- 0:15Speaker 1: home money movement on social media to share his knowledge
- 0:19Speaker 1: and provide mentorship from his industry experience with others who
- 0:23Speaker 1: want to develop careers in the music business. This kind
- 0:25Speaker 1: of sounds like money making conversations, which is good because
- 0:28Speaker 1: I'm not saying that that's his idea, my idea, And
- 0:31Speaker 1: we're going to talk about how he's approaching his end
- 0:34Speaker 1: of the business and I'm approaching my end of the business.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And guess what, We're gonna create a lot of winners
- 0:38Speaker 1: on the phone. Please welcome to money making conversation. I
- 0:41Speaker 1: missed him at the ESPN Live broadcast. They told me
- 0:44Speaker 1: he was there and I couldn't get over to see him.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Please welcome, Dana says to Buddy, Hey man, I heard
- 0:52Speaker 1: I missed you. Man, he was at the end. Let
- 0:54Speaker 1: me back up with last a couple of weeks September
- 0:57Speaker 1: twenty it uh steven A. Smith brought es paying first
- 1:00Speaker 1: take to Williamington, Delaware to promote HBCUs College Fair, where
- 1:05Speaker 1: we was encouraging seniors in high school to come to
- 1:10Speaker 1: this HBCU featured event. We had like twenty three colleges
- 1:13Speaker 1: who are confirmed from HBCU. Thirteen of them were registering
- 1:17Speaker 1: students on the spot. In words, if you brought your S,
- 1:20Speaker 1: a T score, a CT score, your transcript, you can register.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So far, they've generated over four million dollars in scholarships
- 1:30Speaker 1: that have been distributed from that college fair. And then
- 1:33Speaker 1: they tell me that you was at the live broadcast. Correct,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I was there. Yeah, I actually live in North Newark, Delaware,
- 1:41Speaker 1: which is no more than six or seven minutes away.
- 1:45Speaker 1: You know, I'm a big I'm a big sports fan,
- 1:47Speaker 1: so I had to definitely come to check out Stephen A. Smith. Well,
- 1:50Speaker 1: I wish I know you know that that's my man,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and so in the future we'll connect that to be
- 1:55Speaker 1: our connection. Because I appreciate you coming there. What was
- 1:58Speaker 1: your take at the lib us what what would your
- 2:00Speaker 1: take away from the experience. I want to make sure
- 2:02Speaker 1: any of everybody who attended really got an HBCU experience
- 2:06Speaker 1: and walked away with a sense of the culture of
- 2:08Speaker 1: the HBCU. What it was definitely definitely, uh, informative and
- 2:14Speaker 1: exciting all at the same time. I actually have a
- 2:18Speaker 1: daughter that Sugerior in UM the University of Delaware UM,
- 2:23Speaker 1: so I I understand what I took away was from
- 2:27Speaker 1: Steven this with you know, going to Western Salem. You
- 2:29Speaker 1: know you basically you know what we're always teach in
- 2:32Speaker 1: our black community. You two can do this. You two
- 2:35Speaker 1: can make this happen. And it was just really great
- 2:39Speaker 1: to see Max and Molly actually show love to him
- 2:43Speaker 1: and you know, praise colleges and on all the surrounding
- 2:47Speaker 1: colleges to let them know that's a black community. You know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: if we put in the work, it definitely can happen.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Is what you put into it. And that's that's that's
- 2:54Speaker 1: the story of your life. Because right now I want
- 2:57Speaker 1: to say, you're on fire. Let me read some things here,
- 2:59Speaker 1: like I've written this article. Gospel hit making producer songwriter
- 3:03Speaker 1: Dana Surrey recently received three GM a Dove Award nomination
- 3:07Speaker 1: for his work with Jason's Nelson and The Answer and
- 3:11Speaker 1: Miranda Curtis and I'm All In. That's just a list
- 3:15Speaker 1: of the Grammy nominations that you've been put up for
- 3:17Speaker 1: when it when it comes surge and that you like that, Dana,
- 3:20Speaker 1: how the how you know because you've been working at
- 3:22Speaker 1: It's not overnight. And we're gonna talk about the journey
- 3:24Speaker 1: a little bit. That's why I like to do in
- 3:25Speaker 1: this show, just talk about the journey a little bit
- 3:27Speaker 1: so people can know that your story can be their story.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But it's a lot of work, a lot of patients,
- 3:32Speaker 1: a lot of nose tied to a lot of yes.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Is that enables to be interviewing you about the success
- 3:38Speaker 1: that you're having right now? Correct? Yes, sir well, I
- 3:41Speaker 1: think the most important part is, like you say, it's
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's the build up. I start up as a musician
- 3:48Speaker 1: and willing run New Jersey and you know, you you
- 3:52Speaker 1: be a musician and you that comes from starting in
- 3:55Speaker 1: church to you know, hoping you can get a gig,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and I hopped on a are a couple of R
- 4:01Speaker 1: and B gigs to start working for Highland Rectors where
- 4:03Speaker 1: we're pretty much just playing for any artists and then
- 4:08Speaker 1: you know, any artists adds. So we we worked from
- 4:11Speaker 1: Drew Hill to Montella Jordan's too. You know to Kelly Price.
- 4:15Speaker 1: You know, so I worked my way from the bottom,
- 4:18Speaker 1: uh from playing strings to pianos to musical directing and
- 4:21Speaker 1: too you know, and then I hopped into the gospel
- 4:24Speaker 1: world and uh with Ty Trivitt and you know, end
- 4:27Speaker 1: up producing on his albums and um, and then that
- 4:31Speaker 1: worked worked worked his way into you know, I just
- 4:34Speaker 1: really got tired of telling you know, imagine man going
- 4:37Speaker 1: on tours. He's going three or four months or on
- 4:41Speaker 1: a time. So these people were like, Okay, if I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: leaving my home for three or four months, I have
- 4:45Speaker 1: to make sure that my wife's trade. Uh my, my,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you tap my job. I'm not gonna be back to
- 4:50Speaker 1: three or four months. And then the artist caused you
- 4:53Speaker 1: when you know your week out and says, hey, you know,
- 4:56Speaker 1: the artist heard his hip. So the tours canceled and
- 4:59Speaker 1: my hip it's fine, Sean, you know over brother, I
- 5:07Speaker 1: was like, how did this happen? And you know, so
- 5:10Speaker 1: I said, man, I've got to find a better way
- 5:13Speaker 1: of doing what I loved and being able to own
- 5:18Speaker 1: situation and and and that you know brought me to
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know what, I need to stay home and figure
- 5:26Speaker 1: out a way of building writing songs, producing songs right
- 5:31Speaker 1: from the circumference of my home and be able to
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know, make some real money. And that's what I
- 5:37Speaker 1: started out to do. I started to just build write
- 5:40Speaker 1: a whole bunch of songs that really probably sucked in
- 5:42Speaker 1: the beginning. But you know, songwriting is like a muscle man.
- 5:45Speaker 1: The more you do it, the more strength will come
- 5:48Speaker 1: to it. And you know, after a while, I started
- 5:51Speaker 1: to you know, pitch my songs to people that are
- 5:52Speaker 1: really respected, and that turned into a Boy's the Men's
- 5:56Speaker 1: placement back in two thousand and that that one song
- 6:01Speaker 1: that I did with Boys the Men end up really uh,
- 6:06Speaker 1: end up on America's Top Model first season. Thirty seconds
- 6:10Speaker 1: of that that song. Rashwan paid me forty four grand
- 6:15Speaker 1: uh and I was only fifty of the work. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I just split on my earnings with Boys the Men.
- 6:21Speaker 1: So that forty four grand man, I built me a
- 6:23Speaker 1: studio room, I got myself some equipment, and I've been
- 6:27Speaker 1: going hard ever since, bro hard to paint. And you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: my cat my catalog has built up and now label
- 6:34Speaker 1: I know, all the labels have relationships with them, and
- 6:36Speaker 1: I get pretty much walk artists into these labels. And
- 6:39Speaker 1: these relationships and get them some really cool record deals
- 6:42Speaker 1: if the artists is ready and capable of making that happen.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Because I still took some work on the artists. Player
- 6:48Speaker 1: also absolutely work on that. It's really interesting because I
- 6:51Speaker 1: we're going to have a long term relationship. I'm gonna
- 6:53Speaker 1: just tell you because your story is so similar my
- 6:55Speaker 1: other very successful stand up comment writing I was. I
- 6:59Speaker 1: was a lot of people always ask me, Wow, why
- 7:02Speaker 1: did you go behind the scenes, Because again, I got
- 7:04Speaker 1: tired of comedy clubs. I got tired of tours inconsistency.
- 7:07Speaker 1: So I became a writer, sitcom writer, and I became
- 7:11Speaker 1: a producer because I can control. It's something about weekly
- 7:15Speaker 1: checks that I liked versus you know what I'm talking about,
- 7:20Speaker 1: versus you know, a check whenever or you go out there. Well,
- 7:23Speaker 1: you know, we thought the two or be three months,
- 7:26Speaker 1: but it's only gonna be a month. Hey, I got
- 7:28Speaker 1: two more extra months of bills that I was because
- 7:32Speaker 1: you didn't know as a talent or this is the
- 7:34Speaker 1: thing about the talent is that once you tell a
- 7:36Speaker 1: talent that the check is coming, that check has spent.
- 7:39Speaker 1: It has been it has been sectioned off into food
- 7:43Speaker 1: into car, every rent, everything. So when you tell me
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's not coming anymore, that's a problem in your life financially,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and it really starts affecting you. So you have to
- 7:52Speaker 1: figure out a new plan. That's why his new plan was, Hey, man,
- 7:55Speaker 1: I'm produced, I'm right, I'm controlled. I'm tired of people
- 7:58Speaker 1: telling me I got date, I got money coming, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: they can change their mind when they feel like it,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but didn't ask me. Didn't ask me about to change.
- 8:04Speaker 1: So when we come back on the next breaking and
- 8:06Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the the program that's very similar
- 8:09Speaker 1: to my Money Making Conversation. I actually turned it into
- 8:11Speaker 1: a podcast. I also started it on social media on
- 8:14Speaker 1: my Facebook page. That's what I'm saying, Man, your values
- 8:17Speaker 1: and your sensibilities are so close to mine that I
- 8:20Speaker 1: hate I missed you, but I know I'm gonna see
- 8:21Speaker 1: in the future. We'll be back with more money making conversations.
- 8:24Speaker 1: My man, he's my double gangerl Hi, This is ra
- 8:27Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. You and you're listening to money Making Conversation
- 8:30Speaker 1: on the phone. Is gonna man. Dana sor Ry. He
- 8:32Speaker 1: created this stay home money movement aside from his Sea
- 8:36Speaker 1: bass entertainment company and his Sea Blake Studios. He believes,
- 8:40Speaker 1: like me, if you use your guard getting talent, the
- 8:43Speaker 1: money will come. That is so true, but us because
- 8:47Speaker 1: it's hard work and consistency and also having the people
- 8:50Speaker 1: around you that help you when you down correct aim, yes, sir,
- 8:56Speaker 1: all day long, I think, Uh the lay point is,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know, creating the space too man to to really
- 9:05Speaker 1: uh be productive, you know what I mean? You know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: with having my my own studio and talking to my
- 9:12Speaker 1: wife into letting me you know, pretty much cut out
- 9:15Speaker 1: my first floor my business. I hadn't go as far
- 9:20Speaker 1: as to you know, man put logos on my door man.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So when I know when I come downstairs, it's business,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Like my wife's the pharmacists
- 9:29Speaker 1: when she goes to Target to do a pharmacy, she's
- 9:32Speaker 1: she she's the Target logo and act it's targets work.
- 9:35Speaker 1: It's time to work for targets. And I come down here,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I see the sea beds logo. It's time of work.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I've got no laundry clothes laying around. I an't got
- 9:43Speaker 1: no you know, basketballs and in my face. But it
- 9:47Speaker 1: is business, it is you know, so it's it's my
- 9:52Speaker 1: mentality in my mindset, and everybody that enters my space knows, hey,
- 9:57Speaker 1: this guy must be serious. He got logos on his doors.
- 10:00Speaker 1: You know it's fresh paint, is you know, commercial doors
- 10:04Speaker 1: and found proofs professionally. So I took my time when
- 10:07Speaker 1: I built the studio to made sure that it looks
- 10:10Speaker 1: like a business, feels like a business, and people walk away,
- 10:14Speaker 1: you know, with having the business. It's really it's really
- 10:17Speaker 1: he's very important. Parents and attitude and approach changes people whole.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I would look on you when you show up. It's
- 10:23Speaker 1: really interesting when I listened to his story because you know,
- 10:25Speaker 1: my wife's uptomatress. His wife's a pharmacists. Okay, he's a
- 10:29Speaker 1: daughter in college. I have adult in college. Okay, I'll
- 10:31Speaker 1: tell you my man here and so my man, I'm
- 10:34Speaker 1: started loving this dude. I'm loving this dude, and so
- 10:37Speaker 1: uh and so so. The interesting thing about money making
- 10:40Speaker 1: conversation In fourteen, when I was still managing Steve Harvey,
- 10:43Speaker 1: a lot of people kept approaching me with Sean, give
- 10:46Speaker 1: me some advice to Rashan, how to handle my money, Rashan,
- 10:48Speaker 1: how you breaking to the industry. So I started money
- 10:51Speaker 1: making conversation on my Facebook page at Rashwan mcdonnald and
- 10:54Speaker 1: so and so. I would give an hour on a
- 10:58Speaker 1: week and that hour, when I learned, was when you
- 11:00Speaker 1: when you respond to somebody, they respond back at you. Okay,
- 11:04Speaker 1: so then you have to respond back to them. They
- 11:05Speaker 1: they're gonna respond right back at So I would do
- 11:07Speaker 1: like four or five exchanges with one person and not
- 11:10Speaker 1: realized this was taking up my time three hours. So
- 11:13Speaker 1: it became more than I thought it would be, other
- 11:16Speaker 1: than just a casual you know, just here you go by,
- 11:19Speaker 1: because it became a mentoring a mentoring process that I
- 11:22Speaker 1: started on my social media page, and eventually it grew
- 11:25Speaker 1: to this format that we have now, which is money
- 11:27Speaker 1: Making Conversation, which is now very popular podcast format. It's
- 11:31Speaker 1: being syndicated nationally. So now you did something similar to
- 11:34Speaker 1: that would stay home money movement. Explain how that started
- 11:38Speaker 1: and what you're doing with it now. Well, I must
- 11:41Speaker 1: confess that the difference between me and you, and it
- 11:45Speaker 1: catches back up with itself, is I was against social media,
- 11:50Speaker 1: to be honest with you, let me tell you why.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I thought. I'm very focused when I make music and
- 11:55Speaker 1: I don't like distractions, you know. So when people with
- 11:58Speaker 1: artists would come in with their phone owns posting and
- 12:01Speaker 1: went and it's a ray and it's you know, I
- 12:03Speaker 1: was like, okay, you know it's time to work. You
- 12:05Speaker 1: know what they put the phone that I'm trying. You know,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I'm the only one writing these songs right now, you
- 12:09Speaker 1: know your post and it was bucking me out, like,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know what, let's let's make this money. So after
- 12:16Speaker 1: a while you let me tell you where it flips over, Shana,
- 12:19Speaker 1: because you make a great point. One of my artist's
- 12:23Speaker 1: brother the labels called me today and say, hey, damn, now,
- 12:25Speaker 1: why don't you really you know, I see you post sometimes.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Why don't you really post anymore? I was like, well,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you know what, I'm working, And it's like, well, do
- 12:32Speaker 1: you know how many people would love to hear behind
- 12:35Speaker 1: the scenes of your process of why you did what
- 12:37Speaker 1: you did? So he just I said, man, I'm really
- 12:39Speaker 1: not and he was like, you just do me a favorite.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Just try it. He said, can you take ten minutes,
- 12:45Speaker 1: uh every week and just talk about how he made
- 12:48Speaker 1: a particular album. And I started doing that and they
- 12:51Speaker 1: wanted me to go live and I don't even really
- 12:53Speaker 1: know much about live, but I started live and I
- 12:57Speaker 1: Rashana started getting all these comments and questions you know
- 13:01Speaker 1: where you know, why don't you do this? How did
- 13:03Speaker 1: you do that? But I was it was cool. I
- 13:05Speaker 1: was like, oh, I really like like these questions. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: someone asked me a major question. They said, why don't
- 13:11Speaker 1: you tour anymore? Like why don't ever see you in
- 13:13Speaker 1: the road anymore? Um? And I said well yeah, said
- 13:16Speaker 1: well I'm about you know, let's stay home money, like
- 13:18Speaker 1: I make more money staying on and everybody started hashtagging
- 13:22Speaker 1: stay home money, Hey, oh money, oh staff, this this
- 13:26Speaker 1: is really touching on, like this is crazy. So I
- 13:28Speaker 1: kept you know, it got a little containious. I can't.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I gotta be honest. I started to really enjoy doing it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: And then a friend called me and said, bro, you
- 13:36Speaker 1: really can make a business out of this because people
- 13:40Speaker 1: really want to learn. And I said, you know what,
- 13:42Speaker 1: let me create a forum that this can help. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: I said, well, I have to add the monthly a
- 13:49Speaker 1: monthly fee to it because I wanted to be as
- 13:51Speaker 1: low as nine dollars a month that people can't get me.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And then I wanted to have the mentorship program where
- 13:56Speaker 1: I actually can walk people through how to make great
- 13:58Speaker 1: records or as many questions about the music business. So
- 14:01Speaker 1: I created tears of the stay home money movement, and
- 14:05Speaker 1: the money goes to me doing clinics and um trying
- 14:09Speaker 1: a little bit more to actually teach on it at
- 14:11Speaker 1: different churches or different clinics and workshops. And I'm working.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Actually in two thousands twenty, I might have my own clinic.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Is gonna be absolutely crazy, and I'm gonna rent a
- 14:21Speaker 1: big home. So because the stay home money movement, we're
- 14:24Speaker 1: gonna be in a big old house and I'm gonna
- 14:26Speaker 1: be teaching, teaching an intimate and I'm launching all that
- 14:31Speaker 1: in two thousand twenties. So it's going to be really crazy,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and I'm gonna bring you my friends and to record exacts.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna fly these people in and we're gonna bust
- 14:39Speaker 1: it up real Intimately. It's gonna feel very organic living
- 14:43Speaker 1: room setting. We eat together, we laugh together, and then
- 14:45Speaker 1: at the end of the days will make some music together.
- 14:48Speaker 1: That's awesome. That is so so money making conversations. Yes,
- 14:54Speaker 1: it's beautiful when I hear the articulated, because it was
- 14:58Speaker 1: interesting because when I started, because my right now it's
- 15:01Speaker 1: a complimentary because I I was charging through fifty and
- 15:05Speaker 1: then my and they signed up. They it was ridiculous,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and I told my staff stop, stop, stopped. I said,
- 15:11Speaker 1: I don't have time to do anything else but to
- 15:13Speaker 1: talk to people. I said, let me just keep this
- 15:16Speaker 1: format where it is until I can figure out where
- 15:18Speaker 1: my life needs to be so I can make time
- 15:20Speaker 1: to do to handle these requests. So I hear what
- 15:23Speaker 1: you're doing is beautiful, so I know that is money
- 15:27Speaker 1: to be made, but also a function of being able
- 15:29Speaker 1: to deliver information because people need it. And the reason
- 15:32Speaker 1: I like what you're doing because you you know me
- 15:36Speaker 1: when I say this, which is true. I hate people
- 15:38Speaker 1: out there selling stuff, telling people that can do stuff
- 15:42Speaker 1: but don't have the resume. They're all hype, they have
- 15:46Speaker 1: not accomplished anything. And it's thousands of them out there
- 15:50Speaker 1: talking about how they can make you successful, how they
- 15:53Speaker 1: can get you on TV, how they can get your
- 15:55Speaker 1: song published, how they can teach you how to write
- 15:59Speaker 1: a script, how did you tell you how to manage people?
- 16:03Speaker 1: And they have no resume to to back that up,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but they're out there. So when I see something somebody
- 16:08Speaker 1: like you, it is a breath of fresh air because
- 16:11Speaker 1: you are the truth. And guess what more people need
- 16:14Speaker 1: to be talking to the truth than having conversations with
- 16:17Speaker 1: the life. Yeah, bro, you know, I was reading the
- 16:21Speaker 1: scripture today and it's it said you know tightest too,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and they basically say, when you teach, teach truth because
- 16:28Speaker 1: if you teach truth, it would never be able to
- 16:31Speaker 1: be criticized. And I really took that as man. You know,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I'm just gonna tell my story. I no one can
- 16:36Speaker 1: tell my story better than I can tell my story.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And I'm encouraging my friends and peers and colleagues to
- 16:42Speaker 1: come and tell their stories because man, a story and
- 16:46Speaker 1: a testimony can change someone's life. I understand that. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: with the stay home money movement, the reoccurring theme Sean
- 16:53Speaker 1: is some some people just may not have the characteristic,
- 16:59Speaker 1: characteristic or the career as much to speak up like
- 17:01Speaker 1: I do. So I tell these people you if you
