Transcript
- 0:14Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Alliance
- 0:18and Driving. Here we chat about all things
- 0:22real life, real teaching, and real talk about living a life
- 0:25that you're proud of both inside and outside of the classroom.
- 0:31And today I really want to remind you of something
- 0:33important. You are allowed to want more.
- 0:38Now this isn't because you're ungrateful and it's not because
- 0:41you're greedy, but because your time, your energy and your well
- 0:46being matters and you deserve a life that feels good to you.
- 0:51So it's time to grab your coffee, take a deep breath, and
- 0:55let's just dive on in. I want to be honest.
- 0:58Well, when am I not honest with you?
- 0:59But honestly, have you seen the cost of kids sport lately?
- 1:05Like seriously? Or is it just my children
- 1:07because I have two doing lots of things at the same time?
- 1:09I mean, obviously maybe you don't even have kids, but
- 1:12signing up for a season of something, even if you play
- 1:15sports. So put this in perspective.
- 1:17I play sport. Both of my kids do different
- 1:20sports and multiple sports to be exact.
- 1:22It all adds up like for me to be able to play the cost of like
- 1:27turf fees, training fees, uniform Subs, like your sub fees
- 1:33to the club that you play for the fees for insurance purposes.
- 1:36Like they all add up. And while we love what we do as
- 1:41teachers, let's not pretend that teaching alone always pays the
- 1:44bills and feeds our souls the way that we need it to.
- 1:49So I'm here to tell you this loud and clear that you are
- 1:53allowed to want more. You're allowed to explore
- 1:57something outside of the teaching space and you are
- 2:00allowed to dream big and you are absolutely allowed to start
- 2:05something of your own, something that brings you joy,
- 2:08flexibility, and maybe a little extra income too.
- 2:12I mean, hello, hi podcast. This actually doesn't make me
- 2:15any money, just let me make that clear.
- 2:17But it is a passion project that I love putting my time and
- 2:20energy into. If you watched or listened to
- 2:24the podcast a while back that Taylor Swift starred in with the
- 2:28Kelsey Brothers where she talked about think of your energy as
- 2:32being expensive and it's like a luxury item.
- 2:36So not everyone gets to have that.
- 2:38OK? So you get to choose what you
- 2:41are going to put your energy into.
- 2:44So I'm going to touch on side hustle life.
- 2:47Just let me be honest. Yep, I do have a side hustle.
- 2:50Actually, I've got a few. No, I'm not raking in six
- 2:54figures or anything like that yet, but yes, I do have these
- 2:59because it helps and it's also because I care.
- 3:03As I said, this podcast is 100% a passion projects.
- 3:08I do not get paid to do it in any way, shape or form.
- 3:11I make time for it in my life because I want to help other
- 3:15teachers feel less alone. I want you to feel sane.
- 3:19I don't know, maybe one day I'll get some sponsors, but that's
- 3:22not why I do it. I do it because I have been
- 3:25there or I'm actually currently here, if that made sense.
- 3:29But the side sort of stuff that I do is stuff around health
- 3:33because it has actually helped me.
- 3:36And when you find something that supports you that much, why
- 3:40wouldn't you want to share it? And if you make money while
- 3:42doing it, I guess that's just a bonus.
- 3:45It's not about pushing sales or pushing products or becoming
- 3:49someone that you're not. It's about recognising the life
- 3:53that you want. But this is completely allowed.
- 3:56We are so utterly and truly blessed to have a salary.
- 4:00But that should not be your ceiling, OK?
- 4:04Like yes, that is as high at one point that you can go, but we
- 4:07should be able to burst out above our ceiling and still have
- 4:12a life that we love. It's a bit of an identity shift
- 4:15because I've told you this before that you are more than
- 4:18your job title. We get so boxed in as teachers
- 4:23and educators like we absolutely can't be anything else.
- 4:26But you are not just a teacher. You are a multi passionate,
- 4:30powerful woman or man who can also be a writer, a speaker, a
- 4:36mentor, a business owner, a course creator, a podcast host,
- 4:42an Etsy seller, what you name it.
- 4:45Teaching might be part of your identity, but it doesn't have to
- 4:49be your whole identity. You're allowed to be curious
- 4:53about more. It's for me.
- 4:57It's literally about time too. You want more time at home, more
- 5:01flexibility, or more mental space.
- 5:03That's not selfish, that's just being smart.
- 5:06Your time is one of your most valuable resources and after the
- 5:12last few years that we've all had, it's never been clearer
- 5:16that time is everything. You don't get that time back.
- 5:21If you want to work part time, amazing, go do it.
- 5:24If you want to start a little business to make that
- 5:26financially possible for you, let's chat.
- 5:29You want to have more time for your kids, your partner,
- 5:32yourself? Yes, you 100% deserve that.
- 5:37So I'm going to give you options.
- 5:39We're just going to talk options.
- 5:41Maybe you're still sitting here thinking, I just don't know
- 5:43where to start. Well, that's where I come in.
- 5:46There are so many just little ways that you could start
- 5:49something that works for you that does not take over your
- 5:51life or add pressure, but instead will give you some of
- 5:54your energy back. You might go and start that
- 5:57Instagram page that you've been thinking about to give more
- 6:01people some inspiration or something like that.
- 6:04You might launch an Etsy store with something that you already
- 6:07love to do or make. I know those teachers that have
- 6:10those hobbies on the side, like knitting or painting.
- 6:13You could be making money off your passion projects, your
- 6:17hobbies, so why not do that? If it doesn't 'cause you extra
- 6:21pressure or stress. You could share your journey
- 6:24with a product that you already use, which is pretty much what I
- 6:28do with my health businesses. I'm just talking about stuff
- 6:31that I use for me, for my health, and the fact that other
- 6:34people want to join that party too.
- 6:36Fantastic, let's go, let's talk. But that is purely because I
- 6:41consistently use those products and I want to share them with
- 6:45other people to help them feel good and amazing too.
- 6:48You might create resources and sell them online.
- 6:50Hello Teacherspayteachers, what is it there for?
- 6:54It is there for you as a teacher.
- 6:56If you've already made that unit, why not upload it and make
- 6:59a bit of a profit on sharing your work with other people and
- 7:03making their lives easier in the process?
- 7:06You could start a blog or a podcast to connect with others.
- 7:09Eventually you could like start making money off it if you were
- 7:13to get yourself some sponsors or you have connections or anything
- 7:15like that. But honestly, if you're curious
- 7:18about coaching or mentoring around this space, send me a
- 7:21message. You can find me on Instagram and
- 7:24Facebook. Just search Align and Thriving
- 7:25for teachers. The links are always in the show
- 7:27notes, but that is what I just wanted to touch on.
- 7:33I just don't want you to think that when you see teachers
- 7:36putting themselves out there, they're not being greedy, OK?
- 7:40The cost of living is so high now that we are struggling, so
- 7:48why can't we look for other sources of income to help
- 7:53support ourselves when we are struggling?
- 7:55It's not the same as what it used to be when our wonderful
- 7:58parents could go and buy a block for $80,000 and build a house
- 8:04for maybe 150 like that. Now you would struggle to find
- 8:10any block of land in that sort of space.
- 8:13I remember talking to someone who about 25 years ago bought a
- 8:17block for $7000 and then they built their house.
- 8:21The end of their bill was like 55 grand.
- 8:24And I'm just looking at them dumbfounded like wow, and that's
- 8:27still the house you live in now and they're renovating.
- 8:29And now they're like, wow, cost of everything so expensive.
- 8:32Like but you built that for 55 grand.
- 8:35It's completely different. I remember my mom actually found
- 8:39one of her first cheques for getting paid as a teacher.
- 8:43Obviously she started a little while ago and it was like 7 and
- 8:47a half, $1000. And that was a really, really
- 8:51high salary. And now you look at what we're
- 8:55on and it varies state by state, but you just think, I don't
- 8:59know. I, I just have those thoughts
- 9:01where I am so thankful that I have a consistent income, but at
- 9:04the same time I do get a little bit jealous and I have to think,
- 9:09no, that's OK, They can have that.
- 9:11When you've got personal assistance to business owners
- 9:15that are earning way more and getting free meals, free
- 9:18accommodation, like all these perks with their job.
- 9:21And I'm going, oh, that looks so tempting.
- 9:24But then you remember your why and what you are doing.
- 9:27So this is more or less my way of supporting me to continue
- 9:31doing what I love to do. But it means that I can do it
- 9:35happily and not have to leave to go find other things because
- 9:39I've got other stuff going on outside that works while I
- 9:42sleep. So that I can actually just
- 9:44focus on my wife and my teaching because that is my passion and I
- 9:46love to do it and I love to do this.
- 9:48I love to share with people just to try and help more people on
- 9:52their journey. So for me, obviously I deal in
- 9:55health because it works hand in hand.
- 9:57Our health is our wealth. I can honestly say that looking
- 10:01after my own health has changed everything for me.
- 10:05I in teaching, you're exposed to everything.
- 10:08I used to catch every single bug.
- 10:10I felt drained all the time and I would just survive through
- 10:16each term. But now I feel strong.
- 10:20I am showing up and I am fending off sickness left right and
- 10:24centre. Like I the only days I've had
- 10:26off lately when my husband doesn't take them off is when my
- 10:30kids are sick. And even then like as I said, my
- 10:33hubby will usually take the first one off, bless him because
- 10:36they actually rest better when he's home because they're bored.
- 10:39He doesn't want to entertain their thoughts of let's watch a
- 10:41movie or let's do this. He's like no you're sick, you,
- 10:43you sleep, you rest. That's what your body needs and
- 10:46and that's what he does and it works.
- 10:47But I, I haven't touched wood, been sick.
- 10:50Like I've had gluten episodes from having gluten, being a
- 10:53celiac, but that is all. Any sort of hint of sickness,
- 10:57it's sort of just melted away. I've just gone to bed a little
- 11:00bit earlier and then I wake up the next day and I'm fine.
- 11:04Usually if you would stay home with your children, you'd pick
- 11:06up the bugs off them as well. And we just don't.
- 11:09In our house, we're so much happier and healthier because
- 11:13we've done something for our own health as a family and that's
- 11:16just a bonus that we get to it. It basically just pays for the
- 11:20daughter's gymnastics. So why not be healthy and and
- 11:24pay for one thing too? But it all started because I
- 11:27gave myself permission to try something new.
- 11:30And then from there, and this is the way it is in teaching is you
- 11:33have that buy in of other people in your family because they see
- 11:36what you're doing and they're like, wow, what's she on?
- 11:39I would like what she's having. And then it flows on from there.
- 11:42So that was pretty much how that whole system has worked for me
- 11:46is, oh, what are they doing? I want to do that too, because
- 11:48it all works together. So you, you're worth it.
- 11:54If your heart is calling you to go try something, go do it.
- 12:00If your soul is just nudging you to create something, go there.
- 12:05If your energy is screaming I want more than this, you need to
- 12:09listen. You don't need anyone's
- 12:12permission but your own. And if you need a little bit of
- 12:16encouragement, you've got me right here cheering you on.
- 12:19Because that's what I'm here for.
- 12:21And if you listen to anyone like Mel Robbins, she will tell you
- 12:25what why do you care what other people think?
- 12:27The only person that matters and what they think is you.
- 12:30It is your body. It is your choice.
- 12:32They are your decisions. You do what works for you
- 12:37because that is what life is all about.
- 12:40And you've got to start like if you've got that thought about
- 12:44the past where you might be a bit angry or upset or annoyed,
- 12:49like you've got to release that from your past because it will
- 12:53set you free in the in the present.
- 12:55So if things maybe you tried something before and it wasn't
- 12:58successful, don't hold on to that.
- 13:00This is a new day and age. There's lots of new things.
- 13:04You can branch out and do new things and try new things, but
- 13:07nothing has to take away from your time with your family or
- 13:10your work or anything like that. We are going to make things work
- 13:12for you. So I know this one was a little
- 13:15bit random, but I think it was just a bit of reassurance for
- 13:18those people who are arming and aring or are doing more than one
- 13:21thing. I have lots of friends that do
- 13:23more than one thing and they are teachers too.
- 13:26OK, it's fine. We just need to give ourselves
- 13:30permission to do so. So thank you again for hanging
- 13:34out with me today. And if this episode spoke to
- 13:36you, I would love for you to share it with your teacher,
- 13:38friends or a colleague or find me on Instagram and Facebook and
- 13:42chat about your dreams with me, side hustles or anything in
- 13:44between. Because remember and I'm, I
- 13:47wasn't trying to sell you anything either.
- 13:49This is not a sales post. This is just me sharing ideas
- 13:53with you. I'm being honest because I'm
- 13:55real, I'm raw, I'm honest and that's what you're always going
- 13:57to get because as I said in many, many previous posts,
- 14:01podcast is that I cannot lie. It just does not work for me.
- 14:05So remember that this is your time, it's your health and it's
- 14:09your passions. They all matter and you are
- 14:12allowed to want more and to do more.
- 14:16So please, if you've enjoyed this episode, please give it a
- 14:19rating, give it a review, do whatever you have to do, share
- 14:22it because the more that we're getting this information out
- 14:25there to people, the more people we can help because that's what
- 14:28I'm here for. I started this passion project
- 14:30as a way to help other educators out there hear, know and
- 14:35understand what is really possible and things that you
- 14:37might need to hear. And, and it just might hit the
- 14:42nail right on the head for you at the moment.
- 14:44This might be the message that you need to hear.
- 14:46So please send me a message, talk to me.
- 14:49I'm always here. But until next time and the next
- 14:52podcast that you listen to, whatever that may be, I hope
- 14:56that you stay aligned and you keep thriving towards your
- 15:00goals, whatever they may be. They are amazing and you are
- 15:04amazing and you don't need permission.
- 15:06You're allowed to want more. So go out and have the best day,
- 15:11night, evening, whatever it is, and I'll talk to you again next
- 15:14time. Bye, guys.
