- 0:03electric wires. Not just any wires, power lines.
- 0:07Wires carrying enough electricity to power hundreds of
- 0:10homes, light up entire streets, and probably cook a fairly large
- 0:14Turkey in about four seconds. And those birds are just sitting
- 0:17there, feet on the wire, eyes half closed, completely fine,
- 0:22chilling like they're on a little feathery holiday.
- 0:25So here's the question. Why don't they get electrocuted?
- 0:29Why aren't they getting zapped, fried, or launched off the wire
- 0:32like a tiny confused firework? Today, we're going to find out.

- 1:15in, I need to tell you about something brilliant that
- 1:17happened after last week's episode.
- 1:19You know how we talked about what happens if lightning
- 1:21strikes a car? Well, a kid called Freddie from
- 1:24Cape Town was listening, and after the episode, he looked out
- 1:27of his window, saw some birds sitting on a power line, and
- 1:30immediately sent us a question that genuinely made me stop
- 1:33walking and stand in the middle of the kitchen thinking for
- 1:35about 3 minutes. Freddie wanted to know, why
- 1:39don't birds get electrocuted when they sit on wires?
- 1:43Freddie, that is a spectacular question.
- 1:46It's the kind of question that hides in plain sight.
- 1:49Every single one of us has looked up at birds on wires
- 1:52probably hundreds of times, maybe even waved at them like a
- 1:55complete weirdo, and not once thought, hold on, shouldn't
- 1:58those little creatures be absolutely fried right now?
- 2:00And yet here we are, and nobody has ever seen a Sparrow explode.
- 2:05Which honestly, is a bit of a miracle when you think about it.
- 2:09So today we're going to answer it.
- 2:11And by the end of this episode, you'll understand something
- 2:13about electricity that most adults couldn't explain even if
- 2:16you gave them a week. A large white board and a very
- 2:19encouraging sticker chart. Let's start with the most
- 2:23important thing about electricity, because people get
- 2:25this wrong all the time. Electricity is not like a
- 2:27monster that zaps everything it touches.
- 2:29It's more like a very lazy river.
- 2:32It only flows when it's got a complete path from one place to
- 2:35another. Scientists call this a circuit.
- 2:37Without a complete circuit, electricity just sits there
- 2:40doing absolutely nothing. Like that one person in a group
- 2:43project who never pulls their weight.
- 2:45It needs a reason to move, and if it hasn't got one, it won't
- 2:47bother. Now here's where the bird comes
- 2:50in. When a bird lands on a single
- 2:52power line, both of its feet are on the same wire at nearly the
- 2:56same point. Because of that, there's almost
- 2:58no difference in electrical pressure, which scientists call
- 3:01voltage, between 1 foot and the other.
- 3:03And if there's no difference in voltage across the bird's tiny
- 3:06little body, the electricity has no good reason to go through it.
- 3:09The current stays in the wire because the wire is a much, much
- 3:12better path. The bird is basically invisible
- 3:15to the electricity. It's just being completely
- 3:18ignored, like a soggy crisp at a birthday party.
- 3:21Here's a brilliant way to picture it.
- 3:23Imagine a really fast water slide with loads of water
- 3:25rushing through it at top speed. Now imagine someone puts a
- 3:28slightly damp sock next to the slide and says hey water, what
- 3:32about going through this instead?
- 3:34Is the water going to stop and go through the sock?
- 3:36No, absolutely not. The sock is a terrible route.
- 3:40The birds body is that sock, the power line is the water slide
- 3:43and the electricity just keeps zooming along completely
- 3:46unbothered, not even glancing at the bird.
- 3:48Now, I can already hear some of you thinking, but Charlie, if
- 3:51the wires full of electricity, surely the bird gets at least a
- 3:55tiny bit zapped. And honestly, fairpoint, the
- 3:58truth is a very, very tiny amount of current might
- 4:00technically pass through the bird.
- 4:02So small it's measured in something called micro amps.
- 4:04To give you an idea of how tiny that is.
- 4:06It's like comparing a single raindrop to an Olympic swimming
- 4:09pool. The bird doesn't feel it.
- 4:10It's nothing. It probably feels more
- 4:12discomfort from the wind than from that, but here's the twist.
- 4:16This is the bit that makes the whole thing genuinely
- 4:19interesting. Birds actually can be
- 4:22electrocuted on power lines, it just usually doesn't happen.
- 4:25And here's exactly why. It only becomes dangerous when a
- 4:29bird touches 2 wires at the same time, or when it touches a wire
- 4:32and something connected to the ground, like the metal pole
- 4:35holding the wires up. When that happens, the bird's
- 4:38body suddenly becomes a bridge between two points with
- 4:41different voltages that gives the electricity a brand new path
- 4:45to travel. And electricity, being the
- 4:47opportunist it is, will absolutely take it straight
- 4:50through the bird. Not great for the bird.
- 4:54This is why small birds are generally safer than big ones.
- 4:58A tiny Sparrow sitting neatly with both feet on one wire is
- 5:01almost always fine, but a large bird like a hawk or an eagle
- 5:06with a massive wingspan might accidentally clip a second wire
- 5:09or the top of a pole when it's landing or taking off.
- 5:12At that point, things go very wrong very quickly.
- 5:15Power companies actually spend serious money designing
- 5:17equipment to protect large birds of prey from exactly this
- 5:21problem. So next time you see a hawk
- 5:23flying near some wires, give it a little nod of respect, because
- 5:26it's navigating A genuinely tricky obstacle course.
- 5:31Now you're probably wondering, OK, but why do humans get
- 5:33electrocuted if birds don't? Here's the key difference.
- 5:37Humans are almost always touching the ground, and the
- 5:40ground has a very different electrical otential to a live
- 5:43wire. So if you touch a live wire
- 5:45while you're standing on the ground, your body connects 2
- 5:47points with completely different voltages.
- 5:49The electricity suddenly has a brilliant new path, and it takes
- 5:53it straight through you. You've accidentally become the
- 5:55circuit. You are the sock.
- 5:57Except now you're a soaking wet sock touching both the water
- 6:00slide and the ground at the same time, and the water is coming
- 6:04through you whether you like it or not.
- 6:07Birds perched on a single wire aren't touching the ground at
- 6:10all. They're just floating up there
- 6:12in the sky, completely isolated, minding their own business with
- 6:16no path for electricity to follow.
- 6:18It's not that they're protected by some kind of bird magic, it's
- 6:22that they accidentally follow all the rules of electricity
- 6:26perfectly without even knowing any of the rules.
- 6:29Which is honestly quite impressive for a creature whose
- 6:31brain is roughly the size of a walnut.
- 6:34A small walnut. This is also why electricians
- 6:38wear special rubber gloves and boots.
- 6:40Rubber is a terrible conductor, meaning electricity genuinely
- 6:45struggles to pass through it. So electricians basically borrow
- 6:48the bird's trick on purpose, just with better fashion choices
- 6:52and hopefully a bit more awareness of what they're doing.
- 6:56The big lesson here is that electricity follows rules.
- 6:59Strict, logical, completely predictable rules.
- 7:02It needs a voltage difference and a complete path.
- 7:05It doesn't randomly ZAP things for fun.
- 7:08It has to have a reason to move through something, and if that
- 7:11reason isn't there, it simply won't.
- 7:13A bird on one wire in mid air just doesn't give it a reason.
- 7:16The electricity moves on without a second glance.
- 7:20Those exact same rules are what make your games console work,
- 7:23what powers your telly, what charges your tablet, and what
- 7:27keeps the lights on in your house.
- 7:29The principle that keeps a bird safe on a wire is the same
- 7:32principle that engineers use to build almost everything
- 7:35electrical on the planet. So next time someone tells you
- 7:38birds are simple creatures, you can tell them that birds are
- 7:42accidentally brilliant electrical engineers and see
- 7:44what face they make, right? You know what time it is?

- 8:29electrical pressure difference across the bird's body, and the
- 8:32current stays in the wire where it belongs.
- 8:34Although C would absolutely be my favorite nature documentary.
- 8:38Question 2. When does a bird actually become
- 8:42in danger of being electrocuted? Is it A when it sings too loudly
- 8:47and the electricity gets annoyed?
- 8:49B when it touches 2 wires or a wire and a grounded object at
- 8:53the same time? Or C when it's eaten too many
- 8:57chips and becomes an unusually good conductor?
- 9:04The answer is B. When a bird accidentally
- 9:07connects 2 points with different voltages, its body creates a
- 9:11path for the current, and that's when the danger becomes very
- 9:14real. Chips are generally fine for
- 9:16birds. Probably don't test that.
- 9:19Question three. Why do humans get electrocuted
- 9:22more easily than birds on power lines?
- 9:25Is it A because humans are significantly more delicious to
- 9:29electricity? B because humans are usually
- 9:32touching the ground, which completes the circuit, or C
- 9:36because electricity just doesn't like people, and honestly, who
- 9:39can blame it? The answer is B humans are
- 9:47nearly always in contact with the ground, which is at a
- 9:50different electrical potential to a live wire.
- 9:52That connection completes the circuit and the current flows
- 9:55through the body. Electricity doesn't actually
- 9:58have opinions about people. Probably.
