- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Well, hey everyone and welcome back to
- 0:17Connecting the Dots. It's April 1st as we're
- 0:21recording this. Oh, wow. So if anything we talk
- 0:24about sounds a little too good to be true, maybe
- 0:26double check those sources. Yeah, maybe wait
- 0:28till tomorrow. Uh -huh. Exactly. But really,
- 0:30though, we've got some big tech news to break
- 0:33down today. Yeah, for sure. Some stories that
- 0:36really could have a big impact on, well, basically
- 0:39everyone. Yeah. That's kind of the whole point
- 0:41of tech, right? It places like every part of
- 0:42our lives these days. It really does. I'm excited
- 0:46to dive in, and as always, I'm here to kind of
- 0:50set the stage, and then our expert is here to
- 0:54help us connect the dots and really understand
- 0:57what this all means. Exactly, I'm here to add
- 0:59that context and analysis so we can all see the
- 1:01bigger picture. All right, well, let's get to
- 1:03it. Our first big story is about TSMC. That's
- 1:06Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. They
- 1:09just announced that they are going to invest
- 1:12$100 A hundred billion in the U .S. Wow, that
- 1:17is a lot of money. That's a huge number. So what's
- 1:21going on here? Why is a company from Taiwan investing
- 1:25so much in the U .S.? Well, you know, I think
- 1:28this is a really interesting story because it
- 1:30kind of shows how important semiconductors have
- 1:33become. Right. You know, they're these tiny little
- 1:36chips that are in everything from smartphones
- 1:38to cards. To refrigerators. Yeah, and toasters,
- 1:41probably even haha. Yeah, pretty much everything.
- 1:44And for a long time, most of these chips were
- 1:45made in Asia. places like Taiwan and China. Right.
- 1:49But in recent years, there's been a growing push
- 1:52to bring more of this manufacturing back to the
- 1:55U .S. Like kind of a made in America push. Exactly.
- 1:58And I think this investment from TSMC is a big
- 2:00part of that. OK, so this 100 billion dollars
- 2:02is going to be used to build new factories. Yes,
- 2:05specifically for making advanced semiconductors.
- 2:07OK, so how does this tie into what TSMC is already
- 2:10doing in the U .S.? They've already got projects
- 2:12going on in Arizona, right? Right. They've already
- 2:14committed about 12 billion dollars to a facility.
- 2:16in Arizona, and then there's another 25 billion
- 2:19planned for a third factory there. So by 2030,
- 2:23they were already set to invest 65 billion just
- 2:26in Arizona. Yeah, that's right. And on top of
- 2:29that, they've also gotten up to $6 .6 billion
- 2:32in grants from the US government. What, through
- 2:35the CTS Act? Yes, through the CTS Act, which
- 2:38was passed last year, to encourage... companies
- 2:41to build these kinds of factories in the US.
- 2:43So it sounds like the government is really trying
- 2:45to incentivize this kind of domestic chip production.
- 2:49Definitely. They're putting a lot of money behind
- 2:51it. I mean, it makes sense, right? Because like
- 2:52you said, these chips are in everything. Yeah,
- 2:54they're essential for so many industries. And
- 2:56if something were to happen and we couldn't get
- 2:58those chips, it would be a big problem. Like
- 3:01a major disruption to the economy. Yeah. So President
- 3:04Trump actually weighed in on this TSMC announcement.
- 3:07Yeah, I saw that. He talked about how these new
- 3:09factories would be making the most powerful AI
- 3:12chips in the world right here in America. And
- 3:14he said it would create thousands of jobs. High
- 3:17paying jobs too. And he put TSMC's total US investment
- 3:21now at like $165 billion. Wow, that is a lot
- 3:27of money. It really is. So he's clearly really
- 3:30pushing this idea of bringing chip manufacturing
- 3:32back to the US. Oh, yeah, for sure. You know,
- 3:35he talked about how it's essential for economic
- 3:37security and national security. Right, because
- 3:40we wouldn't have to rely on other countries for
- 3:41these crucial components. Exactly. TSMC's CEO,
- 3:46C .C. Way, also released a statement about this
- 3:48new investment. Yeah, he talked about how their
- 3:51vision is becoming a reality in Arizona and how
- 3:54they plan to build even more factories here.
- 3:56He said they would be hiring like 3 ,000 people
- 3:59to work at their Arizona facility. That's a lot
- 4:01of new jobs. Yeah, so this is definitely good
- 4:03news for the U .S. economy. Right. But the articles
- 4:06we read also mentioned that there's some uncertainty
- 4:08about whether TSMC will actually move its most
- 4:11advanced chip production to the U .S. Yeah, that's
- 4:13a good point. They've historically kept their
- 4:15most sophisticated chips in Taiwan. Right. So
- 4:18this new investment is great, but it doesn't
- 4:20necessarily mean that the U .S. will be getting
- 4:22the absolute cutting edge technology. So it's
- 4:24kind of a wait and see situation. We'll have
- 4:27to see how it all plays out. Okay, so we've got
- 4:29this massive investment from TSMC. They're building
- 4:32new factories, creating jobs, but there's still
- 4:36some uncertainty about exactly what level of
- 4:38technology they'll be bringing to the U .S. Yeah,
- 4:41that's a good summary. Now the sources we looked
- 4:43at also hinted at why this might be happening
- 4:45now. They pointed to some things that President
- 4:48Trump has said and done in the past. Like what?
- 4:51Well, remember how he threatened to put tariffs
- 4:54on computer chips and other products from China?
- 4:57Oh yeah, I remember that. And he was really pushing
- 5:00hard on this idea of bringing manufacturing back
- 5:02to the U .S. Right. So some people are saying
- 5:05that TSMC's investment is partly a response to
- 5:09that. Like a way to avoid those tariffs. Yeah,
- 5:11or at least to kind of hedge their bets. So it's
- 5:13not just about wanting to invest in the U .S.
- 5:15It's also about trying to navigate this changing
- 5:18political landscape. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 5:20And this isn't just happening with TSMC. Apple
- 5:23recently announced that they're going to invest
- 5:25over $500 billion in the US economy. And create
- 5:2920 ,000 new jobs. And NVIDIA, another big chip
- 5:32company, has said that... they might be affected
- 5:34by these tariffs and export controls. Yeah, they
- 5:37make a lot of the chips that are used in AI and
- 5:39other things. So this is all part of a bigger
- 5:41trend. A really big shift in the global tech
- 5:43landscape. Yeah. So it's interesting that President
- 5:46Trump has been pushing so hard for domestic chip
- 5:48manufacturing. Right. But he has also been critical
- 5:51of the Chips Act, which is the law that's providing
- 5:55those incentives for companies like PSMC. Yeah.
- 5:58It's a bit of a mixed message. So what does all
- 6:01this mean for us regular folks who just want
- 6:03to buy our smartphones and computers and cars?
- 6:07Well, I think the biggest impact is going to
- 6:08be on supply chains. OK. Remember how during
- 6:11the pandemic it was really hard to find certain
- 6:13electronics? Oh, yeah. Like webcams and stuff.
- 6:16That was partly because of supply chain issues.
- 6:18Right. And a lot of those issues stemmed from
- 6:20the fact that so many of these chips were being
- 6:22made in just a few places. OK. So if we have
- 6:24more chip manufacturing happening in the US.
- 6:26Right. it could make those supply chains more
- 6:29resilient. So like less likely to be disrupted.
- 6:32Exactly. And that could mean that it's easier
- 6:34to find the products we want. OK. And maybe even
- 6:37that the prices are a little bit lower. OK. So
- 6:39more stability and maybe even lower prices. Yeah.
- 6:42That's the hope. What about all this stuff we
- 6:44keep hearing about AI? Oh yeah, AI. How does
- 6:47this chip manufacturing stuff tie into that?
- 6:50The chips that are used in AI are some of the
- 6:52most advanced chips out there. Okay. They require
- 6:54a lot of specialized knowledge and equipment
- 6:57to make. So if the US is going to be a leader
- 7:00in AI, it needs to have the capacity to... make
- 7:03those ships. So this investment from TSMC could
- 7:06be a big step in that direction. Yeah, it could
- 7:09really help to accelerate the development of
- 7:11AI in the U .S. And that could have a big impact
- 7:13on all sorts of things like health care and transportation
- 7:15and pretty much every industry. Yeah. OK, so
- 7:19we've talked about TSMC and their big investment.
- 7:22Yeah. Now let's zoom out a little bit and talk
- 7:24about some of the other things that President
- 7:26Trump has been doing related to tech and investment.
- 7:29One of the big things that came out in the news
- 7:30is this new office that he's creating within
- 7:33the Commerce Department. Oh yeah, the United
- 7:35States Investment Accelerator. What a name. It's
- 7:38a mouthful. Yeah, but what is it? What does it
- 7:40do? Basically, it's going to be in charge of
- 7:43overseeing the GPS Act. Oh, interesting. Which
- 7:45is kind of funny because he's been so critical
- 7:47of the GPS Act. Yeah, it is kind of funny. But
- 7:50anyway, the White House says that this new office
- 7:52is going to help speed up corporate investments
- 7:54in the U .S. So they're trying to cut through
- 7:56the red tape. Yeah, they want to make it easier
- 7:59for companies to invest here. And they're specifically
- 8:01focused on attracting large scale investments.
- 8:04Right, they want the big companies to come here
- 8:06and build factories and create jobs. OK, so this
- 8:09investment accelerator is going to be working
- 8:12with companies, helping them to navigate the
- 8:15regulatory process. And helping them to access
- 8:18resources. Like what kind of resources? Well,
- 8:20things like land and water and energy. OK. And
- 8:23they'll also be coordinating with different government
- 8:25agencies. So it's kind of a one stop shop. for
- 8:27companies that are looking to invest in the US.
- 8:30Yeah. That's the idea. Now, this new office isn't
- 8:33the only thing that's happening. Right. There
- 8:35have been some other big announcements in the
- 8:37tech world recently. Like that $500 billion Stargate
- 8:40project. Oh, yeah. That's a crazy amount of money.
- 8:43I know. It's a huge investment in AI infrastructure.
- 8:46With companies like OpenAI and Oracle and SoftBank
- 8:50involved. That's going to be the backbone of
- 8:52the next generation of AI. Yeah. And there's
- 8:54also DMACC properties who are investing $1E billion
- 8:58in AI data centers. So there's a lot of money
- 9:01flowing into this space right now. It's definitely
- 9:03a hot area. And it seems like President Trump
- 9:06is really engaged with all of this. Oh yeah,
- 9:09he's been meeting with a lot of tech leaders.
- 9:10Like Tim Cook from Apple. Right. And after that
- 9:13meeting, Apple announced that they were going
- 9:14to increase their investment in the US. Yeah,
- 9:17and Trump even suggested that it was partly because
- 9:19of those tariffs he's been talking about. So
- 9:21again, it seems like those tariffs are really
- 9:22having an impact. They're definitely a factor
- 9:25in a lot of these decisions. OK, so we've got
- 9:27this new investment accelerator and all this
- 9:30money flowing into AI. and these big tech companies
- 9:33making big investments in the US. And it all
- 9:35seems to be tied to this idea of making the US
- 9:38more competitive in the global tech landscape.
- 9:41Exactly. Now, there is also one other thing that
- 9:44came up in our research that I wanted to touch
- 9:46on. OK. It's not directly related to tech investment.
- 9:50OK. But it's still something that could have
- 9:52a big impact. There is a report that President
- 9:55Trump might be considering an executive order
- 9:58to dissolve the Department of Education. Oh.
- 10:01which was later denied. OK. But he has said that
- 10:04he wants to bring more control over schools back
- 10:07to the states. Right. And he's also mentioned
- 10:10that student loans might be moved to a different
- 10:12department. Like the Treasury or the SBA, or
- 10:15maybe even Commerce. Yeah. So even though this
- 10:17isn't directly related to tech, it shows that
- 10:20there's potential for some really big changes
- 10:22happening across the government. OK, now let's
- 10:25move on to something that I know a lot of you
- 10:27are excited about, the Nintendo Switch 2. Oh
- 10:30yes. It's finally happening. It's been a long
- 10:33time coming. It has. They've been teasing us
- 10:35for years, but they officially announced it and
- 10:38said it's going to be released sometime in 2025.
- 10:41That's exciting. And there's an Nintendo Direct
- 10:43happening tomorrow, April 2nd, where they're
- 10:46going to reveal more details. I can't wait to
- 10:48see what they show. Me too. Yeah. They did release
- 10:51a first look trailer. Oh yeah. And it looks like
- 10:54the Switch 2 is kind of an evolution of the original
- 10:56Switch. Yeah, it still has that hybrid design.
- 10:59So you can play it on your TV. Or take it on
- 11:02the go. But there are some noticeable design
- 11:04changes. Like what? Well, the screen is bigger.
- 11:08OK. It's rumored to be 7 .5 inches. Wow, that's
- 11:11a big difference. And it has thinner bezels.
- 11:13So more screen, less border. Exactly. And the
- 11:16kickstand is different too. Yeah, it runs across
- 11:18the whole back of the console now. And it looks
- 11:20a lot sturdier. That's a good improvement. Yeah,
- 11:22because the kickstand on the original Switch
- 11:23was kind of flimsy. It was. And there's also
- 11:26a new button on the right Joy -Con. Ooh, the
- 11:30mystery button. Yeah, nobody knows what it does
- 11:33yet. But everyone's speculating. And the way
- 11:34that the Joy -Cons attach to the console is different
- 11:37too. Yeah, they're using magnets now instead
- 11:39of that rail system. Which looks a lot smoother.
- 11:41And apparently there's a patent that suggests
- 11:43that the Joy -Cons might have mouse -like functionality.
- 11:47Wait, what? Mouse control on a switch? Yeah.
- 11:51It sounds weird, but think about the possibilities.
- 11:53I mean, it could be really cool for certain types
- 11:55of games. Like strategy games or puzzle games.
- 11:58Yeah! And there were also images of a more traditional
- 12:01-looking controller. Oh yeah, maybe a new pro
- 12:03controller. That would be awesome. Especially
- 12:05for people who like to play more hardcore games.
- 12:07Yeah. There's also a rumor that the Switch 2
- 12:10will have proximity chat. Really? Yeah, where
- 12:14it like detects when your face is near the console.
- 12:17That's kind of cool. And it automatically turns
- 12:19on the microphone. So you don't have to wear
- 12:20a headset. Exactly. That would be great for multiplayer
- 12:24games. Yeah, and some people think that new button
- 12:27might be related to that. Interesting. So we'll
- 12:29have to see. Now one of the big questions that
- 12:31people have is about backward compatibility.
- 12:34Right. Will it play games from the original Stitch?
- 12:37And the answer is yes. Awesome. Nintendo has
- 12:40confirmed that the Switch 2 will be able to play
- 12:43most of the games from the original Switch. That's
- 12:46a huge relief. It is, because a lot of people
- 12:49have built up big libraries of Switch games.
- 12:51Yeah, I know I have. And they don't want to have
- 12:53to start over. Exactly. And Nintendo Switch Online
- 12:56will also be available on the new system. So
- 12:58you can still play online with your friends.
- 13:00Yeah. Okay, so what about the tech specs? What
- 13:03kind of hardware is powering this new console?
- 13:06Well, the rumors are that it's going to be using
- 13:08an Nvidia T239 chip. OK. Which is a pretty powerful
- 13:13chip. And they're aiming for performance that's
- 13:15similar to a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One. That's
- 13:18a big step up from the original Switch. Yeah.
- 13:20And there are also rumors that it will have 12
- 13:23GBs of RAM. Wow, that's a lot of memory. And
- 13:26256 GBs of storage. That's way more than the
- 13:30original Switch. So it sounds like they're really
- 13:32beefing up the hardware. Definitely. Now what
- 13:35about the resolution? Ah. The big question. Is
- 13:39it going to be 4K? Well, that's what everyone
- 13:41wants to know. And it sounds like the answer
- 13:42is maybe. Maybe? Yeah, it seems like they're
- 13:46focusing more on 4K upscaling. So not necessarily
- 13:50native 4K. Right, but upscaling can still make
- 13:53games look really good on a 4K TV. And some developers
- 13:57who have early access to the hardware haven't
- 14:00seen 4K output enabled yet. So it's possible
- 14:03that it's still in development? Or maybe they're
- 14:05just saving it for a surprise announcement. Who
- 14:07knows? We'll have to wait and see. Now one thing
- 14:10that people are always concerned about with portable
- 14:12consoles is battery life. Yeah, nobody wants
- 14:15a console that dies after an hour of playing.
- 14:17And it sounds like the Switch 2 will have similar
- 14:20battery life to the current Switch. That's good
- 14:22to hear. Yeah, even though the new hardware is
- 14:24more powerful, they're also making it more energy
- 14:27efficient. So hopefully you'll still be able
- 14:29to get a few hours of playtime on a single charge.
- 14:32Okay, so we've talked about the console itself.
- 14:34Now what about the dock? Ah, yes, the dock. The
- 14:37thing that you plug the console into to play
- 14:40on your TV, it sounds like they've redesigned
- 14:42the dock for the Switch 2. Yeah, it has softer
- 14:45edges now. And it might have better airflow.
- 14:48There was a leak that showed a grid pattern on
- 14:51the back of the dock. Which could be for ventilation?
- 14:54Yeah, to help keep the console cool. And there's
- 14:56also info about a more powerful charger. A 60W
- 14:59charger. So your old Switch charger might not
- 15:02work. Yeah, that's something to keep in mind.
- 15:04And there have even been rumors of a wireless
- 15:06stock. Wireless? That would be awesome. It would.
- 15:09No more cables. Yeah, but that hasn't been confirmed
- 15:11yet. So we'll have to wait and see. Now the big
- 15:13question that everyone wants to know, how much
- 15:16is it going to cost? Yeah, that's the million
- 15:18dollar question. And nobody knows for sure yet.
- 15:20But the speculation online is all over the place.
- 15:22I've seen numbers from 349 to 499. Yeah, it's
- 15:27hard to say. But Nintendo has said that they're
- 15:29thinking about affordability. So hopefully they'll
- 15:32price it competitively. Yeah, because they want
- 15:34to make sure that as many people as possible
- 15:35can buy it. Right. So what does all this mean
- 15:38for you as a gamer? Well, if you're a fan of
- 15:41the Switch, this new console looks like it's
- 15:44going to be a big upgrade. Yeah, more power.
- 15:46Better graphics. A bigger screen. More storage.
- 15:49New ways to control the games. And all of your
- 15:51old games will still work. So it's a pretty compelling
- 15:54package. Definitely. All right. Let's do a quick
- 15:56recap of everything we've talked about today.
- 15:58OK. We started with... TSMC and their massive
- 16:02investment in the US. A hundred billion dollars.
- 16:05And how that's part of a bigger trend of bringing
- 16:08chip manufacturing back to the US. Then we talked
- 16:11about President Trump's initiatives to attract
- 16:13investment. Like the investment accelerator.
- 16:16And the focus on AI. And the potential for a
- 16:19national Bitcoin reserve. And how all of that
- 16:21could affect the economy and jobs. And then we
- 16:24finished up with the Nintendo Switch 2. The next
- 16:26generation of gaming. So, yeah, a lot to unpack
- 16:30today. It was a busy news day. It was. But I
- 16:33think it's all really interesting and important
- 16:35stuff. Yeah, because it shows how technology
- 16:38is changing the world. And how those changes
- 16:40are going to affect all of us. Yeah, in big ways
- 16:42and small ways. Exactly. It's fascinating how
- 16:45everything is kind of connected. Yeah. You know,
- 16:48you've got these global supply chains and government
- 16:51policies and consumer products, and they're all
- 16:54kind of intertwined. And they're all changing
- 16:56so rapidly. It's hard to keep up. It is. But
- 16:59that's what we're here for. Exactly. To help
- 17:01you connect the dots. All right. Well, that's
