- 0:00This one's for everyone who's ever wondered, can I love my neighbor without
- 0:04making them a casserole? Because let's be honest, church
- 0:07culture sometimes makes it feel like the most sacred spiritual act
- 0:11is signing up for a meal train before your coffee even kicks in.
- 0:15Welcome to Messy Advice for People Who Care, a summer series from
- 0:19Journey with Care to anyone who's ever said yes before thinking it through and then
- 0:22wondering what they just signed up for. We're talking about caregiving,
- 0:26boundaries, burnout, and the not so clear moments of loving others
- 0:30well, minus the formulas. This is Johan on
- 0:34the edge of helpful because someone has to answer the hard questions,
- 0:38and apparently it's me.
- 0:42We've all felt the weight of care, whether it's in ministry,
- 0:46family, work, or just trying to be a decent human
- 0:50being. And sometimes that weight turns into something we were
- 0:53never meant to carry. Today's question gets right into the
- 0:57heart of that tension. How do I show up for
- 1:01others without always feeling like I'm responsible for fixing
- 1:04everything? Now that's a big one, and,
- 1:08honestly, a lot of us are asking the same thing.
- 1:11According to Stats Canada, nearly one in four Canadians, that's
- 1:15around 8,000,000 people, provided some form of unpaid
- 1:18caregiving, and more than half of them reported feeling tired,
- 1:22anxious, or overwhelmed by it. So, yeah, statistically
- 1:26speaking, if you're feeling overwhelmed, it might just mean that you're doing
- 1:30life in Canada correctly. But let's zoom in on what it
- 1:34actually feels like. Now my first piece of advice
- 1:38would be delete the phrase, just let me know if you need anything
- 1:41from your vocabulary. It's vague, passive, and
- 1:45emotionally loaded. And if you do let them know, you're
- 1:49probably gonna panic. Picture this. You're in the
- 1:52church lobby after service. Someone shares that they're having a hard
- 1:56week. You nod, smile, and suddenly feel that pressure
- 2:00building. Should I offer help? Should I bring a meal?
- 2:03Should I be doing more? That moment, that's compassion
- 2:08spiked with panic and seasoned with a little savior complex.
- 2:12We've all felt it. It's the quiet assumption that love
- 2:15equals action equals fixing equals exhaustion.
- 2:20But does it? Let's get biblical.
- 2:23Biblical. This brought me back to Mark one.
- 2:28Jesus had been healing the sick, casting out demons, meeting
- 2:31real urgent needs, and the crowds are still
- 2:35pressing in. And the next morning, Jesus
- 2:38disappears. The disciples go on a full manhunt.
- 2:42And when they finally find him withdrawn from the crowd and praying, they
- 2:46say, everyone's looking for you. And Jesus says,
- 2:50well, let's go somewhere else. You see, Jesus doesn't
- 2:54rush to meet every need. He doesn't react to that
- 2:57pressure that was put on him. He chooses what's next,
- 3:02not out of guilt, but out of purpose. That's not
- 3:05indifference, it's clarity. Jesus shows us that love
- 3:09isn't always about doing more. Sometimes it's about doing what's
- 3:13right and letting go of the rest. So maybe the question
- 3:16for you isn't, am I doing enough? Maybe it's,
- 3:20am I doing what's mine to do? This week, try showing
- 3:24up in love, but with honesty, not from guilt and not from
- 3:27pressure. And if that sounds impossible, maybe that's where the
- 3:31spirit meets us, in the pause between urgency and
- 3:35obligation. Love becomes more sustainable when it's guided
- 3:38by purpose, not pressure. And, hey, if that hits
- 3:42close to home, you're not alone. These aren't just questions that we ask
- 3:46on the mic. They're the kind that live in the background of a lot of
- 3:49care filled lives. And if you wanna join the conversation,
- 3:53come join us on the Care Impact podcast group on Facebook.
- 3:57Until next time, keep loving, keep laughing, and set the
- 4:00casserole down unless it's already in the oven, in which case,
- 4:04bless you and remember to stay curious.
