- 0:05Hey, hey, my beautiful humans. And welcome back to another
- 0:09episode Aligned and Thriving for teachers.
- 0:11It is your resident organiser in chief, Mel here with a good
- 0:15cuppa and a collection of absolute pearlers.
- 0:18So this is going to be good. This episode is going to make
- 0:24things funny. I'm just, I'm just going to jump
- 0:27on it. Today we're diving into things I
- 0:29never thought I'd have to say in a classroom.
- 0:32Plus maybe some of the weirdest things kids have ever lobbed
- 0:35back at me. No Philtre, pure comedy gold.
- 0:37So buckle up. You might snort laugh in the
- 0:39staff room if you're listening there.
- 0:40But this is what a normal person should never really need to say
- 0:45or hear at work. But yet we as teachers, we do
- 0:48this on the daily. Let's start with #1 the bodily
- 0:53function bonanza, I'd like to call it.
- 0:56This is the classics. OK, who farted and did you
- 1:01follow through? Because the smell is bordering
- 1:05on hazardous materials and the culprit is giggling so hard that
- 1:09their chair is vibrating. You've probably had that happen
- 1:12to you before in a classroom or, and this is very much a TMI
- 1:17moment, or you have had to do said, dropping your guts and
- 1:24walking away. And then they blame it on the
- 1:26other students in your class and you're going, oh, ha, ha, ha.
- 1:30That works really well in a high school setting.
- 1:32Just so you know, I actually had an IP who did that really well.
- 1:38She was very gassy, I have to say, but she would very much do
- 1:43something like that. And then the kids would blame
- 1:46each other in the class. So you might get away with those
- 1:49things too. You might also have one of these
- 1:52situations. What is that wet patch on the
- 1:55floor? Hmm.
- 1:58In teaching there's only usually two options.
- 2:01It's either a leaky water bottle or sadly A bodily fluid.
- 2:06And may the odds be ever in your favour depending on the class
- 2:10that you are teaching. Lower down grades I'd be opting
- 2:13for bodily fluids, higher up I'd be really hoping that it was the
- 2:18water bottle. But if you told 15 year old me
- 2:23that I would one day have an internal scale for it's probably
- 2:26just water versing, I need a biohazard kit.
- 2:30I probably would have just laughed in your face.
- 2:32But now I honestly have a record of the times I've had to do
- 2:35this. Number 2, The area of stop doing
- 2:40weird things with my clothes saga.
- 2:44Here's a good one for you. While teaching my beautiful
- 2:47little prep class who don't understand the meaning of a
- 2:49boundary. Even when I put a physical hula
- 2:52hoop on the floor around my feet when I was sitting on the chair
- 2:55reading a story, I had to look down at my shoe and politely
- 2:59tell my young little human please stop licking my shoe.
- 3:03And those gorgeous little blue eyes looked after me and said I
- 3:06just wanted to know what it tasted like.
- 3:11Yeah, friends, that five year old was suction cupped to my
- 3:14sneaker like a Dyson. Why?
- 3:18Because it smelt like rubber and he just wanted to know what it
- 3:21tasted like. Fairpoint, right?
- 3:24No, please get out of my bubble. I did talk to him very nicely
- 3:29and remind him that I have a bubble for a reason.
- 3:33Remember to stay out of the little bubble and my shoes are
- 3:35inside my bubble, so please don't lick my shoes again.
- 3:40Then you get the classic no, my skirt is not a tent, We're not
- 3:45hiding in there. Nor is my skirt a cosy reading
- 3:49area, or a blanket Fort or a portal to Narnia.
- 3:53Although one kid was very convinced that climbing inside
- 3:56my jacket would get him there. Spoiler alert, he only found
- 4:01that I smelt like my deodorant and decided to comment on that
- 4:04instead. Because you can't get to Narnia
- 4:06by hiding inside my jacket. He learned that the hard way.
- 4:10But yes, if you are going to teach early childhood, in
- 4:13particular kindergarten classes, you might find yourself having
- 4:17those discussions with those tiny humans and reminding them
- 4:20that your clothes are not a place for hiding.
- 4:23And do remember to wear, what's the word, like, leggings,
- 4:29tights. That's what I was thinking of
- 4:30under your skirts and dresses when you are teaching in that
- 4:33space because you never know who wants to go exploring.
- 4:36Wow, that sounds really bad when I say that out loud, but I hope
- 4:40you understood what I meant there and where that was
- 4:42heading. Oh gosh, let's go to the high
- 4:45school upgrade instead. It's the same vibe, just a
- 4:48different wardrobe really. You might walk past the teens
- 4:51and Yep, this is talking from experience.
- 4:53Oh miss, that's gets a bit of a shame.
- 4:55Dope. My insta OG said that the plates
- 4:58are closest together so I can tell yours is a dope.
- 5:03Yes, I really liked walking through those corridors because
- 5:07I would always get a really good commentary on the clothes that I
- 5:10was wearing. I'm pretty sure at one point I
- 5:12was wearing wearing Pumas. They were black and white Pumas.
- 5:17I still have them. I still wear them and the kids
- 5:20would say to me, why didn't you just go buy the proper NYX mist?
- 5:25Why did you buy the Pumas? Is that because they were
- 5:27cheaper? Yeah.
- 5:30Yep. Is that because they're more
- 5:31comfortable? I didn't want the Nike Dunk
- 5:34shoes. I actually liked the Pumas.
- 5:36I'd tried both on, but I wasn't going to justify myself to them.
- 5:39So I just smile and wave. It's just seventh period
- 5:43English, babe. I can get through this.
- 5:46Then you get the beautiful identity crisis corner era.
- 5:50So you get let's go a bit of to and throw kid.
- 5:53Mum, me answers automatically. Yes, darling.
- 5:58Oh right, not my child. Q class collapsing in laughter.
- 6:03Yep, that's what happens. Or you might get the miss versus
- 6:07missus versus miss dilemma. I know I'm a missus because I'm
- 6:12actually married and I have been for a very long time now.
- 6:16Yep. So now I get either 2 responses.
- 6:19You go to a high school and you get called miss miss miss
- 6:22because they honestly just can't remember your name.
- 6:25And then when I go to each primary school, I get miss or
- 6:29missus depending on the grade because they forget and I will
- 6:32politely say Oh well, I'm a missus because I'm married.
- 6:34I have a husband so I get to be a missus.
- 6:37Wow, reply said child, you must be like 100, right?
- 6:43Thanks champ. I'm just going to hobble off
- 6:45over there to retirement because I'm done.
- 6:48Nah, you might get that a lot. I know I got called mum a lot
- 6:54and I still do, by quite a number of children, especially
- 6:58after a holiday break. And you think how many times
- 7:01have you called out to your mummy in the holidays, my
- 7:03darling? Because I feel like their name
- 7:05was very much overused. But I do love to answer because
- 7:09I think it's just as embarrassing for the child as it
- 7:12could be for the person that they're talking to.
- 7:15So I like to just name it up. It's a little bit funny then
- 7:20these are some good ones. I was actually sitting down with
- 7:23my mom talking about these things and saying, oh, mom, what
- 7:27what sort of what sort of comments did we we have when we
- 7:31were teaching from kids? Are there any that you could
- 7:33remember? And her response was probably
- 7:35not any that are appropriate, which is a little bit funny if
- 7:38you know my mom. But there is one that I do
- 7:41remember when I used to work in a school in particular and I was
- 7:46doing some relief at the time and my mom was there and my mom
- 7:50dyes her hair as do I Obviously you get that lovely bit of
- 7:54regrowth that starts coming out and quite often if you've had
- 7:58foils or just A1 colour, you get that nice when you part your
- 8:01hair. This the strip down the middle.
- 8:04Well, I can remember a small child politely saying to my
- 8:09mother, oh, I love your hair. It has a drag strip.
- 8:13Then proceeding to pick up his toy car and racing it down the
- 8:17top of her head. So yes, he thoroughly enjoyed
- 8:21the fact that she had a drag strip on her head.
- 8:25Then for me, so I can remember getting so my eyebrows are
- 8:30tattooed because I don't have any eyebrows like they're not
- 8:34non existent. So when I was teaching for a few
- 8:38years, I actually went and got my eyebrows tattooed.
- 8:42So that's that's an experience all in itself.
- 8:45If you, if you know, you know. Anyway, obviously with a tattoo,
- 8:50when you first get them done, they're really, really dark.
- 8:52So basically like angry bird energy.
- 8:55Like I had awesomely dark eyebrows.
- 8:58I didn't factor that in because I got them done in holidays, but
- 9:02I didn't factor in that it takes like a month for it to go back
- 9:05to normal. So when I went back to work
- 9:08teaching my grade 5-6 class, I still had my angry bird
- 9:12eyebrows, so I just owned it. I didn't really like, I'm not
- 9:16too faced, but I went and I obviously turned up to teach my
- 9:20class. The response from my kids was
- 9:24very interesting. But here I was pretending to
- 9:27just get on with my life and teach my beautiful class.
- 9:29And we're about to do a spelling test and one of the kids puts
- 9:32their hand up. Miss, Miss, are you OK?
- 9:35You look worried. And then another one puts their
- 9:38hand up and goes, actually, you look like Batman, but in a good
- 9:41way. Oh, excellent.
- 9:43So now I'm vigilante chic. This is great.
- 9:46I thought, Oh dear, I'm going to have to shut this down.
- 9:48So we started moving on and we started getting on with our
- 9:50spelling test. And then at the end, I went to
- 9:53ask a question and one of the boys, bless him, puts his hand
- 9:57up to answer my question. And I said yes, we'll just call
- 10:01him Jimmy. Yes, Jimmy.
- 10:03And he looks up at me and goes eyebrows and then looked back at
- 10:08me. And I went, pardon.
- 10:09And he goes, wait, what? Oh, oh, yeah.
- 10:14And then answered the question. But he got so embarrassed and
- 10:19the whole class just started laughing.
- 10:21And then, of course, you get the girls going.
- 10:23Yeah, Miss, what did happen to your eyebrows?
- 10:24So I just explained. I got my eyebrows tattooed.
- 10:27They're really dark at the moment.
- 10:28They're going to fall out. But that poor boy did not get
- 10:32over it. And the funniest thing was is he
- 10:35was in my grade 5-6 class that I followed to, excuse me, to grade
- 10:397. So he still remembers that when
- 10:42I go teach you in grade 7 and moves on to high school.
- 10:44And I'm so sorry about that. But they were really dark.
- 10:48They were like scary like, yeah, I know.
- 10:50So I own that. But it was just those funny
- 10:53little moments that they they have no philtre.
- 10:55It just comes out the same as when they walked past you and
- 10:58you might have put on a few kilos after winter and you get
- 11:00the oh miss, are you having a baby?
- 11:03Nope, sorry. That's just leftover baby from
- 11:062015 when I did have my 2 babies.
- 11:09So yes, I did have twins and I did have a bit of excess weight
- 11:13there. Then you get the flip side.
- 11:15So now I've lost a bit of weight getting ready for summer, and
- 11:19now I get the other side, which is oh, miss, you've got bones
- 11:22now. Bones now.
- 11:25Oh, I've actually had them the whole time.
- 11:28Fun plot. Plot.
- 11:30Can't talk. Fun plot twist there.
- 11:35My my own child actually did that to me too.
- 11:37She was looking at my collarbones because they mustn't
- 11:40have stuck out before. And she was what is that, mom?
- 11:43What do? What do they do?
- 11:45Like it's called your collarbone.
- 11:46You've got them too. Oh, you've never had those
- 11:48before. Kids, again, have no philtre.
- 11:54They are honestly like human Facebook posts, especially when
- 11:59it comes to their little tales from home.
- 12:02And again, keeping everyone anonymous here.
- 12:06But you have those children that come to school and oh, Miss Dad
- 12:10had so many sherbets last night that he was spewing over the
- 12:14deck rail when I got home, thought, yeah, I'm friends with
- 12:18that parent. I know what they were doing that
- 12:21night. Hi guys.
- 12:25But of course you don't say anything.
- 12:26You just politely say when they're pick up something about
- 12:29what may have been mentioned at class today or you get the my
- 12:35mom says that if the power bill goes up again, we're moving to
- 12:37Nana's. Thank you for that economic
- 12:40update, sweetie. I'm pretty sure we're nearly all
- 12:43in the same boat there. But you get them those little
- 12:47gems that we've all heard. Here's a few that some have.
- 12:54People have shared with me before too.
- 12:56When you're talking in the staff room like these little moments
- 12:58like stop sniffing the whiteboard marker.
- 13:01No, calculators do not go in mouths.
- 13:05Who stapled their sleeve to the display board?
- 13:08If you're bleeding, you do in fact need a band aid, not a
- 13:12sticker. A sticker is not a band aid.
- 13:15And you licking off your blood is gross.
- 13:19Homework isn't optional because Mercury is in retrograde.
- 13:24This was funny. This one was mentioned to me by
- 13:26a high school teacher because they had sent some work home and
- 13:30their parent had literally written a letter about the
- 13:33planets and how they weren't aligning so the homework was not
- 13:36completed. Nice try, nice try.
- 13:40We all try. Then, just to add to my high
- 13:45school experience, I think one of the hardest things that I had
- 13:48to deal with in that space was uniform because we had to wear
- 13:53uniform. It was like uniform protest. 101
- 13:56miss. Do I have to tuck in my shirt?
- 13:58This is microaggression. I feel like you're doing things
- 14:02to manipulate my brain by making me tuck in my shirt.
- 14:07Wow, that's just not even a thing.
- 14:11Sometimes I just look and go. I have no clue what you just
- 14:14said to me. I just smile and nod.
- 14:17Oh it's the uniform policy mate, sorry.
- 14:19And walk away. I was teaching one class and I
- 14:24was wearing like a leopard print blousey type thing and I got
- 14:28told, oh, that leopard print just gaslights the vibe in this
- 14:32room. Really.
- 14:35I don't know what, what do you kids come out with?
- 14:39Like what? Oh yeah your sneak is a slap for
- 14:43an old person. Oh thanks.
- 14:45Oh those earrings are TikTok call grandma.
- 14:48I love it. Is that a compliment or an
- 14:51insult because I have no clue. I get so lost.
- 14:54I think I just started writing things down to make it make
- 14:57sense or to ask chat GTP later. Like what?
- 15:00What is GAT? Please don't go Google that.
- 15:04I know what it is now, but it's those things where I was too
- 15:07embarrassed to be like, I don't know what that is.
- 15:10And I'm not going to. I'm just going to nod and
- 15:12pretend and be like, no, that's not OK.
- 15:14I was right to to know that it wasn't OK.
- 15:18But yeah, you sometimes you just need to be on TikTok to know
- 15:22what the high school kids are actually going to be talking
- 15:24about to make it make sense. Yep, That's just my advice
- 15:29there. Here's the last little bit rapid
- 15:33fire of things I thought I'd never say.
- 15:36Please remove the Lego from your nostril.
- 15:39We don't eat glitter. It exits looking the same.
- 15:43Stop air guitaring with my metre ruler.
- 15:47No, your Chromebook cannot marry her Chromebook.
- 15:52No, you can't vape essential oils at lunchtime and you can't
- 15:57vape at all. And yes, I can see you vaping
- 16:00under your shirt. What else would you have under
- 16:03there that then has little puffs of smoke coming out of your
- 16:06mouth after? Honestly.
- 16:09So how do you cope without losing your mind?
- 16:12You gotta laugh about it. That's why I thought I'd do this
- 16:15little mini episode to just give you a bit of a laugh.
- 16:19You might have some amazing laughable experiences or quotes
- 16:24that you'd like to share, so please feel free to send them in
- 16:28to me. I'd love to know what types of
- 16:30things you've encountered. As I said, I have a bit of a
- 16:33humour journal journal where I write down some of those
- 16:37ridiculous quotes because they do become comedy gold later.
- 16:41Sometimes you might need to take a deep breath and have a drink
- 16:44of water. I don't recommend doing them at
- 16:46the same time, nor do I recommend trying to have a drink
- 16:49of water when you're trying to hold back a laugh because it
- 16:52doesn't work well when it comes out your nose.
- 16:54Yep, again, speaking from experience.
- 16:56Share some of those little gems with your colleagues because
- 17:00laughter in the staff room is just free therapy.
- 17:03Maybe don't name everyone up though.
- 17:06And boundaries. Again, we've talked about
- 17:10boundaries before, but this one's for your kids in your
- 17:12class. Sometimes you need to set
- 17:14boundaries and say things like that sounds like a question for
- 17:18your Grown Ups at home. Then times that by 100 you can
- 17:23celebrate curiosity, even if it is ill timed.
- 17:26Curiosity about things like drag, strip, hair or words that
- 17:30you don't know the meaning of. But teachers and parents are
- 17:33like, I know you've got your own gems.
- 17:36I want them. So send them to me in Adm on
- 17:39Insta. Drop me a voice note.
- 17:41We can compile a Kids Say the Darnest Thing Classroom edition
- 17:45for a future episode maybe. But I hope it gave you a little
- 17:48bit of a laugh. This is certainly not all of the
- 17:51things that I have heard. These are just a few little ones
- 17:54that have happened to me and maybe my mom over the few few
- 17:58many I should say many years now of teaching.
- 18:03Please make sure you share it with a teacher mate who might
- 18:05need a smile. You can also I was going to say
- 18:10you can see pictures of my curtain rail wardrobe.
- 18:13If you want I could post them. I can post them on Instagram if
- 18:19you're interested. Please just let me know.
- 18:21Otherwise you I think you get the idea.
- 18:23The same as you can now picture my Batman brows, my angry bird
- 18:27eyebrows. No, they are nowhere near as
- 18:30dark as what they were. But I do have to get them topped
- 18:32up again. So I just make sure I plan that
- 18:34for summer when I'm not seeing millions of students.
- 18:37So remember, we might not be the only profession where we don't
- 18:42eat the glue and that is just a constant part of our dialogue.
- 18:47But that is also something that makes us legends.
- 18:50So I'll catch you next time. Legends stay aligned, keep
- 18:53thriving, and keep embracing the weird, especially those precious
- 18:59little Nuggets of gold. Talk to you next time.
