- 0:00This one's for anyone who's ever stared at an unread text notification and
- 0:03thought, I'll love them tomorrow. Let's be
- 0:07honest. There's a difference between caring deeply and being constantly
- 0:11available, and a lot of us are confusing the two. We've
- 0:14all had that day off, the one where we'd swore we'd rest
- 0:18and then said yes to helping someone move, mediating a group chat
- 0:22conflict, and dropping off a pie we didn't bake. Suddenly,
- 0:26your soul care day or Sabbath looks suspiciously like another shift.
- 0:30Welcome to Messy Advice for People Who Care, a summer series from
- 0:34Journey with Care for anyone who loves deeply and occasionally fantasizes
- 0:38about becoming unreachable. We're talking about caregiving,
- 0:41boundaries, burnout, and the not so clear moments of loving it
- 0:45as well, minus the formulas. This is
- 0:49Johan on the edge of helpful, offering wisdom for when your soul needs
- 0:52rest and your inbox needs deleting. Hey.
- 0:56If you've ever wondered whether you're allowed to take a break from caring,
- 1:00this one's for you. Here's the question we're gonna address today.
- 1:06I love people, but I'm exhausted.
- 1:09Does stepping back mean that I've stopped caring?
- 1:13That's a brave question and, honestly, one I wish more of us
- 1:17would ask before hitting our limit. According to a
- 1:202023 survey by the Canadian Center for Caregiving
- 1:23Excellence, forty seven percent of caregivers reported
- 1:27feeling tired, forty four percent felt worried or anxious,
- 1:31and thirty seven percent felt overwhelmed due to their caregiving
- 1:35responsibilities. So if you ever found yourself emotionally
- 1:38drained just thinking about another quick favor, you're in
- 1:42good company. It's not just you. It's a shared experience among
- 1:46other caregivers. But you see, exhaustion isn't
- 1:49failure. It's feedback. And let's talk about what
- 1:53that feedback is trying to say. Just because you care
- 1:57doesn't mean you're on call twenty four seven. That's not
- 2:00compassion. That's customer service. Picture
- 2:04this. You've got one quiet evening ahead,
- 2:08a hot drink, a show you're looking to finish, then
- 2:12the phone buzzes. Hey. Sorry. Last minute. I know, but
- 2:16could you dot dot dot. Your brain screams
- 2:19no, and your heart whispers maybe,
- 2:23and your fingers type, of course.
- 2:27And suddenly, you're back in the game, resentful,
- 2:31tired, and still trying to be holy.
- 2:34Let's take a look at this passage in Luke five fifteen
- 2:38to 16. Let's get biblical.
- 2:42Biblical. By this point in Luke's gospel, Jesus's
- 2:46reputation is exploding. Crowds are
- 2:49gathering. People are bringing their sick. They're hurting. They're desperate.
- 2:54He's in high demand for healing, for teaching, for hope.
- 2:57Like, back in the day, forget Taylor Swift. This is Jesus we're talking
- 3:01about. And in verse 16, we get this little line that almost
- 3:05feels like a whisper in scripture, But Jesus often
- 3:08withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Not
- 3:12once, not after he finished everything on his
- 3:16list, but often. He didn't
- 3:19vanish out of frustration. He didn't burn out and disappear.
- 3:23He stepped away intentionally, prayerfully,
- 3:28even while people were still waiting. And
- 3:31that's huge because some of us feel like stepping
- 3:35back is only allowed after everyone else is okay.
- 3:39But Jesus showed us a different rhythm, one where rest
- 3:43isn't earned. It's part of obedience, where love doesn't
- 3:46mean endless access, and faithfulness includes quiet
- 3:50places. Jesus didn't ghost people, and
- 3:54he didn't let their needs dictate his life and calling either
- 3:58because even perfect love had patterns of
- 4:01pause to reconnect his soul with God,
- 4:05to get that refueling. And if Jesus needed space to
- 4:09breathe, pray, and be alone, we probably
- 4:12do too. So if you're tired, maybe the most
- 4:16faithful thing you could do is rest. Not because you don't
- 4:20care, but because you do, Deep care without
- 4:23rest eventually turns into resentment, and we don't want
- 4:27that. So take a step back. Take a
- 4:30breath. Love will still be there when you return.
- 4:34And, hey, if this resonated with you, you're not the only one trying to love
- 4:38without collapsing. Give yourself permission to
- 4:41pause. And if you got a messy question about
- 4:45caregiving, compassion fatigue, or your inner urge to
- 4:48escape to the mountains, join us on our Care Impact
- 4:52Facebook group, bunch of like minded individuals there. We're we're
- 4:56asking the same questions. And until next time, keep loving,
- 4:59keep laughing, and if you need to go off grid, at least charge your
- 5:03phone first and stay curious.
