- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is a Grammy and Billboard Award winning artists.
- 0:04Speaker 1: She is also a Southern girl, a business woman who
- 0:08Speaker 1: wears many minute hats. She's the most stream gospel artist
- 0:13Speaker 1: in history and had the top selling gospel album of anden.
- 0:18Speaker 1: She promotes her own tours, which I love to hear.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We got to talk about that always being intentional and
- 0:24Speaker 1: showing her platform and sharing her platform with others. She
- 0:27Speaker 1: has over one million Instagram followers and over one hundred
- 0:30Speaker 1: million streams of her performances. Please welk up the money
- 0:34Speaker 1: making conversation, Tasha called Leonard, Hey, that's a lot of lot.
- 0:42Speaker 1: That's a lot. That's a lot. Why First of all,
- 0:52Speaker 1: it is honored for me because of the fact that
- 0:54Speaker 1: you're gonna share information to my listeners and on and
- 0:57Speaker 1: the people who view me on my Facebook page about
- 1:01Speaker 1: why it's important to be a businesswoman as well as
- 1:05Speaker 1: a talent. Because a lot of people, I think the
- 1:07Speaker 1: really uh that old you know statement that you know,
- 1:10Speaker 1: we're just in here for the art has changed. We're
- 1:13Speaker 1: in here for the business and the art. Yeah, and
- 1:16Speaker 1: it has social media changed that or it was just
- 1:20Speaker 1: always there, but social media just helped to get there faster.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You know what, I I believe both. I believe it
- 1:27Speaker 1: was always there. I've always been. My brother used to
- 1:30Speaker 1: have his own going joke when I was I was
- 1:32Speaker 1: very young, and he would saying, you are the richest
- 1:36Speaker 1: person I've ever seen with no job. But I always
- 1:40Speaker 1: found a way, even when I was younger, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 1: to to make a means for myself outside of what
- 1:46Speaker 1: my parents provided. I felt that it was very important, um,
- 1:51Speaker 1: that I do something to provide for myself. And it
- 1:55Speaker 1: started at a very young age. But I will say this,
- 1:58Speaker 1: um with social media. Uh, back when I released my
- 2:01Speaker 1: first independent project that a lot of people still asked
- 2:05Speaker 1: about to this day. Honestly, you know, I did it all.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I I started my own website, I put my own
- 2:12Speaker 1: record on tune Core. You know, I did all of
- 2:16Speaker 1: the groundwork and I will forever um respect those days.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I believe that I am able to do what I
- 2:23Speaker 1: do now because I did the groundwork then. And so
- 2:27Speaker 1: I put that album out on my face. At the time,
- 2:31Speaker 1: it was my Space, YouTube and iTunes, and that album
- 2:36Speaker 1: just really blew my mind. I didn't think so many
- 2:38Speaker 1: people would respond, and so honestly, yes, it's it's dual.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I am. I've always had like this entreprepreneurs thing on me,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but also social media helped me to push and to
- 2:49Speaker 1: market my brand. It's really interesting because a lot of
- 2:53Speaker 1: people used to worry a blessing us faith or going
- 2:57Speaker 1: out on faith, but it's also effort and also believe
- 3:01Speaker 1: it in yourself and this is your vision because a
- 3:05Speaker 1: lot of people can tell you you're wasting your time.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And I know I've heard that a lot of my career.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And I'm sure if people have told you you looked
- 3:12Speaker 1: this way, nothing's gonna happen for you. You talked this way,
- 3:15Speaker 1: nothing's gonna happen for you. And why you put that
- 3:17Speaker 1: on my space? Don't nobody know you? Don'tbody know you?
- 3:22Speaker 1: And so and so? This isn't it amazing that you
- 3:25Speaker 1: you you put your music, you're not known artists and
- 3:28Speaker 1: hustle got it out there called on favors? And what
- 3:33Speaker 1: did happen when you start seeing the views the plays?
- 3:36Speaker 1: What was that? What was running through your mind when
- 3:38Speaker 1: that was happening? You know what? And I think I
- 3:42Speaker 1: have to go back to something you said, because that
- 3:44Speaker 1: is so true about having faith. Yes, we have faith
- 3:47Speaker 1: for the Bible also said that faith without work is dead.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You can't have faith all day, but if you don't
- 3:53Speaker 1: get up and do something, it's um. So I appreciate
- 3:58Speaker 1: you for saying that. But when I started seeing more
- 4:02Speaker 1: and more people purchased the album, be interested in the
- 4:05Speaker 1: album post about the album, it actually gave me more
- 4:08Speaker 1: courage to do more. You know, when I started seeing
- 4:12Speaker 1: people and how they were being blessed by what they
- 4:15Speaker 1: heard or you know, what they saw from me, it
- 4:18Speaker 1: gave me all of the ammunition I needed to say, Oh,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I need to get up and do a little bit more.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Because I'm the kind of person you know, when I
- 4:25Speaker 1: read that scripture that says faith with our works is dead.
- 4:28Speaker 1: To me, that says get up and do something. So
- 4:30Speaker 1: the more I see the faith working for me, the
- 4:33Speaker 1: more I want to do. That's the kind of person
- 4:35Speaker 1: I am. So I you know, they used to say
- 4:38Speaker 1: this thing in church back in the day, Um, you
- 4:41Speaker 1: take one step of God to take two. So I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: always about taking that first step and letting him do
- 4:46Speaker 1: what he does, you know, after he sees me operating
- 4:49Speaker 1: my faith. So that's just the way I think. So
- 4:51Speaker 1: my response to people um being blessed by my album
- 4:55Speaker 1: at first when it was it gave me all that
- 4:58Speaker 1: I needed to keep doing more. And I think that's
- 5:01Speaker 1: important for you to say that, because I always tell
- 5:03Speaker 1: people that. First of all, you're absolutely correct when you
- 5:05Speaker 1: say by doing it yourself, you understand how far you're
- 5:10Speaker 1: willing to push yourselves and also how far you wanted
- 5:12Speaker 1: to challenge the people who say they want to do
- 5:15Speaker 1: the same thing for you. You know what I'm saying,
- 5:17Speaker 1: because you have to get out the way personality. Excuse me,
- 5:22Speaker 1: I do that, don't worry about it. That's how fairst
- 5:24Speaker 1: you're gonna move. That's how fairst you're gonna move. Okay,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I got this, I got this, I got this. And
- 5:29Speaker 1: that's important because it gives you the confidence to say,
- 5:32Speaker 1: I know how this is the how this is done.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I know how much effort needs to be put in
- 5:36Speaker 1: it for me to be happy. Now, if you're not
- 5:39Speaker 1: gonna put effort in to make me happy, that means
- 5:41Speaker 1: that you satisfy, and you reach your satisfied, satisfying point
- 5:45Speaker 1: in your life, then guess what I'm done with you.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Somebody that's coming in the room, because that allows that
- 5:52Speaker 1: that business had of yours to come on board. And
- 5:54Speaker 1: I let me tell you some I always admire people
- 5:58Speaker 1: like you who who get it at such an early age,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know. And I admit that I am talented. I
- 6:04Speaker 1: will admit that I see things uniquely, uh do a
- 6:08Speaker 1: unique mirror or glass or a window, and and and
- 6:12Speaker 1: I'm able to figure out things a lot faster than
- 6:15Speaker 1: most people. But I didn't understand who I was an
- 6:19Speaker 1: early age. I just knew people just people just told
- 6:22Speaker 1: me I was talented. And people just told me that, hey,
- 6:25Speaker 1: stop doing that, You're gonna be better than that. Stop that,
- 6:27Speaker 1: stop being stupid, stop that. You know you're gonna be
- 6:30Speaker 1: better than People just protected me and told me just
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know, it just kept me in live and then
- 6:37Speaker 1: but your brother said, hey, he knew you, he knew
- 6:41Speaker 1: you had a passion to be different. Absolutely, who pushed you? What? Well?
- 6:46Speaker 1: Under this? I know it's all starts with the parents,
- 6:48Speaker 1: But did you see something where you're inspired by something? What?
- 6:52Speaker 1: What drove you? Wow? I actually came from a family
- 6:57Speaker 1: of just ambitious people. You know, they're very talented. My
- 7:01Speaker 1: entire family things that play instruments. You know, they're education educators.
- 7:06Speaker 1: They believe in education. And doing what you're calling to do.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So I had a family. It's good to have a
- 7:13Speaker 1: family unit of people, and then that doesn't necessarily have
- 7:16Speaker 1: to be blood. But surrounds tell people all the time,
- 7:19Speaker 1: surround your people, yourself around people. Some of them may
- 7:23Speaker 1: know who you are before you know who you are.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And I always want to surround my people, myself around
- 7:28Speaker 1: people who know more than me. If somebody told me
- 7:31Speaker 1: the other day, if if you know the most in
- 7:34Speaker 1: your circle of friends, and you need to get some
- 7:36Speaker 1: new friends, because you have to have people in your
- 7:39Speaker 1: life who are always sharpen thing you, always pushing you
- 7:42Speaker 1: to be greater, always stretching you to do more. And
- 7:44Speaker 1: if you don't have that person in your life, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you kind of hit a glass ceiling where where nobody
- 7:50Speaker 1: is stretching you, nobody's telling you, you know, you gotta
- 7:52Speaker 1: be You gotta have those people in your life who
- 7:54Speaker 1: aren't always telling you you're great, who aren't always saying
- 7:57Speaker 1: you're the best of the best, telling you that you
- 7:59Speaker 1: know need to work on that, or you need to
- 8:01Speaker 1: work on this. I am always very intentional about surround up,
- 8:04Speaker 1: surrounding myself around those seaports, and I love it. I
- 8:07Speaker 1: love it, Tasha. We're gonna go to the next break
- 8:09Speaker 1: and we can come back. UM, keep that energy because
- 8:12Speaker 1: you were right where I want you to. And we
- 8:14Speaker 1: talk about the eye airline, the athletic, wereline, even more
- 8:17Speaker 1: about your ability to be because brand yourself social, social wise.
- 8:24Speaker 1: This was Sean McDonald's was Sean McDonald, the host of
- 8:27Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation. UM, continue this interview with the Grammy
- 8:31Speaker 1: and the bill Board Award and winning an artist. She's
- 8:33Speaker 1: a businesswoman and I wanted to talk about that. We
- 8:36Speaker 1: talked about the first break was really talking about, um,
- 8:38Speaker 1: just the social side of branding, finding their abilities and
- 8:42Speaker 1: getting themselves out there at the early age and believe
- 8:45Speaker 1: it in ourselves and then working hard to make it happen.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Now we want to talk about the business side of
- 8:50Speaker 1: her that how did how did the the ability to
- 8:54Speaker 1: make these choices, Like a couple of things they put
- 8:56Speaker 1: into your bio to talk about was the eye wear
- 8:59Speaker 1: and the athletic Okay, let's talk about the Okay, So
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's it's uh the eye wear. It's called Fritz Eyewear,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and it's named after my father. You know, I tell
- 9:11Speaker 1: this story all the time. UM, we went through a
- 9:13Speaker 1: very visible passing of my father. Um uh. It's been
- 9:18Speaker 1: five years now, but during that time, I had just
- 9:21Speaker 1: released the song Break Every Chain, and you know, so
- 9:23Speaker 1: many eyes were on us, and he was just a
- 9:26Speaker 1: great man. You know. I have no no bad memories
- 9:30Speaker 1: and my father whatsoever. And I wanted to do something
- 9:33Speaker 1: that honored him. And I also wanted to do something
- 9:36Speaker 1: that stretched me beyond the music, you know, outside of
- 9:39Speaker 1: the four walls of the church. And it's not you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: it's not heard of a lot, but I really feel
- 9:45Speaker 1: like all of my life that it was something for
- 9:47Speaker 1: me to do in an entrepreneur aspect, and so I
- 9:51Speaker 1: just reached out. You know, I was connected to um
- 9:55Speaker 1: this group of people they have it's called the Eye
- 9:58Speaker 1: Candy Creations and they help different um different entrepreneurs to
- 10:03Speaker 1: help to launch their eyewear brands, and so I reached
- 10:06Speaker 1: out with them. I didn't have much, but I knew
- 10:09Speaker 1: I wanted to do this. And that's another thing I
- 10:11Speaker 1: want to stop right there. Always connect yourself with people
- 10:14Speaker 1: who have an understanding of an arena that you may
- 10:17Speaker 1: not have. You know, I needed to partner with them
- 10:19Speaker 1: so they can help me understand what I was launching
- 10:22Speaker 1: out into, and so I just started to have conversations
- 10:24Speaker 1: with them, telling them, you know, what it is that
- 10:27Speaker 1: I wanted to do. You know, they started giving me
- 10:29Speaker 1: understandings of different materials that I were could be made
- 10:32Speaker 1: out of. There's so much that goes into it, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: you can't just sit around and try to teach yourself.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And yes, we can google some things, but most times
- 10:40Speaker 1: you have to partner with people who have an understanding
- 10:42Speaker 1: that you don't have so that they can teach you
- 10:44Speaker 1: and train you. And so I partner with them, and
- 10:47Speaker 1: I told them about my father, and if you look
- 10:49Speaker 1: at any of the eyewear, you can kind of see
- 10:51Speaker 1: glimpses of his personality within each of them. He used
- 10:55Speaker 1: to end all of our church services by saying, love everybody.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And one of the things that I always do and this,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and this is the honest truth. We pray over every
- 11:04Speaker 1: pair of the eye wear, and I prayed that people
- 11:07Speaker 1: will see other people through the lens of my father,
- 11:10Speaker 1: which is the lens of love. And so, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I believe it's absolutely possible to infuse the God that
- 11:17Speaker 1: I served within my businesses. You know, I believe it's
- 11:21Speaker 1: possible to tie in the two, and so that's what
- 11:24Speaker 1: I did with Fritz iware and we have the first
- 11:26Speaker 1: collection which we completely sold out of it. Again, mind blowing.
- 11:31Speaker 1: You know, I'm pushing it, I'm stepping out there. I'm
- 11:33Speaker 1: walking on faith, but I'm also walking you know, and
- 11:36Speaker 1: it's just, you know, it's just blew my mind to
- 11:39Speaker 1: people's responses and this eye where you know, you could
- 11:42Speaker 1: put your prescription in them. I made sure that it
- 11:45Speaker 1: was top of the line. I only believe in the best,
- 11:48Speaker 1: the top of the line material. And it has been
- 11:52Speaker 1: back this up tosh Okay. First of all, this is
- 11:54Speaker 1: the iware line. They didn't come to you. They didn't
- 11:57Speaker 1: come to you, right, you came to Okay and so
- 12:01Speaker 1: so so Well, what has been the reaction because they
- 12:05Speaker 1: didn't come to you and they've seen this tremendous response
- 12:09Speaker 1: to your brand? M hm? Do you or do you
- 12:13Speaker 1: approach this relationship differently or you just maintain status quo
- 12:17Speaker 1: with him? Now that you realize, hey, I can dominate
- 12:20Speaker 1: this field too, or I can be a brand, I
- 12:23Speaker 1: could be an entrepreneuring this field too. How does that,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I just that affect your whole approach to business? In
- 12:27Speaker 1: that particular arena. You know what, I still believe in honor.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I believe in respect. When I when I say I'm
- 12:34Speaker 1: gonna partner with somebody, I mean that. You know, it's
- 12:38Speaker 1: you gotta be a person of your word. When you
- 12:40Speaker 1: say something you know you don't get the knowledge, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: then you go off and try to one up the
- 12:45Speaker 1: people that help you get you know. So with that company,
- 12:50Speaker 1: we are still in partnerships. You know, we still communicate.
- 12:53Speaker 1: They're still helping me to push eyewhere, I still help
- 12:57Speaker 1: to push I can be creations. That's how partnerships work.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And I think, you know, sometimes it's easy to try
- 13:04Speaker 1: to get that crab mentality, but it's better to work
- 13:07Speaker 1: hand in hand and create partnerships to help expand you know,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you can do better. We can do better together. I
- 13:12Speaker 1: don't if somebody got a song that says that, but
- 13:15Speaker 1: it's the truth. We can do better together. Sometimes when
- 13:17Speaker 1: you're trying to break ground and when when you're trying
- 13:19Speaker 1: to do something different, it's good to partner with people
- 13:22Speaker 1: who are also trying to do the same thing, and
- 13:25Speaker 1: each of you respect each other mutually. It works and
- 13:28Speaker 1: there's a mutual respect there that I just absolutely loved
- 13:32Speaker 1: with our candy creation. So we're working on our next collection,
- 13:35Speaker 1: which I am so excited about. This is gonna be
- 13:37Speaker 1: crazy because you're funny to me, because you're you are
- 13:41Speaker 1: a business woman. If you didn't do gospel music, you
- 13:44Speaker 1: you're somewhere, You're gonna be somewhere successful. You always shut
- 13:48Speaker 1: it down. This is what I think. You know, I
- 13:51Speaker 1: don't care if it IBM real estate. Uh broken, you
- 13:55Speaker 1: gotta do because you you got that, you got a
- 13:57Speaker 1: sense of the work ethic, you know. And then and
- 14:00Speaker 1: then I also you understand relationships. You also understand that
- 14:04Speaker 1: I will not walk into the room and be the
- 14:05Speaker 1: smartest person by something I don't know. Yes, correct, you
- 14:10Speaker 1: have to Sometimes you gotta learn to be quiet and listen.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You know. Sometimes we just try to talk too much
- 14:15Speaker 1: and prove how smart we are. But sometimes you need
- 14:17Speaker 1: to walk in the room and be quiet and listen.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna they used to call me, even at my labels,
- 14:22Speaker 1: they say she's like a sponge. I will sit down
- 14:24Speaker 1: and soak everything up, you know, to see how it's
- 14:27Speaker 1: gonna help me become who I'm supposed to be. But
- 14:29Speaker 1: what happened, But he said this the other day. I'm
- 14:31Speaker 1: gonna leave this or having done everything I was supposed
- 14:34Speaker 1: to do. I am. That's me right there, ras Sean
- 14:37Speaker 1: McDonald with Sean McDonald, we're gonna be right next to
- 14:40Speaker 1: each other. We're gonna be gray by gray baby, and
- 14:43Speaker 1: we're gonna say on that done at all. Both of them.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Just done it all, both of them. That's gonna be all.
- 14:50Speaker 1: That's gonna be written on all stones. Right there. Let's
- 14:52Speaker 1: talk about this next time. I got six sisters, you know,
- 14:55Speaker 1: when I'm passed away, but I'm always have six sisters.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Their look curvy, their look curvy. I'm gonna say, I
- 15:01Speaker 1: love that look curving, you know, And so you got
- 15:03Speaker 1: just live for curves. So so what, okay do you
- 15:08Speaker 1: don't know? If I gotta ask you this question to
- 15:10Speaker 1: develop an ethnic line, do you work out? I absolutely do.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I have a trainer, I sure do. I know people
- 15:18Speaker 1: don't believe big girls workout, but we can be healthy too.
- 15:21Speaker 1: That's what I'm I'm wanting to push. I want I've
- 15:24Speaker 1: seen so many curvy girls because I released this line,
- 15:28Speaker 1: they have the courage now to stand up and say, yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I work out, you know, yes, you know I do.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I eat healthy, but sometimes some of us say used
- 15:37Speaker 1: to say this back in the day, some of us
- 15:38Speaker 1: just big bone girls. Absolute. But I believe you can
- 15:42Speaker 1: be healthy. You can ask my doctor right now. I
- 15:44Speaker 1: have no health issues whatsoever. I'm a curby girl and
- 15:48Speaker 1: I believe and eating right. You know, I'm gonna eat
- 15:50Speaker 1: me a piece of cake every now and then. But
- 15:52Speaker 1: for the most part, you gotta stay with your regiment.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You gotta make sure that you're taking care of your temple.
- 15:58Speaker 1: God gave us one body, you know, He gave us
- 16:00Speaker 1: one one life to live, and I you have to
- 16:03Speaker 1: make sure you're taken care of it. And in terb athletics,
- 16:06Speaker 1: I wanted to push that. You know, the the honest
- 16:09Speaker 1: story behind this is I was online um looking for
- 16:14Speaker 1: Ivy Park, which is Beyonce's uh. She has an athletic line,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and so every at midnight she will release these collections
- 16:22Speaker 1: and they only do like a small portion of the
- 16:25Speaker 1: plus side. And so if you don't get on right
- 16:27Speaker 1: at midnight, you're gonna miss it. So every time I
- 16:29Speaker 1: was missing getting the order, and so jokingly I said,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and you know, the Bible says you have whatsoever you say,
- 16:36Speaker 1: and I said out of my mouth, I'm gonna create
- 16:39Speaker 1: my own athletic wears just like that. It was a
- 16:41Speaker 1: joke and I just threw it out there. But when
- 16:43Speaker 1: you throw things out into the atmosphere, you know, those
- 16:46Speaker 1: angels received it. And so I said it and I
- 16:48Speaker 1: could not shake it. And so about three years ago,
- 16:51Speaker 1: now this one was a little different from UM for
- 16:54Speaker 1: I Wear because I had challenges. I had hurdles with
- 16:57Speaker 1: this one because you have trademarks and you have of
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know, you have to go through manufactures. It was
- 17:02Speaker 1: just a little different for me. And so three years
- 17:05Speaker 1: ago I started out with this product. And this is
- 17:08Speaker 1: really good for some people who may want to give up.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I started out in my trademarks did not go through
- 17:13Speaker 1: because the logo that I had was too similar to
- 17:16Speaker 1: another one, and so I had to start all the
- 17:18Speaker 1: way over after printing so many labels, and so I
- 17:21Speaker 1: learned a valuable lesson from that, you know, So I
- 17:24Speaker 1: was disappointed. I sat for a little while and I
- 17:27Speaker 1: still couldn't shake it, and so I worked hard, you know,
- 17:30Speaker 1: to make sure and people will tell you now a
- 17:33Speaker 1: lot of women are getting there their products. I made
- 17:35Speaker 1: it for the curvy woman, a lot of times we
- 17:38Speaker 1: get these types. They roll down, they slide down, and
- 17:40Speaker 1: don't fit right, you can't work out. And I did
- 17:43Speaker 1: a lot of study about the plus size body and
- 17:45Speaker 1: what will fit and what type of material and fabric
- 17:48Speaker 1: to use. And so for three years, I worked hard
- 17:51Speaker 1: and I pressed, I studied, and I make sure that
- 17:54Speaker 1: these these garments would fit properly. And everybody who has
- 17:58Speaker 1: them now they're saying, oh my god, they don't fly down,
- 18:00Speaker 1: Oh my god, and that it's just blessing me because
- 18:02Speaker 1: that's what I worked so hard on to make sure
- 18:05Speaker 1: that they fit properly and that we're comfortable and we
- 18:08Speaker 1: feel great in them. And so you know, for anybody
- 18:11Speaker 1: you're out there you want to start a business, don't
- 18:14Speaker 1: give up. If you've got some hurdles that you gotta
- 18:16Speaker 1: jump over, the mountains you gotta knock down. Sometimes it's
- 18:19Speaker 1: not gonna come to you easy, but you got to
- 18:21Speaker 1: keep on working. I'm gonna tell you this, Tasha, Okay,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you need a podcast. If you don't have a podcast,
- 18:27Speaker 1: you need to get you. I'm telling you you you
