- 1:32Speaker 1: hold these truth to be self evident, that all men
- 1:35Speaker 1: are created equal. Please welcome the money making conversations from
- 1:38Speaker 1: the Houston m l K Parade Foundation. Mr Charles Stamps,
- 1:43Speaker 1: Good morning, sir. What they told me you had a
- 1:46Speaker 1: better intro than I can give. They said, sometimes you
- 1:48Speaker 1: do your own intro? Is that true? Was enough? They said?
- 1:52Speaker 1: They told me to just shut up and let Mr
- 1:54Speaker 1: Stamps top you much too time about friend, But that's
- 1:58Speaker 1: really little, uh slip on those my pillows. It also stimilates.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It also stimilates the brain as well. We're good. We'll
- 2:07Speaker 1: tell us about the prey coming up. You contacted me.
- 2:10Speaker 1: You know, it's just it's a big anniversary time. You
- 2:12Speaker 1: always have a great thing tied to it. We talked
- 2:14Speaker 1: about MLK Parade in Houston, Texas is to be this Monday, correct,
- 2:19Speaker 1: That is correg Sir, Monday, January one, at ten am
- 2:23Speaker 1: in Houston's Midtown. We're celebrating our anniversary this year and
- 2:30Speaker 1: we want to do something special. So I'm not sure
- 2:35Speaker 1: if this permitted to say this, but Roysons has been
- 2:39Speaker 1: my mentor for years, and listening to him, we decided
- 2:43Speaker 1: to effect a fifty state marketing strategy. It has it
- 2:50Speaker 1: has paid dividends. We have representation from thirty four states,
- 2:57Speaker 1: three US territories, and four foreign countries this year. Uh.
- 3:05Speaker 1: We started off by wanting one marching band for every
- 3:10Speaker 1: year of existence, and that has double to fifty marching
- 3:15Speaker 1: bands from all over the country. Uh. There are about
- 3:22Speaker 1: thirty thousand participants in the parade and where they're providing,
- 3:28Speaker 1: we're expecting any excess of three hundred thousand spectators this year.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Bring my camera phone so I can take some picture.
- 3:37Speaker 1: That's do that. It's such a fun experience to be
- 3:40Speaker 1: a part. I've been fortunate to be named one of
- 3:43Speaker 1: the Grand Marshals in the past parade. And it's first
- 3:46Speaker 1: of all, the people who sitting on the streets watching
- 3:49Speaker 1: the parade with their family some standing, they really get it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It's really a good experience for them in Houston, Texas
- 3:56Speaker 1: doing that, doing that Monday, when you do the MLK
- 3:59Speaker 1: parade for right, that is correct, you know, that's why
- 4:05Speaker 1: I do it. Uh, it's an experience, as you already know.
- 4:09Speaker 1: It's a feeling that it's hard to duplicate, but what
- 4:14Speaker 1: you're seeing is actually the face of humanity, is what
- 4:18Speaker 1: humanity looks like. And it's a very humbling experience. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: one of the keys of success is that once you
- 4:26Speaker 1: experience that like you did, it's hard to stay It's
- 4:29Speaker 1: hard to stay away. They keep coming back and bringing
- 4:33Speaker 1: others and bringing others. And this year, uh it we
- 4:38Speaker 1: have set records across the board from a perspective or participation,
- 4:45Speaker 1: to spectatorship to coverage. UM and it is they coming
- 4:49Speaker 1: together of everybody and uh, we are very very excited.
- 4:54Speaker 1: We're looking forward to Monday, January one at t M
- 4:58Speaker 1: in Houston's Minto Now that's the actual parade, but it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: actually an entire weekend that you produce for the MK Parade,
- 5:06Speaker 1: which is like the the the headliner event of your
- 5:09Speaker 1: events that you put on weekend. Tell everybody a bit
- 5:11Speaker 1: that other events will be going on in Houston, Texas
- 5:14Speaker 1: that weekend, just because they have relatives coming down there,
- 5:16Speaker 1: or they may be listening locally in Houston on podcasts
- 5:19Speaker 1: or series exam. Absolutely, the m OK Grand Parade is
- 5:25Speaker 1: indeed the grand finale. It is the end results of
- 5:29Speaker 1: what we do twelve months out of the year. But
- 5:32Speaker 1: the other events, UH that are related to a Grand Parade,
- 5:37Speaker 1: we're not by design. As I mentioned earlier, We're a
- 5:40Speaker 1: national level event, so we literally have people coming in
- 5:45Speaker 1: the weekend of UH. If I can give you an
- 5:49Speaker 1: example three years three years ago, we got a phone
- 5:54Speaker 1: call from a high school administrator. I learned later she
- 6:00Speaker 1: was a band director from Osaka, Japan. Her name is Cri,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and she asked me to send her videos and footage
- 6:11Speaker 1: of different college halftime shows and she even named them.
- 6:15Speaker 1: She's hit Southern Gramlin, Jackson State. She went down the line.
- 6:19Speaker 1: This was three years ago. UH, and I did. I
- 6:24Speaker 1: sent her a college or a montage of you will
- 6:28Speaker 1: if you will look different? Uh sweat college is halftime shows.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Three months ago she re registered for the m OK
- 6:38Speaker 1: Grand Pride and she sent me the video performance of
- 6:42Speaker 1: her group. It is an old Girl two and twenty
- 6:47Speaker 1: member marching van. And from looking at the video, they
- 6:50Speaker 1: look and sound like Southern I mean it's almost like
- 6:55Speaker 1: watching it's almost watching a ballet music and I'm going
- 7:00Speaker 1: to whoa. You know, human beings can make sounds like that.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And then she shared a educational secret with me that
- 7:10Speaker 1: is coming in the East, but it's very uncommon in
- 7:12Speaker 1: the West. Uh. There educational system is much different from ours.
- 7:18Speaker 1: The reason she called me three years ago, it's because
- 7:21Speaker 1: her band were freshmen at that time. Now they're seniors. Uh.
- 7:28Speaker 1: They literally go to school twelve months out of the year.
- 7:31Speaker 1: They break some, you know, they break for a couple
- 7:33Speaker 1: of weeks in the summer, and they stayed together and
- 7:37Speaker 1: they grew into their routine and in their music and
- 7:42Speaker 1: believe me when I tell you it is incredible. And
- 7:46Speaker 1: if you want to listen to them, go to my
- 7:48Speaker 1: website m OK Grand Parade dot org and click on
- 7:53Speaker 1: commercial and not the first but the second set of
- 7:58Speaker 1: music lyrics it's them. We lifted them from their video
- 8:04Speaker 1: and you can see what they sound like. It is awesome.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So so so you got it laid out this year
- 8:10Speaker 1: as you do here. But you you when when when nationwide,
- 8:13Speaker 1: like you said, representatives from different states, different territory, US territories.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You asked for twenty five bands, you gotta triple that.
- 8:21Speaker 1: So how long is this parade going to be? Am
- 8:24Speaker 1: I going to be at the front of the parade
- 8:25Speaker 1: at the end of the parade? You know? How what
- 8:27Speaker 1: are you positioned to Rushan McDonald in the parade? Sir?
- 8:30Speaker 1: So I can tell my fan base we have to
- 8:35Speaker 1: put you up front for two reasons. They're coming out
- 8:37Speaker 1: to see you can Secondly, if we didn't put you
- 8:41Speaker 1: in the front of the parade, you wouldn't start off
- 8:45Speaker 1: in alignment in the parade until sometimes on tuc or Win.
- 8:50Speaker 1: That's why I'm asking that. That's what I'm asking right
- 8:53Speaker 1: there where where we shud I gonna be. I need
- 8:54Speaker 1: to get some food. I need to get some food
- 8:56Speaker 1: because you know, if anybody know, the parade it always stops.
- 9:00Speaker 1: So it gives a band a moment to have a
- 9:01Speaker 1: little moment in front of the group. So if you
- 9:03Speaker 1: got more than gonna it's gonna be some moments. And
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's a bad thing, that's an awesome thing. No, No,
- 9:11Speaker 1: we got a surprise for you. We've we've learned from
- 9:13Speaker 1: our old mistakes in the past. So all of our
- 9:16Speaker 1: honorees and Grand Marshals are going to lead the parade
- 9:20Speaker 1: and then your cars and escorts are going to circle
- 9:24Speaker 1: the great route coming back behind the Grand Grand Revealing Stand,
- 9:29Speaker 1: and that's where we're gonna put you so you can
- 9:30Speaker 1: actually watch the person. Unless we got to get you
- 9:35Speaker 1: out there. You can't to fight out of Houston. But
- 9:39Speaker 1: you sit there and we're gonna have some refreshments for you,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and you're gonna be in for a shoulders And this
- 9:45Speaker 1: thing is really as a kid say, Pops, this is
- 9:48Speaker 1: off the chain, it's up the change. Well I would
- 9:55Speaker 1: tell you this. Just let me just promote what he
- 9:58Speaker 1: does and say they've used in the in town Houston. Uh,
- 10:01Speaker 1: I'll be I'll be a part of the parade. That's
- 10:03Speaker 1: the MLK Grande Parade that's at ten a m in
- 10:06Speaker 1: midtown Houston. Uh. I've been fortunate. I want to use
- 10:08Speaker 1: the word blessed because if somebody asked you to be
- 10:11Speaker 1: to represent their brand to be a Grand Marshal. That
- 10:14Speaker 1: means that there's something that I've done positive in my
- 10:17Speaker 1: life that that allows me to be associated with a
- 10:19Speaker 1: great name like Dr Martin Luther King Jr. All my life,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I try to do what he's tried to do, give
- 10:26Speaker 1: people an opportunity to see their values in a different
- 10:28Speaker 1: phase of their life than a lot of people don't
- 10:31Speaker 1: see them. So, Sir, I want to thank you for
- 10:32Speaker 1: calling them. You know you're gonna see me on Monday.
- 10:35Speaker 1: You know it goes. I know it's all weekend. I'll
- 10:37Speaker 1: probably fly in on Friday to trying to be at
- 10:38Speaker 1: your Friday event. Okay, right, it's actually we moved it
- 10:42Speaker 1: to Saturday to make accommodations for you. Okay, going on
- 10:46Speaker 1: to you twice. We go on you at the reception
- 10:48Speaker 1: on Saturday the nineteen, and then of course the grand
- 10:52Speaker 1: finally on Monday. But if I got just two three
- 10:55Speaker 1: more seconds to say this for your your audience, if
- 10:57Speaker 1: you don't mind, I gotta go you back. I'm gonna
- 11:00Speaker 1: bring you back. Hi, ra Shan McDonald here, before I
- 11:03Speaker 1: left break, I didn't want to hear some great things
- 11:05Speaker 1: he wanted to say. Wrap up, with. I wanted to
- 11:07Speaker 1: bring back up Charles Stamp he's the creator, producer, executive
- 11:11Speaker 1: producer of the MLK Parade that I'd be a part
- 11:14Speaker 1: of this Monday in Houston, Texas Midtown. So Charles, what what?
- 11:17Speaker 1: What were you trying to say before we ended up
- 11:19Speaker 1: that break? Boy, uh Rahan, for your listening audience and
- 11:24Speaker 1: for the nation, you are much much to matters and
- 11:29Speaker 1: I just want to share with you. Uh. I hated
- 11:33Speaker 1: your guts initially because you kept pushing me to do
- 11:39Speaker 1: things that I didn't think I was capable of doing.
- 11:42Speaker 1: So two years ago I said, okay, I'm going to
- 11:45Speaker 1: show us on something. He's talking about the fifth state
- 11:48Speaker 1: marketing strategy. And you know what we did, and we
- 11:50Speaker 1: figured out a way to do it. We have thirty
- 11:53Speaker 1: we're in thirty media markets right now. We call a
- 11:57Speaker 1: marketing hubs. Example, if you want to take up four states,
- 12:01Speaker 1: so we would advertise on street Port losing and pick
- 12:03Speaker 1: up mississip Arkansas losing in Texas. This is what you
- 12:07Speaker 1: made me do. I didn't think that I had it
- 12:09Speaker 1: in me, but sir, you're indeed are proud of your
- 12:13Speaker 1: dr King. This is exactly a division that he had,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and I no longer think that I'm an ardinary person.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I think I'm Roshan McDonald. I think I can do anything.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I appreciate that comment, you know, And so you know,
- 12:26Speaker 1: the thing about it is that I just try to
- 12:27Speaker 1: push people to their greatness and I challenged them. And
- 12:30Speaker 1: every day people tell me things that I just consider
- 12:34Speaker 1: normal to me. When I encourage you to take those
- 12:37Speaker 1: gifts to the next level, I just consider normal. I
- 12:40Speaker 1: consider normal that you should be blessed. I consider normal
- 12:43Speaker 1: that you should have things that I don't have. I
- 12:44Speaker 1: consider normal that you should live a better lifestyle than
- 12:47Speaker 1: your parents. I consider normal that you to live the
- 12:50Speaker 1: dream that you feel that you are capable of living.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And that's all I try to do every day. And
- 12:55Speaker 1: if that's part of the legacy that Dr mart and
- 12:57Speaker 1: Luther King wanted to create for everybody, I've been living
- 13:00Speaker 1: this since I was eighteen years old, that is his legacy. Sir,
- 13:05Speaker 1: thank you, and thank you for the bottom of my heart.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And next week you stand in to night my friend. Okay,
