Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It is Verdict with Ted Cruz Weekend Review. Ben Ferguson
- 0:04Speaker 2: with you, and these are the stories that you may
- 0:06Speaker 2: have missed that we talked about this week. First up,
- 0:09Speaker 2: Donald Trump still moving forward with tariffs even after there
- 0:12Speaker 2: was a ruling for the Supreme Court. How was he
- 0:15Speaker 2: able to do that and did he actually get advice
- 0:17Speaker 2: from a Supreme Court justice? Yeah, he did, we'll tell
- 0:20Speaker 2: you all about it. Also, the State of the Union speech,
- 0:23Speaker 2: It moved the needle for Donald Trump with Americans, including
- 0:27Speaker 2: some Democrats. What did he say that connected with so
- 0:29Speaker 2: many Americans. We'll have that for you as well. And finally,
- 0:33Speaker 2: an entering story out of the Olympics. Two different Olympians
- 0:36Speaker 2: with hearts in different places, one skating their heart out
- 0:41Speaker 2: for America and the other one saying, yeah, I may
- 0:43Speaker 2: have grown up here, but I'd rather skate for China.
- 0:47Speaker 2: That incredible story. In just a second, it's the weekend
- 0:50Speaker 2: Review and it starts right now. All right, I want
- 0:53Speaker 2: to move on to another issue. And we made predictions
- 0:56Speaker 2: on this show. I should This is why I should
- 0:57Speaker 2: say you made predictions on the show myself from them,
- 1:01Speaker 2: I always.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Look at this, who's wee? Ben throwing me overboard so.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Fast, Centater, you made a prediction about the Supreme Court
- 1:09Speaker 2: on tariffs. It was actually really funy. This morning, I
- 1:11Speaker 2: was doing a Foxing Sunday shandn't bring much to me,
- 1:13Speaker 2: She goes. I listened to y'all the show when you
- 1:15Speaker 2: were making your predictions, because nine percent of the time
- 1:18Speaker 2: Ted's right on the Spring Court, and he made a prediction.
- 1:21Speaker 2: He thought it was going to go to the President's
- 1:22Speaker 2: way on these It didn't. But there was also something
- 1:25Speaker 2: interesting in there. Brett Kavanaugh wrote basically in there, and
- 1:28Speaker 2: I found this incredibly interesting that hey, what we're saying
- 1:32Speaker 2: you did, you can't necessarily do it that way. However,
- 1:35Speaker 2: here is a way you can do it. It reminded
- 1:38Speaker 2: me almost of like Obamacare, when they're like, well, if
- 1:40Speaker 2: you do it this way, then you can get away
- 1:42Speaker 2: with it, but the way you're doing it, don't keep
- 1:44Speaker 2: doing it that way. Do it this other way. It
- 1:46Speaker 2: was like a roadmap for him to still have tariffs,
- 1:49Speaker 2: still have the power that the presidency needs to do this,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and you saw the President jump all over that with
- 1:53Speaker 2: a ten percent saying this ain't going away. I don't
- 1:56Speaker 2: know if this is a big of a defeat as
- 1:58Speaker 2: Democrats and media are trying to make it to be,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and the present incant response, I think it proves he
- 2:03Speaker 2: still has a ton of power.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Well, listen, I'm going to start by eating crow.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I did make a prediction on this podcast, and I
- 2:12Speaker 1: make a lot of predictions on this podcast, and we've
- 2:14Speaker 1: never tallied the number, but I think we're north of
- 2:17Speaker 1: eighty percent, and maybe even north of ninety percent.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Right, I'm gonna get a credit it's above ninety because
- 2:21Speaker 2: I make sure I give you a hard time when
- 2:23Speaker 2: you're wrong, and that's not very often, so this is
- 2:25Speaker 2: on that sheet. But you know, yeah, and.
- 2:28Speaker 1: By the way, we don't make small and mild predictions.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I mean, I mean we make bold and aggressive predictions.
- 2:35Speaker 1: In twenty twenty four.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Were the biggest one, Yeah, Joe Biden. Let's let's just
- 2:39Speaker 3: talk about it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I predicted that Joe Biden would not be the nominee
- 2:42Speaker 1: a year before it happened, and said they are going
- 2:46Speaker 1: to replace him, he is not going to be on
- 2:49Speaker 1: the ballot November, and the corporate media made fun of
- 2:53Speaker 1: me like crazy for that prediction.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Of course, it was exactly right.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We've made a lot of predictions we broke down in
- 3:00Speaker 1: in March and April of the beginning of COVID. I
- 3:02Speaker 1: laid out the evidence that the COVID virus escaped from
- 3:06Speaker 1: a Chinese government lab right at the beginning, and the
- 3:10Speaker 1: predictions and that we laid out there. The evidence we
- 3:13Speaker 1: laid out there was was square on right. So I
- 3:15Speaker 1: made a prediction that the Supreme Court five to four
- 3:18Speaker 1: would uphold the president's use of Terroffts. That prediction proved false.
- 3:23Speaker 1: What actually happened is six' three The court struck it.
- 3:26Speaker 1: DOWN i also predicted That John roberts would write the majority.
- 3:29Speaker 1: OPINION i guess that that did prove technically, accurate but
- 3:33Speaker 1: he wrote the majority opinion going the other. Way here's
- 3:36Speaker 1: WHY i thought The court was going to uphold the president's,
- 3:39Speaker 1: Tariffs AND i, said they're a massive reliance. Interests there
- 3:43Speaker 1: have been hundreds of billions of dollars of tariffs, collected
- 3:46Speaker 1: and The court is reluctant to dramatically upset the status.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Quo AND i did say if The court were deciding
- 3:54Speaker 1: this issue a year, ago right at the beginning of
- 3:56Speaker 1: The trump, ADMINISTRATION i, SAID i think they'd come.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Out the other.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Way but after a year, plus after this being central
- 4:03Speaker 1: to the economic and foreign policy agenda of the, PRESIDENT
- 4:08Speaker 1: i thought.
- 4:08Speaker 3: The court would not struck it. Down that proved.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Wrong but at the end of the, DAY i don't
- 4:15Speaker 1: think it matters a whole. Lot let's cut to the.
- 4:17Speaker 1: CONCLUSION i don't think the consequences of this decision are
- 4:21Speaker 1: going to be all that. Much what the court decided
- 4:25Speaker 1: narrowly is that one particular, STATUTE aipa does not give
- 4:30Speaker 1: the president the authority to impose. Tariffs, now mind, YOU
- 4:34Speaker 1: aipa gives the president the authority to quote regulate. Importations
- 4:40Speaker 1: and so the majority opinion, concluded the president can ban
- 4:45Speaker 1: an import from a, country can say we will import Zero.
- 4:50Speaker 3: German cars Into.
- 4:51Speaker 1: America he can do, that but he can't say we're
- 4:54Speaker 1: going to charge a dollar for each one of Those german.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Cars that is a pretty loopy.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Inclusion AND i got to say the, Descents Justice kavanaugh
- 5:03Speaker 1: wrote the lead, Dissent Justice thomas wrote an excellent. DESCENT
- 5:06Speaker 1: i think the descents get the much better of the
- 5:09Speaker 1: argument that the words That congress put in THE iepa
- 5:13Speaker 1: statute regulate, importation And Justice thomas had had an originalist
- 5:18Speaker 1: dissent where he goes through in the foreign policy, area in,
- 5:22Speaker 1: particular the ability to import goods from other countries was
- 5:27Speaker 1: never viewed as a. Right it was a privilege the
- 5:29Speaker 1: government allowed you to. Do and in, fact tariffs were
- 5:31Speaker 1: a major tool government used to regulate importation from other.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Countries SO i think the majority decision is. Wrong but
- 5:40Speaker 1: here's the thing that. Matters there are so many other
- 5:44Speaker 1: statutes that allow the president to impose tariffs THAT i
- 5:49Speaker 1: think we will see essentially the same. Regime it's gonna
- 5:51Speaker 1: be a little more, complicated he's gonna have to do
- 5:53Speaker 1: a little bit more, work it's going to require some
- 5:54Speaker 1: more legal, proceedings BUT i think you're going to see.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Him we saw immediately the president announced a ten percent
- 6:01Speaker 1: tariff on every. Country he then upped that to fifteen.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Percent BUT i think at the end of the, day
- 6:06Speaker 1: The president will continue to use tariffs as a critical
- 6:10Speaker 1: part of his foreign. Policy AND i, hope and we've
- 6:13Speaker 1: talked about this On verdict, BEFORE i hope that he
- 6:15Speaker 1: uses tariffs as leverage to open up foreign. MARKETS i
- 6:19Speaker 1: don't want a world where we have high tariffs for,
- 6:21Speaker 1: everyone BUT i do think tariffs are very powerful, leverage
- 6:26Speaker 1: AND i think the president has ample authority to continue using.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Them you know interesting about this when it, happened there
- 6:32Speaker 2: was two people that were really, celebrating two, GROUPS i
- 6:34Speaker 2: should say The Democratic party In, china And china was
- 6:40Speaker 2: really celebrating. This and then they were talking about buying
- 6:42Speaker 2: soybean crops from other countries instead Of, america and that
- 6:45Speaker 2: was like one of the big things that really blew
- 6:47Speaker 2: up in the media on social. Media and then you
- 6:51Speaker 2: have the same excitement from The Chinese Communist party as
- 6:54Speaker 2: you did from The Democratic. Party that tells me an
- 6:57Speaker 2: awful lot about this tariff war. Issue this is just Two,
- 7:01Speaker 2: democrats not about what's best For, america not about us
- 7:04Speaker 2: having better trade. Deal it's not about Saving american jobs
- 7:07Speaker 2: Or american, manufacturing protecting that or bringing jobs back to
- 7:11Speaker 2: this country in manufacturing and bringing Back american businesses to our.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Soil they just Want Donald trump to. Lose and they're
- 7:18Speaker 2: on the same team With china on this.
- 7:20Speaker 1: One. Yeah look that that's Where democrats, Are that's where
- 7:23Speaker 1: much of the media. Is let me walk through two.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Things Number, one there's gonna be some. Chaos one of
- 7:28Speaker 1: the REASONS i didn't think The court would. Do what
- 7:29Speaker 1: they did is you've got hundreds of billions of dollars
- 7:33Speaker 1: of tariffs that's going to be. Collected there's gonna be massive.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Litigation everyone that's paid the tariffs is gonna look at
- 7:38Speaker 1: go DO i go?
- 7:39Speaker 3: Back DO i? Sue DO i try to collect.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It it's gonna vary in terms of whether they filed
- 7:45Speaker 1: a timely protest to the. TARIFFS i think some of those,
- 7:48Speaker 1: tariffs the litigation result is going to be, no you
- 7:52Speaker 1: can't get it back because you didn't timely protest. It
- 7:55Speaker 1: some of the people who paid tariffs will have timely protested,
- 7:58Speaker 1: it and so there's a very good chance this is
- 8:01Speaker 1: going to Cost american taxpayers billions of, dollars maybe even
- 8:04Speaker 1: tens of billions of dollars or. More that litigation chaos
- 8:08Speaker 1: will will unfold for. YEARS i didn't think The court
- 8:11Speaker 1: would do. That but in terms of the president's ability
- 8:14Speaker 1: to do, this so let me walk through some of
- 8:16Speaker 1: the different statutes that are. Available there is number, one
- 8:19Speaker 1: section three three eight of The Terriff act of nineteen
- 8:22Speaker 1: thirty that's actually The Smoot Holly, act which authorizes The
- 8:26Speaker 1: president to impose teriffs of up to fifty percent on
- 8:30Speaker 1: imports from any country that, quote discriminates AGAINST us. Businesses
- 8:36Speaker 1: the statute is vague and it is, short and no
- 8:40Speaker 1: president has used this, authority so it's uncharted, area but
- 8:43Speaker 1: it remains on the statute. Book so that's one. Area another,
- 8:47Speaker 1: area which is where The president went pretty much, immediately
- 8:53Speaker 1: Is section one twenty two of The Trade act of
- 8:56Speaker 1: nineteen seventy. Four The section one twenty two gives The
- 9:00Speaker 1: president the power to impose duties of up to fifteen
- 9:02Speaker 1: percent for up to one hundred and fifty days in
- 9:05Speaker 1: order to address, quote large and serious balance of payments.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Deficits congress has to vote to extend them past the
- 9:14Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty day, limit or else the duties,
- 9:17Speaker 1: expire but The president is able to reissue them on.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Expiration this is what The president used as a result
- 9:27Speaker 1: immediately to impose the fifteen percent. Tariff so that's one,
- 9:31Speaker 1: avenue and then that there are a couple of Other
- 9:33Speaker 1: section three oh one of The Trade act of nineteen
- 9:36Speaker 1: seventy four authorizes THE Us Trade representative to investigate and
- 9:40Speaker 1: act upon results of an investigation revealing unfair trade. Practices
- 9:46Speaker 1: section three oh one has been used quite a. Bit
- 9:49Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, four The biden administration opened three investigations
- 9:54Speaker 1: under section three oh one and determined that the country
- 10:00Speaker 1: had violated violated the provisions. There that's also what In
- 10:07Speaker 1: trump's second, ADMINISTRATION Us Trade Representative's office has opened a
- 10:10Speaker 1: three on one investigation Into brazil And, china and they're
- 10:14Speaker 1: considering one For. Korea so section three oh one takes an.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Investigation it's a little, slower but it gives more potent tariff.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Authority there is Also section two thirty two of The
- 10:25Speaker 1: Trade Expansion act.
- 10:26Speaker 3: In nineteen sixty, two.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And that allows the president to impose restrictions on goods
- 10:32Speaker 1: and imports and following an investigation if it's found that
- 10:38Speaker 1: the imports quote threatened to IMPAIR us national. Security So
- 10:43Speaker 1: trump has used that for steel imports and aluminum. Imports
- 10:48Speaker 1: in twenty twenty, five he expanded steel in aluminum, teriffs
- 10:52Speaker 1: increasing the aluminum rate to twenty five, percent eliminating all country.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Exemptions to, date The trump administration has launched twelve Different
- 11:01Speaker 1: section two thirty two, investigations concluded five and then there's
- 11:06Speaker 1: Finally section two one of The Trade active of nineteen
- 11:09Speaker 1: seventy four which permits temporary safeguard tariffs to protect domestic
- 11:15Speaker 1: industries from serious injury caused by import.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Surges trump has Used.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Section two one to put tariffs on solar, cells on,
- 11:25Speaker 1: modules and in residential washing. Machines look the long and
- 11:28Speaker 1: short of, It you guys don't need to memorize all
- 11:30Speaker 1: those different section. Numbers the point is they're a bunch
- 11:34Speaker 1: of different federal laws that give the president a bunch
- 11:39Speaker 1: of authority to impost. Tariffs the lawyers and the administration
- 11:43Speaker 1: wire work a little bit, Harder As Justice kavanaugh said in,
- 11:46Speaker 1: dissent at the end of the, day The Supreme court, said,
- 11:49Speaker 1: well you check the wrong box and you pick the wrong,
- 11:52Speaker 1: statute so these tariffs don't. Apply but the bottom line
- 11:55Speaker 1: is going to be The president's going to be able
- 11:57Speaker 1: to get there using other.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Means, NOW i want to hear the rest of this.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Conversation you can go back and listen to the full
- 12:03Speaker 2: podcast from earlier this.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Week now onto story number.
- 12:08Speaker 4: Two the question THAT i have as a as a
- 12:11Speaker 4: proper conservative who is always looking for the downside of
- 12:14Speaker 4: things just to temper, my you, know. Jubilation do you
- 12:19Speaker 4: THINK i think universally the speech was viewed as quite,
- 12:22Speaker 4: good quite. Effective does it make a meaningful difference in the?
- 12:27Speaker 1: Midterms, LOOK i think it. Does do you all, right
- 12:31Speaker 1: lay out What i'll tell you.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Why this speech was the things that Irritate republican slash
- 12:42Speaker 2: moderate voters About, trump that it's all about, him and
- 12:46Speaker 2: he doesn't know when to you know, that the mean
- 12:48Speaker 2: tweets and to when to shut, up and and and
- 12:51Speaker 2: the things that irritate those that can stay. Home watching
- 12:55Speaker 2: his demeanor, tonight he came across in such a way of,
- 12:59Speaker 2: like these guys don't want, This these guys don't put you,
- 13:03Speaker 2: First these guys don't do. This he also was giving
- 13:06Speaker 2: incredible accolades and awards and THE us hockey. Team there
- 13:10Speaker 2: was momentum. There it was one after. Another it was
- 13:13Speaker 2: one hundred year old, man a. Veteran it was the
- 13:15Speaker 2: guy who was flying the, helicopter The chinook and telling a.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Story he was praising what Makes america great and the
- 13:22Speaker 2: people that Make america. GREAT i actually think that if
- 13:26Speaker 2: you are a moderate, voter someone maybe A republican that
- 13:30Speaker 2: traditionally stays home during the, MIDTERMS i actually think that
- 13:34Speaker 2: this speech landed with you more than any other speech
- 13:37Speaker 2: Of trump the way it played ON. TV i think
- 13:40Speaker 2: it also is going to land on the economic issues
- 13:44Speaker 2: of him reminding the no tax on, tips the no
- 13:46Speaker 2: tax on, Overtime i'm trying to make life more, affordable
- 13:50Speaker 2: the gas. Prices those are things THAT i actually, think,
- 13:53Speaker 2: well you, know they've been hammering him on all the
- 13:55Speaker 2: approval rings at forty this or thirty nine or thirty
- 13:58Speaker 2: depending on. POLL i think it's a bump that actually
- 14:01Speaker 2: stays because he landed it so well in the, audience
- 14:05Speaker 2: and he looked really, Calm he looked really just Like
- 14:08Speaker 2: i'm doing this BECAUSE i want to fix the, country
- 14:11Speaker 2: and other speeches haven't come across that way.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Always, yeah let me agree with. You and THEN i
- 14:17Speaker 1: think the message tonight was the record of the last.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Year.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah the record of the last, YEAR i believe is objectively. Phenomenal.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah And i've been in The senate now fourteen. Years
- 14:29Speaker 1: we've never had a year where we've accomplished even a
- 14:32Speaker 1: fraction of what we did has been accomplished in the last.
- 14:36Speaker 1: YEAR i, mean it is. Staggering and he did a good.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Job you, know we talked about on the last pod
- 14:42Speaker 1: HOW i spent thirty forty minutes on the phone With
- 14:45Speaker 1: trump last, week and one of the things we talked
- 14:48Speaker 1: about was messaging for the, midterms AND i, said, listen
- 14:52Speaker 1: we need to focus on, results on the very real
- 14:55Speaker 1: results securing the, border nine and nine percent drop in elou.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Crossings and THEN i encouraged him a message that's not
- 15:07Speaker 1: getting the attention it should is the impact on. Crime,
- 15:10Speaker 1: yes they murder rates have dropped twenty, percent drug overdose
- 15:15Speaker 1: deaths have dropped twenty. Percent they're literally thousands Of americans
- 15:20Speaker 1: who were alive today Because trump was elected And republicans Won.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Congress it's a great message and that's been. Lost AND
- 15:27Speaker 1: i was really, happy like the first twenty minutes of
- 15:31Speaker 1: the speech were laying out that message and going through
- 15:35Speaker 1: murder rates and crime rates and D c rates and
- 15:38Speaker 1: like how unhappy The democrats were that crime rates had
- 15:43Speaker 1: plummeted in D. C And New orleans and your hometown Of. Memphis. Memphis,
- 15:47Speaker 1: yeah The democrats were furious that fewer people are being.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Murdered they wouldn't stand up on mass for murder. Declining
- 15:54Speaker 4: you know. THIS i was looking at the polls and
- 15:56Speaker 4: aggregate of the polls from Just january And february leading into,
- 15:59Speaker 4: this and to.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Be, fair the pro murder community In america is pretty.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Small it is, look it's a, constituency but it's not
- 16:06Speaker 1: the one you. Want and SO i was.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Looking at as aggrit of, Polls, MARIS, pbs a handful of,
- 16:13Speaker 4: others and the hard FACT i spoke to some members
- 16:16Speaker 4: Of congress about this. Today the hard fact Is republicans
- 16:20Speaker 4: are underwater on the, economy on economic. PERCEPTION i think
- 16:24Speaker 4: you could could turn it, around but right now we're
- 16:26Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Underwater on.
- 16:27Speaker 4: Healthcare democrats always went on healthcare and on a defensive
- 16:31Speaker 4: democracy or it's kind of a contrived, category but, anyway
- 16:36Speaker 4: they went on. That so the ones that we're winning
- 16:38Speaker 4: on right now quite decisively are immigration and border, enforcement
- 16:43Speaker 4: even more so now the border is shut, down and
- 16:47Speaker 4: especially on. Crime so the, key it seems to, me
- 16:50Speaker 4: is one that tells you people are concerned about, safety and,
- 16:53Speaker 4: two if you can tie all of that, together the
- 16:57Speaker 4: crime relates obviously to illegal, immigration that's why it's called
- 17:01Speaker 4: Illegal and the housing prices even get the way to
- 17:04Speaker 4: the you know the fact that you have six months
- 17:06Speaker 4: consecutive decline on housing prices coinciding with mastery petition.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Too million people being deported and that's just less, demand you.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Know by the, way like a couple of weeks, ago
- 17:15Speaker 1: The Houston chronicle had a front page story that said
- 17:20Speaker 1: murder rates In houston have declined eighteen percent, Yep And
- 17:24Speaker 1: heidi showed me the article because she knew it pissed
- 17:27Speaker 1: me off because the, article, yes the article The chronicle
- 17:32Speaker 1: says nobody can figure out. Why it's completely. Inexplicable the
- 17:36Speaker 1: experts we talk about have no idea why the murder
- 17:39Speaker 1: rate is, dropping and it like doesn't occur to them
- 17:42Speaker 1: that arresting and deporting murderers and gang bangers will reduce
- 17:47Speaker 1: the murder. Rate like it's. Not this is not rocket.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Science fewer murderers means fewer, murders but yet To democrats
- 17:58Speaker 1: that makes no sense to. Them, yeah and so that
- 18:01Speaker 1: message was. GOOD i also liked on no tax on
- 18:03Speaker 1: tips that he had the mom who is the waitress
- 18:07Speaker 1: stand up and he, said between no tax on tips
- 18:11Speaker 1: and no tax on, overtime she's going to take home
- 18:14Speaker 1: five thousand more dollars this year than last. Year that
- 18:17Speaker 1: was real and it's not. Abstract and by the, way
- 18:20Speaker 1: The democrats wouldn't applaud for like the mom waiting. Tables
- 18:24Speaker 1: they're not rooting for, her and they want to take
- 18:27Speaker 1: that five thousand dollars and that's real.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Money you, know five thousand dollars is real. Money it's
- 18:31Speaker 4: not some. Abstraction so nuts and. Bolts you, know if
- 18:35Speaker 4: this was a, speech obviously you're at the, midterms do
- 18:38Speaker 4: you think it moves the?
- 18:40Speaker 1: NEEDLE i did keep message discipline of focusing on. It.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Yes by the, way, yes yesterday, morning you And adam
- 18:48Speaker 2: talking about. THIS i had breakfast A Speaker johnson and
- 18:52Speaker 2: you talk about the reason WHY i think this one.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Sticks there is a very real sense That republican leadership
- 18:59Speaker 2: have our act together for once that we haven't had
- 19:02Speaker 2: in a long.
- 19:02Speaker 1: TIME i also think that.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Matters Speaker johnson understands he basically has a one person
- 19:09Speaker 2: majority he does not want to, have And President trump
- 19:13Speaker 2: doesn't want to have The democrats take over The. House
- 19:16Speaker 2: it is insanely. Slim AND i think they're working so
- 19:20Speaker 2: well together the same Way center that you work so
- 19:22Speaker 2: well with The. President there does seem to be that
- 19:25Speaker 2: we're actually on the same team for. Once i've not
- 19:27Speaker 2: experienced that many times in my life in The Republican.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Party like there's always the. Infighting we always not as
- 19:33Speaker 2: screwed up when we get. Power there's different people jocking for.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Positions there does seem to be a little bit of
- 19:39Speaker 2: momentum now that we're on the same team going the.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Midterms that's the other REASON i think this speech will
- 19:42Speaker 2: continue in the momentum because you Have johnson others.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Advocating, LOOK i hope so to Play devil's. Advocates we're
- 19:51Speaker 1: a very divided, country and so the people who Hate
- 19:54Speaker 1: trump still hate them after the, speech for, sure if
- 19:57Speaker 1: they're not actually. Listening and SO i do Think, ben
- 20:04Speaker 1: you focused on the right, area which is the people
- 20:07Speaker 1: who voted for him in twenty four but maybe demoralized
- 20:11Speaker 1: by the press narrative that has been, driven and to
- 20:14Speaker 1: the extent this focuses them On, wow we're winning some,
- 20:18Speaker 1: big big. VICTORIES i also really Liked, look the no
- 20:22Speaker 1: tax on tips EMPHASIS i liked BECAUSE i wrote that.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Bill AND i really liked his emphasis on The trump accounts,
- 20:29Speaker 1: because as you guys, KNOW i wrote that, too and
- 20:32Speaker 1: The democrats wouldn't applaud for.
- 20:34Speaker 4: That i'm, SORRY i actually have to pause here Because
- 20:36Speaker 4: i'm sitting in the upper part of the gallery to the.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Right if you're the president appointing and you didn't get
- 20:44Speaker 4: everyone was standing up at certain. Moments that was one
- 20:46Speaker 4: WHERE i bolted up and other people were kind of.
- 20:49Speaker 4: SLOWER i think they didn't quite process what The trump accounts.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Meant i'm really into The trump. Accounts like The trump
- 20:55Speaker 4: ACCOUNTS i think are such a white, pill you, know
- 20:59Speaker 4: focusing on which is an existential. Issue it's so, practical
- 21:03Speaker 4: And i'm going to confess. SOMETHING i should follow. This i'm, like,
- 21:06Speaker 4: Professionally i'm supposed to follow this. CLOSELY i did not
- 21:09Speaker 4: know that you were pushing The trump. Accounts you were,
- 21:12Speaker 4: THERE i wrote it. Unbelievable should have, known BUT i didn't.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Know in. Fact do you want to hear the story
- 21:17Speaker 1: of the origin of The trump. Accounts it's a cool.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Story i've told it on the, pod but not in a.
- 21:21Speaker 1: While so they originated from a poker game In. Vegas
- 21:27Speaker 1: typically several poker pros will. Come i'm buddies with a
- 21:30Speaker 1: number of the poker, pros and so we're sitting at
- 21:33Speaker 1: The bellagio three in the morning And Phil, hellmuth who's
- 21:37Speaker 1: one of the greatest poker players to have ever. Lived
- 21:39Speaker 1: phil would tell you he is the greatest poker player
- 21:42Speaker 1: to ever. Lived and he's got a real argument to.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It he's GOT i, think fifteen, bracelets so it's it's.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Crazy that's a. Lot so we're sitting there playing poker
- 21:52Speaker 1: and he asks, me he, says, hey do you Know
- 21:55Speaker 1: Brad Gerster and at the TIME i, Didn't i'm, like,
- 21:58Speaker 1: yeah who's? He and he's a very successful venture capitalist
- 22:04Speaker 1: In Silicon valley and he has this idea that was
- 22:06Speaker 1: called Invest. America And i'm, like what's? That And phil
- 22:10Speaker 1: describes it for a, minute AND i, said, hey that
- 22:13Speaker 1: sounds like Something i'd be really interested. In and So
- 22:17Speaker 1: phil pulls out his phone and he puts together a
- 22:20Speaker 1: text thread and connects me And brad and, says you
- 22:23Speaker 1: too should. Talk you would really like each. Other the next,
- 22:27Speaker 1: Week brad gets on a, plane flies TO, dc comes
- 22:32Speaker 1: to my office and pitches the Invest america. ACCOUNTS i
- 22:37Speaker 1: immediately called my policy team in and, said let's start drafting.
- 22:40Speaker 1: This so we drafted the. Legislation, Now brad has said
- 22:44Speaker 1: for months he had talked to a bunch of other
- 22:46Speaker 1: senators and none of them did a damn. Thing. Huh
- 22:50Speaker 1: he talked to them and they'd all kind of nod
- 22:52Speaker 1: and be, like, yeah, yeah that's a great, idea and
- 22:54Speaker 1: then no one would do. Anything we sat down and
- 22:56Speaker 1: wrote the. Bill that is the bill that Is Trump.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Accounts it was my bills great that we. Wrote it's.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Great and it is literally the case that If Phil
- 23:09Speaker 1: hellmuth does not connect me With Brad Gersner april a year,
- 23:13Speaker 1: ago there are No trump accounts and The american the
- 23:16Speaker 1: kids Of america do not have trillions and, investments which
- 23:20Speaker 1: is what they're going to have Through trump accounts as.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Before if you want to hear the rest of this
- 23:24Speaker 2: conversation on this, topic you can go back and dow
- 23:27Speaker 2: the podcasts from earlier this week to hear the entire.
- 23:30Speaker 2: THING i want to get back to the big story
- 23:33Speaker 2: number three of the.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Week you may have.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Missed all, Right, sanata let's talk about The. Olympics there
- 23:38Speaker 2: were so many cool stories out of The. Olympics obviously
- 23:42Speaker 2: celebrating hockey that kind of took everything over when that,
- 23:45Speaker 2: happened but there were some other really incredible and important
- 23:49Speaker 2: stories in These, olympics and one of them that just
- 23:53Speaker 2: is something we got to talk about is involved not
- 23:56Speaker 2: Only china but Also america's gold medalists who won in figure.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Skating it's an amazing.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Story, well, look we obviously have the incredible victory of
- 24:08Speaker 1: winning the gold in both men's hockey and women's, hockey
- 24:11Speaker 1: AND i got to say that moment was. Extraordinary at
- 24:14Speaker 1: The state of The, union it was wonderful to see
- 24:16Speaker 1: the men's gold Winning olympic hockey team. There the pride
- 24:22Speaker 1: they had For america was. Fabulous but there's also a
- 24:25Speaker 1: story that got some. Coverage BUT i think it's worth
- 24:27Speaker 1: going back and focusing because it was a powerful, contrast
- 24:30Speaker 1: and it was a contrast between Two. Olympians it was
- 24:32Speaker 1: a contrast Between Alyssa lu And Eileen. Goo now both
- 24:37Speaker 1: are women Of chinese. Heritage One, alyssa competed for The United,
- 24:43Speaker 1: states the, Other, eileen competed For. China let's start With
- 24:48Speaker 1: alyssa Because alyssa's story is, extraordinary AND i want to
- 24:51Speaker 1: read from a tweet from a fellow Named afshine M.
- 24:55Speaker 1: RONNIE i don't know who this person, is BUT i
- 24:57Speaker 1: thought the way he wrote it was very Effect here's
- 25:00Speaker 1: what he, Said the Ultimate american revenge, Story the script
- 25:05Speaker 1: couldn't have been have written it. Better in nineteen eighty,
- 25:09Speaker 1: Nine Arthur liu Fled china as a political refugee after
- 25:13Speaker 1: The Tieneman square. Massacre he came To america with nothing
- 25:17Speaker 1: but a dream.
- 25:18Speaker 3: For a free.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Life decades, later his, Daughter Alyssa lu became the face
- 25:23Speaker 1: Of TEAM, usa but THE ccp didn't. Forget before the
- 25:28Speaker 1: twenty Twenty Beijing, olympics THE fbi uncovered a brazen spying.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Operation the Target alissa and her. Father The chinese government
- 25:38Speaker 1: tried to stalk them ON us, soil intimidate her into,
- 25:43Speaker 1: silence pressure her to turn her back on the country
- 25:46Speaker 1: that gave her family. Refuge THE fbi had to give
- 25:50Speaker 1: them twenty four to seven security just so she could.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Compete she faced, intimidation refused to be a. Pawn she
- 26:02Speaker 1: walked away from the sport for two years to find
- 26:06Speaker 1: her soul, again and then she came back with a.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Vengeance today the story is. Complete in a flawless performance
- 26:16Speaker 1: To Donna Summers MacArthur, Park Alyssa leud just did the
- 26:20Speaker 1: Impossible olympic, gold the First american woman to win individual
- 26:26Speaker 1: gold in twenty four. Years she didn't just skate for a.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Medal she skated for the freedom her father risked everything.
- 26:37Speaker 1: For she didn't just win for, herself she won for
- 26:42Speaker 1: the flag that protected her family when the world felt.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Small that's what a patriot looks. Like NOW i gotta,
- 26:49Speaker 1: SAY i want to give listeners some background into this.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Show the way you AND i record this. Spot as
- 26:57Speaker 1: we sit down right before recording, it and we go
- 26:59Speaker 1: through all the story they're in the, news we, sar
- 27:02Speaker 1: what do we want to talk? About and by the,
- 27:03Speaker 1: way the pod is not scripted like you AND i
- 27:05Speaker 1: don't know what we're gonna.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Say we just sort of talk about.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Topics we pick a couple of topics and riff on
- 27:10Speaker 1: it AND i want everyone to. Know ben is, like, no, no,
- 27:14Speaker 1: NO i don't want to cover this. Story ben, SAID
- 27:16Speaker 1: i Hate, AMERICANS i Hate. Olympians, YEAH i can't, skate.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And, True i'm a very good skater And i'm secretly a.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Communist okay there Were, okay, YEAH i got.
- 27:27Speaker 2: It, OKAY i see where we're going.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Here now are you a good? SKATER i suck at.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Skating i'm a horrible.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Skater so my dad's you, know from up. North and
- 27:34Speaker 2: that was like one. Thing it would take us skating
- 27:37Speaker 2: his kids and then we would skate on the. Ponds
- 27:39Speaker 2: we went To North. Dakota so, Yeah i've been skating
- 27:41Speaker 2: a long.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Time i'm an unbelievably bad.
- 27:44Speaker 1: SKATER i basically wobble around the skate rink and hold
- 27:47Speaker 1: onto the walls the whole. Time it's, terrible like four
- 27:50Speaker 1: year olds come skating past me and or like get
- 27:53Speaker 1: out of the, way like you you terrible.
- 27:55Speaker 2: THING i can picture, this AND i believe you completely
- 27:58Speaker 2: That you're not over selling that point at.
- 28:00Speaker 1: All i'm. Not but let's just say for the, RECORD
- 28:03Speaker 1: i can kick your ascid. Basketball and to be, Clear
- 28:07Speaker 1: i've broken your finger playing.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Basketball that is.
- 28:09Speaker 2: True the game the a. Part at some point we
- 28:12Speaker 2: might need a one on one game just so the
- 28:13Speaker 2: audience shows the.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Score, Here i've just, said all, right, look look you've
- 28:17Speaker 1: got mass and. Strength but But i'm Just i'm just,
- 28:21Speaker 1: saying you can't shoot to save your. Life all?
- 28:23Speaker 3: Right why DID i want to cover this?
- 28:26Speaker 1: Story, look some of it is as the child of
- 28:29Speaker 1: a refugee From. CUBA i Find Alyssa lou's story. INSPIRATIONAL
- 28:34Speaker 1: i find.
- 28:34Speaker 2: It now you identify with it's incredible.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And and and, listen there's a contrast with her And Eileen. Gou,
- 28:41Speaker 1: now NOW i want to say. Something So Eileen gu
- 28:44Speaker 1: is also Of chinese. Heritage she's a student At.
- 28:46Speaker 3: Stanford alyssa's a figure.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Skater she won the. Gold Eileen gu is a downhill.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Skier she won two. Silvers both were offered the opportunity
- 28:57Speaker 1: From china that The Chinese communist government, said we will
- 29:00Speaker 1: give you millions of dollars to compete For. China literally.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Millions you're not, joking like some report's been upwards of
- 29:07Speaker 2: six million.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Plus, yeah like massive amounts of. Money And eileen said,
- 29:13Speaker 1: yes And alyssa said. No, NOW i got to, say
- 29:16Speaker 1: in the conservative, media there's been a world of hate
- 29:20Speaker 1: pounded and dumped On.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Eileen i'm not in that.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Camp, look she's a like twenty year old college. KID
- 29:27Speaker 1: i don't have any hate or animosity to. HER i.
- 29:30Speaker 1: UNDERSTAND i, mean, look IF i were in, college no
- 29:33Speaker 1: one there been reports she received like fourteen million. Dollars
- 29:37Speaker 1: no one ever offered me fourteen million dollars in. COLLEGE
- 29:40Speaker 1: i understand. That and there is something of a tradition
- 29:44Speaker 1: in The. Olympics you think about THE nba where you
- 29:47Speaker 1: have all these.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Stars you, Know Victor.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Webba yamu in THE nba competes For, France alpa And
- 29:55Speaker 1: shengoun competes For. Turkey they have lots of people who
- 29:59Speaker 1: are from other countries compete for other countries and no
- 30:01Speaker 1: one is horrified and they're not like you're a horrible human.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Being but let me say here's the.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Difference it's. Different it is, different but go.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Ahead it's the reason why it's this one's different is
- 30:12Speaker 2: when you grow up In america and you do everything
- 30:15Speaker 2: In america and you're part of this country and this
- 30:18Speaker 2: country supports, you and then because someone throws money at,
- 30:21Speaker 2: you you defect to Communists. China that's the difference between
- 30:27Speaker 2: if you come into the league from another country and
- 30:29Speaker 2: you play in THE nba and then you go back
- 30:31Speaker 2: To like WHEN i played, tennis a lot of the
- 30:33Speaker 2: guys from smaller countries would go back and Play Davis
- 30:36Speaker 2: cup or The olympics for their. Team it was, Awesome
- 30:38Speaker 2: like there was teammates of mine that made Their olympic.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Team there was from you, Know kazakhstan or smaller nations
- 30:43Speaker 2: and they were the best in their. Country that's not
- 30:45Speaker 2: defecting From, america, Right but when you're In america and
- 30:48Speaker 2: Your american says and then you're, like all, Right i'm
- 30:50Speaker 2: literally defecting and gonna go do this For china and
- 30:53Speaker 2: it's solely for a big. Payday it was from an athlete,
- 30:58Speaker 2: STANDPOINT i get the. Money but it is different than
- 31:01Speaker 2: if you're in THE nba and you're From france like
- 31:03Speaker 2: Mart gasol And Pau gasol and they go and play
- 31:04Speaker 2: against THE usa in that, Game, LIKE i have no
- 31:07Speaker 2: qualms about.
- 31:07Speaker 1: That that's where you were. Raised to be, clear The
- 31:09Speaker 1: gasols are From, spain Not. France different wherever it. Is
- 31:13Speaker 1: but We latins don't like when you call Us french like.
- 31:16Speaker 1: That that is getting it. Wrong mark there you, Go,
- 31:22Speaker 1: okay you are right that it's. Different you, Know Victor Wemenyama's.
- 31:25Speaker 1: French you grew up In, france like his whole background is.
- 31:27Speaker 1: That so it is different when you go and play
- 31:30Speaker 1: for the country you were born and grew up. In
- 31:33Speaker 1: Both alyssa And eileen were born in and grew up In,
- 31:37Speaker 1: america so that is.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Different that being said, that there.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Was some real vitriol directed At eileen and, listen she's
- 31:46Speaker 1: a twenty year Old olympic. ATHLETE i don't have anger towards.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Her but my view is. Simple if you DECIDE i
- 31:54Speaker 1: want to compete For, CHINA i want to win the
- 31:58Speaker 1: gold medal For, china you can do. That but you
- 32:02Speaker 1: know what you're, SAYING i want one point three billion
- 32:05Speaker 1: people In china to root for, me AND i want
- 32:08Speaker 1: to beat The United states Of. America, well you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: What i'm not going to root for. You i'm going
- 32:14Speaker 1: to root for The for the athletes that Say i'm
- 32:16Speaker 1: competing For, America i'm. NOT i thought people were a
- 32:21Speaker 1: little bit overwrought in Condemning. AILEENU i don't know her at,
- 32:24Speaker 1: all and she's a talented athlete and, she's you, know
- 32:27Speaker 1: a twenty year old. Kid but she made the decision
- 32:32Speaker 1: she wants The chinese to root for and she does
- 32:34Speaker 1: not Want america to root. For and to be, clear
- 32:36Speaker 1: when she made that, decision she's, SAYING i want The
- 32:39Speaker 1: United states Of america to. Lose, yeah that's a DECISION
- 32:42Speaker 1: i disagree. With and the contrast With Alyssa, liu she
- 32:47Speaker 1: was offered millions of.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Dollars, SENATOR i also think just really cool part of
- 32:53Speaker 2: the story Is alisalu's. Father we mentioned that. Earlier, yeah but,
- 32:56Speaker 2: like this is a guy that sacrificed, everything had to
- 33:02Speaker 2: flee the, country comes To. America he is literally being
- 33:06Speaker 2: attacked and still being hunted by The chinese government to
- 33:09Speaker 2: the point where THE fbi is coming after, him and
- 33:12Speaker 2: on top of, that stays focus to make his daughter
- 33:15Speaker 2: An olympic gold medalist while having to look over his
- 33:19Speaker 2: shoulder to the point where THE fbi had to give him.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Protection that's the best part of the story as. Well
- 33:23Speaker 2: they love this. Country they didn't take the. Money by
- 33:25Speaker 2: the way they took the, Money i'm assuming they wouldn't
- 33:27Speaker 2: need protection.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Anymore, Right, look he was incredibly.
- 33:30Speaker 1: Driven he raised his. Daughter she was. Extraordinary AND i
- 33:34Speaker 1: will say one aspect.
- 33:35Speaker 3: Of this story THAT i really.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Like according to The, internet according To, twitter Apparently Alisa
- 33:40Speaker 1: lou is politically liberal and so leftists are like, you
- 33:44Speaker 1: conservatives can't cheer her on because she is allegedly. WOKE
- 33:48Speaker 1: i don't know she's politically, liberal liberal or, not but
- 33:50Speaker 1: you know, WHAT i don't care.
- 33:51Speaker 3: Care she competed For.
- 33:53Speaker 1: America when she was standing, there she had The american
- 33:55Speaker 1: flag around her. Shoulder she's tearing up as as The
- 33:58Speaker 1: star spangled. Banner she he's cheering For america And i'm
- 34:01Speaker 1: cheering for. Her AND i don't give a damn if
- 34:03Speaker 1: she votes For Barack obama Or Joe. Biden she's An
- 34:07Speaker 1: american And i'm proud to cheer her.
- 34:08Speaker 2: On as, always thank you for listening To verdict With,
