- 1:01Speaker 1: always tell people's time to stop reading other people's stories
- 1:04Speaker 1: and start living your own story. People always talk about
- 1:07Speaker 1: their purpose or gift. If you have a gift, leave
- 1:09Speaker 1: with your gifts and don't let your friends, family, or
- 1:12Speaker 1: co workers stop you from planning or living your dreams.

- 1:50Speaker 1: me just subscribe. Who this fantastic voice is, my guests,
- 1:54Speaker 1: is Jessica Myers. She's a real estate developer and entrepreneur
- 1:58Speaker 1: as an investor in hotel owner. Hear me now, she's
- 2:01Speaker 1: a black female owner of hotels. You know we always
- 2:04Speaker 1: checking the hotel. She owns hotels transactional transacting over thirty
- 2:09Speaker 1: million dollars in real estate assets. She's known as the
- 2:12Speaker 1: deal Maker as Capital m k R. Her portfolio includes
- 2:17Speaker 1: hotel properties and developments in Georgia, Indiana, Oklahoma, and the Bahamas.
- 2:23Speaker 1: No one wants to be a boss, but everyone needs
- 2:26Speaker 1: a coach. And that's what we're talking about on today's
- 2:28Speaker 1: show with Jessica Myers. She's helping working with professionals, giving
- 2:31Speaker 1: them clarity to their visions, to connect with their internal GPS,
- 2:35Speaker 1: to provide a clear route to achieve their dreams. Please
- 2:39Speaker 1: work on the Mind of making Conversations Masterclass Jessica Myers
- 2:42Speaker 1: The deal Maker. How are you doing, Jessica, Oh, I
- 2:45Speaker 1: stay living in a dream? How are you pretty good?
- 2:48Speaker 1: You know, it's great to have you on the show
- 2:50Speaker 1: because it's about there's so many people want to be successful,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but they don't have a plan. And I think that
- 2:58Speaker 1: the thing about it is that we can say that
- 3:00Speaker 1: real easy a plan because that sounds simple. It sounds
- 3:04Speaker 1: but that's not simple because sometimes we can say we
- 3:07Speaker 1: want something, but it just may not be available for
- 3:11Speaker 1: you to achieve at that time. So now you used
- 3:13Speaker 1: to use the word GPS, which we all know is
- 3:15Speaker 1: a popular term for trying to find out where you
- 3:18Speaker 1: need to go. You put in an address, it tells
- 3:20Speaker 1: you where you're supposed to go. But sometimes you know that, Jessica,
- 3:24Speaker 1: you put in an address and it don't take you
- 3:26Speaker 1: where you supposed to go. Yeah, sometimes, like you said,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you have ways and it might take you through the
- 3:32Speaker 1: back route and next thing you know, you're like, where
- 3:35Speaker 1: am I? Where did it drop me off? And that's
- 3:37Speaker 1: the funny part because, like you said, I'm a real
- 3:40Speaker 1: estate entrepreneur and developer and a lot of people come
- 3:43Speaker 1: to me like I just want to get in all
- 3:44Speaker 1: the real estate. I just want to get involved. I
- 3:46Speaker 1: just want to get started. And it's like if we
- 3:48Speaker 1: miss the basic steps of putting in the address first,
- 3:51Speaker 1: it's almost like gassing up a Rose Royce and saying,
- 3:54Speaker 1: go where are you going to? Where are you wandering?
- 3:58Speaker 1: How can you measure your success and where you are?
- 4:01Speaker 1: So if I say, I don't know, if you remember
- 4:03Speaker 1: going to Triple A where you would sit down and
- 4:05Speaker 1: they literally will map out okay, like you're going to
- 4:09Speaker 1: New York. The first thing they're going to do is
- 4:11Speaker 1: understand where you're coming from, where you're starting from and
- 4:15Speaker 1: so you know now how to guide yourself to where
- 4:19Speaker 1: you're looking to go. Most times people just like to
- 4:22Speaker 1: jump in and do and that can oftentimes lend you
- 4:25Speaker 1: in circles. And you know, if you've ever seen people
- 4:28Speaker 1: or hurt people, I'm going through a middle a crisis.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I don't know where I am. I've just been spending
- 4:32Speaker 1: and spending and turning wheels because you haven't set a destination.
- 4:36Speaker 1: That's the power of setting a goal. That's the power
- 4:39Speaker 1: of like you said, there's no ways without a destination.
- 4:43Speaker 1: There's no uber pickup without there declaring where you're going.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And that's one of the things that I want people
- 4:49Speaker 1: to understand as they go to build their dreams, as
- 4:51Speaker 1: they go to build generational wealth, that you have to
- 4:54Speaker 1: start off at least with a goal to give you
- 4:56Speaker 1: direction of where to head to so that you can
- 4:59Speaker 1: start making you journey. We know it's interesting because she
- 5:02Speaker 1: said triple A And she said it's because they used
- 5:05Speaker 1: to give out these booklets called trip ticks. And I
- 5:08Speaker 1: used to be a stand up comedian, so I used
- 5:10Speaker 1: to always go in there, Jessica and I say, I'm
- 5:12Speaker 1: going from Houston to Orlando. They sit down there they
- 5:15Speaker 1: put together. They go and put all these different little
- 5:18Speaker 1: maps and they put them all together, and they just
- 5:20Speaker 1: and you just flip a page and tell you the
- 5:22Speaker 1: gas station to tell you the either is called a
- 5:23Speaker 1: trip tick, and it was very detailed. That same trip
- 5:27Speaker 1: trip tick. Now you have and become electronic, and you
- 5:31Speaker 1: have it, whether it's in Wave or whether it's in
- 5:33Speaker 1: Google of Horizon. There's so many different forms of versions
- 5:36Speaker 1: of these trip ticks that have not becoming electronics. But
- 5:40Speaker 1: the great thing about it is that sometimes I always
- 5:43Speaker 1: tell you got to trust yourself, because back in the
- 5:46Speaker 1: day before we had GPS, somebody would tell me, basically, Richard,
- 5:51Speaker 1: come visit me, and they give me directions and they
- 5:54Speaker 1: give me some landmarks, and then I would get there
- 5:57Speaker 1: because I got the address. And so I bring that
- 6:00Speaker 1: up in our conversation Jessica, because so many people they're
- 6:04Speaker 1: so caught up on being told what to do and
- 6:07Speaker 1: not trusting understanding the landmarks of opportunities when they present themselves.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Talk to me, yes, oh yeah, I definitely, I definitely
- 6:16Speaker 1: agree like you says about trusting your gut and trusting
- 6:19Speaker 1: your instinct. But one of the most impactful books that
- 6:22Speaker 1: I've read that help with that is Thinking Grow Rich.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Thinking Grow Rich is a beautiful book that's written by
- 6:29Speaker 1: Napoleon Hill that follows a lot of successful individuals and
- 6:33Speaker 1: understanding what is the key to success? After studying hundreds
- 6:37Speaker 1: and hundreds of successful people, like what is the key?
- 6:41Speaker 1: And it starts with tapping into your burning desire? And
- 6:44Speaker 1: once you connect with burning desire, that's what helps. Like
- 6:47Speaker 1: you said, to give you that internal GPS that whether
- 6:50Speaker 1: you have the instructions or not, you have a direction
- 6:54Speaker 1: or directive of where you're looking to go. Which know
- 6:57Speaker 1: which direction? Because a lot of times when it boils
- 7:01Speaker 1: down to it is not that people are lost. People
- 7:04Speaker 1: are afraid. When you boil down to the deal blockers,
- 7:08Speaker 1: they're afraid to dream. A lot of times your dream
- 7:11Speaker 1: is so big it scares you and it's like, well
- 7:13Speaker 1: where do I start? How do I get started? When
- 7:15Speaker 1: you understanding you tap into your burning desire, When you
- 7:18Speaker 1: understand that, that's that internal GPS that whether you have
- 7:22Speaker 1: the directions or not, you have a fervor to accomplish
- 7:25Speaker 1: and achieve your dreams and your visions. And how do
- 7:28Speaker 1: I know this? Because so many people that I talk
- 7:31Speaker 1: to you know that are talking about the dream and
- 7:33Speaker 1: their vision. You ask them how long they've had it.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It's not something that they just thought about yesterday and
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's like, oh, this is what I want to do. No.
- 7:41Speaker 1: A lot of times, this burning desire has been boiling
- 7:45Speaker 1: for years and they don't know how to start. They
- 7:47Speaker 1: don't know where to get it out. But they just
- 7:49Speaker 1: know that the desire lies inside and that's where it's
- 7:52Speaker 1: important to write it out, to understand what that burning
- 7:55Speaker 1: desire is and take immediate action towards getting towards your goal.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And the goal is always it's the manager. There's always
- 8:04Speaker 1: tell people about you have to be selfish when you're
- 8:07Speaker 1: looking for your goal. And a lot of people use
- 8:08Speaker 1: the word selfish as a negative, but I think that
- 8:12Speaker 1: I use the word selfishness as a word of being focused.
- 8:14Speaker 1: You have to be focused on your dreams and you
- 8:16Speaker 1: can't dv it. You have to put the time in
- 8:18Speaker 1: if that's what you want to do. You can't have excuses.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And that's what I mean when I use the word selfish.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You have to really understand that it becomes the top
- 8:26Speaker 1: priority of what you want to do in your life.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So when people come to you deal maker. I'm gonna
- 8:30Speaker 1: just put it out there. That's a that's a moniker.
- 8:32Speaker 1: She's the deal maker. I'm talking to Jessica Myers. You know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: she's properties all over this country, including the Bahamas. When
- 8:40Speaker 1: you take on the responsibilities but bponsibility saying that you
- 8:44Speaker 1: are a deal maker, now that's a that's that's a
- 8:49Speaker 1: that's a whole lot to say and a whole lot
- 8:52Speaker 1: of responsibility tied to it. Why are you bold enough?
- 8:56Speaker 1: Why are you bold enough to say that? Because I
- 9:00Speaker 1: understand that of all the deals that I've done from
- 9:02Speaker 1: the fifteen thousand dollars you know shack that I bought
- 9:06Speaker 1: when I first got in a real estate investing to
- 9:09Speaker 1: the nineteen million dollar portfolio, I genuinely do an autopsy
- 9:14Speaker 1: on my success, like what is the thing that made
- 9:17Speaker 1: it work? What is the thing that made it not work?
- 9:19Speaker 1: And what can I do strategically better to get to
- 9:22Speaker 1: move forward? And one of the common things that I
- 9:25Speaker 1: found in every single deal was my three part formula,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and that was having the opportunity itself, the skill set
- 9:33Speaker 1: and know how of what to do with set opportunity,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and the capital to execute on the opportunity. Every single deal.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I realized had these three things in common. So that's
- 9:44Speaker 1: when I started to when I started to talk with
- 9:46Speaker 1: people who don't have a navigation. I don't know where
- 9:48Speaker 1: to go, I don't know where to start, And I say, Okay, well,
- 9:50Speaker 1: which one of the three do you have? And that
- 9:53Speaker 1: will help me determine which of the other two that
- 9:55Speaker 1: you need? And once you know that's what I mean
- 9:58Speaker 1: by the internal GPS, because one of the things when
- 10:00Speaker 1: you set up to go to New York, they don't
- 10:02Speaker 1: just say Okay, cool, you're going to start in New York. No,
- 10:05Speaker 1: they where are you coming from? Where is it that
- 10:08Speaker 1: your start? Where are you in that process to get
- 10:12Speaker 1: to where you desire to go? And so that's where
- 10:14Speaker 1: I break down, and where are you in the process
- 10:16Speaker 1: of the three part formula? Do you have the opportunity
- 10:19Speaker 1: and you need someone with the skill set and know
- 10:21Speaker 1: how in the capitol? Do you have the capital and
- 10:23Speaker 1: you're looking for the opportunity in the skill set? Do
- 10:25Speaker 1: you have the skill set and you need someone with
- 10:28Speaker 1: the opportunity in the capital, Like, those are the three
- 10:31Speaker 1: things that help make any deal go. And when I
- 10:35Speaker 1: coach and speak with entrepreneurs that are looking to get
- 10:38Speaker 1: started and they don't know where to go. I often
- 10:40Speaker 1: ask them what of the three part formula do they have?
- 10:43Speaker 1: And that's how I'm able to connect with what other
- 10:46Speaker 1: elements they need breaking it down into that formula, and
- 10:50Speaker 1: like you said, with the focus to achieve it and
- 10:53Speaker 1: obtain it, anything is possible. From the fifteen thousand square
- 10:57Speaker 1: foot home that I started my real estate career to
- 10:59Speaker 1: the nineteen million dollars portfolio, it's all been thanks to
- 11:03Speaker 1: that three part formula. Wow. But it also means that
- 11:07Speaker 1: it's something that you had to you know, as they say,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you had to work on, you know, like you said,
- 11:12Speaker 1: you know, being able to say this is what work
- 11:14Speaker 1: and then started putting that aside and saying this part
- 11:17Speaker 1: of I can be consistent with this, because that's the
- 11:20Speaker 1: word I always tell people. It's two words that I
- 11:23Speaker 1: live my life about consistency and communication. If you're consistent,
- 11:27Speaker 1: then then you be able to have any level of communication.
- 11:30Speaker 1: But if you inconsistent, you will never be able to
- 11:33Speaker 1: communicate because nobody to trust you. And so when I
- 11:36Speaker 1: hear you talk Jessica Myers the deal Maker, that means
- 11:40Speaker 1: that you're saying to me Rashan, I'm consistent and what
- 11:43Speaker 1: I'm saying, so when people come to me, I might
- 11:47Speaker 1: when I communicate I have a history of success, because
- 11:50Speaker 1: that that resume means something. Because it's a lot of
- 11:53Speaker 1: people jump out there and saying there there they are
- 11:55Speaker 1: financial advisors, they tell you the real estate experts, but
- 11:59Speaker 1: don't have the resume. May exactly they don't. They don't
- 12:05Speaker 1: have the receipts to back it up. It's the theory
- 12:07Speaker 1: and the knowledge without the application. And as we know,
- 12:10Speaker 1: knowledge is power and it's best known through experience. It's
- 12:14Speaker 1: it's crazy because I went to school actually for journalism,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so I didn't go to school for real estate. So
- 12:19Speaker 1: to experience is what helped me to prune and come
- 12:23Speaker 1: up with that formula, a three part formula. It's like,
- 12:26Speaker 1: how do I extract what work out of my process
- 12:30Speaker 1: because a lot of times when you do something, especially
- 12:32Speaker 1: as an entrepreneur, you feel like you're you're like Um
- 12:35Speaker 1: Einstein or Thomas Edison where you're trying to figure out
- 12:40Speaker 1: this equation and having a blueprint from success is what
- 12:47Speaker 1: helps you to get there faster. Because Einstein spent hours
- 12:51Speaker 1: and hours and hours going over UM what I think
- 12:54Speaker 1: it was the thousandth of light bulb that wound up working,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but once you gave up at nine hundred and ninety six,
- 13:04Speaker 1: So that's where you talk about the consistency, where you
- 13:07Speaker 1: talk about keep going in the path and the journey,
- 13:10Speaker 1: because that's where it unfolds, even the three part formula.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Once you put it in your life, you see how
- 13:17Speaker 1: it works, see how it fits, See how it helps
- 13:19Speaker 1: you to get to execution and success, and that's where
- 13:23Speaker 1: the true magic comes and staying focused to the goal,
- 13:27Speaker 1: to the dream, to the vision and watching it come
- 13:30Speaker 1: to fruition. You have a book called A Real Estate Mastery,
- 13:34Speaker 1: And before we go to break, tell everybody importance of
- 13:37Speaker 1: that book and why did you write it? I oh,
- 13:40Speaker 1: my gosh, so many people economy? How do I get
- 13:43Speaker 1: started in real estate? And I found myself repeating the
- 13:45Speaker 1: same thing over and over, and then that's what I realized, Like,
- 13:51Speaker 1: it's really a lot of people have the same issue
- 13:54Speaker 1: and the same problem. And so when you find yourself
- 13:56Speaker 1: repeating it, and that's how you start to develop the
- 13:59Speaker 1: process and you're like, wait, let me put this in
- 14:01Speaker 1: a book. Let me put this in a way that
- 14:04Speaker 1: breaks it down and explains it in ataining way because
- 14:07Speaker 1: there have been a lot of things that you know,
- 14:09Speaker 1: I've been through in my career that you know, for one,
- 14:13Speaker 1: starting out with drugs, a contractor with selling drugs in
- 14:17Speaker 1: my house when I was selling it, and it's like, oh, well,
- 14:20Speaker 1: what do you do when you're in those type situations? Well,
- 14:23Speaker 1: that's why I break down in the book, like how
- 14:25Speaker 1: to maintain your contractors, how to you know, protect yourself
- 14:30Speaker 1: against things that can happen that are wrong. And I
- 14:33Speaker 1: really lay out the process of the autopsy in my
- 14:37Speaker 1: book Real Estate Master not only how you can get started,
- 14:40Speaker 1: but how you can protect yourself against you know, a
- 14:42Speaker 1: lot of things that come up like a contractor selling
- 14:45Speaker 1: drugs out of your house. Wow, we'll be right back
- 14:48Speaker 1: with more. We're gonna talk about the cash Flow Game Night,
- 14:51Speaker 1: which is come in the first week in April. Five
- 14:54Speaker 1: day challenge to get started and email ust to stay
- 14:57Speaker 1: connected with real estate. So we'll be right back, going
- 15:00Speaker 1: to wear I'm talking to the deal maker aka see
- 15:03Speaker 1: usually you say Jessica Myers aka deal maker, I'm gonna
- 15:06Speaker 1: say deal maker aka Jessica Myers. Be right back with
- 15:09Speaker 1: money Making Conversations Master Class hosted about the One Element
- 15:11Speaker 1: Rashaan McDonald. Don't go to wear Please, don't go anywhere.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more money Making Conversations Masterclass.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Let me tell you about the money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 15:22Speaker 1: hosted by Rushan McDonald. People always talk about their purpose
- 15:26Speaker 1: or gifts. If you have a gift, lead with your
- 15:29Speaker 1: gifts and don't let your friends, family, or co workers
- 15:31Speaker 1: stop you from planning or living your dreams. The interviews
- 15:35Speaker 1: and information on his show are for everybody. Don't let
- 15:38Speaker 1: change scare you. He's here to educate you because it's
- 15:41Speaker 1: time to put your dreams into action. The show, money
- 15:44Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass interviews CEOs, small business owners, influencers and celebrities.
- 15:51Speaker 1: They share financial and career success tips with Rushan McDonald
- 15:54Speaker 1: which you can only hear in the Money Making Conversations
- 15:57Speaker 1: Masterclass show. Welcome back to the Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 16:02Speaker 1: hosted by rash Sean McDonald. As you know, I am
- 16:05Speaker 1: the host of Money Making Conversations Master Class. I'm talking
- 16:08Speaker 1: to the deal Maker aka Jessica Myers and Jessica you
- 16:13Speaker 1: know real estate, they always you know the rists I
- 16:15Speaker 1: was born, you know I always heard they were God
- 16:18Speaker 1: ain't making no no more land. This is it. God
- 16:22Speaker 1: ain't making it. So so we have black people who
- 16:25Speaker 1: tend to rent, and white people in general, they buy,
- 16:28Speaker 1: they buy homes, they buy properties, and so they have
- 16:31Speaker 1: equity in their lives and so and so we don't
- 16:35Speaker 1: have equity. We don't have power, which in turn affects
- 16:37Speaker 1: our credit. So this is a big story that we're
- 16:40Speaker 1: talking about when we're talking to you about opportunities to
- 16:44Speaker 1: be able to achieve success for people of color. And
- 16:47Speaker 1: so when you walk out there, you are a woman
- 16:50Speaker 1: of color, and then you talk about properties, you know,
- 16:54Speaker 1: and that's what I always you know, we kind of
- 16:57Speaker 1: trivialize the whole process. I always tell people, you know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: we used to buying jewelry, we used to buying clothes,
- 17:03Speaker 1: We used to buying shoes, and then we get up
- 17:06Speaker 1: there and buys a car, you know, and then then
- 17:10Speaker 1: if we're fortunate, we might buy a house. Now we
- 17:12Speaker 1: used start buying an actual office building, we start buying
- 17:17Speaker 1: an actual hotel, resorts. Now I can't even put my
- 17:24Speaker 1: head around the fact that you've got properties in Indianapolis,
- 17:28Speaker 1: you got properties in you know, Scottsburg, Indiana. You've got
- 17:33Speaker 1: properties in the Arena, Oklahoma, right here in development, in Atlanta, Georgia,
- 17:39Speaker 1: in the Bahamas. How do you why do you wrap
- 17:42Speaker 1: your head around the fact that you, Jessica Myers is
- 17:47Speaker 1: a hotel owner. Well, for one, it's a team effort.
- 17:51Speaker 1: Anything that I do is always a team that is surrounding.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But once once you understand the power of focus um,
- 17:58Speaker 1: setting your GPS on the target, that's how you build
- 18:02Speaker 1: people that will follow. Just as you saw in Forrest Gump,
- 18:05Speaker 1: he just took off running and everybody's like, I don't
- 18:06Speaker 1: know what we're running too, but we were running. We're
- 18:08Speaker 1: running behind him. And that's what it's about, leading the charge,
- 18:12Speaker 1: setting the destination. I set out to do one thousand doors,
- 18:15Speaker 1: and how do you do so well? Doing it in
- 18:18Speaker 1: one door at a time can be rather slow, But
- 18:21Speaker 1: now the commercial aspect of it, getting into getting into
- 18:24Speaker 1: the hotel space allows you to exponentially get Like when
- 18:28Speaker 1: we got our home two Sweets by Hilton, we immediately
- 18:31Speaker 1: added eighty five doors to our portfolio. When we picked
- 18:34Speaker 1: up the second package, the Stay Bridge and the Hampton
- 18:38Speaker 1: End that's in Indiana, that added two hundred plus doors
- 18:41Speaker 1: to our portfolio. So it's almost like you start to
- 18:45Speaker 1: build a team that's knowledgeable, that has that skill set
- 18:48Speaker 1: and know how that helps you be exponential about achieving
- 18:52Speaker 1: your vision and your dream. Because even what you spoke
- 18:55Speaker 1: to just now, a lot of it was liabilities, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 1: as far as things that are not income producing versus
- 19:03Speaker 1: looking at assets which are income producing. And that is
- 19:07Speaker 1: the power of leverage ownership, the access to income producing
- 19:13Speaker 1: assets that even after you've paid for them or paid
- 19:17Speaker 1: them down, they continue to provide cash flow so that
- 19:20Speaker 1: you can build your portfolio. Because one of the main
- 19:23Speaker 1: things that you talk to anyone, I don't care what
- 19:25Speaker 1: your dream is. I don't care if it's to be
- 19:26Speaker 1: a shoemaker, if it's to be a designer, if it's
- 19:29Speaker 1: to be a knitter, of whatever your vision is. As
- 19:33Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, one of the main things you're going to
- 19:36Speaker 1: need as capital. And when you go to get capital,
- 19:39Speaker 1: and a lot of people in our community don't have
- 19:41Speaker 1: trust funds, they don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 19:44Speaker 1: lined up, so they're dependent upon how to get capital.
- 19:48Speaker 1: The most people think if I trade more time for money,
- 19:51Speaker 1: then I can get enough capital to achieve my dream.
- 19:54Speaker 1: But what I'm saying is ownership of real estate allows
- 19:58Speaker 1: you to leverage the equity then get capital so that
- 20:02Speaker 1: you can fund your dream. So even for people who
- 20:05Speaker 1: I was like, I don't want to be involved a
- 20:06Speaker 1: real estate I don't like it, da da da coal,
- 20:08Speaker 1: But just have ownership of an asset of some capacity
- 20:13Speaker 1: so that you can then leverage that ownership into the
- 20:16Speaker 1: asset to get the capital funding that you need even
- 20:19Speaker 1: for your business. Now, if your business is real estate,
- 20:21Speaker 1: you can leverage that and get into bigger plays, which
- 20:24Speaker 1: is what I've done as a hotel owner. But you
- 20:27Speaker 1: can do that to fund your dream. But it's all
- 20:30Speaker 1: about getting in the game and getting access to ownership equity,
- 20:36Speaker 1: you know, being able to borrow on your ownership, being
- 20:40Speaker 1: able to build credit, being able to build credibility, being
- 20:43Speaker 1: able to have a clear understanding of respect within the
- 20:47Speaker 1: business community, being a woman of color, just a person
- 20:52Speaker 1: of color in general. To even walk into the hotel
- 20:56Speaker 1: a hospitality business, how were you able to do that? Well?
- 21:01Speaker 1: For one strategic partnership, That's what I say about the
- 21:04Speaker 1: skill set. And then know how understanding who what players
- 21:08Speaker 1: to put on your team, so you achieve optimal success.
- 21:11Speaker 1: My girl, you know, she would understanding what I was
- 21:14Speaker 1: doing in the single family space as far as bringing
- 21:16Speaker 1: together the capital, the opportunity, in the skill set and
- 21:19Speaker 1: know how. And she was like, you know, if you
- 21:20Speaker 1: bring that to the commercial arena, you can go a
- 21:23Speaker 1: lot further. And she was the one divan actually had
- 21:26Speaker 1: the experience from working at the front desk at the
- 21:30Speaker 1: Hyatt all the way up to managing assets and portfolios
- 21:34Speaker 1: worth billions of dollars for a lot of these overseas investors.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And she was telling me they do the same thing
- 21:41Speaker 1: pretty much. Hotels own less than ten percent of the
- 21:44Speaker 1: inventory that they actually put their name on, So that
- 21:46Speaker 1: means the Marriotts of the Hiltons, all of those they
- 21:50Speaker 1: operate like franchise businesses that allow you to buy into
- 21:54Speaker 1: the brand standard and have ownership into the building. And
- 21:58Speaker 1: once I understood that, I was like, that's like real estate,
- 22:01Speaker 1: just like what I do in the single family space,
- 22:03Speaker 1: except understanding on the commercial side, it's a similar concept.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Bringing together the opportunity itself. That's the hotel, that's the land,
- 22:13Speaker 1: that's the what do I do the skill set and
- 22:15Speaker 1: then know how, that's how do I make this play,
- 22:18Speaker 1: how do I bring it all together all of the pieces.
- 22:20Speaker 1: That's where you have the experts, the broker that helps
- 22:23Speaker 1: to bring the opportunity, someone to help analyze the opportunity
- 22:26Speaker 1: to make sure that it's a win win because you
- 22:28Speaker 1: built your criteria. Those are the skill set and then
- 22:31Speaker 1: know how that you will need on your team to
- 22:33Speaker 1: make it happen. And then having the capital to execute.
- 22:36Speaker 1: With the clear vision and understanding the skill set that's
- 22:40Speaker 1: there to support the vision, people will come and write checks.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And that's where we created a hedge fund to help
- 22:47Speaker 1: receive the funds of those within our community that believe
- 22:50Speaker 1: in the vision. And through that hedge fund is where
- 22:53Speaker 1: we're able to purchase these assets. Wow, tell me about
- 22:57Speaker 1: the five day challenge to get started. The five day challenge,
- 23:01Speaker 1: like I said, when people want to get started with
- 23:03Speaker 1: their dreaming and vision, and it was like, look, just
- 23:05Speaker 1: take it to the goal, just take me to real estate.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I just want to get started. But one of the
- 23:08Speaker 1: things that you find is the deal blockers, the deal
- 23:11Speaker 1: that's that fear that you're going to deal with. Like oh,
- 23:14Speaker 1: because even for me before the hotel, you know that
- 23:17Speaker 1: that Hilton Hotel that we acquired when we first got
- 23:20Speaker 1: into the commercial industry. That was an eight point three
- 23:24Speaker 1: million dollars transaction that it was the largest transaction that
- 23:28Speaker 1: I've been a part of up until that point. So
- 23:32Speaker 1: that was very you talk about fear, it was like,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I don't think I've done anything over two million dollars
- 23:38Speaker 1: up to that point. You know, we sold single family
- 23:40Speaker 1: homes at one point eight million and one point four
- 23:43Speaker 1: and one point six, but never in the commercial space
- 23:46Speaker 1: over two million, So that there was a lot of
- 23:49Speaker 1: fear around can I get started, should I do it?
- 23:54Speaker 1: What if it doesn't work? And a lot of people
- 23:56Speaker 1: get an analysis paralysis and they're like, oh my gosh,
- 23:59Speaker 1: they're fierce. Fifles them from progress. And so not only
- 24:02Speaker 1: do you have fear, you have procrastination. Procrastination comes from
- 24:07Speaker 1: actually being a frame and you keep putting it off,
- 24:09Speaker 1: but really you're just scared. You're just it's like, I
- 24:12Speaker 1: need to get started. So one of the things in
- 24:14Speaker 1: the challenge is how do we overcome that fear? How
- 24:17Speaker 1: do we get urgency about achieving our goal which boasts
- 24:20Speaker 1: confidence and what we're looking to achieve. And through that
- 24:22Speaker 1: five day challenge, it's looking to change the mindset to
- 24:26Speaker 1: get you to achieving even greater into the deals that
- 24:30Speaker 1: you want to do. And the deals is being able
- 24:34Speaker 1: to not say what you can't do, but position is
- 24:37Speaker 1: do what you are capable of doing. And because that's
- 24:39Speaker 1: what it all comes to. It's like, I remember when
- 24:41Speaker 1: I bought my very first call fear in buying that
- 24:44Speaker 1: first car, you know, looking at the notes three years
- 24:47Speaker 1: or four you whatever your payment plans that you set
- 24:50Speaker 1: up to buy that car or at least that vehicle,
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's like, well, what's gonna happen? May if I lose
- 24:54Speaker 1: my job? You can't even think it. You have to
- 24:55Speaker 1: throw all those doubts of what you can do. You
- 24:58Speaker 1: have to push those out the window, out your mind,
- 25:01Speaker 1: because that will stop you from achieving your dreams. A
- 25:04Speaker 1: lot of people do understand that that they stop themselves
- 25:07Speaker 1: a lot of time from pursuing their own personal happiness
- 25:10Speaker 1: because they get into the mindset of the what if.
- 25:13Speaker 1: The what if will stop you more than anything any
- 25:16Speaker 1: who creates the what else you because you can ignore
- 25:20Speaker 1: the what ifs to come from other people, You can
- 25:23Speaker 1: turn it down, and really the what ifs are crafted
- 25:25Speaker 1: by past experiences, so you're you're thinking about. You know,
- 25:29Speaker 1: if you saw somebody, you know, you saw something that
- 25:33Speaker 1: happened to someone else, or you're listening to the news,
- 25:35Speaker 1: it can impact your input and your output of what
- 25:40Speaker 1: you want for your dream by listening to someone else.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And that's why you, like you said, you got to
- 25:44Speaker 1: put the bonders on and stay focused, stay consistent and
- 25:47Speaker 1: what you're building, because if you're in someone else's lane
- 25:50Speaker 1: worried about what they got going on, of course it'll
- 25:52Speaker 1: make you're afraid. But y'all aren up to the same circumstances.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Like you know, there are things in my life that
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm not a mom yet, so me having to plan
- 26:02Speaker 1: for you know, like hey, I can't do this or
- 26:05Speaker 1: I can't do that. Like I have a different set
- 26:07Speaker 1: of circumstances that someone that may be a mom and
- 26:09Speaker 1: they have to think about being a parent and what
- 26:12Speaker 1: goes into their circumstances. So my circumstances in yours. That's
- 26:16Speaker 1: why I say go by the formula and apply that
- 26:19Speaker 1: formula in your life, because that's what's going to help
- 26:22Speaker 1: you understand your plan. Because I can't tell everybody what
- 26:26Speaker 1: to do based on my circumstances, but I can tell
- 26:28Speaker 1: you who I became that helped me to achieve the
- 26:31Speaker 1: results that I did, And that's important that you say that. Now,
- 26:35Speaker 1: when is the cash flow game? Not this coming first
- 26:37Speaker 1: week in April Cashlganna. I'm so excited for one. Robert
- 26:41Speaker 1: Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad has been one of
- 26:44Speaker 1: the most pivotal books that I've ever read in my life.
- 26:47Speaker 1: For one, it teaches you about the rat race that
- 26:51Speaker 1: I don't know. Sometimes you don't even know that you're in.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And so I was like, you run, run, run, run, run,
- 26:56Speaker 1: and you're just like, wait, why am I not going anywhere?
- 26:58Speaker 1: Because you're trading time for money and there is no
- 27:01Speaker 1: way to outrun trading time for money. So you have
- 27:04Speaker 1: to understand the concept of allowing your money to work
- 27:07Speaker 1: for you. And he's put in this nice game that
- 27:10Speaker 1: helps you. It's almost like Monopoly meets life, where you
- 27:15Speaker 1: all take on a persona of you know, are you
- 27:18Speaker 1: a police, chief, a doctor. You have bills, but the
- 27:21Speaker 1: name of the game is to allow your passive income
- 27:24Speaker 1: to exceed your total expenses. So everyone in there has
- 27:28Speaker 1: total expenses and all of that, and you start out
- 27:30Speaker 1: a zero and you have to go around and around
- 27:33Speaker 1: and round the rat race and pull for opportunities until
- 27:37Speaker 1: you find your way to allow your passive income to
- 27:39Speaker 1: exceed your total expenses, and that's how you get out
- 27:42Speaker 1: of the rat race. Playing this game single handily is
- 27:46Speaker 1: what launched my career into real estate and allowing me
- 27:49Speaker 1: to own my own time. Because really, I know we
- 27:52Speaker 1: were talking about goals, they're talking about deal making and
- 27:54Speaker 1: all of that, but it all boils down to owning
- 27:57Speaker 1: your time. When I was in corporate America and I
- 28:00Speaker 1: love to travel, I wanted to go on a trip
- 28:03Speaker 1: and I used up on my vacation days and the
- 28:05Speaker 1: HR director was like, Oh, don't worry, you can just
- 28:07Speaker 1: borrow from next year. And when I realized that I
- 28:10Speaker 1: had to borrow time from my employer, I realized I
- 28:14Speaker 1: didn't own my time and that was a problem for me.
- 28:18Speaker 1: And that's where I had to go back and was like, wait,
- 28:20Speaker 1: we had to fix this. And understanding the game of
- 28:22Speaker 1: cash flow is allowing your money to work for you
- 28:25Speaker 1: instead of you working for it. And so we're creating
- 28:28Speaker 1: this experience where you can get immersive learning where and
- 28:32Speaker 1: not sitting down on a lecture, but you're actually playing
- 28:35Speaker 1: in a game, and real life application to this game
- 28:39Speaker 1: is what helped to change my life. And that's what
- 28:41Speaker 1: I believe This Game Night is targeted at helping others
- 28:44Speaker 1: change theirs and speaking to the deal maker. That's Jessica Meyers.
- 28:48Speaker 1: She's a real estate developer and entrepreneur. As an investor
- 28:51Speaker 1: in hotel owner, she's transacted and properties right there, over
- 28:55Speaker 1: thirty million dollars in real estate assets. As one talks
- 28:58Speaker 1: about properties, were talking about Georgia, were talking about Indiana,
- 29:01Speaker 1: We're talking about Oklahoma, We're talking about the Bahamas. And
- 29:05Speaker 1: she always says no one wants a boss, but everyone
- 29:07Speaker 1: needs a coach, and that's what she does. As we
- 29:09Speaker 1: close out this interview, just talk everybody about what you
- 29:12Speaker 1: do as a brand builder, what you do as a dealmaker.
- 29:16Speaker 1: So as a dealmaker, I make it all come together
- 29:19Speaker 1: and I help people push past their fears of how
- 29:22Speaker 1: to make it happen in their life. We come together,
- 29:25Speaker 1: we devise a roadmap of success, and we work on
- 29:29Speaker 1: executable steps that get you to your dream. And even
- 29:33Speaker 1: if you don't have it, I help coach and train
- 29:37Speaker 1: of how to look for those experts that have it
- 29:39Speaker 1: that you can plug in and you can make the
- 29:41Speaker 1: formula work for you in your life. So hit me up.
- 29:45Speaker 1: It's Jessica Myers dot com. I s Jessica Myers dot
- 29:50Speaker 1: com is the best way to reach me. Apply to
- 29:52Speaker 1: work with me, and that's how we can connect and
- 29:54Speaker 1: make it happen. She's the dealmaker, jesse Man, Jessica Myers.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Let me get that straight. And in the future when
- 30:02Speaker 1: we talk about these opportunities, please come back. All right.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I know that a great speaker. You know you convinced
- 30:09Speaker 1: me you want me to change my life and go
- 30:12Speaker 1: into the real estate and just pursuing opportunities of being great.
- 30:15Speaker 1: But again, thank you for taking the time the coming
- 30:17Speaker 1: on Money Making Conversations master Class. I really appreciate you,

- 31:27Speaker 1: and live musical performances. Come on now, please work on
- 31:31Speaker 1: the Money Making Conversation master Glass. The one and only
- 31:34Speaker 1: Doctor Walter Scott Metcalf. How are you doing, sir, I'm
- 31:37Speaker 1: doing great, Doctor Listen McDonald, thank you for having me.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I appreciates with the live musical performances. Doctor, but we're
- 31:43Speaker 1: gonna get right on the end to it. We'll get
- 31:45Speaker 1: right on the end to it. Will you be introduced
- 31:48Speaker 1: as doctor Metcalf for the live performers down in or
- 31:51Speaker 1: Land on March two in the fifth or how is
- 31:53Speaker 1: the introduction gonna be set up? I think the way
- 31:56Speaker 1: because my wife is gonna introduce me, so I think
- 31:58Speaker 1: she gonna introduced me to the world as Doc Scott
- 32:00Speaker 1: Scot what. I probably broke up a little bit that
- 32:03Speaker 1: Doc what you introduced you to the world as who
- 32:06Speaker 1: Doc Scott? Doc Scott? I love that Doc Scott's now now? Now?
- 32:11Speaker 1: Has this been something that I kind of like missed
- 32:14Speaker 1: along the way in the series here because all it
- 32:17Speaker 1: was just just, you know, because we know you work out,
- 32:20Speaker 1: canin siate you know you you know you're motivated, you
- 32:22Speaker 1: know your your entrepreneur. What did the musical side of
- 32:26Speaker 1: you start to say? You know something, I gotta start
- 32:28Speaker 1: showcasing this. I know it started with the song loss,
- 32:30Speaker 1: which was dedicated to your wife, But how did that
- 32:33Speaker 1: come about? You know? I think the musical side of
- 32:36Speaker 1: me just woke back up. I had it. I always
- 32:39Speaker 1: had it as a kid, you know, I was. I
- 32:42Speaker 1: remember taking piano lessons as a child, and uh, when
- 32:45Speaker 1: I got in seventh grade, I remember over hearing my wife,
- 32:47Speaker 1: my mom talking to to the leader of a church choir,
- 32:51Speaker 1: and she was saying his instructor said that he'll be
- 32:54Speaker 1: ready to take over a church in about two years
- 32:56Speaker 1: if if he keep on learning and playing like he did. Sir.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I quit after that. I said, I'm not gonna be
- 33:02Speaker 1: playing for on the church, ya. They take up too
- 33:04Speaker 1: much of my time. So so you're trying to say,
- 33:09Speaker 1: you're trying to say the church killed your you know,
- 33:10Speaker 1: your musical dreams. Don't say that. Don't say that. Don't
- 33:13Speaker 1: say that. Hey, I already was on the usher board,
- 33:15Speaker 1: you know, and the junior choir, and I was, I
- 33:17Speaker 1: was already in church two days a week, and I said, man,
- 33:19Speaker 1: they're gonna have me in church three, four or five
- 33:21Speaker 1: days a week, you know, in practicing with three different choirs.
- 33:23Speaker 1: You know how it is absolutely absolutely absolutely you know,
- 33:26Speaker 1: it's really interesting because you know, as I always tell
- 33:29Speaker 1: people that that, you know, between the ages of eighteen
- 33:32Speaker 1: and twenty four, you know, we are kind of like, um,
- 33:36Speaker 1: we're kind of like you know, ambitious, you know, we
- 33:38Speaker 1: are we we we see so many opportunities and nobody
- 33:42Speaker 1: can tell us anything. We'll we'll chase those dreams. And
- 33:45Speaker 1: I always tell people what you do between eighteen and
- 33:47Speaker 1: twenty four. When you get your forties, fifteenes and sixties,
- 33:50Speaker 1: that's what you start really making your money off of,
- 33:53Speaker 1: you know, those dreams, those desires, those early passions. You know.
- 33:58Speaker 1: So when I when I when I read about this
- 34:00Speaker 1: and I saw I heard the song, and now this
- 34:02Speaker 1: concert and we're going, I'm talking to doctor Scott Walter,
- 34:05Speaker 1: Scott Metcalf, he's one of the stars from Bravos TV's
- 34:08Speaker 1: married to medicine, and we're talking about this singing career
- 34:11Speaker 1: right now. And we're going to talk about this medical
- 34:13Speaker 1: career and this entrepreneurship because that's important because part of
- 34:16Speaker 1: your brand, it's part of your development. But when you
- 34:18Speaker 1: see people break out of these sides that you don't see,
- 34:21Speaker 1: it's important to know that that sometimes you have to
- 34:25Speaker 1: follow your dreams. That's why I always tell people, don't
- 34:27Speaker 1: let nobody tell you what you can't do, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 1: because people will tell you that. So when you start
- 34:32Speaker 1: pursuing this aspect, the naysayers came out, correct, doctor Metcalf,
- 34:37Speaker 1: Oh for sure, for sure, they says came out, family, friends,
- 34:41Speaker 1: you know, and definitely social media. You know. The naysayers
- 34:44Speaker 1: always waiting for you. They don't even have to come out.
- 34:46Speaker 1: They sitting there waiting to click this like. So that's
- 34:49Speaker 1: how that's how that goes them. So how do you
- 34:52Speaker 1: overcome that? How do you? Because that's what this show
- 34:54Speaker 1: is about because of the fact that, you know, really
- 34:57Speaker 1: social media. A lot of people do understand this about
- 34:59Speaker 1: social media. You know, a like or dislike, a dislike
- 35:02Speaker 1: can be a form of bully, and especially when you
- 35:05Speaker 1: tie negative comment to it, and then it's tied to
- 35:08Speaker 1: people you don't even know. You know, that's the that's
- 35:10Speaker 1: the wild part about social media. You know, you can
- 35:13Speaker 1: get emotional highs from the likes, but then the negative
- 35:18Speaker 1: comments and the dislikes or the ugly emojis can also
- 35:22Speaker 1: be emotionally down for you. How do you in a
- 35:26Speaker 1: person who is a professional? You're a professional, you you
- 35:30Speaker 1: with the school you've earned, a professional were respected, respected degree.
- 35:34Speaker 1: How do you deal with the fact that sometimes people
- 35:38Speaker 1: kind of like disrespect you and actually sometimes don't even
- 35:42Speaker 1: believe you're a real doctor. You know, I guess thick
- 35:47Speaker 1: skin and intelligence hopefully keeps me away from all the negativity.
- 35:50Speaker 1: You know, because one, you're not gonna scoop down, You're
- 35:53Speaker 1: not level that other people on the right, like gives
- 35:56Speaker 1: me a disrespectful comment, it's just easy to block, delete
- 35:59Speaker 1: and one with my life and and you know say
- 36:02Speaker 1: they never existed basically, So so I think this is
- 36:06Speaker 1: a level of having thick skin. You know, I'm the
- 36:08Speaker 1: youngest of tenids and sticks and stones, you know, and
- 36:12Speaker 1: and you know, I you know, the battles I've been
- 36:15Speaker 1: through my life. Negative words could never hurt me nothing
- 36:18Speaker 1: from social media. And my wife already told me when
- 36:20Speaker 1: we first got on the show, don't you know, she
- 36:23Speaker 1: knew more about reality TV than me. I knew absolutely
- 36:26Speaker 1: nothing about it, didn't care about you know, and actually
- 36:30Speaker 1: you know, refused to participate, you know, the first year
- 36:33Speaker 1: that they offer it, and so um so she basically
- 36:36Speaker 1: told me, like you just gotta not read the comments,
- 36:38Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Like I said that that's
- 36:41Speaker 1: the bully area. That's the area of where they they
- 36:44Speaker 1: they attack you on your on your on your video,
- 36:48Speaker 1: on your video when the comments there can like be
- 36:51Speaker 1: depressing and demoralizing because all you're doing is living your
- 36:55Speaker 1: dream and you're sharing it. And that's what you were
- 36:57Speaker 1: doing when you posted your video about your song, your
- 37:01Speaker 1: your lyrics and all that it was just sharing your
- 37:04Speaker 1: gift that God gave you. That's gonna be real about this.
- 37:06Speaker 1: This is a gift. I can't sing, doctor Scott, I
- 37:09Speaker 1: can't see so so you you ain't ever gonna get
- 37:13Speaker 1: nothing negative from me. But there are people out there
- 37:15Speaker 1: just like me who can't sing, but making comments though,
- 37:19Speaker 1: oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. And when
- 37:22Speaker 1: you're dealing with that, and you got the opportunity now
- 37:25Speaker 1: on March twenty fifth, how I'm much gonna tell y'all. Look,
- 37:27Speaker 1: it's so almost sold out, okay, because it's all always
- 37:30Speaker 1: social media. Oh my god. He can't believe the tickets
- 37:32Speaker 1: are moving that fast, but he don't if I'm If
- 37:35Speaker 1: I'm correct, this is who you on the show with
- 37:37Speaker 1: just some of the stars. Goodye mob correct, Fantasia correct,
- 37:41Speaker 1: baby Face correct, Yes, Life Jenny's correct. Okay. Now now
- 37:49Speaker 1: the next question of them go, are you nervous? You
- 37:54Speaker 1: know what? Right now, I'm not nervous. One nephews on
- 37:59Speaker 1: the song with me. You know, he's been in entertainment
- 38:01Speaker 1: since he was probably eight years old. He traveled the country,
- 38:05Speaker 1: how here Devion Uh. He traveled the country playing young
- 38:08Speaker 1: Marvin Gay and my brother Marvin. Uh huh. This young
- 38:11Speaker 1: man and he went to Berkeley School of Music. So
- 38:14Speaker 1: this young man literally has me practicing with them. We
- 38:18Speaker 1: got a video this. I think it's gonna be very
- 38:19Speaker 1: interesting to see this whole journey, um, you know, in
- 38:22Speaker 1: the near future. But so we're we're documenting everything. But
- 38:26Speaker 1: this young man has me in there with them while
- 38:28Speaker 1: they're doing dance routines. And I'm I'm like, goody, marvel
- 38:32Speaker 1: on this will No, I don't dance no more. I'm
- 38:33Speaker 1: gonna staying to the side and you know, hype up
- 38:35Speaker 1: the crowd and maybe maybe move side to side, you
- 38:37Speaker 1: know what. But you know, far as the movements the
- 38:39Speaker 1: new young guys are doing, they got they got a
- 38:41Speaker 1: routine together. Okay, so you said that you you don't
- 38:44Speaker 1: have no steps, that's what? No two steps? Two steps?
- 38:51Speaker 1: Come on now you Oh you're gonna be old school.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Now you're gonna be old school. Just stand in one place.
- 38:56Speaker 1: You're not gonna You're not gonna break out with no
- 38:59Speaker 1: four tops, no temptation moves, none of that. Nope, Nope,
- 39:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be some side to side. No not. I'm
- 39:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna give them something, Okay, I'm talking to doctor
- 39:09Speaker 1: Walter Scott, and they're gonna be a little bit surprised. Yeah,
- 39:12Speaker 1: I'm talking to doctor Walter Scott Metcalf from Bravos TV's
- 39:15Speaker 1: Marriage to Medicine. It's a two part conversation I'm having
- 39:18Speaker 1: with you today because of the fact that you know
- 39:20Speaker 1: as an artist and I'm calling your artist because of
- 39:23Speaker 1: the fact that you're going on stage. People have told
- 39:26Speaker 1: you based on your celebrity status, based on your your
- 39:31Speaker 1: your your talent. It's saying that they're gonna put you
- 39:33Speaker 1: on stage with a baby Face, on that same stage
- 39:37Speaker 1: with Goodymove, on that same stage with Fantasia, on that
- 39:41Speaker 1: same stage with Life Jen. And I know all these people,
- 39:44Speaker 1: all these people are just you know, they got they
- 39:46Speaker 1: got an audience. And guess what, You're gonna have a
- 39:48Speaker 1: fan base coming to see you too, doctor Scott. How
- 39:52Speaker 1: do you feel about all this? You know what, I'm excited.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I'm excited that this part of my life. You know,
- 39:58Speaker 1: like I said, I love and enjoyed would being a
- 40:00Speaker 1: doctor and um, but I'm just happy that my love
- 40:03Speaker 1: for music woke back up inning, you know. And how
- 40:06Speaker 1: would you said, walk back? How did they wake back
- 40:08Speaker 1: up at your house. Well, I had, Um, I had
- 40:12Speaker 1: my nephew Javier, and doing piano lessons for my kids.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Okay here at my home, and um, they be in there,
- 40:19Speaker 1: and then you know, we did them on Sunday. So
- 40:21Speaker 1: after after they finished the lessons, we go in there
- 40:24Speaker 1: and and you know, get on the piano and we
- 40:26Speaker 1: start singing old church songs because my kids have never
- 40:28Speaker 1: heard the old good Baptist church song absoluted and and
- 40:32Speaker 1: so we get in there, we start singing some mojos,
- 40:35Speaker 1: acting silly, and then um, another friend sent me a
- 40:39Speaker 1: beat and it just captivated me. And when Javier was
- 40:42Speaker 1: leaving out, I had my phone. I had recorded the
- 40:45Speaker 1: beat on my phone and I did a little voice
- 40:47Speaker 1: memo and I said, Javier, I like this and can
- 40:49Speaker 1: you can you like go home and singing hook to me?
- 40:51Speaker 1: Can you just go like lost lost, so lost without you?
- 40:56Speaker 1: And you know? And I said, can you do that
- 40:58Speaker 1: hook for me? And then he came back to the
- 41:00Speaker 1: neighbor with an amazing hook and I said, oh, okay,
- 41:03Speaker 1: but let me, let me, let me get on the
- 41:04Speaker 1: hook and let me write some rhymes with this, and
- 41:06Speaker 1: uh and there you go. Next thing, you know, called
- 41:09Speaker 1: a friend and we were up in the ashwork studios,
- 41:14Speaker 1: all based on just a beat, and then you had
- 41:18Speaker 1: the talent to come in and create the hook, because
- 41:20Speaker 1: you gotta have a hook and the song like you
- 41:21Speaker 1: got you know that hook, you know, great song. I
- 41:24Speaker 1: always remember that, the famous of Harold mel winning the
- 41:28Speaker 1: Blue notes miss You come on Teddy Pendegrad. Oh you
- 41:33Speaker 1: know if Teddy Pendegrass wasn't in the background singing that
- 41:39Speaker 1: hook to miss you and it's not a song. Oh no,
- 41:43Speaker 1: you're absolutely correct, absolutely correct. And that's why it's the
- 41:47Speaker 1: beauty of doing these things and doing these things with
- 41:50Speaker 1: a with a dream. And we're talking about the dreamer.
- 41:52Speaker 1: We're talking about the person who who sits around and
- 41:56Speaker 1: has looked at his life like saying, we're referencing here,
- 41:58Speaker 1: doctor Scott, Doctor Walter Scott Metcalf. You know, youngers of
- 42:02Speaker 1: ten kids you're born to raise into Michigan correct, yes, sir,
- 42:07Speaker 1: And as they say that the cold state at Michigan
- 42:09Speaker 1: State grad when we come back, we're gonna continue this conversation.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I just wanted to start this whole opening half of
- 42:15Speaker 1: the show about his career as a as a live
- 42:18Speaker 1: musical performers. When we come back, we're gonna talk about
- 42:21Speaker 1: why did he get into medicine, what did the entrepreneurial side,
- 42:24Speaker 1: why did he move to Atlanta this side of the business,
- 42:27Speaker 1: and how has been one of the stars on marriage,
- 42:30Speaker 1: the medicine affected him professionally, and how he's had to
- 42:34Speaker 1: live and deal with this new fame notoriety, because there's
- 42:38Speaker 1: a difference in being a doctor who's unknown and then
- 42:40Speaker 1: a doctor who's famous. Be right back with more money

- 43:37Speaker 1: Rushan McDonald. Hi, welcome back to Money Making Conversations Masterclasses.
- 43:41Speaker 1: You're host rus Sean McDonald. I'm talking to we just
- 43:44Speaker 1: you've just heard it doctor Scott, the one and only
- 43:48Speaker 1: Doctor Walter Scott medcam as we move in your life,
- 43:51Speaker 1: being a person who the youngest of ten kids, can
- 43:54Speaker 1: I ask what type of careers are lifestyle? Did your
- 43:58Speaker 1: other siblings have? Did they motivate ate you to pursue
- 44:00Speaker 1: a career an educational career, sir? You know, being the youngest,
- 44:04Speaker 1: they motivated me. I had a very supportive family. They
- 44:06Speaker 1: motivated me and supported me and everything that I've done.
- 44:09Speaker 1: You know, I'm the only one that chose medicine. But
- 44:12Speaker 1: you know we have I haven't an educator and counselor
- 44:15Speaker 1: both for pH ds. I have a flight sister that
- 44:20Speaker 1: was a flight attendant. To have a brother that's an engineer. Uh,
- 44:23Speaker 1: two brothers that retired from the factory. You know, we
- 44:26Speaker 1: were in Flint, Michigan. Student that was that was you know,
- 44:28Speaker 1: they were in the factories. McDonald dared one sister that
- 44:32Speaker 1: retired from the factory. One sister that got an advanced
- 44:35Speaker 1: degree as well and went into business and worked for GM. So,
- 44:38Speaker 1: you know, pretty much, my mother's stressed the education. She's
- 44:41Speaker 1: you know, and she's she definitely stressed excellent in us.
- 44:44Speaker 1: And she was in that era where you know, she
- 44:46Speaker 1: moved that moved up here from the South. You know,
- 44:49Speaker 1: she was a valedictorian of her class and so she
- 44:53Speaker 1: wasn't on me, and so she made sure her kids
- 44:54Speaker 1: wasn't no dummies. And and she her she she said,
- 44:58Speaker 1: because of having kids that that kind of killed her
- 45:02Speaker 1: dreams and of going to law school. And so she
- 45:05Speaker 1: never she never finished her undergraduate degree herself. But you know,
- 45:08Speaker 1: was super successful as a mom and just just overall great,
- 45:12Speaker 1: beautiful woman. Well you know that like my Momla, I
- 45:16Speaker 1: come a big family too, you know, six sisters and
- 45:18Speaker 1: two brothers. So I I came and my mom was
- 45:22Speaker 1: just like your mom. You know, she graded away from
- 45:23Speaker 1: my high school very smart. But high school, you know,
- 45:27Speaker 1: high school was the highest level of educations that she achieved.
- 45:30Speaker 1: But you know, I myself, I just knew I just
- 45:33Speaker 1: wanted to be pursue a life that was different from
- 45:36Speaker 1: where I was living because I lived in the neighborhood
- 45:40Speaker 1: you know, well, you know, my parents was in the
- 45:43Speaker 1: hood Fifth Ward in Houston, Texas, and then we moved
- 45:46Speaker 1: to the northeast side of Houston, Texas. Basically, I just
- 45:50Speaker 1: moved from black people who were struggling to black people
- 45:52Speaker 1: who wasn't struggling as much. Okay, So, and I knew
- 45:56Speaker 1: I didn't like either lifestyle, and so I was motivated
- 45:59Speaker 1: to see what was out there because basically my whole
- 46:02Speaker 1: life doctor metcap All, I saw away black people my
- 46:05Speaker 1: whole life, and so I didn't even know from a
- 46:08Speaker 1: standpoint of what that white world looked like until I
- 46:12Speaker 1: went to college. And that opened my eyes. When you
- 46:15Speaker 1: start making that transition, tell us your background and then
- 46:17Speaker 1: also transitioning from that high school world into college. Okay, Well, mom,
- 46:24Speaker 1: after my father passed when I was five, my mother, um,
- 46:27Speaker 1: it was six kids left at home, and so my
- 46:29Speaker 1: mother actually decided to leave the city of Flint and
- 46:34Speaker 1: we moved. We moved to a place where her and
- 46:36Speaker 1: my dad used to vacation, which used to be called
- 46:38Speaker 1: the even of the North if you ever heard of Idawa, Michigan.
- 46:41Speaker 1: So we moved and grew up in Ottawa, Idawall, Michigan, Baldwin, Michigan.
- 46:46Speaker 1: And so that was a pretty diverse community. But it
- 46:49Speaker 1: was probably second to Ben Harvard, the forest community in
- 46:53Speaker 1: miss h and Uh. But you know, but nonetheless, like
- 46:56Speaker 1: I said, great mom, she always worked, she always provided,
- 47:00Speaker 1: which was awesome. And so I was. I had a
- 47:03Speaker 1: really diverse education and diverse friend group growing up. And
- 47:09Speaker 1: so when I went to Michigan State, there was still
- 47:12Speaker 1: a culture shock of coming into a classroom of three
- 47:14Speaker 1: hundred people but none of us. But but there was
- 47:19Speaker 1: there was you know, the diversity was was not anything
- 47:22Speaker 1: that I had to get you know, adjusted to, you know,
- 47:26Speaker 1: if I right. So so basically you're saying, like, okay, Rashan,
- 47:31Speaker 1: I was, I had that diverse education. If I stayed
- 47:33Speaker 1: in Flint had been a different story. But when she
- 47:35Speaker 1: moved me and allowed me to adjust, and I would
- 47:39Speaker 1: understand another side of life and how to communicate with
- 47:42Speaker 1: another side of life. So winter Michigan State, other than
- 47:45Speaker 1: the massive campus of over thirty five thousand students. You
- 47:49Speaker 1: know that's my adjustment, correct, right? Correct? You know and
- 47:54Speaker 1: coming and you know, like I grew up in the
- 47:56Speaker 1: like the small town. It was not even the McDonald's there,
- 47:58Speaker 1: not even the traffic light. Good. Yeah, big adjustment, big
- 48:02Speaker 1: adjustment in that man. So how white medicine? Though? But
- 48:05Speaker 1: why medicine? You know, I was, I was like to
- 48:07Speaker 1: share personal stories where I talk to people because I
- 48:11Speaker 1: know I can't cut on nobody. I know, I can't
- 48:14Speaker 1: tell nobody that the sick. I know that. But why medicine? Certain,
- 48:19Speaker 1: I think the power of positive reinforcement. My mother has
- 48:23Speaker 1: been calling me. My mother and siblings have been calling
- 48:25Speaker 1: me doctor since I was probably since I was walking. Wow,
- 48:30Speaker 1: I've been saying I was going to be a doctor
- 48:31Speaker 1: myself since I was five years old. And I remember
- 48:34Speaker 1: in seventh grade I said, I really, I really made
- 48:37Speaker 1: the decision, said I'm really going to be a doctor,
- 48:39Speaker 1: you know, and I'm really gonna try to get all eggs.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I made that decision myself in seventh grade. And like
- 48:44Speaker 1: I said, my mother, and I'm sure my mother, you know,
- 48:46Speaker 1: she she said, I know what you're capable of. You know,
- 48:49Speaker 1: you really don't need to bring me nothing home more
- 48:51Speaker 1: than they. You don't need to bring nothing less home,
- 48:53Speaker 1: you know. She she just basically said that to me.
- 48:56Speaker 1: And uh, I think how passing with my father dying
- 49:00Speaker 1: of a preventable illness was was comply one of the
- 49:04Speaker 1: deciding factors in my mind. He died of a metastatic
- 49:07Speaker 1: colon cancer to the brain and just like just like
- 49:11Speaker 1: a lot of black men, you know, he knew he
- 49:12Speaker 1: was sick. He waited till after Christmas to go in,
- 49:15Speaker 1: you know, and that was our last Christmas with them,
- 49:18Speaker 1: so U yeah, and that was you know, five years old,
- 49:21Speaker 1: almost six when he passed away, you know. So all
- 49:25Speaker 1: that had all that, I'm sure just in that upbringing,
- 49:28Speaker 1: you know, and then I had believe it not I
- 49:31Speaker 1: even had a black doctor growing up in that in
- 49:34Speaker 1: that small town, and he was a World War two
- 49:36Speaker 1: veteran with my father, and my father was a medic
- 49:40Speaker 1: in World War two. Wow, So there was there was
- 49:44Speaker 1: there was kind of lionage there. Let me let me
- 49:46Speaker 1: ask you this because you know, you said that about
- 49:48Speaker 1: black men, and we hit that a lot in the
- 49:50Speaker 1: black community. You know, before we hear two things in
- 49:53Speaker 1: the black community. You know, not enough quality healthcare. But
- 49:56Speaker 1: then we hear the story about black men who are
- 50:00Speaker 1: don't want to acknowledge they need to go to doctors
- 50:03Speaker 1: or don't want to go to doctors. What what's creates
- 50:07Speaker 1: that doctor MAdCAM in our male community. Well, I think
- 50:13Speaker 1: one lack lack of knowledge, you know, of of of medicine.
- 50:17Speaker 1: That's that's that's definitely one, you know, and we know
- 50:21Speaker 1: the main thing would be our our health care disparities
- 50:23Speaker 1: and a lot of those are created by you know,
- 50:25Speaker 1: lack of access, you know, lack of having representation of
- 50:29Speaker 1: having an African American physician. Um, you know, um, we
- 50:34Speaker 1: as African Americans make up what almost what twelve percent
- 50:37Speaker 1: of the population, but yet less than four percent of
- 50:39Speaker 1: us are doctors. So that's that's definitely showing that we
- 50:42Speaker 1: don't have the representation as needed. And you know, ultimately
- 50:46Speaker 1: with black man we know, uh, it stems from the
- 50:48Speaker 1: mistrust of the medical system in general, and we can't
- 50:51Speaker 1: hire the fact that there is and there should be mistrust,
- 50:55Speaker 1: you know, but a lot along with that mistrust is
- 50:57Speaker 1: a lot of misinformation. So you know, I tell people,
- 51:00Speaker 1: like we know about the Tuskegee experiment, We know, the
- 51:03Speaker 1: trocities that they committed against our black men and black
- 51:06Speaker 1: women and black babies. Because if black men are affected,
- 51:08Speaker 1: the wives are affected. So it's not like the men
- 51:10Speaker 1: would just walk around syphilist. You know, the women were
- 51:13Speaker 1: catching it too. The babies were catching it and having
- 51:15Speaker 1: complications of you know, pregnancy and and and giving birth
- 51:18Speaker 1: to the baby with cyphilis. So all those health care
- 51:21Speaker 1: disparities kind of kind of mount up, and that adds
- 51:24Speaker 1: up the apprehension of a black man, you know, seeking
- 51:28Speaker 1: you know, to get medical attention. Cool that mistrust. Can
- 51:32Speaker 1: you know, if you don't trust somebody, you're not gonna
- 51:34Speaker 1: you're not gonna show up. That's absolutely true, because you know,
- 51:38Speaker 1: we walk in there afraid. Anyway. I know, I've never
- 51:41Speaker 1: walked into doctor's office confident because I don't know because
- 51:46Speaker 1: I I don't know what they might find out about me.
- 51:48Speaker 1: I don't know for a high blood pressure, I don't know,
- 51:51Speaker 1: cholesterol level, I don't know. You know, I've been I
- 51:54Speaker 1: you know, I've had a normal THORAXX in my life,
- 51:57Speaker 1: which means that my long collapse while I was just
- 51:59Speaker 1: watch and TV. I've I've been diagnosed with cancer, thyrod cancer,
- 52:05Speaker 1: so you know, once you're diagnosed, as they might say
- 52:07Speaker 1: that you in remission, but it means that it can't
- 52:09Speaker 1: come back. I've been I've had my gallbladder removed, and
- 52:13Speaker 1: so these are things you know, that have happened to
- 52:15Speaker 1: me just in my daily life, my daily my daily process.
- 52:20Speaker 1: And you know, the cancer was discovered basically through going
- 52:23Speaker 1: in there doing exams. If I didn't have these exams,
- 52:27Speaker 1: Lord knows, I may not be talking to you right
- 52:29Speaker 1: now because I didn't. Nobody wouldn't have had that preventive
- 52:32Speaker 1: medicine treatment, because I wanted to talk about that as
- 52:34Speaker 1: we close out your interview about what as black people,
- 52:39Speaker 1: black men, black families can do in the value of
- 52:43Speaker 1: preventative medicine. Be advocates for one another. You know, everyone
- 52:49Speaker 1: in the family should be advocates for one another, because
- 52:52Speaker 1: like to say, for instance, my father died colon cancer,
- 52:55Speaker 1: so I made sure that all my brothers had their
- 52:58Speaker 1: colon cancer screening, not fifty you know, nine to forty five,
- 53:02Speaker 1: but I made sure, I say, we had a higher risk.
- 53:04Speaker 1: You know, our dad died of it, uncle died of it.
- 53:06Speaker 1: So we getting our we all getting our colon ospies.
- 53:08Speaker 1: By the age of forty. All my brother's done it.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Two of us had two of us had polyps. You
- 53:13Speaker 1: know that. You know, they say a polyp. If it's
- 53:16Speaker 1: one of the specific polyps, that's the type of polop
- 53:18Speaker 1: that can take about eight years to turn into cancer.
- 53:21Speaker 1: So you know, So having those colon ospies at age forty,
- 53:24Speaker 1: getting those polops removed, having to follow up colon ospy
- 53:27Speaker 1: five years later, being clear, that's what you do. You know,
- 53:30Speaker 1: that's what you do. You prevent that that that polyp
- 53:33Speaker 1: from from growing over a period of eight you know,
- 53:35Speaker 1: up to eight years and turning into cancer. So advocates
- 53:38Speaker 1: for one another, educating one another, and one we just
- 53:41Speaker 1: you know, you you you gotta find a doctor that
- 53:43Speaker 1: you trust. Uh and you paying all this money for
- 53:47Speaker 1: your healthcare, all you guys out there with those jobs
- 53:50Speaker 1: and benefits, everyone for you. So I have an age
- 53:54Speaker 1: appropriate physical exam for my males that are under under
- 53:58Speaker 1: twelve from twelve twelve to eighteen, eighteen, twenty twenty five
- 54:02Speaker 1: to thirty five. You know, so I know what needs
- 54:05Speaker 1: to be done, what type of tests need to be done.
- 54:06Speaker 1: When when we need to start screening for this, When
- 54:08Speaker 1: we screen for test kick cancer. When we screen for
- 54:11Speaker 1: prostate cancer, you know, and more importantly now, you know,
- 54:14Speaker 1: if we start screening for depression, you know, we gotta
- 54:17Speaker 1: we gotta recognize that this is Hughmongus in our black community,
- 54:21Speaker 1: and we got to start screening these kids between age
- 54:23Speaker 1: eleven and thirteen for depression. Absolutely. I'm talking to doctor
