- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest. She's on the phone. I'm very happy.
- 0:02Speaker 1: We joked around a little bit before we got on
- 0:04Speaker 1: the air. She's from the Bronx to Broadway beyond. She's
- 0:08Speaker 1: traveled to over fifty countries throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, North
- 0:15Speaker 1: America and the Caribbean, sharing her amazing singing gift. Now,
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm gona tell you right now, I can't sing, so
- 0:20Speaker 1: you know right there, you know we won't be sharing
- 0:22Speaker 1: any duets on this show. I can tell you right now.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Her success has landed her in the national media by
- 0:27Speaker 1: a lot, with television appearances on Oprah, TBN and anymore.
- 0:31Speaker 1: She would co star and highly anticipated Broadway musical Girl
- 0:34Speaker 1: from the North Country, which is inspired by and features
- 0:37Speaker 1: the music of my man Bob Dylan. The play begins
- 0:41Speaker 1: previews on February seven at the Belasco Theater in New
- 0:45Speaker 1: York City. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation, Jeannette Byrdal. Hello,
- 0:51Speaker 1: how will you thank you so much for happening me today?
- 0:54Speaker 1: First of all, did my intro hit your status? Did?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Did I get you there? Jeanette? Did I hit? Did
- 0:59Speaker 1: I lay you out right? Why? I need to make right?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Thank you? I appreciate this well, you know, because first
- 1:06Speaker 1: of all, you know I'm going through your bio, and
- 1:08Speaker 1: first of all, you know all my guests, uh, I
- 1:10Speaker 1: consider you a neglected guest because of the fact that
- 1:12Speaker 1: your world like you know, you know, you know, I
- 1:15Speaker 1: can't pigeonhold you. You know, you your singer. You travel
- 1:18Speaker 1: around the world. You performed for dignitaries like the Obama's
- 1:23Speaker 1: you know, ministers like Bishop T. D. Jake's and so
- 1:27Speaker 1: you know, you know, interviewed and performed in front of Oprah.
- 1:30Speaker 1: This is a high level of of a entertainment and
- 1:34Speaker 1: performance level. What drives you? That would be my first
- 1:37Speaker 1: question just start off interviews. What drives you at this
- 1:41Speaker 1: point in your lives. It's two level, it's two level.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Let me let me, let me step back because I've
- 1:45Speaker 1: never asked that question before. What drove you too in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the beginning? And what drives you now? Okay? UM, what
- 1:52Speaker 1: you old me in the beginning is I had a
- 1:54Speaker 1: passion um, a passion for singing, and UM a passion
- 1:58Speaker 1: to the entertain So at a young age I started singing.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I grew up in the Bronx, and UM I went
- 2:05Speaker 1: to high school performing arts. Now ironically. You know, I
- 2:09Speaker 1: could sing, I could always sing, but when I was
- 2:11Speaker 1: coming up, I wanted to like wrap. I wanted to
- 2:15Speaker 1: be a rapper. That was my thing. The first of all.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I can you wrap though, maybe rap? Maybe because you
- 2:22Speaker 1: could wrap put you back to singing. No, I could
- 2:25Speaker 1: definitely wrap. Definitely. I thought I was gonna be like
- 2:28Speaker 1: the next empty light, you know, the next clean light
- 2:32Speaker 1: to you for away to me. I might be aging myself.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But you know, because I was young when I was
- 2:36Speaker 1: listening to them, and I felt like, you know, that's
- 2:39Speaker 1: that's what I wanted to do. So through in high
- 2:41Speaker 1: school I was rapping. And when I got to the
- 2:43Speaker 1: mcguarity has to the Performing Arts, I was still wrapping.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But then I was surrounded by a bunch of people
- 2:48Speaker 1: who were just really talented. They could sing, they could dance,
- 2:52Speaker 1: they can act. And it's there that I caught the
- 2:55Speaker 1: Broadway bugs because Broadway wasn't even in my mind at all.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's not something that I grew up with or anything
- 3:02Speaker 1: but class audition crap at the body. It was an
- 3:07Speaker 1: the left of Um spoke night. Once I took that class,
- 3:10Speaker 1: they showed us how to get chars and we had
- 3:12Speaker 1: to like one of our assignments was to go on
- 3:14Speaker 1: the audition. We they say, showed us how to use
- 3:17Speaker 1: this magazine. It was Backstage magazine. It was like the
- 3:19Speaker 1: Hall copy at the time, and they were like, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: find an audition going on it and I did it,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and I actually booked what I went on, and after
- 3:26Speaker 1: that it was like, oh goad, I just loved theater, right,
- 3:29Speaker 1: So that's how I started. Then I just I stayed
- 3:32Speaker 1: um passionate and I just pursued it. I mean, well,
- 3:35Speaker 1: there's a story in between that fence. I said, the
- 3:39Speaker 1: backlists and health science because it was like that was
- 3:41Speaker 1: my backup plan, just in case things didn't work out.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And thank god, I never needed my backup plan because
- 3:46Speaker 1: after I graduated, I worked in corporate America for like
- 3:48Speaker 1: six months and then I ended up thing and singing
- 3:52Speaker 1: full time, you know, because you know, my backup plan
- 3:55Speaker 1: was I got a degree in mathematics, worked for IBM,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and no, you know, so I don't even think it's
- 4:01Speaker 1: a backup player. I think that that's you know, people
- 4:03Speaker 1: in life till they kind of like push you in
- 4:05Speaker 1: the direction where they understand, you know, so you don't
- 4:08Speaker 1: understand singers then't understand actors, they understand comedians, they understand Hey,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know, go eight to five for the hours a week,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you go to college, you get a job, and that's
- 4:18Speaker 1: what you did. That's what I like, But that wasn't
- 4:20Speaker 1: your passion, that wasn't what you excited you that. You know,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you go to work and you see people really kind
- 4:25Speaker 1: of like going through the motions and most of them
- 4:27Speaker 1: complaining about where they're at and not really excited about
- 4:30Speaker 1: the next step. And I always felt that if I
- 4:32Speaker 1: could see what's gonna happen tomorrow in my life, then
- 4:36Speaker 1: that's not the job I wanted to do. And so
- 4:39Speaker 1: when I would go to work and there's nothing negative
- 4:41Speaker 1: where I work, great people, but I knew what I
- 4:44Speaker 1: was gonna do tomorrow, I knew what I was gonna
- 4:45Speaker 1: do next week. That was not the future for me.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I needed that. I needed to work in an environment
- 4:51Speaker 1: career where I didn't know. I didn't I knew there
- 4:54Speaker 1: was a great opportunity to that, but I didn't know
- 4:57Speaker 1: to the mean I had to work real hard. And
- 4:59Speaker 1: I think the same drive that's inside you as well. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's it's funny because one thing I'm happy about. I
- 5:08Speaker 1: feel like my college experience definitely prepared me for the
- 5:11Speaker 1: industry because I would tell you, as an actress, you're
- 5:14Speaker 1: always in school. Guess you know why you have to
- 5:16Speaker 1: be so disciplined because you're always learning lines, you're always
- 5:19Speaker 1: doing the research. It's like college never ended. But I'm
- 5:24Speaker 1: happy that I had to. I have that discipline because
- 5:26Speaker 1: it's not it's not easy. My family and friends are
- 5:29Speaker 1: always like, how do you even metalize this stuff? Like
- 5:32Speaker 1: how are you doing this research? And like, and I'm
- 5:34Speaker 1: also a writer. I wrote a um um, I wrote
- 5:37Speaker 1: a musical in Tide with Sheetah that ran off Broadway.
- 5:40Speaker 1: We traveled about the world. We just got back on
- 5:42Speaker 1: London a month ago. We were there for five weeks.
- 5:46Speaker 1: We did thirty nine shows. But um, even with my
- 5:49Speaker 1: process in writing that musical, people are always like, how
- 5:51Speaker 1: did you do with the research and the And I'm like, oh, yeah, well,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know, I feel like if you went to college,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you can you can do this stuff. It's research, take time,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and take discipline, and I have all those things and
- 6:03Speaker 1: that definitely helps us my competitions. Janette, you really, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you really because you're gifted. Let's go first, of all,
- 6:10Speaker 1: say that true enough, and do your discipline. Let's say
- 6:13Speaker 1: that too, because I always tell people that in order
- 6:15Speaker 1: to be successful, you have to be consistent, you have
- 6:18Speaker 1: to be disciplined, and you have to be fearless. You
- 6:20Speaker 1: just casually win. You know. It started off Broadway and
- 6:23Speaker 1: then they went to London. Okay, come stop, you know, yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 1: people just try to get off Broadway. Now you're in
- 6:31Speaker 1: London at the same time, ran five weeks over there. Congratulations, congratulations,
- 6:36Speaker 1: thank you, And it was it was it was pretty amazing.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And the reception that we got in London. And the
- 6:42Speaker 1: other thing is that our producers the um we did
- 6:48Speaker 1: something that was very smart. We did well, they did
- 6:51Speaker 1: something that was very smart. Um. We actually recorded it
- 6:55Speaker 1: for film for TV and it's amazing and it's just
- 7:01Speaker 1: it's it's there's nothing like it. And I were really
- 7:04Speaker 1: excited about it. And I'm just excited that it was captured.
- 7:07Speaker 1: What we did in London was captives and not the
- 7:09Speaker 1: world can see it and have aspects to it. It's
- 7:13Speaker 1: only be a matter of time. You have Prime out there, Amazon,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know all these days. Oh yeah, yeah, I'm so
- 7:19Speaker 1: excited for the future of that show. Um, and I'm
- 7:22Speaker 1: also excited about what's happening to with Girl from the
- 7:24Speaker 1: North Country. You. I got a chance to spend forty
- 7:31Speaker 1: minutes with I'm Dealing and it was amazing. He was
- 7:35Speaker 1: so he was so um appreciative of the work that
- 7:40Speaker 1: we've done on stage, um of the work that I
- 7:42Speaker 1: did in my character. In the song that I saying,
- 7:44Speaker 1: he complimented the song and I was like, he's like,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you know, I think the song for true Love. He's like,
- 7:49Speaker 1: you know, true Love is that song is really good.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, you know, that's the song I'm saying.
- 7:53Speaker 1: He's like, yes, I know, I know. But he's just
- 7:57Speaker 1: so wonderful. And it's sometimes you hear about these legends
- 8:00Speaker 1: and you think that like, oh, they're not gonna be
- 8:02Speaker 1: sunnily if they're gonna be strange. He was just just
- 8:06Speaker 1: just great, amazing down the earth, and I felt like
- 8:08Speaker 1: I could talk to him all day. Well, it's really
- 8:11Speaker 1: interesting because it's you know, well you first of all,
- 8:13Speaker 1: you you're talking to history. That's that's that's the amazing
- 8:16Speaker 1: part of the conversation. I know when I met Elton
- 8:18Speaker 1: John and then just just being in the presence of
- 8:21Speaker 1: Muhammad ali Uh. You know you want to you want
- 8:26Speaker 1: to be able to ask so many questions because they've
- 8:29Speaker 1: been through so many different steps and the courageous steps
- 8:32Speaker 1: in their lives, you know, because you know every journey,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I would say, every decade holds a different journey for
- 8:38Speaker 1: each individual. And so they've lived so many decades. And
- 8:41Speaker 1: so when you meet the person like Bob Dylan, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: you know, wow talking about the sixties, Okay, come you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and and and and go through that. Did you ask
- 8:50Speaker 1: him any question or just just experienced the moment with
- 8:53Speaker 1: him and accepted the compliment? How was it? It was
- 8:57Speaker 1: so interesting. It was at his concert and and Um
- 9:01Speaker 1: one of the other stars of Girl from the North
- 9:02Speaker 1: Country man winning him, who is amazing in the show.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It was the two of us that were with him
- 9:08Speaker 1: in his dressing room. And I have to tell you
- 9:12Speaker 1: first it was it was for real, and I was
- 9:14Speaker 1: trying to take in every moment. And it's funny because
- 9:17Speaker 1: I felt like everything that came out of my mom
- 9:19Speaker 1: is just like insignificant, because I was just so like
- 9:25Speaker 1: I was trying to take in every moment. What's the moment?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Like what he was saying, you know, and I did.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I asked a couple of questions about um, about the
- 9:34Speaker 1: songs that he wrote, like, um, there's a song that
- 9:36Speaker 1: I've seen called um um um Gypsy. I mean asked
- 9:43Speaker 1: to see the Gypsy. Okay, I can't think of the
- 9:45Speaker 1: song right now, but February seven the previous start, so
- 9:50Speaker 1: you will be on phorm by that not just tell
- 9:52Speaker 1: us basically girl from the North Country. What exactly is
- 9:55Speaker 1: that Girl from the North Country. Well, that's one of
- 9:59Speaker 1: the songs that he wrote the musicals and titled Girl
- 10:02Speaker 1: from the Norther Country. So this me this music, guest,
- 10:04Speaker 1: the music is based on Bob Dylan. Um, the music
- 10:08Speaker 1: is from Bob Dylan, but the story is not Bob
- 10:10Speaker 1: Dylan's story. It takes place in his hometown. But it
- 10:14Speaker 1: was written by one of the best play rights, um
- 10:16Speaker 1: e Conomic Fearsen. And what he did was he wrote
- 10:20Speaker 1: a play and the music compliments the play. The music
- 10:24Speaker 1: is like a soundtrack to the play. So it's almost
- 10:28Speaker 1: like watching the movie. So the music is not driving,
- 10:31Speaker 1: it's not it's not moving before the stories forwards, but
- 10:35Speaker 1: it's given you the emotions of the character. You know.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It's different in that sense, like most Juice Box musicals
- 10:42Speaker 1: the songs. They try to make the songs part of
- 10:45Speaker 1: the story and have the songs tell the story. But
- 10:48Speaker 1: that's not the case here. It's it's it's like watching
- 10:52Speaker 1: the movie and then you hear the songs that come
- 10:53Speaker 1: on that compliment the scenes and the um emotions of
- 10:57Speaker 1: the character. Amazing. I'm talking to Jeannette by a dell correct,
- 11:02Speaker 1: by your dell right, I'm still rolling with I'm still
- 11:06Speaker 1: rocking with that name. So she is. She's co starring
- 11:09Speaker 1: in highly anticipated Broadway musical Girl from the North Country,
- 11:12Speaker 1: which is inspired by and features the music of Bob Dylan.
- 11:16Speaker 1: To play begins previews February seventh. February is my birthday.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Months or you may see me Jette and not not
- 11:23Speaker 1: made you know, be at the Bilasco Theater in New
- 11:27Speaker 1: York City. It's amazing, Uh, continuous interview because guess what
- 11:31Speaker 1: your your story? You have a relatable I guess a
- 11:35Speaker 1: physical tragedy that you were able to have come. I
- 11:37Speaker 1: have one that happened in my life. It kind of
- 11:39Speaker 1: like changed my whole perspective. Happened to me in nineteen
- 11:42Speaker 1: ninety with my long collapse and I wanna talk about
- 11:44Speaker 1: your experience that you had in two thousand and eight,
- 11:46Speaker 1: because I know it calls me to set the date
- 11:50Speaker 1: in my life October nine, nineteen one. Decided I was
- 11:54Speaker 1: gonna take advantage of all the talents that God gave
- 11:56Speaker 1: me and pursue it. And it's not failed me that mandate.
- 11:59Speaker 1: We when will be back with more from Jeanette, the
- 12:03Speaker 1: star of the new series a new Broadway musical, Girl
- 12:06Speaker 1: from the North Country. Yes, this with Sean McDonald speaking
- 12:09Speaker 1: to Jeanette. By your doul by your del uh. She's
- 12:12Speaker 1: co starring in the Broadway musical Girl from the North Country.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It's a musical that she told us it's not so
- 12:18Speaker 1: much tied to the life of Bob Dealer, but the
- 12:20Speaker 1: music of Bob Dealer, which I think is important. So
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know what you're walking into. Um, Jeanette, thank you
- 12:25Speaker 1: for coming on my show, Money Making Conversation. How are
- 12:27Speaker 1: you doing? I'm doing good. Thank you so much for
- 12:30Speaker 1: having me. This has been wonderful. Well. First of all,
- 12:32Speaker 1: your your double ACP Image Award winning. Whenever you're an award,
- 12:36Speaker 1: it really is as a as a testament to be
- 12:40Speaker 1: recognized by your peers. How does that does it impact you?
- 12:44Speaker 1: How did you do? Do you do? You do? You
- 12:46Speaker 1: take that moment? So here I got it, put it
- 12:48Speaker 1: on the shelf. Now I need more? Or how does
- 12:50Speaker 1: that know? How do you as? First of all, it
- 12:53Speaker 1: was an honor for me to play the role of
- 12:54Speaker 1: Steely on Broadway. I got the CP Theater Award for that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Um well, I did Brawway and then I did the
- 13:01Speaker 1: tour that was a color purple right, the color purple. Yes.
- 13:04Speaker 1: First of all, playing a role like that, it's just
- 13:06Speaker 1: it's just an honor and it's so iconic, and I'm
- 13:09Speaker 1: just happy to follow the Whoopie Goldberg and just thick
- 13:13Speaker 1: the fingers out that just thick the fingers out there,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you know, do you know what you can do for me?
- 13:18Speaker 1: You know? We just like it was one of you know,
- 13:23Speaker 1: it was one of my favorite movies. So to the
- 13:25Speaker 1: honor and to be recognized for the work that I've done,
- 13:28Speaker 1: it's just and by my people, it's very special to me.
- 13:33Speaker 1: It's a very special because you're when I'm looking at
- 13:35Speaker 1: these these Broadway shows are very the very general market
- 13:40Speaker 1: and not not urban in tone. So to go do
- 13:43Speaker 1: the color purple get recognized that really really hits home
- 13:47Speaker 1: to you because you do want everybody wants that you.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You don't want to be pigeonholed that you only do urban.
- 13:52Speaker 1: You know, you only do this pop or R and B.
- 13:56Speaker 1: That you have the ability and you've shown reading your
- 13:59Speaker 1: bio that you have the ability to perform at so
- 14:01Speaker 1: many of different levels. Plus the fact you've traveled all
- 14:04Speaker 1: over this world singing. Yes, it's an honor. And I'll
- 14:08Speaker 1: tell you it's interesting because because I do a lot
- 14:11Speaker 1: of like Broadway shows, theatrical productions, it's really not the
- 14:17Speaker 1: demographic is not. It has a specific demographic, let's just sex.
- 14:23Speaker 1: So to be able to be recognized and to be
- 14:26Speaker 1: seen in front of my people, it's as honor because
- 14:31Speaker 1: that's my dream, is just to bring more theater and
- 14:35Speaker 1: and and talk about subjects that that are relatable, you
- 14:40Speaker 1: know what I mean, because a lot of times these
- 14:41Speaker 1: subjects are just like we can't necessarily relate to them,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and it's not it's just not our face. And you
- 14:48Speaker 1: know the thought of us buying the ticket mawenty times
- 14:51Speaker 1: to see something that we've seen already, we're like, that's
- 14:53Speaker 1: a third. But that's kind of how Broadway goes. You know,
- 14:55Speaker 1: people come from all around the world and they see
- 14:57Speaker 1: these shows over and over and over and over again.
- 15:00Speaker 1: But we're like I saw that one time. I don't
- 15:01Speaker 1: need to see that again because they're not our stories.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Let me ask you this because we're talking about we
- 15:07Speaker 1: talked about scripts a little bit earlier, talking about memorizing.
- 15:11Speaker 1: You know, I see people like Samuel Jackson, this guy's
- 15:14Speaker 1: on the movies. You know, one year coming, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: so no, in each in, each character is different and
- 15:21Speaker 1: just the this is an original question to me in
- 15:23Speaker 1: hearing you and you you travel the world, so you
- 15:26Speaker 1: you know, your articulation has to be at a certain level,
- 15:28Speaker 1: so it can be so it could be communicated to
- 15:31Speaker 1: so many different people and understanding and being able to
- 15:34Speaker 1: how do you go about memorizing the scripts that that
- 15:37Speaker 1: you are auditioning for and also the roles that you
- 15:40Speaker 1: have secured. Okay, so memorizing memorizing seems hard, but when
- 15:45Speaker 1: you have a system that can be easy. Um, there's
- 15:50Speaker 1: always a When you learn that system, you on the role. Now,
- 15:57Speaker 1: Represition is important and and also writing stuff down. So
- 16:02Speaker 1: like if you write something down, like I say, say,
- 16:05Speaker 1: I have to memorize like six pages. I'm gonna write
- 16:08Speaker 1: out those six pages three times. Don't don't remember, right,
- 16:12Speaker 1: We'll read through the script. And then I started writing
- 16:15Speaker 1: out my lines like a once, a little just three times.
- 16:18Speaker 1: And then once I do that, for whatever reason, it
- 16:20Speaker 1: kind of gets inside of you and then it makes
- 16:23Speaker 1: trying to memorize it easier. But it's all about repetition
- 16:27Speaker 1: and just do and it has to be concentrated work.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Like literally, when it's when I'm really like getting down
- 16:32Speaker 1: to memorize in I'm like, okay, let me give my
- 16:34Speaker 1: stuff at least one hour of concentrated work, which means
- 16:37Speaker 1: no phone, no distractions, and you just focus on That
- 16:43Speaker 1: Definitely happens because your boy be struggling, you know. I
- 16:46Speaker 1: get I get copy to do a commercial. I feel like, man,
- 16:49Speaker 1: I don't feel like memorizing this. How do you remember?
- 16:51Speaker 1: I watched the technique? So really I need to just
- 16:53Speaker 1: go and just hand write everything down, hand write it
- 16:56Speaker 1: down three times, hand writing lines down three times, three times,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and then start to memorize or start you know, just
- 17:03Speaker 1: started it, started the process and start taking over and
- 17:06Speaker 1: meask you this, how about how about reading it to somebody?
- 17:09Speaker 1: You know, you know, going through the scene line by
- 17:11Speaker 1: line and does that help too. You can definitely do that,
- 17:15Speaker 1: but there's some there's some work that you need to
- 17:17Speaker 1: do on your own. You stop, start with stop work
- 17:26Speaker 1: on your own first and then invite others that. Okay
- 17:29Speaker 1: before I just make that bang with my my laziness.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So that's really really really like you. It's gonna be
- 17:35Speaker 1: honest because you know, to be as successful as you
- 17:38Speaker 1: are that has you have the album back you said,
- 17:40Speaker 1: once you get a system of Sean you lay into
- 17:43Speaker 1: and you do it and you build on it. But
- 17:45Speaker 1: somebody comes over, don't have a system. Don't let them
- 17:47Speaker 1: mess up your day trying to trying to memorize some
- 17:49Speaker 1: stuff they don't even know how to, how to get started,
- 17:52Speaker 1: just walking in the room, walking in the room cold. Now,
- 17:56Speaker 1: before we finish this interview, definitely remind everybody. February seven,
- 18:00Speaker 1: at the Blasco Theater, Belaska's would it be E l A.
- 18:03Speaker 1: S c O Theater in New York City, the previews
- 18:07Speaker 1: for A Girl from the North Country will start and
- 18:10Speaker 1: I'm talking to Janet Jeannette excuse me. She's an inn
- 18:13Speaker 1: w C Image Award winner and in two thousand and eight.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I'm telling in eighteen by lung collapse collapse when I
- 18:19Speaker 1: was watching the basketball game, and I stayed in hospital
- 18:21Speaker 1: for thirty days. Thirty days, and uh, you know it
- 18:26Speaker 1: wasn't I didn't plan to stand there. I checked out.
- 18:28Speaker 1: I checked. I was so weird because I attempted to
- 18:31Speaker 1: check out the hospital three times, and every time I
- 18:33Speaker 1: checked out, I could tell if something wasn't right, and
- 18:37Speaker 1: I went back in there the long recollapsed. And so
- 18:41Speaker 1: so when you're staying there for thirty days, it really
- 18:43Speaker 1: I was at the time, I was thirty two, so
- 18:47Speaker 1: I was still, you know, invincible. I still wasn't mortal.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I feel that, you know, you could, I could do
- 18:53Speaker 1: no wrong. And so and I was one of those
- 18:55Speaker 1: guys that you know at that age, you know, you know,
- 18:57Speaker 1: if if I got the cold, I just go play
- 18:59Speaker 1: basket ball, sweat it out of me. And so this
- 19:01Speaker 1: was the first time in my life where I couldn't
- 19:04Speaker 1: do that. I couldn't just go play basketball, you know,
- 19:06Speaker 1: I couldn't just just I just couldn't just run a
- 19:09Speaker 1: jog or whatever just to just to just to be
- 19:11Speaker 1: healthy again. I couldn't wheel myself back and it really
- 19:14Speaker 1: calls me to uh pause about death, about you know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: uh that window that we're giving and what are you
- 19:23Speaker 1: gonna do in that window? And it really calls me
- 19:25Speaker 1: the focus because of ninteen ainty one a year later
- 19:28Speaker 1: because after you know, after I got out of the hospital,
- 19:30Speaker 1: you know, I still have this long scar because they
- 19:32Speaker 1: take my long out, fixed the sins and then put
- 19:35Speaker 1: it back in, and so I had to I had
- 19:37Speaker 1: this big fear that you know, when I would do weights,
- 19:39Speaker 1: that I would tear the scar tissue and so the
- 19:42Speaker 1: scars and so so it was a real about a year.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I was just really pairing up physically about what I
- 19:47Speaker 1: could do. And so in ninteen ainty one, it was
- 19:51Speaker 1: August ninth, Octal ninth, ninteen anyone. And I made a
- 19:54Speaker 1: conscious effort that I was I wasn't gonna be afraid
- 19:56Speaker 1: of my life. I wasn't gonna be afraid of failure,
- 19:58Speaker 1: I was gonna be afraid of death. I wasn't gonna
- 20:00Speaker 1: be afraid period. But I was going to see opportunity
- 20:03Speaker 1: and I would can pursue any opportunity that I was
- 20:05Speaker 1: given to me. Max effort, max effort, And I've never
- 20:08Speaker 1: changed that those values in my life since. And in
- 20:12Speaker 1: two thousand and eight, you had a pulmonary pulmonary imbalance. Okay,
- 20:19Speaker 1: explain to us what that is, and then explained the
- 20:21Speaker 1: impact that had in your life. Basically, I had blood
- 20:25Speaker 1: slots in both of my lungs. So I was flying
- 20:29Speaker 1: on the plane and it was a long flight. I
- 20:33Speaker 1: had been I was on tour with the color problet time,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and I had been taking long flights. And my thing
- 20:38Speaker 1: was don't sleep at night and sleep all sleep the
- 20:41Speaker 1: entire time on the plane. Right. But I'm not thinking, like, no,
- 20:44Speaker 1: you have to get up and walk around. That's not
- 20:46Speaker 1: in my head. Um, I'm on this slight. My legs
- 20:50Speaker 1: and hurting me extremely bad, and I don't know why,
- 20:52Speaker 1: and I'm so tired. I'm like, man, I'm so so tired.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I get off the plane. I stand up to when
- 20:57Speaker 1: we were to do both the plan, I stand up,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and I just I couldn't really breathe all of a sudden,
- 21:04Speaker 1: It's like I could not breathe, and then I then
- 21:07Speaker 1: I could breathe again, and then my leg when I
- 21:09Speaker 1: couldn't breathe, my legs stopped hurting me. And so when
- 21:12Speaker 1: I got off the plant. I just felt I felt
- 21:15Speaker 1: off and dizzy, and so I was like, you know,
- 21:18Speaker 1: I need to get help. So I just went to
- 21:19Speaker 1: like a security guard and I was like, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 1: I don't feel good, and so they had to um um,
- 21:25Speaker 1: they called the ambulance and they came and checked me
- 21:28Speaker 1: out and they were like, wow, all my levels were elevated.
- 21:31Speaker 1: They ended up taking me to the hospital. And when
- 21:34Speaker 1: I went to the hospital, they did a cash skin
- 21:36Speaker 1: and they did everything they needed to do and they're like, listen,
- 21:38Speaker 1: you have stuff at a severe pulmonary embolism um and
- 21:43Speaker 1: and you have it if you have crossed them both
- 21:45Speaker 1: of your lungs, and we gotta punch on IC to you.
- 21:47Speaker 1: And at this point I felt fine, like what And
- 21:50Speaker 1: the long story short, I ended up standing in the
- 21:52Speaker 1: hospital for about five days. My family had to flywers
- 21:55Speaker 1: in Portland, so they had to come out of Portland
- 21:56Speaker 1: me get me and and I had to and I
- 22:00Speaker 1: had to stop working for like nine months. Well they
- 22:02Speaker 1: told me I could return back to work sooner, but um,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I had to be on bluffiness for nine months and
- 22:09Speaker 1: that and people, I mean the doctors and the nurses,
- 22:12Speaker 1: they were just like, we're so happy you came because
- 22:14Speaker 1: they understood the severity of it. I didn't. I was like, okay,
- 22:18Speaker 1: but I'm feel fine right now. They're like like, you don't.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You're a miracle right now, right right right right, you know.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And so really I'm just so relatable to me because
- 22:29Speaker 1: when I arrived at the hospital, they went, you know,
- 22:31Speaker 1: some you're about to die. You know, if we don't
- 22:34Speaker 1: operate immediately, you're about to die. So this story is
- 22:36Speaker 1: just so cool. So matches some of the some of
- 22:39Speaker 1: the instincts that I felt. I thought I was fine.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I drove myself to the hospital with a collapsed long Okay,
- 22:47Speaker 1: that's how I thought everything was cool. Let me just
- 22:49Speaker 1: go over here and just check it out. So how
- 22:51Speaker 1: did that? How did that change your life? Man? I
- 22:55Speaker 1: tell you if I wasn't dreaming before, when you go
- 22:58Speaker 1: through as you know, when you go through a situation
- 23:00Speaker 1: like that, you understand light is so precious and you
- 23:03Speaker 1: could be here fine one day and just go on
- 23:06Speaker 1: the next. So I felt like, listen, I need to
- 23:09Speaker 1: accomplish everything. I need to I need to I need
- 23:11Speaker 1: to die. I need to die empty, meaning that the
- 23:15Speaker 1: world has received everything that God has put inside of me,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and I have nothing left to give, then I'm ready
- 23:22Speaker 1: to go, but I don't want to. I don't want
- 23:24Speaker 1: to die with all my talents and ideas and dreams
- 23:27Speaker 1: and purpose inside of me, Like I need to fulfill
- 23:31Speaker 1: those things so that the next generation can benefit from
- 23:34Speaker 1: the things that were given to me. So when you
- 23:36Speaker 1: have that attitude, man, you're feel this and you're you're
- 23:39Speaker 1: motivated and you understand that you you're you're walking in purpose.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So when you meet people is purposeful, when you speak
- 23:45Speaker 1: is purposeful. Everything that you do there's a purpose. You're
- 23:48Speaker 1: not doing it just to do it. But you're like, listen,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I have to set time on this earth. I was
- 23:53Speaker 1: just I was just my time was just extended. So
- 23:56Speaker 1: I'm going to um, I'm gonna use that time wisely. Wow,
- 24:01Speaker 1: Definitely the focus changes. You know. Let's say if I
- 24:04Speaker 1: who was on a peloton bike, I'll be looking at
- 24:07Speaker 1: you and ask me. Right there, she's saying everything that
- 24:09Speaker 1: I believe in. That's my girl right there. Let's keep peeling,
- 24:12Speaker 1: let's keep pelling success. Let's let everybody know it's just
- 24:14Speaker 1: twenty four hours in the day. Let's take advantage of
- 24:16Speaker 1: every hour. Let's do it. Let's don't stop. Let's not
- 24:18Speaker 1: be afraid. The success will come your way if you
- 24:21Speaker 1: work hard for understand and and and it was important
- 24:24Speaker 1: to me to UM to live that, but also UM
- 24:30Speaker 1: encourage others to live that way as well who have
- 24:32Speaker 1: not experienced that. Appreciate you, you know, and just let
- 24:35Speaker 1: people know. Listen, you have one life. Let's go. Let's
- 24:38Speaker 1: do it. You have ideas, Let's go. I'll help you.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Let's go. You know, I'm telling you, I'm talking to you.
- 24:43Speaker 1: By your devil, by your dead, by your she will
- 24:47Speaker 1: be your starring. I tell you, I'm interviewing, so I'm
- 24:49Speaker 1: gonna say starring. I know they have co starring, but

- 25:10Speaker 1: For those of you who don't know Bob Dylan, or
- 25:12Speaker 1: who have heard a Bob Dylan but didn't really pay attention.
