- 0:20Bible yourself or listening to today's read along episode in
- 0:23this podcast feed. If you haven't done that yet,
- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28When you're ready, let's dive into God's Word.
- 0:31Together at the end of Mark Chapter 9,
- 0:45Jesus gives a strong warning against the person who would
- 0:48cause someone else to stumble in his relationship with Jesus,
- 0:52saying whoever causes one of these little ones who believed
- 0:55to stumble, it would be better for him if with a heavy
- 0:58millstone hung around his neck, he'd been cast into the sea.
- 1:02Jesus takes very seriously the sin of leading someone else
- 1:05astray. In this warning.
- 1:07There's a deeper reality that we must come to grips with.
- 1:11We do not live the Christian life in isolation.
- 1:14Often times, especially in the West where we place a high value
- 1:17on independence and self-sufficiency, we speak about
- 1:20our faith as if it is only personal.
- 1:22It is only a relationship between US and God.
- 1:25And while that is true in the sense that we cannot piggyback
- 1:28onto someone else's faith, and we are personally accountable to
- 1:31God for our actions, we can't lose sight of the reality that
- 1:35our faith is not to be lived out in solitude.
- 1:38In this passage, we see that playing out in the fact that we
- 1:41are all influencers. Like it or not, there are others
- 1:45who will be impacted and affected by how you live, how
- 1:49you speak, how you carry out your walk with the Lord.
- 1:52And that matters. When we live contrary to the
- 1:55commands of Scripture and contrary to the leading of the
- 1:58Holy Spirit, we're not only taking ourselves off track,
- 2:02we're often leading others down that same destructive road.
- 2:05And in the same way, when we walk in humility and obedience
- 2:08and love and faithfulness, we point others to the truth of the
- 2:12gospel. We encourage others to follow
- 2:15Jesus. And here's the kicker.
- 2:18This verse is not a call to appear holy.
- 2:21This is not an instruction to make sure that you're on your
- 2:23best behavior when other people are watching.
- 2:26No, the truth is that who we are in the dark will come out in the
- 2:31way we live in the light. Our true motives, thoughts, and
- 2:34actions will reveal themselves. And so we must press into
- 2:39Christ. We must be changed in His
- 2:41presence. We must experience His
- 2:43transformative power day by day in our lives, and when we do,
- 2:49our lives will be changed, but so will the lives of those who,
- 2:53whether we know it or not, are watching us.
