- 0:36Travelers and Monster Catchers abound, I'm Stella
- 0:38Ferris and you have crash landed on the Monster
- 0:41Catchers Journal podcast, where stories from
- 0:43the edge of the known universe are brought straight
- 0:45to your ears. Every glyph has a story, and today
- 0:49might hit closer to your heart than most, because
- 0:53today is about fear, and its name is Nightfall.
- 0:56It started with a flicker, when we were investigating
- 1:00some strange lunar interference in the looming
- 1:02expanse. A barren stretch of cracked obsidian
- 1:06tiles that hum at night, like they're remembering
- 1:09a song long forgotten. Luna, Zina, and I had
- 1:13each gone separate ways to scan for anomalies.
- 1:17My glyphid started vibrating in a low, slow rhythm,
- 1:20almost like a heartbeat. That's when I saw him.
- 1:24A floating silver moon cracked down the center,
- 1:28wrapped tightly in a barbed wire whip that shimmered
- 1:31in the dark like a warning, like he was warning
- 1:35us to turn and run the other direction. He hovered
- 1:41there, trembling, but he didn't lash out until
- 1:43I got too close, and when he did, it wasn't to
- 1:46attack me. He was frightening, or he was frightened
- 1:50and fighting off everything else, including himself.
- 1:53We've only just started our magic synchronization
- 1:56classes at the Academy. Professor Oren warned
- 1:59me, you're not just learning spells, stealth
- 2:02affairs. You're learning how to harmonize with
- 2:05your glyph, even though I wasn't even in his
- 2:07class. Their emotions, instincts, and essence,
- 2:10unfortunately my abilities are still basic. All
- 2:14I can do is heal and shield my glyphs, which
- 2:16is what we're supposed to do anyways, but no
- 2:20offense, no offense, no flashy magic, just protection
- 2:25and patchwork, so when Nightfraw cracks the sky
- 2:29with his whip, and started panicking. I did the
- 2:32only thing I knew how to do. I showed it myself
- 2:36in Orabique. Then I projected calm, reassurance
- 2:42and pressure. Because Nightfall wasn't angry,
- 2:45he was terrified. He lashes out when he's scared.
- 2:49The whip isn't a weapon, it's his barrier. It's
- 2:52his heartbeat. And he wasn't just scared of us,
- 2:55he was scared of being seen. Senna approached
- 2:58next, her glyph, Ignizura, glowing behind her.
- 3:02She said, he's not a threat. He's a glyph born
- 3:05of anxiety, like a lunar phantom stuck in a panic
- 3:09attack. She was right. He stayed with him all
- 3:13night, or we stayed with him all night. Every
- 3:15time he twitched, I cast my shielding spell.
- 3:19Every time he calmed, I channeled healing over
- 3:23and over again, until slowly he started to trust
- 3:26me. He let me get close, he let the whip fall
- 3:29slack, and then he allowed himself to be caught.
- 3:33Now Nightfall lives in the darkest corner of
- 3:36my sanctuary room. He's quiet, reserved, still
- 3:39jumpy, but less so every day. When storms come
- 3:44on, alarms go off at the academy. He curls up
- 3:48under my desk and waits for the fear to pass.
- 3:51And every time I shield him, every time I heal
- 3:53the scratches, I know I'm not the strongest in
- 3:56the class, not yet. But sometimes being the one
- 3:59who protects, being the calm in the chaos is
- 4:03exactly what a glyph -like nightfall needs. So,
- 4:11just be the calm in the storm for them. So, it's
- 4:15a new day now. And... Yesterday was a trying
- 4:20and honestly annoying battle. The kind that drains
- 4:24your energy and tests your patience, more than
- 4:26your skill. But I made it through, and by the
- 4:30end of it, Nightfall was mine. Today I've decided
- 4:33to leave Glowfish behind and give some of my
- 4:36older glyphs a much needed rest. They've been
- 4:39through enough, so this is my current team. Orabique,
- 4:43Centronaut, Shadowclaw, Luma Pup, Pankin, and
- 4:47Nightfall. Not a bad lineup if I do say so myself,
- 4:52and today it was Nightfall's turn to shine. This
- 4:55morning I walked into the Luan Academy Battle
- 4:59Courtyard. Open sky, obsidian tiles warmed by
- 5:03twin suns, a perfect place to see how well my
- 5:06new moon -shaped glyph handled pressure without
- 5:09crumbling under it. The match was a simple trial,
- 5:13one of the Academy's rotating sparring matches.
- 5:17I volunteered Nightfall without hesitation. This
- 5:19would be his first real test of all three moves.
- 5:23Whip, which was just a clean snap of that barbed
- 5:26wire. Live wire, which was the same move but
- 5:30charged with energy and emotion, sending a burst
- 5:33of electrical feedback. And the last one, Dark
- 5:37Side, a taunt that taps into fear, projecting
- 5:40Nightfall's own anxieties into his enemies. He
- 5:44may be shy, but he doesn't pull punches. The
- 5:48opponent, a sneering upperclassman named Ray
- 5:52Relo, he used a glyph called Brasshorn. Part
- 5:57steel, part wind. Looks like a bull made of turbine
- 6:01parts and bad decisions. The match started fast.
- 6:07Relo barked commands and Brasshorn charged nightfall.
- 6:12Nightfall. Whip, I said. The barbed wire cracked
- 6:18forward, not flashy, but fast. The whip scraped
- 6:21Brashorn's plating, leaving a smoke line and
- 6:23making it hesitate. Round one, not bad. Next,
- 6:27I ordered live wire. Nightfall glowed faintly
- 6:30as energy surged into the whip. Static curled
- 6:34off of him like a storm cloud waking up. Now,
- 6:38the whip struck again, and this time it crackled.
- 6:41The impact sent Brashorn reeling. electricity
- 6:45surging through its chassis. Relo actually took
- 6:50a step back, like he felt it too, but the brass
- 6:53horn charged again, harder, madder, faster. I
- 6:56had to act quick. Dark side! Nightfall stilled,
- 7:00he dimmed, he pulsed once twice than nothing,
- 7:04a total eclipse. Brass horn slowed, confused,
- 7:07tusk lowering, and then Nightfall's fear, his
- 7:11true fear poured out. A silent sidekick wave
- 7:14of isolation lost that feeling like the sky is
- 7:18too big and you're too small to matter. I felt
- 7:20it, too, in the quiet corners of space. Brassworm
- 7:24buckled. It didn't faint, but it backed off,
- 7:27shaken. Match end it! Victory award it! Brillo
- 7:30stormed off. Nightfall floated to me. Still,
- 7:34quiet, but calmer. He'd faced his fears and made
- 7:37them into weapons. I know some trainers like
- 7:45explosive powers or flashy finishers, but me?
- 7:49I've learned to appreciate subtle strength. The
- 7:52kind that whispers instead of shouts. Nightfall's
- 7:55not perfect. He still flinches when loud glyphs
- 7:58pass by. He curls up when thunder rolls. But
- 8:02he showed me today that courage isn't being afraid.
- 8:07Or unafraid, sorry. It's fighting while scared
- 8:10out of your mind. And that's why he belongs on
- 8:12my team. And today, it came to the hardest part
- 8:17of this whole journey, telling Professor Orion
- 8:21and Dr. Lang that I had caught this glyph. To
- 8:26be fair, Dr. Lang was never the problem. The
- 8:29man lives for the catch. You could bring him
- 8:31a sentient tumbleweed with one tooth, and he'd
- 8:36start cataloging it before you could even say
- 8:38wild encounter. But Professor Orion, on the other
- 8:41hand, he was going to be mad. As usual, Orion
- 8:46was hunched over his storm maps, looking like
- 8:50he hadn't blinked in ten hours. I didn't wait
- 8:52for him to speak. I caught another one. His pen
- 8:56stopped. Let me guess, he said, not looking up.
- 9:00You skipped your enchantment lab again. Ouch.
- 9:05Before I could answer, Dr. Lang stepped in from
- 9:08the side door, eyes lit like it was his birthday
- 9:11season. Let me see, he beamed. Hands already
- 9:14outstretched like a kid begging for a toy. Tell
- 9:17me it's the lunar distortion anomaly from the
- 9:20looming expanse. I handed over the glyphid. Name's
- 9:24nightfall. Moon body. Barbed wire whip. Defense
- 9:28type. Taunt move called dark side. Leng's grin
- 9:33was nuclear. Oran's frown deepened. Stelliferous,
- 9:39he said, finally turning to me. Do you even remember
- 9:42the last three spells we practiced in class?"
- 9:44I opened my mouth, but all that came out was,
- 9:47I shielded Nightfall in battle. I healed him.
- 9:52I kept him safe. That's basic level one magic,
- 9:57Stella Ferris, he snapped. You were supposed
- 10:00to be learning glyph -channeling synchronization
- 10:02techniques. You can't just wander the planet
- 10:05collecting emotionally unstable glyphs and hope
- 10:08they save the day. I clenched my fist. I wanted
- 10:11to yell. Instead I said, catching glyphs has
- 10:13been my dream since I was three. I don't skip
- 10:16class because I don't care. I skip class because
- 10:20I care too much. Every day I spend in a lecture
- 10:23is a day I'm not out there finding someone who
- 10:26needs me, someone like Nightfall. That shut him
- 10:30up. Ling looked between us like a kid caught
- 10:33between divorced parents fighting over custody
- 10:35of a moon rock. Then he said, with respect, Orion.
- 10:39She may not be mastering fireballs and flight
- 10:42runes, but her synchronization is stronger than
- 10:45most of our top students. I've seen the logs."
- 10:49Orian stared at me, then finally muttered, fine,
- 10:52log the glyph, but you'd better show up for tomorrow's
- 10:55advanced synchronization class. You're wasting
- 10:57your own potential. He turned back to his charts.
- 11:01Lang gave me a wink and handed me back Nightfall's
- 11:04glyphid. Ignore him, the moon's lucky to have
- 11:07you. I couldn't understand why Professor Orion
- 11:10was so mad. I was in Higate's class for magic,
- 11:16not his. It's not like I was skipping. I'd show
- 11:20up, participate, even ask questions when I didn't
- 11:24know what I was doing. Okay, so I'd only come
- 11:30to Orion a few times for extra help with spellcasting,
- 11:33but that didn't mean I wasn't trying. But the
- 11:36way he looked at me today... You'd think I'd
- 11:39blown up the whole academy with a miscast spell.
- 11:43You're wasting your potential, he said, not even
- 11:45bothering to look at me. Just kept scribbling
- 11:48on that old cracked journal of his. I crossed
- 11:50my arms. All I did was ask for help. No, Stella
- 11:55Ferris. He snapped, finally meeting my eyes.
- 12:02You only ever ask for help when something goes
- 12:05wrong. You treat magic like a side quest. That
- 12:08stung. I never even wanted to be in magic classes,
- 12:11I muttered. You're the one who pushed me into
- 12:14them. He paused along heavy silence filled the
- 12:18room. And now that I've caught nightfall, I said,
- 12:21the anger bubbling up in my chest, it's just
- 12:24more lectures. I thought maybe, maybe you'd be
- 12:27proud that you'd actually see what I've been
- 12:31doing out there. But no, it's still not enough.
- 12:35It's always you're wasting your potential. Orion
- 12:39shook his head slowly, because I see what you
- 12:41could become, Stella Ferris. You're not just
- 12:45a glyph chaser, you're something more. But you
- 12:49keep refusing to believe that. I'm not refusing,
- 12:52I said sharply. I just don't want to become what
- 12:55you think I should be. That shut him up for a
- 12:58second. I turned away. I caught nightfall. I
- 13:02survived the storm scar Delta. I've held my own
- 13:06with some of the strongest glyphs on the - planet
- 13:09Nibiru, and you still act like I'm a dropout
- 13:13with a glow stick." I took a deep breath, and
- 13:17at it, I didn't come here to be torn down. I
- 13:20came here because I wanted to get better. He
- 13:22didn't answer, so I left. And honestly, I wasn't
- 13:26sure if I'd ever come back to him for help again.
- 13:31A few days had passed since our last argument.
- 13:34I'd made my decision and dropped all the magic
- 13:36classes. I was tired of being told I wasn't enough.
- 13:40I wanted to focus on what I loved, monster catching.
- 13:44I was in the sanctuary tinkering with some new
- 13:47gear when there was a knock at the door. I didn't
- 13:50need to guess, I knew who it was. I opened it
- 13:53and sure enough there stood Professor Orion.
- 13:55Oh, it's you, I said flatly, rolling my eyes
- 14:00as I reached to close the door again. But his
- 14:02hand shot out, catching the frame before it shut.
- 14:05I know I'm not your favorite person in the world,
- 14:08he said, his tone softer than usual, but I can't
- 14:11just stand by and watch you walk away from magic
- 14:14classes. You can't force me to do something I
- 14:17don't want to do. I snapped, pushing the door
- 14:20again, but he held it firm but calm. I'm not
- 14:23trying to force you, he said. I just... I think
- 14:27you're making a mistake. That's why I told Higate
- 14:30you weren't quitting. I think it would be good
- 14:33for you, even if you don't see it right now."
- 14:35I crossed my arms, leaning against the doorway.
- 14:38You keep saying Glyphcatching isn't enough. Why
- 14:41do you hate it so much anyway? He was quiet for
- 14:44a moment, then he let out a sigh, and looked
- 14:47down at his feet. To tell you the truth, Deliferous,
- 14:51he paused, as if the words were hard to say.
- 14:55I was never good at, or as good as you. Not even
- 14:59close. I tried to be a monster catcher once,
- 15:02too. But I was terrible at it. I failed more
- 15:06times than I can count. People laughed, teased
- 15:09me. I blinked I'd never seen him like this before,
- 15:14vulnerable. I was put in magic classes because
- 15:18I couldn't keep up in the field, he continued,
- 15:21and I hated it at first. But then I realized
- 15:23something. Catching glyphs is just one part of
- 15:27the picture. The other half is understanding
- 15:29the magic that connects us to them, that protects
- 15:32us, that keeps them from destroying us. He looked
- 15:35up at me, eyes tired but honest. I don't hate
- 15:39monster catching, Stella Ferris. I'm just scared
- 15:42you'll make the same mistakes I did thinking
- 15:44catching is everything, until the day it isn't
- 15:47enough. The silence between us felt heavy. Maybe
- 15:51for the first time I understood why he'd been
- 15:54so harsh. It wasn't about control. It was fear,
- 15:58and maybe, maybe something like hope. There's
- 16:04something strange about hearing your hero admit
- 16:07they felled at the very thing you thought they
- 16:09mastered. I stood there, arms still crossed,
- 16:14heart softening, because Orion wasn't yelling,
- 16:17he wasn't lecturing, he was just telling the
- 16:19truth. I stepped back from the door just far
- 16:22enough to let him in. Five minutes, I said, that's
- 16:26all you get. He gave me a nod and stepped inside
- 16:29like he was walking into a temple he hadn't earned
- 16:32access to in years. Nightfall hovered in the
- 16:35far corner, his silver moon -bodied dim but watchful.
- 16:40Orion glanced around, this place, it suits you.
- 16:45I raised a brow, but messy and full of monsters?
- 16:49No, he said with a small smile, alive. We sat
- 16:54down at the low table I kept for sorting glyphid
- 16:57charts. I flicked a switch and the holograms
- 17:01flared up. My full team displayed a rotating
- 17:05ring, or a beak, zentronaut, shadowclaw, lumapup,
- 17:11pancan, and nightfall. You've built something
- 17:13real here, he said. But you're hitting a limit,
- 17:16Stella Ferris, not because you lack heart. You've
- 17:20got more... of that than most of the faculty
- 17:22combined, but because raw instinct only takes
- 17:26you so far. I didn't argue, not this time. He
- 17:30reached into his coat and pulled out a small
- 17:32shimmering stone, obsidian core, etched with
- 17:35violet runes, a soul -linked shard. I want you
- 17:40to take this, he said. It's a synchronization
- 17:43amplifier. It doesn't make magic easier, it just
- 17:46makes it louder, sharper. If you're even slightly
- 17:49out of sync with your glyph, it'll backfire.
- 17:53I hesitate it sounds dangerous. He smirked. That's
- 17:57the point. You learn to listen better when the
- 17:59stakes are higher. I reached out slowly and took
- 18:02it. The shard warm against my palm. Nightfall
- 18:06drifted a little closer. Curious. It'll come
- 18:10or I'll come to class I said, but I'm not giving
- 18:14up filled work. I wouldn't expect you to, Oren,"
- 18:17replied, to try not to vanish for weeks at a
- 18:20time without checking in. You've got people here
- 18:22who care about you. That caught me off guard
- 18:25more than anything. He stood and made his way
- 18:27to the door, but paused before opening it. I
- 18:31mean what meant what I said, Stella Ferris, he
- 18:33added, without turning around. You're not just
- 18:36a glyph catcher. You're something more. You don't
- 18:38see it yet, but I do. And with that, he left.
- 18:45I looked at the soul ink shard in my hand, watched
- 18:49how Nightfall hovered over it for a moment, then
- 18:53nodded like he knew this wasn't the end of something.
- 18:56It was just the beginning. I tucked the shard
- 18:59into my satchel and whispered to Nightfall, looks
- 19:02like we've got more work to do. He flicked with
- 19:05a soft moonlight in response, and for the first
- 19:09time in a long time I felt like maybe, just maybe,
- 19:12I was exactly where I needed to be. Well, Nightfall,
- 19:19do you think maybe there might be a reason why
- 19:24Orion wanted me to change to the magic classes?
- 19:30Maybe he had something that he was right about.
- 19:35Like maybe he was right about magic. Maybe I
- 19:38should learn magic synchronization so that me
- 19:41and my glyphs, including you, can fight a little
- 19:45better together. What do you think? Nightfall
- 19:53rubbed his face against my hand in response,
- 19:57and I knew that that meant that he agreed with
- 19:59Professor Orion. That he thought that there was
- 20:02more to it than just the catch. And you know
- 20:11what? Sometimes the people who push us hardest
- 20:13aren't trying to hold us back. They're trying
- 20:16to push us forward. And sometimes the greatest
- 20:18catchers don't come from force, they come from
- 20:21understanding. Next time on the Monster Catcher's
- 20:24Journal, we enter the mirrored reef, where reflections
- 20:28whisper secrets and nothing is as it seems. Until
- 20:32then, stay curious, stay kind, and keep catching,
- 20:36because next time, we're going to be catching
- 20:38Daybreak.
