- 0:00Acts chapter 4 As they were speaking to the people, the
- 0:03priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees
- 0:05came up to them, being greatly disturbed, because they were
- 0:08teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the
- 0:10resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them and
- 0:13put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
- 0:17But many of those who had heard the message believed, and the
- 0:19number of the men came to be about 5000.
- 0:22On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered
- 0:25together in Jerusalem, and Anis the high priest was there, and
- 0:28Caiaphas and John and Alexander and all who were of high
- 0:32priestly descent. When they'd placed them in the
- 0:34center, they began to inquire, by what power or in what name
- 0:37have you done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy
- 0:39Spirit, said to them, rulers and elders of the people, if we are
- 0:43on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how
- 0:46this man has been made, well, let it be made known to all of
- 0:49you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of
- 0:52Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised
- 0:55from the dead, by this name, this man stands here before you
- 0:58in good health. He is the stone which was
- 1:00rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief
- 1:03cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one
- 1:06else. For there is no other name under
- 1:08heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.
- 1:12Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John,
- 1:14and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men,
- 1:18they were amazed and began to recognize them as having been
- 1:21with Jesus. And seeing the man who had been
- 1:23helped standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
- 1:27But when they had ordered them to leave the council, they began
- 1:29to confer with one another, saying, What shall we do with
- 1:31these men? For the fact that a noteworthy
- 1:33miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live
- 1:36in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
- 1:39But so that it will not spread any further among the people,
- 1:42let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name.
- 1:45When they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak
- 1:48or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
- 1:50But Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is
- 1:53right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to
- 1:55God, you be the Judge, for we cannot stop speaking about what
- 1:59we have seen and heard. When they had threatened them
- 2:01further, they let them go, finding no basis on which to
- 2:04punish them on account of the people, because they were all
- 2:06glorifying God for what had happened.
- 2:08For the man was more than 40 years old on whom this miracle
- 2:11of healing had been performed. When they had been released,
- 2:13they went to their own companions and reported all that
- 2:16the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
- 2:18When they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with
- 2:201 accord and said, O Lord, it is you who made the heaven and the
- 2:24earth and the sea, and all that is in them, Who by the Holy
- 2:27Spirit, through the mouth of our Father David, your servant,
- 2:30said, Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples devise feudal
- 2:33things? The kings of the earth took
- 2:35their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the
- 2:38Lord and against his Christ. For truly in this city they were
- 2:42gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you
- 2:45anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles
- 2:48and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your
- 2:51purpose predestined to occur. And now, Lord, take note of
- 2:54their threats and grant that your bond servants may speak
- 2:57your word with all confidence, while you extend your hand to
- 3:00heal. And signs and wonders take place
- 3:02through the name of your holy servant Jesus.
- 3:05When they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together
- 3:07was shaken. They were all filled with the
- 3:10Holy Spirit and began to speak the Word of God with boldness.
- 3:13And the congregation of those who believed were of 1 heart and
- 3:16soul, and not one of them claimed that anything belonging
- 3:19to Him was his own. But all things were common
- 3:21property to them. And with great power the
- 3:23apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord
- 3:26Jesus. And abundant grace was upon them
- 3:28all. For there was not a needy person
- 3:30among them. For all who were owners of land
- 3:32or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales,
- 3:36and lay them at the apostles feet, and they would be
- 3:38distributed to each as any had need.
- 3:40Now Joseph a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called
- 3:43Barnabas by the apostles, which translated means Son of
- 3:46encouragement, and who owned a tract of land, sold it and
- 3:50brought the money, and laid it at the apostles feet.
