- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Acts chapter 3, first we see
- 0:45God perform a miracle of healing through Peter and John.
- 0:49A beggar who was born lame asked Peter and John for money as
- 0:52they're approaching the temple. Peter tells the man that he has
- 0:54no silver or gold, but what he does have he will give to the
- 0:57beggar. Then he says in the name of
- 0:59Jesus Christ the Nazarene walk. Instantly the man is healed and
- 1:03the passage tells us he went walking and leaping and praising
- 1:07God, much like we saw through Jesus ministry in the gospels.
- 1:10This miracle was not just for the sake of physical healing.
- 1:13Obviously it results in both the beggar and those around praising
- 1:16God for his power, but it also grants Peter an audience with
- 1:20the people now standing in amazement to preach a gospel
- 1:23sermon. And it is on this sermon I want
- 1:25us to spend the rest of our time today.
- 1:27Peter does not work very hard to appease the crowd.
- 1:30In fact, if you just heard the first half of his message he
- 1:32would certainly not be pleased. Listen to what he tells the
- 1:35Jewish crowd. Laying the blame for Jesus death
- 1:38squarely on their shoulders. He says, men of Israel, why are
- 1:41you amazed at this or why do you gaze at us as if by our own
- 1:44power or piety we had made him walk?
- 1:47The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers,
- 1:49has glorified his servant Jesus, the one whom you delivered and
- 1:53disowned in the presence of Pilate when he had decided to
- 1:56release him. But you disowned the holy and
- 1:58righteous one and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,
- 2:01but put to death the Prince of life, the one whom God raised
- 2:04from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses.
- 2:07You delivered him, you disowned him, you ask for a murderer to
- 2:11be granted to you, and you put to death the Prince of life.
- 2:15Wow. But Peter isn't finished because
- 2:18what comes next is miraculous. What comes after the bad news is
- 2:22the best news in the whole world, and not just for this 1st
- 2:25century audience, but for you and for me, and for all of us
- 2:28sinners who have fallen short of the glory of God.
- 2:31Listen to Peter's invitation. And now, brethren, I know that
- 2:34you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also.
- 2:38But the things which God announced beforehand by the
- 2:40mouth of all the prophets that his Christ would suffer, He has
- 2:43thus fulfilled. Therefore, repent and return, so
- 2:47that your sins may be wiped away, in order, that times of
- 2:50refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that
- 2:53He may send Jesus the Christ appointed for you.
- 2:56First, Peter echoes the words of Jesus on the cross when He asked
- 3:00the Father to forgive those putting Him to death because
- 3:02they did not know what they were doing.
- 3:04Then Peter makes abundantly clear that these men and women
- 3:06who bear the blame for putting Jesus on the cross have been
- 3:09invited to partake of the salvation that Jesus won for
- 3:13them on that very cross. If they would but repent and
- 3:16return. And their sins will be wiped
- 3:19away, and they will be welcomed into the rest and refreshment of
- 3:22the very presence of the Lord. And this great salvation
- 3:25available to them is available to us.
- 3:27Just as it was the sin of those ancients that put Jesus on the
- 3:30cross, so it was our sin for which He died.
- 3:33But if we will repent and return to Him, we can experience the
- 3:37salvation that He offers as a free gift through His death and
- 3:40resurrection. Listen to these words from the
- 3:43hymn. How deep the Father's love for
- 3:45us. Behold the man upon a cross, my
- 3:48sin upon his shoulders. Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
- 3:52call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held him
- 3:55there until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me
- 3:59life. I know that it is finished.
- 4:02It was our sin. We put Jesus on the cross, but
- 4:05His death has brought life for us.
- 4:07He has accomplished it. He's done it for us.
- 4:10The hymn closes with this third verse.
- 4:13I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom.
- 4:17But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and
- 4:19resurrection. Why should I gain from His
- 4:22reward? I cannot give an answer, but
- 4:24this I know with all my heart. His wounds have paid my ransom.
- 4:29Why should we benefit from Christ's death?
- 4:31It is too deep a love to understand or explain.
- 4:35But we know that the Jesus that we crucified has paid our debt.
- 4:39We are forgiven, set free, and made new by the blood of Christ.
