- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:14And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:17Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:21I am Deacon Al Lundy. I'm here with you every Saturday and Sunday from 8 to
- 0:258.30 on Catholic Spirit Radio, talking about the good news of Jesus Christ,
- 0:30the readings from the Mass.
- 0:32And so this is the Feast of St.
- 0:36Peter and Paul, those great apostles of the Church, and that's what we celebrate this Sunday.
- 0:42And so we'll be reading about them and talking about not only their lives,
- 0:46but more about how our lives are connected to their lives.
- 0:50First, let's talk about my life. It's been a little crazy. It's been a busy
- 0:55week. I mentioned, I think, last week that my mother died recently.
- 0:59And so my wife, Sharon, and I have been busy taking care of her apartment,
- 1:04getting things cleared out now.
- 1:06And, you know, it's a double-edged sword.
- 1:10It's kind of nice to be able to sit down and go through all of her things and
- 1:15all the old pictures and all the old memories and the memorabilia that we find
- 1:19remembering where that came from and what we were doing as a family or what
- 1:23my parents were doing when they acquired this.
- 1:25But I'll tell you what? To take someone else's home that's full of stuff and
- 1:31move it into your home, which is already full of stuff.
- 1:34You just can't keep everything. And sometimes it's really difficult to let things
- 1:39go because they have such great memories attached to them.
- 1:42But I only need so many waffle irons.
- 1:46You only need so many crockpots. So we've been busying ourselves for the last
- 1:52week making lots of trips with lots of boxes to various charities and taking
- 1:58some of mom's treasures and sharing them with others.
- 2:02And hopefully they'll enjoy them
- 2:03as well. If you have someone passed away who, like my mom, had some...
- 2:09Illnesses and some physical issues. There are some great charities in town to
- 2:14take care of like the durable medical equipment.
- 2:18So here in Bloomington and probably near where you live, there's a charity called
- 2:25LifeSill and they take mobility items.
- 2:30And as I took a whole carload of things and entered them into the building,
- 2:35into their office and lined everything up, I realized what I was looking at
- 2:38was the life cycle of my mother's legs, because she started off being able to
- 2:45walk, and then at one time had to go to cane.
- 2:48So I had a few canes to donate. From canes, we went to walkers.
- 2:53So I had her walker and my dad's walker to take in. From walkers,
- 2:58we went to the wheelchair.
- 3:01So I had the transport chair. They didn't want the power chair.
- 3:04So I had the transport chair to give.
- 3:06And as I'm looking at this, I'm thinking, wow, this is her life cycle for the
- 3:10last 10 years, going from being able to walk to needing assistance to not being
- 3:16able to walk in like four or five stages.
- 3:19But they were so grateful to have all this equipment. There were the transition
- 3:25chairs for the shower to be able to get in and out of the tub.
- 3:28There was the various handholds that clamp to the tub to help her get in and out of the bathroom.
- 3:35There are just all sorts of special mobility equipment that we were able to share.
- 3:40And the nice thing about LifeSill, and again, perhaps you have LifeSill or another
- 3:44similar charity in your area, is they then rent these out for free to anybody who needs it.
- 3:51You know, you need a wheelchair, you can go to LifeSill and they'll rent it out to you for no charge.
- 3:58And I know that that helps a lot of people.
- 4:01We have a visiting nurses organization that we were able to give a lot of medical
- 4:07goods that my mother had because of her, she had an ileostomy.
- 4:10So to care for the ileostomy, she had an issue with phlebitis in her legs.
- 4:16So there was a lot of, just a lot of first aid type things that we no longer needed.
- 4:24And so we're able to donate all that. They'll use it for people with issues
- 4:28that are lacking the financial needs to get the equipment they need.
- 4:31So now I'm trying to find a home for the powered wheelchair,
- 4:34which kind of nobody wants, which is a shame because, I mean,
- 4:39this is a very expensive wheelchair.
- 4:40It was bought for my mother through Medicare.
- 4:43Medicare doesn't take it back. I called the organization that we actually bought
- 4:48it from, or Medicare bought it from. They don't want it back.
- 4:53These things cost thousands of dollars, right? I have a limited time to give it to someone.
- 5:00I'm not even trying to sell it. I was trying to donate it.
- 5:02And I can't get anybody to take the wheelchair.
- 5:05It's just very frustrating. I think I finally found an organization in Springfield
- 5:10who will send someone up, hopefully Monday, to pick the chair up.
- 5:16And they do the same thing.
- 5:17They loan these at no charge for people who need them.
- 5:20And they were very excited. It's a nice little powered wheelchair.
- 5:25The only problem it has, it's only a couple years old.
- 5:29The only problem it has is on one arm, there's white paint that is embedded into the black vinyl.
- 5:37Because if you know anyone with a powered wheelchair, it takes a while to get used to the steering.
- 5:43My dear mother ran into everything in that apartment that was three feet high
- 5:49or lower. She ended up hitting it.
- 5:52Doorways, corners, dressers, tables, chairs.
- 5:57If it was under three feet tall, my mom managed to hit it with this powered wheelchair.
- 6:02And sometimes take things down. She took an entire door frame down.
- 6:06The first couple weeks she had this, she was coming out of the bathroom,
- 6:09hooked the door frame with a back wheel on the chair and literally ripped the
- 6:14door off the wall, frame and all.
- 6:16So if you know someone who's getting a powered wheelchair, be patient.
- 6:20There's a huge learning curve on steering these things.
- 6:24It did make the house interesting because when you heard that click,
- 6:29you got out of the way fast because you had no idea what direction it was moving.
- 6:35But anyway, so the whole week we've been clearing out the apartment. And it's a tough job.
- 6:41And my brothers, God bless them all. I love my four brothers.
- 6:46They have been no help whatsoever.
- 6:48My youngest brother right now is traipsing through the highlands of Scotland.
- 6:54His son, who's now sophomore in college, about to be a junior,
- 6:59has been playing some kind of a computer game online with another kid.
- 7:04I say kid, but he's now, like I say, he's 21 now.
- 7:07In scotland which one of the beauties of the internet is you can do that you
- 7:12know you can i guess you would call it socializing with someone in an in another
- 7:16country and so he's been playing with this kid since they were both pre-teens,
- 7:21And now that they're both in college, they decided wouldn't it be cool to meet.
- 7:25So he wanted to go to Scotland. Well, even at 21, there was no way his mother
- 7:30was going to let him go to Scotland by himself.
- 7:33So she said, especially with someone they've never met before,
- 7:36they said, so no, it's a family trip. We're all going to go to Scotland.
- 7:40So the three of them are hiking for two weeks through the highlands,
- 7:45town to town. They found this program, the map, and it tells you where you can
- 7:50stay and where you can eat.
- 7:52And so they're hiking through the highlands, the three of them.
- 7:56They're sending back amazing pictures.
- 7:59I mean, just amazing, beautiful mountain, you know, countryside,
- 8:03deer just laying next to the road, kind of a live deer.
- 8:07We see deer laying next to the road, and that means something completely different.
- 8:11No, these are live deer just laying down next to the road. He's got a picture.
- 8:16He's about maybe 50 yards from Ten Point Stag.
- 8:19Just a beautiful animal, just standing at the tree line of this meadow. Just gorgeous.
- 8:26So they're going to be back in another week. So he's not helping with the apartment.
- 8:32My three other brothers, two
- 8:33of them work, and they've already taken off a lot of time at the funeral.
- 8:39And so they can't make it in to help. And the other one just had surgery,
- 8:44And he can't lift anything over a pound.
- 8:48So he's not helping. So it's my wife and I trying to sort out this apartment.
- 8:53And so, again, I love my brothers. I love them dearly.
- 8:58But they've said, we'd like to have this of mobs. Well, this tends to be a huge piece of furniture.
- 9:04We can't come get it yet. So hold on to it for us. Well, they don't seem to understand that we're,
- 9:12The lease is up in a few days. There is no holding on to it except holding it at my house.
- 9:18So I'm now holding furniture for four other households at my house.
- 9:25And yeah, you can't move without stepping around somebody else's stuff.
- 9:31So it's been a rough week. Been a rough week.
- 9:35But we have this great feast coming up this weekend in the church that I am so looking forward to.
- 9:41And it's because I like Peter and Paul. Paul is my confirmation name.
- 9:46And I took the name Paul for a very good reason. Actually, two very good reasons.
- 9:50We've both been thrown off horses. So I thought we had that in common.
- 9:55And not according to Scripture did he fall off a horse, but according to this
- 9:58famous portrait of Paul's conversion, it shows him being thrown from a horse.
- 10:06So we had that. And then the other thing was, I thought as a kid,
- 10:10if as bad as I am and as bad as Paul was if Christ could still love Paul even though I mean,
- 10:19he kind of egged people on into killing the deacon Stephen and yet,
- 10:25Christ loved him if Christ can love Paul then there's a chance for me too so
- 10:31I took the saint's name of Paul and very happy to have that and then I found
- 10:37out later that Paul was this great orator,
- 10:40great speaker, and a very convincing speaker.
- 10:44And it kind of made me interested in being active in speech club and things
- 10:50like that at high school and spend a little time on the radio.
- 10:53And I've actually gotten worse
- 10:54over the years. So there was a time I was actually pretty good at this.
- 10:58This is not the time, but there was a time I was pretty good at this and enjoyed it a,
- 11:03For me, this is a special feast because it includes Paul.
- 11:06So we're going to talk about the readings of the church and how Peter and Paul's
- 11:11life affect our lives even today.
- 11:13And we'll be back with that with more good news right after these messages.

- 14:08Welcome back to Good News. I am Deacon Al Lundy of the Peoria Diocese.
- 14:12We invite you to be part of the Good News program. If you have a question about
- 14:17Catholicism or Christianity in general, we invite you to write us.
- 14:20Our email address is goodnews at catholicspiritradio.org, and we will be happy
- 14:27to answer your questions on the air.
- 14:31A lot of times our questions revolving around Peter are all about the office of the Pope.
- 14:37And, well, Peter was never called Pope. No, he wasn't, but that's okay.
- 14:43There's a lot of words we use today that aren't in Scripture.
- 14:46That doesn't invalidate the word. Bible, for instance, is found nowhere in Scripture.
- 14:52That doesn't mean that the Bible doesn't exist or the Bible isn't valid.
- 14:57So let's not get word picky here, and let's look at what we learn from what Jesus teaches us.
- 15:05And he teaches us that there has to be a human involved in this,
- 15:11that there has to be this connection between heaven and earth,
- 15:15between Christ and his church, and he does that through one specific person.
- 15:20And so now it's called Pope, which simply means Papa.
- 15:23It's just an informal way of saying Father, a more endearing way,
- 15:30a more casual way of saying Father is Papa, and in the Latin,
- 15:35or the Italian, it's Pope.
- 15:37So, we'll find out how that came to be as far as how the bishop of Rome,
- 15:44Peter, came to be the human leader of the church.
- 15:49So, our first reading this weekend
- 15:50is going to be from the Acts of the Apostles. That's Luke, of course.
- 15:54And you have to remember that Luke came after the resurrection of Christ, and he knew Paul.
- 16:02He traveled with Paul. He wrote letters for Paul when Paul's eyesight was going bad.
- 16:07He was also a bit of a biographer and a church historian.
- 16:11So he realized that the apostles were all starting to die off,
- 16:15most of them being martyred.
- 16:17And he wanted to make sure that the stories they told of their experience with
- 16:22Jesus was properly documented.
- 16:25So Luke went back and started to interview eyewitnesses to find out what they remembered.
- 16:32And out of their stories, He put together two books, actually.
- 16:36We have the Gospel, according to Luke, and then we have Acts,
- 16:40which is like the second part of Luke's Gospel.
- 16:44So Luke writes, In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.
- 16:50He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword.
- 16:54And when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also.
- 16:59It was the Feast of Unleavened Bread. He had him taken into custody and put
- 17:04into prison, under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
- 17:09He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
- 17:13Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently
- 17:18being made to God on his behalf.
- 17:21On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter,
- 17:25secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers.
- 17:30While outside the door, guards kept watch on the prison.
- 17:34Suddenly, the angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell.
- 17:39He tapped Peter on the side, awakening him, saying, Get up quickly.
- 17:43The chains fell from his wrists.
- 17:46The angel said to him, Put on your belt and your sandals. He did so.
- 17:50Then he said to him, Put on your cloak and follow me.
- 17:53So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel
- 17:57was real, he thought he was seeing a vision.
- 18:00They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading
- 18:05out to the city, which opened for them by itself.
- 18:09They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him. The word of the Lord.
- 18:16So we see right there that God has a special plan for Peter,
- 18:21and he's protecting Peter to an extent that is really miraculous.
- 18:28So where does that lead us to? Well, we're going to go now to a letter from Paul to Timothy.
- 18:35And I'm going to try and get through this reading, and it's going to be difficult
- 18:38for me because this was one of the readings from my mother's funeral just two weeks ago.
- 18:44This was the second reading of her funeral mass that she selected like 10 years ago,
- 18:49which when I read through it, really amazed me because it was so close to where
- 18:56she was at this point just a few weeks ago in her own life.
- 19:00When she picked this out, she was still healthy and mobile. She hadn't had her ostomy surgery yet.
- 19:08She wasn't in a wheelchair. She wasn't even using a cane. And we went to a friend's
- 19:12funeral mass, and she loved the mass so much, she said, this is what I want for my funeral.
- 19:19And so I put the program aside, and we recreated it for my mom's funeral a couple weeks ago.
- 19:26So this reading meant a lot to her before she was sick.
- 19:31And what's interesting is this letter to Timothy was written towards the end of Paul's life.
- 19:37He's in captivity. He's nearly blind.
- 19:41He's needing others to write his letters for him, to scribe for him, and he's exhausted.
- 19:47He's been doing Christ's work now for years.
- 19:50He's traveled literally thousands of miles, and he knows his life's coming to an end.
- 19:57He's about to be executed, and this is what Paul writes.
- 20:02I, Paul, am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand.
- 20:09I have competed well. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
- 20:15From now on, the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord,
- 20:19the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me,
- 20:24but to all who have longed for His appearance.
- 20:27The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation
- 20:31might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it.
- 20:35And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.
- 20:38The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to His heavenly kingdom.
- 20:45To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen. The word of the Lord.
- 20:51So, Paul is experiencing his mortality.
- 20:54He understands he's at the end of his life, but he also understands he's done the best he can.
- 21:00And now he's awaiting the promise of heaven that Christ makes to all of us,
- 21:06to those who obey him and follow him.
- 21:09And Paul's saying, I did that. I did what was asked of me.
- 21:13I did it to the fullness of my ability, but now I'm exhausted and I realize
- 21:20the end of my life is coming and I look forward to the life to come in heaven.
- 21:25And that's how my mother passed. I know that's how my father-in-law passed with
- 21:29those same feelings, my dad.
- 21:31And if you right now are feeling those same things that Paul was feeling,
- 21:36have faith, have courage.
- 21:39This is but a journey for us. This is not our ending.
- 21:44Our death is simply an opening a door to a new life if you spent your life in Christ.
- 21:51And it's sometimes scary to look at that. I know myself, my worry isn't that
- 21:58God doesn't exist or heaven doesn't exist or Christ isn't our Savior.
- 22:03My fear is I haven't done enough. And I think that's the fear of a lot of people.
- 22:07They don't fear heaven. They don't fear God. They fear their own brokenness.
- 22:13And perhaps I haven't lived up to what I need to do.
- 22:17Perhaps I'm just, I'm not heaven material.
- 22:20I think that's what bothers a lot of people. But my mother and my dad and my
- 22:25father-in-law all had great confidence that they ran the good race,
- 22:30and they did everything that God asked them to do,
- 22:34and they were ready, and they faced their death without any fear.
- 22:38That doesn't mean they faced it without pain, but they faced it without fear.
- 22:43Again, knowing this is not our destination, our home and our destination has
- 22:48always been meant to be heaven.
- 22:50Our gospel reading is from Matthew, and this really sets up the papal authority within the church.
- 22:58When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
- 23:04who do people say that the Son of Man is?
- 23:07And they replied, some say John
- 23:09the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
- 23:14And he said to them, but who do you say that I am?
- 23:18And Simon Peter said in reply, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
- 23:24And Jesus said to him in reply, Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah,
- 23:28for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
- 23:33And so I say to you, You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,
- 23:38and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
- 23:43I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth
- 23:47shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in
- 23:50heaven. The gospel of the Lord.
- 23:53So, just a little catechesis here. So many people think of Peter with the keys
- 23:59to the gates of heaven. And this doesn't talk about the gates of heaven.
- 24:02It talks about the kingdom of God. It talks about the gates of hell.
- 24:06So often in art, cartoons, graphics, we see Peter sitting at these big wrought
- 24:13iron gates up on a cloud, like that's how you enter heaven is through these
- 24:17gates and Peter's standing guard.
- 24:19That's not what they're talking about here in the gospel. You have to remember
- 24:23that in biblical times, when the head of a household went on a journey,
- 24:27someone had to be in charge of the house while he was gone.
- 24:30Someone had to make sure the servants got paid, that the crops got taken care
- 24:35of, got harvested, got put into storage, that those crops in storage were distributed
- 24:40among the family or among the village at the right season in the right amounts.
- 24:45So this was, they would pick to do this, their most trusted servant and give them the keys to,
- 24:52to the granary, and the keys to the treasury, and the keys to the buildings, right, and the homes.
- 24:58That person was called the steward. So, Peter was given these keys,
- 25:04the stewardship of the church.
- 25:06Christ is saying, I'm going, but I'm coming back, and while I'm gone,
- 25:11you are my steward. You are in charge of my household.
- 25:15Well, Christ's household is the church.
- 25:18So, he made Peter the key keeper of the church.
- 25:23And so, all of Peter's successors have that same responsibility.
- 25:28But we're disciples and apostles too. We're stewards of the church.
- 25:34We have that same responsibility in our own parish to care for it like we care
- 25:39for our own home, to keep it secure, to keep it in good repair, right?
- 25:44So, remember that when you think about how you use your resources,
- 25:50your time, your talent, your treasures that you use on your own home,
- 25:54are you making those available to your church home, your parish home?
- 25:59Because we are all stewards of our own parish, just as the Pope is the steward
- 26:03of the universal church. I'm out of time.

- 26:18the characteristics of Peter and Paul.
- 26:19We're all being called to the service of Christ.
- 26:22And may Almighty God bless you, protect you from all evil, and bring you to
- 26:26everlasting life. Amen.
