- 0:43Let's just start and dive in. Hey you, Rachel here.
- 0:51And I have a very cool, very groundbreaking concept today to
- 0:55talk to you about how to map your flow and why that's so
- 0:59important as a corporate leader. Let me get into this flow, flow
- 1:04state. We've all heard of this, right?
- 1:05It's in the zone. It's when we're feeling in the
- 1:07groove, athletes talk about it like the zone.
- 1:10Corporate leaders, I would think and leaders just talk about
- 1:13being in the groove, right? You've you've hit your groove
- 1:16and it's like time doesn't exist when we're in flow.
- 1:20As you know, maybe you've been in it, right?
- 1:22Think of the last time you were in Flow.
- 1:23What were you doing when and how did that happen for you?
- 1:28Maybe you lost track of time, Maybe you felt really good and
- 1:31you just embraced what you were doing and you just felt super
- 1:35excited about what it was and kind of got a little high out of
- 1:39it. We've all kind of experienced
- 1:41this in different ways. The key with Flow is that it's
- 1:45actually a map and I want to share with you how this works.
- 1:48This is from the work of Mahali Cheek set me high, right?
- 1:51So Mahali cheek set me high really came up with this term
- 1:55flow state. And you can check him out in the
- 1:58Wikipedia. He's written lots of papers and
- 2:01I think he even has a Ted talk about this.
- 2:04He is no longer with us. He passed away in 2021, but I
- 2:08want to bring his work in today because it's so important as I
- 2:12really do think this is a map to know how to get out of burnout.
- 2:15In my opinion, if people knew they were in flow or not and
- 2:19then they were able to map themselves in these other states
- 2:21that kind of are around flow, then you could decide how to do
- 2:25something different. So here's how this works.
- 2:27Let me let me share with you. And I know you don't have a
- 2:30visual, so if you want to go to the Wikipedia page for Mahali's
- 2:33cheeks at me, how you'll see this cool graphic.
- 2:35It's like a pinwheel with different states, but I'm going
- 2:38to visualize this for you. So imagine you've got in X&Y
- 2:41axis, X axis, right, X axis, you've got skill level from low
- 2:47to high, So what is your skill level?
- 2:50And on the Y axis you've got challenge from low to high.
- 2:54Low is at the very bottom and challenge is at the very high.
- 2:57So if you're in flow state, what do you think?
- 2:59Where does that match? It's kind of where your skills
- 3:01meet the challenge. So it's not like you're doing
- 3:06things without skill. Whatever your skill is, there's
- 3:08a challenge there. And that's what flow is, was
- 3:11when you've met the challenge in the right appropriate amount of
- 3:14skill. And that makes sense, right?
- 3:16So imagine whatever you were doing when you were in Flow,
- 3:19there was a skill associated with it.
- 3:21You probably put hours in on practice or you've developed
- 3:24your talents enough to know what that is like.
- 3:27It might be gardening, let's say, right?
- 3:28It's not necessarily a talent, but well, maybe it is.
- 3:30For me, it's a talent because I I don't have a lot of green
- 3:33thumb in me. But there's a skill there,
- 3:35right? You need to know how to tilt the
- 3:36soil. You know how to tend the plants,
- 3:38water the plants well, do something in a way that feels
- 3:42good. So what happens when you are not
- 3:46in flow? Like let's say you feel bored at
- 3:50work. Well, if you were to take that
- 3:52same graph and go from low to high skill, my guess is maybe
- 3:58you've got some good skills, but the challenge is low.
- 4:01You're not feeling challenged enough, right?
- 4:03So there's another association with the state.
- 4:06Now that's not flow. Maybe that's boredom and and the
- 4:11graphic is boredom's kind of that lower half of challenge,
- 4:14right? So there's lower, there's less
- 4:15challenge and the skill is like medium because maybe you're not
- 4:20necessarily like fully engaged. So how do you get out of that?
- 4:25And this is great because a lot of times when we're bored or we
- 4:27feel apathy or even ambivalent, it's because we have kind of
- 4:31we're not necessarily challenged.
- 4:32We don't feel like we're motivated in a way that
- 4:36challenges us. So we have to increase our
- 4:38skills. If we increase our skills, we're
- 4:41going to move over in that graph back up to flow because our
- 4:44skills either we're going to develop them and the challenge
- 4:47also needs to rise. It's actually more of the
- 4:50challenge, I think in this case with the boredom, right?
- 4:52So, so you might need to take on something new.
- 4:54Or maybe that means you've exhausted all your your
- 4:57opportunities at this in this role and you need to go outside
- 5:00of the role to get something that serves you in this
- 5:02challenge or ask for a new project or whatever that might
- 5:06be. That's the key with flow.
- 5:09So depending on where you are on this map, maybe you're bored.
- 5:13Maybe you maybe you're overwhelmed, right.
- 5:15Let's go the opposite way. Maybe you're feeling anxious.
- 5:18Well, that's because maybe the challenge is too high.
- 5:20Maybe you're new on the job and like, holy cow, how do I learn
- 5:22all this stuff? Because your skills aren't where
- 5:24they need to be yet. You just started.
- 5:26So the more you can push out the skills, then you'll get into
- 5:29flow because the challenge might stay the same.
- 5:32So all I'm saying here is, first, know where you are on the
- 5:36map. Where are you in your job?
- 5:38Are you in flow state as a leader?
- 5:40Awesome. Like that's ideal.
- 5:42Like really? You can't get better than that.
- 5:44But you can optimize more, right?
- 5:46You can even help others be in flow with you if you're feeling
- 5:50maybe the less less challenge, right?
- 5:53Maybe you're bored, you're totally like relaxed, or maybe
- 5:56you're empathetic, which is like super low.
- 5:59Then we need to increase the the challenges.
- 6:01And if you're on the other end of the spectrum, like you're
- 6:03overwhelmed, you're anxious, it's we need to increase our
- 6:06skills to get to that challenge or we have to change the
- 6:08challenges, right. And so that's the key.
- 6:12And I truly do think that when we're looking at overwhelmed,
- 6:15it's these two levers. We either need to increase our
- 6:18skill and maybe that maybe that's an option, maybe it's
- 6:21not, or we need to change the challenge, we need to shift, we
- 6:24need to either set more boundaries, we need to ask for
- 6:26new projects. It just depends on where you are
- 6:28with regards to the flow state. So I want to pause there because
- 6:33this is a big concept and I also think it's pretty groundbreaking
- 6:38because we don't usually think of flow at all when it comes to
- 6:43feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
- 6:45But the reality is it's actually a big clue as your ideal versus
- 6:50feeling overwhelmed. If we're overwhelmed, clearly
- 6:53we're in this bucket where the challenge is too high and we
- 6:56can't access maybe the skills we need or we don't have the skills
- 7:01or there's more challenges than we can take on, like all these
- 7:04things, which a lot, which lead us to feeling anxious or
- 7:06worried, which is in the map here on the far left and the X&Y
- 7:11axis. So what are you getting out of
- 7:13this for yourself? Because I think there's a take
- 7:15away here for every one of us who's listening to know if
- 7:18you're, if you're not, like there are parts of our lives
- 7:21where we're in flow, which is great, and there might be parts
- 7:23of our lives where we're not in flow.
- 7:25And all that means, by the way, is to say, oh, OK, well, I'm,
- 7:30I'm clearly taking too much on. There's too many challenges
- 7:32here. So what can I do to change to
- 7:34shift that? Can I lower the challenges,
- 7:36meaning maybe setting boundaries, maybe taking
- 7:38something off my plate, maybe prioritizing the three things
- 7:41versus the 10 things? Or do I increase my skills
- 7:44somehow? Do I keep on these challenges?
- 7:47But my skills will increase so that I match them to get myself
- 7:51into flow. And this all comes down to
- 7:54personal choice, right? Like, I think that's the key.
- 7:58Flow exists between boredom and anxiety.
- 8:01So we have to either add the challenge or increase skill to
- 8:04maintain the flow. I think that's a really key
- 8:06concept here. And when you think about stress,
- 8:10it's so simple. Like this is the.
- 8:12This is the key. How do I shift this so I'm in
- 8:16back in my flow, because flow is where the joy is, right?
- 8:19Like think about this zone, right.
- 8:21And I want to share a little bit of the science behind that
- 8:24because I think it's important to note, right.
- 8:26So flow, like if you notice flow, you've lost track of time,
- 8:31let's say, right? There's the, there's the science
- 8:34behind this, which which is really important.
- 8:36So the human brain processes these things at 110
- 8:42milliseconds, meaning you know that's that's to give you A to
- 8:46give you a range. So we process speaking what
- 8:49you're hearing me say right now you're processing at 60
- 8:51milliseconds in your brain. So when you're in flow, you're
- 8:56at peak processing, right. So that's you're taking all the
- 8:58110 things of of the of the how the brain is optimized for for
- 9:03practice which means you're not sensing anything else.
- 9:07Everything is getting directed to this.
- 9:08So that's why we lose sense of time, we're losing awareness of
- 9:12things like other other things like you don't hear anything,
- 9:15you don't you maybe don't smell anything.
- 9:18Like there's things like that because we're optimizing neural
- 9:20processing and we're all directing it towards the
- 9:22activity we're doing. I love knowing that because it
- 9:26makes a lot of sense to me knowing that no wonder we feel
- 9:29like we're in flow. It's there's actually a
- 9:30neurological reason and if we take too much on that's why
- 9:36we're our brain is over processing.
- 9:38It's at this it's it's going it's being asked to go beyond
- 9:40110 milliseconds. So what's interesting to me is
- 9:44if you ever hear two people speak at the same time and then
- 9:47you like can't follow both of them, right?
- 9:49Like you can kind of get pieces of each one, but it's really
- 9:52hard to track two conversations continuously at once.
- 9:56So that would be if you add 60 and 60, right.
- 9:58Remember I said 60 is a one person speaking, that's 120,
- 10:02that's above the human processing of 110 optimization
- 10:06milliseconds. So what that means is we can't
- 10:10do that. Like our brains are not allowed.
- 10:12Like they don't, they don't process at that level.
- 10:15So we lose parts of the two conversations.
- 10:17That's why multitasking is challenging, right.
- 10:19We don't still we lose IQ 10% by the way when we multitask.
- 10:24And so no wonder we want to be in flow because we're at this
- 10:29peak 110, so our brains are humming along.
- 10:31We're super excited because we're doing something that feels
- 10:34really good and and then we're we're not over it.
- 10:39We're like if we're feeling, if we're getting asked to do more
- 10:43then we're over that 110, like that's the anxiety kicking in,
- 10:46that's the worry kicking in. If we're below that, if we're
- 10:49like you know lower, that's when we're bored because our brains
- 10:52have this capacity it wants to fill.
- 10:55So I just love knowing this and I hope you love knowing this
- 10:58because it makes so much sense to me why we're burning out and
- 11:01why people across the planet, one out of three in business,
- 11:05one out of two in healthcare are at their wit's end and and not
- 11:10able to do things and but a part of it lays on us to shift into
- 11:14flow and how do we do that? We either lower the skill or we
- 11:17lower the challenge or we raise one and that's it people, that's
- 11:22it. Which might mean we shift the
- 11:23systems we're in and make requests at work for something
- 11:26different. That's our personal power.
- 11:28We can, we can talk about and I I hope you get to listen to that
- 11:32episode about the inner CEO because it talked a lot about
- 11:34personal power there. But I think this is a big, huge
- 11:37game changer when we start to think about mapping our flow and
- 11:41where we are with Burnout. I hope that this is helpful for
- 11:45you and I know we don't have a visual, but go to the Wikipedia
- 11:48page and Maholey's name is super hard to to to to spell maholey
- 11:54cheeks set me high. So just look up flow State
- 11:56Wiki's flow state and you'll you'll see that there.
- 12:00We do a lot of work about this in my course Executive
- 12:04Leadership Accelerator. We have a whole module on it.
- 12:07I've talked a lot about this with my my one-on-one clients
- 12:11because people are under the assumption that like, flow state
- 12:17is some phenomenon that doesn't exist.
- 12:19If I'm feeling burned out, well yeah, but you can also get there
- 12:23through shifting these skills and these challenges.
- 12:25But if you see the visual, it becomes way more manageable to
- 12:30to know what to do because you're going to see where you
- 12:32fall in the map and you're going to be like, oh, I'm just bored.
- 12:36I'm just or I'm just, I'm just in this worry mode, which is me
- 12:39not matching the skills. I need to grow these skills or I
- 12:42need to decrease the challenges and that will serve me to be in
- 12:46Flow state. I hope this is helpful for you
- 12:49corporate leaders. I know you've got this and if
- 12:52you want, if you have questions, you want to see more, no more,
- 12:54just message me. I'm happy to share more tools,
- 12:57give you some thoughts around that.
- 12:59I've got a lot of really good resources in this.
- 13:01And yeah, this is a big, this is a big one.
- 13:06So thank you so much and I wish you all the best.
- 13:08Excited to hear how it goes with you with Flow.
