- 1:02Speaker 1: and real estate broker and designer Egypt Shroud and her
- 1:04Speaker 1: husband he's new my life, like I've stated it, builder
- 1:07Speaker 1: Mike Jackson. They're based in Atlanta. If you can be
- 1:10Speaker 1: a dreamer and you want to dream about it, your home,
- 1:12Speaker 1: your fantasy, your your place that you want to rest
- 1:15Speaker 1: your head and your family, think about the Egypt will
- 1:17Speaker 1: designer and Mike will build it. That's a slogan, not
- 1:20Speaker 1: buying that stairs. They know plenty by juggling the booming
- 1:23Speaker 1: property business, pleasing clients, managing their home and raising three daughters.
- 1:27Speaker 1: And they all beautiful dollars, so precious, especially the young
- 1:30Speaker 1: one when he has when you have this one scene
- 1:32Speaker 1: when he walking around with a pampa in his hand,
- 1:34Speaker 1: You're gonna love him. They make it look effortless and
- 1:38Speaker 1: fund in a new HDTV series marriedt to Real Estate,
- 1:41Speaker 1: available to stream owned Discovery Plus. You can also catch
- 1:45Speaker 1: Egypt and Mike's guests judges in the last season or

- 1:56Speaker 1: Mike's a new one. You know, she's she's bringing him
- 1:58Speaker 1: into the into the the you know, the hands of
- 2:03Speaker 1: behind up here. Now you see why she's happy all
- 2:05Speaker 1: the time. Now Discovery plus we're looking at the new renovation.
- 2:08Speaker 1: King and Queen King and Queen of Atva. Thank you,
- 2:15Speaker 1: ra Sean. We appreciate that love. And you're absolutely right. Um,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I've been around you and not we know each other
- 2:22Speaker 1: quaite well absolutely, but it's a good but you know
- 2:25Speaker 1: something each it's a good being around because all the
- 2:28Speaker 1: time I've always seen you. First of all, your personality
- 2:30Speaker 1: has been positive. And one thing I've loved about her
- 2:33Speaker 1: Michael's death, you know, opportunities. She's not. She's fearless because
- 2:37Speaker 1: that's what a lot of people do. Because I met
- 2:39Speaker 1: her in radio and so when some people start saying
- 2:43Speaker 1: I want to do something else, they can get so
- 2:46Speaker 1: locked into and comfortable they don't do it, and so
- 2:49Speaker 1: and so so many different levels and so and that
- 2:52Speaker 1: was that was that was urban radio that she was
- 2:54Speaker 1: in Okay, and then she came to Now she's coming
- 2:57Speaker 1: into another area of UM. I want to say, just
- 3:01Speaker 1: there's not we don't see many black people won't see
- 3:03Speaker 1: many people of color like you two. That's why it's
- 3:06Speaker 1: so refreshing to see that. And I like to believe
- 3:08Speaker 1: this is something we're gonna see on the regular basis.
- 3:10Speaker 1: But in seeing the first two episodes of your new series,
- 3:14Speaker 1: Marriage to Real Estate with like we said, there's a discovery.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Plus I found a family environment that I was engaged with.
- 3:22Speaker 1: But more importantly, this is what y'all do. I never
- 3:25Speaker 1: questioned that you guys who are prop I never called
- 3:29Speaker 1: you up saying that that's what can happen. You know,
- 3:30Speaker 1: they get a cute couple like you guys, you got
- 3:32Speaker 1: the cute little children. You know, they said, y'all be
- 3:36Speaker 1: a great TV show. It's no doubt in my mind
- 3:40Speaker 1: this is what y'all do. But each of I have
- 3:42Speaker 1: to go back to this because you know, this is
- 3:44Speaker 1: I call this to my masterclass series. Because you're talking
- 3:47Speaker 1: about people in a market. Now we all know it's
- 3:50Speaker 1: hard to get a home out that nowadays. Okay, it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: it's it's sometimes thirty people waiting on the same building
- 3:56Speaker 1: and trying to call that home. How did y'all, how
- 3:59Speaker 1: did y'all able? How are we all even to do
- 4:00Speaker 1: a series and this type of real estate boom where
- 4:04Speaker 1: homes are scarce and people are trying to make a
- 4:06Speaker 1: decision on different properties while you're doing the show. So Rishwan,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you know I'm a real estate Broker's what I've done for,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, twenty years, And that also means that I've
- 4:18Speaker 1: lived through and strived through and grew through every real
- 4:23Speaker 1: estate environment. You know, when the bubble bursts and you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: people were losing their houses and needed to be saved
- 4:29Speaker 1: with short you know, from foreclosures with short sales. I
- 4:32Speaker 1: coached them through it and help clients through that. Now
- 4:34Speaker 1: we're in an environment where first time home buyers are
- 4:37Speaker 1: being edged out completely. Even experienced home buyers are like
- 4:42Speaker 1: one of thirty different offers and listings are going for
- 4:45Speaker 1: fifty sixty seventy thousand over acts the price. I mean,
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's crazy out here right now, But I think that
- 4:52Speaker 1: this is what I've been built for, if that makes sense.
- 4:55Speaker 1: All these years of working through, living through, existing through,
- 4:59Speaker 1: buying through when evading through in our own lives has
- 5:01Speaker 1: prepared us for this moment where we can help our
- 5:04Speaker 1: clients through. And there if I if I told you
- 5:07Speaker 1: the house and I would be I would be giving
- 5:09Speaker 1: away all my tricks of the trade when I go
- 5:12Speaker 1: up against other offers. So I won't go there. But
- 5:15Speaker 1: what I will say is stay encouraged. And if you're
- 5:19Speaker 1: in the market to buy a home, make sure all
- 5:22Speaker 1: real estate agents were not created equal. They were not.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You take a you take a class, you get a
- 5:27Speaker 1: license if you pass the test. But what you want
- 5:29Speaker 1: is a season to experience shown improving real estate professional
- 5:34Speaker 1: who can coach you and come up with a strategy
- 5:36Speaker 1: to help you, you know, get successfully to the finish line.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Great now, Mike, you know when I google Egypt, you
- 5:42Speaker 1: know a lot of things pop up, pictures, photos, you's
- 5:44Speaker 1: posing this way, posing this way, television show, television show,
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know, extention background in the entertainment, you this business,
- 5:52Speaker 1: or I just see a reference to a business. Give
- 5:54Speaker 1: us a little background on your journey into a home building,
- 5:59Speaker 1: renovations and uh in this market, and so we can
- 6:02Speaker 1: get an assist your culture and your expertise. Definitely, definitely.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So I've been in construction, I would to say since
- 6:10Speaker 1: I was a kid. You know, I started with my
- 6:12Speaker 1: uncle and my grandfather. They had a construction company and
- 6:15Speaker 1: they would always bring me along. Um future forward, I
- 6:19Speaker 1: started with the local twenty eight trade in New York
- 6:22Speaker 1: City where I was a journeysman for sheet metal work, right,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and then I transitioned into owning my own company, which
- 6:29Speaker 1: is Jackson Draper Renovations, where we pretty much do it
- 6:32Speaker 1: all carpentry, plumbing, electricity, um, you know, exterior work, all
- 6:37Speaker 1: of the above. It's myself and my uncle, my partner
- 6:41Speaker 1: which is um you'll see him on the show as well.
- 6:43Speaker 1: His name is Mark. And this is what I do.
- 6:46Speaker 1: You know, my wife and I were teaming up what
- 6:48Speaker 1: you'll see it in the show where we're trying to
- 6:50Speaker 1: merge the two businesses under one umbrella, you know, bringing
- 6:54Speaker 1: real estate, construction designs, one design house. But you gotta play.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You gonna tell the shown as we're trying. I don't
- 7:01Speaker 1: think he knows the story that that's how we met.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It is how yes, thank you, thank you kept his
- 7:07Speaker 1: brother out like you do on the show. Anyway, that
- 7:13Speaker 1: it's not that I was trying not to take up
- 7:15Speaker 1: too much of the time. Like I said, this is
- 7:17Speaker 1: a masterclass we're teaching. We're educating people about this beautiful couple.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Here's what was on my mind is why I didn't
- 7:25Speaker 1: want to talk too much about me because I wanted
- 7:26Speaker 1: to piggyback off of the discussion you brought up in
- 7:29Speaker 1: the beginning. As far as we're not meaning feeless, she's
- 7:32Speaker 1: beyond not feelings. She's also selfless. She's despite to wear.
- 7:37Speaker 1: She doesn't worry about what everyone else is gonna think,
- 7:39Speaker 1: despite of what it's cool or despite what's hot at
- 7:42Speaker 1: the moment, She's gonna do what's gonna make sense for
- 7:44Speaker 1: her and what it's going to be successful for those
- 7:47Speaker 1: around her, meaning family. It's not about the business or
- 7:49Speaker 1: the hype of the business. It's about, Okay, what's smart
- 7:52Speaker 1: for the moment and what's gonna make sense in the future.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So that's what I wanted to touch on. That's why
- 7:56Speaker 1: I can go for much into I'll keep you. Thank
- 7:59Speaker 1: you so. But yes, we met in our early stages.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I was actually DJ and I still do periody radio DJ.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you when I met you, I was
- 8:11Speaker 1: a radio DJ. He was a radio d okay in
- 8:13Speaker 1: world wide. You know. We met in three separate incidents,
- 8:17Speaker 1: but one of them took us back to where I
- 8:19Speaker 1: ended up on a rooftop with her because she had
- 8:21Speaker 1: her foot mill. I was stuck in the room, you know,
- 8:23Speaker 1: trying to the shelf. Tell the story, please, did I
- 8:30Speaker 1: tell you? Sean? Okay, okay, okay. So, so I was
- 8:37Speaker 1: flipping houses in Newark, New Jersey while I was a
- 8:40Speaker 1: radio personality in New York City, right, And I'm a scorpio,
- 8:45Speaker 1: And what that kind of means is if you back
- 8:47Speaker 1: me into a corner, my stinger comes up and sometimes
- 8:50Speaker 1: goes over well, but not always over overwhelmed in business.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And so what happened was all my contractors walked off
- 8:56Speaker 1: the job because I came off hard. It's hard to
- 9:01Speaker 1: be a woman working in construction as well. You know,
- 9:03Speaker 1: men don't always take that well. And so when you
- 9:06Speaker 1: kind of come also, and that's part of the country,
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm just really chaupnistic. Well, just so I can tend
- 9:11Speaker 1: for a fact, I lived in New York, I've lived
- 9:13Speaker 1: all this. It gets really chauphnistic in that northeast part
- 9:16Speaker 1: of the country, especialist Jersey area, it does. So so
- 9:20Speaker 1: they walked up the job and I later found myself
- 9:22Speaker 1: trying to tar a hole in the roof by myself,
- 9:27Speaker 1: and I fell through the roof and in that moment,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I realized I needed some help. I called my mentor
- 9:33Speaker 1: at the time, who referred him this guy, And when
- 9:37Speaker 1: he pulled up, I'm like, what are you doing here?
- 9:39Speaker 1: You're a dj that's funny, that's funny. Rock rooftop baby,
- 9:46Speaker 1: right right right, right, right, right right, I'm a moving
- 9:49Speaker 1: walk all over this rooftop baby rock your word. I
- 9:54Speaker 1: didn't know he was. I didn't know he was really
- 9:56Speaker 1: also a businessman, and you know, he was a contractor,
- 9:59Speaker 1: and you know that that Djane was a facet of
- 10:02Speaker 1: what he did, but it wasn't all that all of
- 10:04Speaker 1: who he was. And we kind of fell in love
- 10:06Speaker 1: over that renovation. You saved my life, saved the shoe
- 10:10Speaker 1: for shore, You saved the shoe for show for shore.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Got that. You know. The interesting thing about and that
- 10:18Speaker 1: needn say interesting, is that you know, I tell everybody
- 10:22Speaker 1: and when I look at television now, television is so
- 10:25Speaker 1: fun for a person of color to me now because
- 10:28Speaker 1: I see us on television on long stories, I see
- 10:32Speaker 1: us in commercials, in a racial commercials all it's all
- 10:36Speaker 1: kind of things that really make you feel comfortable when
- 10:39Speaker 1: you turn on the TV, and make you comfortab when
- 10:41Speaker 1: you walk in the street. Here Okay, I guess you
- 10:42Speaker 1: were cool now in a way because you can see
- 10:44Speaker 1: me banking, me, dating, me, having my my Santa Claus
- 10:49Speaker 1: is black, all that good stuff. And so our president
- 10:52Speaker 1: was black, Yeah, absolutely so not vice president is black.
- 10:56Speaker 1: So you know, stuff becomes a little normal. We know
- 10:58Speaker 1: it's not all normal. But watching the show, um and
- 11:01Speaker 1: seeing you, guys, what do you think is the most
- 11:03Speaker 1: magical thing about you as a couple on TV talking
- 11:09Speaker 1: to people, encouraging them making life decisions and then showing
- 11:14Speaker 1: them that this is the best opportunity to move their
- 11:16Speaker 1: life forward. Sometimes there's a couple and sometimes as a family.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I think that for us, we have these conversations often,
- 11:24Speaker 1: right because as a black family, um, you know, on
- 11:28Speaker 1: national television where you're not just talking to an African
- 11:31Speaker 1: American audience, you know, questions come up. Even an advisory
- 11:35Speaker 1: if you know what I mean, You're you're an advisor
- 11:37Speaker 1: as well with Sean, so you know, an advisory it
- 11:39Speaker 1: is you know, what do we need to change anything
- 11:42Speaker 1: to appeal to the masses. And I think for us
- 11:45Speaker 1: the blessing in this entire experience as no one has
- 11:48Speaker 1: asked us to change a thing like I was on
- 11:50Speaker 1: the Today Show this morning in dreadlocks. You know what
- 11:54Speaker 1: I mean? I there, God is locks, the God is locksolitic.
- 12:00Speaker 1: But no, I think like Monday when I think about it,
- 12:03Speaker 1: like Monday, I shot a commercial, a commercial for the
- 12:06Speaker 1: International Excuse me, I'm sorry, I I shot a commercial
- 12:10Speaker 1: for the Intercontinental Exchange, right stock market, and no one
- 12:15Speaker 1: asked me to tone down anything like no attitude, no blackness,
- 12:19Speaker 1: no nothing on our show. That's very much who we are,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and our network h G TV loves it like we want,
- 12:27Speaker 1: we want y'all just as you are. I think that
- 12:30Speaker 1: that is a blessing in it and just this whole
- 12:32Speaker 1: experience our show, the idea that you know, we are
- 12:35Speaker 1: a black family successful. You know, we have beautiful children
- 12:38Speaker 1: who are sweet, who are educated. We're together, we're you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: we're married. We don't have a broken home, which is
- 12:45Speaker 1: what people stereotypically expect. Um, we don't fight, there's no
- 12:49Speaker 1: drama or gossip out there about us and you know,
- 12:52Speaker 1: cheating and all this. Not People kind of expect that
- 12:56Speaker 1: when they see African American families on TV that there's
- 12:59Speaker 1: gonna come a whole had the tricks with it and
- 13:02Speaker 1: the blessing in this experience, not only that we get
- 13:05Speaker 1: to do it together, is that there's no driving line,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and so we're showing we can do it too. We
- 13:09Speaker 1: are doing it too. We've always been here. Thank god,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you're just noticing it. Hey, Mike, I want to say this, Mike,
- 13:16Speaker 1: like she kind of said, she tries to set you
- 13:18Speaker 1: up a couple of times, you know, when she comes
- 13:20Speaker 1: in the room, ask you how this look? Baby? Just
- 13:23Speaker 1: look baby, and this she references, Oh, you trying to
- 13:26Speaker 1: say about my week? I said, oh no, my boy up, No,
- 13:31Speaker 1: come on by, just set you So about to feedback
- 13:36Speaker 1: over that as well as and answer your question with
- 13:38Speaker 1: the magic part. I think the magic in it is
- 13:40Speaker 1: that we are really doing the work right. We won't
- 13:44Speaker 1: step in and then say cut okay, somebody else come
- 13:47Speaker 1: and do this. Yes, you see a couple, not just
- 13:50Speaker 1: a black couple, a couple that is universally appealing to
- 13:53Speaker 1: the masses. Right. It's positive, it's full of family, it's
- 13:57Speaker 1: full of education, it's full of information, right to where
- 14:02Speaker 1: you can say, okay, I'm used to this. This sounds familiar,
- 14:07Speaker 1: This looks familiar. I'm tuning in, but I think what's
- 14:10Speaker 1: what It's good too, and you also see a little
- 14:12Speaker 1: bit of our masks. You know, you can tell drive
- 14:14Speaker 1: my crazy, you can tell what you're gonna do with
- 14:20Speaker 1: my board and Mike heat my boy, not my boy, Mike.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It's like I said, I just showed you all to examples.
- 14:25Speaker 1: What you trying to send them up? You know what
- 14:27Speaker 1: I'm saying, you know, talking about baby, I think I
- 14:30Speaker 1: eat too much here now I think I've eaten too
- 14:32Speaker 1: much baby. Where do you think? Uh, I'm not answering
- 14:36Speaker 1: that question of TV. No, you are doing me like that, honey.
- 14:39Speaker 1: You know that's the fun part of what I'm talking about,
- 14:41Speaker 1: this relationship, because that's what I'm doing by life, you know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: because but it's captured on film organically, and I'm gonna
- 14:47Speaker 1: be real about it. It ain't even by race. Now,
- 14:50Speaker 1: it's about join a couple. And that gives me information
- 14:54Speaker 1: because I watched these shows. These are type of shows
- 14:57Speaker 1: that will be running where you're the car dealerships, sitting
- 15:00Speaker 1: there way on your call, these type calls, This type
- 15:02Speaker 1: of shows that are running when you're waiting there in
- 15:04Speaker 1: the hospital lobby. These type of shows that are just running.
- 15:07Speaker 1: They're so comfortable because they're so informative. And that's the
- 15:11Speaker 1: part of it that I love because I love that
- 15:13Speaker 1: part where you know you you walk them through the house,
- 15:16Speaker 1: you know, and that's the part where you know if
- 15:18Speaker 1: people know what they're talking about when you because people
- 15:21Speaker 1: people really ship you, they're about to give their life
- 15:24Speaker 1: to you. And in some of these houses that you're
- 15:26Speaker 1: walking in, you can't be so forceful that you feel
- 15:29Speaker 1: like this is it a y'aut But that part walks
- 15:32Speaker 1: through that whole part of the creating that organic relationship.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Mike as a builder because she's the face of the
- 15:40Speaker 1: she's the dreamer, but you have to put it together.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And then she comes in and she had changed on you. Well,
- 15:45Speaker 1: why I didn't want it like that? I mean, like,
- 15:47Speaker 1: come on, don't do Mike like that on film. Don't
- 15:50Speaker 1: do them like that on film. But he laughs at
- 15:56Speaker 1: I loved it. I loved I loved it. I love
- 15:59Speaker 1: it when the floor was gold and on the floor
- 16:01Speaker 1: was brown, on the floor with this you go, oh babe,
- 16:04Speaker 1: where I got you? I got you? And she walked away. Okay,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'll be back, walk walking in and I'll just tell
- 16:12Speaker 1: you a couple of things that really messed him up.
- 16:14Speaker 1: She on the construction side, y'all. She walking there with
- 16:17Speaker 1: heels on, open toes, open toes, open toes. Here of course,
- 16:26Speaker 1: Mike saying, my day. I might be with my real
- 16:30Speaker 1: estate clients. I still need to look professional. They don't
- 16:33Speaker 1: understand me coming in the work boots. You talk to me,
- 16:38Speaker 1: Mike talked to me. Mike said, you're gonna used to
- 16:41Speaker 1: step on the nail, used to step on the rush.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I thought. I thought me and you were friends. Now
- 16:46Speaker 1: you taking his side. We will be right back with
- 16:48Speaker 1: more money making conversation with Rashan McDonald. It's finally here,
- 16:54Speaker 1: the season of celebration, and no matter how you celebrate

- 17:48Speaker 1: Now let's return to money making conversation with Rashawn McDonald.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I love the fact that the potential of who y'all
- 17:56Speaker 1: are to me, I'm comfortable. I want to watch, I
- 17:59Speaker 1: want to learn. I want to say, can I get that?
- 18:01Speaker 1: Can I get them to do that to my house?
- 18:04Speaker 1: That's what I know. It's special because I'm going like,
- 18:08Speaker 1: because you know, I've done a lot of remodeling. You know,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I have people from my house going so how do
- 18:12Speaker 1: they pulling that off? That? And it looks so beautiful.
- 18:16Speaker 1: But again, like I was saying, Mike, you are the builder.
- 18:19Speaker 1: You know she comes up with these pricings. Well, we
- 18:22Speaker 1: can only do it for a hundred thousand. We can't
- 18:24Speaker 1: do And they don't know that the gas meter sitting
- 18:27Speaker 1: over there with the window gonna be you know what
- 18:29Speaker 1: I'm saying, don't know that though, you know, but she
- 18:31Speaker 1: don't tell everybody. We're gonna put the window there. You
- 18:33Speaker 1: gotta come in and go, hey, baby, it's a gas
- 18:35Speaker 1: meter there. Uh, we'll take care of honey. I love you. Smooches. Yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 1: she she you know, she'll give them, um the division,
- 18:49Speaker 1: your sir, and then I will uh you know, softly
- 18:53Speaker 1: bring it back down to reality, make him feel comfortable. Um,
- 18:56Speaker 1: allow them to trust me, you know, one with smart decisions,
- 19:00Speaker 1: showing them how we can get there for some reason
- 19:02Speaker 1: they can't afford how we can get there for doing
- 19:05Speaker 1: for less, but by doing different options, right, Um. I
- 19:08Speaker 1: think it's all about listening and letting them speak and
- 19:11Speaker 1: let them be heard, allowing them to let you know
- 19:14Speaker 1: exactly what they want, and then you coming in and
- 19:18Speaker 1: making it feel relatable. You know what, Sean, What I
- 19:20Speaker 1: love about this man and why why this works is
- 19:24Speaker 1: because he lets me be me. He knows that you're right.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I'm a dreamer, I'm a visionary. I'm gonna show everything
- 19:32Speaker 1: and it's purest potential, um. And he let me live
- 19:36Speaker 1: that out, and then he will humbly bring everybody back
- 19:39Speaker 1: down to earth. Everything that he does. He even I
- 19:46Speaker 1: get car sick, uh, you know, so I have to drive,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and that's when when anybody's driving. Even if someone says
- 19:53Speaker 1: a car with a driver for me, I'm like, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: don't know if I want I want to drive because
- 19:57Speaker 1: I get really car sick. You know a lot of
- 20:00Speaker 1: and Rashane wouldn't be comfortable with their wife behind the wheel,
- 20:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So for for seventeen and
- 20:08Speaker 1: a half years, he'll sit in the passenger seat, but
- 20:12Speaker 1: and let me drive and be okay with that, you know,
- 20:14Speaker 1: And he's still the lead. He still leaves our family
- 20:17Speaker 1: even though break absolutely, absolutely, absolutely absolutely absolutely worried about
- 20:24Speaker 1: that seven year itch. You know what I'm saying, that
- 20:26Speaker 1: seven year itch. You know what I'm saying. But you
- 20:28Speaker 1: look at the beauty of all if we go through
- 20:30Speaker 1: the episodes, you don't do this show long. You have
- 20:33Speaker 1: three or wonderful children. They're girls, they're the part of
- 20:36Speaker 1: the show. Andreaged, part of the show. Like said, y'all
- 20:39Speaker 1: was part of the show. Talk about the overall casting
- 20:41Speaker 1: and the need to organically, you know, introduce your family.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And like I said, I only told the first two episodes,
- 20:47Speaker 1: so more people are going to be introduced. What was
- 20:49Speaker 1: the whole theory behind the introduction. Are you trying to
- 20:53Speaker 1: just let everybody know this is us? Or what was
- 20:56Speaker 1: the whole background behind that whole process. I think people
- 21:00Speaker 1: had to kind of get to know us first, right,
- 21:02Speaker 1: who who each of this, Who Mike is, who we
- 21:04Speaker 1: are as a couple, who we are as a family
- 21:06Speaker 1: with our children. But really, for our business is to work,
- 21:10Speaker 1: we could never do it alone. We got a whole
- 21:12Speaker 1: army behind us um and we want people to embrace
- 21:16Speaker 1: them as well normally with normalcy. So you know, we
- 21:20Speaker 1: kind of got to ease them and let you, let
- 21:21Speaker 1: you learn everybody. So Andre is a designer friend of mine.
- 21:24Speaker 1: He's super talented. He's done some of the biggest design
- 21:28Speaker 1: houses in Atlanta and all over the country. But but
- 21:31Speaker 1: really when everything's off and we let our hair down,
- 21:34Speaker 1: he's one of my best friends. So he's the person
- 21:37Speaker 1: that I call if I'm like I can't figure out
- 21:40Speaker 1: this room. I need some input. And and when I'm
- 21:44Speaker 1: I'm doing my my child's room, it's like I'm wanting
- 21:47Speaker 1: I need second eyes. But Mike can't stand it. Whenever
- 21:50Speaker 1: my phone is digging from my bank notifications, Andre has
- 21:55Speaker 1: very high elite taste. You know. I do everything kind
- 21:59Speaker 1: of on the budget on my own, but when he
- 22:00Speaker 1: comes in, the price triples. So Mike, I love you,
- 22:04Speaker 1: but you gotta go bro. But let's let's talk about
- 22:07Speaker 1: the pricing and all that, because you know this is
- 22:09Speaker 1: we're not talking about to see it. But that's that's
- 22:11Speaker 1: that's where the experience comes in. That's when to walk
- 22:14Speaker 1: into a property and give an estimate of what it's
- 22:16Speaker 1: gonna take to get there. And Mike, I'm gonna go
- 22:19Speaker 1: to you as as a builder, as a person who
- 22:22Speaker 1: really is the nuts and boats of renovation. How how
- 22:25Speaker 1: does that process work for you that you trust your
- 22:28Speaker 1: natural instincts or do you have a roller dex? Did
- 22:31Speaker 1: you just you go you you fall back on to
- 22:33Speaker 1: be able to make sure that you hit that number. Yeah, well,
- 22:38Speaker 1: a lot of relationships for one um with subs, with
- 22:42Speaker 1: a lot of big box stores, with a lot of friends,
- 22:45Speaker 1: you know, so those relationships I keep those in mind
- 22:48Speaker 1: as I'm going through properties. But in this day and
- 22:50Speaker 1: age where wood and materials are fluctuating price and sometimes
- 22:55Speaker 1: over priced, I have to get creative, you know, where
- 22:58Speaker 1: we go to refurbished properties or refurbish warehouses and use
- 23:02Speaker 1: materials or I use things that I may have in
- 23:05Speaker 1: my warehouse. You know. Yeah, we actually did that on
- 23:09Speaker 1: so many episodes, where we reuse things and repurpose them
- 23:12Speaker 1: right and make them updated. You know, it's not always
- 23:15Speaker 1: about let's let's demolish this and make a great scene.
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's about let's do those smart decisions that's gonna make
- 23:21Speaker 1: sense so we can hit that target. Yeah, but Rashoon,
- 23:24Speaker 1: sometimes we gotta give the bad news. You know, the
- 23:27Speaker 1: bad news is this is your budget, but we just
- 23:30Speaker 1: can't do it for that budget because the reality is
- 23:33Speaker 1: stuff st out of stock right now, we're still in
- 23:35Speaker 1: the pandemic and materials are sparse, so you know, it
- 23:38Speaker 1: may cost forty percent more than it would have cost
- 23:41Speaker 1: last year or six six months ago. Um, that's when
- 23:44Speaker 1: I let him get the bad news. Materials. And not
- 23:46Speaker 1: only have materials went up, but the price of laborers
- 23:49Speaker 1: went up as well. So people are extremely shocked by pricing.
- 23:53Speaker 1: So some of some of my clients that booked our
- 23:55Speaker 1: company before the pandemic and they wanted to wait, they
- 23:59Speaker 1: are now called and get inside swiped. You know, so
- 24:05Speaker 1: story at this moment, well, I'm talking to Egypt Sharad,
- 24:09Speaker 1: she's the queen, and Mike Jackson he's the king, and
- 24:13Speaker 1: you're married to real estate. It's a it's an exciting
- 24:15Speaker 1: new show. It's a show. A reason I say it's
- 24:16Speaker 1: exciting because they're refreshing, they're entertaining. I want to invite
- 24:22Speaker 1: him into my home. You will invite him into your home.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Discovery Plus, they're streaming right now. You don't know Egypt
- 24:27Speaker 1: shra She has a bootcoo amount of work that's on
- 24:32Speaker 1: Discovered Plus right now. She is the experts, she's the
- 24:35Speaker 1: queen of all respect her. My long this is not
- 24:38Speaker 1: it's not being based on my long time of relationship.
- 24:40Speaker 1: When I mentioned her name and my house, my wife
- 24:43Speaker 1: knew immediately who she was, and that was to be
- 24:46Speaker 1: a testament that my wife respects you and wants to
- 24:50Speaker 1: be excited about this new venture for you guys. More importantly,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I just see a couple of new stars of TV
- 24:56Speaker 1: that's going to like take over the game. And I'm
- 24:59Speaker 1: gonna tell you something. I'm humble when I say that
- 25:01Speaker 1: because I'm blessed it. I can say that I could
- 25:04Speaker 1: have said this five years ago. That's how times have changed.
- 25:07Speaker 1: You guys are landing at the right time on TV.
- 25:10Speaker 1: There's nothing on that show that I was not disappointed in.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I was it was funny, it was organic, it was natural,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and I felt like it was a couple just happens
- 25:19Speaker 1: to have a camera following them around on a on
- 25:23Speaker 1: a rebuild. That's all I saw. That means a lot
- 25:27Speaker 1: coming from We know you know talent, We know that
- 25:30Speaker 1: you you know you helped mold talent as well. Um
- 25:33Speaker 1: and I actually remember a conversation. I don't know if
- 25:36Speaker 1: you remember it, but I'm gonna take you down memory
- 25:38Speaker 1: lane just a little bit before we go. I was
- 25:40Speaker 1: working at WBLS in New York City. I want to
- 25:43Speaker 1: say this was about thirteen years ago. Two or thirteen
- 25:47Speaker 1: years ago. Uh, And I said, for Sean, I gotta
- 25:51Speaker 1: keep this on the down low, but I'm thinking about
- 25:53Speaker 1: making the move to Atlanta, right And I know that
- 25:57Speaker 1: you're in Atlanta. What do you think is that a
- 25:59Speaker 1: good move for me? And you said, come on, come
- 26:01Speaker 1: over here to my office, which by the way, happened
- 26:03Speaker 1: to be like a little production client at that moment
- 26:07Speaker 1: that moment, and you sat me down and you said, this,
- 26:10Speaker 1: this is the deal. Atlanta. It's for big dogs. Everybody's
- 26:14Speaker 1: a star in Atlanta. Everybody's got something going on in Atlanta.
- 26:17Speaker 1: You got some incredible young black entrepreneurs there, and so
- 26:21Speaker 1: if you come in Atlanta, you gotta have your stuff together,
- 26:23Speaker 1: so you get your game plan first and then you
- 26:26Speaker 1: work your plan. I don't know if you if you
- 26:28Speaker 1: remember this conversation, but it sticks out to me because
- 26:31Speaker 1: moving here from New York after cementing myself as a
- 26:35Speaker 1: radio personality there for many years, was a big, bold
- 26:39Speaker 1: move and it was you know, it took a lot
- 26:41Speaker 1: of you know, it took a lot of guns, and
- 26:43Speaker 1: you know, for us to just say we're gonna take
- 26:46Speaker 1: a chance and bet on ourselves and rebuild in an
- 26:49Speaker 1: entirely different city where we didn't know anybody in it
- 26:52Speaker 1: was had several conversations because you know, she followed us
- 26:56Speaker 1: Steve Harvey, now, you know, and so I was always
- 26:59Speaker 1: talking about is always talking about winning, always talking about
- 27:02Speaker 1: But one thing I did like about it she always
- 27:04Speaker 1: had multiple strings of income. Ye see right there. She
- 27:09Speaker 1: was my friend because that's important in today's society to
- 27:13Speaker 1: be able to wake up and realize you have options.
- 27:15Speaker 1: And when I sat down I remember that conversation because
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's funny Egypt. I get that a lot from people
- 27:20Speaker 1: to say, which you remember when you told me this,
- 27:22Speaker 1: And I have an honest side of me that I'm
- 27:24Speaker 1: gonna tell you, Look, you need to stay up here.
- 27:27Speaker 1: This hit. But I knew that she had a sense
- 27:31Speaker 1: of the gift to be able to do more. But
- 27:33Speaker 1: if you go down there, know what you're walking into
- 27:37Speaker 1: because it's going to happen. And guess what, everything's time
- 27:40Speaker 1: that right, it is the new Hollywood. You know the pricings. Right,
- 27:45Speaker 1: y'all have a great show. I'm comfortable now. I just
- 27:48Speaker 1: gotta get y'all come by my house and remodel my
- 27:50Speaker 1: back and there we don't talk about that. I'm just
- 27:57Speaker 1: making you do. Zoe, you know, you know, you know
- 27:59Speaker 1: you're in these calls and then you go bye bye.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I said, oh, they said't gonna give me his novel?
- 28:07Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, No, no, no, no, but again,

- 31:20Speaker 1: actress singer. Her resume includes the Fresh Prince of Berlair,
- 31:23Speaker 1: Loved That Girl, the CBS soap Proper Young In the Wrestlers,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and many many more. And but on this show today,
- 31:29Speaker 1: she's going to talk about a new Lifetime original movie,
- 31:32Speaker 1: Vanished Searching for My Sister, which premieres Saturday, January twenty
- 31:37Speaker 1: second on Lifetime a PM seven Central. Here's the great
- 31:42Speaker 1: thing to bouy. It's gonna see Tatiana like you've never
- 31:44Speaker 1: seen it before. She plays the role of twins Jada
- 31:48Speaker 1: and Kayla, who could not be more opposite. I've seen
- 31:51Speaker 1: the movie. As they say, if you have four starts,
- 31:53Speaker 1: I'm giving it all four plus a little pinky for
- 31:55Speaker 1: a plus. It's really that good. So please work with
- 31:58Speaker 1: money making conversation as we are explore her life and
- 32:01Speaker 1: talk to my friends oft the HPC. You talk to
- 32:03Speaker 1: my friends across the country as well as about black excellence,
- 32:07Speaker 1: and she does exemplify that. The movie vanished searching for
- 32:10Speaker 1: my sister to star. Tatiana Ali, welcome to the show.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having me. There's always a
- 32:18Speaker 1: journey in uh your career, especially you're starting at such
- 32:21Speaker 1: a young age, and that's one of the one reasons
- 32:23Speaker 1: I wanted to bring you on this show, because you know,
- 32:25Speaker 1: we've seen so many tragic stories of young people not
- 32:28Speaker 1: being able to get over the hulp. I've been fortunate.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I've written sitcoms Robert Townsend, Sister Sister, Jamie Foxes, and
- 32:37Speaker 1: The Parkers, so I've I've worked with young talent, and
- 32:39Speaker 1: you're a young talent. You're still finding yourself in this business.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Talk about starting in this business and being able to
- 32:45Speaker 1: survive in this business, Tatiana. Um, I think for for
- 32:51Speaker 1: young people especially, UM, it's hard to you know, have
- 32:56Speaker 1: a career and just go through the natural challenges of
- 33:00Speaker 1: growing up. And young performers need all of the support
- 33:06Speaker 1: that you know every other child needs. And sometimes you
- 33:10Speaker 1: know we we we tend to be precocious, right, UM,
- 33:16Speaker 1: usually intelligent, artistic, and are able to take on a
- 33:22Speaker 1: lot of responsibility. And I think you know, even people
- 33:26Speaker 1: that I've known in my life, um, growing up who
- 33:29Speaker 1: were also actors, um, who necessarily didn't do so well
- 33:33Speaker 1: in life afterwards. UM, you need that support system, and
- 33:38Speaker 1: you need somebody to sometimes treat you like a child
- 33:41Speaker 1: and tell you know, guide you rear you. UM. I
- 33:46Speaker 1: think all that responsibility that we kind of exude fools
- 33:51Speaker 1: people into thinking that we're okay when we're not okay,
- 33:54Speaker 1: or that we need less than we actually need. And
- 33:58Speaker 1: I'm lucky if if you know, if I have been
- 34:02Speaker 1: successful in life, which I feel, I feel happy with
- 34:05Speaker 1: my life. UM, that's all because of my family. You know,
- 34:09Speaker 1: my parents they could care less about entertainment or fame. UM.
- 34:16Speaker 1: They really raised me too. Hopefully be courageous enough to
- 34:21Speaker 1: just do what I love, whatever that is. And so
- 34:25Speaker 1: my pride and my understanding of self is not really
- 34:30Speaker 1: wrapped up in what I do. I exist outside of it.
- 34:36Speaker 1: You know, acting, performing, that's just what I do. It's
- 34:40Speaker 1: not it doesn't make up all of me. And I
- 34:42Speaker 1: think that's allowed me to, you know, for the with
- 34:49Speaker 1: the highs and the lows of my career. You know,
- 34:52Speaker 1: it's always interesting when when you get in entertainment because
- 34:55Speaker 1: people are kind of short trained because used the word
- 34:57Speaker 1: intelligence is smarts, because some people tend to think that
- 35:01Speaker 1: there's a limit to the abilities. And that's why I
- 35:03Speaker 1: made sure I put Harvard Grad. If you had to
- 35:06Speaker 1: put Harvard Grad actress, singer, which one of those three
- 35:11Speaker 1: would you be most proud and be willing to brag
- 35:13Speaker 1: about the most? Oh that's a good question. You know.
- 35:21Speaker 1: I was talking to my husband about this because you know,
- 35:24Speaker 1: Lonnie Guinier just passed. She's a Harvard law professor. I
- 35:29Speaker 1: knew about her growing up. You know, she worked in
- 35:31Speaker 1: UH I think it was Bill Clinton's administration. And I
- 35:34Speaker 1: remember my first week at Harvard and she had just
- 35:37Speaker 1: started her professorship there and I saw her walk across
- 35:42Speaker 1: campus and like, I've never I've been rich. I've been
- 35:47Speaker 1: kind of like star struck twice in my life and
- 35:51Speaker 1: they weren't entertainers. One was Macy Jamison. I met her
- 35:56Speaker 1: in an CP function. I was like eleven, and I
- 35:59Speaker 1: really wanted to go to Space Camp when I was
- 36:01Speaker 1: a kid. That was like she was everything, Like I
- 36:03Speaker 1: had her poster on my well. And then the second
- 36:05Speaker 1: time was when I saw Lottie Gumer on campus, and
- 36:09Speaker 1: I don't know what it is. I think I think
- 36:16Speaker 1: there's something about those women, you know, exceeding the expectations
- 36:26Speaker 1: of their society, kind of like just going after their
- 36:32Speaker 1: dreams and then also giving so much to others in
- 36:38Speaker 1: their work that that is what impressed me as a
- 36:43Speaker 1: as a as a young woman, and so so in
- 36:48Speaker 1: that thinking about that, maybe maybe going to school is
- 36:52Speaker 1: the thing that I'm like, hey, I'll do that, because
- 36:55Speaker 1: it was the thing that I really had to I
- 37:00Speaker 1: was very deep in my music and in touring at
- 37:04Speaker 1: the time that I got accepted, and I remember very
- 37:08Speaker 1: distinctly having a meeting, you know, a seventeen year old
- 37:11Speaker 1: girl in a meeting with all these executives saying, guess
- 37:14Speaker 1: what I just got accepted to these different places, and
- 37:18Speaker 1: I want to go, and then going, what do you
- 37:20Speaker 1: mean you want to go? Why do you need that?
- 37:23Speaker 1: If you do that, then you can't do this, which
- 37:27Speaker 1: I'm so happy to see that. Now that's just kind
- 37:30Speaker 1: of an unacceptable thing to say to a young person.
- 37:32Speaker 1: But I think, you know, back then it really was
- 37:36Speaker 1: people really thought like, oh, school was something to fall
- 37:39Speaker 1: back on. And I always had this very deep, just
- 37:43Speaker 1: like an intuitive understanding that why wouldn't you want me
- 37:45Speaker 1: to go to school? Why would you why why would
- 37:48Speaker 1: an artist not need to be educated? Why would you
- 37:52Speaker 1: not need to know what you're saying, what you're contributing? How?
- 37:58Speaker 1: And so, yeah, the beauty of it is like my
- 38:04Speaker 1: degree is in mathematics, you know, my minors and sociology
- 38:07Speaker 1: and uh. And so when I was whenever I tell people,
- 38:10Speaker 1: despite all the success I have, you know, whether it's
- 38:12Speaker 1: managing and Steve Harvey or Stephen Nay Smith for doing movies, uh, sitcoms,
- 38:17Speaker 1: when I tell people I have a math degree, it
- 38:19Speaker 1: almost shuts the room down a little bit. Humh. And so,
- 38:23Speaker 1: so because people don't expect that, they expect what they
- 38:26Speaker 1: expect when you say if you're an athlete. You know,
- 38:28Speaker 1: that's why applaud Lebron James so much. I applaud you
- 38:32Speaker 1: because one can stand that lane, because sometimes that lane
- 38:36Speaker 1: can box you in, because people can throw fear at you.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Said no, no, no no, if you go do this,
- 38:40Speaker 1: you can't do this. And guess what. You went there,
- 38:44Speaker 1: did that and guess what I'm interviewing about a very
- 38:47Speaker 1: great movie on Lifetime original called Vans Searching for My Sister.
- 38:51Speaker 1: So it didn't stop you from achieving a continued level
- 38:54Speaker 1: of success in the entertainment the world. That's why I
- 38:57Speaker 1: really feel is a blessing. And you know my question
- 38:59Speaker 1: is just to ask and just to get you to
- 39:01Speaker 1: think about it because I commend you. I applaud you
- 39:05Speaker 1: because that's a decision you had to make. You had
- 39:07Speaker 1: to get up, you had to open up that book.
- 39:09Speaker 1: You had to stay committed, and you could have turned
- 39:11Speaker 1: and ran off. And so I don't want to do this.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Just look, find me a stage, find me a script,
- 39:15Speaker 1: so I can go on in a short term success.
- 39:18Speaker 1: You know, you can get any whoa I'm a star game.
- 39:21Speaker 1: But you walked on that campus and basically became a
- 39:24Speaker 1: student and that's a blessing. Yeah, it was, and it
- 39:29Speaker 1: was a It was a culture shot because all of
- 39:31Speaker 1: a sudden, you know, well I had been working for
- 39:35Speaker 1: so long and and going to school at the same time.
- 39:38Speaker 1: But I had tutors, I had you know, I was
- 39:41Speaker 1: in studio school, so all of a sudden, to be
- 39:43Speaker 1: given a syllabus, I was like, what I remember? I
- 39:47Speaker 1: remember even what I wore, Like, I had two types
- 39:51Speaker 1: of clothes in my wardrobe. I had rehearsal clothes and
- 39:55Speaker 1: a athleisure wasn't a thing that you know, rehearsal clothes,
- 39:59Speaker 1: and then I had like super fancy like out there.
- 40:03Speaker 1: So I even had to go and like go to
- 40:05Speaker 1: the store with my mom when we first got you know,
- 40:08Speaker 1: into Cambridge, and like just buy some jeans, right right right,
- 40:11Speaker 1: just be normal, just have the style. I really I
- 40:15Speaker 1: love the fact you said you had two outfits because basically,
- 40:19Speaker 1: in the movie Vanished, you're playing two roles, and basically
- 40:23Speaker 1: it's two outfits. There is one of this humble, you know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: studious type person. That's why I love this thing because
- 40:30Speaker 1: it kind of blends your life, you know, because you
- 40:32Speaker 1: were just this this this outrageous not since the outrage it.
- 40:36Speaker 1: But you was this actor, this entertainer that was kind
- 40:38Speaker 1: of like one twin sister. And then this this, this,
- 40:41Speaker 1: this Harvard student was the other sister. So basically, I'm
- 40:46Speaker 1: not saying, basically, you live this life, but now you're
- 40:50Speaker 1: living in to the extremes in a movie. What what
- 40:52Speaker 1: attracted you to this project? I love the idea of well,
- 40:59Speaker 1: it's it's actually based on a true story. So, UM,
- 41:02Speaker 1: a woman actually did do this. Her twin sister had disappeared. Her.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Her twin was an ex addict, She had a had
- 41:11Speaker 1: a harder life than than UM than her sister and UM,
- 41:15Speaker 1: but they were very very close, and her sister went
- 41:18Speaker 1: missing and her her twin, the twin that remained. UM
- 41:23Speaker 1: just would not allow her sister to not have justice
- 41:29Speaker 1: or to not be found. And I loved that part
- 41:33Speaker 1: of the story especially you know, UM, black women disappear
- 41:39Speaker 1: a lot. A lot of people have been talking about that,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and you know, the efforts that are made to find
- 41:46Speaker 1: them or to find out what happened to him sometimes
- 41:49Speaker 1: just aren't there. And I think that was the case
- 41:51Speaker 1: with this woman, and she just wouldn't stand for that.
- 41:53Speaker 1: She made sure that her sister's life mattered, and I
- 41:56Speaker 1: was really attracted to that. Also was really attracted to
- 41:59Speaker 1: just the chow on to playing these two totally different
- 42:03Speaker 1: women who grew up in the same home but took
- 42:06Speaker 1: completely different paths in life. Um. That was really exciting
- 42:12Speaker 1: and also kind of scary because I've never I've never
- 42:14Speaker 1: done anything like that before. And the sister who's an
- 42:17Speaker 1: ex addict, Kayla m I very rarely get the opportunity
- 42:22Speaker 1: to play um women like that, and I really I
- 42:27Speaker 1: loved her. I wish I could have played her more
- 42:28Speaker 1: in the in the movie. Actually, well, you know, I
- 42:31Speaker 1: thought you kind of playing you did a great job
- 42:34Speaker 1: because you got to play both sides of it. And
- 42:37Speaker 1: the thing about it that I enjoyed because I've been
- 42:39Speaker 1: fortunate to, you know, do that twin role production wise,
- 42:43Speaker 1: and I know, and you have to you have to
- 42:45Speaker 1: do the lines and you have to do the other lines.
- 42:47Speaker 1: You it's really it looks like it's easy, but it's
- 42:50Speaker 1: really difficult. At what time did you you know, when
- 42:53Speaker 1: you're dealing with that split personality and and and and
- 42:56Speaker 1: laying it out, what challenges did you face and play
- 43:00Speaker 1: and both roles, especially when you were the characters were
- 43:02Speaker 1: talking to each other. Yeah, there's um, it's you know,
- 43:09Speaker 1: a million challenges differentiating to you know, the work that
- 43:13Speaker 1: I would usually do going into a film, the character
- 43:16Speaker 1: development that's all of that is times two and then
- 43:19Speaker 1: times three because I then am alone working on the
- 43:25Speaker 1: relationship between the two sisters. Usually, you know, I might
- 43:28Speaker 1: have my guesses or my instincts of what a relationship
- 43:31Speaker 1: is in a story, but I have another actor that
- 43:34Speaker 1: I can uh, you know, consult with and vibe off
- 43:38Speaker 1: up and figure it out with. But with them, you know,
- 43:41Speaker 1: it's just me creating this relationship. I worked with really
- 43:45Speaker 1: great stand ins who, um, they were just excellent and
- 43:49Speaker 1: just like with their with me on that um. But yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 1: the split screen work was that was a beast. And
- 43:57Speaker 1: you know, we made this movie in three weeks, which
- 44:00Speaker 1: is it's a truncated schedule to be claiming to characters,
- 44:03Speaker 1: and so there were many days where I was, um,
- 44:07Speaker 1: both Kayla and Jada on the same day, and I
- 44:10Speaker 1: really relied on makeup and hair and and the costumers
- 44:14Speaker 1: who are incredible to just I love the makeup and
- 44:18Speaker 1: hair room. That's like my safe space when I would
- 44:23Speaker 1: switch from one to the other. They were just they
- 44:26Speaker 1: were I had the most beautiful souls to work with
- 44:29Speaker 1: and helped me through them. If anybody is ever questioning
- 44:33Speaker 1: the athleticism of Ali not in this. Once you watch
- 44:39Speaker 1: this particular movie, this young lady jumps over a head.
- 44:46Speaker 1: I mean I fell out. You know, I played it back.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I played the back. I laughed, So I said, well,
- 44:53Speaker 1: this is this is awesome. You jumped over that book.
- 44:55Speaker 1: You know. The thing about it is I loved it
- 44:58Speaker 1: because that's how as you you say, a black woman
- 45:01Speaker 1: acts when they see their babies in danger. You reacted
- 45:06Speaker 1: like a black woman, like my momble, like my son,
- 45:09Speaker 1: see somebody out there messing with their kids. Jim, you
- 45:13Speaker 1: got out there. Now, let's talk about was that? Was
- 45:17Speaker 1: that just? Uh? Because it was it in the way
- 45:19Speaker 1: could you have went around that scene? It was amazing,
- 45:22Speaker 1: It was It was great, Diana. I'm not even telling
- 45:26Speaker 1: it was amazing that you did it. It felt so real,
- 45:28Speaker 1: It felt like you were in the moment and its
- 45:31Speaker 1: soul that scene. It's funny that you bring that up,
- 45:35Speaker 1: because when we were shooting it, I remember the director going,
- 45:39Speaker 1: you know, he was, he was like, we got this.
- 45:42Speaker 1: He's like, I want you to come out the door,
- 45:43Speaker 1: and I just want you to make a beeline. I
- 45:45Speaker 1: don't want you to go to the sidewalks. It seems
- 45:47Speaker 1: too far. What do you think? But this hedge is
- 45:49Speaker 1: in the way, and maybe we could just have them
- 45:51Speaker 1: cut it down or something so you could run through it.
- 45:54Speaker 1: I was like, do you know what I would do?
- 46:00Speaker 1: Because you know, I'm a mom, and uh, even before
- 46:08Speaker 1: I was a mom, I had a puppy who ended
- 46:10Speaker 1: up on the outside of offense. Luckily, my children have
- 46:14Speaker 1: never been in this kind of dangerous situation, so I
- 46:15Speaker 1: haven't had that experience yet, or you know, hopefully I
- 46:20Speaker 1: prayed that I won't. But I had a puppy who
- 46:24Speaker 1: was outside a much taller offense and the traffic was
- 46:28Speaker 1: rushing back and forth, and I jumped over that, I
- 46:31Speaker 1: mean sense it was about four ft tall, and got
- 46:35Speaker 1: my puppy and then was locked out of my house, Like,
- 46:38Speaker 1: how did I do back? I can't get back in.
- 46:42Speaker 1: We will be right back with more money making conversation
- 46:45Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Before there was the podcast, there was radio,
- 46:50Speaker 1: before that, the stage and before that, well you get
- 46:53Speaker 1: the idea. Things evolve, Technology changes and we do too,
- 46:58Speaker 1: So now we can listen to a show wherever, whenever. However,
- 47:02Speaker 1: why should our work be any different? Why can't we
- 47:05Speaker 1: work with more freedom, more flexibility, more choices. That's how
- 47:09Speaker 1: Slack works. It's a digital headquarters that works how you work,
- 47:13Speaker 1: and Slack is where the future works. Now let's return
- 47:18Speaker 1: to money making conversation with Rashan McDonald. I'm telling you something.
- 47:21Speaker 1: I'm talking to town Alid the athletic, the Olympic, you know,
- 47:25Speaker 1: the hurdler, the hurdler, the hurdler, you know, talking about
- 47:29Speaker 1: her new movie Lifetime, which premier is Saturday, January twenty second,
- 47:33Speaker 1: vanished searching for my sister. I let me tell you something.
- 47:36Speaker 1: What I watched a lot of movie, read a lot
- 47:38Speaker 1: of books. I I always get a kick out of
- 47:41Speaker 1: moments like this where they're seeing you know. All I'm
- 47:45Speaker 1: just saying is this. You were so natural when you
- 47:47Speaker 1: did that moment. It sold me. Not only I was
- 47:51Speaker 1: bought in. I bought into the movie, but that moment
- 47:55Speaker 1: showed me a level of commitment because you know, you
- 47:58Speaker 1: could just see some people when they try to do
- 48:00Speaker 1: something they're not used to doing. When you did that,
- 48:02Speaker 1: I went wow. I didn't expect that, But guess what
- 48:06Speaker 1: her children were in danger? And then you had some great, great,
- 48:10Speaker 1: great other people starring is but Girl, Jas, Mcguy and
- 48:15Speaker 1: Tretch and all everybody nature frame that right there. Boy.
- 48:18Speaker 1: You know, like I said, let's let's talk about acting
- 48:21Speaker 1: with them. I know you have a history with them.
- 48:23Speaker 1: You we've seen them all on TV and movies over
- 48:25Speaker 1: the years and watching performing on stage. In the case
- 48:28Speaker 1: of Tretch, talk about bringing that all together, because it
- 48:31Speaker 1: really did sell a CD community versus the world that
- 48:35Speaker 1: you lived in and allowed you to understand. And also
- 48:38Speaker 1: I felt danger for you. I felt that you you
- 48:42Speaker 1: were stepping too far out. Young ladies. You need to
- 48:45Speaker 1: shut it down. You need to shut it down. Do
- 48:47Speaker 1: you know where you're at? So talk about that those
- 48:50Speaker 1: experiences allowing them to build that real culture of credibility
- 48:54Speaker 1: to you walk in both worlds. I I just absolutely
- 48:58Speaker 1: loved this cast, every every single body, I mean every
- 49:01Speaker 1: single person. Um. Tretch, who is you know? I think
- 49:06Speaker 1: the first time I met him, I was like fifteen
- 49:08Speaker 1: or sixteen, Um, and he is just the kindest. He's
- 49:15Speaker 1: so lovely and he there's actually a scene in the
- 49:19Speaker 1: club where he sort of, you know, grips up my
- 49:23Speaker 1: character against the wall, and he's such a good actor.
- 49:27Speaker 1: I you know, after they yelled cut, I had to
- 49:32Speaker 1: take some time because he really scared me. Um, he
- 49:40Speaker 1: really did. He was just he was so so incredible,
- 49:43Speaker 1: and not just on set, but the way it reads
- 49:46Speaker 1: on camera. Um Um, even when you watch it, he's
- 49:50Speaker 1: he can be terrifying. He's a very good actor and
- 49:53Speaker 1: he's not like that all in real life. Jasmine, this
- 49:56Speaker 1: was my This is the third time I've got a
- 49:58Speaker 1: chance to work with her, but the most intimately that
- 50:02Speaker 1: I've worked with her before. And it's hard sometimes to
- 50:06Speaker 1: not like fan fan out on somebody before. But you know,
- 50:11Speaker 1: I'm in these intense scenes with her and I'm thinking about, like, um,
- 50:16Speaker 1: Harlem Knights. She's this this phenomenal like powerhouse actor and
- 50:23Speaker 1: actually that role was meant for a man initially, That's
- 50:27Speaker 1: how it was written. Um. And they didn't change anything.
- 50:30Speaker 1: They just brought her into it and she she kills it.
- 50:34Speaker 1: She killed it. I loved I loved working with her
- 50:37Speaker 1: so any That's the thing is like any kind of
- 50:39Speaker 1: difficulty or whatever that I was having, um or or
- 50:42Speaker 1: the challenge that I was having playing the two characters,
- 50:46Speaker 1: once I got to set and I just worked with
- 50:49Speaker 1: all of these incredible actors that are in it. Um,
- 50:54Speaker 1: yeah you could, I could just play. We know. The
- 50:56Speaker 1: interesting thing about the whole reason I bring up there,
- 51:00Speaker 1: whether it's treach and other people were performing in this
- 51:03Speaker 1: particularly this wonderful movie, is that I felt your frustration. Okay,
- 51:07Speaker 1: it had credibility. I felt that when you felt they
- 51:10Speaker 1: weren't doing enough, I felt you had crossed the line
- 51:14Speaker 1: many times. But if you crossed the line many times,
- 51:17Speaker 1: and so that that that tells me good acting, good directing,
- 51:21Speaker 1: good good character development and overall the projects sold me
- 51:26Speaker 1: on the fact that you just wanted justice for your
- 51:29Speaker 1: sister and and also for her daughter, also for your daughter.
- 51:35Speaker 1: And it was a love story. I felt it was
- 51:37Speaker 1: a love story wrapped into this in a sea line,
- 51:41Speaker 1: a sea level storyline that I that in the end
- 51:44Speaker 1: it placed itself out and uh talk about that because
- 51:47Speaker 1: I felt that, you know, we kind of missed when
- 51:50Speaker 1: you get into these stories and a tipe of violence,
- 51:52Speaker 1: but it was a love story to me. In your
- 51:54Speaker 1: relationship with your ex, yeah, that was an interesting UM
- 52:00Speaker 1: part of this. My the main character, Jada, her ex husband.
- 52:06Speaker 1: You know, they have a very strange relationship. They they
- 52:09Speaker 1: certain they have a they still have a love for
- 52:11Speaker 1: each other, but their relationship didn't work out. And um,
- 52:16Speaker 1: over over the course of the story. You know, at first,
- 52:21Speaker 1: he's an antagonist to what she's trying to do. He's like,
- 52:24Speaker 1: you are not being a mother right now, and you're spiraling.
- 52:30Speaker 1: And I think at onet, well, I won't tell that part,
- 52:33Speaker 1: but um, they end up, you know, he ends up
- 52:37Speaker 1: really coming through. I think in a way that that
- 52:41Speaker 1: was probably missing in their relationship before. And I I
- 52:45Speaker 1: just I like that part of the story, that sort
- 52:49Speaker 1: of family part of the story, not with her husband,
- 52:54Speaker 1: with her daughter, with her niece Justice. You know, I
- 53:01Speaker 1: don't know, like the way we love. I like seeing
- 53:03Speaker 1: that black love black. I en George, seeing that I
- 53:07Speaker 1: enjoy He's a handsome guy, You're a very beautiful young
- 53:09Speaker 1: lady playing a role that the child who plays your
- 53:13Speaker 1: daughter is incredibly beautiful. It was just really that's what
- 53:17Speaker 1: I love about what I enjoyed seeing television nowadays. You know,
- 53:21Speaker 1: there's the diversity and the commercials and they acting and
- 53:25Speaker 1: their roles that I knew black people wouldn't be having
- 53:28Speaker 1: five years ago, and now being cast in and I
- 53:30Speaker 1: can enjoy myself watching these love stories. They're not They're
