- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. We're
- 0:17coming to you from Snarful Solutions Group, right
- 0:20here in Sacramento, California. Good morning.
- 0:22It is Thursday, January 15th, 2026. And for anyone
- 0:26local here in Sacramento, just a heads up, we
- 0:29are under a dense fog advisory until about 10
- 0:31a .m. this morning. So definitely be careful
- 0:33on the roads. And looking at the national picture,
- 0:35there's that clipper storm bringing snow to the
- 0:37upper Midwest and Great Lakes. But the real story
- 0:41today, honestly, is the wind. We're seeing gusts
- 0:43up to 60 miles per hour in the northern and central
- 0:46plains. Yeah, wild weather. Now, looking at the
- 0:49markets, things were a little mixed at yesterday's
- 0:52crows. The Dow Jones did edge up a bit. Just
- 0:54a little right, up about 0 .21%. Exactly. But
- 0:58the S &P 500, on the other hand, dipped just
- 1:01slightly, down about 0 .07%. So pretty flat,
- 1:04really. And Bitcoin saw a small pullback yesterday,
- 1:07a little over 1%. But I think the bigger story
- 1:09is the weekly change. It's still up almost 5
- 1:12% for the week. That's right. So that momentum
- 1:13is still there, despite the little daily dips.
- 1:16You know, that mix of up and down, that tension,
- 1:19it's actually a perfect setup for what we're
- 1:21covering today from our Morningstar report. We
- 1:23have three huge stories that really show what's
- 1:26happening in tech right now. We really do. We're
- 1:28talking about the high stakes battle for talent,
- 1:31the immediate legal dangers of AI, and some major
- 1:34moves in the hardware that powers it all. It's
- 1:36a lot to unpack. But before we get into the drama,
- 1:39we want to thank our first sponsor. Old Glory.
- 1:42Old Glory is just a fantastic store for music
- 1:44and sports fan merch. I mean, if you're looking
- 1:47for a gift, especially for that techie friend
- 1:49who seems to have everything, they have some
- 1:50really unique stuff. For sure. And they're offering
- 1:52our listeners a great deal. If you use the code
- 1:54SNARFL at checkout, you'll get 15 % off your
- 1:57entire purchase. You can find it all at oldglory
- 2:00.com. Again, that code is SNARFL. All right.
- 2:02Let's dive into that Morningstar report. The
- 2:04first story is, well, it's basically a corporate
- 2:07soap opera playing out in the AI world. It really
- 2:10is. It involves Thinking Machines Lab. That's
- 2:13the big AI startup founded by former OpenAI CTO
- 2:16Mara Marotti, and of course, OpenAI itself. Okay,
- 2:19so let's get this straight. Thinking Machines
- 2:21is already valued at $12 billion, right? And
- 2:25they just parted ways with their own co -founder
- 2:27and CTO Barrett Zuff. They did. And the reason
- 2:30is where it gets messy. A technology reporter,
- 2:32Kylie Robeson, she broke the story that his dismissal
- 2:35was for unethical conduct. unethical conduct.
- 2:39I mean, what does that even mean in this context?
- 2:41No. Sources told Wired he was accused of sharing
- 2:44confidential company info with rival firms. For
- 2:47a co -founder, that is a massive accusation,
- 2:50a huge betrayal. Wow. So they immediately replaced
- 2:53him with Sam with Chintala. But that's not even
- 2:56the biggest twist here. Not even close, because
- 2:58within hours of this news breaking, OpenAI's
- 3:01Zoff's old employer immediately rehired him,
- 3:04and another former colleague, Luke Metz, too.
- 3:06Wait, so he gets fired from a major competitor
- 3:09for allegedly sharing secrets, and OpenAI just
- 3:11says, welcome back? That's exactly what happened.
- 3:14OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fiji Symo, even
- 3:17put out a statement saying OpenAI does not share
- 3:19Moradi's concerns about Zoff. That is just astonishing.
- 3:23It's a public slap in the face. It feels like
- 3:25they're saying they just don't believe the allegations
- 3:27at all. Or that they just don't care. It shows
- 3:29you how fierce this talent war is. There are
- 3:32maybe a handful of people in the world who can
- 3:34build these models at that level. So companies
- 3:36are willing to take on massive legal risk just
- 3:39to get them on their team. It certainly looks
- 3:41that way. And remember, this isn't the first
- 3:44big loss for thinking machines. Another co -founder,
- 3:47Andrew Tulloch, he left for Metta last year.
- 3:49This is just brutal for a company trying to hit
- 3:52a 50 billion dollar valuation, losing your top
- 3:55architects like this and seeing them go straight
- 3:57to your biggest rivals. It just shows this is
- 4:00a zero sum game. It really is. It's all about
- 4:02the people. OK, so let's pivot from the drama
- 4:05in the boardroom to, well, a regulatory firestorm.
- 4:09Our second story is about the very real legal
- 4:12battles over generative AI. And this one hits
- 4:15close to home. California Attorney General Rob
- 4:18Bonta has launched an investigation into Elon
- 4:20Musk's XAI over its Grok model. And this isn't
- 4:24about some future hypothetical risk, is it? This
- 4:27is about harm that's happening right now. Exactly.
- 4:30The investigation is about the huge amount of
- 4:33non -consensual sexually explicit material being
- 4:36produced by Grok. We're talking about deep fake
- 4:39images, things like undressing women and children
- 4:43without their consent. That's horrifying. And
- 4:45these images are being used to harass people
- 4:47online. Yes. And what makes this even more concerning
- 4:50is a specific feature the State's Department
- 4:52of Justice pointed out. Grok apparently had something
- 4:55called spicy mode. They called it spicy mode.
- 4:58You're kidding. Not kidding. And it was reportedly
- 5:00used as a marketing point. Its whole purpose
- 5:03was to generate explicit content. That just shows
- 5:06a complete lack of foresight. or worse, a deliberate
- 5:09choice to ignore the potential for abuse. What's
- 5:12the scale of this problem? It seems to be pretty
- 5:14massive. An analysis cited by the state found
- 5:17that of 20 ,000 images generated by XAI between
- 5:20Christmas and New Year's, more than half showed
- 5:22people in minimal clothing. And some of those
- 5:25appeared to be children. That is sickening. And
- 5:27it explains why the AG's office is moving so
- 5:30aggressively. It does. Now, for some context
- 5:32here, A .G. Bonta has a history of being very
- 5:35proactive on AI safety. He's engaged with OpenAI
- 5:39before about risks to young people. Right. And
- 5:42it's worth noting he was appointed by Governor
- 5:44Newsom and he has a reputation for taking these
- 5:47high profile stances. He's faced political criticism
- 5:50for other positions, but his office has been
- 5:53really consistent about protecting Californians
- 5:55from what they see as AI risks. And this is probably
- 5:58the clearest example yet of generative AI leading
- 6:01to, you know, real world harassment and potentially
- 6:05very illegal activity. It puts the whole industry
- 6:07on notice. It's the perfect example of technology
- 6:10moving way faster than the ethical guardrails
- 6:12can be built. And that actually leads perfectly
- 6:14into our third story, which moves from the software
- 6:17down to the literal foundation of all of this.
- 6:20We're talking about a big consolidation in the
- 6:22semiconductor world. Global Foundries is buying
- 6:24a key piece of business from Synopsys. That's
- 6:27right. They're acquiring Synopsys' ARC processor
- 6:29IP solutions business, and they're rolling it
- 6:32into their own MIS business. Okay, so let's break
- 6:35that down for everyone. When we hear AI, we usually
- 6:38think of giant data centers. But the CEO of Global
- 6:41Foundries, Tim Breen, he said this is about physical
- 6:44AI. What does that mean? Physical AI is all about
- 6:47intelligence that's embedded directly into a
- 6:50device in the real world. So think about your
- 6:52smart security camera, a self -driving car, a
- 6:56robot in a factory. Things that need to make
- 6:59decisions on their own, right there on the spot,
- 7:01without checking in with the cloud. Precisely.
- 7:03It's called edge computing. And to do that, you
- 7:06need a chip with a specialized brain that's very
- 7:08powerful, but also very efficient with its energy
- 7:10use. And that's what this IP is for. These ARC
- 7:13processors and neural network processing units,
- 7:15or NPUs. Exactly. The NPU is designed to do one
- 7:19thing really well. run AI models quickly and
- 7:22with very little power. By buying ARC and combining
- 7:25it with their existing MIPS architecture, Global
- 7:28Foundries is essentially creating a much more
- 7:31powerful and complete toolkit for companies that
- 7:33want to build these kinds of smart devices. So
- 7:35they're trying to become the go -to shop for
- 7:36the brains behind physical AI. The MIPS CEO called
- 7:40it a great marriage. It is. It lowers the barrier.
- 7:44A customer doesn't have to go out and piece together
- 7:46all these different components anymore. They
- 7:47can just go to GF. Okay, but then why would Synopsys
- 7:51sell it? It sounds incredibly valuable. It is,
- 7:53but for Synopsys, this was what they called a
- 7:56portfolio management exercise. They're basically
- 7:59doubling down on their core business. Which is
- 8:01what exactly? It's the even more foundational
- 8:04stuff. Things like cell libraries and embedded
- 8:06memory. The kind of IP that is required in literally
- 8:10every advanced chip made today. It gives them
- 8:13a much broader market. So they sold a profitable
- 8:16piece to get even stronger in their main area.
- 8:18That's a really smart discipline move. Yeah.
- 8:21Now before we move on, you've had an amazing
- 8:23little bit of history about ARC and the source
- 8:25material. This is one of my favorite little connections.
- 8:28ARC was one of the original RSC companies, right?
- 8:31And back in the mid -90s, they got a huge boost
- 8:33from a partnership with Nintendo. Wait, don't
- 8:36tell me. Is this the Super FX chip? It is the
- 8:38chip that powered games like Star Fox and brought
- 8:423D graphics to the Super Nintendo. It was a fully
- 8:45programmable RISC microprocessor. Some people
- 8:49actually consider it the world's very first GPU.
- 8:52That's incredible. So the technology that helped
- 8:54us do a barrel roll in an R wing is now part
- 8:58of the foundation for self -driving cars. It's
- 9:00the same lineage now being used to power the
- 9:03next generation of physical AI. It just connects
- 9:06everything. It really does. All right, we're
- 9:08going to take one more quick break to thank our
- 9:09other sponsor, and then we will connect all these
- 9:11dots for you. Today's show is also brought to
- 9:15you by Skone, the premium golf shoe store. If
- 9:17you're looking for shoes that are stylish, incredibly
- 9:19comfortable, and perform on the course, you really
- 9:22have to check out Skone. And just like our other
- 9:24sponsors, they have a great offer. Use the promo
- 9:26code SNARFL at checkout for 15 % off your entire
- 9:30order. That's at skone .com. Again, the code
- 9:33is SNARFL for 15 % off. Okay, so let's recap
- 9:36the big takeaways today. First, The war for AI
- 9:40talent is getting faster and messier. The Barrett
- 9:43-Zoff situation proves that key people are now
- 9:45more valuable than traditional corporate caution.
- 9:49Second, the risks of generative AI are here,
- 9:52now. The investigation into XAI's Grok shows
- 9:55that when technology causes clear and serious
- 9:57real -world harm, regulators are ready and willing
- 10:00to step in and step in hard. And finally, the
- 10:03hardware that runs everything is consolidating.
- 10:06Global Foundry's acquisition of ARC is a huge
- 10:09bet on physical AI, positioning them to be a
- 10:12key player in the smart devices that will shape
- 10:14our future. Which brings us to our final thought
- 10:16for you to consider today. When you see the speed
- 10:19of these talent wars and you see companies marketing
- 10:22features like Spicy Mode, and then you compare
- 10:24that to the much slower pace of law and regulation,
- 10:28it really makes you wonder. Is it even possible
- 10:30for our legal and ethical rules to keep up with
- 10:33the technology that's advancing this quickly?
- 10:35It's the central question, isn't it? I think
- 10:37it is. We're here to help at Snarful, so reach
- 10:39out on our website if you have any more questions.
- 10:44That's a wrap on today's top stories. Remember,
- 10:47tech doesn't have to be complicated, and we're
