- 0:39Speaker 1: can call a lot of great things and it's all positive.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Please working the show, Brandy Harvey, thank you so much
- 0:44Speaker 1: for having me. It feels surreal. Yeah, it feels a
- 0:49Speaker 1: bit surreal to be here with you. Like absolutely, so
- 0:52Speaker 1: many years, so many years. You've known me since I
- 0:55Speaker 1: was seventeen, Absolutely going to college Hampton Hampton, then Ohio
- 0:59Speaker 1: State pledging Delta needing Black Black Student Union campaign. She's
- 1:06Speaker 1: always this person. I gotta change lives, change lives. Absolutely
- 1:10Speaker 1: now so you're up here, you know, social media just
- 1:13Speaker 1: to a funnish door by her and a twin sisters
- 1:16Speaker 1: in the early State about two thousand and seven. They
- 1:18Speaker 1: was they were struggling socially, now, you know. And and
- 1:23Speaker 1: I told him, I say, look, uh, I'll give you.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I give you five thouars. I think it's like five
- 1:28Speaker 1: thousand if y'all can just get the five thousand followers
- 1:32Speaker 1: five and gave us a book, gave us this yellow
- 1:36Speaker 1: social Media one hundred Ways or something to up your
- 1:40Speaker 1: social media game or something like that. And we failed miserably.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I mean they actually walked away from its, stopped talking
- 1:48Speaker 1: to me. You know, they didn't try it a little bit.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You know, they try, We failed. We failed miserably. It
- 1:53Speaker 1: was not our calling. Then, now, what is your social
- 1:56Speaker 1: media numbers? Now? My friend so on beyond her, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: met over twenty thousand followers from my Active Wellness brand
- 2:03Speaker 1: and then from my personal I am Brandy Harvey on Instagram.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I have over a hundred thirty thousand Instagram followers. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: hundred and thirty eight thousand Instagram followers. Yeah, okay, that's
- 2:19Speaker 1: called brand growth. That is definitely brand growth. Because I
- 2:22Speaker 1: remember when I had one from a person who stopped
- 2:26Speaker 1: talking to me about social media. You know, you put
- 2:29Speaker 1: so much pressure on us in the office. I remember it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It was Carly and I it was it was some
- 2:34Speaker 1: other people for trees. She put a lot of pressure
- 2:36Speaker 1: on us during that time for social Actually it was
- 2:39Speaker 1: it was great because I didn't really believe in I
- 2:44Speaker 1: launched it for your dad and I remember you ran
- 2:46Speaker 1: his social campaign, got it up like this really is
- 2:52Speaker 1: not It's not me. I don't want to do that.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And that's what this book is about. This. The book
- 2:56Speaker 1: is about you can do a lot of things good,
- 2:59Speaker 1: but that doesn't necessarily mean that's a long term that's
- 3:02Speaker 1: gonna make you happy. No, I'm going to fulfill your
- 3:05Speaker 1: dreams and more importantly than it may not be your calling. No,
- 3:09Speaker 1: tell us why you wrote the book, because that was
- 3:10Speaker 1: one of the main takeaways to that guy from the book.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You know why I wrote this book is because I
- 3:16Speaker 1: wanted to You know, I'm a teacher at my heart,
- 3:19Speaker 1: at my core, and I wanted to teach other women
- 3:22Speaker 1: how to break free in their lives, to have their
- 3:25Speaker 1: own breakthrough, to jump over the hurdle of being unstuck
- 3:29Speaker 1: of staying with the victims story that's kept you stuck
- 3:32Speaker 1: for so long. I wanted to help women break free
- 3:35Speaker 1: from the food bondage, you know, because so many of
- 3:38Speaker 1: us are stuck eating and drinking ourselves into like a
- 3:42Speaker 1: coma every single day, trying to suppress the emotions, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: so and then spiritually, I think so many black women
- 3:49Speaker 1: in particular have been you know, UM, really hurt by
- 3:53Speaker 1: the church, been hurt by religion, and so I wanted
- 3:56Speaker 1: to have this book offer up a piece for you
- 3:59Speaker 1: to find that inner spirit. Because when you find that
- 4:03Speaker 1: inner wheel, you know it you can move forward in
- 4:07Speaker 1: your life. Now, when you stay moved forward in your life,
- 4:10Speaker 1: what does that mean? Because it means a lot to
- 4:12Speaker 1: a lot of different people. I just wanted to find
- 4:13Speaker 1: the words that you're trying to emote from your book.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You know. When I when I sat down to write
- 4:21Speaker 1: the book, you know, I started the book because I
- 4:24Speaker 1: was fired. And I opened the book telling the story
- 4:26Speaker 1: of being fired from my dad's UM foundation. And so
- 4:32Speaker 1: now most people are like blown away, like how do
- 4:37Speaker 1: you get fired from your dad? And I was fired
- 4:41Speaker 1: and I knew that I was not living up to
- 4:43Speaker 1: my highest calling and potential I knew that there was
- 4:45Speaker 1: so much more that I wanted to do with my
- 4:47Speaker 1: life and be of service to other people. Um, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: I think that was a moment for me that I
- 4:52Speaker 1: had to get unstuck and move forward. Because some talk
- 4:56Speaker 1: about because I was there for and we had many
- 5:01Speaker 1: conversations in my office lunchtime because you you were really
- 5:07Speaker 1: conflicted about you know, divinity going in that direction to
- 5:11Speaker 1: theology school. Yeah, we had and I was looking at
- 5:16Speaker 1: really really because I hear this conversation and then and
- 5:19Speaker 1: then also the whole aspect of the prospect of running
- 5:22Speaker 1: the foundation. You know, we did the camps and downsividually
- 5:26Speaker 1: to Atlanta. Those are things you were just good at.
- 5:29Speaker 1: That's how I just talking about. You were just talented.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It was a passion that you believed in, but that
- 5:33Speaker 1: wasn't your passion and so and so I always felt
- 5:36Speaker 1: that any advice I gave you really would have been
- 5:39Speaker 1: confusing because of the fact that even though you you
- 5:43Speaker 1: spoke these words all you're very articulate, you're very prominent
- 5:46Speaker 1: in your tone, doesn't mean that's what you wanted to do.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And so so when I when I hear the fact
- 5:52Speaker 1: that you know, you were terminated as the executive director
- 5:55Speaker 1: of the foundation. That doesn't shock because we had these conversations.
- 5:59Speaker 1: It's all alone. At certain times, I'm saying people get
- 6:03Speaker 1: fired or just waiting for you to do the do
- 6:05Speaker 1: your job. It's all you're doing, just waiting. But what
- 6:08Speaker 1: we don't want to do is get hear the words.
- 6:11Speaker 1: You know, we don't want to hear the word. But
- 6:13Speaker 1: way back when you knew what's coming and had all
- 6:18Speaker 1: the signs, were there, all the signs, this is not
- 6:22Speaker 1: worth frustration and complaining, motivation and begredgulingly doing your work.
- 6:29Speaker 1: You're planning other things during those people's times. You know,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you're using those people's cubicles in computers. Absolutely, And that's
- 6:37Speaker 1: that's why. That's why I thought that whole portion of
- 6:40Speaker 1: the idea of you opening the book talking about determination
- 6:44Speaker 1: part and there were some personal things that you talk about,
- 6:46Speaker 1: but believing that's happening every day in America. People are
- 6:50Speaker 1: going to work. Yeah, um, what you're doing over there,
- 6:54Speaker 1: uh long breaks, uh, tying up other employees time with
- 6:59Speaker 1: conversation and that means nothing to the company. And then
- 7:03Speaker 1: you they're going I want to I want to confront
- 7:06Speaker 1: the issue. That's what I loved about you here. You
- 7:08Speaker 1: are in the wrong, you know all the time, but
- 7:10Speaker 1: you're confronting issue. You tell me why I'm fired. Well
- 7:15Speaker 1: you kind of know, but yeah, and that's that. And
- 7:19Speaker 1: so I so I found a humorous because I know
- 7:23Speaker 1: people do this all the time, but not like you.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But not like you. You want to hear the words
- 7:29Speaker 1: come out. Yeah, And I think that's what so many
- 7:32Speaker 1: of us do. We don't understand that we've we've had
- 7:35Speaker 1: the moment of closure, right, but we need to know.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I need to hear it. I need you know, give
- 7:40Speaker 1: me what I'm looking for. Know the closures already happened.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And so many times we miss out on the things
- 7:46Speaker 1: that we're supposed to do with our lives because we're
- 7:48Speaker 1: waiting for someone to give us an answer to the why,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, when we should just move on. When here's
- 7:55Speaker 1: the funny part about it. When you eventually get the why,
- 7:58Speaker 1: then there's more conversation. It's it's come out of the conversation.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And so so that's why I was fascinated and I
- 8:03Speaker 1: thought your book, I feel is a must read. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: I think it's a must read because I think I
- 8:07Speaker 1: see another version, because I feel that when you do
- 8:10Speaker 1: all these interviews like interviews with me, you see how
- 8:14Speaker 1: expansive it is as far as in the corporate world,
- 8:18Speaker 1: in the small business world, because we're dealing with employees
- 8:22Speaker 1: and we're dealing with poor decisions as we make as owners,
- 8:25Speaker 1: as supervisors, as management. Because of the fact that what
- 8:29Speaker 1: you did personally is what every employee is doing in America,
- 8:34Speaker 1: they denial about them being the real problem. The fact
- 8:38Speaker 1: and stuff. You could have resolved everybody's problem if you
- 8:41Speaker 1: just say I resigned. Absolutely, I didn't want to do that,
- 8:45Speaker 1: and don't We want to hold onto things when they're
- 8:47Speaker 1: no longer serving us, they no longer fit us, they
- 8:50Speaker 1: no longer are part of our space, but we want
- 8:52Speaker 1: to hold onto them because we are afraid. We're afraid
- 8:55Speaker 1: to get out of the boat of mediocrity and walk
- 8:57Speaker 1: on water. Okay, So how does the title come about?
- 9:00Speaker 1: And I love the Yeah. The reason I like that
- 9:04Speaker 1: because it feels impossible. Yeah, you know, and that's part
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know, from from the Bible. Yeah, it was definitely
- 9:12Speaker 1: a spiritual undertone to it. Um. I came up with it,
- 9:15Speaker 1: you know, I actually did this message um back at
- 9:17Speaker 1: a retreat in Arizona. I was speaking at a wellness retreat,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I was trying to, you know, come like with
- 9:25Speaker 1: what the message was going to be, because I was
- 9:27Speaker 1: a closing keynote, and it really just I was headlining.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I am. I come from a line of headliners, you know,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and so I was I was trying to figure out
- 9:40Speaker 1: what I was going to talk about. And it was
- 9:43Speaker 1: so many things physically that we happened to me during
- 9:45Speaker 1: that time. But I remember just coming out of meditation
- 9:48Speaker 1: and I was quiet, and I started thinking about like
- 9:52Speaker 1: batteries being sold separately, right like when you the words
- 9:55Speaker 1: Christmas would be like for parents when you you buy
- 9:58Speaker 1: the gift and then there's no batteries included, and so
- 10:01Speaker 1: the toys just sitting there. But then I started thinking
- 10:04Speaker 1: about like how people come to retreats and conferences, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: they come to retreats and conferences and they think that
- 10:09Speaker 1: the breakthrough is going to be included. That I paid,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I pay for the ticket, I pay to get here,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and now that you're supposed to give me the breakthrough,
- 10:17Speaker 1: the breakthrough supposed to happen, but that's so separate, that's
- 10:20Speaker 1: not included. And so in order to get the breakthrough
- 10:23Speaker 1: in your life, you're going to have to test your faith.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And the faith being tested. Idea symbolize it to Jesus
- 10:29Speaker 1: walking on water. But Jesus wasn't the only one that
- 10:31Speaker 1: walked on water. Peter walked on water because he trusted
- 10:34Speaker 1: enough to get out of the boat. He got the
- 10:36Speaker 1: invitation and he got out of the boat to walk
- 10:38Speaker 1: on water. He faltered when his faith faltered, right, And
- 10:43Speaker 1: so the faith, you know, is really what I speak
- 10:46Speaker 1: to in this book, is because in order to get
- 10:48Speaker 1: through any mountain, walk on any water you're going to have,
- 10:51Speaker 1: your faith is going to have to be tested. And
- 10:53Speaker 1: it's not tested when it's easy, right. When it gets
- 10:57Speaker 1: tested when you get fired, it gets tested. It when
- 11:01Speaker 1: you don't have the money. It gets tested when you
- 11:03Speaker 1: don't feel at your best. That's when the faith is tested.
- 11:06Speaker 1: And so that's the opportunity for us. But not only
- 11:09Speaker 1: is it tested, but you actually honestly look at yourself
- 11:12Speaker 1: what you want to do. Because in life I look
- 11:15Speaker 1: at so many people that I I attempt to mentor
- 11:19Speaker 1: that's why I started by making conversations as a mental process.
- 11:22Speaker 1: So many people of years that I bring on the show.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I didn't realize how much of an impact that I
- 11:27Speaker 1: had on them to sitting around having these conversations like
- 11:30Speaker 1: we've had many times. Carley's head. It was one of
- 11:32Speaker 1: my favorite people, and we want to talk about that.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I know the next break, I want to talk about
- 11:35Speaker 1: the twin concept because of the fact that you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: this really is a book about you and that separation.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I think it's important for you because when we initially met,
- 11:46Speaker 1: you guys were really joined that they have but then
- 11:53Speaker 1: I and then and then but I knew that Carli
- 11:57Speaker 1: kind of found herself faster than you. And I always
- 12:00Speaker 1: felt that you will either not happy with yourself or
- 12:04Speaker 1: you just wanted somebody to point you in the right
- 12:06Speaker 1: direction because that may have been easier, and you didn't
- 12:08Speaker 1: want to do the work to get there. And now
- 12:10Speaker 1: you've done the work and it just shows just just
- 12:12Speaker 1: when you walk in the door, the confidence, you know,
- 12:15Speaker 1: but I know there's behind those eyes, there's happiness, and
- 12:19Speaker 1: that's important. Now I'm talking to Brandy Harvey, uh, my
- 12:22Speaker 1: dear friend. Before we're going this break, tell people where
- 12:24Speaker 1: they can buy the book. They can buy the book
- 12:26Speaker 1: on Amazon, you can one click it to your door.
- 12:29Speaker 1: You can do Amazon one click, or you can go
- 12:31Speaker 1: to I am Brandy Harvey dot com, Social Media Digital.
- 12:35Speaker 1: She's a queen Brandy Harvey. We'll be right back. Hi,
- 12:42Speaker 1: just ra Sean McDonald. I am having a great time
- 12:44Speaker 1: with my friend. You know, I almost want to call
- 12:47Speaker 1: my daughter, you know, uh, she's she's one half of
- 12:53Speaker 1: the other daughter. You know, call it Brandy Cally, Brandy Harvey,
- 12:57Speaker 1: call it Brandy Carll. It was always funnish. She's come
- 13:00Speaker 1: by my house. You do my daughters, she always had
- 13:04Speaker 1: the the you know, I was. I was. I have
- 13:08Speaker 1: conversation with them and Carling and Brandon Carl. You just
- 13:11Speaker 1: get over it, brand just get over it. And no,
- 13:14Speaker 1: I'm not no, No, I need answers. I need to
- 13:17Speaker 1: know and call it go whatever, And she won't I do.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I'm just stuck with Brandy. Stuck. Yeah, I'm just stuck
- 13:23Speaker 1: in with because you you want to answer, I'm stuck
- 13:25Speaker 1: with you. I'm stuck with you because you have to
- 13:26Speaker 1: have answers. I do. But that's a part of my nature.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I'm a seeker. I'm a teacher, I'm a learner. I'm
- 13:32Speaker 1: ever student, and so I'm in earth school and I'm
- 13:35Speaker 1: gonna tell you some about her. Is that the funny
- 13:37Speaker 1: part about that, that that that amazing determination to get
- 13:41Speaker 1: to the bottom of it, you know, affects so many
- 13:44Speaker 1: things you're like, in fact, your relationships. It affects how
- 13:47Speaker 1: people approach you. Even when I was reading the book,
- 13:50Speaker 1: when that young lady came in and you ear hustled
- 13:52Speaker 1: her and recommended her at the at the at the
- 13:57Speaker 1: spot at the veganing, I was getting a solid and smoothie. Okay,
- 14:03Speaker 1: just set the story up, okay, and then I'm gonna
- 14:05Speaker 1: just add this part to it. Tell everybody what I'm
- 14:07Speaker 1: talking about. So in the book, I'm talking about I'm
- 14:10Speaker 1: sitting at this you know, local spot here in Atlanta,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and I am I am. I kind of overhear a
- 14:18Speaker 1: girl on the phone. She's she's overweight over here on
- 14:21Speaker 1: the phone talking about, you know, her weight loss and everything.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So when she got off the phone, I was like, hey,
- 14:26Speaker 1: how are you today, and I kind of, you know,
- 14:30Speaker 1: she started, you have some weight issues. I inserted myself.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I did, he has the weight issues. I know the
- 14:37Speaker 1: place that you can go to your issues effects fitness,
- 14:43Speaker 1: And she said, well, she didn't explode. She was very exceptive,
- 14:46Speaker 1: very nice. But I wouldn't expect that because I know
- 14:49Speaker 1: you know how to approach people. That's your gifts. Communication,
- 14:52Speaker 1: that smile, that smile would kill anybody wanted to go,
- 14:57Speaker 1: you go, what's the problem? And so so. But these
- 14:59Speaker 1: are the stories that are in the book that you
- 15:02Speaker 1: that you are started to tell your story, and so
- 15:06Speaker 1: for for all these years. You know, when when I
- 15:09Speaker 1: when I talked about the two thus two thousand and seven,
- 15:12Speaker 1: when I saw you physically make the transformation to fitness,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'm telling I remember when she came into the studio
- 15:18Speaker 1: and I looked at Steve Harving that way, Is that
- 15:20Speaker 1: that that's Brandon? He said, Yes, she's training for some
- 15:23Speaker 1: fitness thing, but she's scaring me because she's losing so
- 15:25Speaker 1: much weight. And you know, I guess I heard the
- 15:27Speaker 1: stories of love, of what he had for you and
- 15:31Speaker 1: all the time all that's too both of you guys,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I heard and and and they were really important, And
- 15:35Speaker 1: you guys were always really important to him in his
- 15:38Speaker 1: personal life. You know. That was that was our driving
- 15:40Speaker 1: force when we we got together as partners in two thousands,
- 15:43Speaker 1: was how can we change just changed the lives of
- 15:47Speaker 1: people around us? But also affect financial change so we
- 15:50Speaker 1: can make sure our children didn't have the lives that
- 15:54Speaker 1: we had growing up. But in the process we kind
- 15:57Speaker 1: of missed communicate that message because especially all children are different.
- 16:02Speaker 1: That's why I love the fact that you know you
- 16:05Speaker 1: and call it are different, Carl. It was accepting of
- 16:07Speaker 1: the process. You needed answers for the process. And one
- 16:11Speaker 1: of the dates that I talked earlier off are about
- 16:14Speaker 1: in eighteen one October nine nineteen one. October nineteen one
- 16:18Speaker 1: was an important date for me in my life because
- 16:20Speaker 1: I was struggling with myself. I didn't know what I
- 16:24Speaker 1: wanted to do. But I tell myself, I said, I
- 16:26Speaker 1: made the commitment to God. This alm gonna take advantage
- 16:28Speaker 1: of all the talents that God gave me, whether it
- 16:31Speaker 1: was acting, writing, being amc or stand up comic. I
- 16:35Speaker 1: was gonna put one effort into everything I I wasn't
- 16:39Speaker 1: gonna make any excuses. And then my life turn on.
- 16:41Speaker 1: That's gonna open to Comedy Club in nineteen two, and
- 16:44Speaker 1: then Steve Harvard played by Comedy Club, and then he
- 16:46Speaker 1: and I wound up being a writer on his TV
- 16:49Speaker 1: shows and the rest of his history. And I've always
- 16:51Speaker 1: worked one. You also have a date that you mentioned
- 16:54Speaker 1: in the book as well. Let's talk about that dating
- 16:56Speaker 1: wise it and why it is important to you. August thirds,
- 17:00Speaker 1: the seventeen was when I found out I was fired,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you know, and it didn't come in a way that
- 17:05Speaker 1: I thought it was going to come. You know. It
- 17:07Speaker 1: was kind of like a company wide email that we
- 17:11Speaker 1: would like to welcome the new And you're like, oh,
- 17:13Speaker 1: that's but the beautiful part of that is two years
- 17:19Speaker 1: to the day, two years to the day I sent
- 17:21Speaker 1: this book off to the publisher. And so I think
- 17:24Speaker 1: that that's just a testament of my own faith, of
- 17:27Speaker 1: my own ability to walk on water. But I think
- 17:30Speaker 1: it's just you know, surrendering to the process. You know
- 17:33Speaker 1: that I had to surrender to the process. That nothing
- 17:37Speaker 1: was going to be simple and easy, but I was
- 17:40Speaker 1: going to have, you know, the tools to do it right.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And I want to point out a couple of things
- 17:44Speaker 1: that I thought was significant in the book. I want
- 17:46Speaker 1: to read a couple of things here. Uh it's called
- 17:49Speaker 1: the cost of emotional Dishonestly, this is what I read.
- 17:53Speaker 1: When you get those designer shoes or that Tesla or Porsche,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you'd be happy when you lose weight and fit those
- 17:59Speaker 1: god those gold jens that those genesus just said go for,
- 18:03Speaker 1: they were too small when you bought them. You'll be
- 18:05Speaker 1: happy when you buy a house and the right zip code.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You'll be happy when you get with the right man, land,
- 18:11Speaker 1: the right job, or party harder than anybody else in
- 18:14Speaker 1: the room. You'll be happy. This pursuit of false image
- 18:18Speaker 1: of happiness, that's what you're saying. That's why do you
- 18:20Speaker 1: say that, you know, I think because I was chasing
- 18:24Speaker 1: those things. I was chasing the party, I was chasing
- 18:28Speaker 1: the material success. And it's still when you got those things,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I still felt empty. I still felt like there was
- 18:36Speaker 1: something missing in my life. And until I went to
- 18:40Speaker 1: really uncover and dig up all of the past traumas
- 18:43Speaker 1: and hurts that it really, you know, impacted my life.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Because often we think, especially as women of color, we
- 18:49Speaker 1: think that, well, it's not a big trauma that happened
- 18:53Speaker 1: to me, you know, no one died or you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but they are little traumas, you know, when you get
- 18:58Speaker 1: abandoned by people and people walk out on you, or
- 19:00Speaker 1: when you've been rejected, or when you've been told certain things,
- 19:03Speaker 1: any stories, they deeply affect you and then they cause
- 19:06Speaker 1: you to make other decisions. And so I was showing
- 19:10Speaker 1: up very emotionally dishonest in my life and my relationships.
- 19:13Speaker 1: You know, I was not setting boundaries. I was leaving
- 19:16Speaker 1: myself very open and susceptible to you know, to the
- 19:20Speaker 1: prey of men. Let's talk about it. I'm talking to
- 19:24Speaker 1: Brandy Harvey. Her book Breakthrough So Separately number one Amazon
- 19:28Speaker 1: when it hit the stands. UM therapy, Yeah, I guess
- 19:33Speaker 1: that's that's a word that in the black community or
- 19:36Speaker 1: the community of color, is a word that's finally starting
- 19:40Speaker 1: to become a word that's okay, okay, it's not it's
- 19:44Speaker 1: not tied to people who are some word got issues
- 19:49Speaker 1: straight jackets right right. So, and that's something that you
- 19:52Speaker 1: talk about in the book. Yea, let's discuss why do
- 19:55Speaker 1: you think that it's a fear or is it a
- 19:58Speaker 1: weakness within the black when you start talking about therapy.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I think we've been very um. We religion has played
- 20:06Speaker 1: such a major part in our lives and spirit you know,
- 20:09Speaker 1: people of color, spirituality is very very keen in our
- 20:13Speaker 1: in our in our experience. UM. But some sometimes we
- 20:17Speaker 1: think that UM going to therapy lessons our relationship with God.
- 20:23Speaker 1: We think that going to therapy is saying that we
- 20:25Speaker 1: don't we're not giving God power, you know, we're giving manpower. Um.
- 20:30Speaker 1: But I think what therapy does it is it gives
- 20:32Speaker 1: us an opportunity to tackle like it and and you know,
- 20:38Speaker 1: kind of going to all the beautiful things that God
- 20:40Speaker 1: has provided for us as a source, as a resource.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You know, we get scared of it because we're afraid
- 20:46Speaker 1: of what we might uncover when we get on that couch.
- 20:48Speaker 1: We're afraid to face some of the things that we've
- 20:52Speaker 1: been told to just get over, you know. And I
- 20:55Speaker 1: was told for such a long time, just get over it,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know, just get over it. I mean, while you steal,
- 21:00Speaker 1: just get over it. But if I knew how to
- 21:03Speaker 1: get over it, I probably would have done it already, absolutely,
- 21:05Speaker 1: And I didn't have the tools to get over it.
- 21:08Speaker 1: And so therapy. Um. I love the fact that now
- 21:10Speaker 1: we're really starting to engage in these conversations around mental
- 21:14Speaker 1: health and our emotional health because I had to start
- 21:17Speaker 1: showing up for myself and I stopped listening to what
- 21:21Speaker 1: the naysayer said. And you don't need therapy, and girl,
- 21:23Speaker 1: just pray about it. Absolutely. I was praying. I promise
- 21:27Speaker 1: I saw you, I saw you. See. That's that's the okay,
- 21:33Speaker 1: Like I told you, this book is like you're gonna
- 21:35Speaker 1: come back. You have four books in here. I know.
- 21:37Speaker 1: The first book about you being fired is a corporate book.
- 21:40Speaker 1: All should be written, it should be expanded because because
- 21:43Speaker 1: the fact you you dealt with sohen you you oversee people,
- 21:46Speaker 1: you made the mistakes as a manager, supervisor, all that
- 21:50Speaker 1: should be written in here. Now this book about what
- 21:52Speaker 1: we just talked about right now, therapy, that's a totally
- 21:56Speaker 1: different book as well. Okay, what you know about which
- 21:59Speaker 1: we should be expanded on that. The next book eating right, Yeah,
- 22:05Speaker 1: it's all connected. You know. I I say who because
- 22:08Speaker 1: she talks about you know, you gotta have that fiber, Yeah,
- 22:11Speaker 1: your fruits and vegetables. Yes, that's what I'm saying. This
- 22:16Speaker 1: This book was so it was so fascinating to me
- 22:20Speaker 1: about because I'm a bad eater, you know, and I
- 22:22Speaker 1: know I know this. I know this to be true.
- 22:25Speaker 1: This is a true statement this man is making right
- 22:28Speaker 1: now and so so reading this book, going okay, she
- 22:31Speaker 1: starts with dessert. Dessert, when you first when you go
- 22:35Speaker 1: out with him, and then and then you go into um.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I guess the whole religious as your faith prospect of spirituality.
- 22:47Speaker 1: But you talk about women in church, plus your black
- 22:51Speaker 1: women in church, how we should be perceived are being
- 22:54Speaker 1: perceived still it's still a male dominated approach. I to
- 23:00Speaker 1: find a brother universe because your mom told you the
- 23:03Speaker 1: story in the book where I was speaking at a
- 23:05Speaker 1: church in Alabama. I was speaking at a church, um
- 23:09Speaker 1: and this was in the Deep South, you know, of Alabama.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I was on a palm Sunday. So of course this
- 23:14Speaker 1: is like for people who are in the Christian faith,
- 23:16Speaker 1: Palm Sunday is like the that's like one of them Sundays.
- 23:20Speaker 1: You know, you're gonna get your palms, You're gonna make
- 23:21Speaker 1: a cross out of it. It's gonna be in your
- 23:23Speaker 1: Bible for three years, you know. So I knew that
- 23:26Speaker 1: this was a big deal, you know. But it was
- 23:29Speaker 1: like the playoffs of church. You know, I'm in the
- 23:32Speaker 1: playoffs and you too. I was going to be in
- 23:34Speaker 1: the pool. I was a word. I was. I had
- 23:37Speaker 1: worked on this message for like two weeks. I was
- 23:39Speaker 1: so ready float over the steps, and I was gonna
- 23:45Speaker 1: be Your mom told you what and my mom said,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I think you should understand that they probably won't allow
- 23:50Speaker 1: you to speak in the poolpit because you're a woman. Know,
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'm Brandy Harvey. I said, no, I'm Brandy Harvey. I said,
- 23:57Speaker 1: I definitely don't think that that would be the case.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Out and I get to the church and they were like, yeah,
- 24:04Speaker 1: a little show you or you'll be speaking from the floor.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And I spoke from and I mean literally my face drop,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you know, because I had to pick my face up
- 24:10Speaker 1: because Amigo was crushed all those things. But I delivered
- 24:15Speaker 1: the message. But in that delivering the message, you know,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I was like, really like, I'm not worthy enough to
- 24:21Speaker 1: stand up here with the with the message because I'm like,
- 24:25Speaker 1: it was just so many things that you know, I
- 24:27Speaker 1: think have have really hurt us. But I think it's also,
- 24:31Speaker 1: you know, I don't look at this book as being
- 24:33Speaker 1: a religious book. I think this book it definitely is
- 24:35Speaker 1: very much on the lines of discovering the power within you,
- 24:37Speaker 1: that we all have this divine power within us to
- 24:41Speaker 1: create the life that we want, you know, well, more importantly,
- 24:45Speaker 1: the reason I have a fun time reading this book,
- 24:48Speaker 1: I remember, he knows I always read books in the
- 24:51Speaker 1: day because they're fresh. I walk in and they know
- 24:55Speaker 1: how you read the books fair well. First of all,
- 24:57Speaker 1: I really you'll give me information day. It's very relatable
- 25:01Speaker 1: motivation that's driven towards UH pointing out thing because you're courageous,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you know, especially when you're talking about women in church
- 25:09Speaker 1: and being able to confront that issue. Your courageous when
- 25:13Speaker 1: you talk about honestly about your relationship with your dad,
- 25:15Speaker 1: you and how you made mistakes and how you was
- 25:20Speaker 1: pushing it, pushing the enveload for information. You talk about therapy,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you talk about relationships with UH, with different men that
- 25:28Speaker 1: you've had in your life from the standpoint of what
- 25:30Speaker 1: you felt that what value that way, as you talk
- 25:33Speaker 1: about weed, you talk about alcohol, all these different things.
- 25:35Speaker 1: That's why I know that you've only given us a
- 25:38Speaker 1: shell of changing our lives. So I just know that
- 25:41Speaker 1: I want to thank you for this book, Brandy, because
- 25:44Speaker 1: of the fact that, first of all, you've got a
- 25:46Speaker 1: portion of your story. This is not the complete Brandy
- 25:49Speaker 1: Harley Harvey story. What it is is a story that
- 25:52Speaker 1: will help change people's lives because your articulation. You're just
- 25:56Speaker 1: standing up here. You have a podcast past. Yeah, but
- 26:00Speaker 1: I do have a weekly newsletter that comes out every Tuesday.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I need a podcast. You need to be talking to
- 26:06Speaker 1: somebody every Brandy Harvey. I will leave you. I will
- 26:12Speaker 1: be talking to some people for you. Look at look
- 26:14Speaker 1: at I'm at the right person. Have you managed me?
- 26:18Speaker 1: I'll just let you know. I'm so impressed with you.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on money making conversations and that
- 26:23Speaker 1: means so much to me. Much I appreciate you. Thank you, Brandon,
- 26:27Speaker 1: thank you
