- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 21, we see
- 0:45another of Jesus appearances to his disciples after his
- 0:48resurrection. This one in particular contains
- 0:50a powerful interaction between Jesus and Peter.
- 0:53Before we get there, though, I want you to remember how Jesus
- 0:56called Peter into the ministry. Listen to this account from Luke
- 0:59chapter 5, verses one through 11.
- 1:02Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him
- 1:04and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the lake
- 1:07of Genesaret and he saw two boats lying at the edge of the
- 1:10lake. But the fishermen had gotten out
- 1:12of them and were washing their Nets.
- 1:14And he got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and
- 1:16asked him to put out a little way from the land.
- 1:19And he sat down and began teaching the people from the
- 1:21boat. When he had finished speaking,
- 1:23he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and let down your
- 1:26Nets for a catch. Simon answered and said, Master
- 1:29we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as
- 1:32you say and let down the Nets. When they had done this they
- 1:35enclosed a great quantity of fish and their Nets began to
- 1:39break. So they signalled to their
- 1:40partners in the other boat for them to come and help them.
- 1:43And they came and filled both of the boats so that they began to
- 1:46sink. But when Simon Peters saw that
- 1:48he fell down at Jesus feet saying, Go away from me Lord,
- 1:51for I am a sinful man. For amazement had seized him and
- 1:54all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had
- 1:57taken. And so also were James and John,
- 2:00sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.
- 2:03And Jesus said to Simon, do not fear, from now on you will be
- 2:06catching men. When they had brought their
- 2:09boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
- 2:12Now bearing Jesus call of Peter in mind, I want to read to you
- 2:16from today's chapter how Jesus interacts with Peter, who during
- 2:20Jesus crucifixion had denied him three times.
- 2:23This time he isn't calling Peter, he's restoring him.
- 2:26Listen, after these things Jesus manifested himself again to the
- 2:30disciples at the sea of Tiberius, and he manifested
- 2:33himself in this way. Simon Peter and Thomas called
- 2:36Didymus and Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee
- 2:39and two others of his disciples were together.
- 2:42Simon Peter said to them, I'm going fishing.
- 2:45They said to him, We will also come with you.
- 2:47They went out and got into the boat, and that night they caught
- 2:50nothing. But when the day was now
- 2:51breaking, Jesus stood on the beach.
- 2:53Yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
- 2:56So Jesus said to them, Children, you do not have any fish, do
- 3:00you? They answered him, no.
- 3:02And he said to them, Cast the net on the right hand side of
- 3:05the boat, and you will find a catch.
- 3:07So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because
- 3:10of the great number of fish. Therefore, that disciple whom
- 3:13Jesus loves said to Peter, it is the Lord.
- 3:16So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his
- 3:19outer garment on, for he was stripped for work and threw
- 3:22himself into the sea. Jesus then proceeds to ask Peter
- 3:263 separate times, one for each denial, whether he loves him.
- 3:30After each of Peter's affirmations of his love for
- 3:32Jesus, Jesus instructs him to tend my lambs.
- 3:36He is restoring Peter to ministry.
- 3:39He's letting him know that he is forgiven and that he is invited
- 3:42to serve Jesus in obedience by taking care of his people, his
- 3:46church. This is Jesus, the tender
- 3:49shepherd, the forgiving Saviour, the faithful friend.
- 3:54We've seen his character on display throughout these 4
- 3:56gospels that we've studied. And in that character we've seen
- 3:59the very character of God the Father as well.
- 4:01If you are in Christ, you are loved, you are forgiven, you are
- 4:06commissioned, sent to do His bidding.
- 4:09Will you live out this calling with all your heart today?
