Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / First Northeast Ultra 8 Gold Skyrunner Joe Palisi
Transcript
- 0:00OK guys, this week we sat down with Joe Palisi.
- 0:03He became the first Gold Sky runner on the Northeast Ultra 88
- 0:09of the gnarliest, toughest single day hikes in the
- 0:11Northeast. You got the Prezi traverse, the
- 0:14Pemi Loop, Mahoussic Traverse, Devil's Path Great Range
- 0:18traverse, Saranac 6, Cranberry 50, and the Taconic Crest
- 0:24traverse. He finished all eight of these
- 0:26hikes in summer and in winter, and he did it under the time
- 0:31cutoff to become the Gold Skyrunner.
- 0:34So there's a bunch of different levels of patches and different
- 0:36times to complete these the Northeast Ultra Ache hikes.
- 0:40He was the first one to do it. And let me just tell you, I
- 0:43mean, if you've been on the the hikes, you know that they're
- 0:46gnarly. I haven't been on all of them,
- 0:48but the doing some of these hikes in the winter on trails
- 0:52that nobody goes on, nobody breaks out in New England winter
- 0:57conditions. He had some crazy stories, some
- 1:00gnarly stories, a couple DNFS, but he came back, he bounced
- 1:04back and he he was the first guy crazy enough, cool enough, crazy
- 1:08enough to do all 8 hikes in summer and winter under the time
- 1:12cut off. So it's a good interview.
- 1:14Stay tuned. After the interview, I'm going
- 1:19to do some race preview, some race results from the New
- 1:23England ultra scene. I'm going to talk about my
- 1:26recent run and the trail conditions right now in New
- 1:30Hampshire, and then I'm going to do a little bit of a.
- 1:33Dream story I had a. Little bit of a weird dream that
- 1:36kind of made me think about some things.
- 1:39I don't know if it's going to be crazy, but you know, stick with
- 1:42me for some dream talk at the end of it.
- 1:44But that's what we got today. Hopefully you guys enjoy.
- 1:48Here's Joe. OK, Joe Palisi, the first
- 1:53Northeast Ultra 8 Golden Sky Runner finisher.
- 1:57So I saw your post on Instagram. It just kind of like popped up.
- 2:01I known about the Northeast Ultra 8, like the different
- 2:04hikes that we'll get into. But I saw it pop up and I'm
- 2:07like, oh, what is this? I didn't really know the full
- 2:09different levels. So I start looking into it and
- 2:12realize some of these heights and some of these winter what it
- 2:15took to finish this. So I just want to like jump
- 2:18right into it. Can you be like the spokesperson
- 2:21for the Northeast Ultra 8, the different levels and like how
- 2:24you got started with all that stuff?
- 2:26Yeah, absolutely. So the Northeast Ultra 8 is just
- 2:30a kind of collection of eight big difficult routes in the
- 2:35Northeast. And there's there's 3 levels.
- 2:37There's like the Northeast 8, which is there's no time limit
- 2:40to do any of them. Then there's the Ultra 8, which
- 2:43is the standard. So you have 24 hours to complete
- 2:45each and then there's the Skyrunner which just gives
- 2:48stricter cut off times. So like 10 hours ish in the
- 2:52winter, in the summer and like you know, 14 to 20 in the winter
- 2:57and so. That the regular Skyrunner is is
- 3:01just you have to do a winter summer, but it's just stricter
- 3:04than 24 hours. Yeah, it's yeah.
- 3:06So the the ultra is just sub 24 and then the Skyrunner is like
- 3:12each individual trail or route has its own cut off.
- 3:16OK, OK. So like you know, Prezi is like
- 3:1910 hours for the summer and like 14 hours for the winter.
- 3:23And then you know, the harder ones are are a bit longer.
- 3:26OK, gotcha. And then what's the golden
- 3:28Skyrunner? So the golden Skyrunner is you
- 3:31have to do them all in the winter and in the normal summer
- 3:34version. OK, gotcha.
- 3:36So 8 hikes I know Prezi Pemi Mahoussa.
- 3:40Yep. Are the ones in New Hampshire at
- 3:43least New Hampshire, Maine and then great range traverse?
- 3:46Yep. So in the Dax Great range,
- 3:48traverse the Cranberry 50 and the Saranac 6, and then Devil's
- 3:54Path is in the Catskills. OK, gotcha, gotcha.
- 3:56And then the Taconic Crest traverse which is like out
- 3:59Western Mass and the Taconics. Gotcha.
- 4:01OK, cool. OK, So what was your first hike?
- 4:05How did you did you know going into these things?
- 4:07We kind of chat a little bit before this, you did the long or
- 4:10you did some hiking kind of on a whim with the buddy, you do the
- 4:12long trail. But like, did you know you just
- 4:15saw these hikes and we're like, oh, this is epic, let's try
- 4:17some. And then you learned about it.
- 4:19Is that how it happened? Yeah, I, I mean, I'd heard of
- 4:22the list before. I wasn't really trying to go for
- 4:25it or anything, but like, just looking at the website, I was
- 4:29really intrigued and I saw that not many people had done like
- 4:33the sky renter version. And, you know, I figured I might
- 4:37as well like, give it a shot, right?
- 4:38I'm I've just been hiking a bit and feel like I'm decently fast,
- 4:44so why not give it a try, Yeah? Yeah, clearly.
- 4:47Yeah. Yeah, so.
- 4:49So the first one I did actually for the for the normal, not
- 4:52winter Skyrunner was the Devil's Path was the first Skyrunner I
- 4:57did. OK, I'd done the TCT and the
- 4:59Prezi and the Pammy before, but not in skyrunner time.
- 5:02Yeah, and you know, but Devil's Path was the first Summer
- 5:07Skyrunner, and then the first Winter Skyrunner I did was also
- 5:10Devil's Path, actually. OK.
- 5:11Yeah. So what are the times?
- 5:14I was looking at the chart, Do you know all the times for each
- 5:16of the routes? Like could you pull all that
- 5:18today or? Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 5:20What's? The devil's path summer and
- 5:22winter times. So for the summer it's 10 hours
- 5:25and then for the winter it's 14 hours.
- 5:27OK. Yeah, nice.
- 5:29And is that something? That gets a lot of.
- 5:30Action I'm really intrigued about some of these winter
- 5:33missions you went on because I'm sure that some of these didn't
- 5:36get broken out or whatever. No.
- 5:38So the winter, the devil's path, how did that one go?
- 5:41Was that your first winter, you said?
- 5:43Yes. First successful winter.
- 5:45Successful winter, Yeah. Is that does that get?
- 5:48Broken out Foley was there. You know, sections where you
- 5:51really had to slog. Like how did the first one go?
- 5:53Yeah, so the first one was like mid January and there was there
- 5:59was a bit of snow. We actually did the whole thing
- 6:02in micro spikes, OK, didn't even pull out snowshoes and we saw a
- 6:06lot of people. So it's a popular area of the
- 6:08Catskills. All those mountains are are on
- 6:11the more popular side down there.
- 6:14That was actually with my buddy Thomas or OK, who's I?
- 6:18I'll talk about him more, but he actually is was like a big key
- 6:22player in getting some of these done too nice and.
- 6:26I've messaged with him actually. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:28And I think I remember this winter he had mentioned like,
- 6:30oh, I'm going to do the Mahoussic traverse this weekend.
- 6:32I was thinking like, what? So was that one that he had went
- 6:35out with you? On yes, yeah, yeah.
- 6:37Yeah. So that was like kind of like
- 6:38these winter missions. I'm thinking like, who's going
- 6:40out here doing this stuff? OK.
- 6:42Yeah, so Thomas is like, he's he's, he's awesome.
- 6:45I mean, he's like he he puts put the idea in my head to go for
- 6:50the winter sky runner too. And yeah.
- 6:52And he was the one that asked me yo, like, let's go do, let's go
- 6:56do devils. And I was like, dude, I don't
- 6:58know. You know, like these in the
- 7:00summer are like already they're they're already plenty.
- 7:03Yeah. And then in the winter, it's.
- 7:05Yeah. Well, so are you like a lot of
- 7:07these? You probably bringing snowshoes,
- 7:09yes, but you're also bringing like a ton of water I'm
- 7:11assuming. Like your packs are just huge.
- 7:13Oh yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 7:15And that's completely, like, one of the big things that I had in
- 7:19my mind for this challenge was like, I never wanted to
- 7:21sacrifice, like, safety or gear for speed.
- 7:24Yeah. Because, I mean, you hear horror
- 7:26stories and there's been tragedies.
- 7:28Yeah. You know, of people that have
- 7:30gone out, you know, lightweight in a in an effort to set some
- 7:34really fast, super cool time. Yeah.
- 7:37And then like something tragic happens, you get injured or
- 7:40whatever and no one's coming to save you, especially in the
- 7:42winter. Yeah, that is, that is a good
- 7:44point. And it's like, especially when
- 7:46you're. Yeah, you're going for time and
- 7:48you're pushing your your body sometimes, you know, it's cool
- 7:51to see people push, but when you're out there totally alone,
- 7:55you know, sub 0 attempts or whatever it may be, that
- 7:57definitely gets a little bit dicey.
- 7:59Oh yeah, yeah. So it's good obviously, that you
- 8:02were thinking ahead. Well, prepared 10 essentials.
- 8:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:06So you did the devil's path. How did that one go?
- 8:08Were you like, I can't do all eight of these?
- 8:10Or were you like, OK, OK. I was definitely struggling
- 8:13towards the end. I didn't eat nearly enough.
- 8:16I almost, I kind of went into it with more like a running
- 8:19mentality like that we were going to be moving fast and it's
- 8:22just not the same as the summer like where you can move fast in
- 8:25the summer. You can't really do that in the
- 8:28winter usually unless, unless it's like a highway.
- 8:30Yeah. And even that like we were in
- 8:32Micra's the whole time. So looking back on it wasn't
- 8:35that bad. Yeah.
- 8:36But I I just I don't know if I was quite ready for just how
- 8:41much longer and like more energy like intensive the the day was
- 8:46going to be. Yeah, you know.
- 8:48Yeah, it really. Does take it out of you because
- 8:50like you're saying, if it's not packed highway, if it's even a
- 8:53little bit of loose snow, you're losing energy at every step,
- 8:56right? Yeah.
- 8:57You got to carry more stuff the whole the whole thing.
- 8:59Sure. And the cold temperatures too.
- 9:01They suck the energy right out. Yeah.
- 9:04Yeah. OK.
- 9:04So that was what year was that? That was 20.
- 9:08That was actually the beginning of last year, so early 2025.
- 9:11OK, so you knocked all these out?
- 9:13Last year and this year. Last year and this year.
- 9:15OK, so you do Devil's path in the winter.
- 9:17Now did you only have one summer at the going into last winter or
- 9:21did you do more that summer after Devil's Path summer?
- 9:24So I I did Devil's Path summer in like fall of 2024.
- 9:30OK, I consider it summer still. I mean, yeah, yeah, there's no
- 9:32snow or. Anything.
- 9:33Oh yeah. So it's not like in the season
- 9:35summer, it's just no snow. Yeah, no snow.
- 9:38Yeah. Yeah, no snow like or not
- 9:39winter. Not winter, you know, the normal
- 9:4140 or It was actually November of 2023 that I did Devil's Path
- 9:45the first time, I think. OK, but yeah.
- 9:47And then that next summer, I actually finished all the rest
- 9:51of the summer Skyrunner. OK, nice.
- 9:53So yeah. OK, so sub 10 devil's path
- 9:56summer, Sub 14 Devil's path winter, Yeah.
- 10:00What was your next one in the summer that you went for that
- 10:03when you when you cleared them all?
- 10:05The next one was the TCT Tatonic Crest Trail.
- 10:09So that one I did in the summer or it was the spring of 2024, so
- 10:14that next year and that one's actually like I like to do it in
- 10:19the spring. I've now done it a couple times
- 10:23because it's more near where I live and it's, it gets really
- 10:27overgrown in the summer. And so spring is good and fall
- 10:31is good because like you're not dealing with all the ferns and
- 10:34the I've heard some horror stories with like ticks on that
- 10:37trail. Oh gosh, yeah.
- 10:38So, but yeah, so that one's 11 hours, OK.
- 10:41And that's 36 miles and like 8K about and it's definitely more
- 10:47runnable than like all the other ones except like Cranberry.
- 10:51Yeah, but yeah, less popular for sure.
- 10:56Yeah, not as it's a little bit of a sucky trail.
- 10:59Yeah, it's. Not the growing Backcountry feel
- 11:02for sure. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:03And you're not even that Backcountry.
- 11:05I mean, well, it's like, yeah, I mean, it's.
- 11:08Maybe just less maintained? Less maintained the whole trail
- 11:11too. It feels like you're on like a
- 11:12side hill. OK, so you're kind of your
- 11:15ankles are always like rolling to the side.
- 11:17Yeah. I mean, if anyone's done it will
- 11:19know exactly what I'm talking about.
- 11:21It's just, yeah. OK.
- 11:24So, so I'm curious you, you did them all one year, Are you like
- 11:28training for these efforts or you just like doing big miles?
- 11:32Like are you taking when you do 1 like Devil's path, how long
- 11:36until you went after that next one?
- 11:38So after Devil's Path that first year, I was, it was going into
- 11:46the winter. So I actually started trying, I
- 11:49tried to do the great range in the winter that first year and
- 11:52that went pretty bad. So I I'll actually share.
- 11:55That yeah, yeah, yeah. Go for it.
- 11:57But I mean, like after that, I actually ended up getting some
- 12:01mild frostbite that pretty much put me out for most of that next
- 12:05winter season. And then getting back into like
- 12:10running didn't really happen towards the end of the winter
- 12:12spring. And I was doing some Rd. miles
- 12:15and I did like 1/2 marathon because I was like not really
- 12:19getting into the mountains too much with that injury, but.
- 12:23Where did you get the frostbite? It was.
- 12:25So we tried the great range and just ended up having a way, way,
- 12:30way longer day than we should have.
- 12:34Got wet, you know, some water got in the boots and yeah, got
- 12:38on the toes I got. It the toes.
- 12:40Yeah, yeah. Brutal.
- 12:43Yeah, that's tough. We were just talking a couple a
- 12:44couple episodes ago. Connor Brown, I don't know if
- 12:46you know him. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:47He was talking about he had a frostbite incident as well on
- 12:50the. Toes pretty much the same exact
- 12:52thing that he was talking about. Yeah, that like, you know, just
- 12:55getting that, you know, almost purple luck on your toes and you
- 12:59take the boots off and you're like, you know, crap.
- 13:02Yeah, it can't be good. Cooked.
- 13:04Yeah, does this still give you trouble?
- 13:07Like, you know, you notice it gets colder easily, more easily
- 13:11than the rest of you know, your toes for sure.
- 13:15I had like my nail fell out and, and I'm also a climber.
- 13:18So as that nail was growing back in, I was wearing my climbing
- 13:22shoes and they're super tight. Yeah.
- 13:23Like really like was giving me a lot of pain, like coming back in
- 13:28because it was going. It was like getting pushed in.
- 13:30Yeah. By the climbing shoes.
- 13:31Yeah, that's not good. That was kind of annoying to
- 13:34deal with, but it's fine now pretty much.
- 13:37Yeah. But bounce back from it.
- 13:39Bounce back. So how many did you do that that
- 13:42winter then? That that first winter I did
- 13:45none. After the great range.
- 13:47OK, so the fail. So that does 2024.
- 13:50I got you. Yeah, and I'll talk more about
- 13:51that story later when we get to the great range I.
- 13:53Guess yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right.
- 13:56So keep keeping with the summer. What was Next up?
- 13:59So then we did. I think the Prezi was the next
- 14:03one I did in 2024. OK, my watch is better.
- 14:07Pause mid laps. He's a, he's a mid run guys
- 14:11right now. Yeah, so the Prezi was the next
- 14:15one and we did that in May, OK. And Oh yeah, so I I will say
- 14:21Devils and TCTI did solo. Solo, I was just going to ask,
- 14:24you can just do these with with other people.
- 14:26It's just getting the finishing time, yeah.
- 14:28Exactly. Yeah, there's no rule for like,
- 14:29supported, unsupported for the whole street.
- 14:31Yeah, the presidential traverse I did with my buddy Xander and
- 14:37we did it in May and like literally right before like any
- 14:42of the huts or the summit. Oh gosh.
- 14:45So like that was, I think we were, we didn't really do too
- 14:48much research. I mean, like we've done the
- 14:50Prezi before and not for yeah, any like time or anything.
- 14:55We knew what we were getting into a little bit, but it was
- 14:58kind of a a surprise that the. The huts weren't open.
- 15:01Yeah, yeah, I've had similar, I've heard similar stories from
- 15:05people and IIA lot of people will ask me about the Hut
- 15:08sometimes and I actually don't really go into them or use them
- 15:12really much. Like I just fill up at the
- 15:13spigot and go. So I'm not also aware of when
- 15:16they open and stuff. So I'm sure, yeah, other people
- 15:19have ran into that issue. So was there no water up there
- 15:21for you guys? There was, I mean, yeah, there
- 15:26was. There was none, but I think we
- 15:27both got through it on what we were carrying.
- 15:29OK, OK, yeah, nice, nice. So I mean.
- 15:31It's the we're, we're familiar enough with it that we were
- 15:34like, OK, we're, we're good. Yeah.
- 15:36Was there still snow when you did it in May?
- 15:38Only on the Jefferson snowfield, you know, part and that was a
- 15:42little bit of a sketchy traverse because you know, it's like the
- 15:46there's like some some little tracks going across it.
- 15:51Yeah, yeah, it was a little bit a little bit, you know, funs
- 15:55across that in trail run. Yeah, you're slipping a little
- 15:58bit, but. Yeah, a little bit dicey.
- 16:00Whatever. Yeah, well, on my first Prezi
- 16:03traverse in the winter that I did, I did it solo.
- 16:06And I also really didn't know much about this.
- 16:08I think I've told this on the podcast, but I'll just tell you
- 16:10quick. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:10I hadn't even seen Mount Washington before in person,
- 16:15really hadn't seen it. I and I, I swear to God, I don't
- 16:18even think I knew that there were the the towers on there
- 16:21like how it looked. So I was just hiking.
- 16:23I knew the route and was like, Oh, I want to do this winter
- 16:25Prezi. So I get up there with a huge
- 16:27pack that I hadn't really worn before with all the stuff in it
- 16:30so heavy alone in the dark and I get up to Madison Hutt or and I
- 16:35was kind of a so I did Madison got to mad Hutt and I was going
- 16:38up to Adams and I like got a little ways up the trail and you
- 16:42know how there's like a few of the Adams.
- 16:44There's like different piece, not just the one.
- 16:47I thought that that was like. All of the Prezi range.
- 16:50Oh, really? So you couldn't see to
- 16:51Washington. I was like, oh, that's
- 16:52Washington. That's what Jeffrey or whatever,
- 16:55That's hilarious. And dude, I got up into Adams in
- 16:57my entire world, like flipped on its head.
- 17:00I was like, Oh my God, I'm not even close you.
- 17:02Gotta go all that way, yeah? So, but when I did that, I was
- 17:06crossing the Jefferson snowfield and I had an ice axe that I
- 17:10hadn't used before. Like I was just like, I'm going
- 17:12to get this, you know, whatever. Classic, classic, classic.
- 17:15And it's strapped down on my pack and I realized when I'm
- 17:19halfway across the snowfield, like, Oh my God, I'm on it.
- 17:22And. There was one set of tracks and
- 17:24so like, I didn't even have room to take my pack off it was so
- 17:26heavy. So I was just like, just totally
- 17:28blew it. But yeah, fun on the Jefferson
- 17:30Snowfield. Yeah, yeah, that's funny.
- 17:33Yeah, I, you know, we were joking about like, yeah, the ice
- 17:36axe is just for the pictures. Yeah, you don't usually need it,
- 17:38but you do. Like sometimes you do need it.
- 17:42That would be a situation the one time that you actually do
- 17:45need it, right? Yeah.
- 17:46You're not using it. So I think I sold it.
- 17:48Like the next fall I was like, if I actually need this, I'm
- 17:52just not going to go on that route for the, you know, the
- 17:54couple places in the Whites. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:56And I'm not a climber, so I don't know.
- 17:57You probably get in more of those situations but I just
- 17:59stick to the pack down trails usually.
- 18:02Sure. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:03If you want to move fast, like just stay on, you know, do that.
- 18:09So any, any anything else? So you had no HUD access but the
- 18:12Prezi went OK. A little bit of bonking at the
- 18:14end, but nothing crazy. Yeah, the Prezi was fine.
- 18:17I mean, that's just so rude. That's like, I mean, the way I
- 18:20I, I really like it. I don't think it's too difficult
- 18:24in comparison to the other ones. I think a lot of people do think
- 18:27it's difficult because of the rocks.
- 18:29Yeah, but that one is 1 in my opinion.
- 18:32I almost think it's actually like the easiest, OK physically
- 18:35for me. Yeah, Yeah.
- 18:37It's is it the shortest? It's definitely the shortest.
- 18:39It's the shortest, yeah. Yeah.
- 18:40Is that the lowest? What was the time cut off for
- 18:42summer? It's 10 hours, 10.
- 18:44So it's it's generous. But yeah, I mean, if you're not
- 18:49used to those rocks like it's, it's tough to move fast on the
- 18:52northern half. Oh yeah, the northern presents
- 18:54are shocking. Quite shocking, Yeah.
- 18:58All right, so. So Next up, you knocked out the
- 19:00Prezi. Yeah.
- 19:01So the next one was the Saranac, Saranac six.
- 19:04OK. And that's different.
- 19:06Yeah. So that's the Driving 1.
- 19:07Yeah, so I know about this. There's like, what is it some
- 19:10sort of gazebo looking thing? I feel like I've seen pictures
- 19:12that you have to drive to and there's a bell, right?
- 19:14And you use six different things.
- 19:15So. So explain that one.
- 19:17Yeah. So there's the bell down in in
- 19:21like the village of Saranac Lake.
- 19:23So it's it's interesting. You got to start your watch
- 19:25there and, and finish your watch there.
- 19:28Yeah. And you also have to do one of
- 19:30the peaks, Baker. You have to start and end from
- 19:33that bell. So you got to run to it because
- 19:35it's rain in the town. OK, Yeah.
- 19:37So yeah, so like it's, but it's funny, like I always end with
- 19:42Baker when I do the Saranac 6. And I mean, I've only done it a
- 19:45couple times, so. But so, yeah, like I, you drive
- 19:50to the bell, you know, you're like hand on the bell or the
- 19:53gazebo or whatever it is. Yeah.
- 19:55And then you start your watch and then you immediately, like,
- 19:57pause your watch and drive to, to the first one because, like,
- 20:02you still got to get the elapsed time.
- 20:03Yeah, Yeah, yeah. It's bell to bell.
- 20:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:06But yeah, it's just funny. Yeah, that is funny.
- 20:08And then, yeah, the first one that I do that I did in the
- 20:12summer was a haystack. And there's like Haystack
- 20:15McKenzie, kind of like AY split. Yeah.
- 20:17So you do those two and then Scarface was the next one, and
- 20:22then Ampersand, and then Saint Regis and Baker was the last
- 20:28one. OK, so they're all, they all
- 20:30have their own personalities. Yeah.
- 20:32What is the total stats on that when you do all six of them,
- 20:35Like what are the running stats and what are the driving stats?
- 20:38Are you driving significant chunks?
- 20:40Yeah. So it's, I think about two hours
- 20:42of driving, OK, if you're not like breaking any laws or you
- 20:45don't get stuck behind. Yeah.
- 20:47Well, this is something that I I've talked people about, like
- 20:50some of these driving ones. Yeah.
- 20:52Are people flying like there should be like a you just have
- 20:54to go the speed limit because we don't want to make it a driving
- 20:56right thing. Yeah.
- 20:57It's interesting like there because that is part of the FKT.
- 21:01It's like total time, bell to bell.
- 21:03Yeah. And like, I mean in theory, like
- 21:05if you're speeding, you're, you're taking off time, time
- 21:09that you got. To.
- 21:10Run, yeah. But yeah, it's, it's about two
- 21:13hours give or take. OK.
- 21:15And then for the stats on the mountains, I think it's about 30
- 21:21miles with like 9 K vert altogether.
- 21:24Yeah, so. What's the longest?
- 21:26Are there any like long ones, like 10 miles?
- 21:29Are they all kind of Yeah. Would that be 5?
- 21:32The Haystack Haystack and Mackenzie together is about 10
- 21:36miles. OK, so.
- 21:37And the rest of them are shorter.
- 21:38There and then Scarface is 7 I think and then ampersand like 6.
- 21:44Saint Regis I think is like 6. And then, yeah, one of my
- 21:49131929, yeah, Baker's like 2 miles.
- 21:52OK, yeah, it's quick ending. Yeah.
- 21:54Quick end, yeah. So what?
- 21:57So what's the time cut off for that one?
- 21:59That time cut off is 1211 or 12 hours.
- 22:03Is it OK? I think 12 hours.
- 22:04Yeah, was that one hard? It's it's it's hard.
- 22:10Like you sit in the car and start to tighten up a little.
- 22:13Yeah. Like in that sense, it's it's
- 22:15hard. But none of the trails are too
- 22:17bad. Up to Mackenzie is like,
- 22:19definitely get a good taste of the Adirondacks there because
- 22:23that trail's pretty, pretty raw. Yeah.
- 22:25But none of them are too bad in particular.
- 22:28Like, you could in the summer, you could probably go out and
- 22:31with just like a running belt, just go RIP them.
- 22:33Yeah. I wasn't necessarily going to
- 22:36like RIP them or anything. Yeah, you were just trying for
- 22:38to get under that qualifying time exactly.
- 22:41That makes sense. So nice, OK.
- 22:44Yeah. What was next that summer you
- 22:46were just knocking these out? Was this like, did you do any
- 22:48back-to-back weekends or were there?
- 22:50Yeah. I would say yeah, or maybe once
- 22:53every one every two weekends, Yeah, every couple weekends go
- 22:56up every couple weekends. Yeah, and.
- 22:59Where are you driving from? At that point, I was driving
- 23:01from Connecticut. Connecticut.
- 23:03So OK, yeah, like Hartford area. Yeah.
- 23:05So so yeah, it's a similar distance to that or on decks and
- 23:09the whites. So they were, you know, yeah.
- 23:13Long drives, Yeah. Every two weekends it was like
- 23:16worth it for. Me.
- 23:17Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah.
- 23:18We're used to long drives around here.
- 23:20Yeah, yeah. And then so the next, next one I
- 23:25did was the Penny. OK, Nice Penny.
- 23:27Oh yeah. And actually, so the Saranac I
- 23:29did with my buddy Will. Yeah, Will.
- 23:32And then Penny I did with Xander again, same guy as the Prezi.
- 23:36Yeah, that one was the Pemi was like it was hard, but I felt
- 23:41really good on. It yeah, you know, Nice.
- 23:43Was that your first time doing a Pemi?
- 23:45That was my, well, not first time on the Pemi, but my first
- 23:48time running it in a day. Yeah, I backpacked it and yeah,
- 23:54it was, it went surprisingly well.
- 23:56I added on West Bond. There you go.
- 23:58Little bit of a flex, yeah? I was like working on the 48 and
- 24:03not Galehead. Though I was going to say, did
- 24:05you do the Galehead? No.
- 24:06Well, we did Galehead on the backpacking.
- 24:08Trip. Oh, OK, so you already had a
- 24:09bond. Yeah, yeah, I got you.
- 24:11This is peak bagger mentality. Yeah.
- 24:13And I'm like, you know, I got enough time to do it.
- 24:16So yeah, Yeah, that one, Yeah. And we went counterclockwise.
- 24:21OK, started on the Bonds, and that was actually the first time
- 24:26I really used caffeine, like, ever.
- 24:28I'm not like a big caffeine guy, to be honest.
- 24:30Yeah. And yeah, I felt great.
- 24:33Yeah. So Xander is super fit, like
- 24:35he's from Colorado too, and he's always blowing me out of the
- 24:39water. But that was the first time I
- 24:40actually felt fitter than him. Yeah.
- 24:41Yeah. Because I was on caffeine.
- 24:43Yeah. I'm like the caffeine.
- 24:44Amazing. Yeah.
- 24:45Great. Yeah.
- 24:47Oh it it definitely helps. I don't drink caffeine regularly
- 24:50but when I do workouts and efforts now I definitely take
- 24:53it. Yeah, Yeah.
- 24:55It's, it's it's great. Yeah.
- 24:56Yeah, yeah. Do you think you did overboard?
- 24:58Sometimes I I take a little bit too much.
- 25:00I'm like, I took too much caffeine.
- 25:02Yeah, no, I, I don't think so. I think I take a good amount.
- 25:06OK. It was, it's like rocket fuel.
- 25:08I don't think I took that much. I don't remember how much it
- 25:11was. He was like, yeah, you know,
- 25:13take this, Yeah. So you can keep up with me and
- 25:16like, yeah, yeah. That's funny, whatever.
- 25:18But what were the penny times? Penny was like 950 something,
- 25:23955. Yeah.
- 25:25So and that was that was like I was pushing it.
- 25:28Yeah, well, not. Flying, but pushing it.
- 25:31Yeah, definitely. Do you think this is always a
- 25:34question? Are you a counter?
- 25:35I don't know. You've done it at least twice
- 25:37the penny. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:38Would you prefer counterclockwise or clockwise?
- 25:41That's a good question. I I actually really like
- 25:45counter. Clock.
- 25:45You like Counter? I feel like more people like
- 25:48counter Clockwise. Yeah.
- 25:49Though the only thing that I just like a little bit better is
- 25:52if I'm going with my the heaviest pack that I have, like
- 25:55at the beginning, yeah, I would rather just get the climb out of
- 25:58the way. Sure.
- 26:00While my legs are kind of like a little bit fresh and maybe they
- 26:02don't feel it as much. Yeah.
- 26:03And then I'm just lighter the rest of the way.
- 26:05Yeah. Whereas like you just do more
- 26:07climbing later in the counter clockwise.
- 26:10But I, I'm pretty sure that people, and I've, we've talked
- 26:13about this on the podcast before, I think people are in
- 26:15are in agreement that counterclockwise is probably
- 26:18faster. Yeah, I would, I would think so.
- 26:21I, I think I share the same like mentality with you on that heavy
- 26:24pack, because in the winter I did it clockwise.
- 26:26Yeah, with the pack, Yeah. But I think for
- 26:29counterclockwise, like if I was going to go race the Pammy right
- 26:32now, I'd be thinking like, yeah, those first like 5 miles you can
- 26:37go like, you know, sub 7, you know, pretty comfortably on
- 26:41Lincoln Woods. Yeah.
- 26:42And then just up to Bond Cliff is pretty fast and, you know, it
- 26:47just cruise all the way to Garfield Ridge.
- 26:49Yeah. But then it's all about like,
- 26:51can you finish strong? Well, that's the thing, yeah.
- 26:53Everyone who goes counterclockwise, like, has
- 26:54like, either bonking stories, like running out of water
- 26:57because, yeah, you're right. You get up to bond, like, pretty
- 26:59easily. And you're like, oh, man, I'm
- 27:00out here. I'm flying.
- 27:01Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then just everything else
- 27:04hits you. Yeah, definitely.
- 27:07Nice, nice. So so you got the penny done.
- 27:09Is that is that that's four out of eight.
- 27:11That was 55 out of eight. OK, Next up.
- 27:14Next was what was it? Don't freak out, I forget things
- 27:22all the time on this podcast. All the time.
- 27:25So. You can just make one up, just
- 27:27say whatever one that we. Yeah, so, well, I had Mahoussic
- 27:31and Cranberry left. Those are the last two I had.
- 27:34Yeah. So Devil's Saranac.
- 27:36Oh my gosh. Oh, great range, great range.
- 27:39My favorite one. How how did I forget the great
- 27:41range? Great range it was #6.
- 27:45OK, Yeah. So great range.
- 27:49I did with Will, Will Morris, and the same guy did the Saranac
- 27:54with. OK, that was that one I was
- 28:00actually nervous going into. Yeah.
- 28:02Because it is so technical. And I've said it once and I'll
- 28:05like, I'll say it again, the great range, in my opinion, has
- 28:08the potential to be the most dangerous on the list.
- 28:11OK. I think it is the most technical
- 28:14out of all of them. Yeah.
- 28:15And the the most raw, for sure. Yeah.
- 28:18And it'll kick you in the teeth if you're not ready for it.
- 28:20Yeah, you know. I think I've heard it described
- 28:24as like it's like an OCR yeah, course out there, right.
- 28:28Is that does that hold true? That would, I would agree with
- 28:31that, yeah. It is like you're duck diving
- 28:35and, you know, jumping roots, climbing cliffs, you know,
- 28:39repel, like dropping down on like chains.
- 28:42Yeah. And actually, so the first time
- 28:45I tried it, which was in that winter, that winter time, like I
- 28:51didn't know what I was getting into and I, I thought it was
- 28:53going to be like, you know, the stuff here and like the stuff in
- 28:56or like devil's path kind of vibe, you know, like, yeah,
- 29:00manageable. You know, it's not going to be
- 29:02worse than like any of the 4000 footers, any of the other 4000
- 29:05footers. I was so wrong.
- 29:08That trail is so gnarly. So we got like up to like the
- 29:14Saddleback Cliffs and you're like, I mean, Gothics too.
- 29:18Gothics and Saddleback together. There's two areas where you
- 29:22really got to like navigate some really steep slabby, you know,
- 29:26terrain. And like, in the winter, it was
- 29:30like, icy. And actually on Saddleback, on
- 29:35those cliffs, I took a pretty big fall, probably about 50 or
- 29:4060 feet. Wow.
- 29:41Not vertically, but like, tumbling.
- 29:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:44Long. And it's like, you know, like
- 29:46steep ledge drops, you know, pretty gnarly.
- 29:50And luckily I landed in like, some fat powder at the bottom.
- 29:55OK, which is good. Yeah.
- 29:56Yeah, yeah. If I didn't do that, you know, I
- 29:59would have been cooked. Yeah.
- 30:00You know, I would have absolutely gotten seriously
- 30:03injured or maybe even like, worse.
- 30:05Yeah. And also like, it was totally
- 30:10super deep powder that day and unbroken.
- 30:13Like no one was doing it. And it we were already like, I'm
- 30:18going to say like 8 hours in when that happened and it was
- 30:22starting to get dark. Like not dark, but it was
- 30:27getting late. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:28Turning over in the day. Yeah, turning.
- 30:29Over. And we, you know, we were making
- 30:31our way through. We were like, it's fine if we're
- 30:33hiking in the dark and but yeah, after that we're like, all
- 30:38right, we should we should get out of here like this.
- 30:41Yeah. We need to get out of here.
- 30:42Yeah. So was that it?
- 30:43You did not finish that though. We didn't finish it, but, you
- 30:46know, actually when you're in that cold between Saddleback and
- 30:49Basin, there's no, there's no way out except to go back over
- 30:52Saddleback or over Basin. Yeah, so and Basin, too is like
- 30:56gnarly in itself, like those mountains in a row are like
- 30:59pretty, pretty challenging. So we we like trudged over Basin
- 31:04has its own set of like ledges and cliffs and whatever and and
- 31:11we ended up taking this trail called Shory Shortcut.
- 31:13OK, shory shortcut. Shory shortcut.
- 31:16Is that an off the not on maps trail?
- 31:18It sounds like maybe it. Is on maps.
- 31:20OK? OK, it's not a.
- 31:21Shortcut. That's the problem.
- 31:23There you go, that's the. It actually goes up.
- 31:27So you're like, OK, it's a shortcut.
- 31:29It goes back down to the valley. It goes over like a sub peak of
- 31:33basin, Yeah. And then down into the valley,
- 31:35Yeah. So it's like almost not even
- 31:38that much better than just taking the stand, yeah.
- 31:41Oh man. But yeah, so.
- 31:43So what was the what's the the time for the Ultra 8 for that
- 31:47one for? The great range, so in the
- 31:49winter it's 14 hours as well. 14.
- 31:51And then 10 hours in the summer. Okay, yeah.
- 31:54And that's a harder cut off for sure than Devil's Path and
- 31:58Prezi. Gotcha.
- 31:59For sure. Yeah.
- 32:00So, so after that, are you thinking like, man, these winter
- 32:04ones are going to be tough? Were you, did you kind of like
- 32:06maybe give up a little bit or were you you?
- 32:08Did I? Did I didn't want to do them in
- 32:10the winter? OK.
- 32:11Thomas convinced. Me.
- 32:12Yeah. Yeah, he saved.
- 32:13He's very convincing, by the way.
- 32:16But yeah, No, no, I was like, I was scarred from that.
- 32:20Yeah. I didn't press.
- 32:21Plus the frostbite. I mean, we were out there for
- 32:23like 18 hours. That was the longest day by far
- 32:25I'd done at that point. Yeah.
- 32:27And. 18 hours, a long effort. Yeah, yeah, it was freezing cold
- 32:31too. Like all my stuff was frozen.
- 32:33Like that was the first time I really got a taste of like, it
- 32:36was like you're oh, shoot moment.
- 32:38Yeah, yeah. That people, some people don't
- 32:40have. And you know, you, you can tell
- 32:42by their decisions they make. Yeah.
- 32:45You know, have you had like a holy crap moment?
- 32:48Like that was serious? Yeah, yeah, there are some, some
- 32:51winters where I get up wherever and I haven't had any, like I
- 32:54haven't done any of these crazy missions.
- 32:56Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I definitely, I usually go
- 32:58out most weekends, like no matter the weather, just like
- 33:01picking peaks kind of good. But when you get up there and
- 33:03you feel that cold of -20 negative 30 wind chill, you're
- 33:06like, I have no control out here, you know what I mean?
- 33:09You just have to make good decisions.
- 33:11Absolutely Is the biggest thing. Absolutely, yeah.
- 33:13Especially above tree line, like anything above tree line or
- 33:15remote, like where you're not seeing people, it's for real.
- 33:18Yeah, yeah. It's serious.
- 33:19I mean, especially if you're solo, too.
- 33:21Yeah, you lose your finger is, you know, it's super hard to get
- 33:24them back. Yeah, you know, especially like
- 33:26if you don't have someone else to help you take out hand
- 33:29warmers or whatever. Yeah, if you're out there by
- 33:32yourself and your fingers go, it's like, Oh my gosh.
- 33:35And it goes quick. It does if you get anything wet
- 33:38that you were planning on not being wet, like it can be
- 33:40minutes, but you know what I mean, so.
- 33:41Absolutely. Yeah.
- 33:44OK. So how did the convincing or
- 33:45let's finish up the summer ones. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:47So we have what, one more summer one?
- 33:49Yeah, so, well, the Great Range in the summer was fine.
- 33:53I was scared. I was nervous about it because
- 33:55of the cliffs and stuff. Yeah, it went fine and then.
- 33:58Mohusic. Mohusic was next.
- 34:00That one was hard, but it was fine, too.
- 34:02Yeah. I mean, that was, I think the
- 34:04hardest one for me. Mohusic, Mohusic.
- 34:07Yeah, I tried to vlog it. I thought it was going to be
- 34:10easier than it than it was. I mean, I know they say it's the
- 34:12hardest, but none of them up to that point in the summer were
- 34:15too bad. Yeah, for me.
- 34:17So I was like, OK, so I was like taking my time, like vlogging
- 34:21the notch. And before I realized it, I'm
- 34:24like, you know, I'm like running low on time.
- 34:26Yeah. So I had to push it but.
- 34:28Yeah, and I, I've heard that one's pretty gnarly, like in the
- 34:30middle. It's kind of sounds like OCREA,
- 34:33little bit like cliffs and roots and.
- 34:35Yeah, the notch, the music notch.
- 34:37Yeah, yeah. The notch.
- 34:39Yeah. And it just, it's kind of
- 34:41relentless, like it just doesn't stop going up and down.
- 34:44Yeah. But yeah, it's, it's, you know,
- 34:49it's, it's standard I'd say for out here.
- 34:53I actually met Amber on that trail too when I was doing that.
- 34:56OK. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:58Nice. And then?
- 35:00For anyone who's listening, Amber Constance doing laughs
- 35:03Outback right now. Yeah, she's up up there
- 35:06somewhere. Yeah.
- 35:08So, yeah. So then the last one was the
- 35:10cranberry, OK. And that one I've actually was
- 35:12kind of worried about because that's a 50 Miller.
- 35:15It's just a flat 50 Miller, right?
- 35:17It's flat, and I mean, it's a little hilly, but flat relative
- 35:21to the other ones. And.
- 35:23But the big thing about that one is the water, the water, the
- 35:26Beavers, the box, you know, OK. That's like what it's known for.
- 35:30Yeah. And so that one was, yeah, you
- 35:34get wet feet. Yeah.
- 35:35That one took me two tries because I actually took a wrong
- 35:38turn the 1st. Time.
- 35:39Oh, in the summer. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:40It was like, how do you even do that?
- 35:41Like you feel like such a. It happened dude, I will take
- 35:45wrong turns all the times if I'm doing some sort of effort or
- 35:48like route, new route or something.
- 35:49I would just put it on my watch now just to have it.
- 35:52I, I, yeah, after that I started doing that.
- 35:55Yeah. You know what happened was I I
- 35:56followed like a sideshow that looped me back somewhere else on
- 36:00the like I was on the main trail, took a side trail that
- 36:03looped me back to the main trail.
- 36:05Then I started going the wrong way like that.
- 36:07I'd already come. From Oh no, but it didn't.
- 36:09Realize like this, Yeah, you don't realize like there's no,
- 36:12there's no like landmarks. Yeah, and that's it.
- 36:15So when you realize that you just have like stomach, like
- 36:17dropped like what? I did because I was being
- 36:21supported by his two guys on a canoe.
- 36:24They were out there like having a good time on the canoe and
- 36:28they were going to meet me and I was like, I found.
- 36:31Luckily I found a spot with service.
- 36:33I'm like guys, like I messed up bad.
- 36:35Like I am where I met you before.
- 36:38Oh no. Because I'm, I recognize the the
- 36:40spot that I met them. Yeah.
- 36:41And I'm like wait shouldn't I was here like 4 hours ago?
- 36:46They're just paddled miles away. Yeah, and they're like on the
- 36:49other side of the lake, like where I was supposed to meet
- 36:52them next. Did they come out and support
- 36:53you the next go or they were like, I don't know this guy I.
- 36:56Didn't ask him to. I felt bad, felt bad.
- 36:58So I went back a week later, though, because I was really
- 37:00mad, you know? And even once I was in that
- 37:02spot, I still had to walk out, which was like another 15 miles.
- 37:07Yeah. So I ended up doing like almost
- 37:09over 40 miles. That day, same same.
- 37:12You didn't get any short. Then, Oh yeah, I went back a
- 37:15week later and just did it solo and and got it done.
- 37:20And also Jason Pago, I don't know if you know him.
- 37:22He's. I've seen the name.
- 37:23Good. He's a really good at her on
- 37:25deck runner. Really big big runner up there.
- 37:29Yeah, he ran the FKT that same day.
- 37:31Wow, did you see him? I did see him.
- 37:32He ran right by me, like I was standing still.
- 37:36He was flying. Yeah.
- 37:37It took me like 12 hours to do it and I think he took like just
- 37:41under 8 hours. Wow.
- 37:42So yeah, he's super strong. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 37:49When you see those guys on trails like ripping, you're
- 37:51like, yeah, that's crazy. But I mean, I don't know, 4
- 37:55hours. I feel like if you if you were
- 37:56giving it a quick go, yeah, I bet you're not that far off
- 37:59from. Now.
- 37:59Now I feel like I'd be able to do all of them a lot faster.
- 38:02Yeah. Back then I was like, wow, yeah,
- 38:04that's really fast, yeah. OK, So what was the hardest
- 38:09summer one do you think? Great range.
- 38:12I think the Mahusic was harder. Mahusic yeah.
- 38:15Is that one have the longest cut off?
- 38:18That one, yeah. 12 hours, 12. OK, yeah.
- 38:20Or actually cranberry has the longest in the summer 13.
- 38:23Cranberry 13. OK, OK, OK, so we got one of the
- 38:27winter stories, but let's get into some of these.
- 38:29Like winter. Yeah, these war stories.
- 38:32I'm sure. How did you get Cokes back into?
- 38:34No, you're going to do the the winter ones.
- 38:36What was the Yeah. The message.
- 38:39Thomas says you can do it. See, yeah, Thomas was just like
- 38:42really convincing me because he met, well, he was.
- 38:47I met him on the like, Facebook group with Illustrate.
- 38:50I saw he did the winter TCT and I was like, Dang, that's pretty,
- 38:55you know, here's another like, strong guy that's going for like
- 39:00some of these in the winter and like the thought of maybe doing
- 39:03it in the winter, like trying. Yeah, cross my mind.
- 39:06But I I needed something to get me over the edge.
- 39:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so Thomas was that and I
- 39:13never met him in person. And I know that's not like not
- 39:17the best idea necessarily to go out for like one of these winter
- 39:20ultras with someone you don't really know.
- 39:23You got to, you got to know that they're up for it as well,
- 39:26hopefully. And he had good credentials.
- 39:28Yeah. Yeah, and he's pretty
- 39:31experienced with the winter stuff.
- 39:32Like he's been doing it longer than I have even.
- 39:35Yeah. So, you know, and it, it went
- 39:38well. I mean, we were going slow and
- 39:40steady. Yeah.
- 39:41And yeah, like I said before, like I did Bonk because I didn't
- 39:45eat nearly enough. Yeah.
- 39:47Yeah. But it was fine.
- 39:48Like we finished it and with like 5 minutes to spare.
- 39:52Wow. And that is so.
- 39:54Thomas loves to do that. He's very big on the planning.
- 39:57Yeah. And he so he planned the whole
- 39:58thing out, right. He's got all these Excel sheets,
- 40:01everything down. Loving it.
- 40:03Yeah Yeah. And.
- 40:05So he like, is like, I'm going to do this and make it as easy
- 40:08as I can for myself. Yeah, OK.
- 40:11I just go smooth and like, everything's going to be timed
- 40:13out and we're going to roll in just in time.
- 40:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:16So that was like. Nice.
- 40:18So it worked. We it works, yeah.
- 40:20And I was just going along with whatever he was going to do so.
- 40:23No, that's awesome. When I do race efforts, I have a
- 40:26big detailed excel, yeah, and I've had a pretty good track
- 40:29record like give it, handing it off to crew so.
- 40:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would love to compare excel
- 40:33sheets. Oh, yeah, Yeah, you guys can and
- 40:35could, could check, could like do that, Yeah.
- 40:40So do you think that so you guys coming in 5 minutes?
- 40:43I mean, I, you know, this was the plan to do it easier.
- 40:46Do you think the winter cut off times are harder?
- 40:49Like they're longer, but are they still harder because it's
- 40:52winter? Yeah.
- 40:53Or do you just need good conditions?
- 40:55Like it's a very condition dependent obviously.
- 40:57Definitely completely dependent on how stiff the ground is,
- 41:03Yeah. But I'm going to say they're
- 41:04either way way easier or way, way harder.
- 41:07OK, OK. So like it's like completely
- 41:10dependent on are you breaking trail or like are you on like a
- 41:15highway, you know, and if if you're on a highway like the
- 41:18winter cut off times are like no problem.
- 41:20Like you hike it, you know, be fine.
- 41:23So. You don't have to worry about
- 41:24rocks or anything. You just fly over it.
- 41:25Yeah. Is there, I'm trying to think,
- 41:29is there like a strategy, like are some of some of the ones
- 41:32earlier in the season? I guess what is winter, you
- 41:36know, is, is there a definition for winter?
- 41:38Because like there could be obviously a little bit of snow
- 41:40versus like, you know, yeah, if you don't have snow in the
- 41:44Prezis up high or you have it up high, but you don't for like
- 41:4790%, like what, what? How does that look?
- 41:49Right. Yeah, that's, I mean, that's a
- 41:51big thing. So for this the rules are the
- 41:54official winter season, so December 21st to March 21st or.
- 41:59Whatever. And yeah, like exactly, like you
- 42:03could have a, you could go in like theoretically like early
- 42:06season, yeah, on a low snow year.
- 42:09Yeah. And do it while it's clear,
- 42:10Yeah. Or like on some of the lower
- 42:12elevations at the very end of the season.
- 42:15And, and like if it hasn't been super snowy that year, you might
- 42:19be doing it while it's clear in March.
- 42:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. So but yeah, it's, it's
- 42:25definitely, definitely interesting to look at that.
- 42:29And like I think even like on the Prezi FKT, like it's like
- 42:33winter conditions, like they call it that.
- 42:35Well, there was a big back in the day when Ben Thompson ran
- 42:38that, there was a big kind of like thing about him running it
- 42:42on like easier conditions because like he must have got a
- 42:45perfect day and just flew, right.
- 42:46So I think they flagged it and moved it to winter conditions.
- 42:49Yeah. And that's how they call it now.
- 42:51Yeah, exactly. So it's yeah, like, yeah, you're
- 42:56right. I mean, you could be doing it
- 42:57like one year on like December 21st and there's no snow, and
- 43:02then the next year it's like, you know, 3 feet of powder.
- 43:05What do you think is the spirit for this?
- 43:07Do you think it's in spirit to wait for snow for these roads
- 43:10or, you know, have you had any conversations with people doing
- 43:13it? What does Thomas think to like
- 43:14It seems like he. He I, I don't think he, for him,
- 43:19I think it's all about like the conditions, especially like
- 43:22he's, he doesn't mind like if it's going out, if it's low
- 43:25snow, Yeah. And getting it like, and for me
- 43:28too, I think that's part of the game, you know, you got to watch
- 43:31it. Yeah, I do.
- 43:34I in on one hand, like, yeah, like it.
- 43:37It doesn't truly feel like a winter effort if there's no
- 43:40snow. Yeah, but don't hate the player
- 43:42hate. Hate the game the.
- 43:43Player hate the game. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:45If the rules are very specific. Exactly.
- 43:47Yeah, yeah. So, OK, yeah.
- 43:50And I mean for this in particular where you're going
- 43:53for the time, like, you know, it makes sense to to, you know,
- 44:00wait out for good conditions, you know, and in some sense,
- 44:05like a highway is even easier than no snow.
- 44:07Yeah. So here's my watch going again.
- 44:09Yeah, yeah. So yeah, like, it's, I don't
- 44:13know, I I do appreciate there being snow.
- 44:16It feels like more of a winter effort.
- 44:18Yeah, you'll take good conditions.
- 44:20My TCT was the only one that wasn't like completely, you
- 44:25know, true winner. I would say like, yeah, TCTI did
- 44:28late season and it was almost snow free.
- 44:32Not like completely, but pretty, pretty close.
- 44:35Standing there close, there was some snow on the ground, but
- 44:38yeah. Yeah.
- 44:39OK. So, so when you when you finish
- 44:44the great range traverse, Yeah. What was the next like?
- 44:48What was the plan? Did you have to get coaxed into
- 44:51like, we got to do another one and we're like, all right, I'm
- 44:53going to try to get these eights and what was that next one?
- 44:56How many did you do that winter? So I did five, the first one,
- 44:59OK. Five.
- 44:59The first one so. Devil's Path was first, and then
- 45:02the second one was the Saranac Six.
- 45:04Yeah. And that one was another good,
- 45:09good one to start with for the winter.
- 45:11Because it's easy to bail. Yeah.
- 45:12I was just. Yeah.
- 45:13You know, 5 shorter hikes. Yeah.
- 45:16If you need to bail, you have the car there.
- 45:17Yeah, but that's always broken out, too, it seems like.
- 45:20OK, nice. Those mountains get.
- 45:21Really. They're really popular.
- 45:23Yeah. And so that one actually wasn't
- 45:25too bad. We kind of kind of crushed that.
- 45:29It was me and my buddy Solo. His name is Solo.
- 45:31Oh, nothing, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:33And then Jason actually joined us for the end of it, too.
- 45:36So it's kind of a party. Nice, that's fun.
- 45:39Yeah. So it was a good time, yeah.
- 45:41So now you're like, all right, maybe I can do all these.
- 45:43Yeah. So I'm starting to think like,
- 45:44yeah, maybe maybe like I should start focusing on this.
- 45:49But I had a couple fail, failed attempts.
- 45:52Yeah. That winter, like the TCT, no
- 45:55one's going out there, you know, So I tried to to do that one
- 46:00and, you know, just going so slow, like, just deep powder.
- 46:05Yeah. And like, there is no way I was
- 46:07going to get the time. Like, just trudging through that
- 46:09powder is so brutal. Yeah.
- 46:12Were you on in snowshoes? Or not.
- 46:13Oh yeah, yeah. You got to wear them.
- 46:14Snowshoes. I we didn't do snowshoes for
- 46:16devils. We were in snowshoes for
- 46:18Saranac. Yeah, and a bat or on decks.
- 46:21They're very strict on the snowshoes there.
- 46:22Gotcha. So, oh, are they?
- 46:24Yeah, I think I, I think I maybe heard that a little bit.
- 46:26Yeah, yeah. And I'm, I do more stuff in the
- 46:28decks, honestly, yeah than the whites.
- 46:31So I'm, I'm used to it. But yeah, like, you know, a lot
- 46:36of people, they don't like the snowshoes, the snowshoe rules
- 46:39because they want to RIP. Yeah.
- 46:40Yeah. Like if you want to RIP, it's
- 46:41hard to do so in snowshoes. Yeah, you can.
- 46:44Get the running snowshoes, but it's just not, you know, yeah,
- 46:46it's kind of it can be fun a couple times, but I I if I go no
- 46:49snowshoes. I feel like people up around
- 46:51here, yeah, they try to not bring snowshoes if you can, and
- 46:54obviously not like if you're posting on a trail, it's just
- 46:57way harder for. You right, right.
- 46:59But yeah, if it's if it's like firm.
- 47:02Yeah, yeah. If it's, if it's like ice, it's
- 47:04like, all right, why don't I wear spikes, you know?
- 47:06Yeah, Yeah. But they still want you to wear
- 47:07snowshoes as long as there's 8 inches, you know, And it's, it's
- 47:11serious. Like you'll get, you'll get
- 47:12yelled at. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:13Is it, is it people in, is it hikers enforcing it or is it
- 47:16like patrol? Both.
- 47:18Yeah, yeah. Fine, actually a lot of money.
- 47:20I know, I heard. Like it's, yeah, it's, I mean,
- 47:23I, I don't have a problem with it.
- 47:25I like snowshoes. Yeah.
- 47:26Snowshoe enjoyer. Yeah, don't.
- 47:28Don't. Yeah, don't.
- 47:30What is that? What is that?
- 47:31That word? Don't admit to a crime right
- 47:35now. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:36Anyway, whatever. Right, right.
- 47:38Yeah. OK, So what were the what were
- 47:42the other ones that that winter? So and then, yeah, so I didn't
- 47:46do anything for a while. Like midwinter.
- 47:48Midwinter is not good. Not good.
- 47:50We've determined that midwinter, none of them go.
- 47:52Too much snow. Really.
- 47:54But the last like week or two weeks of winter, I went out and
- 47:59did 3. So I did the TCT or No, no, the
- 48:05first one was the the great range.
- 48:07OK, Range. So at that point I'd done some
- 48:11more Recon in the in the Dax and I actually called up Amber.
- 48:17Yeah. And I was like, hey, like you
- 48:20want to go do the great range? She was just coming off a Prezi.
- 48:22Yeah. And she was like, well, I'm
- 48:26coming off a Prezi right now, but I'm not doing anything
- 48:29tomorrow. So.
- 48:31Like maybe. And I'm like, well, I mean, I'm
- 48:36going to go do it. So you want to join like.
- 48:38Yeah, yeah, she's like, all right, sounds good.
- 48:40That's not convincing. There you go.
- 48:41So she came and did the great range and yeah, that was
- 48:47technical, yeah, but it was a lot better than the first winter
- 48:51try. Nice, so you got the finish?
- 48:53Got the finish. Were you under?
- 48:54What was the winter time for that 14?
- 48:5614 Yep. So would you do you remember
- 48:58what you finished in? For that we were.
- 48:59Like 13, I think. Nice.
- 49:01And that was, yeah, it was. There's a lot of snow still.
- 49:04Yeah. And it was like, March, late
- 49:06March. But, you know, a lot of the
- 49:08trail was like, all the trees, Like, the snow is above the
- 49:11trees. Yeah.
- 49:12So it turns into, like, pure, like, almost snow fields.
- 49:16Yeah. And like, there is some steep
- 49:20spots on there. We were actually, like, joking
- 49:23about it. Like, you know, Amber, like,
- 49:26kicked my ass at the end because, like, she has
- 49:29definitely more endurance than me.
- 49:31But then she's like, you know, she's doesn't do great with like
- 49:35the exposure. And she was like freaking out a
- 49:38couple times, like on the ledges and like, yeah.
- 49:42So like, yeah, definitely got each other through that one,
- 49:46yeah. Seems like your powers came
- 49:48together, yeah. Good team effort, yeah.
- 49:51And then the next one was the Prezi.
- 49:54Prezi, Yeah. And that one was super easy.
- 49:56Yeah, it was a good day. And yeah, went out.
- 49:59Prezi gets stomped out too. Forget.
- 50:00Stomped. Yeah.
- 50:01Like, we were like, you know, that was 14 hour cut off.
- 50:04Yeah. And we just had a good day.
- 50:07And there was tons of people. Yeah.
- 50:09And literally just, like, walked it, you know, talked to
- 50:12everyone. And we still were like 12 hours.
- 50:15Yeah. It was like.
- 50:16Yeah, yeah. You know, super chill.
- 50:19Yeah, that's cool. And.
- 50:21TCT was the last one. TCT and you said that one was
- 50:23like low snow. That was low snow, Yeah.
- 50:25There was some snow in the, like the northern side.
- 50:29So like, you know, it's lower elevation, so it melts out.
- 50:34And so like the South side was all like dry pretty much.
- 50:39But then the northern side would still have like a little bit of
- 50:41rotten snow that that I was running through.
- 50:45And I did that one, actually the first bit I did with Doug
- 50:48Duncan, who who's the creator of the old tree, OK.
- 50:51So that's cool, yeah. How did you meet him?
- 50:53Did you just from some or whatever getting?
- 50:56Yeah, he reached out to me OK when he saw it, when I did the
- 50:59first, the normal Sky runner. Yeah, nice.
- 51:02And yeah, he was super stoked that I was, I was going to try
- 51:04and go for winter. Yeah.
- 51:07So, yeah. So that was it.
- 51:09And like TCT was with Doug the Prezi, I did with another
- 51:14friend, Iris. Yeah.
- 51:15So yeah, we it was like a lot of fun that last those last two
- 51:19weeks. Nice.
- 51:20Had some good fun. And then you were like, all
- 51:22right, next winter I'm I'm going to, I'm going to finish it.
- 51:24Out next winter, I'm like, yeah, the first week I'm going to go
- 51:26out and do everything. OK, was and this was this
- 51:29winter. The yes this this.
- 51:31Winter. So tell us about this winter,
- 51:34because when did you actually finish?
- 51:36I literally finished like a couple weeks.
- 51:39In March, Yeah. In March?
- 51:40In March, yeah. OK.
- 51:41So it didn't go the first couple of weeks.
- 51:44Yeah. So the first day of winter, we
- 51:48were going to do the music. Yeah.
- 51:50Because that's the one that everyone was like, warning me
- 51:53about. Yeah.
- 51:54And so Thomas and I, we like, kind of join forces.
- 51:58We went out on a scoping mission the day before we went through
- 52:01the notch on like the like Success Pond Rd. and we went up
- 52:06to old spec and then down to just scope it out, see what it
- 52:10was like. And to be honest, like it was it
- 52:13was pretty OK. Like, gosh, is definitely like,
- 52:17you know, you could in theory fall into a crevasse and get
- 52:20stuck. Yeah, but you have to be like
- 52:23pretty not careful. Yeah, pretty reckless.
- 52:25Yeah, pretty reckless, yeah. And you've been there before
- 52:28now. Yeah, I've been there a couple
- 52:29Times Now, and, you know, so the only thing about it was that it
- 52:33was super icy. There wasn't too much snow,
- 52:37actually. We were breaking a bit, but it
- 52:40was all right. Yeah.
- 52:43And the so the next day we're we're going to do it right.
- 52:48We're actually that night we were sitting in the hot tub at
- 52:50the motel, you know, discussing and scheming.
- 52:56And we're just looking at the mountain forecast.
- 52:59Also, we had Chris Packet. So Chris Walken, he went out and
- 53:02he went like South on it. Yeah.
- 53:04He was like scoping it out for us too.
- 53:06And he said like, yeah, it's good.
- 53:08Like, I see. But it's doable.
- 53:10Yeah. So but this whole day, the temps
- 53:13are just dropping down. Like at first it was like -10
- 53:17wind chill -20 wind chill -30 wind chill -40 wind chill.
- 53:22And we're like, maybe we, like, shouldn't do this.
- 53:25Yeah, you know, because it's like a 20 hour day.
- 53:27Yeah. Like that's significant, you
- 53:30know? Yeah, when you see that dark red
- 53:32on mountain forecast, I, I, yeah, you start getting scared.
- 53:36Definitely start getting scared. So, you know, it was a hot tub
- 53:40decision, that man, to not do that.
- 53:43Yeah. Smart.
- 53:44Probably smart. Probably smart.
- 53:46But were you thinking like, if it's good now?
- 53:47Like we just need good weather and we still got to go RIP.
- 53:50Yeah, I was like, do you maybe we could come back and do it.
- 53:54But like our schedules were in aligning.
- 53:55Like I was going down to New York City to see my mom for like
- 53:59the New Year's and or for like Christmas and like he was going
- 54:04to see his family and bought her in like New York, I think.
- 54:08And there was some beautiful looking days, but of course they
- 54:10were the days we were. Gone.
- 54:12We're gone, Yeah. Yeah, so, but no.
- 54:15So I came up the next week and was going to and was going to do
- 54:21the Pammy instead. Yeah, so we went or I went and
- 54:26did the Pammy that next week and that was with Chris, Chris
- 54:33packet walking. He did the first half with me.
- 54:35Yeah. And then Thomas did like most of
- 54:38the second-half with me. Like he met up.
- 54:40We met up at like Garfield nice. Chris went, Chris left because
- 54:44he had to be somewhere and Thomas joins.
- 54:47Thomas also helped to break out part of it nice, which was
- 54:50amazing. Yeah, that was we were breaking
- 54:53trail on the family. Yeah, when are winter penmies
- 54:56don't happen too much? Yeah, No, it was.
- 54:58It was pretty serious. Like it was, it was tough.
- 55:01Yeah. Chris was flying too, Like I
- 55:03was. I just got some new boots.
- 55:06Yeah. And they're stiff, like heavy,
- 55:08like Oboe's bridges, super warm. And like I was carrying this
- 55:12heavy pack, like huge pack. I'm trying to follow Chris and
- 55:15he's like jogging up the Osseo. I'm like, Oh my gosh, jogging
- 55:19across the Ridge. He was moving quick.
- 55:22Yeah. And like, I was, I was like,
- 55:25Dang. But he put.
- 55:26Caffeine gave me some caffeine. Yeah, I need some caffeine.
- 55:29But he did put me in a good spot to finish it on time.
- 55:32And then, you know, with Thomas, Thomas and I were like breaking
- 55:35out the rest of the trail. So like, it was a bit slower.
- 55:39And and then actually Thomas, I left Thomas on bonds around the
- 55:44bond on Bond Cliff and went in like jogged out because that was
- 55:48broken. Yeah.
- 55:50And then I met Amber like 54 miles in or so nice and we like
- 55:55ran out. Finished it up.
- 55:57And then Thomas came out. Yeah, nice to get waited for
- 55:59him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, good friend.
- 56:01Yeah, yeah. Well, we we had to make sure he
- 56:03got. It.
- 56:03Yeah, yeah. And he was, he'd done the winner
- 56:07Penny before, so he wasn't like trying to deal with me that.
- 56:10Day. Yeah, yeah, he.
- 56:10Was helping out, yeah, which was greatly appreciated.
- 56:13Yeah. So what were the, what were the
- 56:14winner? Penny time?
- 56:16Was it 14? It's 15. 15 and.
- 56:19That was 1445. Wow, that.
- 56:22Day OK, so cut it a little close, yeah, but it wasn't like
- 56:25great. It was like definitely not super
- 56:28fast. Yeah, like it gets.
- 56:29Yeah, it gets fast. Like it's similar to the Prezi,
- 56:32like there are a lot of people that get out there, but it's
- 56:34just a couple sections. Yeah.
- 56:35Garfield Ridge and, you know, has anyone been there?
- 56:38What or what not? Sure.
- 56:40Yeah. So, I mean, thankfully, you
- 56:43know, with Chris and Thomas together, it was, it was fine.
- 56:47Yeah, so then you got one left. So 2 left, two left and.
- 56:52Cranberry Mahoussic. Oh yeah, you didn't go to the
- 56:54Mahoussic. Yes, yes, yeah, yeah.
- 56:56So we kept saying, like every weekend we were going to try and
- 57:00do like the Mahoussic or the Cranberry, like Thomas and I, we
- 57:03were talking about it, but every weekend was just bad.
- 57:06Yeah. And we went out.
- 57:07It was like just so much snow and so cold.
- 57:10Yeah. And also I was like helping out
- 57:13a lot with like Amber's project. So I was up here a lot And and
- 57:18like, I would say we went out, we tried to do the, we tried to
- 57:24do the cranberry once in like mid January.
- 57:28Yeah. And it was so bad.
- 57:30Like there's so much powder. We made it like 10 miles before
- 57:34we turned around. Yeah, like it was.
- 57:35It was like this is not going to.
- 57:37Happen. No way.
- 57:39And yeah, so that was kind of a shame, but it kind of like got
- 57:43me out of the mindset of doing these, you know?
- 57:45Yeah, because this winter was tough.
- 57:47It was tough. There was not a lot of good
- 57:49weekends to RIP like up in the waist, at least for me.
- 57:51Like it was kind of disappointing.
- 57:52I don't know it it was. It was hard, yeah.
- 57:56So yeah. So the so you're kind of like, I
- 57:59don't know, but then. I kind of given up on it.
- 58:01And also I was like skiing, you know, the skier, too.
- 58:04Yeah, yeah. And I was kind of like, yeah,
- 58:07maybe I'll just ski the rest of the year.
- 58:11And Thomas convinced me to come back.
- 58:14This guy, alligator blood dude, he loves it.
- 58:17Dude, you got to come do the Mahoussa, you know, like it was
- 58:20like the last week or last two weeks.
- 58:22Yeah. And I'm like, Oh my gosh, dude,
- 58:25like I really don't want to. I really don't want to like it.
- 58:29It was like the last thing I wanted to do.
- 58:31It's like the Mahoussa Traverse. And so he did convince me.
- 58:40And what really convinced me, too, is like he reached out to
- 58:43Chris Packet again. Yeah.
- 58:45And Chris went out like the day before and took a video of the
- 58:48ground, and it was solid. OK.
- 58:50Like he was walking on it with spikes.
- 58:52Yeah. And I was like, wait, I need to,
- 58:56like, take advantage of that. Yeah.
- 58:59Because that doesn't happen that often.
- 59:01That's like maybe a once a season that.
- 59:03Yeah. So yeah, we went out and the
- 59:07three of us, we did the the Mahousk.
- 59:10Nice. Great ground conditions.
- 59:12Yeah, solid. But it was like wet snowing all
- 59:16day. No views.
- 59:18Yeah. Soaking wet, not too cold, like
- 59:20maybe mid 20s. Yeah, but definitely wet.
- 59:24But the ground for me, like all that matters is the ground
- 59:27conditions moving fast. Like if I can move fast.
- 59:30We were in snowshoes all day, too, but like, not, not post
- 59:34holding. Yeah.
- 59:34Like, and if you can do that, you'll fly through it.
- 59:38Yeah. So like, Chris and I finish it
- 59:39in like, 1640. And Thomas was like just me and,
- 59:43you know, he likes to come in. Last night we were getting cold.
- 59:46We're like, yeah, we want to move a little.
- 59:48We want to like, you know, just finish.
- 59:50And Thomas was like, yeah, like I got everything planned out.
- 59:53I'm just, you know, having a good time.
- 59:56So Chris and I went ahead and we did in like 16 hours, which was.
- 1:00:01Really. I think that's probably the
- 1:00:03fastest winter time. Yeah.
- 1:00:06And Thomas, you know, came cruising in 19 or so.
- 1:00:10Happy as a clam, Yeah. What is the cut off for that in
- 1:00:13the winter? 20 hours, 20, so that's the
- 1:00:15longest 20 hours. 20 hours that'd.
- 1:00:17Be that'd be interesting. Is there a Is there a Moustic
- 1:00:20Winter FKT submitted? There is not.
- 1:00:22Look, I don't know if there is or not.
- 1:00:25We did look. I don't think there is one.
- 1:00:27And we were going to put it. We were going to go put put for
- 1:00:31the the FKT, but we just didn't, yeah.
- 1:00:37Yeah, I don't know. I'm not a big fan of winter FKTS
- 1:00:39to be honest. Yeah, it's so variable.
- 1:00:41I've talked about the Winter FKTS before and it definitely
- 1:00:44is, yeah. It's just, it's just if there's
- 1:00:47like a, if someone's done it in the winter, it's a winter route.
- 1:00:50I think it's cool. But like, I don't know.
- 1:00:53And the same thing with kind of like Strava crowns.
- 1:00:55If, if there's a, if there's a dry rock time, like let's
- 1:00:58preserve that. Sure.
- 1:00:59Let's not blow it out of the water because we can also let
- 1:01:01down, you know what I mean? Right.
- 1:01:03Yeah, exactly. It's just winter is just so like
- 1:01:06variable. It could either be amazing or
- 1:01:09yeah. OK, so you you battled, you
- 1:01:13battled the demons, got the Mahoussic and now you got one
- 1:01:15more and you're like, this is I think I saw on your Instagram
- 1:01:18maybe that just I mean, you're swimming with the Beavers.
- 1:01:21This is the worst. One this is the worst one this.
- 1:01:23Is the worst one by far. I thought the cranberry I
- 1:01:26thought Mahoussic was going to be the worst one.
- 1:01:27The Mahoussic was like easy in comparison to this.
- 1:01:32Like it was just so I went out and like, I'm like, you know
- 1:01:37what, 7 out of eight, one week left to winter, yeah, I'm going
- 1:01:40to go out and do it. And like, everyone's like
- 1:01:42telling me go out and do it, Thomas telling me go out and do
- 1:01:45it, you know, Thomas was like, yeah, go do it.
- 1:01:47I'm going to do it, you know? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:48Thomas has got me on the track every time.
- 1:01:50I know. Yeah.
- 1:01:51The ultimate hype man. The ultimate hype man.
- 1:01:54So yes, I drive up and I'm like, I slept in my car that night.
- 1:02:01Get out at like 3 AM 1.5 miles in I go through some ice down to
- 1:02:09like my like. Oh God.
- 1:02:11Mid stomach, yeah. So completely soaked.
- 1:02:15Even my shirt, you know, my jacket that I was wearing Yeah.
- 1:02:18And the bottom of my pack, like everything was soaked and in
- 1:02:22like cold water, you know, And my like I wanted to turn around
- 1:02:27you. Didn't.
- 1:02:28Turn around. I was so mad, but I I was ready,
- 1:02:31you know? I had like a full set of
- 1:02:33clothes. Yeah.
- 1:02:34And so it's like 4:00 AM. This is nightmare fuel.
- 1:02:39It's black in the middle of nowhere.
- 1:02:42Like Cranberry 50 is like the middle of nowhere.
- 1:02:45Like there's nothing up there, especially in the winter.
- 1:02:49And like, yeah. And I'm like halfway into a
- 1:02:53Beaver bog. And so as far as I can see, like
- 1:02:56the trail cross is like this, this like bog and like there, I
- 1:03:00can't see any good way around it.
- 1:03:03So I'm like, you know what, I'm going to just walk through it.
- 1:03:05I'm already in it. So I just walked through it.
- 1:03:07Oh my God. I'm like breaking ice to walk
- 1:03:10through it. Like I'm like smacking the ice.
- 1:03:12My gloves are soaked, everything's soaked and I'm just
- 1:03:15walking through. It what is going through your
- 1:03:17brain, you can't be moving fast. No, no, I was not moving fast at
- 1:03:21all. I was like wading through water.
- 1:03:24Oh my gosh. And I get to the other side
- 1:03:26finally, and it's like my, you know, like my, the pants that I
- 1:03:31was wearing were like stuck to my leg.
- 1:03:33Yeah, just. Yeah, it was.
- 1:03:37Well, the one thing too that I've learned, if I like get wet
- 1:03:41in a race or something, or like you're going through a wet
- 1:03:43section, you're just like, I'm wet, I'll just be wet and you
- 1:03:47just go. But in the winter, the water is
- 1:03:49cold. It's cold.
- 1:03:50So you get cold so fast. Like it's not just being wet,
- 1:03:54you probably just freezing. Yeah.
- 1:03:56No, it's definitely, it was definitely, definitely cold and
- 1:04:01like everything was like icing out, like balling up.
- 1:04:04Yeah. So I had like these big ice
- 1:04:06cubes on my Gators and my boots and like I like got to the other
- 1:04:11side and but I was I was a little bit cold.
- 1:04:14I knew I had a change of clothes.
- 1:04:16So I actually instead of changing right there, I decided
- 1:04:19to keep walking and try and warm up a little.
- 1:04:21Bit that's smart, yeah. So I walked another like 2 miles
- 1:04:26or so until I was like warm and then I stopped and I like did a
- 1:04:30full change. But it was hard to get like to
- 1:04:33open my Gators because they were frozen shut.
- 1:04:36My pants, they were frozen to my pants.
- 1:04:38I had like my multi tool. I was like chipping away at the
- 1:04:40ice, like chipping away the ice on my boots.
- 1:04:44There was like a puddle in my boots, but I was able to stay
- 1:04:49warm enough. I had like plastic bags on my
- 1:04:51feet and just employing some like strategies that I've
- 1:04:55figured. Learned over the Yeah, this is
- 1:04:57just. Everything.
- 1:04:58Yeah. And then once the sun came up,
- 1:05:00it was like the best sunrise. I've yeah.
- 1:05:03I was like, so happy. I almost started crying.
- 1:05:05Yeah, because I was like, it was so cold that night and just wet.
- 1:05:10And once the sun came up, I just felt so much better at.
- 1:05:13I was wearing snowshoes like all day.
- 1:05:15Yeah. Breaking.
- 1:05:16No one was out there. The trail was like untouched.
- 1:05:19I was breaking trail, but it wasn't heartbreaking.
- 1:05:21Yeah. Like, you know, I wasn't sinking
- 1:05:24a ton or anything. Definitely navigating a lot of
- 1:05:27water. Yeah, but very carefully.
- 1:05:30Yeah. After that first one, Yeah.
- 1:05:33And, you know, it just kind of went by.
- 1:05:35So it's 40 miles from the northern trailhead to the first,
- 1:05:38like Rd. Yeah, 40 miles.
- 1:05:41So Wanakina. And then.
- 1:05:43Yeah. So like 14 hours later, I popped
- 1:05:45out of Wanakina. Dang, once I'm there, I know I'm
- 1:05:47good, you know? And that last section was just
- 1:05:51once it got dark again. It was bad.
- 1:05:53Yeah. Mentally.
- 1:05:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you're so close.
- 1:05:56I was close, everything was hurting.
- 1:05:58Like my feet really hurt. I had like 30 LB pack on.
- 1:06:02Oh gosh, and this is this is the longest.
- 1:06:04Is this longest cut off? What was the winner on this 20
- 1:06:07hours 20 as well. Same as the Mahuza, Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:10And so, yeah, I got out to the road, which would like 2 Mile
- 1:06:14Rd. walk left and finished in like 18 hours, 42 minutes.
- 1:06:19And I was just like, so happy to be done with that.
- 1:06:22Yeah. Was there anyone there you just
- 1:06:24like? Nope, just you completely alone.
- 1:06:26You're like, I'm done. Didn't see a single person the
- 1:06:29entire day. Yeah, even in Juana Keene, I
- 1:06:32didn't see a single person. Yeah.
- 1:06:35So yeah. And then I drove home.
- 1:06:38Well you had to be feeling good. You're like I dude I did this
- 1:06:41and monkey off the back. Yeah, off the adrenaline I saw.
- 1:06:44I took a little nap, but yeah, yeah, yeah, that is crazy.
- 1:06:48Got home. Right.
- 1:06:49Well, it seems fitting that you kind of ended with that insane,
- 1:06:52like the the hardest, most insane adventure at the end.
- 1:06:55Yeah. And then you sweep it behind
- 1:06:57you. I to be honest with you, I don't
- 1:06:59think I would have finished it if it wasn't my last one.
- 1:07:01Yeah. I think if it if it was like my
- 1:07:037th or I, I would have just turned around.
- 1:07:06Yeah, just. Like no.
- 1:07:07Way. But I was like, this is my last
- 1:07:09chance to to do it, and you're the first person to do it this
- 1:07:13year. Yeah.
- 1:07:13What was the date? So because you only have like a
- 1:07:17week or whatever left of winter. Right.
- 1:07:18Yeah, Yeah, I think it was the 18th.
- 1:07:22OK. No, only a few days, 18th.
- 1:07:26The 14th, 15th, 16th. Oh yeah, it wasn't.
- 1:07:29The 18th, Yeah. Nice.
- 1:07:31So. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:07:33So first person to finish this, are there other people like
- 1:07:37going for? I'm sure you've like inspired
- 1:07:38people. I'm sure Thomas is like, you
- 1:07:40know. Thomas is going for it.
- 1:07:42Yeah, he's almost done. He's going to finish up super,
- 1:07:45super soon. I think he just has Cranberry
- 1:07:47left too. Nice for this upcoming winter.
- 1:07:49For this upcoming winter, yeah. So he's been working through
- 1:07:52them for a while. And yeah, and so I, I don't know
- 1:07:57if other people are really going for it, I'm sure.
- 1:08:00Yeah, well I was looking at the IT looks like that, you know, I
- 1:08:03know people submit for the patches.
- 1:08:05Do you know like how many people have just done the the 24 hour
- 1:08:09standard for the 8 routes? Like is there a list?
- 1:08:11Because I know on the grid website you can see when people
- 1:08:14finish the grid. Yeah.
- 1:08:15Is it the same thing or no? There is a list, I think it's
- 1:08:17like 100 something for like this sub 24 yeah.
- 1:08:22And then the Skyrunner is like, there's maybe like 8 or nine
- 1:08:25people at this. Point.
- 1:08:26Yeah, yeah. And then in the winter, so for
- 1:08:30the gold normal, which is sub 24 hours, there's like 5 people
- 1:08:34that have done it, yeah. And then for the Skyrunner Gold,
- 1:08:37there's only one so. The loan, the loan for and
- 1:08:41you're on that. How quickly were you on the
- 1:08:42website after you finished if you were texting that guy?
- 1:08:45Yeah, I don't think I'm. I don't know if I'm on there
- 1:08:47yet. I haven't.
- 1:08:47Checked or not? Yeah, they update it like once a
- 1:08:49year. I I don't really mind.
- 1:08:51That, Yeah. It's like the people know.
- 1:08:53I know, I know. So yeah, yeah, no, that's cool.
- 1:08:57Well, that's definitely, that is an epic project that is.
- 1:09:01It's so crazy. Yeah.
- 1:09:02The winner, the winner stuff. I mean, just next level
- 1:09:05toughness. What do you, what do you like
- 1:09:08cooking up next? I mean, you got a free plate
- 1:09:10now, right? You don't have this big thing
- 1:09:12hanging over you like you're cooking anything up.
- 1:09:14I yeah, I mean, like I've been looking at a couple things.
- 1:09:19I like the I kind of like the yo-yo idea of like maybe yo
- 1:09:22yoing some of. Them OK.
- 1:09:24Like the Mahusik yo-yo maybe? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:27I like. That, but I don't know I'm, I'm
- 1:09:31not like I don't have anything planned long term.
- 1:09:34I kind of just show off the vibes, yeah, of what I feel like
- 1:09:38doing so. Well, it seems like you do
- 1:09:39multiple sports. You said you're a climber, you
- 1:09:42ski, you can't. You came from a football
- 1:09:45background. So are you like, do you go
- 1:09:47through phases of like, you know, running is my thing right
- 1:09:49now, big hiking, you know? Absolutely, yeah.
- 1:09:52Do you have any other summer sports you do or pretty much
- 1:09:54just? Well, climbing, climbing,
- 1:09:56climbing and running, yeah. And probably it's going to be
- 1:09:59mostly running this year, yeah. And yeah, I mean, I'm like up
- 1:10:07here, like there's Romney. I've never been to Romney.
- 1:10:10That's climbing spot that I, I really want to go to.
- 1:10:13It's super famous and iconic, you know?
- 1:10:16But yeah, for running, it's like right now I'm just kind of
- 1:10:20focusing, I think on, on getting my speed up a little bit.
- 1:10:24Yeah. Not a super big racer to be
- 1:10:27honest. Yeah, I was going to ask.
- 1:10:29But I mean, I do I do enjoy like dabbling in like some races for
- 1:10:35a. Little bit of competition.
- 1:10:36Yeah, a little bit. You know, I think I'll get into
- 1:10:40it more. Yeah.
- 1:10:41Do you have? Yeah.
- 1:10:42So it's, I mean, this is more of like, I feel like people do,
- 1:10:45some people are like hiking projects.
- 1:10:47Yeah, some people are speed projects races, So it sounds
- 1:10:51like you may do a little bit of everything.
- 1:10:53Yeah, I'd say a little bit of everything, Like I'm not like,
- 1:10:57you know, I don't think I'm going to podium at like one of
- 1:11:00these crazy races, but not yet. Never know.
- 1:11:04Never. Working towards getting a little
- 1:11:06faster every day. Nice, nice, but.
- 1:11:09Yeah, right now I just I kind of like to throw just throw
- 1:11:13together some cool roots, some cool custom roots yeah and I
- 1:11:17spend a lot of time in the Adirondacks, especially like
- 1:11:19last year I was I was doing a lot of that stuff that the
- 1:11:23slides there, the off trail, yeah, just so good, you know
- 1:11:27yeah. So I like to to scramble around
- 1:11:30out there, but. Yeah.
- 1:11:31Well, I think this have you been on a lot of the 4000 footers
- 1:11:34outside of the roads or no, I mean there's that's a lot of
- 1:11:37them. Yeah, like well outside, like
- 1:11:41the main trails. Outside of the Pemi, the the.
- 1:11:43Prezi yes, yeah, yeah. I've done the 4000 footers in
- 1:11:46the. I've done the whites.
- 1:11:47OK, you've done all the. I've done the, you know, Vermont
- 1:11:50five. I've done the Adirondack 46.
- 1:11:52Yeah, nothing in Maine except old spec for the Mehuzzi.
- 1:11:56OK, nice. Just having gotten out to Maine.
- 1:11:58Yeah, so far. Hard drive, some of that stuff
- 1:12:01is hard to coordinate. So, yeah, I mean, I think a big
- 1:12:04question, what it sounds like, I don't know if I know the answer
- 1:12:08already from you, but the White Mountains versus the
- 1:12:10Adirondacks, that's always like which are tougher.
- 1:12:14What do you think? What do you think?
- 1:12:16It seems like you're a pretty good person for this.
- 1:12:18So I started off in the Whites, but I'm going to say that the
- 1:12:25Adirondacks are definitely more difficult.
- 1:12:27There you hear it. Definitely more difficult.
- 1:12:29That seems a little bit of the sentiment.
- 1:12:32Yeah, do. You think?
- 1:12:33That the trails are, is it more technical, is it more, is it
- 1:12:38less maintained and more OCR? Yes.
- 1:12:41Or is it? Yeah, OK.
- 1:12:42There's a combination of that. There is just the the trails are
- 1:12:48things are further away. They're longer.
- 1:12:50You know, AL's head in the lights is like the big like far
- 1:12:53one, but in the Adirondacks that wouldn't even you wouldn't wink
- 1:12:55an eye at something like. That well, that's right here.
- 1:12:58You have to walk in for a lot of them, right?
- 1:13:00Yeah, A. Lot of them, I mean you have
- 1:13:01like Cascade, Porter, Giant, RPR which are right on the right on
- 1:13:04the road, but a lot of them are far in also like you know,
- 1:13:09herdpaths. There's not like maintained
- 1:13:12trails up to everyone. They're they're pretty
- 1:13:15substantial now. I mean, so many people have done
- 1:13:17them. But yeah, I mean, sometimes it's
- 1:13:20confusing. You know, you're out there.
- 1:13:22It's kind of like a maze. Yeah.
- 1:13:24So it's just, I think it just requires a little bit more, you
- 1:13:28know, it's a little bit more difficult to do that around deck
- 1:13:3346 than the white nines. Yeah.
- 1:13:37The other thing is I just, I just feel like it's not as easy
- 1:13:43to move fast in that or on decks, yeah, like the Whites,
- 1:13:46you can definitely run even like some of the mountain trails, you
- 1:13:50can run them at a good clip. Yeah.
- 1:13:51Whereas that or on decks, like I'm happy getting a sub 20
- 1:13:55minute mile. Yeah, you know, yeah, on a lot
- 1:13:58of the stuff, yeah. And that I'm not saying that the
- 1:14:00Whites aren't super rugged because they are.
- 1:14:02Yeah, they're absolutely super rugged, but it's just a
- 1:14:06different vibe. Yeah.
- 1:14:07You know, I think a lot of people who spend a lot of time
- 1:14:09in the mountains know what you're saying, too.
- 1:14:11Yeah. When it's just, I don't know,
- 1:14:14you're on a trail and you're like, I just can't move fast
- 1:14:17right now. It's just everything there's,
- 1:14:19you know, stuff hitting me. Yeah.
- 1:14:21A little bit of, you know, technicality, you know, all that
- 1:14:25stuff can add into just going slower on trails, right?
- 1:14:28Yeah. So it sounds like more of that.
- 1:14:30Yeah, I I would say so. Yeah, I mean, the trails here
- 1:14:33are so popular too. They're they are, yeah.
- 1:14:36Like the ones that get hit a lot get hit a lot.
- 1:14:38I don't know. Do you think it's more congested
- 1:14:42in the whites? Definitely because the Adirotic
- 1:14:45you have to walk in further. Like I've heard the parking
- 1:14:48isn't as good. Yeah, there's less people,
- 1:14:49right? Well, I mean, like if you go to
- 1:14:51a popular trail in the Adirondacks, it's like the
- 1:14:54density, I think here it's more overall, like there's more
- 1:14:57people everywhere. Yeah, because there's like the
- 1:14:59trails here are nicer, you know, just in general.
- 1:15:02And in the Adirondacks, like if you go like Marcy, like the Van
- 1:15:06Ho trail, oh, you're going to see a ton of people on the next
- 1:15:08day, like super congested Cascade Porter, tons of people,
- 1:15:12you know, giant RPR, tons of people.
- 1:15:15But then like, on some of the more nasty ones, you know,
- 1:15:18you're just not really going to see that many people.
- 1:15:20So just quiet. Just quiet.
- 1:15:23Super Backcountry. Like, yeah.
- 1:15:25There's a few place in the whites I feel like they can get
- 1:15:27like that, but. Yeah, definitely Cabot.
- 1:15:30Yeah, up there. Between cabin and weeks, have
- 1:15:33you done the Kilkenny Ridge? I haven't.
- 1:15:34Yeah, that's a good. That's one that overgrown ferny.
- 1:15:38Yeah, you can't see your feet back country.
- 1:15:41Yeah, I heard it's pretty gnarly, yeah.
- 1:15:43Yeah, yeah, there last year there were a ton of blow downs.
- 1:15:46Yeah, I don't know as much like last winter, we just got a ton
- 1:15:51of wind I guess or whatever. Some storms like they all trails
- 1:15:55had a ton of blow downs which really can slow trails up huge.
- 1:15:59Oh, absolutely, yeah. And like some of the ones that
- 1:16:02don't get maintained as much, that definitely plays into it.
- 1:16:05But yeah. Well, well, sweet man, this was
- 1:16:09that was an epic story. I mean, congratulations on
- 1:16:12finishing that. Thank you.
- 1:16:13Is there anything else like big that you've done in the hiking
- 1:16:18trail running or outside of that that you think it's just
- 1:16:21interesting? We could we could hear some more
- 1:16:22stories. You got good stories.
- 1:16:24I mean, I, I wouldn't say I really like have tried to push
- 1:16:29anything super hard. I did try and go for the Bob
- 1:16:32Marshall FKT last year. OK, which is what is that?
- 1:16:35It's an extension of the great range.
- 1:16:37Yeah, I didn't get it. I I belled probably like 3/4 of
- 1:16:43the way through because I was just falling a little bit behind
- 1:16:46like every minute. But yeah, so that's a that's a
- 1:16:49great range plus like a couple other things like big slide and
- 1:16:53you know, Algonquin, right, Iroquois, that's a tough route.
- 1:16:56It's like 30 miles with 14 or 15 K yeah and yeah it's really
- 1:17:03stout time on that. I really, I really just think
- 1:17:08like I love putting together like big gnarly things that, you
- 1:17:13know, like kind of make my own route.
- 1:17:15Yeah. So like maybe like, you know,
- 1:17:21I'm I'll come up with some some nasty, nasty thing that could
- 1:17:26could be the next big running thing in that or on decks.
- 1:17:29Yeah. The scene there is different
- 1:17:30from here. Yeah, How would you, I, I don't
- 1:17:32know too much about the scene over there.
- 1:17:34Yeah. How would you kind of like
- 1:17:36describe it as their. I'm sure there's a a hardcore
- 1:17:40group of runners like they're in here and hikers, right?
- 1:17:43But is it is it less races? Are there less people like
- 1:17:46pushing different projects? Yeah, definitely.
- 1:17:49I think it's more low key for sure yeah everyone's super cool.
- 1:17:52You know I I mean people there are super cool too.
- 1:17:55I haven't, but you don't see them as much.
- 1:17:58I feel like yeah, as you do here and definitely like there's not
- 1:18:02races like all throughout the mountains there like they are
- 1:18:05here. Yeah, I mean white face has it's
- 1:18:08yeah, you. Know.
- 1:18:08That's a big. One is, but yeah, yeah, I feel
- 1:18:11like the racing here, like White Mountain endurance races came in
- 1:18:14a few years ago and really like have blown up the races, which
- 1:18:16is awesome. Like, permitted races in the
- 1:18:19White Mountains. I think the FKT scene here is
- 1:18:22pretty strong. Like, right.
- 1:18:23You know, Jack Kenzel. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:18:25He came through and, you know, gave these all, like, super
- 1:18:28stout times. Some other people have been
- 1:18:30chasing it. Sure.
- 1:18:31I mean, people like Amber doing crazy projects.
- 1:18:35Absolutely. yo-yo. And Oh my gosh, did you pace her
- 1:18:37on any? Of you, I did, you did
- 1:18:39supporting a little bit for that, yeah, the.
- 1:18:42Well, she did the New Hampshire AT and then the yo-yo of the
- 1:18:44Whites 100 which is. Ridiculous, that's.
- 1:18:46Bonkers ridiculous whites 100 Can I have another?
- 1:18:50Yeah. It's not enough to just go once,
- 1:18:52yeah. Yeah.
- 1:18:54So there's definitely a lot of that here, yeah, which is cool.
- 1:18:56The community here is amazing. I mean, everyone's super cool,
- 1:18:59Yeah. And you know, everyone you talk
- 1:19:01to, Yeah. So.
- 1:19:03There's a lot of resources too. Like I know you said the you had
- 1:19:05met Thomas in that Facebook group, but there's lots of
- 1:19:07groups that if you have questions about the whites or
- 1:19:10like the 48, the grid people are just they, they know.
- 1:19:13They're happy to answer. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:15And the Dax, it's like, yeah, if you don't know your stuff, get
- 1:19:18out, you know, years. People are happy to help.
- 1:19:21Yeah. I think it's cool too.
- 1:19:23There's obviously straw was pretty popular.
- 1:19:26I'm I'm back on the socials, which is cool.
- 1:19:28That is how I kind of heard about you.
- 1:19:29Sure, Yeah. And like even if you haven't met
- 1:19:32somebody, like you'll show up and like see somebody like, oh,
- 1:19:34I saw you do whatever and then, you know, like chat about
- 1:19:37whatever. Lots of mountain runners.
- 1:19:39Yeah, they got the Whites White Mountain throw down.
- 1:19:43Oh yeah, which has been a huge success.
- 1:19:44You should come out and RIP one of those this year.
- 1:19:46I was thinking about giving it a shot, you know, trying a couple
- 1:19:50of the segments. Yeah, because I do, I'm getting,
- 1:19:52I feel like I'm, I'm getting into more of like that kind of
- 1:19:56VK yeah almost thing. So yeah, you know, maybe I'll
- 1:20:00give it a shot and see what happens.
- 1:20:02Yeah, I think it's cool like that.
- 1:20:05The last I mean last year definitely.
- 1:20:07I mean, you just drumming in those, those efforts brought out
- 1:20:10big names. Oh yeah.
- 1:20:12Anybody can come and do them within a month for free, right.
- 1:20:16So it's not like a race entry. You can pick a good day and then
- 1:20:20you can go race against other super fast people.
- 1:20:22Yeah, yeah. It's really, it's really cool.
- 1:20:25I feel like the trail running right now in in New England is
- 1:20:27getting in the whites getting really good.
- 1:20:29Absolutely. So it's an awesome, awesome
- 1:20:31thing. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:20:32Yeah. Well, cool man.
- 1:20:34I appreciate you coming on like awesome story.
- 1:20:36Absolutely. Congrats again.
- 1:20:37We're going to go grab at least a couple miles right now.
- 1:20:40For sure, yeah. Black Mountain, But yeah, thanks
- 1:20:43for coming on. Is there?
- 1:20:44Where can people find you? I'm on Instagram Joe dot palisi
- 1:20:49PALISI and then Strava also Joe palisi so.
- 1:20:54Perfect. Yeah, easy enough.
- 1:20:56All right. Yeah.
- 1:20:57Cool, thanks for having me. Yep, see you guys.
- 1:21:00See you. All right, I mentioned a dream
- 1:21:04talk. So we're we're just going to get
- 1:21:05into the dream talk. I had a.
- 1:21:08Dream last night, it kind of shook me a little bit and I'm
- 1:21:12going to explain the dream. And you know how you have a
- 1:21:15dream and you can't when it happens, you can't really
- 1:21:18explain, explain it to other people in the magnitude of, you
- 1:21:23know, what it felt like to you in the dream.
- 1:21:26So I don't know how this is going to come across.
- 1:21:27I don't even remember it that good.
- 1:21:29This is a problem. I don't remember it.
- 1:21:31Great. So it's like, how can I convey
- 1:21:33to you how shocking it was? But I'm going to give it a go.
- 1:21:36In this dream, it felt like we were in a school project or a
- 1:21:42classroom, right? Or like some sort of school
- 1:21:44setting where people had different groups that they were
- 1:21:46working in and the, the project was to come up with some sort
- 1:21:52of, I don't know if it was a video or a song, I don't know
- 1:21:55what it was, but it was one of those two, you know, genre
- 1:21:58ballpark things. And my group, you know, I
- 1:22:03remember, I don't even remember what it was.
- 1:22:04I wish I had an idea of what my my group's project was, but we
- 1:22:09presented something fair, you know?
- 1:22:12High school or whatever level this is a decent little like
- 1:22:15that was kind of nice, whatever thing.
- 1:22:18Like the level, Andrew, come on, you have to give us some
- 1:22:20details. If I was doing a mountains, you
- 1:22:24know, a scene or whatever, it would just be a couple, like
- 1:22:27maybe clips from a top of a mountain.
- 1:22:29That's it. Very basic.
- 1:22:30No editing, anything like that. OK.
- 1:22:33And that's what the vibe of everyone was.
- 1:22:36And then somebody, some group came up and they showed their
- 1:22:40project. Oh, I forgot the song.
- 1:22:41I don't know. All right.
- 1:22:42Scenic mountain with a song in the background.
- 1:22:45These guys came up and it wasn't even, this wasn't my group
- 1:22:48project. This was somebody else's group
- 1:22:49project. They they put on this thing and
- 1:22:54it was, it was almost like a like a Weird Al parody.
- 1:22:59You're a Weird Al stuck in the drive through back in like it
- 1:23:02was a parody song about my life. OK, and the the you know,
- 1:23:09obviously I'm on the YouTube post in the YouTube now.
- 1:23:12So when I see like someone who does good edits or good video or
- 1:23:15has good punch or whatever, you know, I'm like, oh, that, that's
- 1:23:18nice now. So I don't know if I'm noticing
- 1:23:19this stuff more, but in the dream they had this awesome like
- 1:23:25music video. It was like the edits were
- 1:23:28amazing, right? It was super funny.
- 1:23:30It was a parody song. It was so punchy and it was so
- 1:23:34clever. You know, sometimes in my, you
- 1:23:36know, in the shower, in a car drive, you know, by myself, I'll
- 1:23:40do a little bit of singing, a little bit of a, you know, a
- 1:23:42little bit of AI just have a lot of energy sometimes and I know
- 1:23:49so so, you know, maybe this is something that I'm kind of like
- 1:23:52more is in my brain. But you know, and sometimes I'll
- 1:23:56freestyle right, like if Joss, I'll just say a couple little
- 1:23:59little funny lines, but you know, and nothing crazy.
- 1:24:03So I kind of know where my skill set is there.
- 1:24:06The video was so clever and so funny and it had the perfect
- 1:24:12images to match like what the song was right.
- 1:24:16It was like Eminem, you know, play on words and it had stuff
- 1:24:21for my life. The one I do remember we've been
- 1:24:23playing this game called Dutch Blitz.
- 1:24:26It's like a card game, kind of like an Uno or I don't know,
- 1:24:28it's got colour cards and it and it had like these puns with
- 1:24:32Dutch Blitz in it and a couple other small like only me and
- 1:24:38Jocelyn really would like know the reference, right?
- 1:24:41So like these really intimate, clever lines that were making me
- 1:24:44laugh, right. And with the edits in the visual
- 1:24:47I'm like Oh my God this is insane.
- 1:24:50So that's what. The dream was, And it's like,
- 1:24:51all right, Andrew, what's so crazy about that?
- 1:24:54I was thinking, I was trying to figure out where did that come
- 1:25:00from? OK, because I know I'm not
- 1:25:04clever enough to or funny enough like this was next level cinema
- 1:25:08guys. I mean, I wish I had it.
- 1:25:10I post it on my YouTube. It's out of my niece.
- 1:25:12Post it on my YouTube. I'm thinking, where did it come
- 1:25:16from? I, I know I couldn't think of
- 1:25:20it. You know, my brain as it is when
- 1:25:22I'm awake is not clever enough or funny enough to put that
- 1:25:25together freestyling, right. So it must have been pre planned
- 1:25:29somewhere pre written, you may say.
- 1:25:33So I'm thinking where was it written?
- 1:25:37And I have a few thoughts. It was either in written in my
- 1:25:41brain, but not in a conscious part of like me thinking about
- 1:25:45it, right? Like there's a dark little cell
- 1:25:47in my brain that's been coming up with this hilarious, funny
- 1:25:50music video about my life. Came up with the perfect script,
- 1:25:55put, you know, faces to the OR whatever to the, to the words.
- 1:26:00And then it just portrayed it in my dream.
- 1:26:02OK, that is that could happen. I don't know much about the
- 1:26:05brain, but we don't know what we don't know what dreaming is,
- 1:26:08right? This is what got me thinking.
- 1:26:10So that's one thing which is a little bit weird.
- 1:26:12It's kind of like I think about me like editing some of these
- 1:26:15videos and doing some of the stuff and there's A Little Dream
- 1:26:20man who doesn't come who I have no access to that is just
- 1:26:25working on on cool music videos in my brain.
- 1:26:28So it could be there. It could be that that you dreams
- 1:26:33they say like you dream really slow or I don't know how that
- 1:26:36works. Like a dream feels like an hour,
- 1:26:39but it's only a minute, which I don't even know if that would.
- 1:26:42OK, Yeah, yeah, it feels like an hour, but it's only a minute.
- 1:26:46So let's say the song was 3 minutes.
- 1:26:50OK, hold on. Not 3 minutes in me time, 3
- 1:26:53minutes in the dream time. So an hour and a dream feels
- 1:26:57like one minute in real life. So 3 minutes in a dream feels
- 1:27:03like. Is that even faster?
- 1:27:05It feels like 20 seconds. Am I doing that right?
- 1:27:09Because I'm just thinking, what if the time is going so slow
- 1:27:12enough where it seemed like I was just freestyling like to to
- 1:27:16a beat, to a quick beat, but in reality, in life, it was
- 1:27:19happening like I had five minutes to think of the next
- 1:27:22line. That's why they were so good,
- 1:27:24you know, and that's how my dream brain, that could be it.
- 1:27:26I came up with it with my conscious or my dream brain, but
- 1:27:30it took and I had a 5 minutes. It just the way that I saw it
- 1:27:34was really quick. So I could be a second option.
- 1:27:36And then the third option, the funnest option that I was kind
- 1:27:41of thinking about. And I've kind of gotten, I
- 1:27:43wouldn't say gotten into the meditating thing, but really, I
- 1:27:46do think, you know, mental strength and I don't know,
- 1:27:51spirituality, maybe I don't know really how to describe it, but
- 1:27:54I, I do feel like, you know, I've been doing a little bit of
- 1:27:57mediting, right? And it's like you don't exist.
- 1:27:59The task exists. You know, we're all connected,
- 1:28:03right? Nobody, we're all this, this the
- 1:28:06same in this, the big thing that we don't even know what's going
- 1:28:09on. You know, you don't exist.
- 1:28:11The person actually doesn't exist.
- 1:28:13Everyone is on the singular plane or, or mission, right?
- 1:28:19And we're all connected in this way.
- 1:28:21This is, you know, they say remote viewing where, you know,
- 1:28:25some people, if they really meditate super hard, they can
- 1:28:30see what's going on across the world, right?
- 1:28:33Because they're connected to this other kind of world that
- 1:28:37we're all logged into, but we can't perceive it.
- 1:28:40What if in my dream state, my mega dream meditation state, I
- 1:28:47am plugged into the funniest, most clever version of myself
- 1:28:54and I could just recall from that guy because of my dream, I
- 1:28:58was connected to him, right? That's the third thing and what
- 1:29:02that gets me. I hope this makes sense.
- 1:29:04I hope somebody, I hope somebody is like, I know what he's
- 1:29:09talking about. I, I can feel how kind of weird
- 1:29:13this was like where did this awesome music video script come
- 1:29:16from? How was it generated?
- 1:29:19And I, you know, no one's going to really know how good it was.
- 1:29:22It was epic, guys. It was epic.
- 1:29:24If I posted it, you would be like top of the charts.
- 1:29:28It was so funny to me. So, but that that begs the
- 1:29:32question, are we all connected? Is this, and I'm kind of leaning
- 1:29:36into this maybe a little bit, you know, maybe trying to help
- 1:29:39my running. What if there's a version of me,
- 1:29:44he a genius and Albert Einstein of of Andrew Wojack, a a 4
- 1:29:49minute Miller of Andrew Wojack. Wait, well, Andrew don't get a
- 1:29:53Killian Jornay version of Andrew Woj, right?
- 1:29:56Like what? What am I connected into?
- 1:29:58But I just haven't tapped into it yet, right?
- 1:30:03I don't know and and who knows? I don't know if anyone meditates
- 1:30:07and this has. Worked for you, but.
- 1:30:09You know, sometimes, like if you're in a hard effort, right,
- 1:30:12it's like almost if you can, you know, it hurts so bad.
- 1:30:15You want to it feels like you're just going everything you got.
- 1:30:19But also there's been moments where it, where it, it really
- 1:30:23hurts. It's really hard.
- 1:30:24But also I kind of, if I can get myself to relax, I can move
- 1:30:27faster, right. So what other limitations am I
- 1:30:31putting on myself because I'm not tapping into some sort of
- 1:30:34thing that is available to me, not just in my dreams.
- 1:30:38Maybe I could be a 4 minute miler.
- 1:30:40Well, I, I, who knows, right. So just something to think
- 1:30:45about, something to really try to tap into.
- 1:30:48And oh, man, John Hirsch sent me something good here.
- 1:30:52I don't know if I can really pull it from my brain right now.
- 1:30:54Like if I was able to tap into, you know, everything, I would be
- 1:30:57able to. But he sent me this thing where
- 1:31:00monks, you know, these monks would run a marathon every day
- 1:31:03or some sort of crazy running event.
- 1:31:05And the goal, the goal of the monk, this is how I perceived it
- 1:31:12and remember it. So I could be botching this, the
- 1:31:15goal of the monk. The monk was not chasing
- 1:31:17fitness. The monk was chasing the version
- 1:31:23of himself or the work that it takes to get that, that fitness
- 1:31:28level or whatever your goal is, right.
- 1:31:31And maybe this, maybe this is all part of it.
- 1:31:34May, you know, for, and, and I really, I think about, I, I kind
- 1:31:41of think about like, you know, if I'm on a similar path or, you
- 1:31:44know, I'm, I've dedicated years to, to running and really trying
- 1:31:48to find my potential. If you're really trying to find
- 1:31:51your potential, it's not the destination, it's the journey.
- 1:31:55And I guess that is the, that is the, the metaphor.
- 1:32:00But it's, yeah, the end goal isn't what you're chasing.
- 1:32:03It's what it takes to get to that end goal.
- 1:32:07So like, what are those things? Years of dedication, you know,
- 1:32:11decades of dedication, leaving no stone unturned for decades,
- 1:32:16making mistakes and and fixing them.
- 1:32:19Making mistakes is a huge part of it.
- 1:32:22Failing, right, Failing and coming back better thinking that
- 1:32:26you you have reached where you want to reach to and then, you
- 1:32:29know, getting set back and then and then going up learning more
- 1:32:32things really, you know, going the way of the warrior, giving
- 1:32:36your all to something and and and the people who get to that
- 1:32:41ultimate goal, they know what it takes, right.
- 1:32:43And again, I always like drop names, but like a Tom Brady,
- 1:32:46right, the guy for 20 plus years, just every minute he was
- 1:32:52just trying to be the best football player that he can.
- 1:32:54That's the goal, isn't the fitness.
- 1:32:57The goal is to learn what it takes to be him, right, because
- 1:33:00at the end of his career, Tom goes, I have all the answers.
- 1:33:03He that's like that is what this metaphor is.
- 1:33:06He put in the work. He knew what it take to get to
- 1:33:08the highest level. He had all the answers and he
- 1:33:10went and won a Super Bowl with the bucks at 42 or whatever it
- 1:33:14was. So that was kind of my dream.
- 1:33:18That was kind of my dream spiral talk.
- 1:33:21But I thought it I thought it would might be interested and
- 1:33:23maybe someone would have some takeaways from it.
- 1:33:26But we'll, we'll do the trail conditions before the the race
- 1:33:30preview and race results. So the trail conditions, I went
- 1:33:33up, you know, my spring trail running playbook.
- 1:33:39In my spring trail running playbook, I talked about a lot
- 1:33:43of places to go in the spring outside of the whites when, when
- 1:33:47the conditions aren't great. And I run that playbook, you
- 1:33:51know, running the playbook. But there, you know, when you do
- 1:33:56it, I don't know what it is. There's a certain feeling you
- 1:33:58get when you're either in the 4000 footers.
- 1:34:01I don't know if it's if it's really up north, it's the
- 1:34:04terrain or it's being up high in the air.
- 1:34:07But you guys know there's something about being up there.
- 1:34:10And I've gone a couple weekends where I haven't gone up there
- 1:34:12and I, I was just itching to go and get some of that northern,
- 1:34:17northern air. And I'm going through trail
- 1:34:20condition reports and, and it's just, it's not good in the
- 1:34:25April, even if you have like crappy conditions, it's it's
- 1:34:28muddy, it's icy, it's post holy, all that stuff.
- 1:34:32If you start in the morning, if you go for a couple hours, you
- 1:34:35do something where it's a, it's a popular route.
- 1:34:37Gridders are out there. They're packing it down.
- 1:34:40You can get away with just throwing on spikes like some of
- 1:34:43the reports have said, like, yeah, I just need to throw on
- 1:34:45spikes or whatever. But today it was in the 60s,
- 1:34:51early morning, 70s in the afternoon, which is beautiful.
- 1:34:54I cannot complain about that. But that soft snow, it's just
- 1:34:59going to get torched even even in snowshoes.
- 1:35:01So I couldn't do it. So I'm thinking, all right, what
- 1:35:03are the other peaks? I'm kind of getting ahead of
- 1:35:06that playbook. You know, I've ran a couple of
- 1:35:08the plays now I'm trying to get I'm trying to get to that early
- 1:35:10May, you know, I want to get on the moats, but it's just, you
- 1:35:13know, I think South moats actually probably pretty good
- 1:35:16and I picked one similar to that, but I want to get a little
- 1:35:19bit higher. So today I was like, all right,
- 1:35:21I'm just going to go up north and do something.
- 1:35:22Landed on Welch Dickey. Awesome route.
- 1:35:26I've only done it. I I actually have only been
- 1:35:28there a couple times. I know it's one of the most
- 1:35:30popular routes for, you know, it's it's off exit 28 in
- 1:35:33Thornton. A lot of people it's great
- 1:35:35views, very exposed, so you get a lot of cool mountain views and
- 1:35:39it's a good it's like 1800 feet, 4 miles.
- 1:35:42It's a good hike for, you know, more casual hikers to to Oh, you
- 1:35:48get good views and do it. And I did it as in a big group
- 1:35:50back in the day. So it's cool.
- 1:35:53And then I want, you know, I went, it was today's Friday, so
- 1:35:55I want to go on a weekday, which which helped.
- 1:35:57So it wasn't really, it wasn't really crowded and no snow, no
- 1:36:02ice. And it, I mean, it's pretty
- 1:36:05punchy. It actually is pretty punchy.
- 1:36:07And it, it, it was going to get, you know, not 3000 feet, but
- 1:36:102800 feet. So I landed on it.
- 1:36:13It was awesome. It was awesome.
- 1:36:15It was I, I hadn't, it just feels like I haven't ran on
- 1:36:18White Mountains, rocks and roots in six or whatever months it is.
- 1:36:23And that's because that's true and it felt good to get out
- 1:36:26there. I've I've been to Mananoch, but
- 1:36:27they were still ice when I went to Mananoch.
- 1:36:29So that's like kind of close, but it was kind of so this is my
- 1:36:31first real kind of mountain steep technical run in a while
- 1:36:35and it was awesome. The a lot of the slabs were wet,
- 1:36:38but you know, that's fine. I that was a OK with me.
- 1:36:43A little bit of wetness is not going to not going to frighten
- 1:36:46me. You got to get used to the wet
- 1:36:47and the muddy trails as the as the melt out continues.
- 1:36:51But it was awesome. Ran into Andrew Soras up there.
- 1:36:54So we got some miles in together, which is cool and
- 1:36:59there's turkeys going nuts over here.
- 1:37:01There's no way you guys would hear this on that.
- 1:37:03I wonder if I could edit in background noise.
- 1:37:06Probably not, but just some turkeys gobbling.
- 1:37:12But yeah, it was awesome. I mean, the trail conditions, I
- 1:37:14I have nothing to report. A little bit muddy down down low
- 1:37:17like a little bit nothing crazy, but a little bit muddy.
- 1:37:20Wet slabs, but totally dry or wet slabs, totally dry, No snow
- 1:37:27covered in snow. I don't know.
- 1:37:28I don't know. I don't know what that snow
- 1:37:30reference was, but no snow, no ice.
- 1:37:33I promise that. No snow, no ice.
- 1:37:35I'm watching Dickey. Although Andrew was saying the
- 1:37:37other morning it was really cold and it was it's the slabs are
- 1:37:40all wet. So was icy in the morning.
- 1:37:42So actually if it drops below freezing, which I think it is
- 1:37:45next week, it might be a little bit icy, but no significant snow
- 1:37:49going the afternoon. It's going to be good.
- 1:37:51And I'm what am I thinking about for next weekend?
- 1:37:55What week? I don't even know the date.
- 1:37:57I think next weekend it's definitely.
- 1:37:59I always do the moats on the White Lakes Ultra weekend.
- 1:38:03I'll go to the moats and then I go swing by White Pond or
- 1:38:08whatever. I don't know.
- 1:38:10What's the White Lake? Oh my.
- 1:38:12Oh. My gosh, White Pond, White Lake
- 1:38:17Ultra. I always go to White Lake.
- 1:38:18I used to camp there as a kid. We used to that was like the one
- 1:38:21camping activity we would go like when I was really young a
- 1:38:24couple times a year. Yeah.
- 1:38:28So that so that's the place. So but I might go there a week
- 1:38:30early and just do the most 2 weekends in a row because I
- 1:38:33really just want to get up north.
- 1:38:34But I would, I would think South Mote is out And then I mean May
- 1:38:371st guys, the White Mountains throw down is coming out soon.
- 1:38:40Are you guys going to hear? I don't even know.
- 1:38:42Yeah, I can't do math right now. But anyway, we're getting on Big
- 1:38:46Mountain soon. It felt good today.
- 1:38:48Hopefully you guys enjoyed the podcast and now we're going to
- 1:38:51go and do race results. The race results are going to be
- 1:38:55inside today, guys, I did them. It's actually funny.
- 1:38:58I did the race results inside I think once and I was like, all
- 1:39:02right, I'm just going to start doing these inside because it's,
- 1:39:04it's been a little bit daunting. I, I, I have a better system
- 1:39:07that I'm going to get to so I don't miss any and I'm not super
- 1:39:10stressed about hitting all the races that I'm working on.
- 1:39:15But until today, it's going to be inside.
- 1:39:17But on that video, when I did it inside, like on the YouTube
- 1:39:20analytics, you can see in a video how long people watch or
- 1:39:23like your watch time kind of. And as soon as the race results
- 1:39:27came on, the watch time went from I don't know what percent
- 1:39:30it was to 0. Nobody stayed on to watch it.
- 1:39:34So then then I'm thinking like, Oh my God, I need to be in this
- 1:39:38truck bed for people to watch this podcast on YouTube.
- 1:39:41So but today Turkey's moving, still gobbling, moving downhill.
- 1:39:47I found a better spot today, a little quiet.
- 1:39:49I don't know if this is going to be my final.
- 1:39:50You know, I want to have a few podcasting spots, but hey, this
- 1:39:53good good omens. You got turkeys gobbling around
- 1:39:55you. So I'm going to do the results
- 1:39:58inside. I'm figuring out a better
- 1:40:00process. It's at the end of the episode
- 1:40:02anyway. But here are the race results
- 1:40:05from this upcoming weekend and the past weekend.
- 1:40:07I know I'm going to do a run amok.
- 1:40:10Results do I remember off the top of my head?
- 1:40:13Oh. I'm going to do the Run Amok.
- 1:40:18Off the top of my head, this is, this is.
- 1:40:21This is not recommended. This is dangerous.
- 1:40:24I don't know the 3rd place finishers names.
- 1:40:27Maybe I'll put the top three in, I don't know, but I'll just talk
- 1:40:31about Run Amok before I do the preview.
- 1:40:33Run Amok was stacked. I did the preview for Run Amok,
- 1:40:37and I don't know what list I was looking on.
- 1:40:39I don't know if my head was in the muck.
- 1:40:41I don't know what was going on, but there were some sluggers
- 1:40:43that showed out that weren't even on the entrance list.
- 1:40:47Erik Lipuma. See, This is why I can't do
- 1:40:52this. This is why I can't do this.
- 1:40:54Why am I blanking now? Why am I blanking?
- 1:40:56Don't do this with the girl from Maine that just crushes
- 1:40:591,000,000 miles. Oh my gosh.
- 1:41:01Photo finish. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 1:41:04no, no, no. I don't know if it's going to
- 1:41:06come back to me. God Dang it.
- 1:41:08OK, Anyway, run amok. Erika Lapuma shows up, right?
- 1:41:11He he won by a good amount. I don't know if he set the
- 1:41:15course record. I don't think so, but he is.
- 1:41:17He's on U.S. National championships team.
- 1:41:21World class runner. Runs around the world.
- 1:41:25He comes in first, runs the race, so I didn't know he was in
- 1:41:27it. Boom.
- 1:41:28Eric Lipuma. Did I?
- 1:41:29I don't even know. Maybe I did do a preview.
- 1:41:31No, but he wins it second place. Keith Nadu.
- 1:41:34OK Keith Nadu. Who?
- 1:41:38Keith is such a strong runner. He's somebody.
- 1:41:42He's like a household New England ultra runner name.
- 1:41:45Because Keith. Keith will do.
- 1:41:48He will do. Hamster Wheel 100 Miller.
- 1:41:51He'll do White Lakes Ultra, he'll do something fast, he'll
- 1:41:54do something short, he'll do Infinitis.
- 1:41:57He does. His range is so good.
- 1:41:59I think he has a Hut, Traverse Picnic.
- 1:42:02He has such good range. And to show up, I don't know
- 1:42:05what he's been up to, but to show up at a 50K, to show up,
- 1:42:10you know, Jigger Johnson, 100 mile first place finisher, he
- 1:42:16just goes to so many ultra marathons and his range is
- 1:42:19crazy. But to show up to a fast 50K
- 1:42:21come in second in a stacked field.
- 1:42:23Oh my gosh. Fast 3rd place was the guy from
- 1:42:26Canada who had the Mananoch Manchester to Mananoch course
- 1:42:31record. We knew he was fast 'cause he
- 1:42:33had that course record by a good bit. 7 something knew he was
- 1:42:37fast. He came in 3rd.
- 1:42:38And then Andy Mcgibbon comes in fourth, who's a household goth
- 1:42:42sound name, Vermont name. Just a stacked one through 4.
- 1:42:47I'm forgetting 5, you know, I forget five.
- 1:42:49I didn't know Thursday name, but at least give him the credit.
- 1:42:51And then the women's race, maybe even more exciting, Lindsay
- 1:42:56Webster and that girl from Maine.
- 1:42:59Why Lela Gadrell? Lela Gadrell and and Lindsay
- 1:43:03Webster, a six second photo finish.
- 1:43:07Lindsay etches out, she wins it. I don't know.
- 1:43:12I feel like I don't know. I've said a couple times in the
- 1:43:14podcast talking about age. I don't want to like age.
- 1:43:18I don't know. But Lindsay Webster is older,
- 1:43:20like a later 30. So she actually probably is in
- 1:43:23her prime. But she's somebody that's been
- 1:43:26on the scene for so long, just like a veteran.
- 1:43:29Maybe that's what I'm trying to say.
- 1:43:30She's a veteran in the sport. Professional runner so fast.
- 1:43:34Prezi FKT and then Lela Gaudreau, a young girl from
- 1:43:40Maine who just throws down 1,000,000 miles.
- 1:43:42It's kind of like a vet in a, in a new newcomer.
- 1:43:46Although Lisa Gaudrell is probably more, I don't know,
- 1:43:50she's probably more experienced than most of the people you know
- 1:43:53in New England running ultras. But that was cool to see.
- 1:43:57And then third place was another super fast.
- 1:44:00Oh. Joanna Frontier, I don't know if
- 1:44:04we're pronouncing her last name correctly.
- 1:44:08She came in third. Okay, another pro sponsored,
- 1:44:11whatever you want to call runner super fast.
- 1:44:13I don't what you do if Vermont 100K last year or something won,
- 1:44:16won it real good time. And then Lexie Jackson comes in
- 1:44:20fourth for the women. So a stacked event lived up to
- 1:44:24the hype. Everybody went so fast.
- 1:44:28I did say like, I wish I did that I did that race, but
- 1:44:31honestly, I looked into it and I was like, no, OK, just Rd.
- 1:44:34straight, Rd. dirt. I know there's some dirt roads
- 1:44:37and there was some fert, but that is not, you know, I I want
- 1:44:42to be racing up and down, but that was a cool race.
- 1:44:43Maybe one day I'll throw myself in that mix.
- 1:44:46That was cool to see. So all right, we did one of the
- 1:44:48race results. That was the big one that I kind
- 1:44:50of stuck to. And then we'll go through
- 1:44:52through a couple other race results and then we'll preview
- 1:44:55next weekend some upcoming stuff tomorrow.
- 1:44:59This is dropping on Sunday. Tomorrow's the Boston Marathon,
- 1:45:03which is epic. I didn't realize how big of a
- 1:45:08not a deal. I don't want to say deal because
- 1:45:09I know, you know, the city shuts down.
- 1:45:11The Boston Marathon is huge. Boston Marathon is the one of
- 1:45:16the most sought after marathons in the world.
- 1:45:18The way that all these pros talk about Boston, It's it's, it
- 1:45:22gives me like Western states UTMB vibes.
- 1:45:26Some people don't like Western States vibes.
- 1:45:29So massive. And I really that I watched the
- 1:45:32Connor Man's documentary. So, you know, I've been looking
- 1:45:35at more the marathon stuff. So it's been cool to fall.
- 1:45:38I know a couple of the names. Those fast guys are just there.
- 1:45:42It's fun. Everything's getting really
- 1:45:43fast. It's cool to see those people
- 1:45:45RIP. And also going back a little
- 1:45:49bit, No, I don't even know why I'm throwing this in.
- 1:45:52That's at the end of the episode if you're listening right now.
- 1:45:55I mean just tried and true. You're a warrior.
- 1:45:57Appreciate you. What?
- 1:46:01What did I want to say? Oh, oh Oh yes, watching like a
- 1:46:04Connor man's documentary and seeing these these pro runners
- 1:46:07do like a, you know a 20 mile run finishing at like a 430 or
- 1:46:12434 average pays 450-4448. All these, you know, just making
- 1:46:18it look easy like they go really hard.
- 1:46:20That's the one thing that is, you know, obviously the heart
- 1:46:23rate data, it is crazy that that they're you know these guys are
- 1:46:26running 4 somethings and the heart rate is like 167168 or
- 1:46:30whatever. That's that is kind of crazy
- 1:46:34going sub 5 minute miles, but you know, you see these guys are
- 1:46:38like, oh man, that's fast. And then yeah, I said this last
- 1:46:41week, I don't know if the gap is awesome off on my watch, but
- 1:46:43when I ran the South Hunkanunic Rd. climb, I clocked the 450 gap
- 1:46:48and I was like, oh, that is pretty fast.
- 1:46:50And I am I am on that climb and the climbs, you know, when I do
- 1:46:54stuff on the flat, I just have a hard time turning over.
- 1:46:58It's because I don't run over Rd. run that much.
- 1:47:00I'm much more competitive and and stronger on the UPS, so it
- 1:47:06kind of makes sense. But the week or whatever, I
- 1:47:08recently went down to the track before I before I rolled the
- 1:47:11ankle and I was like, Oh, I ran a 450 gap up, you know, for 8
- 1:47:15minute, whatever. Like I may come in here and I
- 1:47:17may, you know, I was doing 3 by 1 mile, which is kind of like a
- 1:47:21good, like my first workout back of the track.
- 1:47:23I that's what I like to do. So I'm thinking like, oh man, I
- 1:47:26may run 5 flat for these like reps like 4, you know, 4
- 1:47:31whatever minute miles. No, no business.
- 1:47:35I did not run 5 flat for three miles.
- 1:47:39I think it was five. I was in the five teens for all
- 1:47:41of them, which it wasn't like all out, but it was I was it was
- 1:47:46a good workout for sure. I was happy with those times,
- 1:47:49but I was like, I'm going to be so fat.
- 1:47:51I'm going to, you know, 440 because you do see some of these
- 1:47:54people. Do you know old runners or pro
- 1:47:56runners will do workouts and they they, they can consistently
- 1:48:01hit like for miles, like 4 even, you know, the top Connor Manse
- 1:48:05people are, are outliers. But even the the other kind of
- 1:48:09pros that you can see, you know, they'll do a lot of workouts
- 1:48:12where they're running 4:50 to 5:00 O pace for mile reps like a
- 1:48:15David Roche, not that he isn't like top of the world, but you
- 1:48:19know, some of those fast, fast people like a Ollie Ostrander.
- 1:48:22She's got a big YouTube, she's crushing on YouTube.
- 1:48:24That's kind of I do like watching her videos.
- 1:48:26I think she's funny, good at editing.
- 1:48:28I appreciate a good YouTube video.
- 1:48:30Those kind of people like a Lauren Gregory, maybe she
- 1:48:33they're just in the videos a lot.
- 1:48:34So I saw the workouts but. They'll they'll do.
- 1:48:37Workouts where they run like 4 or something, mile reps and and
- 1:48:40a lot of the working time for longer intervals will be 5
- 1:48:43something. So I don't know.
- 1:48:46I got to get faster. I got to get faster for sure.
- 1:48:48I got to work on turnover. But the goal's five years from
- 1:48:52now. That's like one of the things
- 1:48:54that I'm going to try to take pressure off myself this year.
- 1:48:57Everything I'm going to do this year, even though I have big
- 1:48:59goals, it's really just to help me in five years.
- 1:49:02The way the monk, the way the warrior, I'm tapping into where
- 1:49:05that script came from. That's a call back here.
- 1:49:08The rest of the results, Peace, peace for outdoor Andrew.
- 1:49:15OK, we're going to wrap this up with a couple race results,
- 1:49:18couple race previews. So race results from 2 weekends
- 1:49:21ago. The next loop Endurance Series
- 1:49:24New England Wrentham MATH 50K10 loops.
- 1:49:28This event took place at White Barn Farm. 50 runners, various
- 1:49:32distances. Here are the 50K results.
- 1:49:34First to third men's we got Thomas Lindstrom takes it home,
- 1:49:40413 wins by 1/2 hour. Good margin there.
- 1:49:44Second Hugo Lopez 442 and then third place is Michael Rath.
- 1:49:51He ran 452. And then for the women's first
- 1:49:55overall, the winner, Laura Lynn Weymouth six O 7, second place
- 1:50:00Emily Barbodos 613 and then third place Emma Wickman 642.
- 1:50:08Congrats everybody. That's the podium.
- 1:50:10And then the Spring Fever 8 hour ultra in Hingham, Mass.
- 1:50:15This took place at Wampatuck State Park.
- 1:50:19The reverse the course, reverse the curse year, right?
- 1:50:22So they reverse the course on this to try to get good weather.
- 1:50:25I think it worked. Here are the results.
- 1:50:29First place for the men, Tom Wilegico, 45 miles.
- 1:50:34He's the only one to go 45 miles at this 8 hour ultra.
- 1:50:37He wins it, takes it home. We got three men tied for second
- 1:50:43or no, I shouldn't say tied for second.
- 1:50:45Three men got 40 miles. Jeff Henson, Alejandro Mesa,
- 1:50:50Mezzo and then in fourth place James Meno Zek.
- 1:50:56They all got 40 miles. But I think it is whoever
- 1:50:58finishes that last lap first gets 2nd and 3rd.
- 1:51:03So Jeff got second, Alejandro got third.
- 1:51:06Those are the the results there. And then the women's side, we
- 1:51:09got three women go 35 miles. First place Catherine Damos,
- 1:51:14second place Lisa Curie, 3rd place Karen Diesso, they all
- 1:51:19went 35 miles. Those are the results.
- 1:51:22That wraps up the results. In addition to Run Amok and then
- 1:51:28we have some race previews. So this is coming up next
- 1:51:32weekend when you're listening to this Tark Spring Classic 50K
- 1:51:37Marathon, Half marathon, 10K April 25th, Weston, Mass.
- 1:51:42I mean, we know the Tark races. This event plate takes place in
- 1:51:46Jericho Town for us on a Bess Oak.
- 1:51:48I don't know what Bess Oak means.
- 1:51:51My vocabulary maybe isn't great. 10K looped a loop designed to
- 1:51:56show an artisanal maze of twisting single track trails.
- 1:52:01While the course is relatively flat and beginner friendly,
- 1:52:04runners should be prepared for typical New England spring
- 1:52:06conditions including rocks roots in a high probability of mud.
- 1:52:11As a low key no swag event, the focus is on community
- 1:52:15conservation with the 50K participants completing 5 full
- 1:52:19loops of the forest. That's Spring Tark, Spring
- 1:52:23Classic. Next up we got the Jake Bristol
- 1:52:26Lake Werrimag Ultra races 50K50 mile and 100K.
- 1:52:32This is taking place on the April 26th in New Preston, CT.
- 1:52:36Regardless, the oldest 100K in the United States?
- 1:52:39No way that's crazy. The oldest 100K in the United
- 1:52:43States? Leadville 100K.
- 1:52:47This race consists of scenic, primarily flat paved loops
- 1:52:50around the perimeter of Lake Warrimog.
- 1:52:54No, I'm just kidding. No, that is, that is me.
- 1:52:56No paved loops for 100K. Heesh.
- 1:53:00I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Justin
- 1:53:02Kowski is ripped. I've seen him run this race
- 1:53:05before. I can't just shout out Justin
- 1:53:06Kowski every time we see ACT Race.
- 1:53:09After an initial out and back section, runners settle into 7.6
- 1:53:14mile laps with 100K finishers completing 7 full circuits
- 1:53:19before a final dash to the finish line at the State Park.
- 1:53:22The course is famously fast and US track and field sanction
- 1:53:26making it a premier destination for those looking to set a
- 1:53:29personal record on a rolled ultra ultra.
- 1:53:32All right cool, so this is a this is a fast sanctioned Rd.
- 1:53:3750K50 mile 100K. Go get a good time on it.
- 1:53:39On April 26th is the last one that we got.
- 1:53:44Cobbs Cook Backyard Ultra 50K50 Miller April 26th, 2020 Sixth
- 1:53:50Edmonds, Maine Held in the beautiful Cobbs Cook Bay State
- 1:53:55Park, this event utilizes A modified backyard format where
- 1:53:59runners complete 5K or 4.167 mile loops every hour on the
- 1:54:04hour. The route follows vehicle free
- 1:54:07gravel roads that offer roughly 200 feet of gentle elevation
- 1:54:11gain per lap with the event capped at 10 hours for 50K12
- 1:54:15hours for 50 mile. It is a fat ass style of race
- 1:54:19with no entry fees, meaning participants are responsible for
- 1:54:22their own aid and must carry their gear from the park to the
- 1:54:26park gate to the start finish area.
- 1:54:28Nice so this is a free race? God I feel like have we not
- 1:54:32Cobbs Cook maybe? I looked in this earlier.
- 1:54:36I think this was initially going to be at the beginning of the
- 1:54:42month, but I'm pretty sure that it got pushed back so maybe I've
- 1:54:47looked at it before. That's why I know this isn't ran
- 1:54:49yet. So the cops Cup backyard ultra
- 1:54:54fat ass style, I think that they said, you know, they recommended
- 1:54:57a donation to the State Park. Very cool.
- 1:54:59Raise some money and yeah, backyard events.
- 1:55:03This is, you know, other is it. Is there even going to be a race
- 1:55:06director or just people just run, just run until they can't
- 1:55:10run. So they're probably no results
- 1:55:12from this event. But OK, guys, that was the race
- 1:55:16results race preview for last weekend and then this weekend
- 1:55:23and that's it for this episode. We we went no camera on this
- 1:55:26back end section. So I don't know what I'm going
- 1:55:29to put. I may just put a load now.
- 1:55:30Maybe I'll just put some video running in the mountains is
- 1:55:34probably better than but yeah, this was audio only.
- 1:55:38Appreciate you guys staying with another.
- 1:55:40This could be a 2 hour episode. This might be a 2 hour episode.
- 1:55:44So if you if you listen to the end shout out, I think it was a
- 1:55:48good one. And trustees heating up.
- 1:55:52We'll see you next week. Peace.
