- 0:03sky, and instead of boring clouds and a bit of blue, you
- 0:07see a gigantic glowing ring stretching from one side of the
- 0:10horizon to the other. Like Saturn.
- 0:13But it's Earth, our Earth. That is exactly what we are
- 0:16talking about today. And I promise you, by the end of
- 0:18this episode, you will never look at the sky the same way
- 0:20again. Welcome to the Curious kid cast.

- 0:45Welcome, welcome. Welcome to The Curious Kid Cast,
- 0:48the show where we take the biggest, brainiest, most
- 0:51wonderfully strange questions in the universe and actually answer
- 0:54them properly. I'm Charlie, your host, your
- 0:56guide and yourself appointed Chief of Curiosity.
- 0:59Today's question comes from a brilliant listener named Priya
- 1:01from Brisbane in Australia, who sent in this absolute banger of
- 1:05a question after her class did a project on the solar system.
- 1:08Now Priya's teacher asked everyone to draw their favorite
- 1:11planet. Most kids drew Earth.
- 1:13A few drew Mars. One kid drew a planet that was,
- 1:15according to Priya, just a wobbly purple circle with a face
- 1:18on it, which is not technically a planet but gets full marks for
- 1:22creativity. Priya drew Saturn because of the
- 1:25rings. And then she sat back, looked at
- 1:27her drawing, and had a thought so enormous it practically
- 1:30echoed around the classroom. She asked what if Earth had
- 1:33rings like Saturn and Priya? That is exactly the kind of
- 1:37question this show exists for. Your teacher should give you
- 1:40extra credit. Please forward this episode to
- 1:42them as evidence. Let's start with the basics,
- 1:45because before we go flying off into space, we should probably
- 1:48understand what rings actually are.
- 1:50Here is the thing that might completely surprise you.
- 1:53Saturn's rings are not one big solid hula hoop floating around
- 1:56the planet. I know, I know, that is what
- 1:58most pictures make them look like.
- 2:00But no, Saturn's rings are actually made of countless tiny
- 2:03pieces of material all orbiting around the planet.
- 2:05Some of those pieces are as small as a speck of dust, some
- 2:08of the size of a Pebble. Some are as big as a house, some
- 2:11are as big as an entire mountain, and they are mostly
- 2:14made of water ice mixed with bits of rock and dust.
- 2:17So imagine trillions of tiny icy chunks all zooming around Saturn
- 2:21at the same time in an enormous spinning cosmic swarm.
- 2:25It is less like a hula hoop and more like if you drop to 10
- 2:28billion piece jigsaw puzzle in space and none of the pieces
- 2:32could agree on where to go. Saturn is the most famous ringed
- 2:35planet, but here is a fact that might knock your socks right
- 2:38off. Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune all
- 2:41have rings too. They are fainter, harder to see
- 2:44and nowhere near as spectacular as Saturn's, but they are
- 2:47definitely there. So rings are not some impossible
- 2:50fantasy, they are real thing. Multiple planets have them.
- 2:53Earth just currently does not. And we are going having to spend
- 2:55this whole episode imagining that it does Earth.
- 2:58Buckle up, you are getting a makeover.
- 3:00So how would rings form in the 1st place?
- 3:04Scientists think it can happen a few different ways.
- 3:06Sometimes a moon drifts too close to a planet, and the
- 3:09planet's gravity is so incredibly strong that it
- 3:11basically rips the moon apart. That sounds horrifying.
- 3:14If you are the moon, one minute you are a perfectly normal moon,
- 3:17minding your own business doing moon things.
- 3:19The next minute gravity has grabbed you by all sides and
- 3:21torn you into a billion icy pieces.
- 3:23There is actually a name for the distance since at which this
- 3:25happens. It is called the Roche limit,
- 3:27which sounds like the name of a very dramatic French chef, but
- 3:30is actually the point where a planets gravity can overpower
- 3:33the forces holding a large object together.
- 3:35Cross that line and well, goodbye moon.
- 3:38Hello rings. If Earth had rings, they would
- 3:41probably have formed because something dramatic happened a
- 3:44very long time ago. Maybe a small moon was
- 3:47shattered. Maybe a huge asteroid broke
- 3:50apart near us. However it happened, the result
- 3:53would be an enormous number of objects orbiting Earth, all at
- 3:56tremendous speed. And here is one of the most mind
- 3:59bending science facts in the whole universe.
- 4:02Those ring particles would be falling the entire time.
- 4:05Constantly falling. But here is the trick.
- 4:07They're also moving sideways so fast that they keep missing
- 4:10earth. Think about throwing a ball.
- 4:12It falls to the ground. Throw it harder, it goes farther
- 4:15before landing. Throw it at an absolutely
- 4:17impossible speed and it would fall around the earth rather
- 4:20than into it. That is what satellites do.
- 4:22That is what the moon does, and that is what ring particles
- 4:24would be doing too. Eternally falling, eternally
- 4:27missing. It is honestly one of the most
- 4:29beautiful things about physics right now.
- 4:32For the really exciting bit, what would you actually see if
- 4:34you walked outside and Earth had rings?
- 4:37If you were standing near the equator, you might see a
- 4:40brilliant glowing arch stretching across the sky from
- 4:42horizon to horizon, like someone painted a road through the
- 4:45heavens. If you live further north or
- 4:47South, the rings would appear at a different angle, like a
- 4:50gleaming curved blade at the poles.
- 4:52They might not be as visible at all, which is a bit unfair if
- 4:55you are a Penguin, but that is just science.
- 4:57The rings would reflect sunlight and could be absolutely dazzling
- 5:01during the day. They might appear as a pale
- 5:03glowing band. At sunset they could blaze
- 5:05orange, pink and gold. At night they might make the sky
- 5:08so much brighter that genuinely dark nights would become very
- 5:12rare. In some places it would be
- 5:13spectacular and also probably very convenient for anyone who
- 5:17likes looking at stars through a telescope.
- 5:20But here is where it gets interesting and a little bit
- 5:22unexpected. All that extra light bouncing
- 5:24around the sky would not just be pretty, it could mess with
- 5:27nature in some serious ways. A huge number of animals depend
- 5:30on darkness. Owls hunt in dim light, bats fly
- 5:33at night, Sea turtles use moonlight and Starlight to
- 5:36navigate when they hatch on beaches.
- 5:38Nocturnal insects are attracted to light and if the nights
- 5:40became brighter they could become confused, which would
- 5:43then affect the birds and bats that eat them, which would then
- 5:46affect the plants that need insects for pollination and so
- 5:49on. Pull on one thread and the whole
- 5:51jumper starts to unravel. Earths ecosystems are like that.
- 5:54Complicated, connected and deeply unimpressed by giant
- 5:58space rings changing the lighting.
- 6:01Now here is something I did not expect when I first thought
- 6:03about this. Rings could cast shadows onto
- 6:05Earth. Actual shadows in space.
- 6:08Think about that. A structure made of ice and rock
- 6:10orbiting thousands of kilometers above your head could block
- 6:13sunlight from reaching parts of the planet.
- 6:15Depending on the season and the tilt of the rings, some regions
- 6:18might spend part of the year under a faint band of shade that
- 6:21could lower temperatures, change rainfall, shift wind patterns.
- 6:25Scientists who study climate know that even small changes in
- 6:28sunlight can have big effects. A giant ring system would not be
- 6:32a small change, it would be enormous and nobody would be
- 6:34able to agree on whose fault it was.
- 6:37What about space travel? This is where things get
- 6:40genuinely tricky right now. Getting a rocket into orbit is
- 6:43already expensive, complicated, and takes a ridiculous amount of
- 6:47engineering. Add a ring full of fast moving
- 6:50icy debris between Earth and space and suddenly it becomes
- 6:53extremely dangerous too. A tiny piece of ice moving at
- 6:56orbital speed hits like an exploding cannonball.
- 6:59Seriously, space agency. These already have to track
- 7:02thousands of pieces of old junk in orbit around Earth, because
- 7:05even a small bolt from a broken satellite could punch through a
- 7:08spacecraft with rings. There would be far more stuff to
- 7:11dodge. Astronauts might need specially
- 7:13reinforced ships. Rockets might have to take very
- 7:16specific paths through safe gaps in the ring.
- 7:19Space tourism would probably have a much longer list of
- 7:22warnings. Let's talk about ancient history
- 7:25for a moment, because if Earth had always had rings, the whole
- 7:28of human history would look completely different.
- 7:31Ancient people would have seen those rings every day and built
- 7:34enormous stories around them. Some cultures might have
- 7:37believed the ring was a bridge to the heavens, a road used by
- 7:40gods or spirits to travel between worlds.
- 7:42Others might have thought it was a giant serpent curled around
- 7:45the earth, or a Halo, or the boundary between the living
- 7:48world and whatever comes next. Temples and monuments would
- 7:50almost certainly have been built to align with it.
- 7:52Just a Stonehenge aligns with the sun.
- 7:54Imagine a whole ancient civilization whose entire
- 7:57calendar, religion, and farming schedule was organized around
- 7:59the rings. Their priests would probably
- 8:02have been very smug about it. Sailors and explorers would have
- 8:06used the rings for navigation the way they used the stars.
- 8:10Calendars might have been based on the rings brightness at
- 8:13different times of year. Scientists think the rings would
- 8:16shift slightly in appearance as Earth goes around the sun,
- 8:19sometimes looking wider, sometimes narrower.
- 8:21Festivals would probably celebrate those changes.
- 8:24There would be a ring festival with food, hopefully ring shaped
- 8:28food. I would definitely go to ring
- 8:30festival. Here is one of the most
- 8:33astonishing facts about real rings and this one genuinely
- 8:37shocked me. Saturns rings are unbelievably
- 8:40wide, but also unbelievably thin.
- 8:42They stretch out for hundreds of thousands of kilometers across,
- 8:46but in many places they're only about 10 meters to 1 kilometer
- 8:49thick. If you scaled Saturn's rings
- 8:51down to the size of a sheet of paper, they would be incredibly
- 8:54flat. So rings are not giant chunky
- 8:57Halos. They are more like the thinnest,
- 8:59widest cosmic pancakes you can possibly imagine.
- 9:02And if you were somehow flying a spacecraft through the rings,
- 9:05you might not see a wall of solid material.
- 9:07You might see separate chunks spread out around you, each on
- 9:10its own orbit. Still dangerous, still
- 9:12beautiful, but not like flying into a rock face.
- 9:15More like flying through a very large, very cold, very hazardous
- 9:18snow globe. There is also something
- 9:21fascinating called Ring rain, and it is exactly what it sounds
- 9:25like. Tiny particles from Saturn's
- 9:27rings are actually falling into Saturn's atmosphere right now.
- 9:31Scientists discovered this not very long ago, and it was quite
- 9:34a surprise. Material from the rings is
- 9:36slowly raining down into the planet.
- 9:38If Earth had rings, something similar might happen here.
- 9:41Very small particles could drift down through the atmosphere.
- 9:44Overtime, larger pieces could burn up as meteors.
- 9:47Earth might experience far more frequent meteor showers than we
- 9:50do today. Our skies could regularly be lit
- 9:53up by streaks of burning material.
- 9:55That would be brilliant, honestly.
- 9:57Except for aeroplanes. Maybe they might have some
- 9:59notes. Now here is a thought.
- 10:02Earth with rings might actually be easier for aliens to spot.
- 10:06Astronomers find distant planets by looking for them passing in
- 10:08front of stars and blocking a tiny amount of light.
- 10:12Rings would block extra light. A ringed Earth would produce a
- 10:15slightly different signal. If there are intelligent beings
- 10:18somewhere out there looking for planets, they might notice us
- 10:20more easily if we had rings. Whether that is exciting or
- 10:24slightly alarming is a matter of personal preference and also how
- 10:28much science fiction you have watched.
- 10:30Would life here be different? Absolutely.
- 10:33Would it still exist? Almost certainly yes.
- 10:36Humans are remarkably good at adapting to basically anything.
- 10:39Put rings in the sky and within a few generations people would
- 10:43just be used to it. Children born into that world
- 10:46would think rings were completely normal.
- 10:48They would grumble because the ring glare was making it hard to
- 10:50see a meteor shower. They would moan about ring
- 10:52shadow making their afternoon cold.
- 10:54Parents would say things like in my day we were grateful for the
- 10:57rings and kids would roll their eyes exactly as they do now.
- 11:01All right, curious ones it is. Quiz time. 3 questions, a few
- 11:06seconds to think and then the answers.
- 11:08No peeking ahead, here we go question one.
- 11:13What are Saturn's rings mostly made of?
- 11:16Is it a solid gold, B water ice and rock, or C really old
- 11:22cheese? The answer is B water ice and
- 11:30rock. Saturn's rings are made mostly
- 11:32of water ice mixed with bits of rock and dust.
- 11:35Not gold unfortunately, and definitely not cheese, although
- 11:39that would have made the ring rain much more interesting.
- 11:42Question two, what is the special name for the distance
- 11:45where a planets gravity can RIP a moon or large object apart?
- 11:49Is it A the danger zone, B the rush limit, or C the smashy bit?
- 12:00The answer is B the Roche limits.
- 12:02That is the boundary where a planet's gravity overpowers the
- 12:05forces holding a large object together.
- 12:08Cross that line and things get very messy very quickly.
- 12:13Question three Why are orbiting ring particles always falling
- 12:17but never hitting Earth? Is it A because they are scared
- 12:20of heights, B because they are moving sideways so fast they
- 12:24keep missing the planet, or C because Earth politely asked
- 12:28them not to? The answer is B they are moving
- 12:36sideways at such incredible speed that even though gravity
- 12:40is pulling them toward Earth, they keep flying past it.
- 12:43They are in a constant state of falling and missing.
- 12:46It is one of the most brilliant tricks in the whole universe,
- 12:49and gravity came up with it entirely on its own.
- 12:53And there you have it. If Earth had rings like Saturn,
- 12:56our skies would be glowing, our nights would be brighter, our
- 12:59animals would be confused, our space program would have a lot
- 13:02more paperwork, and ancient civilizations would have built
- 13:04some truly extraordinary temples.
- 13:06It would be dangerous, dramatic, beautiful, and utterly
- 13:10extraordinary. And the most amazing part is
- 13:12that four other planets in our own solar system actually do
- 13:15have rings right now. The universe decided Earth did
- 13:18not need them. But there is absolutely nothing
- 13:20stopping you from imagining otherwise.
