- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts Chapter 11, we again see
- 0:45the gospel spreading among the Gentiles.
- 0:48In particular, in this chapter, we get to witness the birth of
- 0:50the church at Antioch. This church is the first Gentile
- 0:54church, meaning that now we're seeing faith in Jesus by the
- 0:57power of the Spirit through the proclamation of the gospel,
- 1:00reach more than just individuals or small clusters of Gentiles,
- 1:04but entire groups at a time. When news from Antioch reaches
- 1:08the church at Jerusalem, they send one of their own that they
- 1:11trust to take a closer look at what's happening among the
- 1:13Greeks in Antioch. And who do they send about?
- 1:16Our old friend Barnabas. Remember, Barnabas real name is
- 1:19Joseph, but he's received the nickname Barnabas, which means
- 1:22Son of encouragement. Listen to what the text says
- 1:25happens after Barnabas arrives. Then when he arrived and
- 1:29witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage
- 1:32them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord, for he
- 1:35was a good man and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.
- 1:39And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord.
- 1:41And he left for Tarsus to look for Saul.
- 1:44And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch.
- 1:46And for an entire year they met with the church and taught
- 1:49considerable numbers, and the disciples were first called
- 1:52Christians in Antioch. So Barnabas arrives, and there
- 1:56is no doubt that what is happening in Antioch is a move
- 1:58of God. And what does he do?
- 2:01Two things. First, rejoice, He's praising
- 2:04God. God is moving.
- 2:06He's expanding his Kingdom. And Barnabas is exulting.
- 2:09Second, he encourages. He encourages the people of
- 2:13Antioch. And his encouragement is not
- 2:15just to pat on the back. No, he encourages them to keep
- 2:18moving toward what's true, encouraging them with resolute
- 2:21heart to remain true to the Lord.
- 2:23He steps into what is likely viewed by the church at
- 2:26Jerusalem as a controversial situation, Gentiles coming to
- 2:30the Lord in droves. Could this be right?
- 2:32But Barnabas doesn't miss the main thing.
- 2:35God is at work, and he participates in exactly the way
- 2:38God has equipped him to participate.
- 2:41And he doesn't stop there. And this is so cool.
- 2:44Barnabas knows that what these converted pagans, what these new
- 2:47Christians need is discipleship. They need to be taught to be LED
- 2:52to be equipped. So Barnabas calls someone who in
- 2:55his own right is a pretty controversial figure in
- 2:57Jerusalem, but he's been specifically equipped by God for
- 3:01this situation. Saul of Tarsus, who we know as
- 3:04the apostle Paul. Here's what's so beautiful.
- 3:07Barnabas is so happy to be a part of what the Lord is doing.
- 3:11He's not looking for credit. He's not looking for status or
- 3:14position. He knows how the Spirit has
- 3:16gifted him, and not just that, he knows how the Spirit has
- 3:20gifted other members of the church.
- 3:21So much so that when the position opens up for lead
- 3:24pastor at Antioch, Barnabas isn't angling for it.
- 3:28He's calling his persecutor turn Brother Saul to come and lead.
- 3:31This is what it looks like for the church to be the church.
- 3:35To rejoice with those who are rejoicing.
- 3:37To participate in the work of God.
- 3:39To live out your own gifts with no envy of the gifts of others.
- 3:43To pass the ball, To be a team player.
- 3:45This is the body of Christ firing on all cylinders.
- 3:50Are there areas of your life where you could be a Barnabas?
- 3:53Where you could purposefully step away from the spotlight so
- 3:56that God would be glorified? Where you could bring in a
- 3:59brother or sister to a work the Lord is doing so that God would
- 4:02be glorified? Where you could see the Lord at
- 4:05work in a situation that is out of the ordinary and praise Him
- 4:08for it. You'll be better for it, and God
- 4:11will get the glory through it.
