- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:16Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:20I am Deacon Al Lundy, and good evening to my mother-in-law, Margaret,
- 0:24who listened to my program for the first time last weekend.
- 0:29And I think, what, I've been on the air three years?
- 0:32Close to three years? Maybe more than that? And my mother-in-law listened to
- 0:36my show for the first time. She doesn't have internet.
- 0:39So we had to teach her how to listen in on how did we do that?
- 0:45Somehow my wife got her to listen to the program.
- 0:47But she enjoyed it. So that's good. So I hope you're listening again, Margaret.
- 0:52And what was that? Oh, that was leading me to talk about blessings and vacation.
- 0:58So, I've had many blessings in my life, and thank you, God, for that,
- 1:02because they're undeserved, they're unearned, they're just simply gifts from
- 1:06God, and I appreciate and value each one of them.
- 1:10And one of the real blessings I've had in my life is my wife's family is truly wonderful.
- 1:17I mean, I have great in-laws. My father-in-law, God rest his soul,
- 1:22one of the great men in my life I probably loved and respected.
- 1:27Did Tony as much as I did my own father.
- 1:30And Margaret Marge, my mother-in-law, is just such a wonderful woman.
- 1:36Very faithful, very joyful, 95 years old, still lives on her own,
- 1:42does her own cooking, her own grocery shopping.
- 1:45Now, my wife or my sister-in-law takes her to the store, but Margaret does her own shopping.
- 1:52Good for her. She does a lot of her own housekeeping. I mean,
- 1:55she's living independently at 95.
- 1:58That's amazing. That is amazing. And she's just the nicest woman.
- 2:03I love when she comes over to the house to visit.
- 2:05I love having her as a guest.
- 2:08And my sister-in-laws, I have two sister-in-laws. Sharon has an older sister and a younger sister.
- 2:13And they're both terrific women. I mean, just so much fun to be around when
- 2:18the three of them are in one room together.
- 2:20I need a giggle break. I mean, because it gets so noisy because the three of
- 2:25them just keep each other in stitches.
- 2:27And I often have to find reason to go out to the backyard and fix a fence or
- 2:33something to get away from the noise.
- 2:36But they're really, they're just all really sweet women.
- 2:39So Donna, my wife's older sister, is married to Dave.
- 2:45And Dave and I are just great friends. We've always gotten along really, really well.
- 2:51We're both into gardening and landscaping, and Dave did it professionally until
- 2:56he retired just last November.
- 2:58And so when he comes to my house, we end up out in the garden working.
- 3:02When I go to his house, we end up out in his yard, in his garden working.
- 3:07And we just have a great time together. But we're very, very different people.
- 3:13Catholic on my side, Lutheran on Dave's side, but he's very devout in his Lutheran
- 3:20faith, as I am in my Catholic faith, or at least try to be.
- 3:24But we do things very differently. Even our vacations, and this is what I'm going to get at.
- 3:30I vacation a very specific way, and so does Dave, and they're complete opposites.
- 3:36So Sharon and I right now are planning July's vacation.
- 3:41And this isn't the first month we started. We started in July when we got back from the last vacation.
- 3:47Within a week, we were already planning the next vacation a year from now.
- 3:53And we have to do that because I'm really busy.
- 3:57The church keeps me really, really busy.
- 4:00Keeping the church, my responsibilities at the church going,
- 4:03my responsibilities at home going, it keeps me really, really busy.
- 4:07So things like a vacation I have to plan way in advance.
- 4:11Dave and Donna do not do that. Dave and Donna decide, let's go on vacation next week.
- 4:17That's what they do. And they have a wonderful vacation. And Sharon and I have wonderful vacations.
- 4:24But mine are planned down to great detail.
- 4:29I mean, this is October, early October.
- 4:32Our vacation is going to be in July. We have our airline tickets.
- 4:36We have our hotel accommodations already reserved.
- 4:40I already know some of the activities we're going to do, and we've bought tickets.
- 4:44By the end of this week, I will know where we will be going to Mass and at what
- 4:49time while we're gone, right?
- 4:52I mean, when we leave, we know exactly where we're going, when we have to be there.
- 4:56Now we've got some gaps in there to where we can say, okay, if this doesn't
- 5:00work out, we can do it another day.
- 5:04Or if the weather's bad, that's okay. We can stay at the hotel for a day.
- 5:08That's not going to matter. So I have off time planned in there,
- 5:11but like this next vacation is going to include airliners, float planes,
- 5:18trains, boats, all within a two-week period.
- 5:22I mean, that's why you have to plan in advance. I mean, you can't just go and
- 5:26do this stuff. Dave can. I don't see how he does this.
- 5:30Dave and Donna leave the house. They decide, hey, next week, let's go on vacation.
- 5:33And they'll pack. And here's the extent of their planning.
- 5:38Let's go east. That's it. Pack their bags for two weeks. Let's go east. They'll start driving.
- 5:47Well, where do you want to stay tonight? Well, where do we think we'll be?
- 5:50Well, we might be to this point. Well, let's get online while they're driving.
- 5:55If Dave's driving, Donna gets online and she finds a place for them to stay
- 5:58that night. And they just, they do two weeks like that.
- 6:02What do you want to do today? I don't see what we run into.
- 6:04And all they know is they want to get to the Atlantic Ocean.
- 6:08They know that. And they want to get home in two weeks. And other than that, it's whatever comes up.
- 6:15I can't do that. I can't. I've got to have times and calendars.
- 6:20I've got to know where I'm going to lay my head down.
- 6:24I've got to know what am I going to do this day? What's the big event for this particular day?
- 6:29And we both have wonderful, wonderful vacations. And they're nothing alike.
- 6:35Well, the reason I bring that up is, I don't know what you're,
- 6:39I'm talking to my seven listeners out there,
- 6:42including Margaret, I don't know how you plan your religious obligations,
- 6:50how you plan your worship.
- 6:52Maybe you don't. Maybe you don't know what church service you're going to go to yet this weekend.
- 6:58Maybe you don't even know what church you're going to go to this weekend.
- 7:02I can't do that. I have to know where and when. I have to know exactly.
- 7:07I have to put my prayer time into my calendar so that I don't work through it.
- 7:12I have to know when I'm going to pause for adoration or any kind of work. I have to plan my study.
- 7:20When am I going to study Scripture?
- 7:23How long am I going to? I have to know that ahead of time. I have to purposely
- 7:28plan for my faith, where some people can just get up in the morning and they're
- 7:35perfectly faithful during the day.
- 7:37They participate in prayer, perhaps adoration, go to a church service,
- 7:43whatever, but they just go wherever the good Lord takes them,
- 7:49wherever the Holy Spirit drives them to, that's what they do.
- 7:53And we both have good, fulfilling religious lives.
- 8:03Piety, study, action, times where we use our Christian faith to help others,
- 8:10put our faith into action.
- 8:12So we all do that, but very different ways.
- 8:17And I guess I bring that out because, and this will come out in our readings
- 8:22for the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time that we're going to be talking about.
- 8:27It's okay if the way you live your faith life isn't the same way that your neighbor
- 8:34does it, or the same way I do it, or the same way you do it, John.
- 8:38It doesn't have to follow any particular pattern. what works best for you.
- 8:45If you're not getting in prayer time and you're not getting in worship time,
- 8:49then maybe you need to become more.
- 8:54More like me in the way that I have to plan it. If you're getting plenty in
- 8:58without a plan, good for you. Go for it.
- 9:01As long as you're getting the job done. You know, as long as my brother-in-law
- 9:05and my sister-in-law have a good vacation, how they have it really doesn't matter.
- 9:11But if you're going to go on vacation, have a good vacation.
- 9:14With them, it's just spur of the moment, and with me, it takes a year of planning.
- 9:21Neither is bad, neither is better. It's just, as long as you're achieving the
- 9:27goal, I guess the question is, have the goal.
- 9:30What's your goal when it comes to your faith life?
- 9:34Where do you want to be in your relationship with Christ?
- 9:38And how you get there is up to you. But as long as you're making that happen,
- 9:44That's the important part.
- 9:46So Dave and Donna, when you head east, have a wonderful vacation.
- 9:50We're heading west. I'm sure we're going to have another. I don't think we're
- 9:54going to bump into each other this time.
- 9:55But just have a great time and do it your way as long as you reach your goal.
- 10:02And we're going to talk about reaching our goals in our readings,
- 10:06which are going to come up pretty soon.
- 10:08We're going to pause for a few minutes, listen to some friends from the station,
- 10:11and then we'll be back to Catholic Spirit Radio and more good news. Stay tuned.
- 10:16Good news will be right back on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 10:19Catholic Spirit Radio invites everyone for an outdoor rosary and song event
- 10:24on Tuesday, October 7th, which is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
- 10:29The event parking lot opens at 6 p.m. with refreshments, fellowship,
- 10:32and tours of the radio station. The rosary begins at 7 p.m.
- 10:36With Marian songs interspersed throughout the prayers. Bring your rosary lawn
- 10:41chair family and friends to 108 Boykin's Place in Normal.
- 10:44Let's pray and sing for Mary's intercession for peace and to unite our nation under God.
- 10:51And welcome back to Good News. I'm Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the
- 10:56Peoria Diocese, and a pleasure to be speaking to all of you,
- 11:00regardless of what diocese you're in.
- 11:02And we're reaching, I think, five now out of our many frequencies and stations
- 11:07that are part of the network of Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 11:10And it's a joy to have you all with us. And it's nice because we all share the
- 11:14same readings at our Mass this weekend.
- 11:17And so this part of the program where we do reflections on the reading can be
- 11:23addressed to all of us because we all share that in our Catholic faith.
- 11:27So our first reading this weekend, the 27th Sunday of Ordinary Time,
- 11:32I can't believe how fast the year has gone. Just incredible.
- 11:36I've already seen Christmas decorations. It's not even Halloween,
- 11:40and Christmas decorations are going up in the stores.
- 11:43That's just crazy. So our first reading is from the book of the prophet Habakkuk.
- 11:48And Habakkuk is not one we hear from a lot.
- 11:52So it's nice that we delve into all the prophets of the Old Testament throughout the year.
- 11:59Our second reading is Second Letter to Timothy from Paul, and our gospel is
- 12:05still Luke because we're in that cycle. Cycle C is the Luke cycle.
- 12:10So this first reading, as I was looking at this, it's amazing.
- 12:15I'm always fascinated how these scriptures from over 2,000 years ago are still so current,
- 12:24so effective to what we're going through in this time.
- 12:30And as I read this, all I could think about was Charlie Kirk.
- 12:34And I think you'll see why. So, from the book of the prophet Habakkuk.
- 12:39How long, O Lord! I cry for help, but you do not listen. I cry out to you violence,
- 12:46but you do not intervene.
- 12:47Why do you let me see ruin? Why must I look at misery?
- 12:51Destruction and violence are before me. There is strife and clamorous discord.
- 12:56Then the Lord answered me and said, Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets,
- 13:02so that one can read it readily.
- 13:04For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment,
- 13:09and will not disappoint.
- 13:11If it delays, wait for it. It will surely come. It will not be late.
- 13:17The rash one has no integrity, but the just one, because of his faith,
- 13:22shall live. The word of the Lord.
- 13:25Now, remember, in Habakkuk's time, this scripture was very relevant.
- 13:31And if you think about it, it's still relevant in the actions we see today.
- 13:37We see such violence around us. I mean, just in the last three weeks,
- 13:41think of all the shootings that have taken place at churches,
- 13:45and again, with Charlie.
- 13:48So, why do we have to see all this violence? Why do we have to see all this ruin?
- 13:55Why do we have to look at misery? Well, it's because of sin.
- 13:59It's because man is still sinning.
- 14:02This isn't the work of God that we're seeing. This isn't God who's causing this
- 14:06violence. This isn't God who's causing this chaos.
- 14:10This is the sin of human beings. And God tells us that that's going to happen.
- 14:16That's going to be with us throughout time because we can't get rid of sin.
- 14:20We can choose not to sin, but we can't get rid of sin. We can choose not to participate in it.
- 14:28We can choose to take another road. We can choose to be different.
- 14:32Charlie Kirk chose to be different, right? The martyrs throughout time chose to be different.
- 14:39They chose to not go with the sinful activity of society and to be different,
- 14:46to make a different choice, to stand out as representatives of Christ.
- 14:51And for that, violence came to them. They didn't seek it.
- 14:56Violence was brought to them. And that's going to continue to happen.
- 15:00The violence and the chaos we see will ebb and flow.
- 15:04At times in our lives, it will be greater. At times, it will be lesser.
- 15:08But it's never going to be gone until the final judgment.
- 15:14And God's telling Habakkuk, be patient. It's going to happen.
- 15:19I've promised you it's going to happen.
- 15:22That eventually, all the just will be with me in heaven.
- 15:27It's just not today. And so, we have to persevere.
- 15:32We have to be patient and persevere and continue to be examples of Christ's
- 15:40love and not get caught up in the violence and the chaos of the world.
- 15:46I look at what's going on right now in Portland. Oh my gosh.
- 15:50I mean, the streets are in absolute chaos.
- 15:53And they wait till evening, they wait till the dark, right? And Scripture tells
- 15:57us over and over again, we are people of light, right?
- 16:00And what happens in the dark, God sees.
- 16:03So, these mobsters who think that because they come out at night and do this, they have anonymity,
- 16:11they might be able to hide from the community, they might be able to hide from
- 16:17human law, But they can't hide from God's law.
- 16:21But, you know, you sit here and you look at this and you think this is awful.
- 16:25Something has to be done.
- 16:27Well, speak up against it like Kirk did.
- 16:30And yes, you might end up with the same results that Charlie Kirk got.
- 16:36Someone may take your life because you have stood up for Christ.
- 16:42You know, there are worse things that can happen to you. So it takes a certain
- 16:48amount of bravery, a certain amount of courage, and we're offered that courage
- 16:53through the Holy Spirit.
- 16:54The apostles were given that courage when they were hiding in the upper room
- 16:58that allowed them to go out and preach the gospel to the world.
- 17:02And for those of us of the Catholic faith, as we accept the graces of confirmation,
- 17:08we're offered that same courage, that same grace.
- 17:11This radio station, this is an example of the grace of courage from the Holy Spirit.
- 17:19Here's a radio station on the air, 24 hours, seven days a week,
- 17:23speaking out against the secular society and saying, you don't have to be like that.
- 17:29You don't have to be focused on egotism, you know, through all the social media.
- 17:36It's just amazing the amount of egotism that saturates that.
- 17:40You don't have to be lured by wealth. You don't have to be lured by addictions.
- 17:46There are other choices you can make. There are godly choices.
- 17:50We're called to be Christ-like.
- 17:53In Paul's letter to Timothy, in the second letter to Timothy in the first chapter,
- 17:58Paul writes to Timothy, Beloved, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of
- 18:04God that you have through the imposition of my hands.
- 18:08For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather of power and love and self-control.
- 18:14So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake.
- 18:21But bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.
- 18:26Take as the norm the sound words that you've heard from me in faith and love
- 18:32that are in Christ Jesus.
- 18:34Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.
- 18:39The Word of the Lord. So here's Paul in his day saying the same thing that the church says today.
- 18:46Have courage. Make better choices. don't be swayed by society.
- 18:52Turn away from sin, turn toward Christ.
- 18:56And so this message has not changed, nor has the teaching that.
- 19:04Takes courage. You can't be a Catholic and be cowardly. You can't do both.
- 19:10C.S. Lewis said, if you're looking for an easy way of life, don't choose Catholicism.
- 19:16There's nothing easy about being an actual Catholic.
- 19:21There's nothing easy about standing up for Christ's love, Christ's forgiveness.
- 19:26It's a tough road. It's very demanding of you personally, and it's going to
- 19:32make you look odd to a large part of society.
- 19:37It is. And some people are going to see you so odd, they're going to think that
- 19:42you need to be done away with.
- 19:44And you wouldn't be the first martyr.
- 19:46We've had martyrs for 2,000 years for the very same reason.
- 19:52They just said, no, I'm not going to do it your way. I'm going to do it Christ's way.
- 19:57And that actually made people angry. And I've had people say,
- 20:02how could anybody want to kill Charlie Kirk? He never said anything bad about anyone.
- 20:07He spoke what he saw as the truth. He never called anyone a name.
- 20:10He never really, he didn't discourage anybody. He tried to encourage them into a better decision.
- 20:17And yet they killed him. Well, they killed Christ. What did he do wrong?
- 20:23Who did he attack? No one. And yet we, as a society, murdered God incarnate.
- 20:31So, if you see that that could even happen to Christ, then you know it could happen to any of us.
- 20:38It takes courage. Standing up for your faith is not something for the faint of heart.
- 20:44Our gospel reading is Luke, and the apostles said to Christ, Increase our faith.
- 20:52And the Lord replied, If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,
- 20:57you would say to this mulberry tree, Be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.
- 21:03Who among you would say to your servant, who just came in from plowing or tending
- 21:09sheep in the field, Come here immediately and take your place at the table?
- 21:13Would he not rather say to him, prepare something for me to eat?
- 21:18Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink?
- 21:21You may eat and drink when I'm finished.
- 21:24Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?
- 21:28So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded to
- 21:33do, say, we are unprofitable servants.
- 21:36We have done only what we are obliged to do.
- 21:40So there's really two parts to this reading. The first part,
- 21:44quite short, is about...
- 21:48The capability of faith. We all start with the faith of mustard seed from our baptism.
- 21:55We have just enough faith to get us through our baptism, basically.
- 21:59I mean, we know soon on in our Christian lives who Christ is, who God is.
- 22:06We know about the miracles that we read about in the Bible. But have you ever parted a river?
- 22:12No. Have you ever brought someone back from the dead? No, probably not.
- 22:18Helped a blind man to see, a lame man to walk? No. Does that mean it didn't happen?
- 22:24No. It just means that in comparison to the amount of faith that Christ,
- 22:31the man God, had in God compared to our faith, what we have is minimal.
- 22:37We have just enough faith to get by on.
- 22:40Could we have better faith, bigger faith, more powerful faith?
- 22:43Absolutely but how many of us make that effort,
- 22:47I know priests I know one priest in particular left a grocery store with another
- 22:55priest they'd done their shopping for their rectory and he sees a man sitting in a pickup truck,
- 23:03and this acquaintance of mine went over and tapped on the window and had the
- 23:08guy roll the window down and he said you're in a lot of pain aren't you just out of the blue.
- 23:15And the man in the pickup said, well, yeah. And the priest said, you're going to be okay.
- 23:20Christ is going to heal you. May I pray with you? And the fellow was just dumbfounded.
- 23:26And the priest prayed with him and they exchanged names and talked about what
- 23:33this man, he had some pretty severe medical issues.
- 23:37And about a week later, the priest gets contacted by this fellow who he just
- 23:41walked up to in the parking lot and said, I want you to know I'm okay.
- 23:48Everything turned out fine. I went back for my doctor's appointment,
- 23:52and what they thought was the problem wasn't there. It was something much,
- 23:57much more minor and some simple medications, and I'm going to be fine.
- 24:02He said, but when you came up to me in the truck, he said, I honestly thought
- 24:05that I was going to die. He says, I was that sick.
- 24:10And so, yeah, I don't know. I'm not ready to say miracle, but I'm ready to say
- 24:15God's intervention, certainly.
- 24:19I don't know that, I don't think it was ever put up for a miracle.
- 24:22But I know that this priest has done this more than once, where he has offered
- 24:27the sacrament of healing, and
- 24:29it has taken a physical form where it truly physically healed that person.
- 24:36So I think there are some people who are so strong in their faith that they
- 24:41accomplish things that we can't even imagine us doing because we have so little
- 24:45trust in ourselves and in our own faith that we aren't able to manifest these things.
- 24:52But Christ is telling us in here it's possible and it's available to us,
- 24:58but we have to exercise that faith muscle more.
- 25:04And many, many, many of us don't do that.
- 25:08I'll admit that I try to be a very, very faithful person. Have I ever helped
- 25:15a miracle to happen? Not that I know of.
- 25:18I don't think I could uproot a tree and have it replant itself.
- 25:22But I believe Christ when he says I should be able to do that.
- 25:25I could do that if I were able to bring my faith to that level.
- 25:30The second part of this is about the story about the servant,
- 25:33and it's not really against the master.
- 25:37It's not saying the master is being mean by demanding that the servant wait on him.
- 25:42It's saying that the servant realizes their humility.
- 25:47They realize their responsibility.
- 25:51The servant has agreed to serve. And if he does serve, he shouldn't brag and
- 25:56say, look at me, I served. I served.
- 25:59And you say, well, how does that tie into religion? Well, how many people do
- 26:01you know say, oh, look at me. I go to confession every week.
- 26:04Oh, look at me. I go to church every Sunday.
- 26:06Oh, look at me. I go to adoration three times a week. Or I say the rosary every night.
- 26:12And then somebody cuts them off in traffic and they shoot them the bird,
- 26:17right? Or they swear at them.
- 26:19Or they don't have good relationships with their neighbor.
- 26:24You know, they carry a grudge against the neighbor for some minor offense.
- 26:27Or they have poor relations with their own family.
- 26:32Where's the love? Where's the forgiveness? Don't say, I do this for God and
- 26:39then don't do what God asks us to do.
- 26:42So that's really the message here is be modest. Don't think because you do these
- 26:48things, you're better than other Christians.
- 26:50No, you're doing the least of what's expected of you.
- 26:53Your reward doesn't come here. It doesn't happen in this life.
- 26:57That you don't get your accolades from other human beings.
- 27:02Your reward comes from Christ, and it'll come at its own time,
- 27:06and that'll be at your final judgment.
- 27:09Something to consider, something to pray about, something to listen for as you study these readings.
