- 1:44Speaker 1: a return returning yuest because the first time, you know,
- 1:47Speaker 1: she she heard of me. I heard of her because
- 1:49Speaker 1: I see him on TV and all that good stuff.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But this time we have a relationship because I'm going
- 1:53Speaker 1: out of the l a next week. I'm dropping by
- 1:55Speaker 1: the shop. She's a painter, entrepreneur for latropists, and social
- 1:59Speaker 1: media influencer and has opened her own tattoo shop in
- 2:02Speaker 1: Los Angeles called Enigma Tattoo earlier this summer in June.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Please welcome back to money making conversations. I'm proud to
- 2:10Speaker 1: say that cat cat what's her girl? Hey, Hey, thank
- 2:15Speaker 1: you so much for having me again. I come a
- 2:17Speaker 1: long way since the last time we talk. I know,
- 2:20Speaker 1: let's talk about that's what I'm happen to happen. You're
- 2:22Speaker 1: back on the show and everything, because you know that
- 2:24Speaker 1: when I when I when you know, it's always a
- 2:26Speaker 1: journey with everything. That's that's the proximly about seven months
- 2:29Speaker 1: ago when we talked about eight months ago, when we
- 2:32Speaker 1: talked and and you was finding yourself. You was making
- 2:35Speaker 1: some decisions and you're doing great things, but you seem
- 2:38Speaker 1: to be not not what you wanted to be at
- 2:40Speaker 1: that moment. So let's talk about that journey where yet
- 2:43Speaker 1: right now? I love First of all, I can tell
- 2:45Speaker 1: there's a difference in your tone and your energy. You
- 2:49Speaker 1: feel really not saying you're a negative person, but your
- 2:51Speaker 1: spirit seems right. Thank you. You know, I really really
- 2:55Speaker 1: appreciate that. I've been out in Los Angeles for almost
- 2:59Speaker 1: two years now, out and it was a lot of
- 3:01Speaker 1: just figuring it out once you just kind of step
- 3:03Speaker 1: out on faith and moved to an entire new city
- 3:06Speaker 1: not knowing you know, too many people. It's the big risk.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So it took me a while to get it figured out.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And um, finally I feel like I got my purpose back,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you know, being a tattoo artist my entire adult life
- 3:17Speaker 1: since I was eighteen. Me finally having my own tattoo
- 3:21Speaker 1: shop just puts everything in perspective for me, and I
- 3:24Speaker 1: feel like I'm actually moving forward now instead of running
- 3:27Speaker 1: in circles. Now that then you lived that out rather smoothly,
- 3:31Speaker 1: my own tattoo shop, because we didn't even talk about
- 3:35Speaker 1: that eight months ago. That was that in the process
- 3:38Speaker 1: eight months ago. It's weird, Like I said, I've been
- 3:40Speaker 1: tattooing for so long. Um, like, tattooing is just my
- 3:44Speaker 1: my passion and that's what I do. And I am
- 3:47Speaker 1: so focused on creating and just figuring out, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 1: where I wanted to live with you know, the TV
- 3:53Speaker 1: showing so much happening at one time. I feel like
- 3:56Speaker 1: I didn't even really have the time to think about
- 3:59Speaker 1: to put together a plane in Like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 4:01Speaker 1: move here and open up my shop. Like it really
- 4:03Speaker 1: just it's set on my spirit. When when I felt
- 4:06Speaker 1: like it was the right time, you know, so it
- 4:10Speaker 1: it took me a long time, but like I once
- 4:12Speaker 1: I felt like, okay, now this is time for me
- 4:14Speaker 1: to pursue this. Um, I went and looked at spaces
- 4:18Speaker 1: and you know, started putting the piece together as to
- 4:20Speaker 1: what it would take and then UM, from there just
- 4:23Speaker 1: started rolling. So it was really like a six month
- 4:25Speaker 1: process from you know actually yeah, but the trade was
- 4:30Speaker 1: so UM has been there for so long that we
- 4:34Speaker 1: got we gotta brand. You gotta brand. You have a following,
- 4:36Speaker 1: so that's what helps in social media helps you out,
- 4:39Speaker 1: helping help you make that decision to open as well,
- 4:41Speaker 1: didn't Yeah, absolutely absolutely. I mean just being a tattoo artist,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, there's no bigger platform that you can ask for,
- 4:49Speaker 1: from a national TV show to you know, hundreds of
- 4:53Speaker 1: thousands of followers on Instagram. It's like it's a blessing
- 4:56Speaker 1: that you can't take for granted and you gotta take
- 4:58Speaker 1: full advantage of it. And you have been. So let's
- 5:01Speaker 1: talk about this whole process because my show Money Making
- 5:04Speaker 1: Conversation is about entrepreneurship. It's about people making that decision
- 5:08Speaker 1: that you made. Like you said, eight months ago, are
- 5:11Speaker 1: we discussed you was talking. You didn't bring up the
- 5:13Speaker 1: idea that I was going to open my own tattoo
- 5:15Speaker 1: shop in Los Angeles called Enigma Tattoo. Now, I lived
- 5:19Speaker 1: in Los Angeles fifteen years. Where about is it? So
- 5:22Speaker 1: I can you can? You can talk to me. Where
- 5:25Speaker 1: don't you open the shop? And where are the locations?
- 5:27Speaker 1: And why you chose this location? Um, it's Beverly Hills
- 5:31Speaker 1: Areas right on the corner of Pico and Robertson and anybody, yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 1: everybody that is from here that comes by there, like, man,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you couldn't have picked a better location. So it took
- 5:44Speaker 1: me a long time to figure out the location I lived.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I used to live in North Hollywood, and I didn't
- 5:49Speaker 1: want to do it. Well, you way away. You that's
- 5:52Speaker 1: a what's that's a one on one. That's one on
- 5:54Speaker 1: one north right North Hollywood. Uh um, North Hollywood. Yeah,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I think so, but I'm not there anymore. I moved
- 6:02Speaker 1: close to to the shop, but yes, and then I
- 6:06Speaker 1: looked in Culver City and I looked on mail Rows
- 6:09Speaker 1: where every other spot was a tattoo shop, and none
- 6:12Speaker 1: of it felt right to me. So I was actually
- 6:14Speaker 1: going to get my hair done um at this salne
- 6:17Speaker 1: in that area, and I'm looking around, I'm like, what
- 6:19Speaker 1: area is this? And then so I just drove all
- 6:21Speaker 1: up and down Pico, and I wrote down the phone
- 6:23Speaker 1: number to all the vacant spots, and there was one
- 6:26Speaker 1: that just looked like it had so much potential to me.
- 6:28Speaker 1: So I went, I looked through the window, I wrote
- 6:31Speaker 1: down the number, called, got the prices and everything, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: then from there I connected with the commercial broiltor and
- 6:38Speaker 1: he just closed the deal for me and everything went
- 6:42Speaker 1: smooth from there. So this is so cool. So I know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: Pico Robinson, that's the location of Enigma Tattooed that is
- 6:49Speaker 1: owned by Cat tat Cat. Let's talk about this so
- 6:53Speaker 1: because it was really a cool conversation. So do you
- 6:55Speaker 1: have any employees? Are you there by yourself? How? How
- 6:58Speaker 1: was working there? What's going on? Oh? No? Absolutely? There
- 7:02Speaker 1: are six of us total. Six amazing. Um sound like
- 7:06Speaker 1: a TV show to me, sound like a TV show.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I will take that that. So I'm not mad about
- 7:18Speaker 1: your TV. Now. I'm just gonna let you know that
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm speaking to the speaking to words come true. Okay,
- 7:24Speaker 1: thank you so much. Let's put that in the air.
- 7:28Speaker 1: But um yeah, six of us total, all great amazing
- 7:31Speaker 1: tattoo artists. Um. And it's just a blessing to be
- 7:34Speaker 1: able to work with other amazing artists. I moved here.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I've just been kind of doing my own thing, traveling,
- 7:40Speaker 1: doing private sessions the studios. So now it's like, Okay,
- 7:43Speaker 1: now I can build something where we can all come
- 7:45Speaker 1: together and you know, do something even greater. This is interesting.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Let me ask you this so because this is really
- 7:52Speaker 1: really cool conversation because we're talking about business. How you
- 7:55Speaker 1: started your business from a six months ago? You you
- 7:58Speaker 1: driving up and down the street, you're looking at you
- 8:01Speaker 1: looked in shops in different areas of Culver City, North Hollywood, Hollywood,
- 8:05Speaker 1: and you settled on this location. Now you're telling me, Sean,
- 8:08Speaker 1: I'm not in there by myself. I have six other people, okay,
- 8:11Speaker 1: your celebrity tattoo artists. How did you choose the other
- 8:15Speaker 1: six people to come on board that? Did they have
- 8:17Speaker 1: to have a social media following? Did they have to
- 8:20Speaker 1: have a client base? Did you look at their artwork
- 8:23Speaker 1: or they came with recommendations. How does that work? Yeah?
- 8:27Speaker 1: You know what, when I feel like, once you enter
- 8:29Speaker 1: the art world and the tattoo world, all that celebrity
- 8:32Speaker 1: and TV stuff doesn't mean anything. You could be on TV,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean it. You know, you could be
- 8:37Speaker 1: doing crappy work on TV. So for me, it was
- 8:39Speaker 1: all about the art, all about their skills that you
- 8:42Speaker 1: know there um their own clientele and everything. And I
- 8:46Speaker 1: pretty much like Cherry picked the artist, and I just
- 8:49Speaker 1: I was actually nervous to approach them because I'm like,
- 8:52Speaker 1: why would they want to come and work for me?
- 8:54Speaker 1: You know, it's really really nervous, and it's kind of timid.
- 8:57Speaker 1: So I just, you know, I just went out for
- 9:00Speaker 1: it and I sent them emails or text our reach
- 9:03Speaker 1: shots to them how I could, and I asked if
- 9:05Speaker 1: they would want to sit down and go to lunch
- 9:07Speaker 1: with me so I can tell them a little bit
- 9:08Speaker 1: about what I'm doing. And it worked, like you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: they were stoked to come on board, and now we're
- 9:16Speaker 1: just forming an amazing team. So I'm just blessed. This
- 9:21Speaker 1: is cool. Now, what is your vision of of a
- 9:24Speaker 1: tattoo shop, you know, store, your location? What what makes
- 9:27Speaker 1: you when you walk in there. What when Roshaw walks
- 9:30Speaker 1: in there? Well? What what? What? What? What world am
- 9:32Speaker 1: I walking into? Well when you ask, like if I
- 9:37Speaker 1: had always planned on opening up a tattoo shop, I
- 9:39Speaker 1: come from, you know, the tattoo industries small towns of
- 9:42Speaker 1: my college town, and all tattoo shops were kind of
- 9:46Speaker 1: small hole in the wall. You know, some people are
- 9:49Speaker 1: kind of like mean at the front desk is very gritty,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and that's not me. Like, I know, I'm a tattoo artist,
- 9:54Speaker 1: but I'm also a businesswoman and I always think that.
- 9:57Speaker 1: So for me to have the tattoo out, I didn't
- 10:00Speaker 1: want just a little hole in the wall, you know,
- 10:02Speaker 1: like grant type intimidating shops. Like, I wanted something that
- 10:06Speaker 1: would appeal to people in all different categories, not just
- 10:10Speaker 1: the tattoo industry. I wanted to appeal to people who
- 10:13Speaker 1: are interested in art, who are interested in beauty, and
- 10:16Speaker 1: just I wanted to be very very high class. Again,
- 10:19Speaker 1: with all these great things that have happened to you,
- 10:21Speaker 1: let's go back to you. You know, giving back uh
- 10:24Speaker 1: part of your life. You know, that was something that
- 10:26Speaker 1: really affected me positively hard to you. What are you
- 10:30Speaker 1: involved in? Right? Now from a charity standpoint, from a
- 10:33Speaker 1: from a philanthropist standpoint, you talked to us right quick. Um, Well,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I've been doing a lot of work with the Genesee
- 10:40Speaker 1: Center for Domestic Violence and that's been consistent. And then
- 10:43Speaker 1: UM also with the tattoo shop, UM being right where
- 10:46Speaker 1: it is, right in the center of the city was
- 10:48Speaker 1: giving me an opportunity to do more hands on things
- 10:51Speaker 1: with things that are currently going on in the community.
- 10:53Speaker 1: So right now, you know, kids are going back to school,
- 10:56Speaker 1: so it's like, okay, let's use this location to have
- 10:58Speaker 1: a back to school dry. People can drop off school supplies, backpacks, anything,
- 11:04Speaker 1: UM closed, anything that you know kids and teenagers might
- 11:07Speaker 1: need before they go back to school. And then we're
- 11:09Speaker 1: going to be UM giving that to the Boys and
- 11:11Speaker 1: Girls Club of Los Angeles. So that's what I'm currently
- 11:15Speaker 1: working on, UM and I just want to do more
- 11:18Speaker 1: stuff like that, Like let's we use this location to
- 11:20Speaker 1: always just help people and really give that become a
- 11:23Speaker 1: part of the community like I was in Chicago. Now
- 11:25Speaker 1: I'm able to do that. Here is love it. I
- 11:28Speaker 1: love it. I love it. Let me it's just on
- 11:30Speaker 1: the caution here in regards to your art work he
- 11:32Speaker 1: was doing. You was to splaying some of your paintings
- 11:34Speaker 1: and galleries. Where are we at right now with that? Um, well,
- 11:38Speaker 1: right now, my tattoo shop is kind of like an
- 11:41Speaker 1: art gallery. All the painting. Yeah, so there's artwork. All
- 11:44Speaker 1: my artwork is currently on the walls, and then the
- 11:46Speaker 1: other tattoo artist there for painters, will be hanging up
- 11:49Speaker 1: their artwork. The next thing I want to do is
- 11:51Speaker 1: do a collaborative art show with all the artists so
- 11:54Speaker 1: people can come out and see that, you know, these
- 11:56Speaker 1: testoo artists are also painters. And then from there, I'm
- 12:00Speaker 1: gonna do my annual solo art show. Um, it will
- 12:02Speaker 1: be my third one in Los Angeles, so I'm looking
- 12:05Speaker 1: forward to that. That'll probably be around November. Girl, I'm
- 12:09Speaker 1: talking to a businesswoman. I'm talking to an artist. I'm
- 12:14Speaker 1: talking to a person who gives back to the community. UM.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'm so impressed with you and thank you for coming
- 12:20Speaker 1: back on my show. Really, this is just a different
- 12:22Speaker 1: person that I'm talking to you now, a really person
- 12:25Speaker 1: who's in control of your future. That's what I hear
- 12:28Speaker 1: screaming through this these phone lines right now. And I'm
- 12:31Speaker 1: there for you, definitely, get that banner to me so
- 12:33Speaker 1: I can put it in my new so letter. I'm
- 12:34Speaker 1: very serious about that that and then you are linked.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Would click right back to shoot Azzle and now let's win. Okay,
- 12:45Speaker 1: we'll be right back with more from where I McDonald
- 12:48Speaker 1: and money making conversations. Don't touch that down. Think about it.

- 13:55Speaker 1: we sort of stopped paying attention and racked up a
- 13:58Speaker 1: lot of debt. Yeah it was. He blamed me for
- 14:01Speaker 1: my credit card debt and I blamed him for building
- 14:03Speaker 1: that man cave. It's awesome anyway, we stopped blaming each other,
- 14:07Speaker 1: did our homework and read that a smart way to
- 14:09Speaker 1: consolidate debt is to get a fixed rate loan. But
- 14:12Speaker 1: getting a loan was brutal and a time drain. So
- 14:15Speaker 1: I was in my man cave researching personal loans and
- 14:18Speaker 1: I found best Egg. They have an A plus rating

- 14:31Speaker 1: business day. I applied online with no impact to my
- 14:34Speaker 1: credit score. She always takes credit from my wins. But
- 14:37Speaker 1: long story short, she got an awesome loan, paid off
- 14:40Speaker 1: our cards and some bills while lowering our monthly payment.

- 16:17Speaker 1: Appreciate that bring them out as they said, you know
- 16:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying, when you gotta when you gotta resume,
- 16:24Speaker 1: don't leave it on the floor. And you got an
- 16:27Speaker 1: incredible resume. Man. Appreciate you started doing stand up, sir?
- 16:32Speaker 1: Why why? Why? Coming from the church. Honestly, I mean
- 16:35Speaker 1: my father was into the ministry and actually goes back
- 16:38Speaker 1: even before that. I me even the first time I
- 16:40Speaker 1: was ever officially on stage doing stand up, I was
- 16:42Speaker 1: about eleven years old and it was auditioned North Carolina
- 16:47Speaker 1: for the Apollo and it was like, you know, it
- 16:49Speaker 1: was like the Apollo used to travel to find, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 1: different acts and they were put on small talent shows
- 16:55Speaker 1: in smaller regions and in North Carolina, my dad I
- 16:59Speaker 1: would always get up and you know, tell Jesus jokes
- 17:02Speaker 1: in the church and stuff, and my dad was like, yo,
- 17:03Speaker 1: you should audition. I put together a whole set when
- 17:06Speaker 1: I was eleven and then from there just kept at
- 17:08Speaker 1: it and by the time you know, I was fifteen
- 17:10Speaker 1: years old, I was a regular at the comedy store
- 17:12Speaker 1: and improv in l A. So, you know, just try.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I knew I was doing. Uh, I was following in
- 17:18Speaker 1: my father's footsteps where I was sending too much to
- 17:20Speaker 1: be a preacher. So I was like, you know what,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and just still try to lead
- 17:26Speaker 1: the flock. But you know, and uh, you know, my dad,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I had an unorthodox upbringing, you know, bounced back and
- 17:34Speaker 1: forth to you know, amongst my parents and my grandparents.
- 17:37Speaker 1: But my dad always had that vision of like I'm
- 17:40Speaker 1: raising a man and I wanted to think for herself
- 17:42Speaker 1: and show them so many things. So even at a
- 17:44Speaker 1: young age that like eleven twelve, he was like, whatever
- 17:47Speaker 1: it is that you want to do, even if I
- 17:48Speaker 1: don't really have the same belief, I still want you
- 17:52Speaker 1: to to strive for your your goals and reached this
- 17:56Speaker 1: much successful ventures as possible. That's import That's that's the
- 18:00Speaker 1: relationship division because I was I admire you because of
- 18:05Speaker 1: the fact that you got it at such a young age.
- 18:07Speaker 1: You know, I was still confused or twenty two, I
- 18:09Speaker 1: was talented to do, but I was just confused. And
- 18:12Speaker 1: and the fact that you would we all have a
- 18:17Speaker 1: layer of confusion. But the fact that you said, man, eleven,
- 18:20Speaker 1: this is what I wanted to do. I was still
- 18:23Speaker 1: trying to play basketball. I was trying to fit in.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And I think that it's important based on the success
- 18:27Speaker 1: that you having in such an early age so continued success,
- 18:31Speaker 1: is that you made a decision to eleven, I'm gonna
- 18:33Speaker 1: follow this path. I enjoyed, I respected, I appreciate it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: And one thing it was my my dad always say
- 18:40Speaker 1: think outside the box. I never forget that. I mean
- 18:42Speaker 1: that was when that term was was new, and it
- 18:45Speaker 1: was like everybody else in our neighborhood and the projects
- 18:48Speaker 1: were trying to do the same things. And then in
- 18:50Speaker 1: comedy with something especially at my age, that a lot
- 18:53Speaker 1: of young people weren't striving to do. Uh, it was
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, and I did. I looked up to the
- 18:58Speaker 1: likes of our senior Hall and Eddie Murphy and you know,
- 19:03Speaker 1: all the guys on Deaf Jam and the Living Color
- 19:06Speaker 1: at such a young age, and you know, from mimicking
- 19:08Speaker 1: them to like creating my own material. It was different
- 19:11Speaker 1: from all the kids in the neighborhood who just wanted
- 19:13Speaker 1: to be rappers, which I wanted that as well. What
- 19:16Speaker 1: you've done, yeah, what it was, but it was like, yo,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it made me stand out. So even being in the
- 19:21Speaker 1: stand up club at fifteen, I was the youngest, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and I would be I would see everybody there, you know,
- 19:26Speaker 1: it was from the Chappelle's, the Tuckers, like everyone. But
- 19:30Speaker 1: my set was always unique because I was coming from
- 19:34Speaker 1: a fifteen year old perspective where everyone else was talking
- 19:36Speaker 1: about the same stuff except for me. I was thinking
- 19:39Speaker 1: outside the box and I was standing there and because
- 19:41Speaker 1: of your youth, I'm on the phone where he's in
- 19:43Speaker 1: the studio, I apologize amazing talent and here you see
- 19:47Speaker 1: actually studio would be talking and Nick, when you talk
- 19:49Speaker 1: about that age advantage warming up, that was your first break,
- 19:54Speaker 1: tell us about how that happened. They got really good,
- 19:57Speaker 1: launched you because that's what people saw as an actors
- 20:00Speaker 1: so years a potential start, and that's where it actually
- 20:02Speaker 1: started the fire inside of me as well, because you know,
- 20:05Speaker 1: being a stand up being a kid, uh you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: I would go from the comedy clubs straight to school
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the morning, uh, you know, two hours away in
- 20:13Speaker 1: San Diego from l A. And then I got an
- 20:16Speaker 1: opportunity one night, well you know, there's always agents and
- 20:20Speaker 1: people in the crowd, and some producers from Nickelodeon happened
- 20:24Speaker 1: to be uh in in the audience at the improv
- 20:27Speaker 1: one night, and you know, they took a meeting with
- 20:30Speaker 1: me or whatever, and they I went and saw a
- 20:32Speaker 1: couple of the shows and I saw that there was
- 20:34Speaker 1: a guy entertaining uh yeah, about four hours while you know,
- 20:39Speaker 1: they're making a television show. They got to keep the
- 20:41Speaker 1: audience entertained and informed. And I never knew what that was. Obviously,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know today that's an audience warm up person. And
- 20:47Speaker 1: I was like, but I could do that, you know,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I know I had I had enough energy to kind
- 20:52Speaker 1: of sustain being up there for four hours. So I asked,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you know, I was like, hey, let me get a
- 20:57Speaker 1: shot at that. And from there I started on Nickelodeon
- 21:01Speaker 1: doing the warm up and people were just I was
- 21:05Speaker 1: more entertaining in the show. So word got around town.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I started doing it for a bunch of shows. And then,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, being sixteen years old, you know, being able
- 21:14Speaker 1: to tell jokes, dance rapped seeing all that entertaining handsome
- 21:19Speaker 1: to well, thank you. But and then that showed me
- 21:22Speaker 1: that there was more jobs than just being in front
- 21:24Speaker 1: of the camp uh. And that's when I, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 1: got the bug for writing as well, because I was
- 21:29Speaker 1: sitting back and I was I would watch the different
- 21:31Speaker 1: sitcoms or even the sketches on Nickelodeon, and and because
- 21:35Speaker 1: they were speaking to my audience and I was writing
- 21:38Speaker 1: jokes every night, I was like, yo, I could write
- 21:39Speaker 1: for this as well. And that's how I got my
- 21:41Speaker 1: first job as the youngest staff writer in television. And
- 21:44Speaker 1: that was incredible because here's the deal. He was killing it. Okay,
- 21:47Speaker 1: you know, I was doing my thing on Sister Sister.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I think y'all let me warm up Sister Sister. One.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I went, I was got sick. I came over it.
- 21:57Speaker 1: And that's when it because he was he was just
- 21:58Speaker 1: a bona fide town But the thing that carries him differently,
- 22:02Speaker 1: he's a You're a genuinely nice guy. Thank you. That
- 22:05Speaker 1: that that separates yourself from anything else because you can
- 22:08Speaker 1: see you you You've met a lot of talents people.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I've met a lot of talents, but your ability to
- 22:14Speaker 1: be nice, to be welcoming. It's what carries yourself in
- 22:18Speaker 1: personal life as well as professionally, because on stage you
- 22:20Speaker 1: want to be a friend with you can't. And it's
- 22:23Speaker 1: it's it's energy. I'm a I'm an energy person, and
- 22:25Speaker 1: when I was younger, I didn't really know how to explain,
- 22:28Speaker 1: you know, but uh, you know obviously say I was
- 22:30Speaker 1: raised right Honestly. You know, when you walk into a room,
- 22:33Speaker 1: especially someone who's an entertainer or someone that everyone knows,
- 22:37Speaker 1: you want to feel that welcoming spirit. You want to
- 22:39Speaker 1: be able to have a smile on your face, even
- 22:42Speaker 1: if it's not the greatest day, or even if you're
- 22:44Speaker 1: not there to be an entertainer. But you gotta walk
- 22:48Speaker 1: around with a good spirit and and exude positive energy.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And you know you don't. You don't have to be
- 22:53Speaker 1: everybody's best friend because your boss. Now, yeah, yeah, So
- 22:57Speaker 1: I have to balance it, and you know, and and
- 22:59Speaker 1: and you have have to monitor your energy as well.
- 23:02Speaker 1: That's even in business as well. You gotta make sure
- 23:04Speaker 1: you're not uh loosely giving away your energy to things
- 23:08Speaker 1: that have uh no fruition and I have no power
- 23:11Speaker 1: to them. So so in that order, I've been able
- 23:14Speaker 1: to balance that pretty well to where I'm always kind.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I'm always trying to be a pleasing individual. But you know,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you gotta be stirring. You gotta be a businessman. And
- 23:24Speaker 1: that's the fun part about you and you you made
- 23:26Speaker 1: those decisions, you know, being a chairman, being a producer,
- 23:29Speaker 1: being an EP, being a writer. Because in the end,
- 23:32Speaker 1: because you have a group of friends, I always call
- 23:34Speaker 1: you like the Lebron of of how you have a
- 23:38Speaker 1: crew of people that have been with you for a
- 23:40Speaker 1: long time. You know what I'm saying, Like Lebron from
- 23:43Speaker 1: the day you know, I ran into I was so
- 23:44Speaker 1: fun when I came by the Wild and I tap it.
- 23:46Speaker 1: It was like a memory lane. When they walked up,
- 23:50Speaker 1: I was like, wow, you still well it was Niles
- 23:53Speaker 1: and all. That's crew. Man, It's so important and I
- 23:57Speaker 1: think that keeps you grounded as well. Right absolutely, man,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I like to dance with the people I came to
- 24:01Speaker 1: the party with, you know, And that's the idea of
- 24:04Speaker 1: to me, that's truly what success is all about. When
- 24:07Speaker 1: you can share it with people who who knew you
- 24:10Speaker 1: when you didn't have anything. And and you know, I
- 24:12Speaker 1: got the same manager from that. The people who saw
- 24:15Speaker 1: me in the improv still with me to this day.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I mean, and you even speak of people who you know,
- 24:20Speaker 1: we're like just my writing partners are now showrunners right right.
- 24:24Speaker 1: And actually I learned that from you guys. I learned
- 24:26Speaker 1: that watching and seeing how the camaraderie that you guys
- 24:30Speaker 1: all had coming up and I was like, yo, I
- 24:31Speaker 1: want to be able to do that and team are
- 24:33Speaker 1: you're doing it very very well. So where's the brand
- 24:35Speaker 1: going now with the voice because sometimes you step away
- 24:38Speaker 1: and you're an activist and I love that about you.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I was about to say, it's all about the community.
- 24:41Speaker 1: For me, it's about giving other people opportunities. Uh, It's
- 24:44Speaker 1: about opening doors and sharing the knowledge, wealth and wisdom
- 24:47Speaker 1: that I've obtained with everyone else. I mean, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: obviously I'm still in school. Hopefully you know, I'll be
- 24:53Speaker 1: able to you know, h you Howard University. I want
- 24:56Speaker 1: to go all the way I'm getting my masters, want
- 24:58Speaker 1: to go to my doctorate and eventually be a professor.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Uh and and teach the things that I've I've picked
- 25:05Speaker 1: up along the way. But it's all about the community,
- 25:08Speaker 1: whether it's teaching, whether it's entertaining, whether it's investing into us.
- 25:12Speaker 1: That's what it's really about. You're already a professor. You
- 25:16Speaker 1: already got your PhD. So you will get that degree.
- 25:19Speaker 1: You may not do the whole four year run, but

- 25:30Speaker 1: bron Oh Man. I appreciate you, hey, brother again, keep winning,
- 25:34Speaker 1: keep up living in the community. When you do that,
- 25:37Speaker 1: when you step out and do that, man, I smile

- 27:14Speaker 1: we stopped blaming each other, did our homework and read
- 27:16Speaker 1: that a smart way to consolidate debt is to get
- 27:19Speaker 1: a fixed rate loan. But getting a loan was brutal

- 30:00Speaker 1: a writer and the author of the new book that
- 30:02Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about on the show today. Bill Duke,
- 30:04Speaker 1: for your career on screen and behind the cameras. Since
- 30:07Speaker 1: I said his name, please welcome the money making conversations,
- 30:11Speaker 1: Bill Duke. God, bless you, my brother. Thanks for having me.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Hey Bill, how are you doing, my friend? I'm blessed man.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Thank you for having me on your show. Well, first
- 30:20Speaker 1: of all, uh, you know, you know, I know your talents.
- 30:22Speaker 1: We we we've we kind of met a couple of
- 30:24Speaker 1: times when you came by Steve Always Morning show and uh,
- 30:27Speaker 1: he was always quiet, but always had a message about
- 30:30Speaker 1: giving back man even Ben, that's that's about my fifteen
- 30:34Speaker 1: years ago when we had that conversation. And I see
- 30:37Speaker 1: you still maintaining that with your foundation. Talk to us
- 30:40Speaker 1: about it before we get into the book. Well, it's
- 30:43Speaker 1: the Duke Media Foundation and you can see it online
- 30:46Speaker 1: at Duke Media Foundation dot org. This Media Foundation dot org.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And we teach young people who are interested in our industry.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Uh two things. One is media literacy. We've gone from
- 30:57Speaker 1: some in television to Hulu, crackical, Amazon, Netflix, augmented reality,
- 31:06Speaker 1: virtual reality, cell phone apps. I mean it goes on
- 31:09Speaker 1: and on and on, and it's not about just purchasing
- 31:12Speaker 1: those things. What are the jobs behind those issues? And
- 31:17Speaker 1: the second thing we teach young people is financial literacy.
- 31:21Speaker 1: We are taught how to spend money, but now to
- 31:23Speaker 1: use money. So we teach them about what is the
- 31:26Speaker 1: FBI C, what's the funeral reserve? Was the stock market?
- 31:29Speaker 1: What is Wall Street? What's debt with his credit? Was
- 31:31Speaker 1: his compound interest? What bones? So that they're given the
- 31:36Speaker 1: information that they can utilize to their benefit in terms
- 31:40Speaker 1: of leveraging dollars for themselves, that's really amazing. And what's
- 31:45Speaker 1: the age group? And how can one uh I get
- 31:47Speaker 1: a young person assuming this male and female? And what's
- 31:50Speaker 1: the age group that participates in this in your foundation program?
- 31:54Speaker 1: They're high schools from fourteen to eighteen years old, and
- 31:58Speaker 1: we try to hold it four times a year. UM.
- 32:01Speaker 1: We are constantly raking funds for it because you think
- 32:05Speaker 1: we want to eventually take it national. Particularly, financial literacy
- 32:09Speaker 1: is so important you know we were how to spend
- 32:12Speaker 1: money for now to use it absolutely well, you know
- 32:16Speaker 1: the thing about it is always used me as an asset,
- 32:18Speaker 1: you know when you're doing it again. And Bill, first
- 32:21Speaker 1: of all a fan, You've been like a mentor to
- 32:24Speaker 1: me because I've watched your talent. Uh. People don't understand.
- 32:29Speaker 1: You don't have to know somebody for somebody to be
- 32:32Speaker 1: your mentor. It's just what they how they carry themselves,
- 32:35Speaker 1: how they present themselves on screen, the accomplishments, and watching
- 32:38Speaker 1: your career, I have to say you're you have been
- 32:41Speaker 1: a mentor to me because you've laid the groundwork to
- 32:43Speaker 1: say this can happen. This can happen. And you have
- 32:46Speaker 1: a production company that that produces film and television show
- 32:49Speaker 1: called Duke Media Entertainment. Let them let the fans and
- 32:52Speaker 1: the listeners know about that. Well, we um trying our best,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you know, to collaborate with them other company these UM Network, Studios, Online, etcetera.
- 33:03Speaker 1: To create content. We call it entertainment and we don't
- 33:07Speaker 1: creature anything, but we think that you know, you can
- 33:09Speaker 1: entertain people but also give them a little nothing to
- 33:11Speaker 1: think about, uh without you know, because we don't know everything,
- 33:16Speaker 1: but you know there are issues that raise their heads
- 33:19Speaker 1: that should be addressed and you can do it in
- 33:22Speaker 1: an entertaining way. So we try our best to do that.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And so um, that's that's that's our goal. Well, you
- 33:28Speaker 1: know the interesting thing about having a production company, because
- 33:30Speaker 1: I have one, is and but yours is way more
- 33:33Speaker 1: advanced in mind, Bill, and is that when you think
- 33:37Speaker 1: about how do people what are the wrong the incorrect
- 33:40Speaker 1: way that people present ideas to try to pitch ideas
- 33:43Speaker 1: to you? Aught your production company if you can give
- 33:46Speaker 1: by by listeners, uh quick, how to and how don't
- 33:51Speaker 1: to pitch an idea? Well, first of all, um, today
- 33:57Speaker 1: pitching an idea UM A lot of the creative executives
- 34:00Speaker 1: in our industry or accountant and you know you're going
- 34:05Speaker 1: to pitch an idea verbally. I think you're going to
- 34:09Speaker 1: protect yourself better if you have what it's called the
- 34:12Speaker 1: deck and it's a visual digital presentation of the vision. Um,
- 34:17Speaker 1: who is your basic audience? How many of them are there?
- 34:20Speaker 1: What is your gender, et cetera. Have a little sizzle
- 34:23Speaker 1: reel would be great, and have the script plus a synopsis.
- 34:27Speaker 1: But to answer your vital questions, I used to go
- 34:31Speaker 1: pitching with passion and all kinds of well my grandfather,
- 34:36Speaker 1: great grandfather with a slave or whatever, and that of that.
- 34:39Speaker 1: This is why it's important. And I pitched those ideas
- 34:42Speaker 1: and I go back to my agent because no one
- 34:44Speaker 1: picked the ideas up, and I said, what in the name,
- 34:46Speaker 1: but what's going on? And so he said, hey, Bill,
- 34:50Speaker 1: did you answer the essential questions in the first three
- 34:53Speaker 1: minutes of the pitch? Said? What is that question? He said, Bill,
- 34:59Speaker 1: what they want to know is I want to hell,
- 35:03Speaker 1: you're gonna make me my money back. Yeah, that's true.
- 35:09Speaker 1: That's true. I never thought about that. But you can't
- 35:13Speaker 1: have all the past that you want if you can't
- 35:16Speaker 1: tell them how you can make them the money back
- 35:18Speaker 1: and ain't gonna work too Well, that's not gonna work
- 35:21Speaker 1: at all. So that's so. It means they definitely having
- 35:23Speaker 1: that deck. And I also have a sense of what
- 35:25Speaker 1: a per episode costs is gonna be if that's if
- 35:28Speaker 1: you're talking about because I was talking to a president
- 35:31Speaker 1: of a network the other day and they asked me, uh,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I was talking about a cooking show, he said, immediately asked.
- 35:35Speaker 1: He immediately asked me, Okay, what's the prayer? Episode calls
- 35:38Speaker 1: and I went, oh, I would uh, let me, let
- 35:42Speaker 1: me get back with you. And because you know, because
- 35:44Speaker 1: a lot of people thought, you know, I had to
- 35:46Speaker 1: go there, you know, me, me, me had to go Uh.
- 35:48Speaker 1: I didn't expect that to come out in this conversation
- 35:50Speaker 1: so fast. I like that idea, what's the what's the
- 35:53Speaker 1: proy episode costs? I went, uh, because you know you
- 35:57Speaker 1: want to throwing the wrong number, throwing the wrong number?
- 35:58Speaker 1: Killer deal? Are you throwing the wrong number? And you
- 36:01Speaker 1: can lose money because you could have made more money?
- 36:03Speaker 1: So you So I hesitated. And so because everybody is
- 36:06Speaker 1: talking about digital, they're talking about streaming, they're talking about cable,
- 36:10Speaker 1: they're talking about television, and each one of those carry
- 36:13Speaker 1: a different price tag on what you can actually charge
- 36:16Speaker 1: per episode or what you can accomplish production quality. So
- 36:20Speaker 1: it's really amazing that you said that because I was
- 36:22Speaker 1: victim of that last week bill. So that's that's what
- 36:25Speaker 1: will So let's talk about this book. Let's talk about
- 36:28Speaker 1: this book. Man. I've read the book Bill Duke for
- 36:31Speaker 1: your career on screen and behind the camera, um My, my,
- 36:34Speaker 1: my first takeaway of this book because you were born
- 36:36Speaker 1: and raised and bookkeeps it in New York. That's where IBM.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I used to work for IBM. Sorry immediately uh related
- 36:43Speaker 1: to that story, UM, tell me about why did you
- 36:46Speaker 1: write this book? Bill? Well? I wrote it for several reasons.
- 36:51Speaker 1: You know, it's um the legacy from my family, you know. UM,
- 36:55Speaker 1: I really wanted people to know about the era in
- 36:58Speaker 1: which I grew up in and the people who guided
- 37:02Speaker 1: me through that time and writing this book and when
- 37:06Speaker 1: I was going through it, just the different levels because
- 37:09Speaker 1: drugs played a negative role in your life and uh,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and you was able to overcome that. But you know,
- 37:15Speaker 1: the one thing that in your in the relationship because
- 37:18Speaker 1: you were molested early on by a babysitter and that
- 37:22Speaker 1: affected your your your your relationship with women over the years.
- 37:26Speaker 1: And but I want I don't want to talk about that.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I want to talk about you the pioneer, you know, Uh,
- 37:32Speaker 1: you know early days of television, directing hit shows, you know,
- 37:37Speaker 1: doing incredibly uh. I feel movies that I would out
- 37:41Speaker 1: who I mean Deep Cover, which is one of my
- 37:43Speaker 1: all time favorite movies. How did you make that transition
- 37:47Speaker 1: to directing? Well, Um, I was directing, uh stage played
- 37:55Speaker 1: uh in New York and out here in l A
- 37:58Speaker 1: also it's always and I wrote my own stuff, but
- 38:02Speaker 1: I was always intimidated by the equipment of you know,
- 38:04Speaker 1: the cameras in me, the dolly grip, the dollies and
- 38:08Speaker 1: uh and the lights and everything. And I just overwhelmed
- 38:11Speaker 1: by that. And so UM I got um a show
- 38:16Speaker 1: called Comatown USA by um you know normally and Alex
- 38:20Speaker 1: Silly produced it. I was on a couple of seasons
- 38:24Speaker 1: um Janelle Allen and myself, but then I didn't work
- 38:26Speaker 1: two years after that, and I said I would, I
- 38:29Speaker 1: would to get over this year because I have to
- 38:30Speaker 1: have more than one skill. I applied to the American
- 38:33Speaker 1: Film Institute, got in and thank god ahead, I said, wow,
- 38:39Speaker 1: that's awesome, and uh, I got a film out of
- 38:42Speaker 1: that called The Hero, and it got some recognition. I
- 38:44Speaker 1: shot it around to everybody. They wouldn't take it, and
- 38:48Speaker 1: so they won't let me directly. I went away on
- 38:50Speaker 1: a retreat for um meditation. I'm a transible meditation practitioner,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and I wanted to cheap my agent Coos, and he says,
- 38:59Speaker 1: Uhdavid Jacobs wanting to see you from not landing music producer.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I said what, So I flew. I went back and
- 39:07Speaker 1: met with David Jacobs. It was like a strange little meeting,
- 39:10Speaker 1: very brief, and then um, for my age, it's not
- 39:12Speaker 1: gonna happen. A week later, the agent calls me and said,
- 39:15Speaker 1: David Jacobs wants you to direct the first episode not Landing.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I cheered. I was so happy. Then I went to
- 39:23Speaker 1: work and I was there for like, you know, prepping
- 39:27Speaker 1: the the U And the last day of prep, Joe
- 39:30Speaker 1: Walentine comes says, do you know we know you're gonna
- 39:32Speaker 1: be a great director from your real I said, what reel?
- 39:36Speaker 1: Well the view you turned into David? I said, no,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I just got to he's a wait a minute. He
- 39:40Speaker 1: goes to the David Jacob's office. David Jacobs had mixed
- 39:44Speaker 1: my box up with someone else's. That's why I got
- 39:49Speaker 1: my first job. That's a blessing. That's a blessing, but God,
- 39:54Speaker 1: God blessing. But also the obviously I was going to
- 39:56Speaker 1: tell you was about my first day on Dallas. I
- 39:59Speaker 1: was the first black director on Dallas. And I go
- 40:01Speaker 1: to the gates and I rolled the window down and
- 40:04Speaker 1: the security guard said to me, who are you delivering for?
- 40:10Speaker 1: That was that was a moment, and that's all I
- 40:14Speaker 1: read that in the book and let everybody know that
- 40:16Speaker 1: I don't want to get wear all them nuggets, Bill,
- 40:17Speaker 1: because I remember that. And you you you paused momentarily
- 40:20Speaker 1: because you didn't want to like become a become a
- 40:23Speaker 1: black panther back in the day black pather on it.
- 40:27Speaker 1: But do me a favor. First of all, thank you
- 40:30Speaker 1: for taking the time to come on my show. I
- 40:32Speaker 1: really want to bring you back, because man, just like
- 40:35Speaker 1: a like a conversation. A conversation would be, can you

- 41:47Speaker 1: we sort of stopped paying attention and wracked up a
- 41:49Speaker 1: lot of debt. Yeah, it was stressful. He blamed me
- 41:52Speaker 1: for my credit card debt and I blamed him for
- 41:54Speaker 1: building that man cave. It's awesome. Anyway, we stopped blaming
- 41:58Speaker 1: each other, dinner homework and read the A smart way
- 42:00Speaker 1: to consolidate debt is to get a fixed rate loan.
- 42:03Speaker 1: But getting a loan was brutal and a time drain.
- 42:06Speaker 1: So I was in my man cave researching personal loans
- 42:09Speaker 1: and I found best Egg. They have an A plus
- 42:12Speaker 1: rating with the B B B and best Egg handles

- 42:23Speaker 1: one business day. I applied online with no impact to
- 42:26Speaker 1: my credit score. She always takes credit from my wins.
- 42:28Speaker 1: But long story short, she got an awesome loan, paid
- 42:31Speaker 1: off our cards and some bills while lowering our monthly payment.

- 42:48Speaker 1: You're listening to money making conversations. Mighty making conversations is
- 42:52Speaker 1: your show. I just hope a lot of people don't
- 42:55Speaker 1: understand that when I say that publicly, Sean McDonald, you
- 42:58Speaker 1: don't let me. I don't book nobody on your show.
- 43:01Speaker 1: That's true. That's true. That's true because you don't know anybody.
- 43:03Speaker 1: That's That's how it works that I know everybody and
- 43:06Speaker 1: everybody calls me, and that way I can do to
- 43:09Speaker 1: him like I know him, say like this person in
- 43:11Speaker 1: the background, See how these people I'll be talking to
- 43:14Speaker 1: people I'm trying to introduce. If I got to set
- 43:16Speaker 1: it up and she in the background laugh that ain't
- 43:18Speaker 1: fair that they're right. But we're gonna get to her
- 43:20Speaker 1: right now because she probably just really just talk. She
- 43:23Speaker 1: got time to a busy person. My next guest is
- 43:26Speaker 1: born and raised in the super Bowl City, Philip and
- 43:35Speaker 1: one of the stars of the new seat of your

- 44:00Speaker 1: Conversation Now, Fisa Williams, thank you what a warm what
- 44:07Speaker 1: a warm wacome or you know, if you if I
- 44:09Speaker 1: would have said more, but I got nervous because you
- 44:11Speaker 1: were talking and cheering in the background. You know, there
- 44:14Speaker 1: are rules to introduction the FISA. The rules. Now, I
- 44:18Speaker 1: know you're on this popular sere. Let's let's let's get
- 44:20Speaker 1: to let's get to this series. First of all, who
- 44:22Speaker 1: are yet right now? Where are you're at talking to
- 44:24Speaker 1: me from? I'm home and home is home? Is right now?
- 44:29Speaker 1: Atlanta or Atlanta, Georgia. Okay, you could have come in
- 44:34Speaker 1: studio and did this interview girl this, I'm really mad. Now,
- 44:39Speaker 1: I'm really mad. Now to make you mad, don't make
- 44:42Speaker 1: me mad. Because you're a superhero. You're superhero, You're thunder.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Thunder can make a difference. Now, let's talk about We've
- 44:48Speaker 1: got a lot of things to talk about. Your your
- 44:50Speaker 1: your give back programs, uh, your uplifting programs by Saturday's Dreaming.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Let's talk about it and some of the shows you've
- 44:57Speaker 1: done before. Let's talk about Black Lightning. How you auditioned
- 45:01Speaker 1: for that role and how it is so it's changing
- 45:06Speaker 1: the game for you know, we all know about Black Panther,
- 45:10Speaker 1: we all know about that, but Black Lightning has carved
- 45:13Speaker 1: out his own niches is playing very well on Netflix.
- 45:17Speaker 1: I follow it and I went from CT Did you
- 45:19Speaker 1: know you're hot when Netflix picked you up a quickly.
- 45:22Speaker 1: That's a good sign right there that you've got something
- 45:23Speaker 1: going on. So tell us about how did you audition
- 45:27Speaker 1: and how your life has changed that you've been associated
- 45:30Speaker 1: with Black Lightning. Well, I got the call from my
- 45:33Speaker 1: manager about a year and a half ago that I
- 45:36Speaker 1: had this all this thing called Black Lightning. I didn't.
- 45:38Speaker 1: I never I never heard of Black Lightning. Never knew
- 45:41Speaker 1: that we even had a black superhero along with his
- 45:45Speaker 1: family that was a part of the d C universe.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Never knew. So I go, I never knew either. Don't
- 45:51Speaker 1: worry about it. I never do. I never knew. But
- 45:53Speaker 1: I get the script and I was like, first of all,
- 45:58Speaker 1: knowing that Mara instantly mckill over at the helm of
- 46:01Speaker 1: it all, and they were the writers and the executive producers.
- 46:04Speaker 1: I knew that this would be a good show because
- 46:06Speaker 1: their work speaks for itself. I'm a huge fan of
- 46:08Speaker 1: their work, always wanted to work with them. So I
- 46:11Speaker 1: was first excited to read the script because I knew
- 46:13Speaker 1: they were attached to it. So I read the script
- 46:16Speaker 1: and I was like, I just appreciated the story. Most
- 46:19Speaker 1: superheroes you see are, you know, in their early twenties,
- 46:23Speaker 1: and here with Black Lightning, you have a middle age
- 46:26Speaker 1: man with the family who is a high school principle.
- 46:30Speaker 1: We've just never seen or heard this story before. And
- 46:32Speaker 1: I appreciated the strong, bold, and independent female characters that
- 46:37Speaker 1: they created within this world. So I went in for
- 46:40Speaker 1: the job and I was like, listen, y'all y'all looking
- 46:42Speaker 1: for me. I felt so connected. I felt so connected
- 46:47Speaker 1: to the character and felt so connected to the story
- 46:50Speaker 1: that I just really went in so focused, and I said,
- 46:53Speaker 1: just go in and let them know that you are her.
- 46:56Speaker 1: And that was just the goal, you know, to go
- 46:58Speaker 1: in and and show them that I understood this character
- 47:02Speaker 1: and that I was really wanting to give my voice
- 47:04Speaker 1: over to her and I under you know, I just
- 47:06Speaker 1: said everything about her world so um coming from a
- 47:09Speaker 1: city like Silly, I understand some of the problems that
- 47:13Speaker 1: that that the city Freeland faces within the show, and
- 47:16Speaker 1: just wanting to be a voice for that and hopefully
- 47:19Speaker 1: spark change, you know, with within our country, within our city,
- 47:23Speaker 1: because you don't see a superhero, you know, with his family,
- 47:26Speaker 1: as I mentioned before, you you know, you usually see
- 47:28Speaker 1: this young superhero flying and jumping all around, and you
- 47:31Speaker 1: have this family of superheroes and and that's just an
- 47:35Speaker 1: amazing concept of a really cool idea. And kudo to
- 47:38Speaker 1: everyone over at d C and Tony, Isabella and Trevor
- 47:43Speaker 1: who created you know, this, this this character. Yeah, let's
- 47:46Speaker 1: let's talk about this show. Here about Rushawn McDonald black
- 47:50Speaker 1: lightning experience, because It's really all about me. Really, you know,
- 47:53Speaker 1: I'm a fan's a fan. I'm a fan. Okay, So
- 47:57Speaker 1: so I'm seeing it being promoted. I know. In fact,
- 48:00Speaker 1: I didn't know that uh Mara, the slave family had
- 48:04Speaker 1: been involved, was involved in it at all. I just
- 48:06Speaker 1: saw this and my first thought was they would not
- 48:09Speaker 1: have the production quality is a black show. I thought
- 48:12Speaker 1: they wouldn't have the production quality to deliver the special effect.
- 48:16Speaker 1: That that was my first thought. Rushin had already made
- 48:18Speaker 1: some preconceived thoughts that he wasn't gonna watch thoughts. These
- 48:23Speaker 1: are my thoughts, And I'm just trying to be honest,
- 48:24Speaker 1: you know, I said, you know they probably you know
- 48:27Speaker 1: they do. You know, they're trying to get on the
- 48:29Speaker 1: hype of the Black Panther dropping this little black show in.
- 48:32Speaker 1: And you know, I ain't wasted my time because I'm
- 48:34Speaker 1: a superhero nut by the way, this week okay, okay.
- 48:38Speaker 1: So so then my wife she knows I'm a superhero nut,
- 48:41Speaker 1: so she says, she watches the premiere and then she goes,
- 48:44Speaker 1: you better watch the show. I go, why you best
- 48:48Speaker 1: watched the show? You're missing something? I said, really really,
- 48:52Speaker 1: well whatever, so she recalled for three weeks went by.
- 48:55Speaker 1: I didn't watch the show, she said, and she's watching
- 48:59Speaker 1: it and giving me like updates. Would you stop telling
- 49:03Speaker 1: me I'm not gonna watch the show so I wish,
- 49:05Speaker 1: she said. She set me down. I binge watched the
- 49:09Speaker 1: first three episodes. I've missed and have not missed an
- 49:12Speaker 1: episode since. You can give me. Give me a quiz
- 49:15Speaker 1: right now, pass that's how much of a fan because
- 49:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna telling you why. Because of the fact that,
- 49:23Speaker 1: first of all, the villains are fantastic. The villains are fantastic.
- 49:28Speaker 1: That's key to me. You know, do the villains have credibility?
- 49:31Speaker 1: Do you do they throw fear in you? Do? They do?
- 49:34Speaker 1: They do? They do? They map out? And then all
- 49:36Speaker 1: of a sudden there's innate danger that the secret can
- 49:39Speaker 1: I get out? And then the dynamic between their their
- 49:43Speaker 1: their parents because they're divorced, and she divorced him because
- 49:47Speaker 1: he was a superhero, because she didn't want to deal
- 49:49Speaker 1: with the pressure of him fighting crime. The same thing
- 49:54Speaker 1: her daughter. She I love the fact that the daughter
- 49:56Speaker 1: got a little to Mama and her I'm talking about
- 49:58Speaker 1: the younger daughter. And then Thunder, who I'm interviewing right now,
- 50:01Speaker 1: she got all daddy in her. She all about saving
- 50:04Speaker 1: the community. She all about stepping out there. Teller were
- 50:08Speaker 1: right now, she thunder, but she realizes that she can't
- 50:11Speaker 1: because the people know how to attack and know how
- 50:13Speaker 1: to get the family. That's why the superheroes can't tell
- 50:15Speaker 1: her who they are. That's why superheroes really can't have
- 50:17Speaker 1: loved ones. That's why this show works because the fact
- 50:20Speaker 1: that they are family and the fact that let's let's
- 50:23Speaker 1: put his way. Uh, it'd be like the Cosby's superheroes
- 50:28Speaker 1: because they the fathers of principle. I'm just telling you listening,
- 50:31Speaker 1: the fathers of principles, that's all. That's a really recognized
- 50:34Speaker 1: and good job. The moms are scientists. She's a doctor,
- 50:39Speaker 1: so that's another high profile profession. So you have two
