- 0:00India's economy grew more than 8% over the last year.
- 0:03This makes it the fastest growing major economy in the
- 0:06world, even after a rougher than expected election.
- 0:09So where did this growth come from?
- 0:11Investors are asking questions like is this sustainable?
- 0:14And what does the investment window for India look like?
- 0:18We're going to break it all down for you right
- 0:20here on UBS Trending.
- 0:32Hi, everyone, and welcome to UBS Trending.
- 0:34I'm Anthony Pastore.
- 0:35Thank you for being with us.
- 0:36My guest today is Yoojeong Oh.
- 0:38She is an investment director on the Asian equities team
- 0:40at Aberdeen.
- 0:41Yu Jung, nice to have you join me on the
- 0:43program.
- 0:43Great to see you.
- 0:45Thank you very much.
- 0:46Hello.
- 0:47So you, John, you know, the, the story from from
- 0:50India, it's, it's been a really interesting one and it's
- 0:53been fascinating to watch the country grow and change over
- 0:57the past several years.
- 0:59So just from a very macro perspective, what do you
- 1:01see as the forces behind these changes that are happening
- 1:04there?
- 1:06Yeah, you're right.
- 1:07And I think investing in any emerging market is really
- 1:10always a balancing act between that promise of growth and
- 1:14the known unknowns of the volatilities of that emerging markets.
- 1:18And I think India, as you say, has really been
- 1:22a great market for the past couple of years.
- 1:25And that's really largely thanks to three drivers in our
- 1:28opinion.
- 1:29Firstly, really that rapid growth of the middle class consumer
- 1:33in India.
- 1:34So not only has India overtaken China to have the
- 1:37largest population in the world, but the dollar value of
- 1:41consumption spending is also increasing and India's forecast to become
- 1:45the third largest consumer globally and before the end of
- 1:49this decade, third only to the US and China.
- 1:53I think secondly, there's been very supportive government policies as
- 1:57well that's really ushered in an era of capital and
- 1:59infrastructure investment.
- 2:01And that's really helped the Indian economy to really benefit
- 2:05at the moment from several years of painful reforms that
- 2:09it's had to go through.
- 2:11And it's also benefiting from that global offshoring trend that
- 2:14has come at the same time as well.
- 2:17And I think lastly, India has been a great investor
- 2:20in digitalization and that energy transition story as well.
- 2:24So India's digital stack has created this single open software
- 2:29platform for India, consumers and businesses.
- 2:32And again, I think that sets a great sort of
- 2:35scene for companies to really try and build their businesses
- 2:38out into the future.
- 2:40Yeah.
- 2:40And, and if you look at the, let's kind of
- 2:42take it now from the ground up and looking at
- 2:44the citizens who are living in India, clearly we, as
- 2:47you said, the government has truly invested in technology infrastructure,
- 2:50you know, all the things that on paper add to
- 2:53a better standard of living.
- 2:54So has have the citizens really seen that?
- 2:57Is that something that you can see on the ground?
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:00So I think if we stick with this digital stack
- 3:03as an example, then that was a government LED initiative
- 3:07to create this digital sort of open platform to support
- 3:10India's future needs.
- 3:12I mean, I think that was a very good forward
- 3:14thinking initiative that India put in place.
- 3:16It started with Adha, which was their national digital identification
- 3:20process, which has been rolled out to over a billion
- 3:24people in the space of just two or three years.
- 3:27Whereas if you look at some of the more developed
- 3:29countries in the world, we're still struggling to get our
- 3:32E passports rolled out to our full populations which are
- 3:35nowhere near as big as the size of Indias population.
- 3:38But having that digital ID system has really helped them
- 3:42to allow processing of online payments to help with digital
- 3:46banking, improves data availability.
- 3:49And going forwards, they're going to build on that with
- 3:51health services as well.
- 3:52So in a couple of years time, a patient in
- 3:55India can have their medical records transfer with them to
- 3:59any hospital they go to in India, once their hospital
- 4:02records are linked to their ad hoc ID as well.
- 4:05So I think all of these things are really helping
- 4:08Indian citizens to benefit from that digitalization trend as well.
- 4:13I also think if you travel to India simply as
- 4:15a tourist as well, but obviously this affects the citizens
- 4:18on the ground as well.
- 4:19But infrastructure that's been such a big change in India
- 4:22over the past decade.
- 4:24Me, like if I think about the last time I
- 4:27went to the Taj Mahal, that journey was a six
- 4:29hour journey on on on on this road that was
- 4:32full of cars and and animal traffic as well.
- 4:35But I went earlier this year and it's become a
- 4:38super sort of six lane highway that allowed me to
- 4:41get to the Taj Mahal in just under three hours.
- 4:44So I think all the support and, and, and the
- 4:47planning to get that that sort of infrastructure in place
- 4:50is again, helping Indian citizens to go about their daily
- 4:54needs better as well.
- 4:56The day I visited Taj Mahal actually earlier in the
- 4:59year was the opening of the new metro station at
- 5:02the Taj as well.
- 5:04So I think that continued investment into allowing ease of
- 5:08mobility is really going to benefit the citizens too.
- 5:13Yeah.
- 5:13And, you know, and from somebody who sits all the
- 5:15way here in New York, on the other side of
- 5:17the planet, it feels like everything was happening almost overnight.
- 5:20You know, one day it was, as you said, six
- 5:22hours to go anywhere and the next there are metro
- 5:24stations and all these modern ways of being transported around
- 5:28a very large country.
- 5:29But on the on the on the spending side, did
- 5:31the government use a lot of leverage when they were
- 5:34investing in the economy?
- 5:35Where did the where did the funding come from?
- 5:38Yes.
- 5:38And actually India has relatively low debt to GP, debt
- 5:43to GDP.
- 5:44And I think keeping credit costs low is again very
- 5:47important to this government as well.
- 5:49And actually that's something that will link into some of
- 5:52the service offerings that the digital stack can provide in
- 5:55future to at with such a growth economy.
- 5:58I think funding for some of these infrastructure projects has
- 6:01come from private investors.
- 6:03The private equity market in India is still very active
- 6:07as well and I think that provides good funding source
- 6:10for the economy.
- 6:11So India has hasn't had to over leverage itself as
- 6:14some of its other emerging market peers have done in
- 6:17the past.
- 6:18I also think there's a very strong banking sector within
- 6:22India and that's also helping to fund businesses much more
- 6:26at the grassroots level.
- 6:28So perhaps not for the large infrastructure projects that tend
- 6:30to attract a lot of foreign investors.
- 6:33But if you're an Indian business, and I think there's
- 6:36a lot of new creative businesses coming up in India
- 6:39to serve a new demand as well, then then these
- 6:42companies are benefiting from that strength of the financial system
- 6:45in India as well.
- 6:47Great.
- 6:47Thank you.
- 6:47You junk.
- 6:48So interesting.
- 6:49You know when we talk about India, our chief investment
- 6:51office here, our emerging markets team does actually think that
- 6:55it's likely the country is likely to remain well supported
- 6:58because of that resilient macroeconomic backdrop.
- 7:00And they also expect further upside in Indian equities and
- 7:03bonds through the through the rest of the year.
- 7:06But in your opinion, when you look at the bigger
- 7:09picture, has the investment opportunity played itself out or are
- 7:13there more opportunities ahead?
- 7:17Yeah.
- 7:17So I think it's a bit of a mixed bag.
- 7:19And I think the only way for you to really
- 7:21know whether there are still opportunities left to invest in
- 7:25is to have that regular interaction with Indian corporates, to
- 7:28be able to travel there, to be able to gather
- 7:31your own information on the ground.
- 7:33And and that's really one of the strengths of having
- 7:36a team that can access the Indian market.
- 7:38It's obviously much more easy to travel there from Singapore
- 7:41than it would be from the US.
- 7:43So I think understanding that there are quality names that
- 7:46have been investor favourites over the last decade that have
- 7:50helped India grow over the last decade, and also understanding
- 7:53what those same businesses are doing to make sure that
- 7:56they are still winners for the next decade.
- 7:59And then also having your eyes on that collection of
- 8:02impressive new businesses that we alluded to before.
- 8:05These are new sort of business teams and more nimble.
- 8:08The management teams have all been educated overseas or at
- 8:12the best universities in India as well.
- 8:14And these companies are really looking to challenge that status
- 8:18quo that the incumbents have enjoyed so far.
- 8:20So they're creating demand rather than just looking to follow
- 8:23it.
- 8:24So I think really having your eyes on these types
- 8:26of opportunities, having your eyes on what's coming up through
- 8:29the private equity market as well.
- 8:31These are all good ways to keep finding new investment
- 8:35opportunities and for those are willing to do the groundwork.
- 8:38And, and I really emphasize that, I think one of
- 8:41the reasons we make it a point to travel to
- 8:44India so often and to meet with as many decision
- 8:46makers and business leaders as possible.
- 8:50That's really one of the big benefits of being able
- 8:52to collect information and make your decisions based on that
- 8:55data.
- 8:56Excellent.
- 8:56Thank you, Yujong.
- 8:57And you know, as we're getting towards the end of
- 8:59our conversation, of course, there's always the flip side of
- 9:01the risk, right?
- 9:02There's a risk in any investment and given that there's
- 9:05so much unknown on the horizon, even when you think
- 9:07back to what's happening here in the US, Donald Trump,
- 9:10if he gets re elected, has promised tariffs on China,
- 9:13first of all, and he hasn't said anything about India.
- 9:16But is there any risk to additional tariffs put on
- 9:19countries outside of the US?
- 9:21Are there any other risks that you're looking out for
- 9:23when it comes to investing in India?
- 9:27Yes, of course, there are always risks of of this
- 9:30nature.
- 9:30And I think that the US election later in the
- 9:33year as is a big focal watch point for all
- 9:36investors, not just in Asia, but probably globally as well.
- 9:39But there is a big link to the US to
- 9:41a lot of the trade economies here in Asia.
- 9:44And I think so far for the Indian markets, they
- 9:47have been an indirect beneficiary of some of the orders
- 9:50that have come out, executive orders that have come out
- 9:53from the US over the past couple of years.
- 9:56So we mentioned that a global offshoring diversification trade and
- 10:01that certainly helped the Indian manufacturing services companies to benefit
- 10:06from the increasing need of global companies to diversify their
- 10:11supply chains.
- 10:12I think one of the other very common questions that
- 10:15I'm asked from investors is really whether the Indian market
- 10:19has already priced in everything good that's that it's got
- 10:22going for it or there's still more to go.
- 10:25And I think the strength in that domestic economy has
- 10:28left the Indian market looking fairly stretched in terms of
- 10:32valuations if you're looking at price to earnings multiple in
- 10:36particular.
- 10:37But there are still some parts particularly, you know in
- 10:40the small cap and mid cap company space where valuations
- 10:44do look very, very expensive indeed.
- 10:47I think what we try and again stress to our
- 10:50investors is that there's no denying that valuations have run.
- 10:54Indian markets have hit a record highs this year, but
- 10:57there is an inherent strength to the economy in India
- 11:00and they've still got that high single digit GDP growth
- 11:04that you mentioned at the start of the program.
- 11:07And we're expecting corporate earnings growth to be around around
- 11:10the 1012% mark as well.
- 11:11So I think that structural growth story is still intact
- 11:15and that supports what looks at first glance like perhaps
- 11:18overly stretched valuations.
- 11:20So we are still committed to investing in India.
- 11:23And I think if you find the right companies with
- 11:26the right level of growth and with the right type
- 11:28of business model that can succeed over the next decade
- 11:31as well.
- 11:32And then it's still a very interesting country to be
- 11:34invested in.
- 11:35Absolutely.
- 11:35Thank you, Yujiang.
- 11:36And by the way, your view at Aberdeen is very
- 11:38similar to the view here in CIO, where are we
- 11:41expect the Indian stock market's valuation to remain elevated and
- 11:44as you said, expect mid to high single digit returns
- 11:47in the second-half.
- 11:48So thanks for joining us, you Jung, great to have
- 11:50you on the show.
- 11:51And it's, it is a really fascinating and and, and,
- 11:54and interesting conversation to talk about India, especially as far
- 11:57as it's come over the last, you know, decade or
- 12:00so.
- 12:00So great to have you.
- 12:01Thanks for being here.
- 12:03Thank you very much.
