- 0:37Hello Travelers and Monster Catchers abound,
- 0:39I'm Stella Ferris and this is the Monster Catcher
- 0:42Journal Podcast. Welcome back and I hope you
- 0:45enjoy the story. But this story is not about
- 0:48shadows that lurk in the night, nor about sharp
- 0:50fangs nor feathers or fur. No. This is the story
- 0:54of something much different. The story of a vacation.
- 0:58So I didn't want to go on this vacation, but
- 1:01Orion insisted. So, here's the story. It was
- 1:06strangely hot for a September evening. My mind
- 1:09was restless, pulled toward the thought of venturing
- 1:12out into the wild to catch more glyphs. The hunt
- 1:15never really leaves me. It lingers, like an itch
- 1:19under the skin. But just as I was gathering my
- 1:21things ready to slip out into the night, Orion
- 1:24appeared in the doorway. He stood there, arms
- 1:27folded with that professor's patience he always
- 1:30wears. Though I could see the stern glint in
- 1:32his eyes, he insisted that I, along with Xena
- 1:35and Luna, join him and the rest of the class
- 1:38on a four day trip. It'll ease your mind, he
- 1:41said. And I've even got a person that can watch
- 1:47your glyphs while you're gone. I didn't believe
- 1:50it. Truthfully, I didn't want to slow down. A
- 1:52vacation felt like waste of time when there were
- 1:55so many mysteries left uncaught. So, so many
- 2:00glyphs. yet to be discovered. But Orion would
- 2:03not take no for an answer. So begrudgingly, I
- 2:06went. The ride itself was long, four hours across
- 2:11land and sea aboard, a hover bus that hummed
- 2:14like a hive of bees beneath our feet. We passed
- 2:19over, endless stretches of sparkling water and
- 2:21clusters of sky -bridges tethered to nowhere.
- 2:25Xena tried to sleep, her cheek pressed against
- 2:27the window. While Luna, she whispered stories
- 2:30to herself to keep herself entertained, I stared
- 2:34off at the horizon, wondering if any part of
- 2:37this trip could possibly be worth the time, and
- 2:40then we arrived. Before us flowed at the most
- 2:43beautiful resort I had ever seen, an entire island
- 2:46suspended in the sky, its edges dripping with
- 2:49waterfalls that poured down into the ocean far,
- 2:52far below. Great towers of glass and crystal
- 2:56rose from its surface, shimmering with the reflection
- 3:00of sunlight and wings of passing glyphs. Exotic
- 3:03flowers spilled color over every path, and the
- 3:06air itself smelled of salt and something sweet
- 3:08like honey drifting on the wind. But all of that
- 3:12paled in comparison to what I saw next. At the
- 3:15edge of the lagoon, half hidden in the spray
- 3:17of a waterfall, was a creature I had only ever
- 3:20read about in our old records. The Moranok. A
- 3:26nearly extinct glyph, shaped like a miniature
- 3:28giraffe, but not truly flesh and bone, its body
- 3:31rippled like water, a translucent blue slime
- 3:34that glowed faintly from within, as if carrying
- 3:38a star in its core. Only ten were ever said to
- 3:43exist in the entire world, and all of them, every
- 3:46last one, were gathered here, on this resort.
- 3:50For the first time, since Orion dragged me along,
- 3:53I felt my pulse quicken. Maybe this vacation
- 3:56wasn't going to be a waste of time after all.
- 4:01As we stepped off the hover bus, the warm air
- 4:04hit me like a wave, thick with salt, and the
- 4:07faint tum of wings from the glyphs drifting above
- 4:09my boots touched the crystal -like pathway, and
- 4:12I barely noticed the chatter of my classmates,
- 4:15or the way Xena stretched her arms after the
- 4:18long ride, my attention was fixed ahead. There
- 4:21it was again. The Mornog. It simmered, just a
- 4:26few yards away at the edge of the lagoon, the
- 4:29sunlight slipping through its translucent body
- 4:32so that it glowed like a jewel. Its long, elongated
- 4:35neck swayed as it bent down to sip from the water,
- 4:39droplets sliding down its gelatinous skin and
- 4:44breaking into the rainbows. Every moment was
- 4:48slow, deliberate, almost otherworldly. I couldn't
- 4:51help myself. My feet carried me forward, step
- 4:53by step. drawn as if by a spell. I was only a
- 4:58breath away when a figure moved sharply into
- 5:01my path. A uniform resort guard, his expression
- 5:05stern, planted himself between me and the creature,
- 5:09his hand rested firmly on the baton at his belt,
- 5:12though his tone carried more warning than threat.
- 5:15Do not touch the moronog, he said, his voice
- 5:18steady but edged with caution. They are not to
- 5:22be caught. not even approached too closely. There
- 5:25were only ten left in existence. I froze, caught
- 5:28between frustration and awe. Ten left, I had
- 5:31known that from the stories from the record Orion
- 5:34once showed me, but hearing it spoken aloud,
- 5:37seeing the living proof standing right behind
- 5:39him, made the words feel heavier. The guard continued
- 5:45as, gaze -shifting briefly toward the lagoon
- 5:48where the creature shimmered like a mirage, They
- 5:51were nearly wiped out, defoured long ago by the
- 5:54Ignizura. To them, the Moronog were nothing more
- 5:59than food. What you see here are the last survivors
- 6:02protected under strict law. This resort is the
- 6:06only place they remain. His words hung in the
- 6:10air like a verdict. Behind him, the little glyph
- 6:14lifted its head, eyes like drops of - starlight,
- 6:19meeting mine for the brief instant. My heart
- 6:23thudded, torn between the hunter's instinct that
- 6:26urged me forward and the weight of responsibility
- 6:30pressing me back. I swallowed hard, nodding.
- 6:33I wasn't going to hurt it, I said, though the
- 6:35guard didn't move from his place. The Morinog
- 6:38shifted, rippling in the sunlight, and for the
- 6:42moment I wondered if it sensed what I felt, that
- 6:46strange mixture of longing, reverence, and sorrow.
- 6:53I was about to turn away, disappointment curling
- 6:55in my chest, when I felt it, something wet, cold,
- 6:59and strangely sticky pressing against my hand.
- 7:02I froze. The sensation was unlike anything I've
- 7:04ever felt before, like dipping my fingers into
- 7:07a bowl of warm jelly that somehow pulsed with
- 7:11life. Slowly, I tilted my head down, afraid to
- 7:14move too quickly and scare it away. There he
- 7:17was. The Moronog. The little blue glyph had slithered
- 7:24right up to me, its translucent body glowing
- 7:27faintly under the sun, with its long jelly -like
- 7:30neck and nuzzled against my palm in a gesture
- 7:33so familiar, so strangely affectionate, that
- 7:37I forgot to breathe. Its head left trails of
- 7:41slime across my skin, but I didn't pull away,
- 7:43I couldn't. My heart was pounding too hard, my
- 7:46mind caught between disbelief and wonder. When
- 7:49I finally looked at my gaze, I saw the guard
- 7:51staring at us, his brows shot upward, his mouth
- 7:55slightly ajar in stunned silence, he blinked
- 7:57as if unsure his own eyes could be trusted. The
- 8:02monarch— Sorry, sorry, sorry. I didn't mean to
- 8:07mess up my words, but the moronog have never,
- 8:11his voice caught, then steadied, though it carried
- 8:14a note of awe. They have never acted like that
- 8:16before. He's studied me, then glanced back at
- 8:20the creature still clinging to my hand like a
- 8:22lost child. You must have a real knack for whatever
- 8:25it is you do. This little guy, he loves you.
- 8:32Even the lagoon seemed to go quiet, the other
- 8:35guards shifted uncomfortably as though unsure
- 8:38whether to intervene, while my classmates whispered
- 8:40among themselves, but the first guard only shook
- 8:43his head in amazement. And, stepped back into
- 8:46place, his tone grew firm again, returning to
- 8:49duty though his eyes still betrayed his astonishment.
- 8:53Just don't push your luck. You're under their
- 8:56protection now, not the other way around. And
- 8:59with that, He resumed his post, leaving me standing
- 9:03there, hands slick with glowing slime as the
- 9:06Moronog leaned against me like we had known each
- 9:10other all along. Don't get me wrong, I really
- 9:16loved that the Moronog took to me so well and
- 9:20that they loved me, but everywhere I went They
- 9:22followed. At first it was just the one, the little
- 9:25slime -necked giraffe who decided my hand was
- 9:28its new pillow, but before long it became clear
- 9:31I had a shadow I couldn't shake. I tried to ignore
- 9:33it. I slipped into my swimsuit, grabbed a towel,
- 9:36and stretched out on a lounge chair near the
- 9:40pool. The sun was warm, the water sparkling like
- 9:43crystal. It should have been the perfect moment
- 9:45to relax, but then splat! A cool sticky weight
- 9:49landed across my face. Blue glue. I keep saying
- 9:52glue, but it's not glue, it's goo, slid down
- 9:54my cheek, dripping onto my towel. I peeled it
- 9:58off, only to find two bright little starry eyes
- 10:02staring back at me, the moronog gurgling heavily
- 10:05as it smeared slime like a child finger painting.
- 10:09I groaned. Really? Fine, if I wanted to swim,
- 10:12maybe I could lose it in the water. I stood marching
- 10:16to the pool and dove in with a splash. The cool
- 10:19rush of water was refreshing for all of two seconds,
- 10:23until the glow followed me under. Like some strange,
- 10:30gladness comet, the moronog dove in after me,
- 10:34wobbling and wriggling in the water with an excitement
- 10:37that sent trails of bubbles dancing to the surface.
- 10:40I kicked away, but no matter where I turned,
- 10:43it stuck to me like glue. By the time I climbed
- 10:46out, my skin shimmered with blue streaks. Finally,
- 10:50exasperated, I trudged back to the hotel room.
- 10:53The hall was quiet, the door a welcome sight.
- 10:57Maybe I could shut the world out, just for a
- 10:59little while. But when I turned the corner, my
- 11:02heart sank. They were waiting. Not one, not two,
- 11:06all ten. Ten glowing, jelly -bodied moronog lined
- 11:11the corridor outside my door. Their next bobbing
- 11:16eyes gleaming like little lanterns in the dim
- 11:18light, a chorus of wet gurgles rose as they spotted
- 11:21me, and the first one, the original culprit,
- 11:24slid forward expectantly, as though proud of
- 11:27what it had done. I pressed the key card to the
- 11:31door with a sigh, some kind of vacation, I muttered
- 11:34sarcastically, stepping inside, one of them decided
- 11:37to slime me again, and of course, when the door
- 11:40closed, I could still hear their squishy bodies
- 11:43plopping against the wall. Waiting. Always waiting.
- 11:50What was I thinking? Orion had given each of
- 11:53us a holographic phone for emergencies. Sure,
- 11:56I didn't want to involve Orion in my problems,
- 11:59but at this point I felt like it was necessary
- 12:02to call Orion. So, I did. And if 10's slimy...
- 12:12Endangered glyphs following me around wasn't
- 12:15an emergency, then I didn't know it was. I yanked
- 12:17the dove eyes from my bag, flicked it open, and
- 12:20pressed the dial. With a soft hum, a miniature
- 12:23holographic Orion shimmered into existence above
- 12:25the phone. He stood there, arms crossed, his
- 12:28image flickering with the faint blue glow of
- 12:31projection. What is it, Quasar? Orion asked,
- 12:35his voice carrying that patient professor's edge.
- 12:39Like he already knew. This was going to be trivial.
- 12:43I can't enjoy this trip. I blurt it, pacing the
- 12:45room as the squishy sounds of Morynog echoed
- 12:50faintly from the hall. The Morynog keep following
- 12:52me everywhere. Orion arched a brow. Oh, come
- 12:57now, Quasar. It's only one little Morynog. I'm
- 13:01sure you can handle it. I spun towards the door,
- 13:04yanking it open with a dramatic sweep. Instantly,
- 13:07ten glowing heads swiveled toward me. Necks wobbling
- 13:11like slimy periscopes, their starlit eyes blinked
- 13:16in unison. Started as one, I said though through
- 13:21gritted teeth. Now it's all ten, my voice cracked
- 13:24as I held the phone up so Orion could see the
- 13:27squishy army lined up outside my door, and do
- 13:32you even realize what this means? If they stay
- 13:34out of the water too long, they can dry out and
- 13:37die. Please, Orion, help. The holographic Orion
- 13:42blinked, his expression flickering from annoyance
- 13:44to something closer to concern. He rubbed his
- 13:47chin thoughtfully, the projection glitching as
- 13:52he shifted. Well, he began slowly. That is unexpected.
- 13:57Unexpected, I cried, throwing my arms in the
- 13:59air as another blob of goo splattered against
- 14:03my door frame from an overly eager Moronog. I'm
- 14:07being haunted by endangered slime giraffes, Auron.
- 14:11If they turn into little blue raisins on my watch,
- 14:16it's going to be my fault. And I'll be in trouble.
- 14:19Don't worry, Quasar. I'll alert the resort staff
- 14:23and have them collect the moronog. Auron assured
- 14:26me. His hologram flickered once, twice, and then
- 14:30vanished into the air. I sank onto the bed, wiping
- 14:33the last of the slime from my hand. Relief was
- 14:36finally beginning to set in. What when I heard
- 14:39it? The rhythmic echo of boots in the hallway.
- 14:43A knock sounded at the door. When I opened it,
- 14:45four figures stood before me. They weren't dressed
- 14:48like resort staff at all. Instead, they wore
- 14:51sleek dark uniforms stitched with silver lines
- 14:53that glittered like starlight. Each outfit bore
- 14:57the same emblem, a consolation burning bright
- 14:59across their chest. Their eyes gleamed with confidence.
- 15:05A confidence that felt too polished, too rehearsed.
- 15:09And then in perfect unison, they struck a pose
- 15:11and began to chant. I'm Altair, soaring brighter
- 15:15than the night, a blazing hawk with wings of
- 15:17light. I'm Lyra, music sharp as a blade, a song
- 15:21of shadow where legends are made. I'm Vega, burning
- 15:24fierce, a radiant flame, catch my spark and remember
- 15:27the name. I'm Regal, strength that shakes the
- 15:31sky. A giant of stars with fire in my eyes. Together
- 15:36we shine, together we fight. We steal your glyphs
- 15:40and vanish from sight. We are Team Constellation.
- 15:45Brighter than the rest, so hand over your glyphs.
- 15:48We'll put you to the test. They held their final
- 15:51poses, hands outstretched dramatically at the
- 15:54corridor lights catching on their uniform, so
- 15:57they shimmered like falling stars. My stomach
- 16:00dropped. These weren't staff. They weren't here
- 16:02to protect the Morinog. They were glyph thieves.
- 16:07I know you're not staff, I said firmly, stepping
- 16:09between the Morinog and the glittering uniforms
- 16:12of Teen Constellation. My voice carried more
- 16:15still than I felt, but I refused to waver, and
- 16:19I won't allow you to steal these glyphs. Altair
- 16:23tilted his head back and laughed, the sound sharp
- 16:25and mocking his silver -feathered cape. shimmering
- 16:29under the hall light as he leaned forward, smirk,
- 16:34cutting across his face. Oh, and who's going
- 16:36to stop us, he taunted. I squared my shoulders,
- 16:40meeting his gaze without flinching. I will. I
- 16:44were chuckled, strumming the strings of her jeweled
- 16:47weapon like it was a harp. You, alone? Don't
- 16:51make me laugh. Regal stepped forward, his boots
- 16:54thudding against the floor. muscle straining
- 16:56under his star -edged uniform. You and what army,
- 17:01he snared, eyes glowing faintly like embers.
- 17:05The air grew thick with tension, the moronog
- 17:07huddling close behind me, their slimy forms trembling.
- 17:11My heart pounded for a moment, I thought they
- 17:13might be right, that I was standing alone, and
- 17:16then footsteps heavy, hurried, echoing down the
- 17:19corridor. Four resort staff rounded the corner.
- 17:24their uniforms gleaming with constellation emblems,
- 17:27but these ones, real, authentic. With glowing
- 17:30security badges, the guard from earlier, the
- 17:33one who'd stopped me from touching the moronog,
- 17:38charged at their side. His baton crackled with
- 17:43electric light as he shouted, step away from
- 17:46the guest and protect it glyphs now. The color
- 17:51drained from Vega's face, her fire dimmed for
- 17:54a heartbeat. Lyra faltered mid -strom, her smirk
- 17:57slipping. Altair, though only narrowed his eyes,
- 18:02a dangerous grin spreading across his face. Well,
- 18:06well, looks like the stars have given us an audience.
- 18:11The corridor filled with the sound of boots buzzing
- 18:13weapons and the nervous gurgles of 10 -rare moronog.
- 18:18It was about to explode into chaos. Before the
- 18:23staff could reach them, Team Constellation acted
- 18:26fast with a synchronized flick. They threw a
- 18:29shimmering net over the tin moronog, their glowing
- 18:33bodies squirming as they were trapped like stars
- 18:37in a jar. Get him! Altair shouted, dragging the
- 18:41net towards the corridor's exit. Lyra, Vega,
- 18:44and Regal followed their confident laughter.
- 18:47echoing down the hallway. A hot air balloon was
- 18:50waiting outside, outrageously oversized, emblazoned
- 18:56with constellations just like their uniforms.
- 18:59They clambered in, wore a noggin toe, and out
- 19:05air, cut the ropes, but they didn't get far.
- 19:09I called out Aura Beak, my golden scarab with
- 19:11a comically duck -like beak. His tiny wings shimmered
- 19:14as he pulled himself up, tilting his head with
- 19:17that familiar gleam in his insectoid eyes. Then,
- 19:22with an ear -piercing high -pitched screech,
- 19:24he let out a sound that reverberated like a sonic
- 19:27horn. The balloon shook violently, stretching
- 19:30and popped. It exploded in a glittering burst
- 19:33of canvas and rope. The moronog tumbled safely
- 19:37into a soft bush, blinking up at me as if nothing
- 19:41had happened. Team Constellation, however, did
- 19:44not fare as well. Their balloon remnants caught
- 19:48the wind and hoisted them skyward like a constellation
- 19:51of flailing puppets. Altair flowed, Vega screamed,
- 19:56and Lyra spun helplessly, and Regal grabbed on
- 19:59the ropes in a vain. From above, they shouted
- 20:02desperation in their voice. Well, we'll orbit
- 20:07back another day. Keep your eyes on the stars.
- 20:11I couldn't help laughing as Urabeek waddled profoundly,
- 20:15feathers, well, carapace, glinting like he'd
- 20:21just saved the day. The moronog gurgled happily,
- 20:24tells wiggling in gratitude, and I realized that
- 20:27my vacation had once again turned into something
- 20:30entirely unexpected, but at least we had won.
- 20:35The rest of my vacation was spent getting to
- 20:37know the moronog. watching them wiggle through
- 20:39the water, laughing at their playful little squelches,
- 20:44and learning the unique personalities of each
- 20:47of the ten survivors. I never did manage to relax
- 20:52in the way most people might on a floating island
- 20:55resort, but in a way I didn't mind, every moment
- 20:58was filled with discovery, laughter, and a little
- 21:01chaos just the way I liked it. And that, listeners,
- 21:04is my vacation, not one of calm beaches or cocktails,
- 21:09but one full of rare glyphs, sticky blue goo,
- 21:13a heroic golden scarab, and a team of thieves
- 21:15who got a very cosmic comeuppance. Some vacations
- 21:21you take for yourself, some vacations will find
- 21:24you, and leave you with memories you'll never
- 21:27forget. That, my friends, is this episode's final
- 21:37countdown. I will see you next time, and may
- 21:40the stars of Nibiru, the suns and the moons,
- 21:44shine their beautiful light down on you. And
- 21:48as always, stay brave, stay cool. Bye now.
