- 1:24Speaker 1: My next test is on the phone, Houston, Texas. I'm
- 1:27Speaker 1: boring and raised music in Texas. He actually from Alabama,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Mary and Alabama. Seb read his book just say, you
- 1:33Speaker 1: know those things when you read somebody book where they're
- 1:35Speaker 1: really from, you know, graduate of Fish University. Know those
- 1:38Speaker 1: things when you read their book. I found out by
- 1:41Speaker 1: reading his book that they're singing talents of his daughters
- 1:45Speaker 1: actually came from him. I didn't know that. I didn't
- 1:47Speaker 1: know that. I thought he was just a good looking
- 1:48Speaker 1: guy and my frat brother, my next yest creative manage
- 1:51Speaker 1: and produced a super singing group, Destiny's Child. He possesses
- 1:54Speaker 1: an NBA, a PhD, and Strategic Planning and organizational culture
- 1:59Speaker 1: from Corners on Christian Bible College. Holds a professorship at
- 2:02Speaker 1: Texas Southern University, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate
- 2:06Speaker 1: level courses on the entertainment industry in the School of
- 2:09Speaker 1: Communications and Entrepreneurship in Texas Southern University School of Business.
- 2:13Speaker 1: He is the founder of Music World Entertainment and Those Institute,
- 2:17Speaker 1: which offers entrepreneur entertainment and music business courses. On my
- 2:21Speaker 1: show today, we'll be discussing all of these things and
- 2:24Speaker 1: this new book Racism in the Eyes of a Child. Please,
- 2:27Speaker 1: welcome to moneymaking Conversations. For long time since I've seen this, brother,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Matthew knows. Hey, Matthew Man, Brother, I had to go back.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I'm telling my staff that we know. We first cross
- 2:43Speaker 1: path in eighteen eighty two when I was launching my
- 2:46Speaker 1: career as a comedian in Houston on the hip hop
- 2:49Speaker 1: comedy Stopping At the same time you was launching the
- 2:52Speaker 1: brand of Destiny's Child and he used to perform and
- 2:54Speaker 1: my commedy comes here by Comma. That's how we're at.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's how long we go back? Twenty five years right there,
- 2:59Speaker 1: on street there you go, so you know, so it's
- 3:01Speaker 1: like you know when you see And I thought, that's
- 3:04Speaker 1: why I'm really excited. It's been like too much. We
- 3:06Speaker 1: were able to father get you on the show just
- 3:08Speaker 1: to talk about what you're doing now, man with the
- 3:10Speaker 1: entrepreneurship and entertainment is exactly what I'm doing. And I thought,
- 3:14Speaker 1: we have such a natural marriage, and I don't want
- 3:16Speaker 1: this to be the only time we talk because of
- 3:19Speaker 1: the fact that you were on the same lanes. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: you know, my show is heard on Serious X at
- 3:23Speaker 1: one for the one which is on Howard University campus,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and my show was heard also on channel one for
- 3:29Speaker 1: the two Serious Exam which is on all the HBCU campuses.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And so you are professor at Texas Southern University. So
- 3:35Speaker 1: when you do these classes talking to these young minds,
- 3:37Speaker 1: these bellennial minds, what is your approach to getting giving
- 3:41Speaker 1: them the right tools for success? Before we get into
- 3:43Speaker 1: your book, well, you know, I I teach that a
- 3:45Speaker 1: critical power. I keep from by thirty eight o'clock is
- 3:49Speaker 1: the toughest time you can teach young people, but you know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: we have fun with it. And the first thing I
- 3:55Speaker 1: teach this critical thinking first, so critical thinking and say
- 4:00Speaker 1: and so so when you when you because you have
- 4:02Speaker 1: the point in your life where you have all this
- 4:03Speaker 1: knowledge and that's what I've learned about myself. You know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: I have all this knowledge and I'm sharing it now
- 4:08Speaker 1: with my format money making conversation. And you, Sataly, you're
- 4:12Speaker 1: sharing it an institutional, uh like Texas and University, but
- 4:16Speaker 1: also knows institute what exactly is knows institute well, most
- 4:21Speaker 1: institute is e learning online continuing education. Uh. You know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: people want to learn something and they want to they
- 4:30Speaker 1: want to go online and learn it, and they want
- 4:31Speaker 1: to get it then and there. Uh. And we offer
- 4:35Speaker 1: programs and I would be calling on all of the
- 4:38Speaker 1: ABC dudes. I'm actually getting on the plane today on
- 4:41Speaker 1: my way to Clark University. Uh. We will offer these
- 4:46Speaker 1: e learning courses and also a way for HBC used
- 4:51Speaker 1: to have as a fundraiser as well. People need to
- 4:54Speaker 1: understand what you're trying to do in the entertainment and
- 4:57Speaker 1: entrepreneur world and you're affecting the because you're a professor
- 5:01Speaker 1: at Texas Southern University. You're in the School of Communication
- 5:04Speaker 1: and School of Business, two key areas for that millennial movement.
- 5:09Speaker 1: At the eighteen to thirt or four you're affecting minds.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And then you have the Noose Institute, you're affecting minds.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Let's focus on that if you don't mind and talk
- 5:17Speaker 1: about why did you start the Those Institute. Well, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: it's education and academia has always been a passion of mine.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So the Those Institute is specifically for entrepreneurship, uh, entertainment
- 5:32Speaker 1: and music business and over a thousand courses uh. And
- 5:35Speaker 1: you can just simply go to Those Institute dot com
- 5:40Speaker 1: and you can review all of the courses stuff. And
- 5:43Speaker 1: then for the HBC used this the Matthew Knows Institute, UH,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and that's over thousand courses as well. And again for
- 5:50Speaker 1: e learning online education, well that's where everybody going, you know,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I know the Phoenix University was I think the first
- 5:57Speaker 1: one that jumped out there would and e learning. Then
- 6:00Speaker 1: also you started seeing all these athletes, especially individuals who
- 6:03Speaker 1: didn't have a lot of time, starting to show up
- 6:05Speaker 1: with these these online degrees. So it's not something like
- 6:08Speaker 1: a stigma anymore. Getting online degrees are really like like
- 6:12Speaker 1: the social media world, the digital world is part of
- 6:14Speaker 1: the process now. So so I say that to people
- 6:17Speaker 1: understand oh when they would they have the same married
- 6:20Speaker 1: WOULDY have the same credibility if I went to a
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know, a brick and mortar institution, and yes, it
- 6:25Speaker 1: will correct. But what sign is actually, if you've taken
- 6:28Speaker 1: the online course, you know, it's actually harder than sitting
- 6:32Speaker 1: in the class because you've got to continue focus when
- 6:35Speaker 1: you're taking about yourself. So it's it's a lot harder
- 6:39Speaker 1: actually not easier. Cool. Now, with that being said, we're
- 6:42Speaker 1: gonna get a little bit about your book because I
- 6:45Speaker 1: read it. I read it yesterday. I really did read
- 6:47Speaker 1: this book. And the thing about it that I took
- 6:50Speaker 1: away from it was the fact that you know, I
- 6:52Speaker 1: I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. You're born
- 6:55Speaker 1: and you were born in mary And Alabama and spent
- 6:58Speaker 1: a lot of time in gats in this area of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the country where your your grandparents had three hundred acres
- 7:02Speaker 1: that they don't have today, which I always here these stories.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I just get said that what if stories of life
- 7:08Speaker 1: and so and and and high the shape the Matthew
- 7:11Speaker 1: knows of today. And the thing that came out of
- 7:14Speaker 1: the book that I really commend you for was to
- 7:16Speaker 1: talk about therapy, because therapy is something that African American,
- 7:20Speaker 1: especially men, don't even admit to even consider it. Well,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I wasn'mportant to admit that in your book for for
- 7:27Speaker 1: that reason. You just said, Uh, you know, we often
- 7:30Speaker 1: have a stigma that he's crazy, has no control. Uh.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And when it's just the opposite. The people that that
- 7:38Speaker 1: go to therapy are people are that are just the opposite.
- 7:41Speaker 1: They're smart. Uh, they know that they know that asks
- 7:45Speaker 1: for help. Uh, that's stress, that's not weakness. Right. But
- 7:49Speaker 1: but then again, you know I know that, Uh, I
- 7:52Speaker 1: know that when you when you admit that, that almost
- 7:54Speaker 1: feels like a weakness. You know what I'm saying. I
- 7:56Speaker 1: know that you know that that's us. Black Black the
- 7:58Speaker 1: black community or any minority comunity tend to allow, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: situations to be downplayed, you know, whether it's in this situation.
- 8:07Speaker 1: When you were talked about it, I realized, Wow, this
- 8:10Speaker 1: is this is something I really need to talk about
- 8:11Speaker 1: and bring out because that's courageous to me. That's that's
- 8:14Speaker 1: that's commendable to me. And also its shaped the way
- 8:18Speaker 1: you you approached your life correct, trying to get rid
- 8:22Speaker 1: of these demons, trying to get rid of these emotional
- 8:23Speaker 1: demons that you didn't know what was affecting you, and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you're just living your life thinking you as being normal exactly. Uh.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Started for me having these panic attacks and not knowing
- 8:33Speaker 1: where they were coming from and putting on an e
- 8:36Speaker 1: k G all weekend, and the doctor said, hey, you
- 8:39Speaker 1: have nothing wrong with you physically, it's all mental. Uh.
- 8:42Speaker 1: And that's why I started going to a therapist and
- 8:45Speaker 1: beginning to sign out and understand who I was and
- 8:48Speaker 1: the things in my childhood. I had racial trauma right right,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and that trauma as you as you obvious you're outlined
- 8:56Speaker 1: in the book kind of like a dealt with you
- 8:59Speaker 1: and made you the person you are in your emotional life,
- 9:01Speaker 1: your relationships, and also the person you are currently. Are
- 9:05Speaker 1: you a happier person now because of therapy? Are you?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Are you disappointed because you didn't figure this out earlier?
- 9:11Speaker 1: What is your approach to it now? After? I'm very
- 9:15Speaker 1: very happy. Um, you know, I'm grateful. Uh, remarried, I've
- 9:20Speaker 1: been married, not five years most I don't know if
- 9:23Speaker 1: i've been married. I'm even married, but uh, life is good,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know, twenty fifth year of music. We're all and
- 9:30Speaker 1: my kids, health really really them unknown kids. Okay, cool, Okay,
- 9:35Speaker 1: you got great grandkids? Yeah, I got a thirty year
- 9:42Speaker 1: old my grandson who's a pretty good basketball player. Right,
- 9:48Speaker 1: so lunch boy, Yeah, I remember. I remember when I
- 9:51Speaker 1: was doing a casting for for sister sister and she
- 9:56Speaker 1: couldn't come in because the fact that you know, she
- 9:58Speaker 1: got married and moved in that part of the life.
- 10:00Speaker 1: And I'm really happy with what she's doing in life now.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But what I want to say to you, Matthew, is
- 10:05Speaker 1: that we didn't really get a full story on you.
- 10:07Speaker 1: When you come back on my show. I would love
- 10:10Speaker 1: to come back and as many times as you because
- 10:13Speaker 1: I'm just going to let you know because what you're doing,
- 10:16Speaker 1: because I really want to talk about the Nose Institute
- 10:18Speaker 1: and we get more detail about the book. But I
- 10:20Speaker 1: want to give people an outline of what the book
- 10:22Speaker 1: was because I read it and I was moved by
- 10:25Speaker 1: I've learned so many things about you. Learned you were
- 10:27Speaker 1: a singer, learned that you was an incredible basketball player,
- 10:30Speaker 1: But more important, I learned that you were honest. Man.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You're honest to tell us that you have weaknesses and
- 10:34Speaker 1: you will to share those weaknesses. Do tell us I
- 10:38Speaker 1: went to therapy. If something is wrong with you, fix it,
- 10:40Speaker 1: don't don't, don't deny it, and please come back on
- 10:43Speaker 1: my show, Matthew. Okay, I will just lastly the Matthew
- 10:48Speaker 1: Knows dot Com and you can find out everything about me. Yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 1: we would do that to be played back on podcast
- 10:53Speaker 1: Apple and Our Heart and we get you back next month. Man,
- 10:55Speaker 1: I gotta have your back. Brother tooth breaks, Okay, all right,
