- 0:05Hello beautiful humans, and welcome back to another episode
- 0:08of Aligned and Thriving for Teachers.
- 0:11The podcast where teachers who are ready to live intentionally
- 0:15lead with their heart and thrive both in and out of the
- 0:18classroom. This is for you, no matter what.
- 0:22I'm Mel, and I am so glad that you are here.
- 0:26This episode is something I am really excited about.
- 0:30I really enjoyed taking some notes down of what I was going
- 0:33to talk to you about today. And I want to talk to you about
- 0:36something just a little bit different, but oh, it's so
- 0:39powerful. So I've been reading the book
- 0:42Miracles Now by Gabrielle Bernstein and wow, just wow.
- 0:48I've read it so you don't have to like I can give you the gist
- 0:50of it, but if you want to read it, go for it.
- 0:52There are so, so many Nuggets of wisdom in this book.
- 0:57So if you haven't, I would highly recommend.
- 0:59But for now, I'm going to share with you a few gems that have
- 1:03really hit home for me. And I think that they will hit
- 1:07home for you too. So whether you are in your
- 1:10classroom, parenting, working on your side hustles, or just
- 1:12trying to make it through this week, like let's dive in.
- 1:16I'm going to start with one of my absolute favourite lines from
- 1:19the book. Happiness is a choice I make and
- 1:23I want you to sit with that for a second.
- 1:27Happiness is a choice I make. When I first read that I
- 1:33literally just said wow out loud because how often do we forget
- 1:38this? Like we let the world, the
- 1:40chaos, the classroom behaviour, the kids fighting, the late
- 1:44emails, the marking pile, just everything dictate how we feel.
- 1:48But the truth is, we get to choose.
- 1:52Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that that's always easy.
- 1:56It takes effort, it's going to be a daily practise.
- 2:00But when we remember that we, we control our thoughts and we
- 2:06choose how we respond, that's where our power lies.
- 2:12It's just like I said in the Hope episode, like hope is a
- 2:14choice. Well, guess what?
- 2:16So is happiness. So try these today.
- 2:21And I've tried it and I've worked on, I've been working on
- 2:25it for a while now. But when something annoying
- 2:28happens, instead of spiralling or venting, and we all do it,
- 2:31honestly, hands up. Two hands up for me.
- 2:34Take a breath and ask how do I want to feel right now and what
- 2:38can I do to get myself closer to that feeling?
- 2:41That tiny little moment of awareness is everything because
- 2:45you're making a choice. Happiness is a choice I make.
- 2:50Remember when you talk about things with children and you say
- 2:55that their behaviour is a choice because they are choosing how
- 2:59they react to something. I know if you're not a mom, you
- 3:03may not understand, but for moms, for me, I react very
- 3:08quickly to situations. I get frustrated very quickly
- 3:11and I've had to work on that. I own that and I'm still working
- 3:15on that. But This is why I do things like
- 3:17read and listen to podcasts to try and better myself and better
- 3:21my reactions. Excuse me, the hiccups, my
- 3:25reactions to situations. So one in particular is I'm very
- 3:29quick to respond or get agitated when the kids aren't doing what
- 3:31I've asked them to do. But then I've got to remember
- 3:33that I'm making a choice on how I'm reacting to that.
- 3:36Could choose to just get really angry, or I could choose to just
- 3:39take a deep breath and go, OK, you've got this long.
- 3:41We're going to get this done because we always do.
- 3:44I mean, we get frustrated, but it all gets done.
- 3:48And I could choose to react to that situation like this or like
- 3:53that. So which choice you're going to
- 3:54make? So happiness is a choice I make,
- 3:58and I'm going to choose as much as I possibly can to force
- 4:00myself to choose that over anything else.
- 4:03I'm going to choose the happier response, the positive response,
- 4:08because that's the way I want my life to be.
- 4:10So why don't you try that too? Now there we go, the next one.
- 4:18This one hit me deep in the heart, Gabby writes.
- 4:22If I want to feel supported, I must support myself.
- 4:26Mark drop shebang. Hello, how many times have I
- 4:31told you you've got to put your mask on first before you can put
- 4:34anyone else's on? You've got to fill your cup
- 4:37first before you can fill anyone else's.
- 4:39It's the same thing. If you want to feel supported,
- 4:43you have to support yourself first.
- 4:46You have to support yourself to then feel supported and receive
- 4:53that back. I hope that made sense.
- 4:55We're all looking for that external validation.
- 4:58Like, does my team get me? Why does leadership not check in
- 5:01with me? Why am I always the one holding
- 5:03everything together? But the truth is that support
- 5:06starts within, when our thoughts are kind and our energy is
- 5:11aligned. And when we stop being so darn
- 5:14hard on ourselves, the world around us actually shifts.
- 5:18And this was big for me because as teachers, parents, humans
- 5:21like we are so quick to support everyone else.
- 5:24But when is the last time you actually stopped and supported
- 5:26you and had your own back and backed yourself and gave
- 5:30yourself some grace and hi? Sometimes supporting yourself
- 5:34means asking for help. Yep, fill your own cup.
- 5:38You are worthy of that. It is not selfish, I've told you
- 5:40that before. We need to focus on these things
- 5:43to make sure that we're actually looking after ourselves because
- 5:47then we can start doing things for others and we can feel like
- 5:49it's coming back in return because what you're putting out
- 5:52is what you're going to get back.
- 5:53OK, OK, here's a little tool from the book that you can
- 5:58literally do right now, right now with me.
- 6:02OK, so we're going to do a quick little reset because peace
- 6:06begins with me. Peace begins with me.
- 6:10So let's reset together. I want you to take a breath, a
- 6:14big deep breath. So you're going to breathe in
- 6:16through your nose for three and out through your mouth for
- 6:20three. Now, this time when you take a
- 6:23breath, I want you to touch your thumb to your index finger and
- 6:28say the word peace. OK, so thumb and index finger
- 6:32together and you're going to say peace.
- 6:35So and then breathe in peace. Then you're going to move your
- 6:41thumb to your middle finger and say the word begins.
- 6:46OK, begins. Then you're going to move to
- 6:50your ring finger and your thumb and go with and then your thumb
- 6:57to your pinky and say me. OK, so then it sounds like this
- 7:02when you put it all together, is it your thumb?
- 7:06You're working your way through your fingers.
- 7:08So your thumb touches first finger, 2nd, 3rd, 4th.
- 7:10OK, so breathing in peace begins with me and you breathe deep and
- 7:22you can do it again. Peace begins with me.
- 7:30OK? You can do this with your class,
- 7:32you can do it with your own kids, or you can do it by
- 7:34yourself or before a meeting or even in the car.
- 7:36It is a grounding technique. It's really simple, It works.
- 7:41Try it. Honestly, you've just done it
- 7:43with me. I'm hoping unless you were
- 7:45driving, then that was very dangerous of you, so don't do
- 7:48that again, but try that. It's a quick little grounding
- 7:51technique that has got lots of research behind how it resets
- 7:55your brain to stop, think and breathe.
- 7:59OK, next one, let's talk about those nasty little thoughts that
- 8:04sneak into your head. You know, the ones like, I'm not
- 8:07good enough, why do I even bother?
- 8:09I always mess it up. They don't respect me.
- 8:12My house is a mess, so I'm failing.
- 8:15These are called attack thoughts.
- 8:19Attack thoughts because they're literally attacking you from the
- 8:21inside out. Gabby Gabrielle Bernstein So
- 8:24Gabby suggests that wearing a hair tie or a rubber band on
- 8:28your wrist and snapping it every time one of those little nasty
- 8:31thoughts creeps in, literally, it's called snap out of it.
- 8:36You can notice how often during the day these thoughts actually
- 8:39come up and that's your clue. You can't change what you don't
- 8:43acknowledge. So this is helping you to
- 8:47acknowledge that when those little attack thoughts are
- 8:48coming, those little negatives, those little things that gnaw
- 8:51away at you from the inside out, you just give it a flick.
- 8:54You might even have a bracelet and you might just flick your
- 8:56bracelet so it's not obvious. And you take a breath and I
- 8:59forgive this thought. It's not real.
- 9:01I forgive this thought. It's not real because you are
- 9:04not your thoughts, OK? We are the thinker behind the
- 9:08thought, and that's where our power lives.
- 9:11We are the thinker behind the thought.
- 9:13You're not your thought, so you're going to change it.
- 9:16OK, So another little strategy. She's just full of these helpful
- 9:20mindful strategies. And yes, I have tried them all
- 9:24and yes, they have been helping me in my general Wellness of my
- 9:28life. OK, next one.
- 9:32This is a good one and this one was huge for me.
- 9:35So when you feel helpless, help someone.
- 9:39This is actually a quote from, and I won't probably say it
- 9:43right, but Aung San Suu Kyi, OK. And it's a quote from them.
- 9:48And it is so 110% true. When you feel helpless, help
- 9:55someone. When you're stuck in your own
- 9:57head and you're overwhelmed and you're burnt out and you're
- 10:00spinning, do something for someone else.
- 10:02It doesn't have to be big. Just send a kind message to
- 10:06someone, cover a duty, bring a coffee to someone, clean out a
- 10:10drawer, go shave your legs. If it makes you feel better, I
- 10:14just had to throw that one in there because sometimes when I
- 10:16honestly can't get to the bottom of something and my brain is
- 10:18just overloaded, I will go and have a long shower and I will
- 10:21shave my legs and I've just, it helps decompress.
- 10:24Just one of those things. I actually think there's another
- 10:27author that I've read and when I was reading, I was like, Oh my
- 10:29gosh, someone else does that. What's her name?
- 10:32Oh, Denise Dudfield Thomas, She's an Australian author.
- 10:35I've read a few of her books and she actually says when you're
- 10:38really stuck in a situation, just go shave your legs.
- 10:40And I was like, it is a thing. It doesn't have to be a thing,
- 10:44but it is a thing for me and obviously other people.
- 10:48But it just helps to shift your energy.
- 10:50It completely unblocks you. It goes from your stuckness, not
- 10:54a word, but from your stuck self to being useful.
- 10:59And that's where the magic sort of begins.
- 11:01Now, I know when we say you've got to look after yourself, you
- 11:04can't just go look after others and and fill your own cup first.
- 11:07But I'm not saying do this all the time saying do one thing.
- 11:10These are in those moments that you're utterly and ridiculously
- 11:12just trapped and stuck in those thoughts and you just can't.
- 11:14You just don't know what to do. So you're getting out of that
- 11:17headspace. It's just breaking the link
- 11:20basically and starting over. Cool.
- 11:24Next one for you. Now, this one is for those of
- 11:28us, me, who hold on to things which be honest, probably more
- 11:33than just me, but forgiveness is an attitude.
- 11:38It really is, Martin Luther King Junior says forgiveness is not
- 11:43an occasional act. It is a constant attitude.
- 11:47Doesn't that hit hard? Let's forgive ourselves.
- 11:51Let's forgive the rough day, the things we said, the thing that
- 11:55we didn't say. Forgiveness clears space for
- 11:59healing or love and just for energy to just flow, and you've
- 12:04got to start with yourself and then let that ripple out.
- 12:08So forgiveness is an attitude. It's not something that you just
- 12:12do once. You have to continually be doing
- 12:15it and be working on it. Sound good?
- 12:19You do that next one. This is the final one for today,
- 12:24the final little snippet out of this book.
- 12:27The final one is to be more childlike.
- 12:31Yes, even as an adult, even as the teacher, you want to be
- 12:36curious, be silly, Daydream, let go of needing to control
- 12:41everything. And this is when I point to
- 12:43myself. Let go of needing to control
- 12:45everything. Kids are present, they're
- 12:48curious. They forgive really quickly.
- 12:51Literally it's like 5 seconds and then they're playing
- 12:53together again. We can learn so much from them
- 12:56and their innocence. So today when you're doing all
- 13:00of the things, you're flicking your little, you're snapping out
- 13:03of it, you're being forgiving. You're also going to go and be
- 13:06more playful, laugh at something dumb, sing in the car, paint, be
- 13:11curious about something. Just get back into the flow of
- 13:15things. All right, now here were my
- 13:20little Nuggets from today's episode.
- 13:21I just got to recap them for you.
- 13:23So the first one was happiness is a choice that you make.
- 13:27OK? Support starts with you.
- 13:30Peace begins with me. Snap out of your attack thoughts
- 13:35help someone when you feel helpless.
- 13:38Forgiveness is an attitude and be more childlike.
- 13:42So take those little snippets with you today when you need a
- 13:45reset at home, at work, in life. And before I go, because I love
- 13:50to give you just that little bit of work to do your little bit of
- 13:54homework, your quick journal prompts for today, I want you to
- 13:57have a think about #1 like what does happiness look like for you
- 14:01today? What does happiness look like
- 14:03for you #2 how can I support myself better this week #3 what
- 14:11attack thought or thoughts am I ready to release?
- 14:15And make sure you're snapping out of them #4 where do I need
- 14:20to forgive? Is it yourself?
- 14:22Is it someone else? OK, remember, it's an attitude.
- 14:26You've got to choose. Make that choice #5 when's the
- 14:30last time I felt playful or childlike?
- 14:32And how can I invite invite more of that in?
- 14:36OK, so thank you guys. As I keep reading, I'll more
- 14:42than likely do another episode about Miracles now because it is
- 14:48honestly amazing. It is 108 little snippets of
- 14:51Nuggets that she's learned over her growth journey again.
- 14:56So Gabrielle Bernstein, if you haven't read any of her books,
- 14:58she's written quite a few. I've read Super Attractor, which
- 15:02is 1 of hers. I'm in the process of reading
- 15:04and finishing Miracles now and the next one I've got is Self
- 15:07Help. So again, quite a few and she's
- 15:10got more, I know, but they're just the ones that I have.
- 15:12But amazing. OK, so that is your little
- 15:16snippet and I'm sure I'll give you more, but some really
- 15:20helpful strategies to just assist you with your
- 15:23development, your growth, your mindset.
- 15:26And if you love these little chats, please don't forget to
- 15:28share them with a teacher friend or come and say hi at over at
- 15:31Instagram. All of my links are always in
- 15:33the notes down the bottom. I love connecting with all of
- 15:36you and hearing how things are going.
- 15:38But keep showing up, keep choosing happiness and keep
- 15:41believing in your magic. And if no one told you today,
- 15:44just in case they didn't, you are amazing.
- 15:46I love you all and I hope you have the most amazing day,
- 15:49night, evening, whatever you're up to when you're listening.
- 15:53And until next time, stay aligned and keep thriving.
- 15:55And I'll talk to you again soon. Bye, guys.
