: the actual location where he's at and says, this is
- 16:00Speaker 1: talking to young actors and young people who who look
- 16:03Speaker 1: at stories to know that when you see a guy
- 16:06Speaker 1: like Mr Hall talking to you about his career, how
- 16:10Speaker 1: he's consistent with the role, he has to do homework.
- 16:13Speaker 1: He has to know when he's sitting up there that
- 16:16Speaker 1: if he's been if he's been appointed during the Clinton administration,
- 16:21Speaker 1: he has seen a lot that he is not liked
- 16:24Speaker 1: over the years. And so when you make that big
- 16:26Speaker 1: speech moment, it's kind of like an eruption. Finally, I
- 16:31Speaker 1: just gotta see what I gotta say, And that's really
- 16:34Speaker 1: powerful for your character development. Correct absolutely absolutely, because you
- 16:40Speaker 1: sit there and you say, I've I've sat here and
- 16:42Speaker 1: watched hundreds, if not thousands of young men and women
- 16:48Speaker 1: come before me and and seeing their lives be shattered,
- 16:58Speaker 1: families broke enough, you know, Uh, because of some laws
- 17:05Speaker 1: that are just that I cannot change. I'm merely the
- 17:10Speaker 1: person who has to facilitator. That's all facilitatos. You just go, okay,
- 17:17Speaker 1: he got to strike you out, you know, and so UM,
- 17:25Speaker 1: those are the things that we look at, and it's
- 17:27Speaker 1: important that that bring about awareness so that we can
- 17:34Speaker 1: reach out to our representatives and have been change these
- 17:39Speaker 1: unjust laws so that we can move forward, so that
- 17:45Speaker 1: we can try on somehow to level this incredibly disproportionate
- 17:51Speaker 1: plane on the phone is a Bundye Curtis Hall. He's
- 17:55Speaker 1: starring and a judge on the new Show for the People. Uh,
- 18:00Speaker 1: Nicholas h It's a Shonda Land Ryan Shonda Land production. Uh.
- 18:04Speaker 1: The show as Aaron on ABC UM every Thursday timpm
- 18:09Speaker 1: Eastern and West Coast tim pm and nine pm Central.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Before you go, I wanted to talk about this. A
- 18:15Speaker 1: film that you're appearing in this coming up I think
- 18:17Speaker 1: it may. It's called Harriet the bio pick on frame
- 18:20Speaker 1: abolitionists Harriet Tubman story and uh, how was that that? That?
- 18:25Speaker 1: How did you get into that movie? And uh, what
- 18:27Speaker 1: would you? What was your projection? So you go from
- 18:29Speaker 1: a judge now and you know night, Now you're running
- 18:33Speaker 1: for your life. You know, I love this guy, he
- 18:39Speaker 1: just don't know. Man. The first time I really met him,
- 18:42Speaker 1: we sat down, well, I think he's byou. That's when
- 18:45Speaker 1: he really really came to mind. That it was now
- 18:49Speaker 1: to see that whole years and because uh, because I
- 18:53Speaker 1: met you probably like a ninety three something like that
- 18:56Speaker 1: and over we've been periodical of different shows and every
- 18:59Speaker 1: time I see you. That's why I love my show.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I get to really talk from a different perspective with
- 19:03Speaker 1: individuals like you who I've admired, but also allow you
- 19:07Speaker 1: to tell your story. So give us a little bit
- 19:08Speaker 1: about Harriet before we get out of here, because I
- 19:10Speaker 1: definitely want people know this show is coming out, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: also you're playing a major actor role in it. Yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 1: Harriet is the story of Harriet, Harriet Tubman, and it
- 19:19Speaker 1: is not a traditional biopick in that sense. It's really
- 19:24Speaker 1: Harriet as a superhero. Really, I mean, it's really a
- 19:27Speaker 1: story about freedom and I and in this movie, Uh,
- 19:32Speaker 1: it's gonna be released. Uh it may not come out.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I may not. I think it's gonna come out, Uh
- 19:38Speaker 1: come out probably in stept October. It's going to come
- 19:42Speaker 1: out of the Fall for for I'm gonna bring you Bagby.
- 19:44Speaker 1: I'm bringing you back. Okay, I'm bringing you back. An
- 19:47Speaker 1: we'll talk again, Okay. Yeah. And so I'm playing I
- 19:52Speaker 1: played Reverend uh Samuel Green, who was a big person
- 19:57Speaker 1: in the Underground Railroad I housed and facility hated Harriet
- 20:01Speaker 1: to to run and then I would uh hide people
- 20:06Speaker 1: in my church. And he's an historic character who ultimately
- 20:10Speaker 1: ended up being arrested. They couldn't catch him, um for
