- 0:13He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready.
- 0:29Let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:44In John chapter 20, we are given yet another Gospel account of
- 0:47the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- 0:49We see the empty tomb. We see Jesus reveal himself to
- 0:52Mary Magdalene and then to his disciples.
- 0:54He is alive. Of all the miracles we've seen
- 0:57Jesus perform up to this point, this is the greatest of all, His
- 1:01own victory over death through his resurrection.
- 1:04Where I want us to spend our time today, though, is in the
- 1:06last two verses of this chapter. Here John gives us his purpose
- 1:11in writing the book. He lets us in on why he wrote
- 1:13this gospel account, and in particular why he wrote it in
- 1:17the way he did. Listen to these two verses.
- 1:20Therefore, many other signs Jesus also performed in the
- 1:23presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book,
- 1:26but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus
- 1:29is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have
- 1:33life in His name. John tells us that this account
- 1:36is not an exhaustive account of the life of Jesus.
- 1:39That is not his purpose. In fact, he will tell us in the
- 1:42next chapter that if all that Jesus did was to be written in
- 1:45detail, the whole world could not contain the books that would
- 1:48be written. So why did John write the book
- 1:51that he did? He wrote these things, these
- 1:54particular teachings, signs and counters so that his readers
- 1:58might do one thing, that you and I might respond in one
- 2:02particular way to Jesus, that we might believe faith.
- 2:07That is what John is trying to stir us up towards.
- 2:10He wrote these 21 chapters so that we may believe that Jesus
- 2:14is the Christ, the Son of God. And what will happen if we
- 2:17possess that faith? What will be accomplished for us
- 2:20if we believe Jesus to be who He says He is?
- 2:24We will have life in His name. The tune hasn't changed since
- 2:28John 1/4. In him was life, and the life
- 2:31was the light of men. It hasn't changed since John
- 2:34316. For God so loved the world that
- 2:36he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him
- 2:40shall not perish, but have eternal life.
- 2:42It hasn't changed since John 1010.
- 2:44The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
- 2:47I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
- 2:51Or John 1125, I am the resurrection and the life.
- 2:55He who believes in me will live even if he dies.
- 2:58Or John 14, six. I am the way and the truth and
- 3:02the life. No man comes to the Father, but
- 3:05through me Jesus came and lived a perfect life and died the
- 3:09death that we deserve, and rose again after three days
- 3:12conquering sin and death so that you and I, if we put our faith
- 3:16and hope and trust in Him, could have life, real, eternal,
- 3:20abundant life in the presence of God forever.
- 3:23That is why Jesus came and that is why John wrote the book.
- 3:27So don't miss the main thing, Don't miss Jesus.
- 3:30Don't miss out on the life that he offers freely to you and to
- 3:34me today. Believe in Jesus and receive the
- 3:38life that is found only in Him.
