- 0:00Welcome to five minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament in each episode we take just a few minutes to focus
- 0:06on one chapter of the New Testament, exploring the truths
- 0:10God is teaching us through his word and expanding our view of
- 0:13who. He is.
- 0:14Before you listen, make sure you've gone straight to the
- 0:17source, either by reading today's chapter of the Bible
- 0:20yourself or listening to today's read along episode in this
- 0:23podcast feed. If you haven't done that yet,
- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28And when you're ready, let's dive into God's Word together.
- 0:43In Acts chapter 15, we see that as the Kingdom advances to the
- 0:47Gentiles. There's discord.
- 0:49Specifically, some Jews want to require Gentiles to follow the
- 0:52ceremonial law of the Jews, in other words, to become Jews in
- 0:57order to become Christians. Paul and Barnabas disagree and
- 1:00ask for input from the apostles at the church in Jerusalem.
- 1:03The response serves as a powerful template for making
- 1:06peace and for walking in unity with our brothers and sisters.
- 1:09Listen to that letter from the church at Jerusalem, written as
- 1:12a response, the apostles and the brethren who are elders to the
- 1:15brethren in Antioch, in Syria and Cilicia, who are from the
- 1:19Gentiles. Greetings.
- 1:21Since we have heard that some of our number, to whom we gave no
- 1:23instruction, have disturbed you with their words, unsettling
- 1:27your souls, it seemed good to us, having become of one mind,
- 1:31to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and
- 1:33Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord
- 1:36Jesus Christ. Therefore we have sent Judas and
- 1:39Silas, who themselves will also report the same things by word
- 1:43of mouth. For it seemed good to the Holy
- 1:45Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these
- 1:48essentials, that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols,
- 1:51and from blood, and from things strangled and from fornication.
- 1:55If you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well.
- 1:58Farewell. In other words, for the sake of
- 2:01your Jewish brothers, adhere to a few specific guidelines, but
- 2:05on the whole, let the main thing be the main thing.
- 2:08Follow Christ. A German Lutheran theologian
- 2:11named Rupertus Meldinius wrote this in the 1620s.
- 2:15In essentials unity, in non essentials liberty, in all
- 2:19things charity. That's it.
- 2:22That's the message to these 1st century believers.
- 2:25And that is the message that we as the church need today.
- 2:28We need to know what the non negotiables are.
- 2:31Those beliefs where there is no room for compromise, like the
- 2:34fact that we serve a triune God, the reality that Jesus was
- 2:37sinless, that he died in our place and so that we might be
- 2:41forgiven and made whole. Or the truth that he's one day
- 2:43returning to judge and to reign in essentials unity.
- 2:48And once we know those non negotiables, we must know that
- 2:51there are practices, there are beliefs that faithful Christians
- 2:55have disagreed on for centuries, not because one group is
- 2:58faithful to the Scriptures and the other isn't, but as a matter
- 3:01of interpretation. For example, we said one of the
- 3:04non negotiables is the reality that Jesus is returning to judge
- 3:07and to rule. But faithful Christians have
- 3:09long held to a handful of different orthodox beliefs about
- 3:14the order of events surrounding his return.
- 3:16There is room for. Healthy.
- 3:18Gracious. Disagreement here in non
- 3:21essentials liberty and in all things charity, in all things
- 3:27love. The worst case scenario in our
- 3:29chapter today would have been if hatred and bitterness had welled
- 3:32up between Jews and Gentiles. We are one people, one family,
- 3:36brought together by the blood of Christ in all things charity.
- 3:41Whether we agree or disagree with our brothers and sisters,
- 3:44let our love for them be stronger than any like or
- 3:47dislike of their opinions, and the unity and love in Christ
- 3:50Church will be a testimony to the world of the beauty of the
- 3:54gospel and the glory of our great God.
