- 0:05Hello friends and welcome back to another episode of Aligned
- 0:09and Thriving for Teachers. Now I'm so excited mainly
- 0:14because I'm actually home. It's calm, it's quiet, I have a
- 0:20hot coffee. So like my self care cup right
- 0:24now is very full. So this is awesome.
- 0:26So the vibes are high and today's topic, look, it's been
- 0:31on my heart a while. And it is a really, I don't know
- 0:35whether to say important or just a really obvious thing to talk
- 0:41about at the moment with what's going on or what has been going
- 0:44on across the nation and things like that.
- 0:48So is teaching still actually worth it?
- 0:54Now, I'll be honest, I do think about this a lot.
- 0:57We hear all the stories about burnout, working long hours and
- 1:01the pay that doesn't always keep up with the cost of living.
- 1:05But I also know that every fortnight my salary lands in my
- 1:09account. It's consistent and it is
- 1:11something that I am truly grateful for.
- 1:14In a world where so much feels uncertain, that stability really
- 1:19matters. And, and that's something to me
- 1:21that counts. What we need to try and think
- 1:24about is, is what the value is for us.
- 1:29Because remember, we're not our job.
- 1:30This is this is all a part of it though.
- 1:32We need to find gratitude in the reality.
- 1:36Do I work hard for that money? Absolutely.
- 1:40Teaching is not just about being in front of a class.
- 1:43It is the planning, the reporting, the meetings.
- 1:46It's all the extras that spill out into our evenings and on our
- 1:50weekends and even in our holidays.
- 1:54And yes, sometimes it really hits hard or it stings us when
- 1:57we have to strike to have our voices heard.
- 2:01Or when people outside of the profession say things like, oh,
- 2:05I don't envy your job. I'd never want to do what you
- 2:08do. I don't have as much patience
- 2:09with you. How do you put up with those
- 2:11kids? All the time.
- 2:13But I have learned over the years to just pause and ask
- 2:16myself, what in my day can I be grateful for?
- 2:21Who's that student that made me really smile today?
- 2:24What moment made me remember why I chose this job, why I chose
- 2:30this path? And remembering my why?
- 2:34Because even on the hardest days, there is always something.
- 2:39There is that balance and we have to find it between
- 2:42challenge and reward. And I'm not in this for the pay.
- 2:46And if I were, I might have chosen my job differently and I
- 2:50probably would have stuck to the human resource side of things
- 2:53and and gone down that path. But I am in this for these
- 2:57moments. It's the spark in a child's eye
- 3:00when they actually get it, when they've grasped that concept
- 3:04that you've literally been banging on about and they
- 3:07finally got it and you're like, yes, I did my job.
- 3:10You're so excited. Like that's a little happy
- 3:12dance. It's everything.
- 3:14It's it's those thank you notes that we find tucked in a drawer
- 3:18that we may have had stowed away from years ago.
- 3:20I have those. I have a handwritten thank you
- 3:24note from a couple of students that I taught over the years.
- 3:27It just brings that that little spark of joy back.
- 3:30It's the laughter that you have in the staff room that you're
- 3:33sharing after you've had the world's craziest day and you
- 3:37just can't believe what happened and you just all laugh about it.
- 3:40And tomorrow's a new day. I live for those moments.
- 3:44And yet, I'll say it, I still love my holidays.
- 3:47I love that they're a chance to breathe, reconnect and fill my
- 3:51own cup so that I can keep giving to my community, like my
- 3:55school community, and to my own kids.
- 3:57And I love that time with them and I love that I have the same
- 4:00time off as them so I don't have to be farming them off
- 4:04everywhere. Although the flip side of that
- 4:06is I do end up with a lot of kids, but that is OK because I
- 4:10have that opportunity to do that.
- 4:12So looking at the bigger picture, you've got to think
- 4:16about that too. I think about that and teacher
- 4:19salaries in Australia, they average around 74,000, like base
- 4:23grade I'm talking. And while that's steady, our
- 4:26wages, they really haven't kept up with the cost of living.
- 4:29I know that, you know that. That's why these things are sort
- 4:32of happening. Many of us are picking up side
- 4:35hustles just to make life work, whether it's paying for kids
- 4:38sports or contributing to the increasing grocery bill.
- 4:43Like, I don't know about you, but I didn't realise how much
- 4:46food kids actually eat. Like they're, I don't know, my
- 4:50kids are growing and they just seem to eat more.
- 4:53And I know that there's people on here that have teenagers and
- 4:55I know it's going to get worse, but like really the, the cost of
- 5:00groceries right now, like we shop once a fortnight and top up
- 5:03weekly and all those things. But it's just ridiculous.
- 5:07And trying to cut back when they still need the fruit, the veg,
- 5:10all of the things. There's you've got to do other
- 5:13stuff sometimes just to get by really.
- 5:16And to pay for the endless amount of kids sport that we now
- 5:19pay for. And the glorified Uber driver
- 5:21that I have become of taking said children to said sport.
- 5:25And I love them for it. And I love that they're doing
- 5:27something that they're enjoying, but it doesn't get any cheaper.
- 5:32The prices are not going down. Everything is just going up.
- 5:36And we are expected to keep up with that.
- 5:39But in order for that to happen, like the wage needs to come too.
- 5:44And I know I'm I'm preaching to the already converted and I know
- 5:48you know this, but it is the honest truth.
- 5:51Like, I just don't understand why it can't happen.
- 5:56Well, maybe I do. I do understand why it can't
- 5:58happen instantly, but we really do need to be matching that.
- 6:02Like I know that there are people that I watch on TV that
- 6:06are doing maybe sport activities that are getting paid a lot
- 6:11more. I know that there are people
- 6:13working in other roles, other jobs and other positions that
- 6:17are getting paid a lot more than what we are getting paid.
- 6:21Like where is the value in that when we have a nation wide
- 6:27teacher shortage, We are stretched thinner than ever and
- 6:32yet we're still here. We are still showing up because
- 6:35we care. And I know I said I don't do
- 6:38this for the money. We don't.
- 6:40But wouldn't it be nice if we were rewarded a little bit more
- 6:45to keep showing up and teaching the next generation?
- 6:50Because honestly, that's what we are doing.
- 6:53We are shaping the next leaders of our nation.
- 6:58We are shaping the next lot of people that are going out into
- 7:01society. We are part of that.
- 7:04And I know how much I love AI and all the wonderful things
- 7:08that it can do, but it is not a human being.
- 7:10It cannot think and feel like a human being can.
- 7:15It can mimic that, but it cannot actually feel.
- 7:19And it will just tell you what you need to know.
- 7:22If you are guiding it in the right way, like say you're
- 7:24Googling something like what's the benefit of reciprocal
- 7:30reading or just what came out? It will give you the benefits of
- 7:33that. If you turn around and say what
- 7:35are the negatives? It will give you the negatives
- 7:37because that's what you're telling it to do.
- 7:39Whereas if you talk to me about that, I'd probably give you both
- 7:43and give you a well rounded up. It's only gonna give you what
- 7:46you're actually asking it or telling it to do.
- 7:49Whereas we as human beings have those thoughts, those feelings,
- 7:52those emotions, and we are physically there to console and
- 7:57do those things. But Can you imagine AI coming
- 8:00into a classroom and that's how the kids are getting taught?
- 8:03What happens to the kid that actually hurts themselves?
- 8:06How do they comfort that child? They are not going to be there
- 8:09to do that. And look, we've lived through
- 8:13COVID. We educated children through
- 8:16use, the use of technology. And I'm sorry, but if you were
- 8:19in one of those classrooms, it did not work.
- 8:23The explicit teaching side of things did not work.
- 8:27They still needed pure human support.
- 8:31The work didn't get done or it did get done, didn't get done
- 8:34properly. There's all these things that
- 8:37happened. So we are not replaceable.
- 8:40So we need to be basically compensated for the fact that we
- 8:45are still required. We are still part of that
- 8:47frontline resource, and I know that everyone has different
- 8:51opinions about that, and I know that they like to say things and
- 8:55comment on Facebook posts and whatever about our jobs and what
- 8:59we do. But those are people who do not
- 9:01work in our occupation or in our field or don't have anything to
- 9:04do with it. They're not married to a
- 9:06teacher, they're not friends with a teacher.
- 9:09They just don't understand what actually goes on.
- 9:13We are getting threatened physically, mentally, we get
- 9:19abused. We cop it from every angle.
- 9:22We just don't tell the whole world about it because we care
- 9:25about the children and we want what's best for them.
- 9:29So we put up with some of that stuff because we are there for
- 9:32the children and that's all we want.
- 9:35We want them to succeed. So we deal with those things so
- 9:40that your child can succeed. That's what we want.
- 9:43That's what we're here for. So I don't know, maybe that's
- 9:46the key. Maybe we need to start
- 9:49acknowledging that there are cracks in the system, but start
- 9:52finding the good and advocating for the good and how important
- 9:56we actually are. I tend to ask myself sometimes
- 10:01when it's hard, like how can I stay grounded in gratitude even
- 10:05when those numbers don't seem to add up?
- 10:08Well, that's because I turn up every day and I find the good in
- 10:12every day. I'm, I'm doing what I can do to
- 10:16support what needs to be done and the conversations that need
- 10:21to happen. But I am still turning up every
- 10:23day and I'm finding those little moments to be grateful for every
- 10:29single day. Because when you're in doubt,
- 10:33you need to choose to see peace. You need to make a choice when
- 10:38things aren't going your way or when things are getting hard.
- 10:41We, we choose to see peace. We make our own choices and we
- 10:45think about our own thoughts and we control them because that's
- 10:48within our sphere of control, really.
- 10:51So we're looking to still find the good we need to celebrate
- 10:55the wins we do have. I don't want this to be all
- 10:59negative and all horrid. I want us to celebrate the fact
- 11:03that we still get to stand in front of a classroom and that we
- 11:06are important to every kid in that room and we are there to
- 11:10support them. So celebrate the wins we do
- 11:13have. What if we let the joy of a
- 11:16student's success outweigh the frustration of the endless
- 11:19paperwork we have to do? That's what we have to think
- 11:22about. We have to outweigh the
- 11:24negatives with so many positives.
- 11:27And that's why we turn up every day.
- 11:29And what if we remembered, and this is important, what if we
- 11:33remembered that the holidays are not just time off.
- 11:36They are a built in reminder for us to pause, rest and reflect.
- 11:45And that's making sure that when someone comes to you with a
- 11:48comment of you get so many holidays.
- 11:51Well, yeah, we do because we have earned them.
- 11:54It is our chance to pause, rest and reflect and prepare
- 11:59ourselves or another term, or for another year.
- 12:02They are there for a reason, that's what we do.
- 12:07So for me, is teaching still worth it?
- 12:10Heck yes it is, but not because it's easy or perfect.
- 12:15It is worth it because even on our hardest days and in the
- 12:20times that are hard and rough like they are at the moment, we
- 12:25can still find something to be grateful for.
- 12:28I still find something to be grateful for in every single day
- 12:34because that keeps my mindset in the positive.
- 12:38I know I mentioned lots of things that are negative because
- 12:41I wanted to name them up with you all so that you are aware
- 12:44that yeah, I know what's going on, but I'm choosing to be
- 12:47grateful for what we do have. And I want to leave you with
- 12:50this. What were three things that you
- 12:54were grateful for today? And if you are getting to a
- 12:57point where you're going to have a term break or you're looking
- 13:00forward to one, what are you excited about?
- 13:02What is something you are going to do to rest, pause and reset?
- 13:08Ready. Because no matter what is
- 13:10happening in our system, gratitude is going to keep us
- 13:13going. So until next time, I hope that
- 13:17you are doing the best that you can to find a little bit of joy
- 13:21in every single day and look for those moments that literally
- 13:25make it all worthwhile. Because again, going back to
- 13:30your why, that's what you're there for.
- 13:32That's what I'm there for. It is my why.
- 13:35So yes, we acknowledge all the stuff that's going on in our
- 13:38nation and things that are happening and yeah, it is
- 13:40probably called for, but we are going to keep looking for the
- 13:44joy and those special little moments to keep us thriving and
- 13:49doing our absolute best. SO until next time, keep being
- 13:53aligned, keep thriving, and keep finding those moments to be
- 13:58absolutely over the moon thankful for in your each and
- 14:02every day. I'll talk to you next time.
- 14:04Bye, guys.
